(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s been a good week for State Rep. Jeanne Ives, as she picked up another endorsement in her campaign to unseat Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner. In a tweet, Ives announced that she had won the endorsement of the Wheeling Republican Party in landslide fashion, winning 90 percent of the vote on Saturday. According to Ives, there were more Republican votes cast in Wheeling Township alone than in a staggering 89 of Illinois’ 102 counties during the 2014 primary season. Her victory comes just days after the Chicago Republican Party handed her an overwhelming victory in a straw poll. Ives beat Rauner 17-3 in that vote, which was conducted by the party’s Central Committee in Chicago.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Rauner reminds abortion foes he’s got deep pockets to help them – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-bruce-rauner-abortion-campaign-contributions-20171218-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facing a primary challenge amid Republican unrest over his expansion of taxpayer-funded abortions, Gov. Bruce Rauner is offering a new answer to why abortion opponents should support him: Look at what his wallet has done. “I am the strongest supporter of candidates for office who are pro-life. Nobody has worked harder to elect pro-life Republicans than I have and I remind everybody of that. I have fought hard,” Rauner said Friday on WJPF 1340-AM in Herrin when asked what he was telling angry social conservatives. “I supported Bill Brady when he ran. I’m supporting Erika Harold,” the governor said of the unsuccessful 2010 GOP candidate for governor and current Republican contender for attorney general, respectively. “I’m supporting legislators who are pro-life. I am a strong ally and strong supporter for pro-life candidates.” During his interview with the radio station, which bills itself as “The Voice of Southern Illinois,” Rauner did not explain his reasons for signing the legislation or his personal values in support of abortion rights — a motivating factor behind the Republican primary challenge he now faces from state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton. When Rauner signed the controversial abortion measure in September, he acknowledged he had “voted for and supported public officials and public servants who are pro-life.” But the governor also said by signing the measure, he was “being true to my values and my views. I have always been true to those.” David Yepsen, the former director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, said he doubts Rauner’s latest explanation will satisfy social conservatives — particularly Downstate. “I don’t think this is going to wash with pro-life Republicans. Rauner’s just coming off as being all over the map on this, trying to have it both ways and it’s already earned him a primary. He needs to come up with a better answer,” Yepsen said. To be sure, Rauner, a wealthy former private equity investor, has a history of giving to Republican candidates who oppose abortion rights, including Mitt Romney, Jon Huntsman and Tim Pawlenty in the 2012 battle for the GOP presidential nomination. But Rauner also has given money to GOP candidates who support abortion rights, including Carl DeMaio of San Deigo, a gay Republican who unsuccessfully ran for Congress, and, closer to home, former U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and former North Shore congressman Robert Dold. Previously, Rauner contributed to Democratic candidates and causes backing abortion rights, including the Democratic National Committee in 2000 and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2003. In 2001, Rauner gave to U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s congressional fund, and then-Montana Sen. Max Baucus. The governor and wife Diana Rauner also were listed as $50,000 sponsors of a Planned Parenthood Illinois fundraiser in April. At the time, Gov. Rauner had vowed to veto the abortion-expansion legislation. State Rep. David McSweeney, a frequent critic of Rauner who has endorsed Ives for governor, said that in the southern Illinois interview, it sounded to an uninformed listener that Rauner was opposed to abortion rights. “He happened to be on a very popular southern Illinois radio station and of course down there he told everybody he’s pro-life. That’s what you would actually think if you didn’t know the real story,” said McSweeney, a Barrington Hills Republican. “It’s another example of him going into different places and saying different things. Do you think he would ever say that to a Planned Parenthood meeting?” McSweeney asked. The lawmaker also said it’s another sign that for Rauner, “the issue is that it’s all about the money again.” Rauner pumped millions of dollars into GOP legislative campaigns last year, in part earning the allegiance of rank-and-file Republican lawmakers until earlier this year. Ives’ campaign did not respond to a request for comment Monday.)
— Will Rauner’s re-election campaign be, ‘Negative, negative, negative, negative?’ – Kim Janssen
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chicagoinc/ct-met-miller-rauner-1219-chicago-inc-20171218-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner touted his top 10 accomplishments of 2017 in a news release Monday. But not everyone was buying the spin. Veteran Springfield journalist and Capitol Fax Publisher Rich Miller brought down the house at a City Club of Chicago downtown where he was asked by an audience member how Rauner can win re-election in 2018. “In a wave like this, he’s not going to win by touting his accomplishments,” Miller said to widespread laughter in a packed room of business and civic leaders that it’s fair to say tilted heavily Democratic. “He has to run the most negative campaign anyone in this room has ever seen, period. He has to drive down the black turnout, the woman turnout, Latino turnout, young people turnout — he’s got to drive them all down,” he said of discouraging voters most likely to cast a ballot for the Democrat running against Rauner. “The only way to do that — the only way to do that — is to be unbelievably negative, so negative that you just gasp at the TV ads.” Short of Twitter going out of business and “solving a lot of Republican problems” by silencing President Donald Trump’s social media output, “that’s what (Rauner) has to do,” Miller said, citing the higher than expected black voter turnout in Alabama’s recent special election as evidence of an energized Democratic base. “Negative, negative, negative, negative … what Rod (Blagojevich) did to Judy (Baar Topinka) times 50,” Miller said, referring to the expensive 2006 campaign ads in which Blagojevich painted the late Topinka as irresponsible by repeating the phrase “What’s she thinking?” over and over again. Rauner’s office didn’t respond to Miller’s comments. For the record, the list of Rauner accomplishments it was touting included passing education funding, the scholarship tax credit program, the Clean Energy Jobs Act, pushing EDGE tax credits, the state’s opioid task force, vetoing a “Madigan Tax Hike” and “ethical government and fighting corruption.”)

http://wtax.com/news/101101-rich-miller-is-on-the-loose/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The people following state politics and government the closest read the Capitol Fax web site, and the people at the City Club heard from the man behind that one-man operation Monday. Rich Miller knows not to make predictions, but he has seen enough Illinois government and politics to say this: “(Gov. Bruce) Rauner or whomever the Democrat is will be left with another mess,” Miller said before raising his voice. “We really suck at this governing thing in Illinois!” And in the Republican primary, where’s the money? “We don’t know yet where (Republican uberdonor) Richard Uihlein is going to stand on this,” Miller said. “You pretty much can’t take any more money from him now, because (as a donor to (the U.S. Senate campaign of Alabama’s Roy Moore) he’s kind of tainted. He put a lot of money behind an alleged pedophile.” Miller, whose annual holiday address to the City Club is also a toy drive for Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, says so far Gov. Rauner is ignoring his March 20 challenger, State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton).)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Rauner vs. Ives: A nasty war for control of the Illinois GOP – GREG HINZ
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20171204/BLOGS02/171209960/illinois-republican-governor-race-war-for-control-of-the-party
(FROM THE ARTICLE: She described him as a man who “sold out” to Chicago Democrats, not only allowing a tax hike to pass but also signing laws making Illinois a haven for illegal immigrants and allowing taxpayer funds to pay for abortion. He laughed the charges off as “baloney”—then said in so many words that he, and not she, is the person who can keep state government on the path of honesty and stop it from totally being turned over to the control of Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan. There wasn’t much subtlety today as—with everybody’s nominating petitions finally filed—the GOP primary race for governor started off with a bang. Incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner and challenger state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton are ready to rumble. Ives, a West Point graduate who has become a champion of fiscal and economic conservatives, started off the exchange with an internet video post in which she labeled the incumbent “Benedict Rauner,” echoing a line first used by Illinois Policy Institute chief John Tillman. It’s a clear sign that, in the era of Donald Trump, Ives intends to tap into the same sort of populist fervor against “the ruling class” that made him president. Ives said she believed Rauner four years ago when he promised to shake up the state. But she added: “The tough-talking dude on a Harley with no agenda turned out to be an empty Carhartt jacket. We were promised a conservative reform governor. Instead we got an Ivy League gender studies professor.” In a later news conference, Ives toned it down a few notches, but argued that Illinois needs a chief executive to keep a lid on taxes in a way that Rauner has not. The first three items on her agenda: lowering property taxes, attracting more jobs and going after corruption at every level of government. Rauner allies argue he has tried to do all of those things, only to be blocked by large Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, and by some Republicans who broke party ranks to back the increase in the state income tax. Rauner himself, meeting with reporters shortly after Ives, shrugged off her attacks, as well as a nasty article last week in the National Review, a leading conservative publication, declaring him the worst GOP governor in the country. Regardless of what that “political hit piece” said, Rauner contends, the truth is that it was Madigan who blocked the kind of reforms he wants. And, he continued, he is better positioned to hold off the speaker and whomever turns out to be the Democratic nominee for governor. His message to GOP primary voters: “I will win the general election. I will win it, and if we don’t win it, nothing else matters.” He was referring to upcoming reapportionment after the 2020 census, and Democratic talk about implementing a graduated income tax the governor said would hit many middle-class families. Asked if he was saying Ives is too conservative to win a general election, Rauner gave the same answer—”I will win”—eventually adding, “I have the best chance of anybody in the state to win the general election.” He then went on to rip Madigan, saying the speaker “has become a millionaire” by preserving a “rigged” property tax system that benefits Madigan’s property tax appeals law firm. On paper, Illinois history would suggest that while firebrand conservatives such as Ives draw a lot of attention, in the end, relative moderates prevail in what never has been a leading conservative state. That certainly was the case with prior Govs. Jim Thompson and Jim Edgar, who fought off conservatives. Beyond that, Rauner has the financial resources to spend whatever it takes. Ives has collected around $300,000 so far with contributions from investor Peter Huizenga, railroad asset lessor Vince Kolber, Chicago Bears owner Virginia McCaskey and others. Rauner had $65.5 million in his main campaign fund as of Sept. 30. She could even that up somewhat if wealthy conservative businessman Richard Uihlein switches sides and supports her; Ives said today she’d accept funds from him, despite his financial role in backing Alabama Senate hopeful Roy Moore. But it’s far from clear that will happen. On the other hand, as Trump has shown, many of the old political rules are in question now. The state’s GOP establishment is not what it was, with some congressmen and other leaders so far sitting out the race. Will Rauner go negative in a big way if polling shows Ives is pulling ahead? It’s too soon to tell in what’s shaping up as a lively, perhaps all-out battle for control of the Illinois Republican Party.)

— How America deals with Hate Speech – James Kirk Wall
http://www.chicagonow.com/an-atheist-in-illinois/2017/10/how-america-deals-with-hate-speech/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In 1995 the KKK came to Wheaton, IL Wheaton is a Western suburb of Chicago next to Naperville. In 1995 the Ku Klux Klan legally obtained a permit to demonstrate in the county court house. So what do you do when this happens in your town? An organization of hate and ignorance which has historically caused great suffering to a great number of people. This is how it was handled in Wheaton. Citizens of Mexican heritage organized a 26-piece mariachi band to perform on the common grounds. There were also protestors. If you came to this event you could stand with the protestors and chant, “Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! KKK has got to go!” Or you could hang out with the band and do a little La Bamba. The best case scenario for a KKK rally is that nobody shows up. Having not that many people there and a mariachi band wasn’t a bad response. That organization hasn’t been back to Wheaton since. There was a police presence to keep the peace. To make sure people were protected from harmful actions, not offensive words.)

WIREPOINTS
— “Whatever” clip encapsulates the new Rauner – Mark Glennon
http://www.wirepoints.com/whatever-clip-encapsulates-the-new-rauner/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When asked what he thought about all the chatter on a primary challenge from GOP Rep. Jeanne Ives, Governor Rauner had only a simple “whatever.” Unfortunately, that’s emblematic of the what Bruce Rauner has become. This is not the same Bruce Rauner who, at least through his primary run four years ago, was informed, substantive, vigorous and principled. Now, he stumbles from day to day with no purpose, unprepared and uninformed, offering little more than glib platitudes delivered with a smile. Nobody in either party in the General Assembly trusts him, and he has largely turned his office over to his wife, who holds fundamentally different views than those her husband ran on. He has lost it, and dropping out of the race is looking more and more like the right way for him to go.)

CBS2
— Abortion Opponents Say Gov. Rauner Betrayed Them – Bob Roberts
http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2017/09/30/abortion-opponents-say-gov-rauner-betrayed-them/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Young opponents of abortion gathered outside the Thompson Center to denounce Gov. Bruce Rauner and the new law he signed this week that provides for taxpayer financing of abortion. GOP politicians called Rauner’s decision “political suicide.” One ally called  him “Benedict Rauner” in a Facebook post. The governor agreed to be scratched from a southwest suburban GOP picnic. The youthful anti-abortion protesters who gathered at the Thompson Center called the governor’s decision to sign HB-40 a grave disappointment. David Cordaro is with the organization Students For Life. “Governor Rauner betrayed us. He betrayed the Republican party. And he betrayed the pro-life generation,” said Cordaro. He is not backing any specific candidates yet. But says the group will support primary challengers who oppose taxpayer funding of abortions. Add State Sen. Dan McConchie and Rep. Tom Morrison to the list of legislators who say they’ve told Gov. Rauner he’s finished politically. McConchie said Republican lawmakers tried to convince Rauner to veto the bill. “There is no way that I can in any further election going forward stand with Gov. Rauner after he lied in regards to this. After he told Cardinal (Blase Cupich) one thing and then did something else,” said McConchie. That is not leadership. That is not the courageous leadership that we need to have in our state.” They encouraged the youthful abortion opponents to find candidates who oppose taxpayer funded abortions and to work for them.)

— ACLU DANCES ON THE GRAVE OF HENRY HYDE – THANKS TO REPUBLICAN GOV. RAUNER
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/09/aclu-dances-on-the-grave-of-henry-hyde-thanks-to-republican-gov-rauner.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE:  Despite his campaign rhetoric, Bruce Rauner may go down in history as one of Illinois’ most socially and culturally transformative governors. He’ll certainly be listed among the most effective for the Democrat, progressive left. On Thursday, Rauner signed into law the widely unpopular HB 40, which lifts the ban on taxpayer funding of elective abortions and codifies Illinois as a pro-abortion state regardless of what the U.S. Supreme Court may decide regarding Roe v. Wade. Not surprisingly, the ACLU is ecstatic and hailing Rauner as a hero of their ghoulish, “pro-choice” cause. They’re also dancing on the grave of the late Illinois Congressman Henry Hyde, who, 41 years ago today, passed the Hyde Amendment that banned taxpayer funding of abortion and saved approximately 2 million unborn lives. With the help of Gov. Rauner – who promised voters he had “no social agenda” – the ACLU sees Illinois as a harbinger of future victories across the country. They may be politically and eugenically correct, but they’ll be culturally, ethically, and historically wrong. Thank you Gov. Rauner.)

The segment was about socialism, but because FRC holds traditional family values, I was labeled an LGBT-hater just for being a guest on the show. No LGBT topics even came-up. SPLC’s hate-list exemplifies a bullying tactic employed by the left to silence conservative ideas. Regardless of the issue, support for the conservative point of view results in a litany of hateful labels and reputation-smearing. The goal is to paint any opposition to the far left as morally depraved and, therefore, unworthy of being included in conversation. Dr. Carol Swain, an African-American woman and former Vanderbilt professor, is a perfect case-in-point; she was labeled a white supremacist sympathizer by the SPLC for pointing-out SPLC’s hypocrisy on racial issues. This tactic is more than illogical; it’s dangerous. Reckless and irresponsible hate-labeling not only stifles free speech and expression, it empowers and emboldens vicious groups and individuals to violently attack people. Consider the 2012 Family Research Council shooting, when a man walked into the organization’s office in Washington, D.C., with 100 rounds of ammunition and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches. He planned to kill as many staff members as possible and smear the sandwiches in their faces. He said he chose his target based on SPLC’s Hate Map.)
