According to local Kentucky news station WNKY-TV, the FBI launched an investigation into the attack shortly after it happened. They believe the attack, which occurred Friday afternoon, was politically motivated. The Daily Caller revealed Saturday evening that the assailant, 59-year-old Rene Boucher, is a registered Democrat whose Facebook page was riddled with posts voicing his opposition to President Donald Trump and the GOP. What happened? Boucher allegedly assaulted Paul while he was mowing his lawn around 3:20 p.m. Friday afternoon. In a wide-ranging interview with KLAS-TV in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Lombardo revealed that Paddock may have seen his image declining. What does this have to do with a motive? “He was going through some bouts of depression. But he was status-driven,” Lombardo told KLAS in the interview, which was given in an attempt to clarify the murkiness surrounding the October shooting. “Since September 2015, he’s lost a significant amount of wealth, and I think that might have been a determining factor on what he was determined to do,” Lombardo added.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Jeanne Ives faces uphill fight if she challenges Rauner – Rich Miller
https://chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/miller-jeanne-ives-faces-uphill-fight-if-she-challenges-rauner/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Until recently, state Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) had been passing separate nominating petitions for both her re-election to the Illinois House and a possible primary bid for governor against incumbent Republican Bruce Rauner. The ultra-conservative firebrand now says she has stopped passing re-election petitions. But if a recent poll is any indication, Rep. Ives might want to keep her House re-election bid alive because the state’s Republican Party may not be nearly as divided as some GOP politicians have been claiming it is. A Capitol Fax/We Ask America poll found that 61 percent of 1,064 likely Republican voters had a favorable impression of Gov. Rauner. Just 24 percent had an unfavorable opinion, despite the fact that he has been taking enormous heat from his right flank ever since he signed a publicly funded abortion on demand bill into law in late September. The intensely outspoken anger directed at Rauner over the abortion bill, which he promised to veto last spring, is pretty much without precedent. “In the face of overwhelming evidence of Rauner’s inability to competently administer the Illinois government, inability to stand up to Mike Madigan effectively, and inability to keep his word and his commitments, I can no longer support him,” said Rep. Peter Breen (R-Lombard) after Rauner signed the bill. “And whether or not they are able to agree publicly, I know hundreds of elected Republicans, along with hundreds of thousands of Republican voters, who feel the same way I do.” Maybe not. We didn’t test President Donald Trump in this poll, but nationally he’s been getting somewhere between 80 and 85 percent support from members of his own party. So while Rauner has some very real problems when compared with Trump, is the opposition stiff enough to actually take him out in the primary? The poll, conducted for my newsletter subscribers Oct. 25-29, found Gov. Rauner is leading Rep. Ives 64-19, with 16 percent undecided. The poll had a margin of error of +/-3 percent. Rep. Ives told the Daily Herald not long ago that she had commitments for “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in contributions. But she’s gonna need a whole lot more than that because almost nobody knows who she is. According to the poll, 83 percent of Republican voters have never heard of Ives. Rep. Ives can tap into a strong statewide network of seasoned pro-life activists to collect enough signatures to get her onto the ballot against Rauner. And while that network also can generate lots of word of mouth for her candidacy (including via social media), it has historically never generated the kind of money that Ives will need to compete with the deep-pockets Rauner. If no millionaire surfaces to fund her campaign, she’ll need to tap into national small-dollar sources. So, it was somewhat surprising that Rep. Ives did not try to use her kickoff to closely tie herself to President Donald Trump. She never uttered his name during a long Illinois Channel television interview and didn’t appear to mention her party’s national leader when she launched her petition drive. That’s probably the easiest way to attract national attention and support, particularly since Gov. Rauner is so reticent to comment on anything the president says or does. According to the poll, 85 percent of Downstaters and suburban Cook voters have never heard of Ives, and neither has 78 percent of collar county suburbanites. Gov. Rauner’s Downstate lead over Rep. Ives is 65-17. It’s 67-16 in suburban Cook County and 65-22 in the collars. Among men, Rauner leads 69-21 with 10 percent undecided. Among women, it’s 60-17, with 23 percent undecided. Forty-seven percent of the respondents were mobile phone users. Her only “bright spot” is Chicago, where Rauner’s lead is 41-34. Even so, 76 percent of Chicagoans say they’ve never heard of her, meaning they chose her without knowing who she is. Chicago is the only region where Rauner’s favorability is upside down. Just 40 percent have a favorable opinion versus 49 percent who have an unfavorable view. “It won’t be easy to convince potential deep-pocket contributors that she has a fighting chance,” said pollster Gregg Durham of Rep. Ives. “In this first, albeit early poll, it’s hard to see a path for her success should she decide to take the plunge into these very treacherous waters.”)

Over a third of filers in many Democratic states like California, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut claim the SALT deduction on their returns. Under the GOP plan, people will still be able to deduct up to $10,000 on the property taxes they pay locally, but they will no longer be able to deduct the other taxes they pay to state or local governments from their federal tax payments.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20171102/BLOGS02/171109948/roskam-lauds-gop-tax-plan-that-could-hit-thousands-of-constituents
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Illinois congressman who’s one of the major authors of the big new GOP tax plan says he’s solidly behind it and intends to vote to enact it—even though local tax authorities say tens of thousands of homeowners in his district would be affected by a new cap on property-tax deductions, potentially cutting into and maybe eliminating any overall tax cut they would enjoy under the rewritten rules. . .The potential problem with that is that tens of thousands of residents in Roskam’s district, which is centered in DuPage County but also includes portions of Lake and Kane Counties, now pay more than that in property taxes. For instance, in DuPage, County Treasurer Gwen Henry reports that in the latest available year, 49,095 owners of single-family residences got annual tax bills of more than $10,000. That’s just under a fifth of the total 288,123 of such parcels in the county.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Joe Ricketts, the billionaire founder of TD Ameritrade who owned DNAinfo’s New York and Chicago sites, has shut down both a week after the New York newsroom voted to join a union. The New York Times reports that the decision “puts 115 journalists out of work, both at the New York operations that unionized, and at those in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington that did not.” Ricketts’ decision will also affect the website Chicagoist, part of the Gothamist news network, also owned by Ricketts. The Chicago newsroom, which launched in 2012, employed dozens of journalists. DNAinfo reporters and editors are saying on Twitter that all their stories appear to be gone from the site.)

Nevertheless, they did everything that they could to get rid of me. In my defense, I completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, became a licensed CPA in 1981, a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, a Certified Government Financial Manager in 1994, a Certified Financial Services Auditor in 1996, and a Forensic Accountant in 1997. In addition, completed the requirements for a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/zorn/ct-perspec-zorn-ives-rauner-governor-race-1101-20171031-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Big-money folks who are funding these challenges — Steve Bannon, Charles Mercer, Charles and David Koch and so on — could well come to see Ives as a political soulmate and throw enough cash her way to at least blunt Rauner’s advantage and make a race of it. After all, Bannon-backed Roy Moore just won a Republican U.S. Senate primary in Alabama despite being outspent 10-to-1 by incumbent Sen. Luther Strange. And in 2014, challenger Dave Brat, backed by grassroots conservatives, ousted House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in a Virginia congressional primary in which he was outspent a reported 26-to-1. Conservative organizations and big donors in Illinois, who have already sent some modest financial encouragement Ives’ way, could also get solidly behind her candidacy if she chooses to run.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20171030/NEWS04/171039997/retired-federal-judge-posner-launching-pro-bono-project
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A prominent retired judge is launching a pro bono law firm to help people who face court battles but don’t want or can’t afford lawyers. Richard Posner told the Law360 news service that several lawyers already signed up. He says he’ll fund the project himself, partly drawing on a $217,000 salary he’ll keep getting in retirement. The 78-year-old gained fame for his intellectually rigorous but sometimes off-beat opinions on Chicago’s 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Appointed in 1981, Posner abruptly retired in September, citing clashes with fellow judges over what Posner considered unfair treatment of those acting as their own attorneys.)

FRONTPAGE MAGAZINE
— DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WHITE PEOPLE: IT’S REAL As real as the discrimination against black people was under segregation. – Daniel Greenfield (DIERSEN: Democrats use Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion to get rid of Republicans, and especially Republicans who are White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
http://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/268256/discrimination-against-white-people-its-real-daniel-greenfield
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The release of an NPR poll in which a majority of white people (55%) answered that they face racial discrimination was treated with the media’s usual cocktail of condescension, disbelief and contempt. But it’s not up for debate. Racial discrimination against white people today is as real as the discrimination against black people was under segregation. We can talk about subjective experiences and do statistical correlations about differential outcomes until the cows come home. And that’s what most talk about racism is these days. That and emotional outbursts, cries of, “Hands up, don’t shoot” and “I can’t breathe”. But only one racial group in America is subject to a system of codes, regulations and laws discriminating against members of its race when it comes to employment and education. Affirmative action is an inescapably real and racist as segregated water fountains. Affirmative action is racial discrimination, not as a matter of opinion, but as a hard objective fact. Racial preferences reward and punish people based on their race. These preferences, no matter how they are disguised, pervade not just one region, the way that segregation did, but much of the country. Diversity is a mandate on campuses and in corporations across the country. And it’s the very definition of racism.)

CHICAGO NOW
— How America deals with Hate Speech – James Kirk Wall
http://www.chicagonow.com/an-atheist-in-illinois/2017/10/how-america-deals-with-hate-speech/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In 1995 the KKK came to Wheaton, IL Wheaton is a Western suburb of Chicago next to Naperville. In 1995 the Ku Klux Klan legally obtained a permit to demonstrate in the county court house. So what do you do when this happens in your town? An organization of hate and ignorance which has historically caused great suffering to a great number of people. This is how it was handled in Wheaton. Citizens of Mexican heritage organized a 26-piece mariachi band to perform on the common grounds. There were also protestors. If you came to this event you could stand with the protestors and chant, “Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! KKK has got to go!” Or you could hang out with the band and do a little La Bamba. The best case scenario for a KKK rally is that nobody shows up. Having not that many people there and a mariachi band wasn’t a bad response. That organization hasn’t been back to Wheaton since. There was a police presence to keep the peace. To make sure people were protected from harmful actions, not offensive words.)
