Dubbed recently as the “children of the Great Recession” by Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, millennials are the best educated and most diverse population of young people in U.S. history. They are also perhaps the most coddled, some would say spoiled. As they emerge this year as the United States’ largest demographic group — some 75 million strong — millennials are taking up the mantle as the most impactful generation since the baby boomers. Their influence has started slowly, due largely to the economic instability that has left many struggling to find good-paying jobs and saddled with staggering student loan debt. (FROM THE ARTICLE: During the first eight months of the year, gamblers dropped $18.9 million into video poker machines in the city of Kankakee.  Daily Journal senior reporter Lee Provost recently reported on video poker totals in his weekly business column. The numbers were sobering — and staggering. In Kankakee, $4.3 million was “lost” in the machines. Ask yourself this. Who can afford to lose $4.3 million? The totals wagered from Kankakee add up to roughly all the totals from Aroma Park, $811,751; Bradley, $8.5 million; Bourbonnais, $1.8 million; Manteno, $6.3 million; and Momence, $2 million — combined. Here’s what this tells you. A disproportionate number of the terminals, or the wagers, or both, are coming from middle class and lower middle class areas. Does it make sense that Kankakee’s wagers are 10 times those of Bourbonnais? When video gambling was legalized, the initial thought seemed to be to help out small restaurants and taverns. Instead, what has happened is the creation of mini-professional storefronts that have rows of machines. A discussion of Aroma Park’s experience indicated that is where the money is flowing now. One mainstream Aroma Park restaurant no longer operates its machines. In addition, one local mayor quoted indicated that she had not seen many cars in front of one wagering establishment. Translation: It might be that a small number of people are losing a lot of money. Moreover, the amounts wagered are escalating rapidly — up by a third or more in half a dozen communities. Now, we would not want to be Carry Nation with the ax, crusading against demon rum. It would be impossible to go back to no gambling. But a wide range of studies estimates that somewhere from 1 to 2 percent of the population can be classified as being “problem gamblers.” These are people who don’t know when to stop, and show up to follow a bad day with another long session to get even. So, in the pile of proceeds being raked in by the state, we ask a question: Is enough money being set aside to help those who will need help? Much like cigarette taxes, the government seems to need and relish the money. Unlike tobacco, are we warning people enough?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump describes himself as a businessman. And he says he wants to run the government more like a business. But would any business hire Mr. Trump? It isn’t a trivial question. Given the Republican presidential nominee’s vulgar boasts about sexually assaulting women and trying to coerce a woman to commit adultery with him — among other things — it is hard to believe he could get past the human resources department of a Fortune 500 company. Over the last decade, much of corporate America has put in place strict policies to deal with sexual harassment and other offensive behavior, trying to make amends for an abhorrent history of letting such conduct go unchecked (remember “Mad Men”?). Hiring procedures at large companies, particularly for senior positions, include extensive background checks, which typically include interviewing former colleagues and combing through articles, court records and, yes, social media. Thousands of employees have been fired or pushed out for using far less repugnant language than Mr. Trump’s words about how he gropes women. Walmart, the nation’s largest employer, with some 2.2 million employees, has explicit policies, for example, that prohibit “sexually explicit language, off-color jokes, remarks about a person’s body” as well as “using slurs or negative stereotyping,” “verbal kidding, teasing or joking” and “intimidating acts, such as bullying or threatening.” By those definitions, it is not clear if Mr. Trump would qualify to be hired as a janitor, let alone a senior executive. A spokesman for Walmart, asked whether Mr. Trump’s comments would disqualify him from employment there, said: “We’ve got a policy of not entertaining hypotheticals.” Mr. Trump has apologized for his language, which he described as “locker room talk.” But he used the language while on the job; he was recorded on a live microphone while working to promote “The Apprentice,” his popular reality show.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Because Donald J. Trump hasn’t released his tax returns, we don’t know exactly what portion of his fortune he has sent the federal government. But in the second presidential debate, he confirmed that there were a number of years where he paid nothing at all. A week ago, The Times published his partial state tax returns from 1995 that show a substantial business loss that could have allowed him to avoid paying income taxes for nearly two decades. When asked by the moderator Anderson Cooper whether he indeed used the loss to get out of a tax bill, Mr. Trump replied, “Of course I do.”  But rather than attempt to convince the American people that he had paid his fair share of taxes, Mr. Trump has vociferously defended the virtue of his ways, even arguing that paying nothing makes him fit to be president. “That makes me smart,” he retorted when presented with the idea during the first presidential debate. He told the Fox host Bill O’Reilly two days later, “A lot of people say, ‘That’s the kind of thinking that I want running this nation.’ ” He’s now calling it “brilliant.” Mr. Trump’s assertion that people should pay as little as they can in taxes — because, as he told Mr. O’Reilly, the government will “waste the money” — fits with quite an old conservative ideology. The government is bloated, inefficient and trampling on freedoms, the thinking goes; therefore, it deserves as little of our tax money to prop it up as possible. It’s no coincidence that Mr. Trump proposed a tax cut during the primary that was unprecedented, costing the government about double the revenue as would have been lost to Mitt Romney’s plan.)

A week after hosting a fundraiser that netted Trump $1.5 million— and hours after video recorded during a 2005 appearance on “Access Hollywood” in which the candidate talks about his pursuit of a married woman and groping women— Claar said he’s still backing Trump over Hillary Clinton. “I can’t say (Trump’s statements) doesn’t bother me,” Claar said Saturday in a phone interview while he waited for a flight at a Florida airport. “But I also read excerpts from Hillary’s email that is also somewhat unfortunate.”  Meanwhile, other Illinois politicians weren’t so forgiving. Congressman Rodney Davis, a Republican representing central and southwest Illinois, called for Trump to drop out of the race. Rep. John Shimkus, a Republican from southern Illinois issued a statement Saturday saying he was “profoundly disappointed and disgusted by Donald Trump’s comments.” Gov. Bruce Rauner did not attend this year’s GOP convention and has not endorsed Trump, but has said he would support the Republican nominee. Sen. Mark Kirk, locked in a close race for reelection against Democrat Tammi Duckworth, has also called for his party to drop Trump as a candidate. Claar on Saturday admitted video of Trump in 2005 bragging about groping women and courting a married acquaintance has shaken some of those who paid to be in the crowd of 350 when Trump visited the Bolingbrook Golf Club. Among those in attendance at the fundraiser in the country club’s Reagan Room: Todd Ricketts, head of a conservative super PAC and a co-owner of the Chicago Cubs; Weather Tech CEO Dave McNeil; and Bears Hall of Famer Dan Hampton. Claar, who began a trip to Cuba Friday night and missed the early coverage of Trump’s remarks recorded during a 2005 appearance on Access Hollywood, said he got a text from one of the donors who attended last week’s Trump fundraiser. “He said ‘Well, it’s over,’” Claar said Saturday as he waited for a flight in Florida. “I texted him ‘Why? (FROM THE ARTICLE: “It could all come down to Colorado.”  That’s the latest conventional wisdom from presidential poll watchers. But it may not be legal American citizens in my adopted home state who choose the next commander in chief. Instead, it could very well be foreign noncitizens voting illegally in the Rocky Mountains — and in other crucial swing states — who seal our country’s fate. Former Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler identified nearly 5,000 noncitizens in Colorado who voted in the 2010 general election. Gessler’s office uncovered upwards of 12,000 noncitizens registered to vote. Liberal groups who oppose stronger election system protections attacked him for trying to verify citizenship status — because God forbid public officials sworn to uphold the rule of law actually do anything to enhance the integrity of our election system! Compounding the problem: The militant immigration expansionist group Mi Familia Vota, connected with the Service Employees International Union, has ramped up its efforts in swing states to facilitate naturalization and registration of Latino voters who will promote the open-borders agenda at the polls. Another rare defender of American sovereignty, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, fought in court for his state’s right to require citizenship documents from people who register to vote at motor vehicle offices. Last month, a federal appeals court struck down the Kansas law despite the U.S. Constitution’s conferral of responsibility for determining who may vote to states. In a scene straight out of “Alice in Wonderland,” Kobach faced a contempt hearing for battling against those who hold contempt for truly free and fair elections. He was forced to sign an agreement with the ACLU allowing more than 18,000 motor-voter registrants to cast ballots this November while litigation continues. Last year, undercover investigative journalist James O’Keefe and his Project Veritas team blew the whistle on North Carolina political operatives who encouraged people to vote even if they were noncitizens. Like Kobach, O’Keefe endures attacks on his efforts to ensure clean elections by grievance-mongers screaming about phony voter “disenfranchisement.” Never mind that a nonpartisan study in 2014 from Old Dominion University concluded “that 6.4 percent of noncitizens voted in 2008 and 2.2 percent of noncitizens voted in 2010.” Put on your shocked faces: These illegal noncitizen voters overwhelmingly supported Democrats. And their votes were enough to tilt the presidential election results in North Carolina to President Obama, along with handing over “Democratic victories in congressional races including a critical 2008 Senate race (Al Franken’s victory in Minnesota) that delivered for Democrats a 60-vote filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.” The ACLU and other left-wing groups sabotaging voter integrity laws see no voter fraud, hear no voter fraud and speak no voter fraud. Thanks to their efforts, voter ID laws have been tossed in Texas, Wisconsin and North Carolina. Committed to flooding the voting rolls with every last potential Democrat constituent, their operational motto is: No unqualified voter left behind. But J. Christian Adams, a former Justice Department election lawyer in the Voting Rights Section, has exposed the systemic assault on the election process at every level by activist groups funded by liberal billionaire George Soros, including: –Blocking citizenship verification. –Automatic voter registration of welfare recipients without local verification checks. –Massive foreign language ballot expansion. –Obstruction of efforts to include state qualification instructions on voter registration forms. This past week, the Public Interest Law Foundation uncovered thousands of foreign aliens registered to vote in swing states Virginia and Pennsylvania thanks to the federal Motor Voter law. It’s the tip of the iceberg because the studies include just a small sample of counties. Oh, Virginia voters, you’ll be thrilled to know that your top election officials are now trying to cover up the true extent of the scandal. PILF noted that the commissioner of the Virginia Department of Elections issued a written guidance to local election officials instructing them “not to respond to our requests for records pertaining to non-citizen voters.” In Pennsylvania, election officials are so apathetic and incompetent that even when aliens begged to get off the voter rolls because they had never registered to vote in the first place, they were ignored. Catherine Engelbrecht of election integrity activist group True the Vote is right: “Just voting isn’t enough.” Keeping this republic depends on the vigilance of citizens committed to an almost impossible task these days: Making American elections American again.)

But her hardships are not the result of slavery from years past – as her professors and peers like to insist – but instead from the current political persecution she says she faces for being a conservative on a liberal college campus. “I have been told since day one that I would not succeed without the demeaning benefits of affirmative action,” says Richer, 18. “One of my professors actually told me that it’s offensive to say that everyone can achieve the American dream.” Statements like these are common among the liberal academia, who teach that “systemic oppression” and “institutionalized racism” are the most significant factors of whether or not one will achieve success in life. But because Richer doesn’t but into it, she’s mocked and ridiculed and blackballed. “One of my classes is entirely structured around the so-called belief in ‘white privilege,’” she told The College Fix, referring to a humanities elective. “Professors shame white students from speaking up against it, and whenever I do they look at me like I’m a traitor.” According to Richer, a political science major, such classes victimize women of color and force other students to justify their current “oppression.” In an attempt to balance the political climate of her campus, Richer took a position as the secretary of a proposed chapter of the conservative Young Americans for Freedom group. But late last month, student government leaders refused to allow the club to officially be recognized on campus, accusing it of being too similar to the College Republicans. “I was disgusted by the hostility I felt for daring to give a voice to conservatives on campus,” she says. “College is advertised as a place for your mind to grow, but I didn’t realize how much of a lie it was until I saw firsthand how these ‘student leaders’ attempt to dictate how students think on campus.”)

The Naperville Township Republican Organization decided to hold a primary next year instead of a caucus to choose candidates for positions before the April 4 election. Seats included in the primary are for supervisor, clerk, assessor, highway commissioner and four township trustees. Carl Schultz, Naperville Township Republican chairman, said the group chose to buck its recent trend of slating candidates through a caucus because a primary will allow all interested voters to get involved. “I think it’s a very positive move,” Naperville Township Supervisor Rachel Ossyra said. “It shows the organization’s commitment to transparency, accountability and ensuring all the voters have access.” With a caucus, state-mandated to take place during a gathering on a certain night, Schultz said “there’s a lot of people that are excluded — not maliciously, but by fact.” Military members or college students or anyone who happens to be out of town on caucus night wouldn’t be able to participate, Schultz said. Neither would anyone in the hospital or unable to access the caucus site. The decision comes at a time when Naperville Township is the subject of political discussions about government consolidation — either by managing road district operations through agreements with other entities or by potentially eliminating townships themselves. “Given some of the local issues regarding townships, we thought we should broaden (the candidate selection process) and make it as open to the entire community as possible,” Schultz said. “It gives voters the best opportunity to weigh in on what’s going on.” What’s going on, Schultz and Ossyra say, is really a discussion about “modernizing government.” The discussion could mean more people will want to be involved as candidates. If there is broader interest, Naperville Township Highway Commissioner Stan Wojtasiak said hosting a primary is a good move. (FROM THE ARTICLE: House and Senate lawmakers Monday called for changes to federal hiring practices that appear to be fostering political favoritism in the Obama administration, by making it too easy for political appointees to become career federal workers. A new report issued by the Government Accountability Office found that out of 69 cases in the Obama administration where federal appointees were able to convert political jobs to career federal service positions, a quarter of those hires “did not follow proper procedures intended to prevent improper political favoritism.” The process of political appointees converting their appointments into career positions is known as burrowing. “The nonpartisan watchdog’s findings that one out of every four political appointees who burrowed into the executive branch during this administration did not follow the rules is deeply troubling,” House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton, R-Mich., said in a statement. “One of the reasons the federal government has laws on merit-based hiring is to prevent cronyism and political favoritism,” said Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation Chairman John Thune, R-S.D. “GAO’s finding that the Obama administration hasn’t consistently followed these rules is troubling.” The GAO found that among the 30 agencies reviewed, 28 reported “converting 69 individuals from political to career positions from January 1, 2010, to October 1, 2015,” and among those, 17 were hired without required review by the Office of Personnel Management. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois sent a Republican to the US Senate in 2010. Mark Kirk won in an otherwise solidly Democratic state by positioning himself as a unique brand of Republican. Voters saw him as a courageously pragmatic voice, a counterbalance to the extremism sweeping the GOP elsewhere in the country. Senator Kirk has been a bitter disappointment, slipping into the timid habits of the party’s other moderates. Now Illinois voters are about to bring him home. Sending Mark Kirk to the Senate has accomplished nothing for Illinois other than to empower outrageous characters like Ted Cruz and Jim Inhofe. When Senator Ted Cruz held the entire country hostage to his filibuster of a budget compromise, how did Kirk protect his constituents? By sitting in the background, waiting for a green light from Senate Republican leadership to end the filibuster. Kirk did nothing to mobilize opposition to Cruz’s goals or tactics and never opposed him publicly. Like other reasonable Republicans in Washington, he kept his head down, missing every opportunity to rally sane, pragmatic Republicans into a relevant power bloc. When Senator Rand Paul organized a bizarre, paranoia-laden rant of a filibuster to halt the appointment of the CIA Director, Illinois voters might have expected their Senator speak up for their interests against the “whacko bird” caucus. Instead, Kirk brought Senator Paul a snack. Contrary to popular belief, the Republican Party still retains a core of solid citizens with the country’s best interests at heart. Many of those Republicans, like Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Rob Portman, occupy positions from which they could affect change in the party. Unfortunately, sensible Republicans have consistently been spineless in the face of opposition from the party’s fringes. Elect a reasonable figure like Mark Kirk and he will meekly place every ounce of his (your) power and influence in the service of the carnival barkers at the party’s extremes. Speaking to audiences in Illinois, Kirk has been proud to support immigration reform. In Washington, silence. In Illinois, Kirk has claimed to embrace scientists’ positions on climate change. In Washington when he could have taken a stand that mattered, he blinked. Facing friendly audiences in Illinois Kirk admits to being pro-choice. When he gets to Washington his pro-choice credentials are hidden in some obscure Senate closet, only taken out be used on votes with no consequence. Kirk has refused to support Donald Trump, but like almost every other prominent Republican he has done so quietly and ineffectively, in a manner calculated to deliver the weakest impact. On issue after issue, Kirk lines up with Illinois voters until he leaves the state. In the face of opposition from other Republicans in Washington, Kirk takes the safe route. Blind to the irony, Kirk has made “courage” the signature of his campaign for re-election. His remarkable recovery from a stroke, which features at the center of his campaign message, makes his Senate record all the more awkward. Kirk struggled back to health in the face of  paralysis, eventually scaling several flights of stairs in the Willis Tower in a remarkable demonstration of grit and determination. Clearly the man possesses a powerful well of courage. Where was that steely force when Illinois voters needed it? Kirk will claim that he’s been courageous in taking a stand with Democratic Senator Menendez to impose sanctions on Iran. What courage does that take exactly? What powerful, well-funded lobby supports Iran in Washington? In Washington, “taking on Iran” is about as courageous as taunting an asthmatic kid on the playground. It would take actual courage for a Republican Senator to champion a rational response to climate change or gun violence. That is the force Illinois voters thought Kirk would bring to bear on their behalf in the Senate. Instead, Kirk has trained his courage on a politically impotent force, one of the least popular countries on the planet. Kirk has reserved his courage for political targets that won’t fight back. In private, sensible Republicans who occupy influential positions in Washington will claim that they are doing all they can. They will claim that they are carefully picking their battles. Climate change, immigration reform, and restructuring the tax code are issues they would like to push forward, but the party at the national level is not ready for sound solutions. These timid moderates are right about the party’s serious problems. Their complicity is making the party’s sickness more severe. Sensible figures like Susan Collins and Mark Kirk have come to play a toxic, enabling role in the GOP’s descent into madness. Their placid party loyalty lends credibility to outlandish characters like Louie Gohmert, Ted Cruz, Steve King and Donald Trump. Republican leaders like Kirk cannot continue to evade responsibility for the extremism they legitimize. Until someone in the Republican Party is willing to take a visible, courageous stand for sanity in the style of John McCain circa 2000, there is no reason to keep electing them. Any vote for a supposedly “sane” or “reasonable” Republican unwilling to confront the party’s extremes is a vote for those extremes. Electing Mark Kirk is a mistake Illinois voters are unlikely to repeat.)
