— Blue wave drenches DuPage County, aiding Democratic transformation of one-time Republican stronghold. But will it last? – JOHN KEILMAN (DIERSEN: The Chicago Tribune has played a major role in the Democrat invasion of DuPage County. I should write a book about the Democrat invasion of DuPage County. I would focus on hypocritical hate-filled Republican-hating Republican-haters who have moved into DuPage County to hypocritically take advantage of the prosperity and safety that Republicans created there. I would focus on RINO leaders of Republican organizations in DuPage County who have dumped conservatives, that is, who have dumped Republicans, and pandered to moderates and to liberals, that is, who have pandered to Democrats. I have lived in DuPage County, Milton Township, and Wheaton since 1978 and in my precinct since 1984. I have been a Republican Precinct Committeeman since 1999. I served as the chairman of the DuPage County based TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois 2005-2012. I served as the Milton Township Republican Organization webmaster 2008-2010 and 2000-2004. I served as a Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member 2003-2011.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The electoral blue wave predicted by political scientists might have fizzled in much of the U.S., but on Tuesday it drenched a corner of the Chicago area that, not long ago, was practically untouched by Democrats. DuPage County, once known as one of the most solidly Republican areas in the country, appears to have given Democrats control of the County Board for the first time since the 1930s. Two more Democrats are leading their races for countywide office, and could be joined by another when the final votes are tallied. DuPage voters also backed Democrats in every federal race from president to U.S. representative, as well as every state senator and nine of 13 state representatives. It’s a stunning turn of fortune two decades in the making, observers say, the result of shifting demographics, shrewd campaigning and the divisive reign of President Donald Trump. “He doesn’t do well with suburban women and I think that hurts us,” said Jim Zay, a County Board member and chairman of DuPage County Republicans. “It’s time to rebrand and regroup and come back in two years.” Many of the county’s races ended on a paper-thin margin — nine were within a percentage point or two as of Friday afternoon — so it could be contested territory for years to come. But College of DuPage political science professor Melissa Mouritsen, who has written about the county’s transformation, said it’s following a path already traveled by other American suburbs. “DuPage is purple; it’s not fully Democratic yet,” she said. “But it’s at that tipping point.” A history in red  For more than a century DuPage County was as Republican as could be, home to GOP stalwarts such as U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde, who led the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, Pate Philip, president of the Illinois Senate for a decade, and two-time Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan. As recently as 2000, the election of a single Democrat to the County Board was cause for a wonder-struck story in the Tribune. But Mouritsen said the changes that would result in the county’s political realignment were already underway. One was demographic: The county went from 79% white in 2000 to 66% now, and median household income, expressed in 2018 dollars, dropped from $99,000 to $88,000. As the population diversified by race, income and political ideology — many newcomers hailed from the Democratic power center of Cook County, Mouritsen said — a growing number of people proved amenable to the Democrats. The redrawing of political districts after the 2010 census, a process controlled by House Speaker Michael Madigan, also helped to elevate Democrats to national and state offices, she said. County offices, however, remained thoroughly red. Liz Chaplin, who was first elected to the DuPage board with two other Democrats in 2012, was by 2016 the last of her party on the 18-member panel. “Sometimes I just felt like I was hitting my head against the wall,” she said. “It’s hard when you’re the only one.” Then came Donald Trump. He was the favorite among the county’s Republican primary voters in 2016, but the DuPage electorate as a whole rejected him, giving him only 39% of the vote in the general election, the lowest GOP share in decades. Two years into Trump’s tumultuous administration, the county’s moderate Republicans were open to hearing a new message, said Cynthia Borbas, chair of the DuPage Democrats. “Previously they were like, ‘Oh, Democrats? We don’t even want to talk to you,’” she said. “But because of Trump, more people are paying attention and they’re willing to have more conversations with us. And we’re connecting on the values and issues we care about.” Trickle to a flood In the 2018 election, DuPage voters elected Jean Kaczmarek as county clerk, making her the first Democrat to hold countywide office in 84 years. They also added six Democrats to the County Board. Jamie Wood, who moved to Lisle from Detroit two years ago, said he votes Democratic all the way down the ballot, even for candidates whose names and policy stances are unfamiliar. “My mindset right now is to just have as much of a blue wave as I possibly can just because of how much I’m fed up with the status quo,” he said. Wood, 33, who grew up in Elgin, is familiar with DuPage’s political history, but said young families like his are replacing older residents who were reliably Republican. These new families, he said, consider schools their top priority and aren’t as focused on traditional GOP concerns such as public safety. State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, who ran unopposed, emphasized law and order in a letter he sent in his role as Republican committeeman to Democratic households in his precinct. He wrote that county GOP officials from coroner to auditor “stand for one thing: the importance of public safety and adherence to the rule of law.” Two of those candidates, aspiring recorder Babette Holder Youngberg and incumbent Circuit Court Clerk Chris Kachiroubas, were trailing their Democratic opponents Friday afternoon with thousands of votes left to be counted. Auditor Bob Grogan led his Democratic rival by just 676 votes. But Berlin noted that a referendum asking whether the county should keep law enforcement as its top funding priority was approved by a 3-to-1 margin, suggesting the message was still potent. He said he didn’t know why Republicans stumbled in DuPage, but added that it happened in many other suburbs across the country. “We’re not unique in that regard,” he said. Purple future? Amy Chavez, a Naperville Democrat who won election to the County Board, said her constituents are chiefly concerned about COVID-19 — “When they think safe, they want to be safe from the virus” — and that the new Democratic majority will ensure the health department has what it needs to conduct testing and contact tracing. Paula Deacon Garcia, of Lisle, who was leading her race for a board seat Friday, said her issues are climate change, sustainability and public health, along with lowering the temperature at public meetings. “Since I’ve been attending, they’ve become quite partisan,” she said. “I’m looking for a bipartisan approach.” Republican board Chairman Dan Cronin could not be reached for comment. Zay was hopeful a return to form might not be far away for DuPage Republicans. The GOP needs to do a better job claiming credit for making DuPage an appealing place to live, he said, and must bring more women and young people into the fold. He noted that every seat on the County Board will be up for election in two years. Trump won’t be on that ballot, but another polarizing figure likely will: Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker, whose shutdown orders during the pandemic have angered plenty of suburbanites. Borbas, meanwhile, said the county’s Democrats aren’t taking anything for granted. They fought Republicans for every vote in the 2020 election and are ready to do it again, she said. “I don’t think it’s a fluke, I don’t think it’s a one-off, I don’t think DuPage is blue,” she said. “But I think what it means is that we’re in the game now and we’re here to stay.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: $1 million is no longer enough to retire on You have to get rich these days just to finance a comfortable retirement. That’s the conclusion financial advisors are increasingly coming around to, as they gauge the direction of the economy in a strange new world of glacial growth and super-low interest rates. “Twenty years ago, someone with a million bucks would have said, ‘that’s great, I can draw down $100,000 a year, I’ll be just fine,’” Jim McCaughan, CEO of Principal Global Investors, tells me in the video above. “But now, with very low rates, the problem of funding a retirement is much more difficult.” Retirees don’t need to be told that low rates have cut sharply into the returns on fixed-income investments. But they may need to rethink how to prepare for what might happen in the future. Many investors are waiting for interest rates to go back up, once the Federal Reserve starts hiking short-term rates later this year or early next year. Meanwhile, the Fed is gradually winding down its vast “quantitative easing” program, which deliberately forced down long-term rates. So as that pressure eases, rates ought to go back up. Right? Maybe not. McCaughan argues that we’ll be in a low-rate environment for much longer than many people expect, for a couple of basic reasons. First, an aging population means the demand for low-risk bonds will rise, pushing up prices but pulling down yields. Second, there’s been a growing gap between global demand and global production capacity, which will keep a lid on prices of most things for the foreseeable future. Low inflation usually coincides with low-interest rates. There’s nothing magical (or scientific) about $1 million as a goal for retirement savings. As a round benchmark, however, it’s been in the ballpark for a couple hoping to retire comfortably. A $1 million principal will generate $60,000 per year in income if the portfolio’s return is 6%, and $40,000 per year at 4%. The amount you need to live on, of course, depends on many factors, including the cost of living where you reside, healthcare expenses, how much you travel and how long you live. But if rates remain in the low range they’re in now—with 10-year Treasury rates well below 3%, say—it will change the math of retirement planning. During most of the baby boomers’ working lives, it was reasonable to expect annual returns of 6% to 10% on a retirement portfolio, without taking much risk. Add Social Security and other pension payments, and a $1 million nest egg was more than adequate for most people.)

— Political fundraiser in Park Ridge draws backlash after pictures show lack of masks – Dana Rebik
https://wgntv.com/news/coronavirus/political-fundraiser-in-park-ridge-draws-backlash-after-pictures-show-lack-of-masks/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The group sent the following statement Monday. “The Republican Women of Park Ridge is extremely proud of the successful, informative, and safe breakfast held this past weekend at the Park Ridge Country Club. The breakfast was conducted in compliance with the strict rules imposed by our host, which did a very good job of adhering to the guidelines issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health. All tables and chairs were spaced appropriately throughout the rooms that were used. Additionally, the Republican Women of Park Ridge took active steps to ensure the safety of its attendees including providing free masks and hand sanitizers to attendees upon arrival and requiring that all attendees wear masks and social distance. All attendees removed their masks to eat. After sitting down and starting to eat, attendees were asked to stand to recite the pledge of allegiance, and some did not put on their masks as they recited the pledge. Some individuals removed their masks momentarily after the event when taking a photo. The very limited times when attendees were not wearing masks were warranted and reasonable. Unfortunately, there are people in our community who do not genuinely care about the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 but take an opportunity such as this to harass our organization. We are not surprised by this and will continue to promote our message of freedom, family values, and patriotism to ensure a healthy, equitable, prosperous and free America.” Illinois Republican National Committeeman Richard Porter said he spoke at the breakfast and sent the following statement. “I attended and spoke at the Republican Women of Park Ridge event. Every person I saw wore a mask when entering until they sat down to eat, at which point people removed their masks. I wore a mask the entire time, other than when sitting to eat, during the pledge and when I spoke — from a podium that was well more than 6 feet away from others. That a Democrat mayor threatens the establishment that hosted this nice little lunch, and that some in the news media are spun up about a lunch these women worked hard to make compliant, tells you much about the mayor’s and the media’s character and partisanship.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Underlying health conditions and health issues, such as diabetes and obesity, also have a significant impact on how severe a case of COVID-19 might be. The CDC warned earlier this year that anyone considered ‘severely obese’ may raise risk of a severe reaction to COVID-19. Following his annual physical this year, Trump’s physician Dr. Sean Conley said Trump was 6 feet, 3 inches tall and 244 pounds. Trump, who was 73 at the time, had gained one pound since his last examination in 2019. It also showed the president’s cholesterol level had slightly improved to 167 from 196 the year before. Officially, Trump’s height and weight would equate to a body mass index (BMI) of 30.4 – a fraction over the 30.0 level to be considered obese in the lowest of three tiers. His previous doctor, Ronny Jackson, said in 2018 that Trump’s ‘overall health is excellent [but] … he would benefit from a diet that is lower in fat and carbohydrates and from a routine exercise regimen.’ Trump, the oldest president to ever take office, doesn’t drink alcohol or smoke. However, he is known to enjoy fast food, steaks and ice cream, while golfing is his primary source of exercise.)

DUPAGE COUNTY ELECTION DIVISION
— DuPage County Early Voting off to great start – Hundreds vote in person on first day
https://www.dupageco.org/Election/Election_Commission_News/2020/63514/
(FROM THE PRESS RELEASE: The first day of Early Voting in DuPage County has gone smoothly, with hundreds of voters – some of whom lined up outside the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton before dawn – having cast their ballots by mid-afternoon. “We’re quite happy with how it’s gone today,” DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek said. “Though the line of voters snaked through the Fairgrounds parking lot today, people were patient, they practiced social distancing, and everyone – voters, pollworkers, and my staff – worked together to make this first day run smoothly.” At 8 a.m. the doors to the polling place at the Fairgrounds were opened and Kaczmarek announced, “the polls are open!” At the close of the day, 660 voters had exercised their right to vote at the Fairgrounds. The site is open 8 a.m. thru 4:30 p.m. weekdays through Oct. 16, and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 17. Hours, as well as the number of Early Voting sites, expand on Oct. 19, when 18 sites all over the county will open to voters offering touchscreen voting. The current Fairgrounds site will offer paper ballots through Nov. 2. Plenty of PPE, including hand sanitizer, masks, and latex gloves, were available for voters. A professional cleaning crew wiped down surfaces throughout the day at the Fairgrounds voting site. “It’s great to see such enthusiasm by voters on the first day,” Kaczmarek said, “but we still have 39 days until Nov. 3, and you can vote on any of those days, either in-person or in the comfort of your home by mail ballot.” Thursday was also the day the Clerk’s Office began sending mail ballots to voters. Those ballots should start showing up in mailboxes of voters who’ve requested them soon. “If you’ve applied for a mail ballot, there’s no need to vote in person,” Kaczmarek said. “More than 159,000 DuPage County voters have already requested mail ballots, and my office will make sure each of those voters gets their ballot. Voters still have just over four weeks to request a mail ballot, but we recommend that if you plan to vote by mail, you apply for your ballot online as soon as possible. “This election may feel very different from any previous election – from the masks and plastic shields at the polling places to the disinformation coming from many quarters, but voting is still the same,” Kaczmarek said. “There are three ways to vote – by mail, in-person before Election Day, and in-person on Election Day. I urge voters to make the choice that is easiest and safest for them.”)

Ever-increasingly, Democrat candidates hint/imply/argue/shout that if elected, that will use government to take income, assets, and opportunities away from Republicans and give that income and those assets and opportunities to African-Americans.)

— How Long Should I Delay My Retirement? – Kailey Hagen (DIERSEN: Until August of 1997, when I was 48 years old, my Democrat GAO superiors falsely led me to believe that they were going to let me work until I would be eligible for regular retirement in 2003. Their success in forcing me to take their early retirement “officer” on September 30, 1997 has cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars. In today’s dollars, my Civil Service Retirement System pension is only 41% of what my GAO salary was in 1997.)

THE HILL
— Journalism or partisanship? The media’s mistakes of 2016 continue in 2020 – SHARYL ATTKISSON (DIERSEN: What do you say to journalists who claim to be nonpartisan, but who serve as propagandists for the Democrat Party, Libertarian Party, and/or Green Party?)
https://thehill.com/opinion/white-house/516036-journalism-or-partisanship-the-medias-mistakes-of-2016-continue-in-2020
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If there were any doubt left after 2016 as to what too much of the mainstream news media in America has become, it most certainly has been erased in 2020. Too often, many in my industry have revealed themselves as little more than propaganda tools for dueling political sides, no longer reporting the way journalists once did. We compete for the latest anonymous “scoop,” scandalous rumor or unsupported accusation. We pounce on the supposed “bombshell” du jour and hype it on the news, accompanied by endless round robins with political operatives. Many of us don’t even bother to find and report on stories that powerful people and interests aren’t pushing. To do this, too many of us have abandoned basic tenets of journalism. We ignore the suspicious timing of the handout “leaks” or scandals — as if nobody notices. We fail to explore or disclose sources’ motivations or conflicts of interest — as if nobody wonders about them. We don’t even pretend to assess the true news value of the “bombshell.” We’re simply happy to be of service to the propagandists; we invite them to use us, and our superiors reward us with admiration. Many of our peers either repeat the reporting, seek to confirm it using equally dubious methods or discredit it. Rarely do we step back and consider that the whole drama is being orchestrated by political puppet masters who count their successes by the number of news stories they generate.)
