Two whom Krajewski mentioned are Downers Grove Commissioner David Olsen, who is likely the favorite, and Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully. In an interview Monday with POLITICO Illinois, Durkin, who is a close personal colleague and friend of Sandack, was asked whether he believed the motive was political. “I don’t think it is. I don’t believe that’s the case,” said Durkin. Asked about the possibility of an underlying scandal, he said, “I am not aware of anything else, no.” “I spoke with Rep. Sandack yesterday and he explained to me the decision he made was personal, was family-related. And I will never second-guess anyone’s decision for that reason. I wish him and his family well,” Durkin said. “Ron is not only a trusted colleague but he’s a personal friend. He leaves a void within our caucus but one that we’ll be able to in time fill. His contribution to the state and Republican Party is immeasurable, we wish him well in the next stage of his life.” On Sunday evening, Sandack said in a text that his resignation was effective Monday and that the cybersecurity issues gave him pause over his legislative life: “my family welfare is paramount.” He did not respond when asked whether that meant he feared for his family’s safety. Sandack would not talk by phone. Last week, Sandack, who was prolific on social media, took down his Facebook and Twitter accounts. His official legislative web site is still up. Sandack was the target of robocalls recently that accused him of accosting the chief legal counsel for Democrats on the House floor following a heated vote on the budget. Video at the time showed Sandack touching her arm while asking why voting was closed before a roll call was made. In 2014, Sandack was targeted by conservatives because of his vote in support of a new same-sex marriage law. Already, there’s talk of appointing Sandack’s successor and replacing him on the November ballot. One top candidate widely mentioned is David Olsen, a member of the Downers Grove City Council. Sandack leaves with nearly $130,000 in his campaign account, according to the most recent election filing.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A suburban Republican lawmaker known for throwing plenty of verbal jabs during the 18-month stalemate at the Capitol said Monday that he abruptly resigned because politics is getting “too ugly.” Rep. Ron Sandack, of Downers Grove, said he made his decision to step down from the Illinois House after several fraudulent social media accounts were set up in his name in recent weeks. He also cited recent automated telephone calls accusing him of accosting a Democratic staff member. “I wasn’t looking forward to an ugly general election as it were, this additional stuff added undue pressure,” said Sandack, who was up for re-election this November. “It made my family uneasy and made me re-evaluate my priorities. Politics has gotten too ugly. I don’t need it, and my family doesn’t deserve it.” Sandack would not say if he believed the social media shenanigans was politically motivated, but said he filed a report with the Downers Grove Police Department. Downers Grove police did not immediately say whether they had any police reports involving Sandack, instead suggesting the Chicago Tribune file an open-records request. The Tribune did so, but police have five days to respond. The six-year lawmaker was an outspoken defender of Gov. Bruce Rauner, serving as his House floor leader. Sandack’s desire to debate also bled into his online presence, and he frequently took to Facebook and Twitter to let his viewpoints be known. Last week, Sandack suddenly deleted his Facebook and Twitter accounts. Asked Monday if any compromising information was accessed before he deleted his social media accounts, Sandack said “no.” The former lawmaker said he is looking forward to life as a “private citizen” and will continue his work at a Chicago law firm. Late last month, Sandack appeared in a segment on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” where he said Democrats are to blame for Illinois’ budget impasse. More recently, he’s been the subject of automated attack phone calls accusing him of accosting a Democratic staff member. That stems from a heated debate at the end of the spring session. House Republicans were furious when Democrats quickly adjourned after House Speaker Michael Madigan muscled through a budget bill that ultimately stalled in the Senate. Republicans asked for a double check that required each lawmaker voting for the measure to be verified as in their seat. But that didn’t happen. Incredulous, Sandack went to the front of the chamber to ask Madigan’s chief legal counsel why the verified roll call was never held and touched her on the arm. Democrats later accused Sandack of accosting her, which Sandack denied. “I did not grab her. I did get in her face and talk to her,” Sandack said at the time. Sandack first joined the legislature in 2010, when he was appointed to fill the Senate seat of Dan Cronin, who stepped down to serve as DuPage County Board chairman. He has expressed interest in seeking the 81st House seat in the past and Downers Grove Township and DuPage County GOP leaders say he’s the “front-runner” to fill the remainder of Sandack’s term and likely be listed on the Nov. 8 ballot against Downers Grove Democrat Greg Hose. “Right now it sounds like David Olsen is at the top of everyone’s wish list,” said Bob Grogan, Downers Grove Township Republican Organization chairman. “He’s a well-liked young man.”  Olsen, who works as an ethics and compliance analyst for BP Corp. North America Inc., did not immediately return calls seeking comment. But Republican leaders say he likely will retain his College of DuPage seat but resign from the Downers Grove village council if he’s chosen as Sandack’s successor. “He was looking at this (state) seat in the primary a year ago,” Brian Krajewski, DuPage County Republican chairman, said. The 81st District includes all or parts of Darien, Downers Grove, Lisle, Naperville, Westmont and Woodridge in DuPage and Will counties. “Clearly he’s performed tremendously in his role as commissioner in Downers Grove, was elevated to mayor pro tem and was recently tapped to help clean up the mess at COD,” Krajewski said. Olsen was appointed to the College of DuPage board in February to replace former Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, who resigned in December. His selection — which was supported by Gov. Bruce Rauner — was significant because it broke a 3-3 tie among trustees that plagued the college and stalled business for months following Hamilton’s unexpected departure. COD board Chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi did not immediately return calls seeking comment. Krajewski said Olsen likely will remain on the college panel until the spring election to prevent another stalemate. Olsen already has said he does not intend to seek a full term on the COD board in the spring election. “He helps bring people together,” Krajewski said. “I know his intentions there were never to rerun in April anyway for that position.” Olsen — or whoever is picked to run in Sandack’s place in the Nov. 8 election — will need time to devote to running a campaign, Krajewski and Grogan said. That campaign would pit the chosen candidate against Hose, an attorney and Downers Grove village commissioner who is the Democrat seeking the 81st seat. With his opponent unknown, Hose said he’ll keep his focus on the issues — largely the state’s unpaid bills, economic issues and rising property taxes. “I think that’s the best way to do it. The 25% of Americans who are the most affluent — their annual income range starts at about $102,000 and goes into the millions — spend about $104,000 a year on average from age 50 to 54, their peak consumption years. But by ages 65 to 69, their annual spending falls to about $82,000. Already making do with less, low-income households tend to see a smaller decline in spending after retirement. For the average retiree household, the biggest decline in spending is for insurance and pensions. Spending in this category for the average 65- to 79-year-old retiree household plunges to just 40% of what it was pre-retirement from ages 50 to 64. That category includes contributions to retirement accounts and pensions. The decline makes perfect sense since retirees are far more likely to be taking withdrawals from retirement accounts than stuffing money into them. The only category where spending increases is health care. Spending averages $3,935 a year for pre-retirees. It climbs to 126% of that, $4,959, for 65- to 79-year-old retiree households. The other six categories where average annual spending declines are housing, transportation, food, entertainment, apparel and “other,” which includes spending for things like reading, tobacco, alcoholic beverages, education and personal care.)

Sandack would not talk by phone. SO … why are so many people having trouble believing him? Here’s a few reasons we want to hear more (anything?) from Republican leaders today: 1. Something seems off with the equation. (High-profile statehouse Republican) + (close to most powerful Republicans in state) + (social media accounts hacked into) = immediately resigns? 2. Crickets. The governor, Illinois House Republicans, others in leadership, said a big nada on Sunday at the news of the loss of a top lieutenant. No statements released by leaders. No response from a governor’s spokeswoman when asked for reaction late Sunday. No answer from several Republican party and legislative leaders (with the exception of House Republican forwarding a copy of Sandack’s statement.) That won’t hold today though. 3. Timing. Sandack took down his own social media accounts last week, which prompted all kinds of speculation. He said on Sunday the cyber hacking/harassment started around July 4. He resigned days after taking down his accounts. In the midst of this, Sandack says he experiences a moment of clarity, realizing he doesn’t want to miss any more of his kids’ events. What was missing from the CapFax piece was any description as to what actually happened on these fake accounts. Had they actually posted content pretending to be Sandack? Were they threatening? Embarrassing? The piece said Sandack filed a police report. Beside Sandack, the other person quoted in the CapFax writeup was a recent Rauner appointee, John Bambenek, who talked about how unusual and dangerous it was to have such an open attack against a public official. He also talked about the difficulty of prosecuting computer crimes. The Pew poll found that Clinton held a 56-39% advantage over Donald Trump among Catholic voters. That 17% margin was markedly different from the results of a similar poll in the last presidential race, when then-Senator Barack Obama was virtually even with Mitt Romney among Catholic voters in June 2012. However, Clinton’s margin among Catholic voters was entirely attributable to a huge (77-16%) advantage among Hispanic Catholics. Among white Catholics, Trump had a slight (50-46) edge. Among all voters surveyed, Pew found that Clinton had a 51-42% lead. Trump enjoyed his best results among white Evangelical voters, who gave him a massive 78-17% advantage; Clinton did best with black Protestants, who broke even more dramatically (89-8%) in her favor. I’ve got a problem with that,” Sullivan said. Opponents are also concerned that reducing penalties for marijuana possession sends a message that it isn’t harmful. But about 100 Illinois communities, including Chicago, already give police discretion to issue citations instead of making arrests for having small amounts of the drug. Lawmakers said they want to promote consistency in how minor marijuana offenses are handled. “We have a system where, where you live or what you look like determines whether you get a ticket,” said Democratic Rep. Kelly Cassidy of Chicago, another bill sponsor. The legislation would also require municipalities to purge citation records for possession every six months, unless local governments decide against it. Supporters of the bill argue people shouldn’t be saddled with lifelong criminal records for minor offenses that make it difficult to find employment or housing. When Rauner vetoed last year’s legislation, he said in a letter to lawmakers that the existing penalties for petty marijuana offenses are “too severe” and that “criminal prosecution of cannabis possession is also a drain on public resources.” He wrote that he supports “the fundamental purposes” of the initiative. He said he would sign the proposal if sponsors made changes he wanted. In the bill he vetoed, lawmakers wanted possession of up to 15 grams of marijuana to be a civil offense punishable with a fine between $55 and $125. Rauner wanted he threshold to be lower — 10 grams or less — and the fines higher — between $100 and $200. Rauner recommended the DUI standard for marijuana should be 5 nanograms of THC, marijuana’s intoxicating chemical, in a driver’s blood within two hours of consumption. Lawmakers initially proposed that the standard be 15 nanograms. Currently, any trace of marijuana is enough to be considered impaired, but pot advocates have long criticized zero-tolerance states’ approach because marijuana can stay in a person’s system for several weeks. The bill now on Rauner’s desk has included all of his suggestions.)

Yet Ladd compared watching House Speaker Paul Ryan speak at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland to “the way a young child watches his father march off to prison.” Ladd blamed his departure on party leaders who “have decided on complicity” with Trump. “Our leaders’ compromise preserves their personal capital at our collective cost,” he wrote. “Their refusal to dissent robs all Republicans of moral cover. Mark Kirk is not at the Republican National Convention.  He’s proposing a series of bilingual debates against Democratic Challenger Tammy Duckworth. Kirk tells CBS2 Special Correspondent Jay Levine that aside from a few physical limitations, he’s fully recovered from the stroke which nearly took his life four years ago. The first-term senator still uses a wheelchair most of the time, but mentally, he says he’s fully recovered. He says he could handle debates. “In fact, I have asked Tammy Duckworth to debate me en espanol,” says Kirk, who is up for other debates, and in English. Kirk has said he won’t endorse his party’s controversial presidential nominee, Donald Trump. He says he’ll write in retired Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Colin Powell, and urge others to do the same. “I don’t think Donald Trump would make a good commander-in-chief, he’s too emotional,” Kirk says of Trump. In many ways, and on many issues, Kirk seems closer to Democrats than Republicans. “I am a moderate, pro-choice pro-gay rights guy who wants to spend less and tax less,” Kirk says. He says he also bucks his party where the NRA is concerned. Levine asked Kirk about a series of controversial statements he has made in recent memory. That includes a reference last year to Chicago’s South Side, when he referred to an unmarried colleague as a “bro with no ho.” “When you’re in a race like I’m in, everything is taken the wrong way,” Kirk says. But then he almost immediately let fly another headscratcher about the therapeutic benefits of pinot grigio. He says the wine has helped him talk more clearly. “Suddenly, as the pinot grigio hit the brain stem, my speech abilities came back. And I said to my girlfriend, ‘OK, it’s going to be only pignot grigio.’”  Kirk has waged a long, hard battle to recover from that life-threatening stroke. Now, he’s fighting for his political life, for a U.S. Senate seat Democrats feel may be their best chance to take that chamber from the GOP.)

Schneider said the state GOP organization has more tools to help elect Trump – and other Republican candidates – than political newcomers, who haven’t been involved in the party, can do alone. One way in particular Schneider said the state party can help candidates, is through personal data collection on voters. “We know more about you, I hate to say it, than you think,” Schneider said Thursday morning at the final breakfast meeting of the Illinois Republican delegation. “I mean, we know so much about you because of the data that we’re getting. I can tell you that we get the information from your credit cards and where you buy – what cable TV stations that you watch.” Schneider said all that information helps the Republican Party advertise to swing voters, instead of just the voters who are likely to mark ballots for the GOP regardless of advertisements. He said if Trump supporters want to help their candidate in a bigger way, they should get more involved in the established Republican Party because it already has a way to target specific voters for campaign literature. This comes as earlier in the week, Schneider introduced himself – and the state Republican Party – as the friend – not the enemy – of Trump supporters wary of party leaders who oppose Trump for president. “You all need the Illinois Republican Party,” Schneider said to the political newcomers who make up a lot of the Illinois Republican delegation at national convention. “We need you and you need us. And it’s time for such “government transit” to get its hands off of the U.S. Highway Trust Fund, the GOP says. Under current law, proceeds from the federal 18.4 cents a gallon tax on gasoline are split between roads and transit, with the latter usually getting about a fifth of the total. The fund has come perilously close to running short in recent years, in part because people are driving less but the per-gallon tax has remained frozen for many years. Faced with that, GOP House lawmakers a few years ago moved to switch the entire amount to roads, something that would have forced transit to battle it out for every other demand for federal general funds. That got squelched when a handful of GOP congressmen from urban areas, including Chicago, revolted.
