DAILY SIGNAL
— Rogue Federal Bureaucrats Threaten Trump’s Agenda – Fred Lucas  (DIERSEN: While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, I never tried to sabotage its Affirmative Action (AA), Diversity, or Inclusion efforts. The federal government never charged me with that because I always carried out all the AA, Diversity, and Inclusion orders that I was given.  I can provide many examples in which I was ordered to give preference to my subordinates because they were Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran, and that I carried out those orders.)
http://dailysignal.com/2017/02/05/rogue-federal-bureaucrats-threaten-trumps-agenda/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Recent scandals in the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Internal Revenue Service demonstrated that it’s almost impossible to fire federal employees, many of whom reportedly intend to go rogue by not implementing President Donald Trump’s agenda. Conservatives are hopeful the time has come for civil service reform that would rein in this permanent class of government workers who have voiced outright hostility to the new administration. Some have even called it the “fourth branch of government” or “alt-government.” “This is a situation where people voted and elected a president who is lawfully trying to complete those tasks [he promised in the campaign], while unelected bureaucrats are willing to overturn the will of the people,” Ben Wilterdink, director of commerce at the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, told The Daily Signal. Among federal employees, about 95 percent of political contributions went to Democrat Hillary Clinton during the presidential race, according to an analysis by The Hill. Some of those federal workers are now in consultation with departed Obama administration officials to determine how they can push back against the Trump administration’s agenda, The Washington Post reported last week. At the State Department, for example, nearly 1,000 government workers signed a letter protesting Trump’s executive order on refugees. A few days later, Trump had to fire acting Attorney General Sally Yates after she announced she wouldn’t defend the administration’s refugee policy. White House press secretary Sean Spicer said State Department employees who oppose the policy “should either get with the program, or they can go.” “If a federal employee doesn’t like the ideological foundation or likely outcomes of a presidential directive, it doesn’t mean that the directive is not legal. It means that the views of the federal employee are in conflict with the views of the president who runs the federal government,” said Neil Siefring, vice president of Hilltop Advocacy and a former Republican House staffer, in a column for The Daily Caller. “In that instance,” Siefring added, “the solution should not be to resist the actions of the president in their professional capacity as a career civil servant in the workplace. The solution is for that federal employee to honorably resign, not actively or passively hamper the White House.” What if an employee won’t resign? Addressing the problem with the federal workforce won’t be easy, according to experts interviewed by The Daily Signal. “You can fire federal employees, it’s just that nobody wants to put up with the process,” Don Devine, former director of the Office of Personnel Management during the Reagan administration, told The Daily Signal. Multiple appeals can be made through the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and the National Labor Relations Board. “It’s almost impossible to discipline employees because it can be appealed to through the merit system, the labor relations systems, or through the EEOC,” Devine said. “We don’t have a civil service system; we have a dual civil service-labor relations system.” During the Obama administration, two of its biggest scandals involved the IRS and Department of Veterans Affairs. In 2013, a Treasury Department inspector general report determined the IRS had been targeting conservative groups. In 2014, a VA inspector general’s report revealed falsified appointments in which some veterans died while waiting for care. Years later, conservative remain frustrated that federal workers weren’t held accountable. “I will take your IRS employees and raise you the EPA, where story after story, a worker was viewing porn on work time and couldn’t be fired because the process is fraught with appeals,” Wilterdink said. “It’s hard to argue we have an accountable government when someone can’t be fired for years at a time.” Earlier this year, the U.S. House revived the Holman Rule, named after a Democrat congressman who introduced it in 1876. It would allow lawmakers to cut the pay of individual federal workers or a government program. There are other proposals for holding federal workers accountable. House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, introduced a bill in January to hold seriously tax delinquent people ineligible for federal civilian employment, federal contracts, or government grants. This bill was proposed in response to IRS data found more than 100,000 federal civilian employees owed more than $1 billion in unpaid taxes at the end of fiscal year 2015. Adding to the challenge is the process commonly known as burrowing. Frequently, political appointees from one administration convert to a career position that comes with civil service protections, allowing them to continue implementing policy—or resisting the new administration’s approach. The Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act of 1883 was passed to stop raw political party appointments from securing federal government jobs, or a spoils system. The law introduced the merit system into hiring practices and made numerous civil service positions untouchable after they were filled. However, burrowing has caused a de facto spoils system, Wilterdink said, because, “the pendulum has swung so far to protecting federal employees” that it allows administrations to keep their people in office long term. Significant reform doesn’t mean recreating a spoils system, according to Robert Moffit, a senior fellow at The Heritage Foundation who was an assistant Office of Personnel Management director during the Reagan administration. Moffit said a balanced approach would be more desirable. “You need to have strong managers in each agency to make sure the president’s agenda is properly executed,” Moffit told The Daily Signal. “You must also have a bright line between career and non-career staff so there is no politicization of the merit system.” Moffit also supports legislation to allow the president to order the firing of career officials who either “broke the law or severely undermined the public’s trust.” “Even President Obama referred to what IRS officials did as outrageous and nothing happened,” Moffit said. “The VA matter is still unresolved. The people responsible for those waiting lists aren’t accountable and people died.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Opposition to an all-day civil rights seminar planned for New Trier High School has led to a group of parents creating a website and Facebook page to call for the addition of conservative speakers and presenters, or cancellation of the event. As currently planned, students at the Winnetka and Northfield campuses will hear from a keynote speaker at the Feb. 28 event on “Understanding Today’s Struggle for Racial Civil Rights,” and choose two of more than 100 sessions or workshops to attend, according to Assistant Supt. Tim Hayes. Keynote speakers are National Book Award winner Colson Whitehead, author of “The Underground Railroad,” and Andrew Ayden, co-author with U.S. Rep. John Lewis of “March,” a graphic novel series chronicling Lewis’ civil rights history. District Supt. Linda Yonke said students must attend the keynote speech and a 50-minute homeroom presentation, but students who are uncomfortable with anything in the sessions will be able to leave. Opponents of the current format and speaker lineup say it lacks conservative voices, and thus presents a biased and politicized offering of liberal viewpoints on the issues. Wilmette resident Mark Glennon, whose son is a New Trier junior, called the schedule of presenters “flagrantly and unquestionably politically extreme.”  “What I’d like to see happen is simple: just some balance in what’s presented,” he said, adding that debate among New Trier parents and residents has caused strife in an otherwise friendly community.)

GOPUSA
— Can Trump defuse the ‘saboteurs’ in DC?  (DIERSEN: While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, I never tried to sabotage its Affirmative Action (AA), Diversity, or Inclusion efforts. The federal government never charged me with that because I always carried out all the AA, Diversity, and Inclusion orders that I was given.  I can provide many examples in which I was ordered to give preference to my subordinates because they were Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran, and that I carried out those orders.)
http://www.gopusa.com/can-trump-defuse-the-saboteurs-in-dc/
(FROM THE ARTICFLE: A former attorney with the DOJ says rules for firing federal civil service employees will make it very difficult for Donald Trump to “drain the swamp” in Washington, as he promised numerous times during his campaign. When President Trump fired acting Attorney General Sally Yates earlier this week, it brought to light a serious problem at the Justice Department: Obama devotees and appointees ensconced in the agency. Yates, one of those holders from the Obama administration, had defiantly refused to defend Trump’s executive order calling for a temporary ban on refugees from seven predominately Muslim countries. Conservative activists have praised the president for his decision to fire Yates. J. Christian Adams, a former Justice Department attorney, contends the Obama appointee was merely fulfilling her assignment: disrupt the new administration’s plans. “Sally Yates was one of thousands of saboteurs who have been left at the Justice Department from the Obama years. She was just the first one to engage in her act of sabotage,” he said during a recent interview on American Family Radio. “There are many, many, many dozens of hundreds yet to come from other employees who have been left there.” Ronald Reagan once said: “The nearest thing to eternal life we will ever see on this earth is a government program.” According to Adams, that could also apply to the federal bureaucracy as a whole. “… You can’t get rid of it; Trump can’t get rid of it [or] change it. You can’t drain the swamp anymore because of federal civil service rules,” exclaims the founder of the Election Law Center. “… It’s almost like you need to go back to the spoil system where [when] you win an election you get to pick the employees. Maybe there was value to that because it actually made the government responsive to the people – because right now it’s responsive to the institutional left.” Adams believes it would take a courageous effort by Congress to change an environment he describes as unaccountable and left-leaning.)

(FROM THE EDITORIAL: AS President Donald Trump steps up his attacks on the “dishonest” press, major American media outlets are seeing an apparent resurgence after years of downward spiral. Newspapers, radio and television had begun to see growth during the 2016 election campaign, and that has accelerated since the inauguration, despite — or perhaps because of — the vitriol from the new president and his aides. While much of the industry has been slumping in recent years, the war between the president and the news media has seemingly drawn in a flood of new readers, listeners and viewers, including many willing to pay for news. CNN viewership rose a stunning 94 per cent during the week of Mr Trump’s inauguration in January, even as the president assailed the cable news operator as a purveyor of “fake news.” The New York Times announced this week it added nearly 300,000 paid digital subscribers in the fourth quarter of last year, the highest number since it began its paywall model.)

— How About “America First” for College Admissions? – Cliff Kincaid  (DIERSEN: UIC admitted me in 1966 when I was 17, NIU in 1969 when 20, Loyola on 1972 when I was 23, DePaul in 1976 when I was 27, and IIT in 1992 when I was 43, but because of my demographics, I doubt that they would admit if was 17, 20, 23, 27, or 43 today.)
http://www.gopusa.com/?p=20246
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a recent article, “Surge in foreign students may be crowding Americans out of elite colleges,” The Washington Post stumbled on the truth about one of the factors affecting the rising cost of college for American students. The percentage of foreign students enrolling in both public and private colleges and universities has skyrocketed. Their sponsors, Middle East governments and regimes like China, buy their way into American colleges and universities for their own students, forcing up costs for the dwindling number of Americans fortunate enough to gain admission. It is estimated that over one million international students are enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities. That figure has doubled in 15 years. The growing international enrollment is crowding out qualified U.S. students.)

BOLINGBROOK PATCH
— Group Plans Protest Against Bolingbrook Mayor, Donald Trump  So far 5 people say they plan to protest the grand opening of the Claar/Bolingbrook First campaign headquarters. – Shannon Antinori
http://patch.com/illinois/bolingbrook/group-plans-protest-against-bolingbrook-mayor-donald-trump
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A grassroots group said it’s planning to protest a planned grand opening of the Bolingbrook First campaign headquarters on Monday, Feb. 6. A Facebook group called “Vote Roger Claar Out in 2017” is asking community members to become part of a physical and virtual protest via a “Protest Roger Claar and Donald Trump!” event. According to the event page, the group takes issue with “(Claar’s) high-dollar fundraiser in Bolingbrook for Donald Trump, his never ending support for him” and accuses the mayor of a “long list of questionable decisions for the village.” The long-serving mayor and the Bolingbrook First slate are seeking reelection in April. Candidates are: Claar, currently in his 30th year as mayor  Village Clerk Carol Penning, now in her seventh term  Trustee Mike Lawler, who has served on the board since 1995  Trustee candidate Shelton L. Watts, who was recently sworn in to fill a vacancy on the village board  Trustee Maria A. Zarate, elected in 2013  A grand opening at the Bolingbrook First campaign headquarters, 128 E. Boughton Road, is slated for 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 6. “Bring your friends and family to meet and mingle with the candidates, and feel free to pick up a yard sign while you’re at it,” the Facebook event page for the grand opening said. “We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.” Reached via Facebook, the organizers of the protest said they did wish to be identified, but stated that the page is not run by members of the Bolingbrook First opponents “Bolingbrook United.” “For various reasons we have kept our identities confidential – including to avoid potential targeting from the mayor in retribution for opposing him publicly,” the group told Patch. As of Monday afternoon, 20 people had indicated they are “interested” in the Feb. 6 demonstration while five have marked themselves as “going.”  “It’s also a ‘virtual’ protest,” the group said. “We want not only people to show up in person but if they are unable to do so then to simply mark that they are ‘interested’ in the event.” Claar did not immediately respond to an email from Patch on Monday afternoon. While it denied affiliation with Bolingbrook United, the protest group did say it supports the slate’s mayoral candidate, current Will County board member Jackie Traynere, saying it is looking for a “breath of fresh air.” The group also said it backs the rest of the Bolingbrook United slate of labor attorney Jaime Olson for village clerk and trustee candidates Robert Jaskiewicz, owner of a business lending firm; Mary Helen Reyna, owner of a firm that specializes in immigration law; and Terri Ransom, an IT consultant. “The reality in Bolingbrook is that the same man has been in office for over 30 years and for at least the last 16 years there has been no other candidate’s name on the actual ballot and we desperately need a change,” the group told Patch in an email. “(Claar’s) His failure to distance himself from Trump’s actions over the past few days against Muslims is further evidence of the fact that he’s lost touch with our diverse community.”)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/politics/ct-woman-impersonated-lawmakers-wife-gop-retreat-20170128-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A woman impersonated the wife of a GOP lawmaker and snuck into the congressional Republican retreat in Philadelphia Thursday, the same day President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence appeared, retreat organizers told lawmakers late Saturday. The revelation came as the nonprofit Congressional Institute that organizes the retreat investigates how audio of the gathering leaked. In an email to GOP lawmakers, institute president Mark Strand did not directly say that the impersonator was the same person who leaked the audio, but that was the implication. “The Congressional Institute is continuing to investigate this breach in order to fully understand how it happened and to ensure it does not happen again,” said Strand’s email, which was obtained by The Associated Press. The audio was leaked to several news outlets and first reported by The Washington Post. It reveals lawmakers airing concerns about the practical difficulties and political risks of repealing and replacing President Barack Obama’s health care law, among other things. There is also audio of a question-and-answer session with Pence, indicating that the intruder was in the same room as the vice president, which raises security concerns. It was not immediately clear if she was also present for the session with Trump, who spoke before Pence but did not engage in a private discussion with lawmakers. The email says that the unauthorized person “misrepresented herself on multiple occasions to retreat organizers as the spouse of an elected official” and used counterfeit credentials. She went through the same security checkpoints as every other attendee, including magnetometers, and was escorted from the event around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, after Trump and Pence left. The email says officials are working to “ascertain the identity of the woman in question.”  Capitol Police and the Sergeant at Arms are investigating, according to a statement Saturday night from Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., who chairs the House GOP conference.)

— Rauner contract offer generous – Editorial  (DIERSEN: What major “offers” have you accepted? In 1997, when I was 49 years old, I “accepted” my Democrat GAO superiors’ early retirement “offer.” They made it very clear that if I did not accept their “offer,” constructively, they would kill me. Of course, since 1997, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have shouted that the “offer” was far too generous – in today’s dollars, $50,856 Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) pension and $17,288 health/dental/vision insurance subsidy for life. In my defense, I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $94,610-$122,991, and I paid 7% of my salary into the CSRS. In addition, I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 33.)

WASHINGTON POST
— In unprecedented move, pension plan cuts benefits promised to retirees – Jonnelle Marte  (DIERSEN: If you are in line to get a pension or if you are getting a pension, who wants your pension to be cut, if not eliminated? I should write a book about those who want my $50,856 Civil Service Retirement System pension to be cut, if not eliminated. I could focus on those who are full of hatred against those who are in line to get a pension and against those like me who are getting a pension.  I could focus on the aforesaid haters who regularly read GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails.)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/get-there/wp/2017/01/27/in-unprecedented-move-pension-plan-approves-benefit-cuts-for-retired-iron-workers/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A pension fund in Cleveland became the first plan to approve benefit cuts for current retirees — even though it is still years away from running out of cash. The move, some critics say, could open the door for other troubled pension plans to follow suit. The financially strapped Iron Workers Local 17 Pension fund proposed a plan for extending its life span by reducing benefits for workers and retirees. Now that the plan has received final approval, roughly half of the 2,000 participants will see their pension benefits shrink on Feb. 1. Benefits will be cut by 20 percent on average, but some retirees are expecting their monthly payments to be slashed by as much as 60 percent. The unprecedented move comes after a 2014 law made it possible for troubled pension plans to reduce benefits to retirees if it would improve the financial health of the fund. The legislation dealt a major blow to federal protections that for nearly 40 years guarded the financial promises made to retirees. The announcement stunned some former ironworkers, many of whom said they sacrificed time with family and other opportunities so that they could earn a secure income stream in retirement. Joe Finley, 63, said he regularly worked 12 hours a day and took weekend shifts so that he could earn more credits for his pension. Now, his monthly check is set to be reduced to $1,900, from the roughly $3,500 he was previously receiving. The lost income is about equal to his monthly mortgage payment, causing Finley to worry that he may have to put his three-bedroom home on the market. “This is the devastation that I knew was coming, but I just couldn’t wrap my mind around it,” Finley said after learning the news. “You play by all the rules … and then they pull the rug out from under you.” The fund’s proposal was first green-lighted by the Treasury Department late last year before being put up for a vote by members this month. The impact will vary based on the individual’s work status and age. About half of the participants are not going to see any cuts at all because of their age or a disability. Others will see minor reductions. But more than 300 participants will see their checks cut by between 30 and 60 percent. Some people who took advantage of an early retirement option are among those facing the steepest cuts. Some critics say the divide in outcomes may have ultimately pinned workers, who could have felt they were choosing between a smaller pension and no pension at all, against retirees who feel they have few options for making up the lost pay. More than half of the 1,938 people eligible to vote did not cast a vote. About 16 percent, or 300, voted against the cuts. Another 600 members voted in favor of the changes. “I’ve been sort of sitting here staring off in the distance,” said Larry Burruel, 68, who is expecting his pension check to be cut in half. “We’re going to have to make a lot of cuts,” said Burruel, who is worried he and his wife will struggle to afford their medical bills with the smaller paycheck. The leaders of the ironworkers fund said making cuts now could prevent the need for more dramatic reductions in the future. Without changes, the ironworkers fund was on pace to run out of cash by 2024. At that point, the plan would have had to rely on the federal insurance program meant to protect multiemployer plans. But that program is also facing steep shortfalls and is on track to run out of money by 2025. “The suspension plan, while reducing their pensions now, is a better alternative than letting the pension fund become insolvent,” the trustees of the fund said in a statement. The ironworkers make up only a small portion of the roughly 1 million workers and retirees in pension plans that are on track to exhaust funds within the next two decades, according to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, which insures private pensions. The Central States Pension Fund, one of the largest multiemployer pension plans in the country, became the first fund to apply to cut benefits under the law with a proposal that would have affected nearly 300,000 current and retired truckers. But Treasury rejected that application in the spring, saying the changes would not be enough to save the financially struggling fund. Some pension advocates said they worry that the approval of the cuts in Cleveland could open the door for other financially struggling pension plans to follow suit. “Retirees … performed dangerous work counting on the promise of their pensions,” said Karen Ferguson, director of the Pension Rights Center. “It is simply wrong that after their years of backbreaking work, they have been left out in the cold.” Ferguson and other consumer advocates argue that rejecting the cuts would have given lawmakers more time to come up with another plan for shoring up pension funds. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), who is critical of the cuts, called on Congress to find a long-term fix. “Too many retirees across Ohio face uncertainty over the benefits they’ve earned,” he said. “We need to work on a bipartisan solution to protect Ohio workers from the mistakes made by those managing their funds.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The attorney representing petitioners who want to merge Lisle, Warrenville and Woodridge with Naperville says the initiative is all about money. Annexing the smaller communities to Naperville would allow the larger city to use economies of scale to reduce the property tax burden on residents, Frank Avila said. The Chicago attorney said he still “is not authorized” to say who is behind the merger push. “This is about making life more affordable,” Avila said. But mayors of the four communities say talk of lowering taxes is “smoke and mirrors” and those behind the proposal have a political motive, especially because of the “clandestine and haphazard” way the idea has come to the fore. “People with serious issues bring it forward in a little more responsible manner, and this certainly was not done in a responsible manner,” Warrenville Mayor David Brummel said. “I just don’t think it’s all about taxes.”)

http://www.wjbdradio.com/politics/2017/01/27/trump-pushes-voter-fraud-claim-citing-fringe-blogger
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Trump cited a new study Thursday to back up his claim that millions of ballots were cast illegally in the 2016 election – this one from a widely discredited blogger who has thus far declined to provide any evidence. The president’s latest source: 56-year old Gregg Phillips of Austin, Texas, a man who has been roundly criticized by mainstream academics and political opponents as a conspiracy theorist. His critics note that Phillips has claimed the Obama Department of Homeland Security hacked the election. Asked by ABC News if he had evidence to support his claim that millions of people voted illegally, Phillips demurred, saying he “is building that case right now.” “I may be a whacko, I may be a nut, I don’t know, I don’t really care what they say about me,” he said. Trump thought enough of Phillips’s theory that he cited it on Twitter. “Gregg Phillips and crew say at least 3,000,000 votes were illegal. We must do better!” he tweeted on Friday morning. To Phillips, who has argued that a recent tax lien against him is the product of political persecution by the IRS, the presidential attention came as a shock. “That was a little unexpected,” Phillips said of the Trump tweet. “What are you going to say? I mean, I’m just a regular guy and all of a sudden the President tweets my name and my whole world lit up for a little while today.” . . . On Thursday, Trump made Phillips the newest expert to bolster his voter fraud claims.)

http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/01/kinzinger-hopeful-to-see-great-things-from-trump.html
— WHY IS AMERICA SO RICH?  Why is America the world’s richest nation? Is it mostly because of the government, or is it thanks to entrepreneurs and businessmen? Historian Burt Folsom of Hillsdale College explains.  (DIERSEN: What do you say to my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who are filled with hatred of the federal government, federal employees, and federal retirees?  The are especially filled with hatred of me because I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years and because I have been a federal retiree for more than 19 years.)

Because in 1988, I became an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged GAO with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation.)

— Obama gave foreign ‘students’ 180,000 U.S. jobs, $32B in lost wages – PAUL BEDARD  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, Democrat employers and RINO employers make it clear that they prefer citizens of foreign countries over citizens of America.)
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/obama-gave-foreign-students-180000-u.s.-jobs-32b-in-lost-wages/article/2613146
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A pro-immigrant program was expanded under President Obama that paid U.S. firms $2.7 billion to hire 180,000 foreign “students,” jobs that likely otherwise would have gone to Americans, according to a new report. The so-called “Optional Practical Training” was supposedly set up for foreign students but actually included no training and put college graduates in the high-paying jobs for three years. The Center for Immigration Studies, which on Friday urged President Trump to stop the program, estimated that the jobs paid $60,000, suggesting a total of $11 billion in annual wages lost to American workers, over $32 billion over three years. In his Inaugural Address, Trump advocated an “America First” theme. The Center said the program, also used under former President George W. Bush, paid companies $10,000-$15,000 to hire the foreigner college grads for three years.)

— Businesses worry about proposed “opportunity tax” – Roni LeForge  (DIERSEN: What is next?  Will precincts, municipalities, townships/wards, counties, states, and countries charge “opportunity taxes” to live and/or work in their jurisdictions? How will the amount of the tax be determined?  Democrats and RINOs would want members of the following groups to pay much higher taxes: those who are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, draft avoiders, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)

http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/brown-playing-the-trump-card-in-bolingbrook-mayoral-race/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Longtime Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar hosted a big fundraiser for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump last fall at the fancy village-owned golf clubhouse known locally as the “Rog Mahal.”  Barely a month later, residents of the southwest suburban village voted 66 percent for Hillary Clinton to 27 percent for Trump. Will County board member Jackie Traynere, a Democrat, hopes to use that apparent political disconnect between Claar and his constituents to bring an end to his sometimes controversial 30 years in office. Since announcing her intention to run against Claar in the April 4 municipal elections, Traynere has sought to make the race in part a referendum on Claar’s support for the new president. “Trump isn’t the reason Roger should go. It really is his management of the village,” Traynere, 54, told me recently in a phone interview from Leavenworth, Kansas, where she was traveling on business in her role as a union organizer for the American Federation of Government Employees. But she adds: “The Trump support really pushed people over the edge.” Claar, just back from Trump’s inauguration, argued Tuesday that traditional party politics don’t belong in municipal elections and that he will gladly run on the record that has made him one of the longest serving mayors in the Chicago area. “I think people are generally pretty happy with what’s going on in Bolingbrook,” said the 71-year-old Claar, who aggressively steered the village’s growth from a population of about 33,000 when he took over to more than 75,000 today. Indeed, it’s a tricky business to inject national politics into a municipal election. Candidates don’t even run under party labels. And voter turnout is usually only a small fraction of what it is in a presidential election. But the fact is that Bolingbrook, an increasingly diverse community in every sense of the word, has been trending Democratic in statewide and national elections for the past decade. That suggests an opening for a Democrat mounting a serious campaign, and Traynere seems to be doing just that. She has hired a professional campaign manager and claims the endorsements of Sen. Dick Durbin and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle among others. Traynere was just re-elected to her third term on the Will County Board and served last year as a Bernie Sanders delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Claar starts the election season with a campaign fund of more than $500,000, barely half of what he once kept on hand, but says he has what he needs. “This whole thing is about power. They see this as an opportunity to take over. They want to be in charge of Bolingbrook,” said Claar, who vowed that he will not seek endorsements from any Republicans, including Trump. That doesn’t mean Claar is backing down from his support for Trump, whom he describes as a “breath of fresh air” on the political scene. “He called it like it is. That’s kind of the way I operate,” said Claar. Claar operates as a full-time mayor and pays himself commensurately with a salary of $140,102, not including a $6,000 car allowance. He emphasizes that’s less than Bolingbrook paid the village administrator whose job he eliminated. Claar also is collecting two public pensions: $55,757 from his previous life as a school administrator and $4,532 from his tenure on the Illinois Tollway Authority. His total annual taxpayer compensation of $200,000 looms as a potential campaign issue. Claar resigned from the tollway board in 2000 after the Sun-Times reported he was raising campaign funds from tollway vendors. That was just one of many minor scandals that have dogged Claar through the years, but nothing that has turned the voters of Bolingbrook against him. “I have been vetted on numerous occasions over false accusations,” Claar declared. He predicts Traynere’s emphasis on Trump could backfire. I predict it will make for a more interesting than usual municipal election season.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20170124/news/170129496/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A proposal for new digital literacy curriculum and resources has one Elgin school board member concerned about students being indoctrinated. The Elgin Area School District U-46 school board Monday night voted 5-2 to approve curriculum for prekindergarten through 12th grades. One school board member voting against, Jeanette Ward, objected to some of the materials that are part of the digital curriculum. “I will be voting ‘no’ on any curriculum proposal that relies on any text or resource that glorifies communism and denigrates capitalism, deliberately misrepresents Israel’s history and right to live in its own land, presents the pseudoscience of climate change as established scientific fact, or celebrates Planned Parenthood Founder Margaret Sanger as a champion for women when, in fact, she was a racist who believed in eugenics, more specifically in killing as many unborn African-American babies as possible,” Ward said.)

I worked on audits of federal financial industry regulators for almost 9 years, on audits of IRS for 3 years, and on audits of many other federal agencies for almost 6 years. While I worked for GAO, I earned a master’s degree accounting from DePaul; I passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt; I became a licensed CPA; I became a Certified Fraud Examiner, Certified Government Financial Manager, Certified Financial Services Manager, and Forensic Accountant; and I earned a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT.)
http://www.nationalreview.com/article/444148/government-accountability-local-watchdogs-citizen-action-makes-big-difference
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The experience inspired Allen to co-found the Edgar County Watchdogs along with fellow Edgar County resident John Kraft, who was also frustrated with government officials. Since the small-town Illinoisans founded their group, they have forced out 185 public officials in the state, all of whom resigned or chose not to seek reelection. More impressive still, the pair has accomplished all of this without any funding, through the use of FOIA requests, pro se litigation, and comments at public government meetings. Due to their exemplary achievements, Allen and Kraft won the State Policy Network’s 2016 Unsung Hero Award, a cash prize of $25,000 that is sponsored by the Vernon K. Krieble Foundation. The award is part of the foundation’s citizenship program, “Lens of Liberty,” which encourages citizens to defend their rights and freedom.)
