(FROM THE ARTICLE: It used to be that when someone called me an abomination, I was in the presence of a homophobe. But a recent opinion column in Texas State University’s main newspaper damned me for a different reason. I’m abominable because I’m white. The column wasn’t aimed at me personally but at my kind, and the Hispanic student who wrote it began by saying that “of all the white people” he had ever encountered, there were a dozen or so who rose to the level of “decent.” The allowance that 12 of us passed muster was perhaps the most generous passage in a screed that had an unambiguous message for white people, be they “good-hearted liberals” or “right-wing extremists.” “I hate you,” he wrote, “because you shouldn’t exist. You are both the dominant apparatus on the planet and the void in which all other cultures, upon meeting you, die.” The headline: “Your DNA Is an Abomination.”)

We would NOT have itemized our deductions a) if we had rented instead of owned, b) if I had not taken job-related graduate courses, c) if we had given less money to 501(c)(3) organizations, and d) if we had not had major medical and dental expenses.)
https://www.azcentral.com/story/money/business/economy/2017/12/10/tax-reform-pending-congress-time-look-your-taxes/921033001/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Taxpayers who wait until the ink is dry on the sweeping Republican tax-reform plan could leave some money on the table. While the vast majority of changes won’t take effect until January — assuming the legislation is signed into law — several tax-shaving actions still can be taken before then. The waning weeks of 2017 thus are shaping up as particularly important for year-end planning, as many people may not be able to take advantage of several key deductions come Jan. 1. Only about 30 percent of individual taxpayers itemize deductions, and that could drop to around 10 percent with the proposed changes. Even for people who continue to itemize, plenty of familiar deductions might no longer be available. As a rule, taxpayers often find it worthwhile to defer income into the next year, if they can, and to take as many deductions and credits as possible in the current year. “With tax reform, that strategy makes even more sense,” said Mark Luscombe, principal federal tax analyst at Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting. Most people can’t do much to delay salary income. But for those who can ask their employer to defer year-end bonuses or delay their own invoices for a personal business, that income likely will be taxed at somewhat reduced rates next year. “Most people in most brackets will get at least some benefits (from the proposed lower rates),” said Luscombe, referring to House and Senate bills that had been passed as of early December. Try moving deductions into 2017 On the deduction side, there are several year-end planning opportunities. People who itemize might want to focus on deductions that, as of early December, were slated to get cut entirely or scaled back. These include the proposed elimination of the federal deduction for state/local income taxes and a possible new $10,000 annual deduction cap on real estate taxes. Other itemized deductions likely will continue to be available, but only for people who itemize, such as the deduction for charity donations and that for mortgage interest, which could be scaled back a bit. Year-end planning opportunities thus might include prepaying a property-tax installment due early in 2018, making a premature estimated state-tax payment or writing an early mortgage check prior to Jan. 1. Also, the remaining weeks of 2017 could be a time to double-up on charity donations that might not deliver any tax benefits next year, depending on your circumstances. Donations can be made by credit card prior to Jan. 1 and applied for 2017, even if the bill isn’t paid for weeks or months later. For certain deductions that have thresholds to meet, it can be beneficial to bunch expenses and utilize them in alternate years. This is true of medical expenses, which are currently deductible only to the extent they exceed 10 percent of a person’s adjusted gross income. As of early December, the House bill would repeal this deduction, though the Senate version would retain it, allowing deductions above 7.5 percent of AGI temporarily before reverting to 10 percent in 2019. This creates an opportunity to utilize the medical-expense deduction, possibly by prepaying certain items during 2017, if you are near this year’s threshold. . .The Government Accountability Office, in a new report, estimates Americans pay 81.7 percent of the taxes owed on a voluntary and timely basis. The report looked at individual, corporate, estate, excise and employment taxes from 2008 to 2010. According to the report, which relies on Internal Revenue Service estimates, taxpayers collectively owed $2.5 trillion in taxes annually, of which $2.04 trillion was paid in a timely and voluntary manner. Another $52 billion was collected in late payments and enforcement actions, with the IRS estimating $406 billion never will be paid.)

They stress that I sought and obtained a) student draft deferments 1966-1970 and b) a financial hardship draft deferment 1970-1971.)
http://harrisondaily.com/opinion/editorial-giving-veterans-preference-in-hiring/article_2f3830ba-dc47-11e7-87a1-37ff376b43b1.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Finding work as a police officer or firefighter isn’t always easy. Openings in local departments can be scarce. Still, it’s an area where it helps to have served in the military, as many government hiring managers give preference when filling those jobs to veterans. Many do, but not all. The advantage is fading these days as more mayors and town managers look to bypass old rules for government hiring, including ones that demand preferential treatment for vets. It’s not a positive development. Not only are veterans often uniquely qualified for public safety jobs, our national government has put up hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of taxpayer dollars for their training and education. It’s a shame, and simply wasteful, not to leverage that resource. In Massachusetts, the process of filling jobs with the state and local governments have extended similar preferential treatment to those who’ve served, through the civil service system. Currently 145 of 351 cities and towns in the state subscribe to that system. The problem emerging is a trend away from civil service. Local governments are seeking and getting the state’s blessing to bypass the rules, which local officials claim constrain their hiring decisions. Diversity is among the top reasons cited by mayors and town managers seeking flexibility. Civil service rules hamstring urban departments, for instance, in efforts to land minority candidates, in part because veterans who march to the top of hiring lists aren’t always minorities. A report earlier this year by the Pew Research Center suggests the military is nearly as diverse as the rest of the country. Racial and ethnic minorities represent 40 percent of the 1.3 million members of the active-duty military — and about 44 percent of the broader population ages 18 to 44. African Americans are more represented in the military — about 17 percent of the active-duty service — than in the population as a whole. That’s not to say the applicant pool for local police and fire jobs is always diverse, but it does suggest that members of the military can give city and town halls options to diversity. What cannot be overlooked in that effort is a qualified labor pool ready to sign up for some of the most taxing, stressful jobs in government. Nor can we forget our obligation to those who have dutifully served this country.)

Itemized deductions — gone The new tax plan limits itemized deductions, which might increase your federal taxes, according to Business Insider. Because approximately 70% of U.S. filers claim the deduction, this could affect a lot of people. You might think those who itemize typically make a lot of money, but 86.8% of taxpayers who itemize have adjusted gross incomes below $200,000.)

DAILY HERALD
— Tax proposal could carry high costs for many homeowners – Ken Harney
http://www.dailyherald.com/entlife/20171208/tax-proposal-could-carry-high-costs-for-many-homeowners
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Whether you already own a home or are thinking of purchasing, the new tax legislation pending before Congress poses serious questions: Am I going to get smacked with punitive new taxes? Will the value of my home decrease because previous real estate tax benefits have been stripped away? Or am I one of the lucky ones, well insulated against big losses? . . . Though no independent or academic studies have been published estimating the effects of the new tax legislation on home values and prices, most studies to date have concluded that federal tax benefits are a component of property values. Strip these away and buyers will not obtain the full traditional financial benefits of ownership, and will pay less for homes. Economists at the National Association of Realtors estimate that the tax changes could whack 10 percent off average prices around the country, with declines steeper in states with higher home costs and tax burdens, lower in areas with more moderate prices and taxes. The flip side of all this, of course, is that if prices do decline, that will make purchasing a home more affordable — potentially good news for renters and move-up buyers priced out of the current marketplace. Tax-free capital gains exclusion. Under the legislation, owners will still be able to “exclude” up to $500,000 ($250,000 for single filers) of gain on their home sales. But to qualify they will need to have lived in their house for five of the preceding eight years; for decades the standard has been two out of the preceding five years. For many buyers who own homes for extended periods, this change won’t matter. But for many others it could pose problems, especially for people who transfer jobs in less than five years, and owners forced to sell because of divorce, health or other issues. Mortgage interest, second home deductions. As of this writing, House and Senate conferees had not agreed on whether to cut the home mortgage interest deduction maximum to $500,000 or to eliminate interest write-offs on second homes. Both are only in the House version and would primarily affect upper-income owners. So where does all this leave you? It depends on what you own, where you live, what you earn and what you may want to buy. Overall, the Republicans’ tax changes look like a net plus for corporations and stockholders, but a net negative for people who’ve benefited the most from the tax code’s longtime preferences for homeownership over renting.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Rauner primary challenger Ives to make immigration law an issue (DIERSEN: I have not received any notification that “Ives is scheduled to hold a Thursday news conference.” What do you say to Ives “supporters” who tell her to not include diersen@aol.com on her press advisory and press release lists? They want Ives to “punish” me for including links in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails to articles written by those who they blacklist. What do you say to politicians a) who glorify, praise, pander to, and give scoops to reporters who they manipulate/dominate or who they are manipulated/dominated by and b) punish reporters like me who they cannot manipulate/dominate?)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-jeanne-ives-immigration-20171207-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican governor challenger Jeanne Ives is scheduled to hold a Thursday news conference to unveil legislation that would repeal an immigration law Gov. Bruce Rauner signed. The Trust Act was approved by lawmakers and the governor just months ago, so a bid to repeal it is all but dead on arrival. The law protects immigrants who are in the country illegally from being detained solely because of their immigration status. For Ives, Thursday’s event outside the Cook County Jail will be a chance to highlight another difference she has with Rauner in their race for the Republican governor nomination. His signature on the Trust Act in August angered conservatives, but has been overshadowed by their disdain for his signature on an abortion law the following month. Immigration was a key issue for President Donald Trump in last year’s election, and he won some Downstate counties by wide margins. So the issue could be one that comes up as Rauner tries to fend off Ives’ challenge. When the governor signed the bill into law, he said he sought the guidance of law enforcement officials. “I asked them, should I sign this bill, should I not sign this bill?” Rauner said at the time. “They all said to me, governor, this is a reasonable compromise, it will help us do our jobs better, it will help us keep our communities safer.” Ives is set to appear with Brian McCann, whose brother Dennis was hit by a car and killed while crossing the street in Logan Square by driver Saul Chavez. Police said Chavez had a blood-alcohol content of 0.29 percent. Chavez was released on bond and never prosecuted, and the family says Cook County’s so-called sanctuary laws allowed Chavez to flee the country.)
— Chicago businesses keeping a wary eye on immigration deal deadline – Robert Reed (DIERSEN: From what I see, ever-increasingly, “Chicago businesses” want to replace their employees who are members of Group B with those who are members of Group A. Members of Group A are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors and members of Group B are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)

http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/12/3-questions-for-the-il-gop-about-who-gets-what-funds-and-who-decides-.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Review has asked, but has not heard yet from IL GOP Spokesperson Aaron DeGroot three preliminary questions: How does the IL GOP determine where the checks are going? Who is involved in that decision making? How much does the IL GOP expect to be distributed and to whom in the upcoming days before the March primary? We will report the responses as soon as we hear back from the IL GOP. If you have other questions you’d like to be asked of the IL GOP, please offer in the comment section below. UPDATE: State Representative David McSweeney (R-Barrington) called for IL GOP Party Chairman Tim Schneider to step down Wednesday afternoon: “Political insider Tim Schneider is a lapdog for failed Governor Rauner, the Worst Republican Governor in America,” McSweeney said in a text message to Illinois Review. “Incredibly Governor Rauner just admitted that he’s not in charge of the state. Schneider, who was the chief Rauner cheerleader for the Capitol Compromise tax hike and sanctuary state bill, should immediately resign as GOP Chairman.”)

http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2017-12-06/tom-kacich-40-years-enough-urbana-gop-committeeman.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: His friendly foe in Urbana’s Cunningham 10 precinct retired in 2016, and now Jan Miller — the Republican precinct committeeman in what is generally regarded as the most Democratic precinct in Champaign County — is stepping down after 40 years. Back in 2009, then-County Clerk Mark Shelden said that Miller and his Democratic counterpart, Bernadine Stake, had set the county record for most consecutive two-year terms (16) as committeemen in the same precinct. Miller has been a GOP committeeman since 1978. Stake had served for Democrats from 1980 to 2016. “We’re still super active, but 40 years, that’s enough,” Miller said of the work he and his wife, Karen, have done for the party in the precinct centered around Carle Park in Urbana. “It was really more than 40.” Before he became committeeman in Cunningham 10, Miller said, he was the GOP committeeman in a Coles County precinct near Eastern Illinois University, while he was a student there. That’s where he met former Gov. Jim Edgar, who had lived in Charleston, attended EIU and later represented the area in the Illinois House. “I got to know him really well. I have a picture of my 1965 Chevrolet with a giant Edgar roof sign on it,” said Miller. “We used to go out and take groups of kids down to Paris and other towns to work for him. We had a lot of fun, and I made a lot of good friends.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Every few years, someone promotes the idea of mandatory national service for young Americans. Just as regularly, the idea fades away. But for a variety of reasons right now, this would be a great time for Congress to put finally put obligatory national service in place. The latest call for this comes from Isabel Sawhill of Brookings. As she points out, mandatory national service has been supported in the past by leaders such as Sen. John McCain, Presidents George H.W. and George W. Bush, Gov. John Kasich and Mitt Romney. Why is this a good idea? One year or more of national service gives young adults a valuable dose of reality before they enter college. It gives them greater perspective to choose what they really want to study.)

WASHINGTON POST
— Bannon rails against Romney in Alabama speech: ‘You hid behind your religion’ to avoid Vietnam – David Weigel (DIERSEN: If you avoided the draft, you should expect that your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes will use that against you. I sought and obtained a) student draft deferments 1966-1070 and b) a financial draft deferment 1970-1971. But what if I had been 4-F? — Despite Trump, federal employee morale improves under Trump – Joe Davidson (DIERSEN: Democrats have run the federal government. Democrats are running the federal government. Democrats will continue to run the federal government.)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2017/12/06/despite-trump-federal-employee-morale-improves-under-trump/?utm_term=.d7fe684b6109
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If the top office on my job was unexpectedly filled with a racist, Islamophobe caught boasting about groping women, it would hurt my morale. Not so, apparently, with many federal employees. Although President Trump has repeatedly disgraced the nation, not to mention proposing cuts to federal employees’ retirement and their workplaces, the morale of federal workers has gone up on his watch. So say the data. The Best Places to Work in the Federal Government rankings released Wednesday by the Partnership for Public Service and the Deloitte consulting firm, indicate, with notable exceptions, the federal government is a better place to work since Trump took office. Overall, there was a 2.1 point increase in 2017 employee engagement over 2016. The 61.5/100 score is the highest since 2011. The rankings are based largely on the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey that was conducted in May and June by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). That survey, released in October, also indicated the highest level of employee engagement since 2011, predicting the Best Places findings. But the data’s big picture conflict with the workplace image drawn by many federal employees who have expressed disgust and anxiety over the Trump administration. This year’s increase is part of a three-year upward trend that began under former president Barack Obama. The scores are based on questions from the survey.)

— Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa on why people don’t invest: Spending every penny on ‘Booze or women or movies’ – Kyle Swenson (DIERSEN: While I was a “working American” 1964-1997 and since 1997, I have always a) spent far less on immediate pleasures than my peers and b) saved far more than my peers. In today’s dollars, since 1997, I have had $1,454,723 less to spend and/or save because my Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement offer. In today’s dollars, my salary was $122,991/year, but my Civil Service Retirement System pension is only $50,856/year.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The suggestion – that anyone not socking away their savings in the bank or investments must be profligately throwing their money away – played directly into the critique that Republicans are disconnected from the majority of working Americans.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Rauner vs. Ives: A nasty war for control of the Illinois GOP – GREG HINZ
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20171204/BLOGS02/171209960/illinois-republican-governor-race-war-for-control-of-the-party
(FROM THE ARTICLE: She described him as a man who “sold out” to Chicago Democrats, not only allowing a tax hike to pass but also signing laws making Illinois a haven for illegal immigrants and allowing taxpayer funds to pay for abortion. He laughed the charges off as “baloney”—then said in so many words that he, and not she, is the person who can keep state government on the path of honesty and stop it from totally being turned over to the control of Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan. There wasn’t much subtlety today as—with everybody’s nominating petitions finally filed—the GOP primary race for governor started off with a bang. Incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner and challenger state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton are ready to rumble. Ives, a West Point graduate who has become a champion of fiscal and economic conservatives, started off the exchange with an internet video post in which she labeled the incumbent “Benedict Rauner,” echoing a line first used by Illinois Policy Institute chief John Tillman. It’s a clear sign that, in the era of Donald Trump, Ives intends to tap into the same sort of populist fervor against “the ruling class” that made him president. Ives said she believed Rauner four years ago when he promised to shake up the state. But she added: “The tough-talking dude on a Harley with no agenda turned out to be an empty Carhartt jacket. We were promised a conservative reform governor. Instead we got an Ivy League gender studies professor.” In a later news conference, Ives toned it down a few notches, but argued that Illinois needs a chief executive to keep a lid on taxes in a way that Rauner has not. The first three items on her agenda: lowering property taxes, attracting more jobs and going after corruption at every level of government. Rauner allies argue he has tried to do all of those things, only to be blocked by large Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, and by some Republicans who broke party ranks to back the increase in the state income tax. Rauner himself, meeting with reporters shortly after Ives, shrugged off her attacks, as well as a nasty article last week in the National Review, a leading conservative publication, declaring him the worst GOP governor in the country. Regardless of what that “political hit piece” said, Rauner contends, the truth is that it was Madigan who blocked the kind of reforms he wants. And, he continued, he is better positioned to hold off the speaker and whomever turns out to be the Democratic nominee for governor. His message to GOP primary voters: “I will win the general election. I will win it, and if we don’t win it, nothing else matters.” He was referring to upcoming reapportionment after the 2020 census, and Democratic talk about implementing a graduated income tax the governor said would hit many middle-class families. Asked if he was saying Ives is too conservative to win a general election, Rauner gave the same answer—”I will win”—eventually adding, “I have the best chance of anybody in the state to win the general election.” He then went on to rip Madigan, saying the speaker “has become a millionaire” by preserving a “rigged” property tax system that benefits Madigan’s property tax appeals law firm. On paper, Illinois history would suggest that while firebrand conservatives such as Ives draw a lot of attention, in the end, relative moderates prevail in what never has been a leading conservative state. That certainly was the case with prior Govs. Jim Thompson and Jim Edgar, who fought off conservatives. Beyond that, Rauner has the financial resources to spend whatever it takes. Ives has collected around $300,000 so far with contributions from investor Peter Huizenga, railroad asset lessor Vince Kolber, Chicago Bears owner Virginia McCaskey and others. Rauner had $65.5 million in his main campaign fund as of Sept. 30. She could even that up somewhat if wealthy conservative businessman Richard Uihlein switches sides and supports her; Ives said today she’d accept funds from him, despite his financial role in backing Alabama Senate hopeful Roy Moore. But it’s far from clear that will happen. On the other hand, as Trump has shown, many of the old political rules are in question now. The state’s GOP establishment is not what it was, with some congressmen and other leaders so far sitting out the race. Will Rauner go negative in a big way if polling shows Ives is pulling ahead? It’s too soon to tell in what’s shaping up as a lively, perhaps all-out battle for control of the Illinois Republican Party.)
