(FROM THE ARTICLE:  Two Illinois Republican state reps are very concerned about the immigration law enforcement measure Illinois Republican Governor Bruce Rauner signed into law Monday. State Reps. John Cabello (R-Rockford) and David McSweeney (R-Barrington) filed a measure Wednesday that would repeal a new law banning law enforcement in Illinois from stopping persons suspected of being in the U.S. illegally. “I swore to uphold the U.S. and Illinois Constitutions when I became a legislator,” Cabello told Illinois Review Wednesday. “As a member of law enforcement, I took a vow to uphold the law. I believe and trust in those oaths, and intend to do all I can to keep them.” The law many are referring to as the “sanctuary law” says law enforcement “shall not” detain or continue to detain any individual solely on the basis of any immigration detainer or non-judicial immigration warrant. Law enforcement “shall not” stop or arrest anyone solely based on the person’s immigration or citizenship status. They are, however, not banned from implementing a “valid” judge-issued federal warrant concerning any suspects. That is the definition of a sanctuary law, Cabello bill co-sponsor David McSweeney told Illinois Review. He pointed to Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ office comments on the law. “As the Attorney General has said, when cities and states refuse to help enforce immigration laws, our nation is less safe,” DOG spokesman Devin O’Malley told Fox News. “Failure to deport aliens who are convicted for criminal offenses puts whole communities at risk – especially immigrant communities in the very sanctuary jurisdictions that seek to protect the perpetrators.” The attorney general’s views were totally disregarded in a missive sent out by the Illinois Republican Party chairman Tim Schneider and County Chairman Association President Randy Pollard Monday night after Rauner signed the bill into law in front of an enthusiastic Latino audience in Chicago. “I think it is important that people know what Attorney General Sessions thinks about SB 31. Tim Schneider, the chief cheerleader for the ‘Capitol Compromise’ massive tax hike is now presenting more ‘alternative facts,'” McSweeney said. Cabello said lawmakers are supposed to do what’s best for those that are bearing the financial burden for decisions they make at the capitol. Not doing so will ultimately create consequences that political parties may not want, such as the base simply staying home in 2018. “People are telling me they’re so fed up with the party leaders and the governor that they’re just not going to go to the polls in 2018. That’s the opposite of what they should do,” Cabello, who co-chaired the Trump campaign in Illinois, said. “They need their voices to be heard loud and clear. Staying home is not an option.” Only one Republican House member – Bob Pritchard – voted in support of SB 31 on the House floor. Four Republicans – McConchie, McConnaughay, Nybo and Radogno – supported it in the Illinois Senate. Cabello and McSweeney’s repeal bill is HB 4091.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Tokenism, as an adjective defined by Webster’s Dictionary, is an act merely simulated, of slight or no account. As a noun, it is an act of accommodation to a demand by slight and merely formal concessions. For Democrats in Cook County, August’s slatemaking for their 2018 ticket was both a noun and an adjective, particularly regarding white men. Of the 16 candidates endorsed by the party for countywide offices, including judges, a grand total of three are while males, or about 18 percent. In the Democratic Party, men have hit the proverbial “glass ceiling.” Having a white man on the ticket is now of slight or no account. Of the remaining 13, seven are black, of which four are black women. That’s 44 percent. Seven are women. That’s another 44 percent. And two are Hispanics. That’s just 12 percent. As a noun, every key Democratic constituency got more than token accommodation. White males are no longer a key constituency. As expected, the Big Three – County Board president Toni Preckwinkle, House Speaker and state Democratic chairman Mike Madigan, and Alderman Ed Burke (14th) – did the dictating, with Burke picking the judges, and the 50 city and 30 suburban committeemen did the capitulating. Preckwinkle is expanding her empire exponentially, and is at the top of the heap. In the 2016 cycle, Preckwinkle engineered the slating of her county aide, Kim Foxx, for state’s attorney. She easily beat incumbent Anita Alvarez in the primary. She also worked with Madigan, dispatching another aide, Juliana Stratton, to run against independent-minded Ken Dunkin, who had the temerity to defy Madigan on several Illinois House votes. With a flood of Madigan money, Stratton buried Dunkin, and Madigan got another ally in Springfield. Now Preckwinkle and Madigan have worked again, plunking Stratton on J.B. Pritzker’s ticket for lieutenant governor in the March 2018 primary, and then delivering an endorsement of Pritzker for governor. Crafting a Pritzker-Stratton ticket sealed the deal, and Preckwinkle delivered all the black committeemen at slatemaking. And finally, another former Preckwinkle aide, Kim du Buclet, now a state representative, got slated for the 2-year Metropolitan Water Reclamation District term, beating a Hispanic backed by state Representative Luis Arroyo (D-3), and a longtime insider and donor associated with the North Shore Realtors. In the slating for county clerk, a job David Orr is relinquishing after 28 years, Recorder Karen Yarbrough, who is black and a Madigan protege, was slated. For Preckwinkle, despite the soda tax snafu, it’s “Veni, vidi, vici” – “I came, I saw, I conquered.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There used to be a time when Republicans stood for certain non-negotiables — free markets, lower taxes, limited governments and yes, law and order at the borders. Then came Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner. And all the Republicans go — whaat? The Republican — repeat, Republican — governor just signed a bill into law limiting the ability of police to work with feds on immigration. Specifically, the new law “prohibits police from searching, arresting or detaining someone solely because of immigration status, or because of so-called federal immigration detainers,” ABC News reported. Local authorities ostensibly can still contact federal immigration folk and hold illegals in jail cells if there’s a criminal warrant for their arrest on file. But come on, now. What Rauner really signed was a sanctuary bill. He can spin it however he wants — and boy, did he. His side argues the bill is far from a sanctuary measure because it still allows for communication between locals and feds, and it makes clear the state has to abide federal law. But that’s smoke and mirrors. The fact that the language is nebulous enough to be having the debate over whether it’s sanctuary or not is proof in itself that it’s sanctuary enough to be interpreted by any leftists at the local levels — the first responders on law enforcement — as permission to protect and shield illegals. “This took months and months of difficult negotiations,” he said, during the highly touted, highly celebratory bill signing, complete with mariachi ban performances and speeches. “[But it helps Illinois] continuing to be a welcome state.” Welcoming state — that’s code for Hey Illegal, Come Here. It’s the language Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel uses when he insists his city will stay a welcome refuge for illegals, no matter what President Donald Trump does in terms of border crackdowns. It’s the defiant rhetoric New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio screams when he symbolically middle-fingers the White House on immigration controls. But Emanuel and de Blasio are Democrats — so yeah, that’s what they do. Flout the law and flaunt their progressive-socialist-globalist selves. Rauner? Once more, for the people in the back of the room: he’s a Republican. Go back to Paragraph One, the part where it says Republicans are supposed to stand for law and order — “republic” is in the name, for crying out loud — not democratic wispy-winded will of the mob. Did Rauner not get the manual? Illinois may be heavy on the Democrats, and Rauner may simply be trying to do some good ol’ fashioned politicking to save his poll numbers. But stepping toward Democrats on border security is not a winning platform. And hey now, lookie here — Rauner is indeed up for re-election in 2018. From Politico, December 2016: “Illinois Gov. Rauner drops $50 million into 2018 reelection bid.” Seems he’s trying to walk both paths, simultaneously — Democratic and Republican. What a perfect time for a primary candidate to emerge.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Republican National Committee is expected to approve a resolution condemning racism and white supremacy at its summer meeting in Nashville — but don’t call it a rebuke of President Trump. “This has nothing to do with the president,” said the resolution’s sponsor, New Jersey RNC committeeman Bill Palatucci. “This is the RNC saying that racism and bigotry have no place in America.” Palatucci, an attorney who served as general counsel to Trump’s presidential transition committee, said that he began drafting the resolution on August 13, the day after a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville ended with the murder of a counterprotester. “The core issue was for us as RNC members to clearly and loudly denounce white supremacists,” explained Palatucci. “There can be no hesitation for the Party of Lincoln.” The resolution itself makes no mention of Trump or the president’s multiple reactions to Charlottesville, which led to three presidential advisory councils being disbanded as their members quit in protest. Instead, it states that “the racist beliefs of Nazis, the KKK, white supremacists and others are completely inconsistent with the Republican Party’s platform,” and urges that “swift and certain justice be meted out to domestic terrorists.” Most of the remaining text focuses on the history of the party, and the need for colorblind policy and politics. “We recall that the Republican Party was founded in the struggle against slavery and a rejection of the racial beliefs underlying the institution of slavery,” the resolution reads. “The Republican Party subsequently led the fight to assure all human beings have equal standing before the law, promoting instead the foundational idea that each person be judged as an individual on merit and not on the color of skin or other circumstance of birth.” The RNC’s resolution nonetheless breaks from the president by condemning white nationalists specifically and not dovetailing into criticism of the left. It’s the latest of several Republican responses that have taken that tone, but have often been buried by coverage of the president. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel gave the party’s first official response to Charlottesville at an ill-timed August 14 event in Detroit designed to demonstrate the party’s ongoing outreach to black voters. “White supremacy, neo-Nazi, KKK and hate speech and bigotry are not welcome and [do] not have a home in the Republican Party,” McDaniel told reporters, as black Republicans waited for a closed-press roundtable to begin. “This isn’t a partisan issue. This is an American issue.” Over the next 10 days, Republicans in every state fended off questions about the president’s markedly different response to Charlottesville — condemning violence on “many sides,” attacking the “alt-left,” and occasionally being congratulated by white nationalist leaders for his tone. It was agonizing for Republicans who had tried, before Trump, to broaden the party’s appeal to non-white voters. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), the highest profile black Republican in Congress, told Vice News that Trump’s “moral authority” had been compromised by his Charlottesville response. Michael Steele, who as the first black RNC chairman had apologized for the GOP’s racial politics, said after Charlottesville that his party was making a grave error by defending Trump. “In 2009, I declared the Southern Strategy of the GOP was dead. It was over,” Steele said on an August 15 episode of his Sirius XM radio show. “I am sad to say that in the course of the 2016 campaign, that strategy was revived. And now this seminal moment faces this party, where you’re either going to kill this bastard right off the top, just get rid of the Southern Strategy or you’re going to own it in perpetuity.” Outside of the Opryland complex, other Republicans were engaged in an argument about what else the party needed to do. On Tuesday, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) told reporters that a bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest, the founder of the Ku Klux Klan, should be removed from the state capitol complex. But the leading Republican candidates for governor, including Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.), stopped short of that, suggesting that the issue needed further debate in the Republican-controlled state legislature. And further away, the leadership of the Democratic National Committee accused Republicans of distracting from a crisis that they’d enabled long before Trump’s victory. “The Republican Party, led by President Trump, has cultivated a culture of hate through their rhetoric and policies,” said DNC spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa. “A vote on a resolution doesn’t fix the systemic problems within the Republican party. Conservative firebrand Joe Walsh tweeted if he signs the immigration bill, “Governor Rauner is done.” Last week the governor on WBEZ-FM called the immigration measure — the Illinois Trust Act — “very reasonable,” but would not confirm whether he’d sign it. On Tuesday, the governor’s office confirmed he’d sign the immigration and voter registration measures on Monday. The immigration legislation would prohibit police in Illinois from detaining or arresting a person based on their immigration status or on federal immigration detainer. It would allow law enforcement officials, however, to detain a person with a judge’s order. The bill passed with bipartisan support and was supported by faith leaders, law enforcement and businesses. But Republicans initially opposed the measure, arguing it will cause a conflict with federal laws. State Sen. Dave Syverson of Rockford has said Republicans are concerned the “blanket prohibition could result in leaving criminal illegal immigrants, including those accused of violent crimes, on the streets.” The conservative news organization Breitbart just wrote an article on the bill suggesting Rauner would be helping Democrats “frustrate federal immigration enforcement.” And Walsh, a former congressman and talk radio personality, weighed in on Tuesday, tweeting that if Rauner “allows Illinois to become a sanctuary state, I will not support his reelection. No way.” When TV reporter Mary Ann Ahern tweeted that Rauner planned to sign the bill, Walsh responded: “If true, bad terrible day for Illinois. Bruce Rauner does not plan to wade into the controversy over a cartoon by a conservative think tank that sparked bipartisan outrage in the General Assembly and charges that it was racially offensive. “The governor would never try to talk anyone out of their reaction to any piece of art, political or nonpolitical, right or left, good or bad,” Rauner spokeswoman Laurel Patrick said Tuesday. “The governor has great respect for the black caucus and members of the General Assembly who voiced concerns about the cartoon. “The governor’s office has also heard from members of the black community who found truth in the imagery and do not find the cartoon offensive. Here is where things stand: The cartoon was removed days ago. And the governor – as a white male – does not have anything more to add to the discussion.” The cartoon by the Illinois Policy Institute depicted a black child in a Cubs cap begging for money for school from a wealthy cigar-smoking white man, who was showing one pocket empty and the other stuffed with tax-increment financing money. Because while surrounding states add jobs, Illinois grinds private-sector concerns in its gears. The nation generated a 1.3 percent average annual growth rate from 2006-16, but Illinois managed just 0.4 percent, according to James Broughel of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. Wisconsin outstripped Illinois with a 0.7 percent rate, and Indiana’s was more than double this state’s, at 0.9 percent. In July, the state’s unemployment rate ticked up. That’s the same month that Springfield passed a 32 percent personal income tax hike — inviting more people and businesses to head for the exits. Thank you, Senate President John Cullerton and House Speaker Michael Madigan. And what about those promised reforms, such as overhauling workers’ compensation, that could persuade more businesses to come, stay or expand? Or pruning Illinois’ wildly overgrown local governments to ease taxpayer burdens — two of the items on Gov. Bruce Rauner’s pro-jobs agenda? What, say the ranking Democrats, us worry? We recently sized up this state’s economic competitiveness and quality of life in a series of measures. In capsule, Illinois leads the nation in the worst ways. You know about the lousy credit rating, the unfunded pension liabilities, the onerous regulations on employers. Once a colossus that overshadowed its Midwest neighbors, Illinois in eclipse can’t escape the shadow. Other states gain by offering a sunnier jobs climate. Wisconsin recently landed what could be a $10 billion Foxconn LCD panel factory that will employ as many as 13,000 people. How did Wisconsin prevail? By being close to Illinois but not Illinois. Foxconn sought to exploit Illinois’ assets — its transportation and logistical systems, its energy reliability — but avoid its ever-rising taxes, crushing public debts and never-ending political brink-dancing. Foxconn chose a state that does the basics, like pass a budget every year. In a state in eclipse, though, even that task is too difficult. A couple of media outlets filed open records requests to get emails sent by first lady DIANA RAUNER on a state email account. It was not a question of trying to get emails sent on a personal account. One reason was to determine if the first lady had a hand in all of the recent staff changes, as many suspect. Anyway, according to Politico, the request was denied citing two exemptions in the state’s open records law. One exempts communication with an attorney that would not be revealed in court, and the other covers preliminary drafts, notes and etc. If you’ve used the Freedom of Information Act, you know that the preliminary drafts exemption can be used to conceal a whole lot of stuff. The news outlets did stories about the denials on Tuesday. The whole thing seemed to be on the governor’s mind Tuesday afternoon when he did an availability at the fair. “Reporters have been calling asking if my wife has been very involved in the staff changes that have gone on in my office over the last month or two,” he said. “I think the inquiries, the questions themselves are pathetic.
