— Republican leaders should reform federal agencies rather than gut them. Virtually all federal employees are Democrats. Democrat politicians force them to push the Democrat Party platform, that is, to push dependency on government and charity, LGBTQ, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, diminishment of Second Amendment rights, and Affirmative Action (AA) and DEI, that is, race and gender based preference giving, patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, religious discrimination, and national origin discrimination. About 1/3 of Americans are Republicans and about 1/3 are Democrats. The federal workforce should look like America. I was one of the last Republicans GAO hired. The Democrats who ran GAO in 1980, IRS in 1971, and the Post Office in 1966, hired me because they could not find a Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job. They gambled and lost that I would become a Democrat. In the U.S. Congress, committee membership is determined by a combination of factors, including party affiliation. Federal agencies should be like congressional committees. For example, about 1/3 of their employees at each grade level should be Republicans and about 1/3 should be Democrats. Further, all hiring, retention, and promotion decisions should be based on merit, that is, AA and DEI should be abolished. If that had been the case when I transferred from IRS to GAO when I was 31 in 1980, I might still be a GAO employee. GAO would have promoted me into its Senior Executive Service, currently $195,200/year.  I earned a) job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32. I earned master’s degrees in business in 1976, accounting in 1980, and finance in 1997. I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979 and the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981. I became a licensed CPA in 1981. I became a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, Government Financial Manager in 1994, Financial Services Auditor in 1996, and Forensic Accountant in 1997. But the Democrats who ran GAO wasted all that. They delayed my promotions and never promoted me beyond GS-13. They succeeded in keeping me off audits of IRS for all but 3 years 1986-1988. They always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance. They forced me to retire when I was 49 in 1997. Democrat leaders do not want Republicans to audit IRS. (FROM THE ARTICLE: The Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, has attempted to embed itself in another agency. This time, it’s the Government Accountability Office. The office has refused, but as NPR’s Chris Arnold reports, many experts say, rather than try to elbow its way in the door, DOGE should have been asking GAO for help all along. CHRIS ARNOLD, BYLINE: For months, DOGE has been strong-arming its way into government agencies, gaining access to sensitive data and helping to fire workers. Doing that at the Government Accountability Office, that would be way over the line, says David Walker. He used to run the GAO. DAVID WALKER: The DOGE team needs to read the Constitution again. There are three separate and equal branches of government. ARNOLD: GAO operates under the legislative branch – in other words, Congress – not the White House. WALKER: DOGE has zero authority to review GAO’s operations. ARNOLD: Walker’s been nominated to positions by both Republican and Democratic presidents, and he says GAO and DOGE supposedly have a very similar mission – to root out waste, fraud and abuse, except, he says, that GAO has been doing that for decades, has a staff of several thousand people and it’s really good at it. WALKER: GAO’s like a longstanding professional football team, and DOGE has some very bright people, but it’s more like a much smaller pickup football team from MIT. It’s like intramurals, OK? ARNOLD: Over the past 15 years, GAO says its recommendations have resulted in $725 billion in savings and revenue increases. It just came up with an updated list of proposals. It says that could save another hundred billion or more. Just one example – it’s been studying a space-based laser communication system that the Defense Department’s designing. GAO says it’s found a tweak to the program that could save hundreds of millions of dollars. The White House didn’t respond to NPR’s request for comment but has defended DOGE for finding waste, fraud and abuse. And the current head of the GAO recently said that DOGE lately has been engaging more with GAO about some of its recommendations. Still, David Walker says poor planning and inadequate coordination with Congress have hamstrung DOGE. WALKER: DOGE way overpromised on savings, originally promising 2 trillion. They now claim that they’ve saved about 170 billion. But in reality, I think the real savings is maybe one-tenth to one-fifth of what they claim because only Congress can cut spending. ARNOLD: Walker says, so far, DOGE has mostly been targeting programs that the Trump administration just doesn’t like and indiscriminately firing people. Linda Bilmes is a government efficiency expert at the Harvard Kennedy School. She says that DOGE could have learned a lot from GAO. LINDA BILMES: One of the real tragedies of the whole DOGE effort is that they just ignored this kind of expertise and they didn’t tap into the knowledge base of the people already working in government. ARNOLD: She says the chance to work alongside Elon Musk to help reform government lured in a lot of very talented young people. Some of them were students of hers at Harvard. BILMES: I know firsthand some of the individuals who work for Elon Musk, but they were not leveraged in terms of their own talents. They were put in charge of a website that they had no idea what it was and asked to fire people, and they really were put into positions in which they were entirely unsuited for. ARNOLD: Meanwhile, as far as DOGE trying to embed itself in GAO, there’s another thorny issue there. GAO currently has dozens of investigations underway into whether the Trump administration improperly froze funding that was already allocated by Congress. David Walker again. WALKER: There clearly is a conflict of interest there. DOGE shouldn’t be anywhere close to looking at what GAO’s doing in connection with those activities. (FROM THE ARTICLE: A little-known candidate seeking the Republican nomination for Richard Durbin’s U.S. Senate seat says the GOP needs to adopt a “big tent” mentality that encourages bipartisan cooperation and prioritizes substantive solutions over partisan rhetoric. Pamela “Denise” Long, 52, a longtime contributor to Newsweek and Real Clear Politics, is leveraging her experience as a journalist, political analyst and adjunct professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to carve out a space in the crowded field to replace Durbin. Durbin, 80, a Springfield Democrat, is retiring from Congress after five terms in the Senate and seven in the House. Long says she built her experience by dissecting complex policy issues in a bipartisan manner, particularly those affecting Black voters, immigration, economic mobility and environmental protections. She has challenged both major parties to reconsider their outreach strategies. On her side, she’s ascribing to so-called Big Tent Republicanism, which says that certain conservative positions, such as abortion bans or transgender issues, while important to Republicans, push away moderates and liberals open to cooperation on issues that affect nearly every resident, such as property taxes, gerrymandering and budgeting. Long said she wants her candidacy to reflect a focus on those widespread national issues while offering bipartisan criticism and praise when it is called for. “For me, I champion President Donald Trump when he takes actions that align with the principles of conservatism and constitutionality,” she said. “When he deviates from that, as with (former President Joe) Biden and any other candidate, I call those things out. So, I’m not partisan in that way. My focus is on the best interest of the nation.” Long said one example bringing conservative and liberal issues together is her support for increasing environmental protection in the U.S., but implementing it in issues that bring attention to conservative interests. “Being able to take something like environmental policy and be able to apply it to these modern-day issues like immigration is one method to increase environmental protections without incurring too much animosity from any one side,” Long said. Long said she wants to see more investment in urban infrastructure that has been abandoned, rather than support Trump’s plans to allow development and commercial usage of federally protected lands, including national parks. “One thing which unnerves me is how much of our urban infrastructure has degraded and has just been left rotting in many cities, and I would like to see more development,” said Long. “Development of the dilapidated infrastructure that already exists rather than developing our national parks and green space, I think that could bring more jobs to urban residents.” As a Black woman, Long sees the persistent issues facing African American communities and agrees with the conservative sentiment against handouts or excessive support. But she argues that giving job opportunities, career advancements and a general ability to move out of poverty is a large part of that attitude as well. “I think it is important for Black Americans to hear that our federal government is looking for ways to pull them into the workforce,” said Long. “It’s not handholding as much as it is recruitment and making sure that folks realize that they’re pointing to avenues leading to jobs. We must look at recruitment, retention, development and promotion. At what point do we start thinking about the current and potential future state of our economy and what it’s going to look like? Do we somehow work to offer apprenticeships to students in middle school, shadowing perhaps in high school?” Long says her time as an occupational therapist has shifted her view of prisoners and felons to be viewed as people first, criminals second. She supports the idea of low-level and nonviolent criminals having the ability to either work off their crimes or build themselves up in prison to better support their rehabilitation outside of confinement. While she did clarify violent criminals and felons like murderers and rapists require more nuance based on the case, the goal is to produce a rehabilitated member of society. Helping former convicts get their lives together after their due punishment is the way to do that. “Sequestering a human being from society is a solid punishment by itself; you shouldn’t have to be faced with rape, beatings or dehumanizing treatment,” said Long. “You should be sequestered, rehabilitated, strengthened and developed so that you can be moved forward into society and hit the ground running to be productive. I also think that they should maintain their right to vote. They need to be engaged with the society that they’re going to be coming back into. People who are engaged with society and see a path forward and find a vision for themselves, sometimes for the first time, are less likely to offend.”)
