CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Conservatives want to reverse abortion law Rauner signed – Monique Garcia
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-bruce-rauner-illinois-abortion-20171012-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservative lawmakers have filed legislation to ban tax money from being used to pay for abortions amid continued fallout between Gov. Bruce Rauner and Republicans angry at his decision to expand abortion access for women covered by Medicaid and state employee insurance. The proposal is unlikely to gain momentum given Democratic majorities in the legislature and Rauner’s signature this month on the abortion law. But effort to reverse it highlights the deep divide in the Republican Party, which has relied on the governor’s personal wealth to help revitalize their ranks. Under the bill, no taxpayer funds could be used to provide elective abortions. That would amount to a reversal of a key provision in the measure Rauner signed, which allows for taxpayer subsidized abortions for state employees and low-income women. Illinois already covered abortions in cases of rape, incest and when there is a threat to the health and life of the mother. “This controversial and culturally divisive act should not be one that taxpayers should be forced to fund,” said Republican state Sen. Dan McConchie of Hawthorn Woods. “Likewise, there is no good reason for taxpayers to be on the hook for someone else’s personal decision.” The measure would not impact the portion of the law signed by Rauner that would prevent a trigger making abortion illegal in Illinois should the U.S. Supreme Court overturn its landmark Roe v. Wade ruling. Meanwhile, conservatives say they are also considering a legal challenge to delay implementation of the abortion bill signed by Rauner. The governor has called on those upset by his decision to focus on uniting behind issues they can all support, such as his stalled efforts to put in place term limits and win regulatory changes he contends will spur business growth. “Reasonable people can reasonably disagree,” Rauner said last week when asked about the split in the Republican Party over abortion. “No group is defined by any one issue.”)

— Pro-Life/ Pro-Family Forces Meet … Will Oppose Rauner in Primary and General Election
http://mailchi.mp/7450211a2a56/pro-family-pro-life-meeting-oppose-rauner
(FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT: The following Bill of Particulars was unanimously endorsed today by representatives of 20 statewide pro-life and pro-family organizations at a meeting in Chicago. Bill of Particulars  Whereas the 2016 platforms of both the national and Illinois Republican parties clearly state their opposition to taxpayer-funded abortion. Whereas the Republican members of the Illinois House and Senate have expressed their united opposition to taxpayer-funded abortion as expressed in House Bill 40. Whereas the duly-elected Governor of Illinois, Bruce Rauner, after making several public promises to veto House Bill 40, shockingly, caved to pressure from radical abortion extremists and signed this dastardly legislation into law on September 27, 2017. Whereas every Republican member of the Illinois Congressional Delegate called upon Rauner to veto HB 40 Therefore, we the assembled leaders of 20 pro-life, pro-family statewide organizations in Illinois state the following: We hereby express a vote of “no confidence” in Governor Bruce Rauner. We hereby state that Governor Bruce Rauner, were he to seek re-election for the office of Governor, will not have our support in either a Republican primary or in the General Election of 2018. We state that we will support a candidate or candidates for governor who are  publicly committed to the repeal of House Bill 40 in 2018 Republican primary and, if required, in the 2018 general election. We further state that we will support only candidates for public office who are publicly committed to the repeal of House Bill 40. We encourage the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church, other Christian churches, Jewish people, and other people of Faith throughout Illinois to demand of their local public officials a public commitment to support the repeal of House Bill 40. We ask people of Faith throughout Illinois to join us in prayer for the souls of the many innocent victims of abortion including the unborn, the women victimized, and their families who will suffer as a result of the pen of Governor Bruce Rauner.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Anti-abortion groups dump Rauner for 2018 – GREG HINZ
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20171009/BLOGS02/171009885/pro-life-groups-dump-rauner-for-2018
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner’s problems with the political right widened and deepened late today as 21 anti-abortion groups declared the GOP incumbent “will not have our support” in next year’s elections, and a conservative lawmaker said she’s getting closer on a decision on whether to oppose him in next year’s Republican primary. In the first action, 21 anti-abortion groups headed by Family-PAC and Illinois Family Action issued a “bill of particulars” aimed at Rauner and his decision to sign a bill extending Medicaid coverage to abortion despite prior promises to veto it. Rauner “caved to pressure from radical abortion extremists and signed this dastardly legislation into law,” the statement said. “We hereby express a vote of ‘no confidence’ in Gov. Bruce Rauner. We hereby state that Gov. Bruce Rauner, were he to seek re-election for the office of governor, will not have our support in either a Republican primary or in the general election of 2018.” It concluded, “We ask people of faith throughout Illinois to join us in prayer for the souls of the many innocent victims of abortion including the unborn, the women victimized, and their families who will suffer as a result of the pen of Gov. Bruce Rauner.” Some of the 21 groups do not want their names made public but among others who signed are Illinois Right to Life and Catholic Citizens of Illinois. The governor’s campaign spokeswoman had no immediate response. Meanwhile, Rep. Jeanne Ives, a DuPage County Republican, told me in a phone interview that she’s “much closer” to deciding whether to run after getting expressions of support from “all over the state.” Ives said she wasn’t surprised at the statement from the anti-abortion groups. “They’re very disappointed that the governor ‘with no social agenda’ betrayed them.” When he campaigned for office four years ago, Rauner indeed said he had “no social agenda” but also indicated on a questionnaire that he would approve legislation authorizing Medicaid abortions. Springfield Democrats forced his hand this spring by sending in such a bill and, after weeks of what he said were efforts to find a compromise, Rauner ended up enacting it.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Luring foreign students to U.S. business schools has become tougher in the anti-immigrant climate spurred by President Donald Trump’s rhetoric and policies, but his rants about Chicago’s crime have made it doubly difficult for local institutions. Foreign students, already facing tighter visa quotas and dimmer prospects for U.S. jobs, have been unnerved by web headlines like Trump’s threat to “send in the feds” to fight crime in Chicago. Quinlan School of Business Dean Kevin Stevens at Loyola University Chicago laments an MBA market that has been soft for years, even without recent pressures from the White House, and says the focus on Chicago crime has taken it to another level. He recently Skyped with one Indian student prospect and her parents to reassure them she would be safe and welcome at the downtown school, where students take classes at night.)

WILLIAM J KELLY

(FROM THE ARTICLE: I went to the Columbus Day Parade today not only as a Republican candidate for Governor but as a supporter of the Italian-American community and a 4th degree member of the Knight of Columbus. While doing an interview with reporter Mike Flannery of WFLD-TV, the local FOX affiliate, I was attacked on-camera by a supporter of Bruce Rauner. It is unacceptable for any candidate for public office to be attacked. Consequently, I have filed a police report against my attacker to send a clear message that I will not be intimidated by any political thugs of Governor Rauner. Chicago is known nationwide and worldwide for its violent crime and political corruption. When I win the Republican primary against Bruce Rauner, the man who betrayed voters by making Illinois a sanctuary state, forced taxpayers to fund abortion, and who opposes President Trump, I will restore pride and honor to Chicago and the State of Illinois.)

DAILY CALLER
— Fake Outrage From GOP Leaders Over Rauner, Abortion In Illinois – William J. Kelly  (DIERSEN: In 2014, how many anti-Republicans voted for Rauner/Sanguinetti in your precinct, in your township/ward, in your county, and in Illinois?)
http://dailycaller.com/2017/10/09/fake-outrage-from-gop-leaders-over-rauner-abortion-in-illinois/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Back in 2012, before he was Governor, before he made Illinois a sanctuary state and legalized taxpayer-funded abortions, millionaire Bruce Rauner was buying up the Illinois GOP like it was a depressed financial asset. Rauner had spent his professional life as a vulture capitalist and he knew the Illinois Republican party could be bought at bargain basement prices. He was openly pro-abortion, pro-amnesty, and had padded the coffers of everyone from Planned Parenthood and the ACLU to the Democrat National Committee. He was besties with Rahm Emanuel and made him a millionaire. Rauner’s ugly history was out in the open like laundry on a clothing line. Some Republicans would have you believe it was a secret. It was not. I believed then – and still do now – that Rauner was a clear and present danger to the Republican Party and sounded the warning bells.  Unfortunately, my criticism was met with derision…and threats from the GOP establishment. Didn’t I know Rauner was paying top dollar for Republican loyalty – not just hundreds of thousands of dollars – but millions? I was spoiling their Grand Ole’ Party. Even Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass, who made his name railing against the Combine, was riding the Rauner train.  In July 2013, he wrote this gushing column, “Illinois Republicans: Get ready for Bruce Rauner, multimillionaire businessman and possible candidate for governor could be just the ticket to take on the status quo, fix broken state.” I’m not kidding. That’s the title of Kass’ column. The equivalent of a sloppy wet journalistic kiss. You can’t pay for that kind of media…or can you? It was official: Bruce Rauner, the Combine millionaire was now Illinois’ newest savior. Today is a different story. In the wake of the political bloodbath of HB40, Rauner’s once merry band of conservative enablers are desperate to rewrite history. All of a sudden, they are pointing the finger at Rauner, calling him a liar, crying that they were “deceived.” This outrage is fake. Republicans who took millions of dollars from Rauner are the ones shrieking the loudest.  In the National Review, political operative Dan Proft lashes out at Rauner’s “radical-left social agenda.” Does that mean Dan will be giving Rauner his $5 million back? By claiming Rauner deceived them on abortion and illegal immigration, Rauner’s shills are lying to voters again. Shamelessly, they are also demanding voters support their hand-picked candidate against Rauner in the GOP primary. Why should anyone believe them after the destruction Rauner has wrought? Or is a ruse designed to help Rauner in this desperate but deep blue state? Suddenly even John Kass is anti-Rauner and he’s pushing his own candidate too. Rauner donated $510,000 to the ACLU in 2012, specifically to fund pro-abortion-related litigation. He named Obama’s former Chief of Staff Bill Daley to his transition team. Since elected, he has continued to fund Planned Parenthood with taxpayer-funded grants.  In 2016, Rauner also signed a bill forcing pro-life doctors and crisis pregnancy groups to promote abortion. He made Illinois a sanctuary state and the day after the bill passed the legislature, Republicans said nothing. Where was the outrage of my fellow conservatives then? Rauner isn’t the liar here. The hacks took his money are. They duped local GOP officials statewide and they duped the voters into supporting Rauner. We need to hold them accountable. I’m relieved local Republican leaders and voters finally know the sad truth about Bruce Rauner. Because Illinois cannot afford for history to repeat itself in 2018 and we cannot afford another Bruce Rauner. We really can’t.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Rep. Jeanne Ives attacks Rauner’s weak right flank – John Kass
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/kass/ct-met-illinois-governor-kass-1008-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton, a conservative and a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, may soon challenge a weakened Gov. Bruce Rauner in the Republican primary. “I’m seriously considering the option, with a serious game plan, we’re meeting with people and we’ll make a decision one way or another soon, and I mean very soon,” Ives told me Friday. She’s considering it because Rauner has lost his base. And what happens when an incumbent loses his or her base? You can smell the toast a’burnin’. “Voters don’t know what Rauner’s core principles are because he doesn’t have any. So we can’t very well give him a pass,” said Ives, a staunch social and fiscal conservative. “I’m not connected to the big money men who run the big races, but whoever would take Rauner on, it would cost less to defeat him than it would for him to redeem his reputation.” Rauner lost the conservative Republican base in Illinois by moving hard to the left, first by signing “sanctuary state” legislation and then by putting taxpayers on the hook to pay for abortion on demand. On Friday, he axed one of his few remaining conservative aides, chief of staff Kristina Rasmussen. Rauner supporters think his moves help him in Cook County, particularly with pro-abortion-rights suburban women. But will Rauner’s support of “sanctuary state” legislation win him Latino support in a general election? Will his decision to risk his career by supporting taxpayer-funded abortion win him love from Democrats? I don’t think so. Yet such moves do satisfy the media, that which will sing his praises and call him courageous and so on, and vilify or at least marginalize any conservative challenger, whether that is Ives or someone else. That’s how things are wired in Illinois, but you knew that. Ultimately, those singing his praises for his leftward drift will abandon Rauner in the general election in favor of the Democrats, either billionaire J.B. Pritzker, backed by Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and Mayor Rahm Emanuel, or Christopher Kennedy. That’s also how things are wired. But you knew that, too. The problem for Rauner is that, as of now, conservatives make up a sizable percentage of the Republican vote. Without them, where is he? But not so fast, says Pat Brady, a Rauner supporter, former Illinois GOP chairman and principal of the government affairs firm Next Generation Strategies. “I understand Ives’ anger. I know social conservatives are upset,” Brady said. “But to their credit, social conservatives, they don’t stay home on Election Day. “Bruce Rauner is the first governor to stand up to Mike Madigan, and the people of Illinois know it,” Brady said. “And 80 percent of the state has had enough with the Boss Democrats. So are conservatives going to throw their lot in with J.B. Pritzker and Madigan? I don’t think that’s going to happen.” That will be Rauner’s hard sell, to convince conservatives that without him, Illinois will remain Madiganistan. It will be difficult if not impossible for him to win without an effective coalition. But without conservatives, what is left of Rauner’s coalition? Wealthy businessmen? That’s not a coalition. In this, he’s quite like Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who also has the money guys with him but not much else, and remains quite beatable. Emanuel has been reaching out to Latinos in anticipation of more bad publicity and negative feelings coming his way when the murder trial of Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke, charged with the killing of black teenager Laquan McDonald, rolls around. Emanuel’s administration sat on the video of the shooting until after the mayor won re-election against Cook County Board Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia. Chuy won’t let him forget it. And neither will Chris Kennedy. But Emanuel has time and other people’s money. Rauner doesn’t have time, and he’ll be spending his own cash. On the Democratic side, at least Pritzker and Kennedy have a game plan. Pritzker with Boss Madigan and a massive TV ad budget. And Kennedy seeking minority votes with endorsements like that of Chuy Garcia’s. But what is Rauner’s game plan? That Boss Madigan has helped ruin the state? Rauner needs more than that, but his plan is becoming increasingly difficult to see. He was a businessman, not a social justice warrior at the beginning, then he wasn’t conservative, then he was a conservative for a few weeks, then he fired all the conservatives working for him and made sure he wasn’t a conservative by supporting taxpayer-funded abortion. It’s all been so very confusing. Conservatives will either find a challenger, or convince Rauner to do the math and hope he won’t seek re-election and save the Illinois GOP from a fight. Or he can run, while conservatives concentrate on their own state House and Senate races and keep the governor at a distance. “It’s best for the state if he announces he’s not running,” Ives said. “It would allow the party to come together and coalesce around another individual who could take on the Democrats. Because Rauner’s base has lost him. There’s no doubt about it. Talk to people around the state. You hear the same thing. His base isn’t with him.” Those who are quite close to the governor say he has no interest in caving, that he’ll fight. It might be politically bloody, but he doesn’t care. Rauner isn’t a weakling. He fought hard. He spent his money. He made terrible political mistakes that he didn’t have to make, but he insisted on making them. Now, he’s paying for them. Conservatives like Jeanne Ives will insist upon it.)

ILLINOIS FAMILY ACTION
— Is the Illinois GOP Civil War Finally Here? – John Biver
https://illinoisfamilyaction.org/2017/10/is-the-illinois-gop-civil-war-finally-here/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Now that prominent conservatives are seeing Governor Bruce Rauner for who he really is, we arrive at a genuinely dramatic moment in a state where the Republican Party’s failures have paved the way for Leftist policies to ruin the state. After signing several outrageously left-wing bills into law, an increasing number of rank and file conservatives and elected political leaders are finally seeing the truth about Governor Rauner. This gives conservatives in Illinois the opportunity to get their act together. Technically, every election cycle is another chance for limited government and pro-family Republicans — but some opportunities are greater than others. This is one. Examples of the lost chances happened in 1982 (Don Totten’s lt. governor candidacy), 2002 (the caucus leadership changes in the General Assembly), 2004 (Jack Ryan’s U.S. Senate campaign), and the past three gubernatorial primaries (all of which, 2006, 2010, and 2014, were lost due to State Senator Bill Brady’s involvement…that’s a sad story for another article). I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that there were people warning about Rauner four years ago — including IFI’s Laurie Higgins. Another voice, probably the loudest and most thorough, was Doug Ibendahl at RepublicanNewsWatch.com. Among the stronger recent statements, my favorites are that of State Rep. Peter Breen: “The Rauner experiment is over,” — and State Rep. David McSweeney: “Rauner is a failed governor.” Will Rauner run for reelection? He says he is, but we’ll see. If he does and conservatives mount a credible challenge to him, can Bruce and his millions of dollars be defeated? Not unless conservatives unite around a solid, intelligent and able governor/lt. governor ticket and run the best campaign of their lives. (Anyone reading this who personally knows Bill Brady, please ask him to stay the heck away from the race and enjoy leading the GOP super-minority in the state senate.) As simple as all of that sounds, Illinois conservatives have proven incapable of uniting, and in fact, have not been up to the task of successfully taking on the 40 years-in-the-making RINO (Republican in Name Only) establishment. Since Jim Thompson was elected Illinois governor in 1976, the RINOs have usually been happy to cooperate with the Democrats as long as individuals in the RINO club were able to become rich in the process. Yes, there were exceptions, such as moments during the decade-long state senate Republican majority in the 1990s, when Republicans acted as Republicans are supposed to. The fact that they were exceptions, however, is why we are where we are today. As several people are now realizing, this is a unique opportunity. President Donald Trump tapped the economic and cultural frustration in the electorate and defeated a talented primary field and the Democratic Party dynasty of our era in the general election. The same exasperation that exists in Illinois caused a majority of voters in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa to help candidate Trump take down the vaunted “blue wall.” Does it exist here on a large enough scale to send Rauner back to the private sector and take down the next silly Democratic Party left-wing nominee? Yes and yes. But it will take a competence level we haven’t seen from Illinois conservative candidates and consultants in a couple of generations. Does the candidate and consultant talent exist here to step up and lead? Yes on candidates and maybe on the consultants. Too many conservative campaign consultants don’t realize that in this era of Trump, things are different. The statewide campaign can no longer be all about their financial take on media buys, and their percentage of the cost of massive direct mailings and yard signs, or the fact that these “wise” consultants think they’re the smartest people in the room (they’re not). The campaign must be all about effectively communicating to the people of Illinois the serious problems that exist here. Those problems have gotten worse during Bruce Rauner’s tenure, and will speed-up in the wrong direction under a radical lefty like J.B. Pritzker. I have been saying this for decades — the people of Illinois are not much different from all those in the red states that surround us. This is not Vermont or Massachusetts or California. Cook County might not turn red any time soon, but there are plenty of what used to be called Reagan Democrats living in Chicago and its surrounds to give a conservative a primary and general election win. All that has been missing all these years is effective conservative leadership in the Illinois Republican Party. While Rauner’s money has purchased the party apparatus for the time being, a counter insurgency is possible and necessary. And the time for that is now.)

REAL GOP ILLINOIS
— Are Rauner’s allies pushing Rep. Jeanne Ives to spoil GOP primary?
https://realgopillinois.com/2017/10/03/rauner-allies-push-ives-split-gop-primary/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservative claim they are furious at Governor Rauner for signing HB40, which expands taxpayer-funded abortions in Illinois. Can we really believe them? Rauner’s money grubbers betrayed conservatives on abortion. Terri Koyne, a writer at the Illinois Review made this point. She wrote, “Rauner didn’t betray or deceive anyone [on abortion]- Rauner money grabbers did.” Terri is correct: Rauner’s conservative money grubbers can’t be trusted. Read Koyne’s piece which details Rauner’s pro-abortion history and his questionnaire statements. Is Jeanne Ives Rauner’s spoiler in the Republican primary for Governor? Rep. Jeanne Ives told Politico that she won’t rule out challenging Rauner in a primary and that operative DAN PROFT, who received $5 million from Rauner, is pushing Ives’ candidacy. It could be that Ives is Rauner’s spoiler candidate in the Republican primary to ensure a Rauner victory. Why would GOP voters support any candidate connected to Rauner and his allies, including REP. JEANNE IVES, whose ties to the Illinois Policy Institute and the Illinois Opportunity Project are long and deep? Will Dan Proft return Rauner’s donations? Proft and Pat Hughes of Illinois Opportunity Project blasted Rauner in a statement this weekend: “Gov. Rauner has mandated taxpayer funding of abortions at any time, for any reason. He additionally signed a law to make Illinois a sanctuary state. Do those initiatives sound like the priorities of a governor with ‘no social agenda?’ They sound like the priorities of a social justice warrior. No conservative reform governor has ever done so much for the liberal agenda.” Real GOP Illinois is relieved that Proft and Hughes are finally condemning Governor Rauner after supporting him and takes his donations for at least the last five years. Will Proft be returning the $5 million he received from Rauner or the millions he received from Rauner’s second biggest donor Dick Uihlein? How can Dan Proft’s word can be trusted due to the donations he has taken from Rauner? Greg Hinz at Crain’s just confirmed a deal between John Tillman, Dan Proft and Governor Rauner for Richard Uihlein to raise $30 million for Rauner if Proft could control Republican legislative races and jobs for IPI staffers. Does that sound like good conservative values to you? Too little too late from John Tillman of Illinois Policy Institute In a recent Facebook post, JOHN TILLMAN, CEO of the “conservative” Illinois Policy Institute and one of Rauner’s biggest allies, wrote, “Benedict Rauner going back on his word and signing HB40. Whether you are pro life or pro choice, a politician loses when he gives his word to many people and goes back on it, including to Cardinal [Blase] Cupich. Further, if you care only about economic issues, he has put that entire agenda at risk by betraying those to whom he gave his word.” Tillman, until now, has been quiet on Rauner. He’s been called the “defacto governor” due to his close ties to the Illinois Governor. Tillman and his Illinois Policy Institute group have also been silent on the Trust Act, which Rauner signed to keep illegal immigrants safe from deportation by making Illinois a sanctuary state. Tillman’s groups not returning Rauner’s large donations  Illinois Policy Institute has received more than $500,000 from Rauner’s family foundation in the past and millions more from donors tied-to Rauner. Illinois Opportunity Project is connected to the Illinois Policy Institute and is the political hit group for Rauner. IOP’s donors are not public which begs the question how much as IOP received from Rauner? Real GOP Illinois believes they made millions from Rauner. Illinois Policy Institute and Illinois Opportunity Project are squawking about Rauner’s abortion betrayal now but they took his money for years even after he continued to fund Planned Parenthood with taxpayer money and after he signed a bill to force doctors and crisis pregnancy centers to refer abortion cases in 2016. Rauner’s conservative supporters, including Rep. Ives, have been silent on these too. Where was their outrage then? Can we believe John Tillman and Illinois Policy Institute when they condemn Governor Rauner? Do they really want to defeat Rauner or help him? Will they return the millions of dollars he has donated to them? Bruce Rauner was a danger to the Illinois Republican Party in 2014. Despite his extreme social positions, Republican leaders knelt before him for the money. Why should conservatives of conscience trust these money grubbers again?)

WORLD NET DAILY
— SHOOTER IN BLOODY VEGAS GUN MASSACRE WAS LONGTIME FEDERAL AGENT – LEO HOHMANN  (DIERSEN: Will my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes stress that I worked for the Post Office 1966-1969, for IRS 1971-1980, and for GAO 1980-1997?)
http://www.wnd.com/2017/10/shooter-in-bloody-vegas-gun-massacre-was-longtime-federal-agent/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: More than 48 hours after the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history, police still don’t have a motive for the horrific crime. But a more complete profile of the killer is beginning to emerge. Stephen Paddock, the Las Vegas shooter who killed 59 people at a country music festival Sunday night, worked over a 10-year period as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, an IRS agent and a defense auditor. A spokeswoman for the federal Office of Personnel Management told the Associated Press Tuesday that Paddock’s employment included two years as a mail carrier from 1976 to 1978. That was followed by a six-year stint with the Internal Revenue Service until 1984. And then he worked as a defense auditor for about 18 months. The latest revelation suggests the U.S. government should have an extensive file on its former employee, Stephen Paddock, who not only worked directly for the government for nearly a decade but then worked another year-and-a-half for federal weapons contractor Lockheed Martin. With his institutional knowledge of how the federal bureaucracy works, Paddock was anything but the typical mass shooter. He would have been able to cover his tracks in the planning stages of his attack. The Islamic State, or ISIS, has doubled down on its claim of responsibility for the attack, saying Paddock had converted to Islam in recent months and become a “soldier of the caliphate.” But given the rapidly degrading status of the Islamic State, some analysts believe it could be entering a new phase where it is willing to risk credibility in its propaganda message in exchange for a short term boost in its prestige among Islamic terrorists worldwide. In other news, leaked photos of the scene inside Paddock’s hotel room at the Mandalay Bay resort appeared to show a note on a small table near the shooter’s dead body. As of this report, no details have been released about what may have been written on that note. . .Video everywhere. . .Girlfriend back in the spotlight)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Arlington Heights Memorial Library canceled an immigrants rights workshop this week out of “concerns for safety” after the library’s voice mail and board president Deb Smart’s home phone were flooded with calls from people objecting to the meeting. “It was an unsettling process,” Smart says. “People called the switchboard, saying they’d call (federal immigration officials) and have a raid done.” She says she was called names and threatened, and ultimately involved local police. The free workshop was sponsored by the Community Activism Law Alliance and was advertised as informing immigrants on what to do and say when in contact with immigration and police officers and how to prepare “emergency kits” if they’re at risk for detention. Smart said a similar workshop might be held in the future at a different location. The library’s official statement, posted on its website, says “the decision to cancel the workshop was based on concerns for the safety and welfare of workshop attendees, library staff and library users.”)

WASHINGTON POST
— Retirement wave – Eric Yoder  (DIERSEN: My Democrat superiors’ success in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old was a horrific waste. Who/what do you blame for my Democrat superiors’ success in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old?)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2017/09/26/qa-for-federal-workers-retirement-wave/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Question: Whatever happened to the “retirement wave?” Wasn’t that supposed to create a lot of vacancies for younger federal employees to move up? Answer: Predictions of a wave of federal employee retirements date back many years. This comes from the large population of baby boomer workers — almost all now in their mid-50s or older — becoming old enough to meet the needed combinations of age and years of service. Some of those combinations allow for retirement as early as 55 — and even earlier in law enforcement and certain other occupations. However, except for those jobs, there is no mandatory retirement in the government. Many employees continue working out of desire or need — 15 percent already are eligible to retire, and the average federal retirement age now is about 62, up by more than two years over the past 10 years. Just under 64,000 of the 2.1 million federal workers outside the self-funding U.S. Postal Service retired in the fiscal year ending last September. That was about average for the past 10 years and actually the lowest since 2010. If budgets get tight, agencies may try to cut their staff costs by offering early retirements. But that’s just another form of optional retirement.)

DAILY HERALD
— More than 100 people protest Wheaton landlord over ‘back to Vietnam’ sign – Justin Kmitch  (DIERSEN: Because I refuse to hate Sandberg, Sandberg-haters hate me. Sandberg-haters are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20170923/more-than-100-people-protest-wheaton-landlord-over-back-to-vietnam-sign
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The normally bustling corner of Front and Main streets in downtown Wheaton was even busier Saturday afternoon as more than 100 sign-waving protesters gathered to protest a local landlord. The group’s members, led by longtime Wheaton resident Jessica Prewitt, were speaking out against local businessman Robert Sandberg and a sign he posted two years ago inside the front door of a former Vietnamese restaurant that says the owners “went back to Vietnam.” The groundswell developed after Prewitt Wednesday posted a picture of the sign on social media. “To me, that sign says, ‘You’re not welcome here, get out,'” Prewitt said Saturday outside Sandberg’s men’s clothing store. “Wheaton is a very tolerant, diverse community. There’s just no room for that here.” Protesters lined the corner in front of Sandberg’s store, at times blocking his front door, holding signs that read “Diversity is Delightful,” “Be Kind,” “Give Hate no Home” and “Wheaton Welcomes All.” Kate McElwee brought her two young daughters for what she called a “teaching moment.” “This is so much bigger than Mr. Sandberg versus the restaurant owners,” she said. “This is about us peacefully using our freedom of speech to speak out against an enemy of diversity in our community.” Some people not associated with the protest said they felt obligated to go buy something from Sandberg because they felt he was being treated unfairly. Others yelled things like “fake news!” and “say no to DACA” as they drove east on Front Street. Inside his store, Sandberg defended his right to keep the sign posted until he receives a handwritten apology from the owners of Luong-Loi, who he says skipped out on their rent and owe him $17,000. The operators of the restaurant, which eventually reopened across the street from its former location, deny on Facebook that they have any unmet obligations to Sandberg. “Look, what these snowflakes are doing out here is petty. I’m no racist,” Sandberg said of the protesters. “I have black friends and I’m actively supporting (former member of Congress from Florida) Allen West, who is black and a great, great man. This is a dispute between me and a former tenant who lied to me and who owes me money. Now these people have people calling my phone and telling me I’m a racist.” Sandberg said he posted the sign because he grew tired of people coming into his store and asking him what happened to the Vietnamese restaurant that had been there for about 30 years. And, he’s willing to take it down, with conditions. “It could be taken down yesterday. All you have to do is have them give me a letter saying that they lied to me. They told me wrong. They didn’t go back to Vietnam,” Sandberg said. “Give me a reason you did what you did or just say, ‘We told you wrong. We made a mistake.'” Luong-Loi serves lunch and dinner in a building formerly owned by Sandberg at 111-113 N. Main St. The city gained ownership of the long-vacant property in 2006 after six years of condemnation proceedings against Sandberg. In late 2014, the city council approved the sale of the building to the restaurateurs for $160,111. The restaurant reopened about a year later after extensive renovations of the building’s facade. Luong-Loi employees present Saturday declined to comment but pointed to a statement released Friday on their Facebook page. “On behalf of the Luong-Loi family, I want to thank Jessica and everyone here for their support and concern on this matter. Thank you to all our customers, the City of Wheaton, and the entire community for your continued support of our family and business,” the statement reads. “As for Mr. Sandberg and the ‘We went back to Vietnam’ sign: We want to thank Mr. Sandberg for allowing Luong-Loi to lease his property for the past 25-plus years. We have no other obligations to Mr. Sandberg.”)

I served on the 2008 Illinois Republican Party (IRP) Platform and Resolutions Committee and I attended the 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016 IRP State Conventions as a delegate.)
http://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511221641-durkin-hiring-of-former-rauner-aide-living-with-reporter-raises-conflict-questions
(FROM THE ARTICLE: House Minority Leader Jim Durkin’s (R-Western Springs) hiring of Michael Mahoney, a former aide to Gov. Bruce Rauner, has the potential to cause some conflict of interest problems for WTTW, the primary public broadcasting member station in Chicago. The news of Mahoney’s hiring was reported in a Sept. 17 story in Prairie State Wire. According to the real estate listing site BlockShopper, Mahoney lives with WTTW statehouse reporter Amanda Vinicky in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago. “Amanda adheres to our News Standards which require balance, fairness and disclosure,” Mary Field, the station’s executive producer of “Chicago Tonight,” wrote in an email in response to being asked how WTTW would maintain balance in its coverage of the General Assembly. “I believe her works speaks for itself in that regard.” The Prairie State Wire story said that the hiring of Mahoney was being pushed by one of the Springfield’s top lobbyists and deal makers, Nancy Kimme, and David Walsh, Durkin’s top aide. Mahoney, 31, would replace Andrew Freiheit, 46, of Wheaton, who worked for the Illinois House Republicans, including Durkin’s predecessors Lee Daniels and Tom Cross, for more than two decades. Sources said that the move was precipitated by staff changes in Rauner’s office, where Kimme once had unrivaled access to information on state contracts, hiring and legislation. That access has reportedly been shut down with the departure of aides close to her, among them former Chief of Staff Richard Goldberg, Campaign Manager Mike Zolnierowicz, Communications Director Lance Trover and Research Director Edward Murphy. “She (Kimme) needs a new way in,” a lobbyist familiar with the situation told Prairie State Wire. “Durkin and Walsh are looking to help.” Commenting on an earlier story about the appearance of conflicts of interests when reporters are in relationships with people they report on, Prof. Adam Penenberg of New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute — who garnered national attention in 1998 for unmasking serial fabricator Stephen Glass of the New Republic — said that many ethics codes in journalism warn of any appearance of a conflict of interest. “One good rule governing potential conflicts of interest is whether a reporter might pull his or her punches,” he said. “Write a critical story and your spouse could, potentially, suffer the consequences. She could even get fired and result in a significant loss of income.” The Associated Press, in its “News Values and Principles” for Reporters, states: “Editorial employees are expected to be scrupulous in avoiding any political activity, whether they cover politics regularly or not. Non-editorial employees must refrain from political activity unless they obtain approval from a manager.” It also urges discussing any potential conflicts with one’s manager. “And a supervisor must be informed when a spouse — or other members of an employee’s household — has any ongoing involvement in political causes, either professionally or personally,” it reads.)
