https://www.dailyherald.com/discuss/20190209/editorial-the-danger-of-increased-polarization-in-age-of-digital-news

(FROM THE EDITORIAL: The research, reported in the academic Journal of Communication, found that with fewer opportunities to learn about local politics, citizens have been more apt to apply their national partisanship to local issues. The AP reported that the research found that for the first time in a century in 2016, no state elected a senator from a different party than the one that won its presidential vote. “The voting behavior was more polarized, less likely to include split-ticket voting, if a newspaper had died in the community,” said communications professor Johanna Dunaway of Texas A&M. The local campaigns are just warming up for the April 2 election. Covering them in a suburban area as large as Chicago’s is no easy task. But we’re committed to doing so to the best of our ability. We owe it to you. As citizens, do your part. Get out to the forums to listen to the candidates. Study the issues, not just in the Daily Herald, but wherever you can find the information. We all owe it to the community.)

GAO hired me in 1980 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job. IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job. The Post Office hired me in 1966 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.)
https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikekappel/2019/02/06/4-warning-signs-your-employer-brand-may-be-in-trouble/#4f3afde7722d
(FROM THE ARTICLE: 3. Difficulties Retaining And Recruiting Employees “I am writing to inform you of my resignation from Company XYZ, effective two weeks from today”… Does this sentence sound familiar to you? If so, your employer brand could be taking a turn for the worst. How much you invest in your employer brand is reflected in employee retention. According to one source, employee turnover can be reduced by 28% by investing in employer brand. Take a look at how well your business retains employees. Do you find yourself trying to replace workers each month? Every few weeks? Find out why employees are resigning. Employees may leave for a range of reasons, including low pay, lack of respect, or little reward for hard work. Pinpoint why employee retention has decreased. Fix any issues based on your research to help retain future employees. Your goal should be to have all employees proud and happy to work for your business. Are you finding fewer people responding to your job posts? This likely isn’t a fluke. Struggling to recruit candidates is another sign that your employer brand is in trouble. According to another source, 75% of job seekers consider an employer’s brand before even applying for a job. If it becomes more and more difficult to recruit, take a look at your employer brand. Narrow down why candidates don’t want to apply. Did they read a negative employee review? Have they heard about a bad experience from a current or former employee? Candidates are attracted to appealing employer brands. Create an attractive employer brand that stands out to candidates. Include aspects like benefits, paid time off, and work culture in job descriptions to give your brand a boost.)

— How much further? – Michael J. Bahr, Springfield
https://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20190204/letter-how-much-further
(FROM THE LETTER: How much further will Illinois go to become the “most progressive state” on abortion, as Gov. J.B. Pritzker has declared? The Illinois governor was certainly proud to take the lead as most progressive by funding abortions using taxpayer dollars. Yet Pritzker was quickly overshadowed by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who signed a bill allowing abortions up to nine months and removing other legal protections for the unborn. For this, Cuomo earned thunderous applause from the state’s legislative body, and even New York Cardinal Dolan is afraid to excommunicate Cuomo. Then Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam defended the killing of a child after the child was born that would have been allowed by a bill proposed in his state’s legislature, but then clarified his statement to indicate that he was talking about children who had been born with severe abnormalities or for reasons of the mother’s mental health in the 40th week, as if that makes it acceptable to kill any child that has been born. What will Gov. Pritzker do to maintain IL as the “most progressive state”? Infanticide up to 2 years old, for any reason? Abortion has always been about killing the infants. That should be obvious to all who have been watching these states try to “one-up” each other to become the most progressive. The good people of Illinois must stand up against this evil.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/04/us/politics/northam-fairfax-big-league-politics.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Big League Politics is a relatively new entry to the constellation of right-wing media outlets that sprung up during Donald Trump’s rise, and until the bombshell yearbook report, its readership had remained small. Patrick Howley, the editor in chief, said he received the photograph showing a pair of figures in blackface and Ku Klux Klan robes from a “concerned citizen,” declining to add more details. But one of Big League Politics’s owners, Noel Fritsch, described the source of the photograph as “some people who were classmates of Northam,” who brought it to light out of anger at the governor’s remarks early last week defending late-term abortions. In its mission statement, Big League Politics purports to be “not conservative” and “not liberal,” but it has trafficked in conspiracy theories favored by the far right, like the case of Seth Rich, the Democratic National Committee staff member whose murder in Washington was falsely seized on by conservative commentators as linked to WikiLeaks.)

https://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2019/02/04/lose-with-honor-republicans-have-trashed-the-conservative-brand/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The short answer to your question is the Gillespie campaign was a bunch of Never Trumpers. The Gillespie campaign was a bunch of people who thought that the way for the Republican Party to win was to have a candidate and a support staff who were the exact opposite of Donald Trump. So here’s what I said July 13th, 2017. RUSH ARCHIVE: You think Virginia is the swamp and it’s all Never Trumpers there, and so Gillespie hires a bunch of Never Trumpers, but he barely squeaks by in the primary. Never Trumpers and hiring a bunch of swampsters to run your campaign with a bunch of people that don’t know how to get Republicans who voted for Trump, you’re not gonna win the governorship! RUSH: Right. Now, your question, how in the world can anybody in a decent opposition political research department miss this Northam stuff?)

— ONLY IMMIGRATION CAN STOP THE TRUMP ECONOMY’S MOMENTUM – Roy Beck, President, NumbersUSA
https://dailycaller.com/2019/02/04/beck-economy-momentum/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The last thing those Americans need is for Congress or the president to stop the positive momentum by taking immigration actions that would add competition from millions of new job seekers through increased immigration, more guest workers, weaker enforcement and new amnesties. Some 50 million working-age U.S. residents (aged 18-64) are still not in the labor market at all. Of course, not all of them need a job. But large numbers do. For example, 35 million people under age 65 live in poverty. One of every five Hispanics is impoverished. One of every three working-age black Americans still has no job. . .It is doubtful employers will do the necessary recruiting of those Americans and immigrants already here if the government increases the flow of foreign workers even higher than the current one million new immigrants who are given lifetime work permits each year plus hundreds of thousands of guest workers. How much better it would be if the president could persuade Congress to speed up the momentum of recruiting previously unwanted workers. He can do that by sticking with his campaign promises to help American workers by working with Congress to cut unnecessary, generalized immigration like chain migration and the lottery, and to mandate E-Verify to shut off the jobs magnet that encourages illegal workers to come and stay in the United States. The president should urge Congress to keep the recruitment momentum going.)

FED SMITH
— How Many Millionaires Are in the Thrift Savings Plan? – Ralph R. Smith
https://www.fedsmith.com/2019/02/04/many-millionaires-thrift-savings-plan/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At the end of 2017, there were 23,962 TSP millionaires – an increase of almost 150% from two years before that date. At the end of 2018, with the stock market declining in value in 2018, the number of millionaires in the federal government’s TSP program declined along with the stock market. (The C fund declined 4.41% in 2018.) As of December 31, 2018, there were 21,432 millionaires in the TSP. The average TSP millionaire has been contributing to the plan for almost 30 years (29.63). The TSP participant with the largest account value has accumulated $6,086,238. Keep in mind, if you happen to be one of these rigorous, successful savers, having a TSP account in excess of a million dollars does not translate into having that much money to spend. When the money is withdrawn, there will be taxes due to the federal government and, for some, taxes may also be due at the state government level. Retired employees are required to pay taxes on their TSP withdrawals.)

How have AA, Diversity, and Inclusion impacted you? AA, Diversity, and Inclusion impacted me extremely negatively. While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, because I am Republican, White, male, and non-veteran, my Democrat superiors did everything that they could to not hire me, to not retain me, to not promote me, and to get rid of me. My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

DAILY HERALD
— Naperville representative’s ‘white supremacist’ comments sparking conversation – Marie Wilson (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, Democrats demonize, denigrate, condemn, and promote hatred against Republicans, and especially against Republicans who are White, male, and/or older, as being White supremacists, Nazis, KKK members, haters, racists, sexists, and even worse things who should be gotten rid of. Democrats do not want “spark conversation.” They want to get rid of Republicans.)
https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20190126/naperville-representatives-white-supremacist-comments-sparking-conversation
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Stava-Murray’s comments have drawn demands for apologies from the Lisle and Naperville Township Republican Organizations, as well as calls by Naperville City Council member Kevin Coyne and others for her to be censured. “What I feel most uplifted by since I made those comments, and since the subsequent press coverage, is actually that several groups I’ve heard of have actually been discussing what racism looks like today in Naperville,” she said. “And how do we change it.” Many Naperville leaders, including Mayor Steve Chirico, who has worked to diversify membership on the city’s advisory boards and commissions, say her claims of “white supremacist policies” are far from the truth. “I don’t think it’s a fair characterization,” Chirico said. Some say the criticism of harboring white favoritism doesn’t fit a city becoming known as a hub of Indian-American business and culture. Naperville demographics show the city is 68.3 percent white, 17.9 percent Asian, 5.7 percent Hispanic, 5 percent black and 3.2 percent two or more races, according to the U.S. Census Bureau in July 2018. “If it was that kind of supremacist city,” says Krishna Bansal, chairman of Naperville Indian Community Outreach, a group formed by late Mayor George Pradel in 2013 along with a counterpart for Chinese outreach, “why would people come here?” . . . Chirico said the city follows a nationally standardized process for hiring police officers and maintains a review board specifically to discuss issues such as inherent bias before making decisions. He said he trusts the hiring process as well as police Chief Robert Marshall’s emphasis on diversifying his force. “It would be really, really hard to make a case that our recruitment process or our hiring process is somehow biased,” Chirico said. “It’s just not.” “We flatly deny and oppose any insinuation that Naperville hires police officers who are not appropriately vetted and highly qualified,” read a statement from city hall. . .Chirico said he is not concerned, saying that if it were a problem, those affected would be talking about it. Statistics provided to the Illinois Department of Transportation show white drivers were pulled over during 63 percent of the 13,342 traffic stops conducted in 2017 in Naperville, and minority drivers were involved in the remaining 37 percent of stops. Statewide, police stopped white drivers 58 percent of the time in 2017 and pulled over minority drivers in 42 percent of stops. . .Naperville City Council member Patty Gustin, who sells real estate for Charles Rutenberg Realty, said she is offended by Stava-Murray’s comments, which she says “create fake barriers and drive people away.” “I have not observed Realtors violating fair housing laws,” Gustin said. “To the contrary, we work especially hard to build a diverse community.” . . . District 203 did not immediately provide its rates of student suspension or AP class participation by race. But officials on Friday acknowledged a national trend of disproportionate disciplinary action against black students and said the trend “also holds true in Naperville 203.” To try to address the disparity, the district has implemented policies including placement in alternative schools instead of expulsion and has created a diversity advisory committee. “This is not a new issue for Naperville 203, but we are actively working to address it,” Rakeda Leaks, executive director of diversity and inclusion, said in a written statement. “We are committed to inclusive practices and supporting the educational and emotional needs of all students in the district.”)

— Illinois GOP facing dire financial straits – Rich Miller
https://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/jb-pritzker-campaign-spending-democrats-illinois-republicans-dire-financial-straits/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Democratic Party of Illinois ended the year with about $1.4 million in the bank. The Illinois Republican Party finished with $313,000. The IL GOP is going to have to be frugal for a while until they can raise some dough. Rauner has been the state GOP’s most reliable donor. The former governor contributed $36.9 million to the state party since June 13th of 2014. The party raised another $20 million or so on top of that since that same date, but a large chunk of that money was pass-through cash from the two legislative caucuses for direct mail costs. The unofficial leader of the Republican Party’s wealthy Chicago-area “donor class” was Ron Gidwitz. He helped raise a ton of money for his party over the years. But Gidwitz is now the US Ambassador to Belgium, so he can’t do them any good. Bottom line: The Republican Party in this state is in very dire straits.)

https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511739295-wheaton-bowl-owner-says-he-was-targeted-by-council-candidate-bray-parker
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sal Falbo thinks Erica Bray-Parker could use a new lesson plan. “I don’t think her actions were the right thing to be teaching her students,” Falbo told the DuPage Policy Journal as rumors of Bray-Parker’s attempting to bully him and other business owners in Wheaton into removing signs from their properties that were for political candidates she doesn’t agree with continue to swirl. “We all have a right to freedom of speech, and as a teacher you would think she would know and understand that,” he added. According to local business owner Jane Shaw, all the drama began when Bray-Parker, who teaches at Glenbard North and is an instructor at the Civics Club, penned a letter to Falbo and other local business owners demanding that they remove posters of former state Rep. Jeanne Ives, a Republican of Wheaton, from in front of their businesses, vowing never to return to their establishments if they failed to comply. Bray-Parker, who is running for Wheaton City Council in District 4, is also accused of using her students as part of her “bullying” campaign, Shaw added. “I don’t live in Wheaton but if I did there’s no way I would vote for her,” said Faldo, part owner of Wheaton Bowl. “She’s obviously an activist, but part of the responsibility in that is understanding that everyone has the same free speech rights that you do. On top of that, the signs she was complaining about weren’t even on my property; they were in front. She’s really made an issue out of a nonissue.” Meanwhile, Ives, who relinquished her seat in Springfield with the start of the legislative session, has been adamant in expressing her opinion that she doesn’t think what she calls Bray-Parker’s brand of politics is right for Wheaton. “Erica Bray-Parker should not be elected; make sure she isn’t,” she told the DuPage Policy Journal. “She is unfit to represent business owners and the respectful, hard-working taxpayers of Wheaton. She is a civics teacher who is not civil.” Bray-Parker also raised eyebrows in May 2018, when she penned a letter in the Daily Herald assailing Peter Breen, a Republican of Lombard who was a state representative at the time, over what she perceived to be his inadequate stance on the issue of gun control.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— McGlasson discouraged by lack of response to meeting request – W.J. Kennedy (DIERSEN: What do the following have to say about this: your Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain, the officers of your Republican township, ward, and/or county party organizations, your representative on the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee, the IRP officers, the IRP National Committeeman, and the IRP National Committeewoman?)
https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511740588-mcglasson-discouraged-by-lack-of-response-to-meeting-request
(FROM THE ARTICLE: All that Republican Committeeman John McGlasson says he is likely to get out of his call for a special meeting of the state GOP after the shellacking the party took in November is a chance to speak his mind at the party’s regularly scheduled meeting on Feb. 9 in Bolingbrook. If he can make his way onto the agenda. “Never heard back from anyone,” McGlasson, referring to his request for a special meeting, told Prairie State Wire. “I’m completely discouraged. I’ll try to give my viewpoints at the regular party meeting, if I get a chance.” The conservative McGlasson, committeeman from the 16th Congressional District, seconded fellow Committeeman’s Sean Morrison’s call for a special meeting after the embarrassing revelation in mid-December that Bruce Rauner sought someone to take his place on the ballot soon after his near loss to former State Rep. Jeanne Ives, a Republican of Wheaton, in the March primary. Again, he heard nothing. “We should be out looking hard for someone to challenge (U.S. Senator Dick) Durbin in 2020,” he said. “A good, enthusiastic candidate will help other candidates in down-ticket races. Maybe we could take a few of the House seats back. But they seem to be content with the way things are.” McGlasson needs five of the 18 Republican Central Committee members to call a special meeting of the party. He says with Bob Winchester’s legal claim for his Committee spot in the 15th Congressional District still in legal limbo, he doesn’t have them. “It is my opinion that the party needs to return to its roots as expressed in our party platform,” he said. “And we need to search for a leader that will lead us back to the basics of conservatism.” McGlasson said that a move is on to have Ives speak in Bolingbrook, but she told the Prairie State Wire that she has yet to receive an invitation. “I would tell them that they are disorganized and rudderless,” Ives said. “We need a fiscal contract with Illinoisans and a strategy to carry it out.” “We need new leadership,” she added, “after that bloodbath in November, and (the) revelation about Rauner. They (party leaders) can’t claim ignorance about that. He’s been funding the party for years.”)
