Jeanne Ives, the Wheaton Republican who lost a March bid for the GOP nomination for governor to Rauner by 3 percentage points, is urging a vote for Republican legislative candidates and not Illinois’ chief executive. In an appearance on KFTK-FM 97.1, a conservative talk station in the St. Louis suburb of Florrisant, Mo., that reaches southwestern Illinois, Ives criticized both Rauner and Republican state Sen. Sam McCann of Plainview who is running for governor under the Conservative Party banner. “The Republican Party’s in complete disarray. Let’s face it, Rauner’s going to lose, in my estimation,” Ives said, adding, “So, the fight is in the Illinois House and in the Illinois Senate. Those are your first line of defense against the bad policies going forward.” Ives, who has not endorsed a candidate for governor, said there are Republicans “all over the place as to what they’re going to do on the governor’s race,” in part because of Rauner’s signature on laws expanding abortion, immigration and transgender rights. She said people who thought they “could find a conservative in Sam McCann” shouldn’t trust the state senator because of mailers he’s sending out attacking some social conservatives as backers of Rauner and of being less than Republicans. “So now conservatives have been betrayed once again and they have no place to go,” Ives said.)

In an August tweet, Roskam described as “absurd” a statement by his Democratic opponent comparing Trump with al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden. “This district is discerning,” Roskam said, and voters want a candidate who will represent their interests independent of the president. But Roskam’s reluctance to embrace Trump isn’t enough for some of the anti-Trump Republicans he’s trying to capture. “Peter Roskam has distanced himself from Trump, but he doesn’t stand up to him,” said Bill Wentz, 73, a lifelong Republican and former federal government lawyer. Roskam hasn’t done enough to fight the president on economic policies that Wentz says undermine traditional Republican support for free markets by picking “winners and losers.” He also is uncomfortable with Trump’s failure to fully embrace U.S. intelligence agencies’ finding that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. elections. Each is determined around the same time of the year and both take effect in the following year, assuming that there is a COLA and/or pay raise. The comments we see indicate that some federal employees and retirees do not understand the difference between the two. This is understandable; the federal pay and retirement systems are governed by a complex process with many different factors that can lead to endless variations depending on a person’s situation. . .The purpose of this article is to explain the differences in the COLA and the annual pay raise in an effort to clear up any misconceptions or confusion. The COLA The 2019 COLA was just announced. This applies to federal retirees and Social Security recipients, but not to current federal employees. In 2019, it will be 2.8%. The process for determining the COLA is automatic. You will either get one or not based solely on a formula that is put in place by law and determined based on the cost of living as measured by the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).
