PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Rauner and our Illinois Republican future – Christopher Robling
http://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511244022-rauner-and-our-illinois-republican-future
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I think Jeanne Ives, or any of another five or six party luminaries, defeats Rauner in the primary on announcement.  His money will not matter. His flannel shirts will not attract. His commercials will persuade no one. He may attack Jeanne, the way he did Aaron and Dan. But for what? Goodness knows. Regardless, it will reduce his vote, not hers. Attacking a Wheaton mom who was among the first female West Point grads, a decorated logistics officer in the U.S. Army, who has earned her spurs in Springfield, worked with Democrats to pass important bills for all of us, and who has never strayed from her stated political beliefs in conservatism and rooting out Illinois corruption? The only campaign person who might recommend such a course probably led Mark Kirk’s re-elect effort. I know, Rauner bought the party. I do not think it matters. I know the State Central Committee is urged to hold the line. But, for what? For this? The party of Reagan? To this we have sunk? What have we delivered to the people – all of the people, from the South Side to Southern Illinois, from Western Illinois University to Northwestern – what have those folks gotten from Rauner and us that is worthy of us holding anything for him? Does any one of us believe that Rauner will get to the re-apportionment table? Or, if one thinks he will, on what basis might one think Rauner would deliver the best map possible for Illinoisans under those circumstances? Instead, for this all-encompassing task, Rauner’s petty personalization against Madigan has shown him uniquely unqualified. I thought Bruce Rauner was a fresh breeze. I thought he was technocrat who would save our finances. I did not expect a conservative, per se, but after his pitch to Jack Roeser, I was promised Bruce would never be a liberal. I got a whopping tax hike, Sanctuary State, Transgender Birth Certificates and taxpayer-funded abortion on demand through nine-months of pregnancy. What is so horrid about Rauner’s incumbency, and what is fatal to his cause, is that his screw-ups repel the reasonable voters, neither stridently “D,” nor “R,” who simply do not want to give everything to the Democrats in November 2018. These folks are the key to 2018. They are not partisans. They are our only path to the reapportionment conversation. I believe Rauner has irrevocably lost them for his serial incompetence. Rauner cannot be our future because of his past 32 months. Will Jeanne Ives, or Dan Cronin, or Peter Roskam, or David McSweeney, or Peter Breen or someone else get those voters? At this moment, I think each would beat Bruce on announcement, and each would qualify as a safe harbor for November voters who have had enough one-party domination. Maybe that is the slogan: “End One-Party Domination, Defeat Rauner.” Count me in. Now, who is the candidate?)

WIREPOINTS
— “Whatever” clip encapsulates the new Rauner – Mark Glennon
http://www.wirepoints.com/whatever-clip-encapsulates-the-new-rauner/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When asked what he thought about all the chatter on a primary challenge from GOP Rep. Jeanne Ives, Governor Rauner had only a simple “whatever.” Unfortunately, that’s emblematic of the what Bruce Rauner has become. This is not the same Bruce Rauner who, at least through his primary run four years ago, was informed, substantive, vigorous and principled. Now, he stumbles from day to day with no purpose, unprepared and uninformed, offering little more than glib platitudes delivered with a smile. Nobody in either party in the General Assembly trusts him, and he has largely turned his office over to his wife, who holds fundamentally different views than those her husband ran on. He has lost it, and dropping out of the race is looking more and more like the right way for him to go.)

— Worry About DACA’s Fate Triggers Anxiety, Depression In Immigrants – MAUREEN FOERTSCH MCKINNEY (DIERSEN: What things have caused anxiety and/or depression for you?  For me, they include adverse actions that my Democrat superiors took against me. My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

They had few look-at-me flashing lights or listen-to-me bells. He would sit in front of them for hours, often wagering more than $100 a hand. The way he played — instinctually, decisively, calculatingly, silently, with little movement beyond his shifting eyes and nimble fingers — meant he could play several hundred hands an hour. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republicans are split over whether to support Gov. Bruce Rauner after his decision to sign the abortion funding measure, House Bill 40. Wheaton State Rep. Jeanne Ives has been approached by conservatives to consider opposing Rauner in the March primary, but for now, she is noncommittal. “I’m not actively pursuing it, I’m letting it kind of boil up and we’ll see what happens,” Ives said. “I’m hoping somebody comes forward to run against him and we take him out as Republicans. Or I’m hoping that he decides on his own, ‘Look my base is eroded beneath me, there’s no chance of me winning because my base is going to stay home.'” Ives, a West Point graduate, has served in the Illinois House for five years. She said she also disagrees with the governor’s approval of the education funding bill and the sanctuary state law, both signed earlier this year.)

https://illinoisfamily.org/life/illinois-gop-congressional-caucus-responds-hb-40/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Great news from the congressional front!  In light of the possibility that Governor Bruce Rauner may renege on his commitment to veto HB 40—the bill that would require taxpayer-funding of abortions through Medicaid and state employee insurance plans through the entire 9 months of pregnancies—and the moral gravity of such an obscene (and costly) requirement, Illinois Family Institute Executive Director David Smith sent a letter to Illinois’ Republican congressmen requesting their help in persuading Governor Rauner to veto HB 40. Earlier today, U.S. Congressmen Peter Roskam, John Shimkus, Randy Hultgren, Adam Kinzinger, Rodney Davis, Mike Bost, and Darin LaHood sent a letter to Governor Rauner urging him to do just that:)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Former White House strategist Steve Bannon told conservatives Sunday at a rally that they needn’t worry about Democrats but instead should focus on the “corrupt and incompetent Republican establishment.” Bannon spoke to about 400 people at a St. Louis hotel during the rally hosted by Phyllis Schlafly Eagles, a spinoff of the conservative think tank Eagle Forum that Schlafly founded and led until her death last year at age 92. The rally came at a tense time in St. Louis, where nearly 200 people have been arrested in protest since Sept. 15, when a judge acquitted a white former police officer in the fatal shooting of a black suspect. A small group of protesters stood outside the hotel with signs, including large letters that spelled out “Racist.”)

— More than 100 people protest Wheaton landlord over ‘back to Vietnam’ sign – Justin Kmitch  (DIERSEN: Because I refuse to hate Sandberg, Sandberg-haters hate me. http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20170923/more-than-100-people-protest-wheaton-landlord-over-back-to-vietnam-sign
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The normally bustling corner of Front and Main streets in downtown Wheaton was even busier Saturday afternoon as more than 100 sign-waving protesters gathered to protest a local landlord. The group’s members, led by longtime Wheaton resident Jessica Prewitt, were speaking out against local businessman Robert Sandberg and a sign he posted two years ago inside the front door of a former Vietnamese restaurant that says the owners “went back to Vietnam.” The groundswell developed after Prewitt Wednesday posted a picture of the sign on social media. “To me, that sign says, ‘You’re not welcome here, get out,'” Prewitt said Saturday outside Sandberg’s men’s clothing store. “Wheaton is a very tolerant, diverse community. There’s just no room for that here.” Protesters lined the corner in front of Sandberg’s store, at times blocking his front door, holding signs that read “Diversity is Delightful,” “Be Kind,” “Give Hate no Home” and “Wheaton Welcomes All.” Kate McElwee brought her two young daughters for what she called a “teaching moment.” “This is so much bigger than Mr. Sandberg versus the restaurant owners,” she said. “This is about us peacefully using our freedom of speech to speak out against an enemy of diversity in our community.” Some people not associated with the protest said they felt obligated to go buy something from Sandberg because they felt he was being treated unfairly. Others yelled things like “fake news!” and “say no to DACA” as they drove east on Front Street. Inside his store, Sandberg defended his right to keep the sign posted until he receives a handwritten apology from the owners of Luong-Loi, who he says skipped out on their rent and owe him $17,000. The operators of the restaurant, which eventually reopened across the street from its former location, deny on Facebook that they have any unmet obligations to Sandberg. “Look, what these snowflakes are doing out here is petty. I’m no racist,” Sandberg said of the protesters. “I have black friends and I’m actively supporting (former member of Congress from Florida) Allen West, who is black and a great, great man. This is a dispute between me and a former tenant who lied to me and who owes me money. Now these people have people calling my phone and telling me I’m a racist.” Sandberg said he posted the sign because he grew tired of people coming into his store and asking him what happened to the Vietnamese restaurant that had been there for about 30 years. And, he’s willing to take it down, with conditions. “It could be taken down yesterday. All you have to do is have them give me a letter saying that they lied to me. They told me wrong. They didn’t go back to Vietnam,” Sandberg said. “Give me a reason you did what you did or just say, ‘We told you wrong. We made a mistake.'” Luong-Loi serves lunch and dinner in a building formerly owned by Sandberg at 111-113 N. Main St. The city gained ownership of the long-vacant property in 2006 after six years of condemnation proceedings against Sandberg. In late 2014, the city council approved the sale of the building to the restaurateurs for $160,111. The restaurant reopened about a year later after extensive renovations of the building’s facade. Luong-Loi employees present Saturday declined to comment but pointed to a statement released Friday on their Facebook page. “On behalf of the Luong-Loi family, I want to thank Jessica and everyone here for their support and concern on this matter. Thank you to all our customers, the City of Wheaton, and the entire community for your continued support of our family and business,” the statement reads. “As for Mr. Sandberg and the ‘We went back to Vietnam’ sign: We want to thank Mr. Sandberg for allowing Luong-Loi to lease his property for the past 25-plus years. We have no other obligations to Mr. Sandberg.”)

The more that you support the Republican Party platform, the Illinois Republican Party platform, and the Milton Township Republican Central Committee resolution against video gambling, the harder that they work against you. They certainly worked/work very hard against me. Needless-to-say, they should not be allowed to seek or hold any kind of government or political office as a Republican.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Durkin hiring of former Rauner aide living with reporter raises conflict questions – W.J. Kennedy (DIERSEN: As the Illinois Editor for GOPUSA since 2000, I have always fully disclosed my political activities. I have been a Republican Precinct Committeeman since 1999. I was the TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman 2005-2012, a Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member 2003-2011, the Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster 2008-2010 and 2000-2004, an Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member 2003-2007, and an American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member 2001-2004. I served on the 2008 Illinois Republican Party (IRP) Platform and Resolutions Committee and I attended the 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016 IRP State Conventions as a delegate.)
http://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511221641-durkin-hiring-of-former-rauner-aide-living-with-reporter-raises-conflict-questions
(FROM THE ARTICLE: House Minority Leader Jim Durkin’s (R-Western Springs) hiring of Michael Mahoney, a former aide to Gov. Bruce Rauner, has the potential to cause some conflict of interest problems for WTTW, the primary public broadcasting member station in Chicago. The news of Mahoney’s hiring was reported in a Sept. 17 story in Prairie State Wire. According to the real estate listing site BlockShopper, Mahoney lives with WTTW statehouse reporter Amanda Vinicky in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago. “Amanda adheres to our News Standards which require balance, fairness and disclosure,” Mary Field, the station’s executive producer of “Chicago Tonight,” wrote in an email in response to being asked how WTTW would maintain balance in its coverage of the General Assembly. “I believe her works speaks for itself in that regard.” The Prairie State Wire story said that the hiring of Mahoney was being pushed by one of the Springfield’s top lobbyists and deal makers, Nancy Kimme, and David Walsh, Durkin’s top aide. Mahoney, 31, would replace Andrew Freiheit, 46, of Wheaton, who worked for the Illinois House Republicans, including Durkin’s predecessors Lee Daniels and Tom Cross, for more than two decades. Sources said that the move was precipitated by staff changes in Rauner’s office, where Kimme once had unrivaled access to information on state contracts, hiring and legislation. That access has reportedly been shut down with the departure of aides close to her, among them former Chief of Staff Richard Goldberg, Campaign Manager Mike Zolnierowicz, Communications Director Lance Trover and Research Director Edward Murphy. “She (Kimme) needs a new way in,” a lobbyist familiar with the situation told Prairie State Wire. “Durkin and Walsh are looking to help.” Commenting on an earlier story about the appearance of conflicts of interests when reporters are in relationships with people they report on, Prof. Adam Penenberg of New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute — who garnered national attention in 1998 for unmasking serial fabricator Stephen Glass of the New Republic — said that many ethics codes in journalism warn of any appearance of a conflict of interest. “One good rule governing potential conflicts of interest is whether a reporter might pull his or her punches,” he said. “Write a critical story and your spouse could, potentially, suffer the consequences. She could even get fired and result in a significant loss of income.” The Associated Press, in its “News Values and Principles” for Reporters, states: “Editorial employees are expected to be scrupulous in avoiding any political activity, whether they cover politics regularly or not. Non-editorial employees must refrain from political activity unless they obtain approval from a manager.” It also urges discussing any potential conflicts with one’s manager. “And a supervisor must be informed when a spouse — or other members of an employee’s household — has any ongoing involvement in political causes, either professionally or personally,” it reads.)
