http://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/jeannie-ives-run-for-governor-against-rauner-449912963.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Jeanne Ives has not ruled out a run for governor and is even being urged to challenge Gov. Bruce Rauner in the upcoming Republican primary. Conservatives have voiced disappointment with Rauner’s record, particularly his recent signing of House Bill 40, an abortion funding and access measure. Ives told NBC 5 she’s “exploring the option by having important conversations with folks around the state” about “challenging the unprincipled and morally bankrupt politicians who have failed to deliver reforms demanded by taxpayers, business and ordinary citizens that have played by the rules and yet, find themselves ignored by leader in both parties.” For now, Ives has not begun circulating petitions for governor, but other conservative members of the Illinois GOP are hoping she will, saying Rauner “has major problems with the base.” Other policies that more conservative members of the party have disagreed with include Rauner’s signing of a bill to effectively turn Illinois into a sanctuary state for undocumented immigrants, as well as a landmark rewrite of the state’s school funding formula. GOP mega donor Dick Uhlein has supported Ives in previous races, and is among those that the Wheaton lawmaker would likely court if she decides to move forward with a statewide run. “This is the people’s seat, not the financiers – even as I recognize that campaigns take financial support. I am fortunate to have had his support before and would hope to gain his and many others’ support in any future race I decide to get involved in – state rep. or otherwise,” Ives said. A West Point graduate, Ives has served in the Illinois House for five years.)

http://chicagotonight.wttw.com/2017/10/07/rep-jeanne-ives-inching-closer-run-governor
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, despite buckets of campaign cash, may be in for a primary fight in his 2018 re-election battle for governor. Suburban Republican lawmaker Jeanne Ives (Wheaton) is considering getting in the race, citing her frustration with the governor’s signing of HB40, a law that will increase access to abortion for state Medicaid recipients and would continue to make abortion legal in Illinois should the U.S. Supreme Court choose to overturn it. “Our team is having important conversations around the state about challenging the unprincipled and morally bankrupt politicians who have failed to deliver reforms demanded by taxpayers, businesses and ordinary citizens that have played by the rules and yet, find themselves ignored by both parties,” Ives said. Rauner is facing a revolt from the grassroots of his party, with several Republican lawmakers saying they can’t support him for re-election and are actively looking for an alternative. Former ally John Tillman, head of the libertarian think tank The Illinois Policy Institute, referred to him as “Benedict Rauner” for allegedly “going back on his word” and signing HB40. Ives would appear to be at a significant financial disadvantage, but could level the playing field if she garners the support of political operatives like Dan Proft and uber-funder Dick Uihlein. Last week, Ives told Chicago Tonight she had received numerous calls from people who want her to run. “Absolutely we need to find an alternative to Gov. Rauner. We need to challenge him if he decides to run again,” she said at the time. Ives says she will be speaking at an event in the Rock Island area on Monday.)

SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
— Rift in the Republican Party? – Doug Finke  (DIERSEN: Harris glorifies and praises himself and others who reject planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform.)
http://www.sj-r.com/news/20171007/statehouse-insider-rift-in-republican-party
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With the fallout continuing over Gov. BRUCE RAUNER’s decision to sign the abortion rights bill into law, questions are being raised about whether a significant rift is developing in the state Republican Party. In the immediate aftermath of the bill signing, several Republican lawmakers said they can no longer support Rauner. Since the legislature currently isn’t in session, we have yet to see how that will translate when it comes time to actually vote on something the governor wants — or doesn’t want — to pass. Then there was the announcement last week by Rep. DAVID HARRIS, R-Arlington Heights, that he would not run for re-election. Harris was one of the handful of House Republicans who voted for the final tax and spending package. He gave an impassioned speech as the House was preparing to override Rauner’s veto of the deal in which he said he didn’t get elected to preside over the financial ruin of the state. His vote, though, drew the ire of anti-tax Republicans and also drew himself a primary opponent. In announcing his decision not to run again, Harris told media outlets the Republican Party is at war with itself. He told public radio that he did not see how the infighting would make the party stronger. Rauner was asked about all of that during an appearance in Chicago last week. “We have many passionate members of the Republican Party,” Rauner said. “Not everybody is going to agree on every issue. We can have reasonable disagreements. Reasonable people can reasonably disagree.” He ticked off issues that Republicans can find common ground on, such as lower taxes, more economic growth, less regulations, more efficient government and political reform like term limits. He said “no group is defined by any one issue.” That’s no doubt the case, but we’ll see if the abortion issue — and Rauner’s position on it — is the dominant one as things move forward.)
— In 2016, Springfield dined out a lot, bought less stuff – Tim Landis  (DIERSEN: What is the main reason why you spent less money in 2016? I would have had at least $72,135 more to spend in 2016 if my Democrat superiors had not wasted my career and forced me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old. My GS-13 Step 10 salary back then was $122,991 in today’s dollars, but my Civil Service Retirement System pension is only $50,856, or $72,135 less.)
http://www.sj-r.com/news/20171007/analysis-in-2016-springfield-dined-out-lot-bought-less-stuff
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Blame the state budget, online competition or both, but traditional sales tax collections in Springfield continue to fall behind rapid changes in shopping habits. Local consumers spent more on automobiles, groceries and dining out in 2016, according to a just-completed retail market analysis by The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, while they cut back in areas such as general merchandise, household goods and agricultural products. The annual chamber report showed overall retail sales of $2.682 billion, down 1.3 percent from 2015 to the lowest level in three years. But trends varied across 10 spending categories from 2015 to 2016. A more than 18 percent increase in food sales, including supermarkets, pushed spending in the category over $200 million for the first time since the reports started in 2006. The largest declines were for general merchandise, down 12.6 percent, and agricultural equipment and products, down 7.7 percent.)

CHAMPAIGN/URBANA NEWS GAZETTE
— Rauner’s unforced error – Editorial
http://www.news-gazette.com/opinion/editorials/2017-10-08/rauners-unforced-error.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner unleashed a political firestorm within his own party by signing controversial abortion legislation into law. The merits of the abortion issue aside — more on that later — it’s patently clear that Gov. Bruce Rauner made a political mess for himself when he signed a new law that provides for taxpayer-funded abortions in Illinois. He double-crossed Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich, to whom he promised a veto, alienated Republican legislators he has demanded loyalty from and outraged single-issue abortion opponents who now consider him an unreliable and, probably, an immoral turncoat. What, politically, did Rauner gain from signing the bill? Nothing. Abortion-rights proponents perceive decisions like the one the governor made as the minimum they are due. They are angry that Rauner waited as long as he did to announce his support for the measure. So Rauner won himself no friends among Democrats and abortion-rights groups; they have at least 100 other reasons to dislike his brand of governance. In one respect, of course, Rauner’s decision vindicates the self-description he provided voters when running in 2014. Rauner said he wasn’t a politician, something he considered a bad thing, but a businessman who knew how to identify and solve problems, something he suggested Illinois desperately needed. Well, it’s abundantly clear that he’s not a politician. The best of politicians are able to read the tea leaves, weigh costs and benefits, and reach conclusions on dual policy and political questions that are not self-destructive. Rauner did the opposite when he signed the abortion legislation. There’s no doubt Democrats intentionally put him in a trick bag when they passed this cynical measure. That’s what members of one party often do to members of the other party — present them with no-win choices sure to raise vigorous criticism. But just because Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan handed Rauner a gun, it didn’t mean the governor had to shoot his own foot. That’s where the substance of this legislation comes into play. People want to cast House Bill 40 as either pro- or anti-abortion. But abortion is legal and has been since the U.S. Supreme Court issued its 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, a constitutionally guaranteed right that abortion opponents, no matter how hard they try, cannot abridge. Despite that, abortion-rights proponents have steadily and dishonestly warned since 1973 that Roe is on the verge of being overturned, something that has not happened and remains unlikely to happen. H.B. 40 does two things. It would keep abortion legal if Roe were someday overturned. How ironic it is that our legislators busy themselves passing legislation addressing issues that are not, and may never be, problems while they studiously avoid addressing existing problems that are crippling the state? That provision is essentially meaningless because, in the unlikely event Roe is overturned, the issue would return to the individual states for a legislative solution. Does anyone really think that Illinois legislators wouldn’t rush to reinstate legal abortion? Democrats control Illinois, and few if any of them are willing to challenge the party’s abortion-rights litmus test. The second measure, one much more obnoxious to rank-and-file citizens, is the new mandate that provides taxpayer-funded abortions for individuals covered by state-employee health insurance or those on the Medicaid welfare program. Given the disgraceful fact that one in four Illinois residents is on Medicaid, it’s a virtual certainty that many thousands more abortions will be performed — all at taxpayer expense. Despite what abortion-rights proponents want to acknowledge, there are deep moral questions involved here. To compel all taxpayers — especially those with legitimate and sincere antipathy about the medical procedures that terminate lives of unborn children — to finance abortions is a real slap in the face. On that question alone, Rauner would have been on solid ground to explain — in a persuasive and principled way — why it would be a mistake to press financial responsibility for funding abortions on the public at large. There is no question that Rauner is, for understandable reasons, a flawed chief executive, a duck out of water. It’s not clear whether he’s hard-headed and impulsive, the recipient of bad advice or someone who ignores good advice. But he makes unforced errors, and signing this legislation is one of them. That said, he’s one of the few powerful politicians in Illinois who recognizes the extent to which the state is failing and offers real solutions to restore the state’s weak economy, improve our dire financial standing, eliminate the self-dealing and outright corruption in government and smash a discredited political status quo that is driving productive people from the state. Unfortunately, he made his job that much harder going forward and his retention of the job in 2018 even more problematic with his inept and inconsistent handling of an issue that was, on the merits, much less a Hobson’s choice than he perceived it to be.)

PUBLIUS FORUM
— My Home and Car Vandalized Because I’m a Conservative Writer – Warner Todd Huston  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, anti-Trumps promote hatred of individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries that are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
http://www.publiusforum.com/2017/10/07/home-car-vandalized-im-conservative-writer/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Naturally, as a conservative writer I write on subjects such as Islam and immigration that would goad a liberal to call me such a name. I also have frequently had political yard signs in my yard for the more conservative candidates in my area. S, my home is well known (or at least easily known) as a place where a conservative Republican lives. As to my writing, I’ve never tried to hide where I live nor written under kitschy Internet names. I have always written under my full name, so it probably isn’t too hard for someone to find me if they are serious enough about doing so. At this point, with those two bits of graffiti I began to wonder, is someone was targeting me because of what I do for a living? So, I made a second police report after the garage door incident. Thus far none of these incidents were really too major but they did show signs of coming faster and picking up in severity. I have no troubles with my immediate neighbors. In fact, our neighbors across the street had been on an extended visit to Mexico for the last several months and the neighbors right behind us just moved in and weren’t even here for much of this vandalism. The other neighbors are two elderly neighbors and a middle eastern family I haven’t even really met. I have had no cross words with any of them. But last night it went into high gear. At about 1 AM or so on Saturday morning, I was awakened by a noise outside my home. I can’t really say what the noise was as it woke me from a deep sleep. It was just a shout that awoke me. I looked at my window and saw what struck me as a strange light outside. So, I went to the front door… And saw my car interior on fire… (PICTURE) The surface of my passenger seat was set aflame and the entire interior of the car destroyed. Fortunately it isn’t a new car (it’s a 1999 Oldsmobile 88). But unfortunately, because it is so old I took off the comprehensive coverage and only have liability. So, insurance won’t cover this destruction and I am now without a car. Naturally the police became involved, but they say they won’t classify it as arson because they don’t have any evidence to show for it. A plastic pop bottle was left inside by who ever did this. It smelled of gas to me. Police wondered if I smoked in the car. I don’t smoke cigarettes and only occasionally smoke a cigar but NEVER in a car. If you’ve ever smoked a cigar you know that doing so in a car is a messy, ashy endeavor. I don’t do it. So, there is nothing that should have set my car on fire  7 hours after I last drove it. Also, it was the surface of the seats that went up in flames. Nothing electrical any where near the burn zone. I firmly believe that this is an attack on me because of my writing. This is the tolerant left in action. They are trying to intimidate me. I will not be silenced.)

Since 2004, those emails have gone out each and every morning.  Since 2015, they have gone out each and every evening. Since 2004, they have contained links to more than 283,700 articles and information on many upcoming events. To put those emails together and send them out, I give to others a) 10+ hours of my time each and every day, b) 70+ hours of my time each and every week, c) 300+ hours of my time each and every month, d) 3,650+ hours of my time each and every year, and e) 36,500+ hours of my time each and every decade.)

— DECOLONIZE, ABOLISH & BEND A KNEE  Decoding the resistance. – Dawn Perlmutter
http://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/268025/decolonize-abolish-bend-knee-dawn-perlmutter
(FROM THE ARTICLE: NFL Football players are bending a knee in protest during the National Anthem for the same reason that cities across the country are abolishing Columbus Day and for the same reason that there are widespread attacks on Confederate monuments, Columbus statues, fallen officer memorials and veterans’ monuments. Symbols of American history and heroism have been methodically transformed into symbols of oppression, genocide and racism, not that the football players understand this. They are just the latest group of useful idiots being manipulated by a long-established resistance movement. Current American resistance movements and their armies of anarchist protesters thoroughly understand the subversive significance of these iconoclastic acts. The abolition of national holidays, the destruction of historic statues, the desecration of heroes’ memorials and publicly disrespecting traditional civic rituals are time tested revolutionary strategies. Bending a knee is just another gesture in the plan to fundamentally transform America’s past and future. The American resistance movement existed long before Trump became president. It is comprised of many surprisingly unrelated national and global organizations from communists to environmentalists to black nationalists. Identity is their philosophy; decolonization is their doctrine; victimhood is their strategy; grievance is their industry; protest is their tactic; and revolution is their goal.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In Mexico, the government accounted for 38 percent of the spending on TV advertising in 2016, and more than 16 percent of radio advertising, leaving many media companies highly dependent on official money. Advertisements in the nation’s media paid for by federal, state and local authorities totaled about $2 billion from 2013 to 2016, the first three full years of Mr. Peña Nieto’s administration, according to data provided by the government. This money, say critics, is one of the most severe restrictions on the media’s freedom of expression here, often subjecting reporters and editors to government influence, with overtly critical journalists fired, negative stories censored and investigative reporting thwarted. “The ties between government and media is like diabetes: It’s a disease that stops you from leading a normal life,” Mr. Curzio added. “It generates such an alarming feeling that that this is how the establishment works.”)

Ever-increasingly, candidates who have cast Republican primary ballots make it clear to everyone that they are really RINOs, Democrats, Libertarians, or Greens. Most commonly they reject the traditional family, right to life, immigration, illegal drugs, and equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks in the Republican Party platform and the Illinois Republican Party platform. Most commonly, they reject the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) resolution against video gambling.  Most commonly, they focus on getting rid of Republicans like me who support the aforesaid planks and resolution. They stress that I am no longer a TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, MTRCC webmaster, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member, GAO employee, etc.)
https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/tennessee/articles/2017-10-07/tennessee-gop-tightens-rules-for-who-can-run-as-republican
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the little-noticed change to party bylaws approved this summer, candidates must now have voted in three out of the last four GOP state or federal level primaries to be considered bona fide Republican candidates. For candidates seeking to appear on next year’s ballot that will mean voting histories can be scrutinized going back to the August 2012 primary. The previous standard was for candidates to have voted in two of the last four GOP primaries. Exceptions in the new rules will be made for candidates not old enough to have voted in the last four primaries, moved from another state or had an illness or military service that prevented them from voting. A letter from established Republicans to vouch for GOP newcomers could override the primary voting requirement, at the chairman’s discretion. Challenging a candidate’s bona fide status requires a complaint from two Republican voters. But in another change, those complaints must be made from the same district the candidate is running in to avoid activists from trying to interfere with races outside their home areas. Golden, who will have the final say over all challenges, said he expects successful efforts to oust candidates to be rare.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Rep. Jeanne Ives attacks Rauner’s weak right flank – John Kass
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/kass/ct-met-illinois-governor-kass-1008-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton, a conservative and a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, may soon challenge a weakened Gov. Bruce Rauner in the Republican primary. “I’m seriously considering the option, with a serious game plan, we’re meeting with people and we’ll make a decision one way or another soon, and I mean very soon,” Ives told me Friday. She’s considering it because Rauner has lost his base. And what happens when an incumbent loses his or her base? You can smell the toast a’burnin’. “Voters don’t know what Rauner’s core principles are because he doesn’t have any. So we can’t very well give him a pass,” said Ives, a staunch social and fiscal conservative. “I’m not connected to the big money men who run the big races, but whoever would take Rauner on, it would cost less to defeat him than it would for him to redeem his reputation.” Rauner lost the conservative Republican base in Illinois by moving hard to the left, first by signing “sanctuary state” legislation and then by putting taxpayers on the hook to pay for abortion on demand. On Friday, he axed one of his few remaining conservative aides, chief of staff Kristina Rasmussen. Rauner supporters think his moves help him in Cook County, particularly with pro-abortion-rights suburban women. But will Rauner’s support of “sanctuary state” legislation win him Latino support in a general election? Will his decision to risk his career by supporting taxpayer-funded abortion win him love from Democrats? I don’t think so. Yet such moves do satisfy the media, that which will sing his praises and call him courageous and so on, and vilify or at least marginalize any conservative challenger, whether that is Ives or someone else. That’s how things are wired in Illinois, but you knew that. Ultimately, those singing his praises for his leftward drift will abandon Rauner in the general election in favor of the Democrats, either billionaire J.B. Pritzker, backed by Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and Mayor Rahm Emanuel, or Christopher Kennedy. That’s also how things are wired. But you knew that, too. The problem for Rauner is that, as of now, conservatives make up a sizable percentage of the Republican vote. Without them, where is he? But not so fast, says Pat Brady, a Rauner supporter, former Illinois GOP chairman and principal of the government affairs firm Next Generation Strategies. “I understand Ives’ anger. I know social conservatives are upset,” Brady said. “But to their credit, social conservatives, they don’t stay home on Election Day. “Bruce Rauner is the first governor to stand up to Mike Madigan, and the people of Illinois know it,” Brady said. “And 80 percent of the state has had enough with the Boss Democrats. So are conservatives going to throw their lot in with J.B. Pritzker and Madigan? I don’t think that’s going to happen.” That will be Rauner’s hard sell, to convince conservatives that without him, Illinois will remain Madiganistan. It will be difficult if not impossible for him to win without an effective coalition. But without conservatives, what is left of Rauner’s coalition? Wealthy businessmen? That’s not a coalition. In this, he’s quite like Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who also has the money guys with him but not much else, and remains quite beatable. Emanuel has been reaching out to Latinos in anticipation of more bad publicity and negative feelings coming his way when the murder trial of Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke, charged with the killing of black teenager Laquan McDonald, rolls around. Emanuel’s administration sat on the video of the shooting until after the mayor won re-election against Cook County Board Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia. Chuy won’t let him forget it. And neither will Chris Kennedy. But Emanuel has time and other people’s money. Rauner doesn’t have time, and he’ll be spending his own cash. On the Democratic side, at least Pritzker and Kennedy have a game plan. Pritzker with Boss Madigan and a massive TV ad budget. And Kennedy seeking minority votes with endorsements like that of Chuy Garcia’s. But what is Rauner’s game plan? That Boss Madigan has helped ruin the state? Rauner needs more than that, but his plan is becoming increasingly difficult to see. He was a businessman, not a social justice warrior at the beginning, then he wasn’t conservative, then he was a conservative for a few weeks, then he fired all the conservatives working for him and made sure he wasn’t a conservative by supporting taxpayer-funded abortion. It’s all been so very confusing. Conservatives will either find a challenger, or convince Rauner to do the math and hope he won’t seek re-election and save the Illinois GOP from a fight. Or he can run, while conservatives concentrate on their own state House and Senate races and keep the governor at a distance. “It’s best for the state if he announces he’s not running,” Ives said. “It would allow the party to come together and coalesce around another individual who could take on the Democrats. Because Rauner’s base has lost him. There’s no doubt about it. Talk to people around the state. You hear the same thing. His base isn’t with him.” Those who are quite close to the governor say he has no interest in caving, that he’ll fight. It might be politically bloody, but he doesn’t care. Rauner isn’t a weakling. He fought hard. He spent his money. He made terrible political mistakes that he didn’t have to make, but he insisted on making them. Now, he’s paying for them. Conservatives like Jeanne Ives will insist upon it.)

ILLINOIS FAMILY ACTION
— Is the Illinois GOP Civil War Finally Here? – John Biver
https://illinoisfamilyaction.org/2017/10/is-the-illinois-gop-civil-war-finally-here/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Now that prominent conservatives are seeing Governor Bruce Rauner for who he really is, we arrive at a genuinely dramatic moment in a state where the Republican Party’s failures have paved the way for Leftist policies to ruin the state. After signing several outrageously left-wing bills into law, an increasing number of rank and file conservatives and elected political leaders are finally seeing the truth about Governor Rauner. This gives conservatives in Illinois the opportunity to get their act together. Technically, every election cycle is another chance for limited government and pro-family Republicans — but some opportunities are greater than others. This is one. Examples of the lost chances happened in 1982 (Don Totten’s lt. governor candidacy), 2002 (the caucus leadership changes in the General Assembly), 2004 (Jack Ryan’s U.S. Senate campaign), and the past three gubernatorial primaries (all of which, 2006, 2010, and 2014, were lost due to State Senator Bill Brady’s involvement…that’s a sad story for another article). I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that there were people warning about Rauner four years ago — including IFI’s Laurie Higgins. Another voice, probably the loudest and most thorough, was Doug Ibendahl at RepublicanNewsWatch.com. Among the stronger recent statements, my favorites are that of State Rep. Peter Breen: “The Rauner experiment is over,” — and State Rep. David McSweeney: “Rauner is a failed governor.” Will Rauner run for reelection? He says he is, but we’ll see. If he does and conservatives mount a credible challenge to him, can Bruce and his millions of dollars be defeated? Not unless conservatives unite around a solid, intelligent and able governor/lt. governor ticket and run the best campaign of their lives. (Anyone reading this who personally knows Bill Brady, please ask him to stay the heck away from the race and enjoy leading the GOP super-minority in the state senate.) As simple as all of that sounds, Illinois conservatives have proven incapable of uniting, and in fact, have not been up to the task of successfully taking on the 40 years-in-the-making RINO (Republican in Name Only) establishment. Since Jim Thompson was elected Illinois governor in 1976, the RINOs have usually been happy to cooperate with the Democrats as long as individuals in the RINO club were able to become rich in the process. Yes, there were exceptions, such as moments during the decade-long state senate Republican majority in the 1990s, when Republicans acted as Republicans are supposed to. The fact that they were exceptions, however, is why we are where we are today. As several people are now realizing, this is a unique opportunity. President Donald Trump tapped the economic and cultural frustration in the electorate and defeated a talented primary field and the Democratic Party dynasty of our era in the general election. The same exasperation that exists in Illinois caused a majority of voters in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa to help candidate Trump take down the vaunted “blue wall.” Does it exist here on a large enough scale to send Rauner back to the private sector and take down the next silly Democratic Party left-wing nominee? Yes and yes. But it will take a competence level we haven’t seen from Illinois conservative candidates and consultants in a couple of generations. Does the candidate and consultant talent exist here to step up and lead? Yes on candidates and maybe on the consultants. Too many conservative campaign consultants don’t realize that in this era of Trump, things are different. The statewide campaign can no longer be all about their financial take on media buys, and their percentage of the cost of massive direct mailings and yard signs, or the fact that these “wise” consultants think they’re the smartest people in the room (they’re not). The campaign must be all about effectively communicating to the people of Illinois the serious problems that exist here. Those problems have gotten worse during Bruce Rauner’s tenure, and will speed-up in the wrong direction under a radical lefty like J.B. Pritzker. I have been saying this for decades — the people of Illinois are not much different from all those in the red states that surround us. This is not Vermont or Massachusetts or California. Cook County might not turn red any time soon, but there are plenty of what used to be called Reagan Democrats living in Chicago and its surrounds to give a conservative a primary and general election win. All that has been missing all these years is effective conservative leadership in the Illinois Republican Party. While Rauner’s money has purchased the party apparatus for the time being, a counter insurgency is possible and necessary. And the time for that is now.)

— U.S. Halt in Visa Services Leaves Cuban Families in Limbo – ERNESTO LONDOÑO
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/05/world/americas/cuba-us-visas.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Cubans have long regarded emigrating to the United States as something of a birthright derived from the privations they endured as a result of sanctions that Washington has imposed on Cuba for decades. Last week, for the first time in decades, the United States effectively shut down the immigration pipeline from the island as it sharply reduced its staff at the embassy in Havana in response to mysterious ailments there, leaving in limbo more than 100,000 Cubans, most of whom are seeking to reunite with relatives. The decision to indefinitely suspend visa processing at the embassy — one of the busiest consular posts in the region — could mean that the United States will fail to honor its obligations under a 1994 deal that requires the admission of at least 20,000 Cuban immigrants a year, current and former American diplomats say. The accord was reached in an effort to stem an exodus by Cubans who took to the seas in rafts by the thousands in the 1990s trying to reach Florida.)

They are especially furious that IRS promoted me in 1972, 1973, and 1974 and that GAO promoted me in 1986. In today’s dollars, I started at $15.56/hour (GS 4, Step 1) and ended at $122,991/year (GS-13 Step 10). In my defense, I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)

From what I see, ever-increasingly, residents of my precinct, Wheaton, Milton Township, DuPage County, and Illinois are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
http://www.tampabay.com/florida-politics/2017/10/05/still-booming-with-retirees-the-villages-gives-trump-gop-edge-in-florida/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Yet over time, the explosive growth has fueled a remarkable, somewhat under-the-radar demographic trend that is playing an increasingly key role in the country’s most prized swing state. Overwhelmingly white and Republican, The Villages and surrounding areas have offset the rise in Hispanic residents in Central Florida, part of the vaunted I-4 corridor where elections are decided. In a state with a history of bitterly close elections, small shifts matter greatly and this one played a key role in Donald Trump’s narrow victory.)

WBUR
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: An anti-Trump says “Trump Is Getting The Press He Deserves.” Are you getting what you deserve? Of course, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes say that I deserved what I got from my Democrat superiors in the federal government. My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.  My Democrat IRS did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974.  My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968. Of course, they say that I got what I deserved from the members of TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, Milton Township Republican Central Committee, Illinois Center Right Coalition, American Association of Political Consultants, etc.)

GOVERNMENT EXECUTIVE
— House Approves Budget Plan that Would Cut Federal Employee Benefits – Erich Wagner  (DIERSEN: If you sought a government office or a political office, what would your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes throw at you? They would throw at me that the federal government dramatically overpaid me and that my federal retirement benefits are much too generous. In my defense, I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)
http://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits/2017/10/house-approves-budget-would-cut-federal-benefits/141582/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Jessica Klement, legislative director of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, described the potential cuts to federal compensation as “hypocrisy.” “This sets the stage for the federal community to pay for tax reform,” she said. “You’re paying for middle class tax cuts on the backs of middle class federal employees and retirees. It goes against the fundamental premise of this tax reform package.” Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., the vice ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, called the budget resolution “ruinous,” and said that while his committee would be responsible for $32 billion in cuts, the cost of the overall budget to federal workers and retirees could reach as high as $163 billion over the next decade. “Federal employee pay and benefits are not the cause of this country’s deficit and debt,” Connolly said. “The federal workforce has already contributed nearly $200 billion toward reducing the country’s deficits in the form of pay freezes, pay raises insufficient to keep pace with inflation, furloughs and increased retirement contributions. We should honor and revere the service of our federal workforce, not denigrate it with the attacks included in this ugly budget.” National Treasury Employees Union National President Tony Reardon decried the proposal, which he said would unfairly punish government employees. “On paper, it may look like a way to save money but in the real world, cutting the paychecks and retirements of federal employees, just to help pay for tax cuts for the wealthy, is a mean-spirited way to build a national budget,” Reardon said. “Since when is it acceptable to attack the very people who are providing hurricane relief, protecting clean air and water, conducting cutting-edge scientific research, enforcing the tax laws, securing the border, maintaining the national parks and guarding our financial system?”)

I have always been in Group B. Most commonly, Democrat plants, Libertarian plants, Green plants, and RINOs reject the traditional family, right to life, immigration, illegal drugs, and/or equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks. Most commonly, members of Group A are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors and members of Group B are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time. Members of Group A want the IRP to promote LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, patronage, political affiliation discrimination, race and gender based preference giving, age discrimination, abolition of the First and Second Amendments, and even worse things.)

As Chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, my sole focus is on beating the Democrats and breaking up the Madigan Machine that has destroyed this state. When Republicans are fighting each other, Mike Madigan wins and Illinois loses.” But I also asked for a specific comment on Dan Proft and this is what I was told… Concerning Proft, the Illinois Republican Party has no comment at this time.)

He went on cruises and gambled,” Eric Paddock said, adding that Stephen Paddock recently sent a walker by mail to his 90-year-old mother in Florida. . .Stephen Paddock liked to pay high-stakes video poker, and once texted his brother that he won $250,000 at a casino. But his family didn’t know whether Stephen Paddock had significant gaming debts. WASHINGTON POST
— Use or lose annual leave – Eric Yoder  (DIERSEN: Needless-to-say, since 1966 when I was 18 years old, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have been furious that I got 13 vacation days per year during my first 3 years as a federal employee 1966-1969, 20 days per year during my 4th through 15th years 1971-1983, and 26 days per year during my 16th through 30th year (1984-1997). The vacation days that I got during my first 3 years was only about 6 per year because I worked only about 20 hours per week on average. I should write a book about what my Democrat federal superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates did to punish me for taking vacation days. They were beyond furious when I donated unused vacation days to “federal employees facing emergencies.”)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2017/10/03/qa-for-federal-workers-use-or-lose-leave/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: They’re referring to the general policy that a federal employee can carry only 30 days of vacation time — what the government calls annual leave — from one year to the next. It’s not a consideration for relatively new employees, who get 13 days per year during their first three years. But the rate goes up to 20 days per year for those with between three and 15 years, and 26 days for those with 15 years or more. Unused leave accumulates year to year, but any above 30 days that an employee does not take by the end of the leave year — not a calendar year; the 2017 leave year ends Jan. 6, 2018 — is forfeited. (It can be restored for limited reasons, and some employees can carry forward more than 30 days.) Those who won’t be able to use their excess leave on time might want to consider donating it to a leave transfer program to help federal employees facing emergencies, such as those arising from the recent hurricanes.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republicans are split over whether to support Gov. Bruce Rauner after his decision to sign the abortion funding measure, House Bill 40. Wheaton State Rep. Jeanne Ives has been approached by conservatives to consider opposing Rauner in the March primary, but for now, she is noncommittal. “I’m not actively pursuing it, I’m letting it kind of boil up and we’ll see what happens,” Ives said. “I’m hoping somebody comes forward to run against him and we take him out as Republicans. Or I’m hoping that he decides on his own, ‘Look my base is eroded beneath me, there’s no chance of me winning because my base is going to stay home.'” Ives, a West Point graduate, has served in the Illinois House for five years. She said she also disagrees with the governor’s approval of the education funding bill and the sanctuary state law, both signed earlier this year.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The situation is sickeningly familiar to anyone who works on — or reads — a metropolitan daily newspaper, whether it’s in New Orleans, Detroit or just about any other American city. The paper is hurting financially. It cuts reporters, photographers and editors to make ends meet. Then it cuts even deeper. The journalism suffers, but the paper’s work is still vital to its community. And a question looms: Will it even survive the next decade? “The real crisis in American journalism is at the local and metro level,” says Jim Friedlich, executive director of the Lenfest Institute for Journalism in Philadelphia, founded last year to save local journalism in Philadelphia and spread the cure around the nation. With the death of their old business model — based on once-plentiful print advertising — newsrooms are trying something new, he said. Like never before, they are turning to philanthropic sources and community support for sustenance.)

FOX NEWS CHICAGO
— Those who are pro-life feel betrayed by Rauner after signing of abortion bill – Mike Flannery  (DIERSEN: From what I see, any candidate who runs against Rauner or against any Rauner-backed candidate in the Republican primary next year will be called a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, bigot, and even worse things.)
http://www.fox32chicago.com/news/local/those-who-are-pro-life-feel-betrayed-by-rauner-after-signing-of-abortion-bill
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “The governor has no path to victory. Bruce Rauner is done. He cannot win,” said State. Rep. Peter Breen. He’s the Republican floor leader in the Illinois House and he’s now leading a revolt of social conservatives against the party’s governor. It’s political fallout from Bruce Rauner’s surprise decision to sign into law an abortion rights bill he previously promised to veto. But the governor’s Republican critics are now offering other reasons to reject him. Lombard’s State Rep. Peter Breen claims that only after Gov. Rauner was excluded from the face-to-face bargaining did other Republicans finally achieve the most basic agreements with democrats in the state capitol. “When you look at everything from the budget negotiations and a range of other issues, he is at the point now where he can no longer be in the room where they are negotiating agreements with the general assembly,” Breen said. An outspoken pro-life Republican, Breen insists his unhappiness with Gov. Rauner’s leadership goes far beyond the abortion issue. Some party activists were stunned by Rauner’s decision to sign the so-called “Trust Act.” They complain it made Illinois a sanctuary state by prohibiting local law enforcement from working in some cases with U.S. immigration and customs agents.  Others are offended by Rauner’s public posture on President Trump. “He won’t say President Trump’s name.  Won’t even acknowledge his existence,” said State Rep. David McSweeney. A former state party chairman, though, says Rauner’s unorthodox approach has worked for other Republicans in heavily Democratic Illinois. “We see what model actually works in this state with Jim Edgar, who was three terms who was pro-choice. Judy Baar Topinka, Mark Kirk. I know a lot of the people on the right get angry with that. But we’ve gotta be realistic about the state we live in,” Pat Brady said. Those leading this Republican revolt against Gov. Rauner know they face a tight timetable and time is not on their side. They need to find a candidate for governor, a running mate for Lt. Governor and collect thousands of signatures by Dec. 4th.  Not to mention raising the several million dollars needed to run a credible campaign. Although Gov. Rauner has not yet announced whether he will seek re-election, allies are collecting signatures on his nominating petitions.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rauner used his money and power to rebuild the Illinois Republican Party and ensure loyalty to him. Still, it’s unclear now whether Rauner’s wealth will be able to keep rank-and-file Republicans in line. Writing “big campaign checks,” Breen contended, is “the only unique feature left in Rauner’s favor” and something that may make others reluctant to criticize the governor. That means “we’re going to have to find alternate sources of funding,” he said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Many of us dream of having enough money to shrug off the workaday chains and embrace freedom. (Or so we’re told.) Wanczyk, the Repsels, and other lottery winners face similar choices: Splurge or invest? Keep working or quit? We imagine many readers just took a nanosecond to make their choice. They may be shocked to learn what researchers have found: Most American winners have kept working after winning the lottery. Some started their own businesses, or scaled back to part time. Most often they haven’t changed employers. From the Department of Timeless Quotations: “Certainly, money is important, but there are a lot of other aspects to work that play a big role: relationships, achievement needs that people have, status needs outside of money,” Bowling Green State University psychology professor Scott Highhouse told The Christian Science Monitor back in 2004.)

WBEZ
— Illinois Republicans Split Over Abandoning Rauner After Abortion Bill – Tony Arnold (DIERSEN: From what I see, any candidate who runs against Rauner in the Republican primary will be called a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, bigot, and even worse things.)
https://www.wbez.org/shows/wbez-updates/illinois-republicans-split-over-abandoning-rauner-after-abortion-bill/e6e2ffb5-5397-4029-91d9-7a8b5237550b
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republicans are split as to whether they should abandon Governor Bruce Rauner after he signed bill into law on Thursday that expands Medicaid to cover abortions. GOP State Senator Dan McConchie says Rauner’s signature underscores grave concerns Republicans have with him as their party’s nominee in next year’s election. He says a Republican primary challenger is very likely. But Rauner heavily funds the Illinois Republican Party — and the chairman of the state party says there’s no daylight between Rauner and the party.)

http://www.wirepoints.com/this-face-will-appear-prominently-in-the-books-about-rauners-and-perhaps-illinois-last-gasp/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Just a short and simple prediction, offered for now without the factual backup that exists: The overbearing role of Diana Rauner, a liberal Democrat, in her husband’s administration will come to be recognized as a primary reason for his failure. And since Bruce Rauner was perhaps Illinois’ last hope, she’ll have a place in the history books.)
