WJBD RADIO
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Illegals and their supporters say “We are here to stay.” In my opinion, it is a crime to come to America illegally, to stay in America illegally, and to bring others to America illegally. In my opinion, it is a crime to encourage people to come to America illegally, to stay in America illegally, and to bring others to America illegally.  If legal and illegal immigration were as high during the 1960s as it is today, I doubt that I would have gotten the jobs that did doing yard work, delivering newspapers, washing dishes, cleaning golf shoes, chipping slag, pumping gasoline, and delivering mail. If legal and illegal immigration were as high during the 1970s as it is today, I doubt that I would have gotten the jobs that did working on an automobile assemble line, working as a security guard, selling tires, automotive services, and major appliances, pumping gasoline, and collecting delinquent taxes. If legal and illegal immigration were as high during the 1980s as it is today, I doubt that I would have gotten the job that did auditing federal agencies.  My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout that all the jobs that I had were bad jobs, but nevertheless, jobs that should be given to immigrants.)

ABC NEWS
— Pay Gap Between College Grads and Everyone Else at a Record – CHRISTOPHER S. RUGABER  (DIERSEN: In 1970, Firestone Stores would not have offered me a job if I had not had a bachelor’s degree in business. In 1971, Oldsmobile and IRS would not have offered me a job if I had not had a bachelor’s degree in business. In 1972, 1973, and 1974, IRS might not have promoted me if I had not been taking graduate business classes.  In 1980, GAO would not have offered me a job if I had not had an MBA and if I had not passed the CPA examination. The Democrats who ran GAO would have succeeded in getting rid of me even sooner than they did if I had not earned a master’s degree in accounting in 1980, passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination in 1981, became a licensed CPA in 1981, became a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, became a Certified Government Financial Manager in 1994, became a Certified Financial Services Auditor in 1996, and became Forensic Accountant in 1997 and if I had not earned a master’s degree in financial markets and trading in 1997.)

— A wall isn’t “the” answer to our immigration problem – TOM TANCREDO
http://www.denverpost.com/2017/01/14/a-wall-isnt-the-answer-to-our-immigration-problems/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The answer is called E-Verify, an internet-based system for verifying legal work status, the infrastructure for which already exists. It’s is a program operated by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services bureau of the Department of Homeland Security. In less than one minute, any employer can use it to verify the legal status of the person seeking employment. Today it is a voluntary program used by over a half-million private sector employers that do not rely on illegal labor. We can halt probably 95 percent of unlawful hiring of illegal labor if E-Verify is made mandatory for all employers except those using a legal guest worker program to obtain temporary employees. But here’s the really scary part to my former colleagues: once in place, it is largely self-enforcing and does not depend on an army of immigration agents doing on-site inspections of paper records. It works, and that’s why it is so vigorously opposed. Mandatory E-verify will reduce illegal immigration dramatically. If we remove the magnet of jobs, far fewer people try to enter illegally, and once fully implemented, most of those already here will be forced to return home and start on a legal path of entry into the United States.)

DAILY HERALD
— Why millennials are worse off than Baby Boomers – AP  (DIERSEN: What about the draft? Millennials have never been subject to the draft. I was subject to the draft, that is, I was draft bait, 1966-1971. Employers did not want to hire those who are subject to the draft.  My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that if I had not avoided the draft with student draft deferments 1966-1970 and a financial hardship draft deferment 1970-1971, I never would have been able to a) graduate from NIU debt-free in 1970, earn an MBA from Loyola in 1976, earn a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, etc., b) get job offers from the Post Office in 1966, from Firestone Stores in 1970, from Oldsmobile and IRS in 1971, and from GAO in 1980, c) pass the CPA examination in 1979, pass the Certified Internal Auditor examination in 1981, become a licensed CPA in 1981, etc., d) buy new cars in 1966, 1967, 1968, 1971, 1978, etc., e) buy a new town home in 1972, a studio condo in 1974, a one bedroom condo in 1976, f) get married in 1978, g) buy a home in Wheaton with my wife in 1978, h) etc.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20170113/business/170119480/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With a median household income of $40,581, millennials earn 20 percent less than boomers did at the same stage of life, despite being better educated, according to a new analysis of Federal Reserve data by the advocacy group Young Invincibles. The analysis being released Friday gives concrete details about a troubling generational divide that helps to explain much of the anxiety that defined the 2016 election. Millennials have half the net worth of boomers. Their homeownership rate is lower, while their student debt is drastically higher. The generational gap is a central dilemma for the incoming presidency of Donald Trump, who essentially pledged a return to the prosperity of post-World War II America. The analysis also hints at the issues of culture and identity that divided many voters, showing that white millennials — who still earn much more than their blacks and Latino peers — have seen their incomes plummet the most relative to boomers. . .The analysis of the Fed data shows the extent of the decline. It compared 25 to 34 year-olds in 2013, the most recent year available, to the same age group in 1989 after adjusting for inflation. Education does help boost incomes. But the median college-educated millennial with student debt is only earning slightly more than a baby boomer without a degree did in 1989. The homeownership rate for this age group dipped to 43 percent from 46 percent in 1989, although the rate has improved for millennials with a college degree relative to boomers. The median net worth of millennials is $10,090, 56 percent less than it was for boomers. Whites still earn dramatically more than Blacks and Latinos, reflecting the legacy of discrimination for jobs, education and housing. Yet compared to white baby boomers, some white millennials appear stuck in a pattern of downward mobility. This group has seen their median income tumble more than 21 percent to $47,688. Median income for black millennials has fallen just 1.4 percent to $27,892. Latino millennials earn nearly 29 percent more than their boomer predecessors to $30,436. The analysis fits into a broader pattern of diminished opportunity. Research last year by economists led by Stanford University’s Raj Chetty found that people born in 1950 had a 79 percent chance of making more money than their parents. That figure steadily slipped over the past several decades, such that those born in 1980 had just a 50 percent chance of out-earning their parents. This decline has occurred even though younger Americans are increasingly college-educated. The proportion of 25 to 29 year-olds with a college degree has risen to 35.6 percent in 2015 from 23.2 percent in 1990, a report this month by the Brookings Institution noted. The declining fortunes of millennials could impact boomers who are retired or on the cusp of retirement. Payroll taxes from millennials helps to finance the Social Security and Medicare benefits that many boomers receive — programs that Trump has said won’t be subject to spending cuts. And those same boomers will need younger generations to buy their homes and invest in the financial markets to protect their own savings. “The challenges that young adults face today could forecast the challenges that we see down the road,” said Tom Allison, deputy policy and research director at Young Invincibles.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It suggested Illinois will remain an underperformer in the region thanks to manufacturing struggles and the state’s poor finances. The joint report with Moody’s Analytics said Illinois is the Midwest’s weakest link. With soft job creation, a decreasing labor force, continued manufacturing slump and population losses, the report said the state must navigate its fiscal challenges without doing lasting damage to its business climate. The COGFA/Moody’s report said Illinois is the only state in the region where no metro area has entered the expansion phase of the business cycle. Four metro areas — Elgin, Danville, Decatur and Kankakee — have recoveries that are at risk of coming undone. Four other areas are in recession: Bloomington, Carbondale, Peoria and the Quad Cities. “An uncomfortably high share of state residents are unemployed, underemployed or discouraged workers,” according to the report. It also said that, at 11 percent, “the proportion of marginally attached and involuntary part-time workers in the labor force is the highest in the Midwest.” House Minority Leader Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, said the status quo is what’s hurting the middle class. “In the last three years, we have lost approximately 80,000 citizens,” he said. “We’ve lost 29,000 jobs over the last 16 years. I don’t call that standing up for the middle class. Is that protecting anyone? The numbers speak for themselves.” It’s possible to come back after a recession like neighboring states have, Durkin said, and he’s encouraged by Democrats recognizing the need for reforms to grow the economy.)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— Tax Report: Where Taxpayers Won Against the IRS – LAURA SAUNDERS  (DIERSEN: I won a split decision in tax court.  I worked for IRS 1971-1980 as a Revenue Officer, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels (currently $79,563-$90,173). In 1978, Money Magazine and my Democrat IRS superiors disallowed the graduate business courses at Loyola and the graduate accounting courses at DePaul that I had deducted.  I argued that IRS encouraged its Revenue Officers to take graduate business and accounting courses, that the courses related to my job duties, that the courses helped me carry out my job duties, that the courses did not qualify me for a “new trade or business,” and that I did not take the courses to get a job in private industry.  The tax court judge allowed the six business courses, but disallowed the seven accounting courses by wrongly ruling that they qualified me for a “new trade or business” because I planned to take and to pass the CPA examination.)
http://www.wsj.com/articles/tax-report-where-taxpayers-won-against-the-irs-1484327075
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Are you dreaming of taking the Internal Revenue Service to court? Your chances of winning may not be as bad as you think, and it isn’t crazy to represent yourself. These insights come from data compiled by National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson, who is charged with representing taxpayer interests before the IRS and Congress. Each year, Ms. Olson publishes a deep dive into the IRS’s civil litigation as part of her annual report to Congress, which was released this week. This year’s report analyzes results from 609 federal tax decisions on the most-litigated code sections for the 12 months ended May 31. Most of the cases were in Tax Court, a specialized forum devoted to taxpayer conflicts with the IRS.)

ILLINOIS FAMILY INSTITUTE
— Feds Are Simply Out-of-Touch – David E. Smith
https://illinoisfamily.org/marriage/feds-simply-touch/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently claimed in a press release that the cost of raising a child from birth through age 17 is $233,610, or almost $14,000 annually. As the father of seven children, let me say that this is utter nonsense. Moreover, the USDA fails to identify the multiple benefits of raising children, such as the physical, spiritual, intellectual and emotional advantages. These benefits are not just unquantifiable, but inestimable. The value of raising, nurturing and training children far surpass the outlandish financial estimates of Washington D.C. bureaucrats. With the USDA’s exaggerated estimates, how do we expect to encourage married couples to return to the healthy birth rate of more than 2.1 in the United States?  We’re shortsighted if we fail to see that the current U.S. trend is unsustainable and portends economic trouble, including lower living standards for most citizens. We simply have to look at Japan, Greece or Italy for a lesson in the detriments of low birth rates. Federal officials are simply out-of-touch with Middle America. Most of us don’t spend hundreds of dollars on a hammer and we spend far less than they estimate to raise our each child every year. Maybe the federal government can learn something from working families?)

However, Biden has big automotive plans upon leaving office. During VP Biden’s visit to the 2017 North American International Auto Show, he told reporters one of his first actions after exiting his current role will be to “Buy a Corvette.”  Biden was seen checking out numerous vehicle during the show and was greeted by Fiat-Chrysler Vice President Brian Harlow, Ford President and CEO Mark Fields and GM Executive Vice President Mark Reuss. But, it was Reuss’ team Biden was loving up on. The VP was seen sitting in numerous C7 Corvettes on the show floor, likely doing some window shopping at the same time.)

  1. LOUIS POST DISPATCH
    — Rep. William Lacy Clay returns controversial painting to Capitol wall, tries to file charges against colleague Duncan Hunter – Chuck Raasch
    http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/clay-returns-controversial-painting-to-capitol-wall-tries-to-file/article_005d92e8-20a3-513f-8e74-6457f650792f.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Clay also tried to file theft charges against that colleague, Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., although Capitol Police had not indicated to him late Tuesday morning whether they will follow through with Clay’s complaint. In a short address in a tunnel between the Capitol and House office buildings, Clay depicted the debate as part of the culture wars dividing the country. “This is really not about a student art competition anymore,” Clay, D-St. Louis, said after he and a handful of colleagues put it back on a wall amidst 400 other winners of a high school art contest sponsored by members of Congress. “It’s about defending the Constitution.” He said this just after passing Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., in the tunnel where the painting hangs. Hunter and Clay, who are good friends and whose congressional offices are next door to one another, didn’t speak to each other as they passed. Hunter, citing 18-year-old artist David Pulphus’s depiction of police as animals, which many have interpreted as pigs, said it was offensive. A scrum of about 15 reporters and photographers who had gathered around Hunter shifted to Clay, who led a handful of Congressional Black Caucus members in putting the painting back up where it originally was. It may not be there for good, however. Congressional Republicans are discussing removing it officially as a violation of congressional rules on the art that prevents the competition from depicting controversial “contemporary” issues. Clay said he’d defend the painting through that process as a First Amendment expression of an 18-year-old constituent. “I don’t have a disagreement with that,” he said of the process. “But there is a procedure to follow. You can’t have culture warriors walking around here like they are in charge of something.” Clay told reporters that he had no opinion on the painting, which police groups and others have criticized as depicting police as hog-like animals. Clay said critics should put themselves in Pulphus’s place, as a teenaged black male, who had witnessed the highly publicized shootings of young black men throughout his teen years. Including, “in his own community,” the shooting death of black teenager Michael Brown by Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson when Pulphus was 16. Those shootings, Clay said in an interview with the Post-Dispatch, were “animalistic.” While police groups have criticized the painting, Clay received a local police ally over the weekend in St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson. “Police officers are not art critics,” Dotson said during a discussion Saturday night at Harris-Stowe State University kicking off Missouri’s official events honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He called Clay a “strong supporter” of police and said Clay’s desire to hang the painting is in keeping with protecting the First Amendment. The painting by former Cardinal Ritter High School Senior Pulphus – now a college student – has drawn intense scrutiny after critics noticed that it depicted police officers as animals. Some police groups criticized the painting as divisive and not a true depiction of the shooting death of Michael Brown by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in 2014. Hunter removed the painting and left it in Clay’s office on Friday, saying it offended him and denigrated police. Hunter told the Post-Dispatch he had gotten “thousands” of calls and social media messages in support, many from police officers or their families. The painting was on display for six months before critics attacked it, in the middle of hundreds of other paintings by high school art contest winners from around the country. Clay Tuesday blamed “alt-right” media for stirring up the problem, and fellow Congressional Black Caucus members depicted the controversy as an extension of Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s attacks on the media. Hunter said he was making a statement and would not seek to remove it again if Clay puts it back up. But other Republicans, upset at the depiction of police, hinted they may seek official congressional action to take it down permanently. Clay would fight that. “I do not agree or disagree with this painting,” Clay said after he helped put it back up. But he noted that statues elsewhere in the Capitol depict slaveholders and avowed racists that offend him, but he hasn’t demanded they be removed. “I will fight to defend this young man’s right to express himself because his artwork is true for him and he is entitled to that protection under the law,” Clay said, referring to Pulphus. At the forum in St. Louis Saturday night, Dotson referred to the painting as the “elephant in the room.” “Sam Dotson can have an opinion and may not like the painting, but Sam Dotson the police chief or any police officer cannot have an opinion about it because that young man has a right to have his voice heard and it’s our job to make sure his rights are protected,” he said.)

— As Trump eyes Dodd-Frank, Chicago’s trading interests gear up for a battle – LYNNE MAREK  (DIERSEN: What do you know about swaps?  In 1997, I knew as much about swaps as anyone at GAO.  GAO audits federal financial industry regulators.  All during my last 8 years at GAO, I worked on audits that involved swaps.  In addition, I earned a master’s degree from IIT in financial markets and trading in 1997.  GAO wasted my knowledge of swaps when it forced me to retire in 1997.  GAO would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a woman, younger, or a veteran.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170107/ISSUE01/301079996/as-trump-eyes-dodd-frank-chicago-derivatives-biz-gears-up-for-fight
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For all the Trump team talk about gutting President Barack Obama’s landmark financial law, Chicago’s trading community is wagering that at least part of it will stick: swaps reform. Swaps were a villain in the Great Recession, and Obama’s 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform & Consumer Protection Act pushed them from clubby, private bank transactions onto public platforms. There they became a welcome addition to the Chicago trading world. President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming team has vowed to dismantle the law, but Chicago’s trading interests won’t easily give up the companies, products and venues created after Wall Street banks’ grip on the swaps market was loosened. Financial exchanges like CME Group and trading firms such as Citadel have generated tens of millions of dollars in new swaps business, and they’ll be reluctant to let go of the new infrastructure built on Dodd-Frank’s Title VII, which set up a framework for the regulation of swaps markets. “People now are getting used to the standards,” says Brian Liston, co-founder and president of Seed CX, which launched a new Chicago swaps trading platform. “They should really change Title VII slowly if they have to, and ultimately I don’t think they’re going to.” Swaps are financial shorthand for arrangements in which parties agree to swap the risk associated with financial contracts tied to underlying values, like interest rates. In the 2008 financial crisis, those privately negotiated deals in the subprime mortgage market blew up and swamped major institutions with defaults.)

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2017/01/08/out-work-six-months-more-heres-why-you-cant-find-job/96224280/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Carl Van Horn, director of the Heidrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University, rattles off the roadblocks faced by the long-term unemployed including having to explain large gaps on a resume and age discrimination. In 2015, about 36% of the long-term unemployed were 55 or older, Labor Department figures show. And some have seen their skills atrophy or have succumbed to depression, alcoholism or drug abuse, Van Horn says. Such issues historically have plagued long-idled workers. A big difference nowadays, he says, is that some of the nearly 9 million workers who lost jobs in the recession have yet to find work, or retire, and continue to drift in and out of the labor force, searching for jobs sporadically. About 5.5 million Americans are not in the labor force – and so not counted among the unemployed – but still want a job now, up from 4.3 million before the recession, the Labor Department says.  Simply put, Van Horn says, the occasional job searches by those laid off in the downturn creates more competition for jobs among the long-term unemployed.)

BLOOMINGTON PANTAGRAPH
— Sanguinetti speaks at Hispanic festival about American dream – Roger Miller (DIERSEN: When did the lights in your life turn on? My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would hint/imply/argue/shout that they never came on for me.  They would stress a) that my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,459 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980, b) that my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims, and c) that my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests.)
http://www.pantagraph.com/news/state-and-regional/illinois/government-and-politics/sanguinetti-speaks-at-hispanic-festival-about-american-dream/article_a912d43e-2431-5ec1-9e12-250588fd91af.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Evelyn Sanguinetti, Illinois’ first Latina lieutenant governor, spoke at a Hispanic festival Friday about her own life as the daughter of immigrants and how education is the key to a better life. “The American dream is alive and it is incumbent upon all of us to create the environment to make it happen,” she told reporters at the celebration of Three Kings’ Day at Western Avenue Community Center, Bloomington. Blending Spanish and English in brief remarks to the audience of about 70 children and adults, Sanguinetti spoke of her mother, a 15-year-old Cuban refugee, and her Ecuadorian immigrant father. They worked hard to give her a good life but money was tight in her native Hialeah, Fla., she said. She said her mother, whom she described as her “shero,” told her, “In this country, you’ll always be able to rise like the foam.” She said she was an “uninspired” student in grade school, but her love and talent for the piano won her a place at The New World School of the Arts in Miami. “That’s when all the lights in my life turned on,” said Sanguinetti, who eventually earned a law degree. She said she and Gov. Bruce Rauner believe all Illinois children deserve the opportunity that comes from a first-class education. To help make that possible, Illinois must have a “complete, comprehensive, balanced budget” and a business environment free of “punitive” regulations that spurs growth and keeps jobs in the state, she told reporters.)

POSITIVELY NAPERVILLE
— WARRENVILLE, NAPERVILLE, WOODRIDGE, AND LISLE MAYORS TO HOLD JOINT PRESS CONFERENCE MONDAY IN WHEATON  (DIERSEN: Just kidding, but when will petitions be circulated for Cook County to annex DuPage and the other collar counties?)
http://www.positivelynaperville.com/2017/01/06/warrenville-naperville-woodridge-lisle-mayors-hold-joint-press-conference-monday/68849
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At the bottom of the Daily Herald story (Jan. 5, 2016), find this commentary from Stan Zegel, Executive Director at Citizen Participation Institute in Winfield where he states a referendum would be binding. It appears the petitions are invoking a procedure established by state law 65 ILCS 5/7-1-16 whereby 250 electors in a municipality (a village or a city) can cause a referendum like this to be held. It is a binding referendum. It further appears that no such referendum is necessary in the acquiring municipality. That explains why no petitions have been circulated in Naperville. If the voters in a particular municipality vote against it, then it cannot be submitted again in that municipality until at least 22 months later, and then it will take it will take far more than 250 signatures to put it on the ballot again in that municipality. If it passes in any municipality, then that place automatically becomes part of Naperville. Any bonded indebtedness of an approving municipality, and of Naperville, get merged together and everyone shares in paying off the combined debt. Thus the taxpayers in Lisle, Woodridge, Warrenville (if the annexation is approved in their municipality) would take on a share of Naperville’s debt, and Naperville taxpayers would take on a share the other places’ debt. It follows that, with everything then part of Naperville, Naperville’s ordinances are in effect throughout the combined area, and everyone can then elect the mayor and members of the Naperville City Council as their terms come up in 2019 and after.)

If legal and illegal immigration was as high during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s as it is now, immigrants may very well have gotten the jobs that I did doing yard work, delivering newspapers, washing dishes, cleaning golf shoes, chipping slag, pumping gasoline, delivering mail, working on an automobile assembly line, working as a security guard, selling tires, automotive services, and major appliances, collecting delinquent taxes, and auditing federal agencies. Immigration advocates, their operatives, and their dupes look down on me, despise me, if not hate me for taking jobs that immigrants could have had.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: What happens to federal employees when a new president shakes things up? Do they stay or do they go? A new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research looks at this trend and sorts government workers into one of three categories. The study, “Elections, Ideology and Turnover in the U.S. Federal Government,” comes from three political science professors: Alexander Bolton of Emory University, John M. de Figueiredo of Duke University and David Lewis of Vanderbilt University. They looked at Office of Personnel Management data spanning 1988 and 2011 and developed departure models to run against it.
