CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Can a guy with a Bronx accent become mayor of Chicago? – Neil Steinberg (DIERSEN: How long have you lived in your municipality? Most, if virtually all of my current critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes live in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, or in DuPage County. Few of them have lived or worked outside of DuPage County. They have always painted me as being a newcomer and an outsider. I lived in Crete 1948-1972, University Park 1972-1976, Chicago 1976-1978, and Wheaton since 1978. I worked in Chicago Heights 1964-1966 and 1970-1972, in Flossmoor in 1966, in Park Forest 1966-1969, in Chicago 1971 and 1973-1997, in Harvey 1972-1973, and in Joliet 1973-1974.)

I should write a book about those who have demonized, denigrated, and condemned taxpayers like me who have itemized and who have a) deducted the mortgage interest that they paid, b) deducted the real estate tax that they paid, c) deducted the medical and dental expenses that they paid, d) deducted the state income tax that they paid, and e) deducted the job-related education expenses that they paid.)

— Panel breaks down Rauner win, fallout – Paul Cicchin
http://www.centralillinoisproud.com/news/local-news/ciotr-panel-breaks-down-rauner-win-fallout/1074145869
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Can the Illinois Republican Party unify behind Gov. Bruce Rauner in the months ahead in an effort to defeat J.B. Pritzker. The question remains after state Rep. Jeanne Ives says she will vote for Rauner in November, but will not endorse him. Ives says Rauner needs to spend $1 million on an ad apologizing for false ads he ran during the primary. Chris Kaergard, with the Peoria Journal Star, and Mike Bigger, an Illinois GOP state central committeeman, break down the fallout from the primary and what to expect in the months ahead.)
— Capitol bureau chief talks primary, general elections – Paul Cicchini
http://www.centralillinoisproud.com/news/local-news/capitol-bureau-chief-talks-primary-general-elections/1074124617
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The general election is 226 days away, meaning there’s plenty of time for the candidates for governor to spend money on attack ads and crisscross the state to deliver their message to voters. Each party may be dealing with a fractured base, but none more so than the Republican Party after a divisive primary between Gov. Bruce Rauner and state Rep. Jeanne Ives. Capitol Bureau Chief Mark Maxwell joined Central Illinois On the Record to discuss fallout from the primary and what’s ahead in the general election.)

Jim Ryan supporters continue to blame Pat O’Malley supporters for Ryan’s loss in 2002.)

BLAZE

While 93 voted for Kasich in my precinct in the 2016 Republican primary, only 21 voted for Trump. Members of the following groups want me to “listen” to the voters in my precinct rather than promote the Republican Party platform: anti-Trump supporters, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)

— U.S. Army veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan has been deported to Mexico – Theresa Waldrop (DIERSEN: Government is nasty. Politics is nasty. If I sought a government office or a political office, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would use Miguel Perez against me big time. They would stress that I sought and obtained four student draft deferments 1966-1970 and a financial hardship draft deferment 1970-1971. Because Roskam endorsed me in 2000 when I first ran for Republican Precinct Committeeman and because I have always supported Roskam, they would get Duckworth to call me a draft avoider, a draft dodger, a patriotic hypocrite, a coward, and even worse things.)
https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/25/us/us-veteran-deported-to-mexico/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Perez, his family and supporters, who include Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, had argued that his wartime service to the country had earned him the right to stay in the US and to receive mental health treatment for the PTSD and substance abuse. “It’s shameful to turn our backs on those who have the courage to wear the uniform,” Duckworth said after Perez’s citizenship application was denied. “We can do better than this.”)

They work especially hard against me because I oppose the promotion of pot.)

FED SMITH
— Is Your Government Job Turning You Into A Charity Case? – Martha (Austin) Wilson (DIERSEN: What did you do to qualify yourself for a better paying job? I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)
https://www.fedsmith.com/2018/03/25/government-job-turning-charity-case/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I was introducing myself to someone yesterday and mentioned that I help burned out mid-career government employees get their happy back in their government work. She replied, “Well, good luck with that. The government employees I know are pretty entrenched. They just want to gripe and complain and draw a paycheck. They actually like it that way.” It was a short conversation. I was furious! First, the average citizen has no concept of the complexity of the issues you deal with at work every day. In fact, most don’t even know what you do! Until the day that your part of the system breaks down, of course, and then they’re all up in your grill. And second, I remember what it felt like. I remember being that burned out, pissed-off employee. I also remember desperately wanting NOT to feel that way. The mission of my organization mattered to me, and I felt like a failure at it. I had allowed my job to turn me into a charity case: taking all the crumbs I could get but not investing OF myself IN myself.)

Conservative donors in Illinois are anti-union, pro-employer, and they have no problem with patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/25/business/economy/labor-court-conservatives.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The mailing, sent by a group called the Illinois Policy Institute, may have seemed like disinterested advice. In fact, it was one prong of a broader campaign against public-sector unions, backed by some of the biggest donors on the right. It is an effort that will reach its apex on Monday, when the Supreme Court hears a case that could cripple public-sector unions by allowing the workers they represent to avoid paying fees. One of the institute’s largest donors is a foundation bankrolled by Richard Uihlein, an Illinois industrialist who has spent millions backing Republican candidates in recent years, including Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, and Gov. Bruce Rauner of Illinois. Tax filings show that Mr. Uihlein has also been the chief financial backer in recent years of the Liberty Justice Center, which represents Mark Janus, the Illinois child support specialist who is the plaintiff in the Supreme Court case. And Mr. Uihlein has donated well over $1 million over the years to groups like the Federalist Society that work to orient the judiciary in a more conservative direction. They have helped produce a Supreme Court that most experts expect to rule in Mr. Janus’s favor.)

ILLINOIS REPUBLICAN PARTY
— ILGOP Chairman Tim Schneider Statement on State Rep. Jeanne Ives’ Campaign Ad Illinois Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider released the following statement on State Representative Jeanne Ives’ recently released campaign advertisement: “There is no place in the Illinois Republican Party for rhetoric that attacks our fellow Illinoisans based on their race, gender or humanity. Representative Ives’ campaign ad does not reflect who we are as the Party of Lincoln and as proud residents of our great and diverse state. She should pull down the ad and immediately apologize to the Illinoisans who were negatively portrayed in a cowardly attempt to stoke political division.” (DIERSEN: The ad does NOT attack “our fellow Illinoisans based on their race, gender or humanity.” It attacks Rauner’s failure/refusal to defend/advance the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform and especially its traditional family, right to life, and immigration planks. In the interest of full disclosure, Schneider should disclose the amount and percent of the IRP’s donations that comes from Rauner and from Rauner’s supporters.)

Illinois is a strong and diverse state – a microcosm of America. Representative Ives’ campaign advertisement is wrong on so many levels and an insult to everything that makes us Illinoisans and Americans. I believe this advertisement does not represent the Republican Party or our shared American values, and should never again see the light of day.”)

DARLENE SENGER

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The GOP gubernatorial primary campaign of state Rep. JEANNE IVES, R-Wheaton, recently put out a list of county coordinators and contacts. Among them, in Macoupin County, is CHRISTOPHER HICKS. Hicks was removed from the ballot as a GOP candidate in the 48th Senate District for lack of adequate signatures. He was also questioned by police after a visit to State Rep. AVERY BOURNE’s office in Litchfield, where he told an aide there would be “political blood and vengeance” if the representative did not co-sponsor a bill. No charges resulted, and Hicks said his comment was political and not a threat. Meanwhile, in Sangamon County, the Ives contact list includes STEVEN WESTERFIELD. Westerfield also was removed from the ballot for the 99th House District GOP race. He and Hicks are both running as write-in candidates in the March 20 primary. Also listed for Ives in Sangamon County is LIZ EILERS BRON, whose political involvement has included being 2012 state director for the HERMAN CAIN presidential campaign; and ARI SHROYER, a government affairs associate with the Illinois Policy Institute. In Lake County, the campaign contact is DENISE ROTHEIMER, who was recently in the news as she accused state Sen. IRA SILVERSTEIN, D-Chicago, of harassment. The legislative inspector general said Silverstein made inappropriate comments to her, but did not sexually harass her. “I am happy to help Ives any way I can,” Rotheimer said. Bourne, by the way, was among lawmakers who took to social media to criticize the planned speaker for an Ives fundraiser in McHenry County last week. Ives ended up canceling a speech by BILL WHITTLE, who had, among other things, called the Democratic Party “the largest slaveholder in the history of the world,” and, the Chicago Tribune reported, has said blacks are inferior to whites. “Whittle’s racially-charged comments are embarrassing and reprehensible,” Bourne had tweeted. “Rep. Ives should do the right thing — cancel her fundraiser.” Speaking of racially charged: BLAIR GARBER of Evanston, who last week resigned as chairman of the Illinois Lottery Control Board after using a profane word on Twitter to describe East St. Louis, also resigned from the Republican State Central Committee.)

In the interest of full disclosure, Schneider should disclose the amount and percent of the IRP’s donations that comes from Rauner and from Rauner’s supporters.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The chairman of the Illinois Republican Party says a GOP governor candidate should stop airing a campaign ad that critics have called racist and homophobic. Tim Schneider said in a release Saturday that conservative state Rep. Jeanne Ives should “immediately apologize to the Illinoisans who were negatively portrayed in a cowardly attempt to stoke political division.” He says there’s no room in the Illinois GOP “for rhetoric that attacks our fellow Illinoisans based on their race, gender or humanity.” The ad features actors portraying a transgender woman and an African-American union member, among others, all thanking Rauner for his policies. The transgender woman is deep-voiced and wears a dress that shows chest hair. Ives says the ad illustrates Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s “betrayals of conservatives.” The Illinois GOP is almost entirely funded by Rauner.)

— Rauner rival Ives cancels speech by pundit who says whites superior to blacks – Rick Pearson and Kim Geiger
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-jeanne-ives-20180201-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In an endorsement video the Ives campaign had posted but said it will now pull, Whittle says of the challenger: “I could not invent a better candidate for the times we live in than Jeanne Ives.” Whittle was a guest of the fundraiser’s co-chair, Gary Rabine, the founder and CEO of the Rabine Group, a national parking lot pavement company. Rabine said Whittle was a friend and flew out from California for the fundraiser. He described Whittle as “a high quality person with not an ounce of racism in his body.” “I’m sure there’s something that didn’t sound right, because he talks a lot, he’s on video, he’s on radio, he’s got podcasts, thousands and thousands of hours,” Rabine said. “So I’m sure something was there that doesn’t sound right, because it just happens. He’s a very passionate guy, so I’m sure he doesn’t say the perfect thing all the time.” Rabine, of Johnsburg, gave Rauner $9,500 during the 2014 race but contributed $10,000 to Ives in November. The Ives camp dumped its guest speaker after Brady, who heads the Republican caucus in the Democratic-led state Senate, posted on Twitter that “Bill Whittle’s racially infused rhetoric shouldn’t be tolerated in the Land and Party of Lincoln. Representative Ives should disinvite him from her event.” State Rep. Grant Wehrli, whose district is in DuPage County, called on Ives to cancel the event.)

http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/370944-some-state-dept-employees-retain-lawyers-amid-career-concerns-report
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Several State Department employees are retaining lawyers amid concerns that their careers are now being stalled because of past work on policies and initiatives championed by former President Obama. According to a Friday CNN report, frustration is growing among some at the department, who returned to Foggy Bottom from high-level assignments only to be put on low-level jobs such as responding to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Many of the workers who have been reassigned under the Trump administration previously worked in the offices of special envoys created during the Obama administration. But Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has over the past year moved to do away with some of the special offices created by Obama. Other offices were absorbed by regional bureaus, and some responsibilities were folded into the State Department’s Policy Planning Office, CNN reported. Officials who previously worked in those offices have been assigned to clerical tasks they say do not match up with their ranks. Some allege that they may be victims of political retribution.)

(THE LETTER: I was beyond shocked and appalled when I saw the letter to the editor in the Jan. 16 edition of the SJ-R from the pastor of the Abraham Lincoln UU Congregation in Springfield about Welcoming Cities. He has got to be kidding. I cannot believe in this day and age a pastor would tell the city of Springfield to adopt a Welcoming City resolution. Hasn’t he ever heard about separation of church and state? If he wants to welcome these people, then his congregation should pass the offering basket and open their homes to feed the illegal aliens and house the refugees. They should not expect taxpayers to foot the bill. We at Save Springfield, Illinois Facebook Group agree with what has been expressed already: The anti-hate resolution is in place and is enough. Let the aldermen get busy with the taxpayers’ concerns.)

NORTHWEST HERALD
— Algonquin Township officials in conflict over hire of 23-year-old deputy highway commissioner – ED KOMENDA (DIERSEN: IRS hired me when I was 22 years old as a GS-7 (currently $45,703/year) Revenue Officer. I had earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU the year before,  I had worked for Firestone Stores as a Retail Sales Manager for 7 months, I had passed the Federal Service Entrance Examination, and I had worked part-time for the Post Office for almost 3 years.  My first 6 months with IRS was classroom and on-the-job training.)
http://www.nwherald.com/2018/01/09/algonquin-township-officials-in-conflict-over-hire-of-23-year-old-deputy-highway-commissioner/a4av45g/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The political insider has agreements in place to earn $63,000 a year working full time as the chief of staff at Township Supervisor Charles Lutzow’s office, making $32 an hour – and another deal working part time as deputy highway commissioner at the Algonquin Township Highway Department, where he makes $33 an hour. That’s about $4 more an hour than the road district’s highest paid employee, Randy Voss, who has worked for the highway department for 44 years and makes $29.14 an hour. Provenzano’s roles in two offices have raised questions among township officials and road district employees who contend that his hiring was the product of patronage and cronyism. “I don’t feel somebody who is 22 or 23 years old should be getting all of this control,” Trustee Melissa Victor said. “I feel he was a patronage hire.” Provenzano is the son of former McHenry County Board member Nick Provenzano, who now works for U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, and the nephew of former Maine Township Highway Commissioner Robert Provenzano. The fresh-faced Republican insider helped city of McHenry Mayor Wayne Jett win election as his campaign manager, and he even worked as a field director for Gov. Bruce Rauner’s campaign operations in McHenry County. Ryan Provenzano and his father helped Lutzow run his campaign for township supervisor. Lutzow denied that Ryan Provenzano was hired as a political favor.)

https://www.federaltimes.com/pentagon/2018/01/10/pentagon-is-prepared-to-spend-over-900-million-in-first-audit/

David Norquist, the Pentagon’s comptroller, said Wednesday that the first steps of the long-awaited Pentagon audit are already underway. The audit itself will cost $367 million in FY18 — covering fees for the independent public accounting firms ($181 million) and infrastructure to support the audits ($186 million). That will help fund the roughly 1,200 auditors who will support the 24 individual audits that make up the overall effort.)
