ILLINOIS REVIEW
— OUTSTANDING: TWO IL GOP LAWMAKERS (John Cabello and David McSweeney) FILE EFFORT TO REPEAL SANCTUARY LAW
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/08/two-il-gop-lawmakers-file-effort-to-repeal-sanctuary-law.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE:  Two Illinois Republican state reps are very concerned about the immigration law enforcement measure Illinois Republican Governor Bruce Rauner signed into law Monday. State Reps. John Cabello (R-Rockford) and David McSweeney (R-Barrington) filed a measure Wednesday that would repeal a new law banning law enforcement in Illinois from stopping persons suspected of being in the U.S. illegally. “I swore to uphold the U.S. and Illinois Constitutions when I became a legislator,” Cabello told Illinois Review Wednesday. “As a member of law enforcement, I took a vow to uphold the law. I believe and trust in those oaths, and intend to do all I can to keep them.” The law many are referring to as the “sanctuary law” says law enforcement “shall not” detain or continue to detain any individual solely on the basis of any immigration detainer or non-judicial immigration warrant. Law enforcement “shall not” stop or arrest anyone solely based on the person’s immigration or citizenship status. They are, however, not banned from implementing a “valid” judge-issued federal warrant concerning any suspects. That is the definition of a sanctuary law, Cabello bill co-sponsor David McSweeney told Illinois Review. He pointed to Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ office comments on the law. “As the Attorney General has said, when cities and states refuse to help enforce immigration laws, our nation is less safe,” DOG spokesman Devin O’Malley told Fox News. “Failure to deport aliens who are convicted for criminal offenses puts whole communities at risk – especially immigrant communities in the very sanctuary jurisdictions that seek to protect the perpetrators.” The attorney general’s views were totally disregarded in a missive sent out by the Illinois Republican Party chairman Tim Schneider and County Chairman Association President Randy Pollard Monday night after Rauner signed the bill into law in front of an enthusiastic Latino audience in Chicago. “I think it is important that people know what Attorney General Sessions thinks about SB 31. Tim Schneider, the chief cheerleader for the ‘Capitol Compromise’ massive tax hike is now presenting more ‘alternative facts,'” McSweeney said. Cabello said lawmakers are supposed to do what’s best for those that are bearing the financial burden for decisions they make at the capitol. Not doing so will ultimately create consequences that political parties may not want, such as the base simply staying home in 2018. “People are telling me they’re so fed up with the party leaders and the governor that they’re just not going to go to the polls in 2018. That’s the opposite of what they should do,” Cabello, who co-chaired the Trump campaign in Illinois, said. “They need their voices to be heard loud and clear. Staying home is not an option.” Only one Republican House member – Bob Pritchard – voted in support of SB 31 on the House floor. Four Republicans – McConchie, McConnaughay, Nybo and Radogno – supported it in the Illinois Senate. Cabello and McSweeney’s repeal bill is HB 4091.)

http://www.russstewart.com/articles/2017/08-30-2017.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Tokenism, as an adjective defined by Webster’s Dictionary, is an act merely simulated, of slight or no account. As a noun, it is an act of accommodation to a demand by slight and merely formal concessions. For Democrats in Cook County, August’s slatemaking for their 2018 ticket was both a noun and an adjective, particularly regarding white men. Of the 16 candidates endorsed by the party for countywide offices, including judges, a grand total of three are while males, or about 18 percent. In the Democratic Party, men have hit the proverbial “glass ceiling.” Having a white man on the ticket is now of slight or no account. Of the remaining 13, seven are black, of which four are black women. That’s 44 percent. Seven are women. That’s another 44 percent. And two are Hispanics. That’s just 12 percent. As a noun, every key Democratic constituency got more than token accommodation. White males are no longer a key constituency. As expected, the Big Three – County Board president Toni Preckwinkle, House Speaker and state Democratic chairman Mike Madigan, and Alderman Ed Burke (14th) – did the dictating, with Burke picking the judges, and the 50 city and 30 suburban committeemen did the capitulating. Preckwinkle is expanding her empire exponentially, and is at the top of the heap. In the 2016 cycle, Preckwinkle engineered the slating of her county aide, Kim Foxx, for state’s attorney. She easily beat incumbent Anita Alvarez in the primary. She also worked with Madigan, dispatching another aide, Juliana Stratton, to run against independent-minded Ken Dunkin, who had the temerity to defy Madigan on several Illinois House votes. With a flood of Madigan money, Stratton buried Dunkin, and Madigan got another ally in Springfield. Now Preckwinkle and Madigan have worked again, plunking Stratton on J.B. Pritzker’s ticket for lieutenant governor in the March 2018 primary, and then delivering an endorsement of Pritzker for governor. Crafting a Pritzker-Stratton ticket sealed the deal, and Preckwinkle delivered all the black committeemen at slatemaking. And finally, another former Preckwinkle aide, Kim du Buclet, now a state representative, got slated for the 2-year Metropolitan Water Reclamation District term, beating a Hispanic backed by state Representative Luis Arroyo (D-3), and a longtime insider and donor associated with the North Shore Realtors. In the slating for county clerk, a job David Orr is relinquishing after 28 years, Recorder Karen Yarbrough, who is black and a Madigan protege, was slated. For Preckwinkle, despite the soda tax snafu, it’s “Veni, vidi, vici” – “I came, I saw, I conquered.”)

— Rauner’s General Counsel Dennis Murashko Escorted From Office a Week Before Planned Exit: Reports – Mary Ann Ahern  (DIERSEN: Have you been fired? In early 1971, after I had earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU in August of 1970, my Firestone Store boss in Chicago Heights ordered me to clean the white walls on display tires that were hanging on the walls of the store showroom while the store was open. That prompted me to tell him that I had accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile. He immediately flew into a rage, fired me, and threw me out of the store. Then, Oldsmobile withdrew its job offer saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. That directly resulted in my accepting a job offer from IRS. That Firestone Store boss had not hired me — Firestone Stores regional office had hired me. In my opinion, that Firestone Store boss disapproved of many of my demographics including my religion and my national origin, but most of all, he disapproved that I had avoided the draft.)

In addition to free individualized property tax reports, HDA members will receive free region-by-region property tax analyses. Membership is free.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/powerpost/rnc-set-to-condemn-white-supremacy-but-makes-no-mention-of-trumps-remarks/2017/08/25/cb8c56d2-899d-11e7-a50f-e0d4e6ec070a_story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Republican National Committee is expected to approve a resolution condemning racism and white supremacy at its summer meeting in Nashville — but don’t call it a rebuke of President Trump. “This has nothing to do with the president,” said the resolution’s sponsor, New Jersey RNC committeeman Bill Palatucci. “This is the RNC saying that racism and bigotry have no place in America.” Palatucci, an attorney who served as general counsel to Trump’s presidential transition committee, said that he began drafting the resolution on August 13, the day after a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville ended with the murder of a counterprotester. “The core issue was for us as RNC members to clearly and loudly denounce white supremacists,” explained Palatucci. “There can be no hesitation for the Party of Lincoln.” The resolution itself makes no mention of Trump or the president’s multiple reactions to Charlottesville, which led to three presidential advisory councils being disbanded as their members quit in protest. Instead, it states that “the racist beliefs of Nazis, the KKK, white supremacists and others are completely inconsistent with the Republican Party’s platform,” and urges that “swift and certain justice be meted out to domestic terrorists.” Most of the remaining text focuses on the history of the party, and the need for colorblind policy and politics. “We recall that the Republican Party was founded in the struggle against slavery and a rejection of the racial beliefs underlying the institution of slavery,” the resolution reads. “The Republican Party subsequently led the fight to assure all human beings have equal standing before the law, promoting instead the foundational idea that each person be judged as an individual on merit and not on the color of skin or other circumstance of birth.” The RNC’s resolution nonetheless breaks from the president by condemning white nationalists specifically and not dovetailing into criticism of the left. It’s the latest of several Republican responses that have taken that tone, but have often been buried by coverage of the president. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel gave the party’s first official response to Charlottesville at an ill-timed August 14 event in Detroit designed to demonstrate the party’s ongoing outreach to black voters. “White supremacy, neo-Nazi, KKK and hate speech and bigotry are not welcome and [do] not have a home in the Republican Party,” McDaniel told reporters, as black Republicans waited for a closed-press roundtable to begin. “This isn’t a partisan issue. This is an American issue.” Over the next 10 days, Republicans in every state fended off questions about the president’s markedly different response to Charlottesville — condemning violence on “many sides,” attacking the “alt-left,” and occasionally being congratulated by white nationalist leaders for his tone. It was agonizing for Republicans who had tried, before Trump, to broaden the party’s appeal to non-white voters. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), the highest profile black Republican in Congress, told Vice News that Trump’s “moral authority” had been compromised by his Charlottesville response. Michael Steele, who as the first black RNC chairman had apologized for the GOP’s racial politics, said after Charlottesville that his party was making a grave error by defending Trump. “In 2009, I declared the Southern Strategy of the GOP was dead. It was over,” Steele said on an August 15 episode of his Sirius XM radio show. “I am sad to say that in the course of the 2016 campaign, that strategy was revived. And now this seminal moment faces this party, where you’re either going to kill this bastard right off the top, just get rid of the Southern Strategy or you’re going to own it in perpetuity.” Outside of the Opryland complex, other Republicans were engaged in an argument about what else the party needed to do. On Tuesday, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) told reporters that a bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest, the founder of the Ku Klux Klan, should be removed from the state capitol complex. But the leading Republican candidates for governor, including Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.), stopped short of that, suggesting that the issue needed further debate in the Republican-controlled state legislature. And further away, the leadership of the Democratic National Committee accused Republicans of distracting from a crisis that they’d enabled long before Trump’s victory. “The Republican Party, led by President Trump, has cultivated a culture of hate through their rhetoric and policies,” said DNC spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa. “A vote on a resolution doesn’t fix the systemic problems within the Republican party. When will they take responsibility, denounce racism and stop pursuing divisive policies like voter identification laws and extreme immigration reforms?” Republican officials, who entered the Nashville meeting celebrating a historic level of control in Washington and states, said that their resolution would at least clear up where they stood and where the president needed to arrive. “I think the vote on the resolution will be unanimous and I support it,” said Steve Duprey, an RNC committeeman from New Hampshire. “I do think it is useful to remind America that our party condemns all of these hate groups, and that while the President may have not articulated it as well as he could have initially, he too has been forceful in condemning racists, supremacists, the alt right, Nazis, and other hate groups.”)

http://www.latimes.com/nation/nationnow/la-na-republican-national-commitee-20170825-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: And though the vote was unanimous, some members had grumbled that the resolution was unnecessary and reflected unnecessary defensiveness. “It’s amazing that we have been lured into this argument that we’re not racists. It’s absurd,” said Colorado Republican Chairman Jeff Hays. “Why would we feel compelled to do that?”)

KIPLINGER
— Worst Jobs for the Future: Legislator
http://www.kiplinger.com/slideshow/business/T012-S001-worst-jobs-for-the-future-2017/index.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Total number of jobs: 56,514  Projected job growth, 2016-2026: 1.5%  Median annual salary: $20,500  Typical education: Bachelor’s degree  It’s an ugly time to be in politics. The number of positions for local, state and federal legislators rarely changes, so competition can be fierce as we’ve all seen on the national stage. And despite what you might think about fat-cat politicos, government paychecks for the majority of elected officials are actually pretty light. On the bright side, opportunities to enter the field arise with every election, and pay for the top 10% in the field goes up to above $95,000 a year. Alternate Career  You can still affect change by pursuing a career as a social and community service manager. (And you can always get back into politics from this career path; it worked for Barack Obama.) Like many of our best jobs for the future, this occupation benefits from the aging population. As boomers increasingly lean on social services, such as adult day care and meal-delivery programs, managers of such businesses will be in greater demand. In fact, the number of these managers is expected to grow 15.7% by 2026 from 149,920 currently. Plus, the median salary is much more generous at $62,349 a year. You need at least a bachelor’s degree in social work, urban studies, public administration or a related field to get started. But reaching these managerial heights typically also requires relevant work experience of five years or more. And some employers prefer applicants with master’s degrees.)

— Ten Republicans Urge Oversight Committee Chair Not to Cut Retirement Benefits for Feds – Erich Wagner  (DIERSEN: How many Republican federal employees and Republican federal retirees live in your precinct, your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, and in Illinois?  How viciously are they targeted?)
http://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits/2017/07/republicans-pen-letter-disavowing-retirement-cuts-feds/139794/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It also would . . . reduce COLAs for Civil Service Retirement System workers by 0.5 percent. The Republicans who wrote Wednesday’s letter cited the “significant numbers of federal workers” in their districts, and said those people “have already sacrificed” in the name of deficit reduction. Signatories were Reps. Rob Bishop, R-Utah; Tom Cole, R-Okla.; Rob Wittman, R-Va.; Chris Smith, R-N.J.; Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa.; Barbara Comstock, R-Va.; Walter Jones, R-N.C.; Frank LoBiondo, R-N.J.; Peter King, R-N.Y.; and Austin Scott, R-Ga. “Our strongest objection is how the proposals break a promise to employees and retirees who have based career planning on longstanding promised benefit calculations,” the lawmakers wrote. “They and their families don’t deserve to be treated in this cavalier manner. No one needs to remind us of the deficit and the debt problem our nation faces, but federal employees are an easy political target.”)

— Who is the real public today? – Dennis Marek  (DIERSEN: Are/were you rich?  All during the almost 30 years that I worked for the federal government, my Democrat superiors, Democrat supervisors, Democrat co-workers, and Democrat subordinates demonized me, denigrated me, and condemned me as being rich. They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran.)
http://www.daily-journal.com/opinion/columnists/local/dennis-marek-who-is-the-real-public-today/article_dee873ef-db72-531b-86cb-65bf3cafd71d.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As I, and most of America, get more nauseated by the political scene each day, something else arises. We, of Illinois, are the victims of a state with little hope. Last month, it was announced Illinois ranks 50th in the financial stability of all the states. We have no budget as I write this. We have no cooperation between the governor and the legislature. We have no money. All we have is self-righteous rich men and women running our state into utter bankruptcy. Is the general public rich or poor? I suppose that depends on the definition of rich. Obviously, this also depends on the person who is defining the term. If a person is on Social Security, public assistance, or is unemployed, someone earning $30,000 is rich. If one is a professional earning $150,000 per year, then the multimillionaire is rich. And if you are Gov. Rauner who has millions, then Bill Gates is rich. It is all in the point of view. So, let’s be fair. Let’s say the well-off person is from a family that nets after all deductions and itemizations more than $50,000. Then, let’s say the present budget impasse between Michael Madigan and Rauner is on the proposed increase in the Illinois income tax rate. The House, with the help of 15 Republicans, passed Madigan’s bill increasing the state income tax for individuals from 3.75 to 4.9 percent and the corporate tax from 5.25 to 7 percent. We are a broke state. Do we tax more or spend less to get out of debt? That is one of the major differences between the political parties today. Democrats want to tax the rich more and keep programs going. The Republicans want to “lower” everyone’s taxes (mostly theirs) and cut spending everywhere. So, who is right? Rauner wants to redo the worker’s compensation system, something that was fought over forever 50-plus years ago. Rauner wants to cut Medicaid and fees charged by doctors. He wants to leave Illinois taxes low. Remember, not that long ago, we actually paid 5 percent state income tax. Let’s look at who really gets help if we do not raise state taxes. Take a $50,000 family. If the tax stays at 3.75 percent, the family pays $1,875 in Illinois tax. If it goes to 4.9 percent, the family pays $2,450 or $575 more. But if you are in the 20 percent Federal tax bracket and itemize, you save $115 on your Federal tax because your state income tax is another deduction. So, this bill that passed the House cost this family $460. Yet, it is predicted across the state such an increase would bring the state $4.3 billion. The increase in the corporate rate from 5.25 percent to 7 percent would bring in another $460 million. So, the middle income family pays an added $460 per year. Who do you think really pays the balance of the $4.3 billion? The super-rich. The Rauners and the Pritzkers. The very people who want to run the State of Illinois.)

FREEDOM’S JOURNAL
— THE COST OF MEDICAID – Star Parker  (DIERSEN: According to Democrats, if you are not on Medicaid, you are rich.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The number of Americans enrolled in Medicaid has increased from 29 million in 1990 to 73 million today — an increase of 252 percent over a period when the nation’s population increased 30 percent. Total spending on Medicaid today is $574 billion, 275 percent above the $209 billion of 2000. Medicaid amounts to about 40 percent of the total spending on the 10 largest means-tested federal government programs targeted at low-income Americans. According to the Congressional Budget Office, spending on these programs has tripled as a percentage of our GDP over the last 40 years. Does all this mean we are becoming a more fair and compassionate nation? That might have been the intention. But if we honestly look at what is happening, we will see things have gone badly astray.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/26/upshot/best-chance-to-retake-the-house-8-types-of-gop-districts-to-watch.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Suburban Survivors: Mike Coffman, Colo. 6; Erik Paulsen, Minn. 3; Ryan Costello, Pa. 6; Peter Roskam, Ill. 6; Pat Meehan, Pa. 7; Rodney Frelinghuysen, N.J. 11; Dave Reichert, Wash. 8; John Katko, N.Y. 24; Frank LoBiondo, N.J. 2  Democrats often look at the seats where Mrs. Clinton won and assume those are the easiest seats to win in 2018. But any Democrat familiar with the names in this section knows it’s not so easy. These battle-tested incumbents generally represent classic battleground districts, like the suburbs around Denver or Philadelphia. Yet they have consistently run far ahead of the national party’s performance in presidential elections. These seats would instantly be among the top Democratic targets in the country — if the Republican incumbents retired. As it is, none of these incumbents will be easy for Democrats to defeat. A few, like Frank LoBiondo of New Jersey, might escape without a competitive race at all. But most of these representatives will probably find themselves in highly competitive races. In a tough year for Republicans, several would probably lose. But many would probably survive, despite their district’s Democratic lean in presidential elections. Many of these representatives even survived the big Democratic waves in 2006 and 2008. If Washington’s Dave Reichert wins re-election, he will be the only Republican to have won in 2006 and 2008 in a district carried by Al Gore and John Kerry, and to win re-election in 2018 in a district carried by Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton.  Most have survived in part by amassing a moderate voting record to please their moderate constituents. True to form, six of them voted “no” on the Republican health care bill, including Mr. Reichert. The three who voted for the bill — Peter Roskam, Erik Paulsen and Rodney Frelinghuysen — might now find it harder to pitch themselves as moderate voices in Washington.)

The total is roughly the equivalent to the seating capacity of New Orleans’ Superdome. Another way to look at it is that one in every 4,500 Americans now has an ultra-high net worth, defined as $30 million or more. The surge was driven large by a strengthening U.S. dollar, which in turn drove equities, Wealth-X says.)
