From what I see, virtually all of them are Democrats. Political affiliation discrimination is rampant in the federal government. (FROM THE ARTICLE: President-elect Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress are drawing up plans to take on the government bureaucracy they have long railed against, by eroding job protections and grinding down benefits that federal workers have received for a generation. Hiring freezes, an end to automatic raises, a green light to fire poor performers, a ban on union business on the government’s dime and less generous pensions – these are the contours of the blueprint emerging under Republican control of Washington in January. These changes were once unthinkable to federal employees, their unions and their supporters in Congress. But Trump’s election as an outsider promising to shake up a system he told voters is awash in “waste, fraud and abuse” has conservatives optimistic that they could do now what Republicans have been unable to do in the 133 years since the civil service was created. “You have the country moving to the right and being much more anti-Washington than it was,” said former House speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., a leading Trump adviser who serves on the president-elect’s transition team. “We’re going to have to get the country to understand how big the problem is, the human costs of it and why it’s absolutely essential to reform,” said Gingrich, who urged Trump to shrink big government and overhaul the “job-for-life” guarantee of federal work. Gingrich predicted that Stephen Bannon, a former Breitbart News chief who helped steer Trump’s campaign and is now one of his most influential advisers, would lead the effort. “It’s a big, big project,” he said. The project aligns with Bannon’s long-stated warnings about the corrupting influence of government and a capital city rampant with “crony capitalism.” Breitbart headlines also provide a possible insight into his views, with federal employees described as overpaid, too numerous and a “privileged class.” “Number of Government Employees Now Surpasses Manufacturing Jobs by 9,977,000,” the website proclaimed in November. There are 2.1 million federal civilian employees. Top Republicans on Capitol Hill say their first priority will be making it easier to fire employees regarded as incompetent or who break the rules. “It’s nearly impossible to fire somebody,” said Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. “When the overwhelming majority do a good job and the one bad apple is there viewing pornography, I want people to be held accountable.” Chaffetz said he plans to push through wholesale changes to the generous retirement benefits that federal workers receive, by shifting to a market-driven, 401(k)-style plan for new employees.)

BuzzFeed claimed its investigation of fake news found 38 percent of posts shared from three large right-wing politics pages on Facebook included “false or misleading information,” while three large left-wing pages did so less than 20 percent of the time. Buzzfeed added that it found 140 fake news sites from Macedonia that supported Trump. According to a new report from Gizmodo, Facebook took “steps to suppress fake news earlier this year,” despite knowing it would have “disproportionately impacted right-wing news sites by downgrading or removing that content from people’s feeds.” But Facebook backed-off the move after Breitbart News reported in May that former Facebook contractors said they had “routinely suppressed conservative-oriented news articles from the trending news section.” The contractors specifically highlighted preventing “organically trending” posts on Facebook’s highly-influential News Feed section from conservatives reporting about Mitt Romney, Rand Paul, and the huge 2016 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), which attracted 30,000 attendees. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg first denied any knowledge of “bias” against conservatives. But he was forced to admit some former Facebook employees that curated content might “unintentionally” have been biased against conservatives, after the revelations sparked a Senate Commerce Committee probe of News Feed. To counter progressive workforce “biases,” Facebook took the extraordinary step of firing all News Feed curators and agreeing to stop allowing the liberal New York Times, CNN, NBC News, Washington Post and BuzzFeed to dominate News Feed postings. Google and Facebook have had strict policies, using a combination of algorithms and human moderation, to decide whether a site is eligible to use its advertising service. But that tactic has mostly been used to deny pornographic websites from collecting click advertising dollars. But with the visibility of the election over, Google has stated that it has updated its AdSense “policy” to ban sites that “misrepresent, misstate, or conceal information.” Websites that do not comply with this rule will be banned from using Google AdSense. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Despite not hosting a presidential candidate since 1992, Wheaton College has a rich history of hosting, producing and gaining support from prominent political leaders since its foundation by Jonathan Blanchard — who once ran for president himself — in 1860. Of all of Wheaton’s renowned visitors, perhaps the most impressive are the nine presidential candidates who visited Wheaton’s campus between 1960 and 1992. The first was Richard M. Nixon, the Vice President and 1960 Republican presidential candidate at the time. Nixon appeared at a rally on McCully field and, according to the Wheaton College Archives, encouraged the crowd to “strengthen the faith of America” and “see that young people grow up with faith in God.” Nixon later won the presidency. President Jimmy Carter was the last president to visit Wheaton. He delivered the February 1992 LeRoy H. Pfund Lecture. Other visitors with presidential aspirations included Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress, 1964 Republican candidate Barry Goldwater, 1972 Democratic candidate George McGovern, President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush and the Reverend Jesse Jackson. Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan, a populist Democrat who ran for president in 1896, 1900 and 1908, was also a guest of Wheaton. Most recently, 2012 Republican Vice Presidential and current Speaker of the House Paul Ryan gave a speech at a Wheaton breakfast in spring of 2015. Many alumni have also gone on to become recognized public figures. Disgraced ex-Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert was a 1964 graduate. At one point, Hastert served in Congress alongside three other Wheaton graduates: Republican Indiana Senator Dan Coats ’65, Republican Michigan Representative Paul B. Henry ’63 and Democratic Washington Representative Jim McDermott ’58. Other alumni in politics include Michael Gerson ’86, chief speechwriter for President George W. Bush who helped write Bush’s memorable post-9/11 speeches. More infamously, David R. Young Jr. ’59 was a special assistant at the National Security Council in the Nixon Administration. Young co-founded the White House Special Investigations Unit — known as “The Plumbers” — known for breaking into a psychiatry office and later attempting to break into the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate complex, instigating the Watergate scandal. Additionally, several public figures have supported Wheaton financially in the past as Trustees. Owen Lovejoy was a founding Trustee of Wheaton College, U.S. Congressman and friend of Abraham Lincoln. A scholarship was later presented in his name. Another trustee, Salmon P. Chase, was a Senator, governor of Ohio, Secretary of the Treasury and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Chase was the great-great uncle of Wheaton’s sixth president and the great-great-great uncle of Ken Chase, current chair of the Communication department at Wheaton. He is also the face of the $10,000 bill. David Iglesias, current director of the Wheaton Center for Faith, Politics and Economics and professor of politics and law, graduated from Wheaton in 1980. In 2001, Iglesias was appointed the U.S. State Attorney for the District of New Mexico under the Bush administration. He also served in the U.S. Navy in 2008 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom as a terrorism and war crimes prosecutor and has held various other national and state positions. Iglesias said Wheaton helped prepare him for public service in three ways: “It gave me the confidence to speak in public; it gave me the Biblical basis for getting involved in the political process; it helped me organize my thoughts and ensure I was focusing on facts, not arguments.” Politics and international relations department chair and associate professor of politics Bryan McGraw said Wheaton tries to “prepare all of our students to exercise leadership in whatever field they choose to go into.” Specifically, Wheaton equips aspiring political leaders to use the gifts given to them to effect justice worldwide, according to McGraw. “We would hope that Wheaton graduates — and Christians more broadly — would be more likely to grasp that call clearly and have the freedom and courage to put it into effect.”)

The Naperville Township Republican Organization decided to hold a primary next year instead of a caucus to choose candidates for positions before the April 4 election. Seats included in the primary are for supervisor, clerk, assessor, highway commissioner and four township trustees. Carl Schultz, Naperville Township Republican chairman, said the group chose to buck its recent trend of slating candidates through a caucus because a primary will allow all interested voters to get involved. “I think it’s a very positive move,” Naperville Township Supervisor Rachel Ossyra said. “It shows the organization’s commitment to transparency, accountability and ensuring all the voters have access.” With a caucus, state-mandated to take place during a gathering on a certain night, Schultz said “there’s a lot of people that are excluded — not maliciously, but by fact.” Military members or college students or anyone who happens to be out of town on caucus night wouldn’t be able to participate, Schultz said. Neither would anyone in the hospital or unable to access the caucus site. The decision comes at a time when Naperville Township is the subject of political discussions about government consolidation — either by managing road district operations through agreements with other entities or by potentially eliminating townships themselves. “Given some of the local issues regarding townships, we thought we should broaden (the candidate selection process) and make it as open to the entire community as possible,” Schultz said. “It gives voters the best opportunity to weigh in on what’s going on.” What’s going on, Schultz and Ossyra say, is really a discussion about “modernizing government.” The discussion could mean more people will want to be involved as candidates. If there is broader interest, Naperville Township Highway Commissioner Stan Wojtasiak said hosting a primary is a good move.
