ILLINOIS FAMILY INSTITUTE
— Feds Are Simply Out-of-Touch – David E. Smith
https://illinoisfamily.org/marriage/feds-simply-touch/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently claimed in a press release that the cost of raising a child from birth through age 17 is $233,610, or almost $14,000 annually. As the father of seven children, let me say that this is utter nonsense. Moreover, the USDA fails to identify the multiple benefits of raising children, such as the physical, spiritual, intellectual and emotional advantages. These benefits are not just unquantifiable, but inestimable. The value of raising, nurturing and training children far surpass the outlandish financial estimates of Washington D.C. bureaucrats. With the USDA’s exaggerated estimates, how do we expect to encourage married couples to return to the healthy birth rate of more than 2.1 in the United States?  We’re shortsighted if we fail to see that the current U.S. trend is unsustainable and portends economic trouble, including lower living standards for most citizens. We simply have to look at Japan, Greece or Italy for a lesson in the detriments of low birth rates. Federal officials are simply out-of-touch with Middle America. Most of us don’t spend hundreds of dollars on a hammer and we spend far less than they estimate to raise our each child every year. Maybe the federal government can learn something from working families?)

http://gmauthority.com/blog/2017/01/vice-president-joe-biden-plans-to-purchase-a-corvette-upon-leaving-office/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: We all know Vice President Joe Biden’s love affair with Corvettes; it’s a very well-documented obsession. In fact, he still owns a C2 Corvette given to him as a wedding gift decades ago.
However, Biden has big automotive plans upon leaving office. During VP Biden’s visit to the 2017 North American International Auto Show, he told reporters one of his first actions after exiting his current role will be to “Buy a Corvette.”  Biden was seen checking out numerous vehicle during the show and was greeted by Fiat-Chrysler Vice President Brian Harlow, Ford President and CEO Mark Fields and GM Executive Vice President Mark Reuss. But, it was Reuss’ team Biden was loving up on. The VP was seen sitting in numerous C7 Corvettes on the show floor, likely doing some window shopping at the same time.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170107/ISSUE01/301079996/as-trump-eyes-dodd-frank-chicago-derivatives-biz-gears-up-for-fight
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For all the Trump team talk about gutting President Barack Obama’s landmark financial law, Chicago’s trading community is wagering that at least part of it will stick: swaps reform. Swaps were a villain in the Great Recession, and Obama’s 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform & Consumer Protection Act pushed them from clubby, private bank transactions onto public platforms. There they became a welcome addition to the Chicago trading world. President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming team has vowed to dismantle the law, but Chicago’s trading interests won’t easily give up the companies, products and venues created after Wall Street banks’ grip on the swaps market was loosened. Financial exchanges like CME Group and trading firms such as Citadel have generated tens of millions of dollars in new swaps business, and they’ll be reluctant to let go of the new infrastructure built on Dodd-Frank’s Title VII, which set up a framework for the regulation of swaps markets. “People now are getting used to the standards,” says Brian Liston, co-founder and president of Seed CX, which launched a new Chicago swaps trading platform. “They should really change Title VII slowly if they have to, and ultimately I don’t think they’re going to.” Swaps are financial shorthand for arrangements in which parties agree to swap the risk associated with financial contracts tied to underlying values, like interest rates. In the 2008 financial crisis, those privately negotiated deals in the subprime mortgage market blew up and swamped major institutions with defaults.)

EDITOR AND PUBLISHER
— The Solution to Fake News – Nu Yang  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, newspapers act as arms of the Democrat Party.)
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/columns/editorial-the-solution-to-fake-news/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With President-elect Donald Trump set to take office this month, newspapers at major publications like the New York Times and Wall Street Journal have seen a major bump in subscriptions. In a span of a few weeks after the election, the Times confirmed it had about 132,000 paid print and digital subscriptions while the Journal reported it saw a 300 percent increase in new subscribers a day after Trump was elected. Publishers should take this news as an encouraging sign that the public does want accurate and truthful reporting. Newspapers remain an important and powerful brand, and they should be the solution for fake news. Let’s not forget that before social media and algorithms dictated to us what was considered news, newspapers were our source of information. Despite many journalists operating with leaner newsrooms and resources, they still put in the same time and energy while covering this election. But when we look back at 2016, there were certainly some media lessons that had we all had to learn, but now we need to move forward and pick ourselves up because there’s still plenty of work that needs to be done.)

http://www.breitbart.com/video/2017/01/01/michele-norris-make-a-america-great-again-is-trumps-deeply-encoded-promise-of-white-prosperity/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sunday on CBS’s “Face The Nation,” radio journalist and former host of the National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered,” Michele Norris said President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign promise to “Make America Great Again,” is a “deeply encoded,” slogan meant as a  “promise of white prosperity above everything else.” Norris said, “In the phrase ‘Make America Great Again,’ there’s one word that if you are a person of color, that you sort of stumble over, and it’s the word ‘again.’ Because you’re talking about going back to a time that was not very comfortable for people of color. They did not have opportunities, they were relegated to the back of the line.”  “And this was a country that — to be honest — was built on the promise of white prosperity above everything else. And for a lot of people, when they hear that message, ‘Make America Great Again,’ deeply encoded in that message is a return to a time where white Americans can assume a certain amount of prosperity,” she added.)

http://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/advice/2017/01/01/traveling-abroad-donald-trump-administration/95999452/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: How should Americans travel abroad in the age of Donald Trump? No matter how you voted in the last election, the answer is the same: carefully. But also, definitely. As the president-elect prepares to take office Jan. 20, travelers have expressed worries about how they’ll be perceived internationally after a lengthy campaign that tested the limits of civility. “A potentially controversial president means you have to prepare,” says Colby Martin, an intelligence director for Pinkerton. “Americans traveling abroad need to have a comprehensive plan for staying safe.” Reality check: Most international trips abroad will probably — hopefully — be uneventful, regardless who’s in the White House.  That’s because our most popular destinations are Mexico and Canada, in that order. And they’re used to the ups and downs of our political system and accustomed to American visitors. Roughly the same number of Americans visit Canada as they do all of Europe. But wander outside the well-trodden areas, and things could get interesting, say experts.)

— IS COLLEGE A SCAM? – Kent Kellar  (DIERSEN: How successful were you in putting your college degree to work?  In August of 1970, I graduated from NIU with a bachelor’s degree in management and started working for Firestone in its Chicago Heights Store as its Retail Sales Manager.  In early 1971, because I was not putting my college degree to work, I accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile to be a Factory Representative.  The Firestone Store manager immediately fired me when I gave him my 2-week notice.  But then, Oldsmobile withdrew its job offer saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint.  That directly resulted in my accepting a job offer from IRS to be a GS-7 (currently $43,914) Revenue Officer.)
http://conservativerepublicannews.com/2016/12/29/is-college-a-scam/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: College graduates are finding themselves unable to put their degrees to work, LeAndre Martinez of the Huffington Post explains that “I am 23 years old. I’ve got $60,000 in debt from student loans. I make around $10 an hour working as a cook, and I live off of about $20 a week after I cover rent and other expenses. Since I graduated, my degree has been pretty much useless. When people see that I have a degree, it’s like it doesn’t even mean anything. Every job that I’ve done, it’s kind of been by personal relation or word of mouth.” Martinez is not a lazy millennial, but a product of a weak economy and a diminishing labor force. Investors Business Daily of Dec. 2016 explains, “40 percent of [Millennials] still live with their parents, a 75-year high. They can’t afford to live on their own… This may well be the challenge of the coming decade — to re-skill and retrain younger workers so that they can find better, higher paying jobs and move out of their mom and dad’s house and into their own digs. They’re just bearing the brunt of decades of failed economic policies that have cut U.S. economic growth from 3 percent-plus to below 2 percent, and caused family incomes to stagnate.”)

http://www.mywebtimes.com/news/local/conservative-paper-plagiarized/article_30d2a752-90fa-59fa-8804-63301459dc54.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A co-owner of a chain of conservative papers said late last week a writer and an editor were “terminated” after The Times identified instances of plagiarism. In November, the Illinois Valley Times ran two stories that contained passages from Times stories without proper attribution. The chain of Illinois papers is run by Local Government Information Services Inc.; the Illinois Valley Times has no local presence, with its writers from elsewhere, including the Philippines. Dan Proft, one of the company’s owners, said plagiarism is against his company’s policy. “(W)e take proper attribution and substantiation of sources and content seriously and instruct our people accordingly,” he said in an email late last week. “The hundreds of stories we’ve done across all our properties speak very clearly to the veracity of my statement of policy.” On Nov. 19, the Illinois Valley Times posted a story to its website about Republican Karen Donnelly’s victory over Democrat Brian Towne in the state’s attorney race 11 days before. The story included a series of direct quotes from the two candidates that were from The Times’ election night story. The conservative paper attributed none of the quotes to The Times. Other paragraphs were paraphrased from The Times’ story. In his email, Proft said the lack of attribution was a “major problem and should’ve been caught by our editor.” In a Nov. 9 story, the Illinois Valley Times reported Republican state representative candidate Jerry Long’s victory over Democratic Rep. Andy Skoog. The story contained a direct quote from the director of a think tank based at Southern Illinois University, saying the director made the comment to the Illinois Valley Times in September. In fact, the director, David Yepsen, had given the quote to The Times in September. Proft said an editor mistakenly changed “Times” to “Illinois Valley Times,” thinking it was a typo. For both stories, Proft said, it appeared speed was chosen over accuracy. “These are our mistakes, and we take accountability for them,” Proft said in his email. “Both the writer and the editor in question have been terminated as a result of this sloppy work.” Soon after Proft’s response to The Times, both stories were corrected to include proper attributions. Editors added notations at the end of the stories indicating the previous problems. Proft couldn’t be reached for a phone interview.)

— Congress Curbs Misuse of Administrative Leave – Ralph R. Smith  (DIERSEN: Constructively, the Democrats who run GAO have had me on reduced (42%) administrative leave since 1997.  My Civil Service Retirement System pension is $50,720, or 42% of the GS-13 Step 10 salary (currently $120,427) that GAO paid me in 1997.)
http://www.fedsmith.com/2016/12/26/congress-curbs-misuse-of-administrative-leave/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Senator also noted that this figure might be too low because of imprecise calculations provided by some agencies. His report also noted that tens of thousands of federal employees were on paid leave for at least one month. Several hundred employees were on paid leave for nine months to three years over a three-year period. Senator Grassley succinctly stated his opinion this way: “Paid leave shouldn’t be a crutch for management to avoid making tough personnel decisions or a club for wrongdoers to use against whistleblowers.” The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has also concluded that about $775 million was spent on more than 57,000 employees on paid administrative leave for more than a month.)

BLAZE
— Let’s start calling them ‘biology deniers’ – Matt Walsh (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, Democrats encourage children to engage in LGBTQ activity.  That is enough reason to not send any child to any school run by Democrats.)
http://www.theblaze.com/podcasts/matt-walsh-lets-start-calling-them-biology-deniers/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Earlier in the week National Geographic unveiled its January cover story. They are profiling a confused and abused young boy who thinks he’s a girl. Of course, he isn’t presented as someone who is confused and abused. Rather he’s presented as a boy who is actually a girl, which is like presenting a triangle that’s actually a circle. There was a time when National Geographic was considered a science magazine. But the publication, along with liberalism more generally, has abandoned science. Indeed, anyone who suggests that a boy can be a girl is not only guilty of perpetuating abuse, but also guilty of rejecting the entire field of science known as biology. That is why I propose a new name for those who believe in the “transgender” superstition. They are biology deniers. They are people who fundamentally deny the existence of biological sex. They may say that they accept biological sex and proceed to draw a false and fabricated distinction between that and “gender,” but the fact remains that if you will call a boy anything other than a boy, you have denied his biology. You are a biology denier. And that’s what you ought to be called.)

CHIEF LEADER
— Key Federal Worker Protections May Be in Jeopardy Under Trump Regime – BOB HENNELLY  (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes a) promote patronage, b) reject the Pendleton Act, and c) reject merit hiring.  They side with Jim Thompson, Jim Edgar, and my Democrat GAO, IRS, and Post Office superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Tradition at a Crossroads  For more than 130 years, Federal civil-service employees have enjoyed legal protection from partisan politics, but in recent years the partisan standoff in Washington has led to the lapsing of the authorizations for the agencies that enforce these laws. In the case of the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board, which polices the entire civil service system, the failure to act on a nominee made by President Obama in 2015 will mean that just a few months into Mr. Trump’s term, it is likely that board will cease to have a quorum. As a consequence of the Senate’s failure to act, the incoming President will be able to appoint two of the three MSPB members. Currently the two million plus Federal workers who report to the 4,000 political appointees selected by the President enjoy civil service protections that were first put on the books in the 1880s in homage to President James A. Garfield, who was assassinated by a disgruntled office-seeker who felt slighted that his political work for Mr. Garfield’s Republican Party had gone unrewarded with a patronage position. Mr. Garfield had been a fierce opponent of the spoils system, cracked down on corruption in the U.S. Post Office and said in his inaugural address that “the civil service can never be placed on a satisfactory basis until it is regulated by law.”  Required Merit Hiring  The Pendleton Act, passed in 1883, two years after Mr. Garfield’s death, required that Federal employees be hired on merit and selected based on the results of competitive exams they would be required to take. This was a radical departure from the patronage system that mushroomed in the first 100 years of the nation. “When Garfield was assassinated, it was sort of a galvanizing event and it made a lot of policymakers scrutinize the spoils system—and there had been dissatisfaction with it,” said James Read, the Director of Policy and Evaluation for the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board. The MSPB is a bipartisan quasi – judicial agency that has 228 employees and an annual budget of close to $47 million. It hears, on average, several thousand cases a year brought by Federal employees who believe their treatment by superiors violated the statutes and regulations that govern the Federal workforce. With the recent budget battles that produced furloughs, a government shutdown, and budget cuts due to sequester, the number of cases swelled to 33,000 in 2013.)
