http://www.chicagobusiness.com/realestate/20170228/CRED0701/170229891
(FROM THE ARTICLE: ON ENDANGERED BUILDINGS WATCHLIST  Constructed in 1897, the red brick mansion on the site is now attached to a chapel and the dormitory, both of which were built by the nuns’ order after they took ownership of the property in 1946. The mansion was one of 12 built by original members of Chicago Golf, the Wheaton club that in 1894 built what is now the oldest 18-hole golf course in North America. Illinois Steel president Jay C. Morse built the house for his daughter, Carolyn Morse Ely, and her husband, Arthur Ely, at about the time their marriage was breaking up. It was one of several mansions architect Jarvis Hunt designed for Chicago Golf members. Hunt also designed the course’s clubhouse, which faces the old Ely house across about a half-mile of lawn. Jarvis Hunt’s other buildings included one at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Jackson Park, and railroad stations in several cities. For Kansas City, Hunt designed the 900-room Union Station. Wheaton has no landmarks ordinances that prevent demolition of the convent’s building, said Michael Dzugan, the city manager. “The developer at this point is not interested in restoring the historic structure,” Dzugan said, “so that’s where we’re at with it.” A few weeks ago, Pulte announced it would give the building to anyone wiling to move it, “but nobody has spoken up, as far as I know,” Dzugan said. Wheaton resident Jean Follett said the lack of ordinances protecting the house is “an excuse. People in Wheaton have known the building was threatened since 2009, and have been saying they want it preserved” she said. In 2009, Landmarks Illinois, the historic-buildings advocacy group, included the historical Chicago Golf houses, including the convent, on its Watch List of endangered buildings. “The city could have done something about it any time since 2009,” said Follett, a former Landmarks Illinois board member. Landmarks has sent two letters in recent months to Wheaton officials, urging the city to require Pulte to reuse the mansion. It could house several condos, a park district recreation center, or both, both Follett and the Casas said.)

http://altondailynews.com/news/details.cfm?clientid=17&id=237882#.WLV7GxHxZZI
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Not every high school graduate will go to a four-year university, many won’t go to community college.  Governor Bruce Rauner told the State Board of Education last week that Illinois’ schools need to do more to get those students ready to work. “Technical classes and apprenticeships should be a core part of what we do in our school system,” Rauner said. DAILY CALLER
— Trump Pushes For Massive Budget, Staff Cuts At EPA – MICHAEL BASTASCH  (DIERSEN: I worked for GAO 1980-1997. During that time, and especially after 1988, Republican politicians pushed for and got massive budget and staff cuts at GAO.  Because I was virtually the only non-veteran White male Republican in GAO’s Chicago office, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in GAO’s Chicago office took their anger against Republican politicians like Newt Gingrich out on me.  Prior to 1988, they forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980, they kept me off audits of IRS 1980-1985, and they did not promote me beyond GS-13. After 1988, they kept me off audits of IRS, they did not promote be beyond GS-13, they always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, and they forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old.)

CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN NEWS
— ROGUE ADMINISTRATIVE STATE NEEDS TO GO ONCE AND FOR ALL – Kent Kellar  (DIERSEN: What about stopping patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation for complaining about the aforesaid? GAO hired me in 1980 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job.  IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.  The Post Office hired me in 1966 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.)
http://conservativerepublicannews.com/2017/02/27/rogue-administrative-state-needs-to-go-once-and-for-all/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Part of the problem is former President Barack Obama changed civil service rules to make it easier to hire federal employees. Trump has solved that by initiating his hiring freeze. But federal rules also make it extremely difficult to fire civil servants. It is a process that can take up to two years, even when there is cause. That said, problem employees who, say, don’t show up for work should be dealt with through this process immediately. But to do more requires Congress to step in, which can assist this process three-fold: 1) By incentivizing early retirement via the appropriations process with limited-time-only buy-outs; 2) cutting the personnel budgets of non-defense civilian departments and agencies, reducing the enacted full-time equivalent number for each department, agency and office by 10 to 20 percent in the workforce on a last-one-in, first-one-out basis; and 3) defunding existing preferences under federal rules being given to those laid off being later rehired on a first-in-line basis. That would eliminate politicized Obama administration holdovers, and prevent them from being rehired should it become necessary to fill in some gaps. Other ideas include eliminating automatic dues deduction for federal employees unions and getting rid of any full-time official time union personnel.)

http://www.federaltimes.com/articles/former-border-patrol-heads-question-rush-to-accelerate-hiring
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A shared concern among those interviewed was that a rapid hiring initiative could pose logistical issues and result in a compromised vetting stage. “When you speed up the process and don’t take the requisite time, you pay a price later in things like corruption,” said Gil Kerlikowske, CBP head for three years under President Barack Obama. During the post-9/11 manpower push, which doubled CBP border patrol agents from 10,000 to 20,000 by 2008, internal corruption cases increased to the point the Anti-Border Corruption Act of 2010 was passed, making polygraph testing mandatory for all border patrol agents. In addition, current applicants undergo a cognitive exam, fingerprinting, financial disclosure, fitness tests, medical examinations and background checks.)

They hint/imply/argue/shout that we could do that only a) because I avoided the draft, b) because we gave up trying to have children, we did not adopt, and we did not become foster parents, c) because the federal government grossly overpaid me, d) because my Civil Service Retirement System pension is too generous, and e) because my federal health, dental, and vision insurance subsidy (currently $17,288) is too generous.  Last year, our out-of-pocket medical expenses were $21,433.)

— Disappearing company towns search for identity – AP
http://myjournalcourier.com/news/106230/disappearing-company-towns-search-for-identity
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis planned to open this year’s State of the City speech by thanking Caterpillar Inc. for its longtime commitment to the central Illinois town, declaring “We wouldn’t be Peoria without Caterpillar.”  It’s been that way for decades in Peoria and in other company towns across the United States. A major employer provided generations of locals with jobs and gave the cities a central identity, while executives helped keep cultural institutions, Rotary clubs and higher-end housing markets healthy. Now many of those midsize communities are looking for a new identity as more companies trade their longtime hometowns for major cities with easier access to global markets and to the lifestyle talented young workers want, with public transit, nightlife and trendy restaurants. Caterpillar’s recent decision to move 300 top headquarters jobs to the Chicago area made Peoria the latest city with a vacuum to fill. In 2014, Decatur lost Archer Daniels Midland’s headquarters to Chicago after 40 years in the town. ConAgra Foods moved 1,000 jobs last year from Omaha to Chicago.)

— Did the 2011 White House correspondents’ dinner spur Trump to run for president? – Amy B Wang  (DIERSEN: Democrats are disciples of Saul Alinsky.  Alinsky’s fifth rule encourages the use of ridicule.  I should write a book about those in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who use ridicule.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/politics/ct-white-house-correspondents-dinner-trump-20170226-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If several media and political pundits are to be believed, President Donald Trump sits in the White House today as the result of several hours one warm April evening nearly six years ago: the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. That year, at the invitation of none other than The Washington Post, Trump — then best known for “Celebrity Apprentice” – attended the event, an annual gathering of journalists that typically has been headlined by the sitting president. Or, as The Post’s Roxanne Roberts once described it, a dinner “devolved from a little-known media evening into a black-tie mash-up of the Super Bowl, the Oscars and Davos, Washington-style.” Trump was no ordinary celebrity guest in 2011, however. In addition to being a reality TV fixture, he was one of the most vocal opponents of President Barack Obama, leading the “birther” movement that had demanded Obama release his birth certificate. Trump had also been hinting, not for the first time, that he might launch his own bid for the presidency. All of those things coalesced to make Trump the target of a large swath of jokes at the 2011 correspondents’ dinner. First came Obama, who roasted Trump for a full five minutes that evening, seeming to delight in directing zingers at the man who had questioned whether he was a legitimate president. (Unbeknown to the world then, the president was also, at the same time, authorizing the raid that would kill Osama bin Laden.) “No one is happier, no one is prouder to put this birth certificate matter to rest than the Donald,” Obama said. “That’s because he can finally get back to focusing on the issues that matter, like: Did we fake the moon landing? What really happened in Roswell? And where are Biggie and Tupac?” Obama also joked about Trump’s experience to lead the nation. “All kidding aside, obviously, we all know about your credentials and breadth of experience,” he said. “For example, no, seriously, just recently in an episode of ‘Celebrity Apprentice,’ at the steakhouse, the men’s cooking team did not impress the judges from Omaha Steaks. And there was a lot of blame to go around, but you, Mr. Trump, recognized that the real problem was a lack of leadership and so, ultimately, you didn’t blame Little John or Meatloaf — you fired Gary Busey. And these are the kinds of decisions that would keep me up at night. Well-handled, sir. Well-handled.” But it was comedian Seth Meyers, the host of that year’s dinner, who really laid into Trump. For several minutes, Meyers lobbed one joke after another at Trump’s expense, even wedging in a prescient imitation of Trump hosting a White House news conference: “Gary Busey said recently that Donald Trump would make an excellent president. Of course, he said the same thing about an old, rusty birdcage he found.” “Donald Trump has been saying that he will run for president as a Republican – which is surprising, since I just assumed that he was running as a joke.” “Donald Trump owns the Miss USA pageant, which is great for Republicans because it will streamline their search for a vice president.” Video from the dinner would later show Trump seemingly frozen in the audience, lips pursed, staring straight ahead with his face set into something between a squint and a hard scowl, as Meyers continued. Several publications have since seized upon the 2011 dinner as the moment in which Trump’s political ambitions crystallized. “That evening of public abasement, rather than sending Mr. Trump away, accelerated his ferocious efforts to gain stature within the political world,” the New York Times wrote last March. “And it captured the degree to which Mr. Trump’s campaign is driven by a deep yearning sometimes obscured by his bluster and bragging: a desire to be taken seriously.”)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— More taxes? Really? – PAUL FICHTNER, Member, DuPage County Board
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170224/ISSUE07/170229911
(FROM THE LETTER: I read with interest a recent opinion piece (“Here’s a way to stop Illinois’ shame spiral,” Feb. 15) by Michael Belsky that calls for a “tax revision commission.” I suspect his main goal is to call for a tax on services when he says, “Today only 17 percent comes from the sale of goods and 71 percent is derived from services. The service economy is benefiting from the state and not sharing in the cost. This is wrong.” In 1965, there was no state income tax. Today it is 3.75 percent, soon to go higher. Sales taxes that were 4 percent in 1965 are now over 10 percent in Chicago. These large increases in taxation rates over the years have made up for any “lack of service tax revenue” and were probably designed with the fact that services are not taxed. Last year, 37,508 people moved out of Illinois, and companies have made decisions not to locate here. Residents are leaving because of high tax rates that have also caused businesses to not move or expand. An additional service tax will hurt the very service industry that he shows is such an important part of our economy. It is very disappointing to hear the drumbeat of more revenue as the “only way” to recover from bad fiscal management. The crisis I see is the lack of urgency in addressing ideas to reduce expenses, smart consolidation of governments and exploring privatization of some government functions. Pushing aside my 10.75 percent sales-taxed breakfast in Chicago this fine morning, I call for the creation of an Expense/Efficiency Revision Commission, on par with any Tax Revision Commission.)

http://www.sj-r.com/news/20170225/sanctuary-issue-draws-dueling-demonstrations-to-capitol
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A pending bill in the Illinois House that would create sanctuary zones for undocumented immigrants drew demonstrators from both sides of the issue to downtown Springfield Saturday. Rosanna Pulido of Springfield, founder of The Illinois Minuteman Project, organized a noon rally at the Abraham Lincoln statue at Second Street and Capitol Avenue. The rally was in opposition to HB 426, which would allow schools, medical treatment and health care facilities and places of worship deny access to state and local law enforcement officers who are enforcing immigration laws, unless the officers have a court-issued warrant. “It’s absolutely ridiculous,” Pulido said. “I think the biggest question we have for Governor Rauner and any legislator who would want to pass this bill is: Does making it easier for illegal aliens to stay in Illinois improve the lives of Illinois residents?” About five minutes into Pulido’s rally, which drew about 50 people, a group of about 30 people marched down Capitol Avenue chanting “No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here.” The counter-protestors set up shop on the northeast corner of Second and Capitol near the Martin Luther King Jr. statue. The counter-protest was organized by the same people who did the Nov. 19 Springfield Stands United rally, and other local groups, said Valerie Liesenfelt of Springfield. The Springfield Stands United rally started out as a demonstration against then-President-Elect Donald Trump, but morphed into an anti-hate rally. Speaking Saturday, Liesenfelt said they don’t want to see children ripped away from their parents. “We aren’t going to tolerate people who want to close our borders from people who are trying to just seek a better life. That’s what America was founded on,” Liesenfelt said. Hot-button issue  The bill that got the two groups out in the 33-degree weather was introduced by state Rep. Emanuel Chris Welch, D-Hillside. His district includes west suburban Cook County. Welch wasn’t at the rallies but spoke about the legislation during a Friday telephone interview. “I think this is an important piece of legislation that sends a signal to the rest of the state and the rest of the country that Illinois is a safe place to live and we are a welcoming state,” Welch said. Welch said HB 426 is not a sanctuary city bill but was specifically written to create safe spaces. Those places are state-funded schools, nursing homes, health clinics, hospitals and churches. “People shouldn’t live in fear of deportation,” he said. “They should be able to go to school and receive an education without feeling like federal law enforcement officials are going to bust in and raid their classroom. They shouldn’t fear going to the hospital. That’s a place of treatment and recovery.” Welch said that after the November presidential election he got calls from school officials who said they had a lot of scared children in their classrooms. “The day after the election, teaching and learning did not go on in school,” Welch said. “Teachers spent the entire day counseling very distraught children who were crying and worried about being deported themselves and worried about whether or not they would go home and their parents wouldn’t be there.” State Rep. Allen Skillicorn, R-East Dundee, was at Pulido’s rally, which was billed as an “Illinois America First Rally.” His district is also in the Chicago area, and includes the communities of Crystal Lake and Elgin. Skillicorn has proposed a bill, HB 2942, to counter Welch’s. He disagreed with the assertion that children need to be protected from immigration officials while in school. “I haven’t heard of any children or school children having a risk of being deported or seized by (federal agents),” Skillicorn said. “People who are criminals or felons who don’t have legal status, those are the people committing the DUIs, who are committing the crimes. Those are the people we should really worry about.” Fiscal concerns A synopsis of HB 426 posted on the Illinois General Assembly’s website includes a fiscal note that the estimated cost of the bill is $5 million. Welch said the estimate is a one-time cost, and he believes the number is inflated. Skillicorn is opposed to spending state money on HB 426 and added he’s concerned about the potential loss of federal funds if state and local law enforcement do not cooperate with federal authorities. “Realistically, Illinois is broke,” Skillicorn said. “We need to save money everywhere we can. The idea of spending millions, if not billions of our federal matching dollars, is just something we can’t afford right now.” Pulido shares his concerns about the state’s fiscal condition. “We’re broke. We have the disabled not getting funds, we have schools getting their funding cut, seniors getting their funding cut, and now we’re going to talk about $5 million to help the illegal aliens to stay in Illinois. No,” Pulido said. The people in favor of sanctuary for undocumented immigrants chanted throughout Pulido’s rally. At one point, they chanted, “No ban, no wall, sanctuary for all.” Several of the people on Pulido’s side of the street, the ones opposed to sanctuary, waved American flags and occasionally chanted “USA, USA, USA.” Some of their signs said, “Illegals welcome is fake news” and “No sanctuary. Help our vets.” The two sides stayed on their respective sides of the street. There were no physical altercations between the two groups. Pulido’s rally wrapped up after about an hour, which is how long she expected the event to last. “I knew they would be here,” Pulido said of the counter-rally. “That’s fine. That’s what freedom is all about.”)

February 23 Evening Edition

U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT
— Illinois Attorney General Convenes Summit on Trump Orders  Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has convened legal and civil rights organizations in the wake of what she calls “troubling” executive orders issued by President Donald Trump. – AP  (DIERSEN: What do Trump, Pence, Bost, Davis, Hultgren, Kinzinger, LaHood, Roskam, Shimkus, Rauner, Sanguinetti, Radogno, Durkin, Schneider, DeMonte, and Porter have to say about this?)
https://www.usnews.com/news/illinois/articles/2017-02-23/illinois-attorney-general-convenes-summit-on-trump-orders
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Groups attending Thursday’s summit include Arab American Family Services, the Chicago Urban League and Lambda Legal. Group leaders say they fear escalating hate crimes. Madigan says orders dealing with immigration threaten America’s “history of inclusion and diversity.” She says that includes a temporary ban on travel from seven predominantly-Muslim countries. The four-term Democrat supported lawsuits against the ban. The ban was blocked in court, but Trump says he’s revising it. On Thursday, Madigan condemned the Trump administration’s rollback of public school bathroom requirements for transgender students. Madigan says she backs a proposal that will strengthen Illinois’ hate crime laws.)

WHITE HOUSE
— President Trump Speaks at CPAC
https://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2017/02/23/president-trump-speaks-cpac
(FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT: President Donald J. Trump will speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Friday, February 24. The President will address the annual meeting of the conservative movement at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Maryland, at 10:00 AM. CPAC is a gathering of conservative activists from all across the country who meet to learn from each other, receive training in activism and campaign management, and hear from prominent conservative leaders. The conference began in 1974, when then-Governor Ronald Reagan described his vision of America as a “city upon a hill” for the first time. To date, three Presidents have addressed CPAC. President Trump will be the fourth. President Trump has addressed CPAC several times in the past, speaking to the gathering in 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015. Heading into the conference, President Trump has already achieved many important accomplishments in his first month in office. Whether it is jumpstarting job creation, restoring public safety, slashing harmful regulations, or keeping his promise to defend the Constitution, conservatives have much to be excited about heading into Friday’s message from the President. In addition to the President, Vice President Mike Pence will speak at the conference tonight, February 23, at 7:30 PM. Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and Chief Strategist Steve Bannon spoke to the conference this afternoon.)

http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/channel-7s-mark-giangreco-suspended-for-anti-trump-voter-tweet/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: WLS-Channel 7 sports anchor Mark Giangreco has been suspended without pay for a tweet calling President Donald Trump a “cartoon lunatic” elected by “a country of simpletons,” according to an online report. The TV station handed Giangreco a “multi-week suspension” without pay, according to media blogger Robert Feder. “Mark Giangreco’s Twitter comments are not in line with ABC 7 Chicago’s non-partisan editorial standards. We’ve reviewed the matter and are taking the appropriate action,” the station told Feder in written statement. Giangreco appeared on the station’s 5 p.m. newscast on Thursday, after word of his suspension was reported. The sportscaster drew his bosses’ ire when he responded to a tweet from a Toronto Star sports columnist who wrote “Donald Trump: a hateful ignorant corrupt simpleton supported by 87% of Republicans.” Giangreco countered with a tweet since deleted: “So obvious, so disturbing. America exposed as a country full of simpletons who allowed this cartoon lunatic to be ‘elected.’” Giangreco is ABC 7’s “Chicago sports director and primary sports anchor/reporter for the Number One rated 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts,” according to a biography on the station’s web site. “Giangreco has earned a reputation for being a sports anchor that even non-sports fans enjoy watching, delivering sports with humor, wit and an interesting spin on the day’s sports news,” according to the bio. ” He joined the station in 1994 after a stint at WMAQ-TV. Giangreco is the brother of Pete Giangreco a leading Chicago-based Democratic political consultant whose clients have included Barack Obama, Rahm Emanuel and Tammy Duckworth.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Why did changing demographics not lead to electoral destiny for Democrats? Our report out this month provides several answers, starting with the fact that demographic change isn’t evenly dispersed. In our system of place-based government, unless millennials move to the rural South or the growing Latino population settles in equal measure across the Rust Belt, demography will take a long time. Take the U.S. House. Going into the 2016 cycle, the 159 House districts deemed safely Democratic by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report are already majority-minority. (The average is 45 percent white.) The 90 swing districts are 70 percent white — much closer to the breakdown in safe Republican districts, which number 186 and are 75 percent white on average.)

— After refusing to watch LGBT diversity video, Social Security judge sues to avoid being fired – Derek Hawkins
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/02/21/after-refusing-to-watch-lgbt-diversity-video-social-security-judge-sues-to-avoid-being-fired/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Citing his First Amendment rights and religious protections under the Civil Rights Act, a Social Security Administration judge in Texas who refused to watch an LGBT diversity training video is suing his superiors to avoid being fired, saying he was subject to a “religiously hostile work environment.”  Judge Gary Suttles said in a complaint filed Thursday in federal court in Texas that the Social Security Administration, or SSA, should be barred from taking any disciplinary action against him at least until his religious discrimination claims are heard by a federal employment panel. “The agency has wholly failed to work in good faith to reasonably accommodate Judge Suttles’ sincerely held religious belief against watching” the video, the complaint says. The agency violated his rights, the complaint says, “by discriminating against him on the basis of his religion, creating a religiously hostile work environment,” and by “retaliating against him for his protected activity of seeking a religious accommodation.” A representative from the SSA was not immediately available for comment on Tuesday. Suttles’s case comes amid a sweeping expansion of LGBT rights, during which courts have ruled against bakers, florists and others who say anti-discrimination measures clash with their religious liberties. Social conservatives and some Christians argue that the government should not be able to force them to offer their services to same-sex couples, and they have sought religious freedom exemptions as recourse. Some of the most high-profile cases have played out in the business world, including a lawsuit against a Christian baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. But government officials have drawn attention for their defiance, too, among them Kim Davis, the county clerk in Kentucky who refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses in violation of a Supreme Court ruling. Suttles was hired as an administrative law judge in the Houston District office of the SSA in 2005. In the time since, he has never received a reprimand or warning, his complaint says. In May, one of the office’s directors sent an email ordering employees to watch a video called “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Community.” The 17-minute video included a message from the agency commissioner and “a brief session on tips for increasing cultural awareness in a diverse and inclusive environment,” according to the complaint. The email said the SSA was responding to a 2011 executive order from President Obama that instructed federal agencies to develop new workplace diversity and inclusion plans. Suttles wasted no time telling the office director he would not watch the video. “I am already fully aware to treat all persons with respect and dignity and have done so my entire life,” he said in an email the next day, according to the complaint. “Furthermore, this type of government indoctrination training does not comport with my religious views and I object on that basis as well. Monica Anderson, the hearing office’s chief administrative law judge, responded with a sharply-worded message giving Suttles a “direct order” to watch the training video. “Failure to follow this directive may lead to disciplinary action,” the chief judge said, according to the complaint. Anderson also denied Suttles’s request for a religious accommodation, saying the agency needed to ensure “all employees know about and comply with this.” The back and forth carried on for a few months. Suttles suggested that the agency give him a pass by allowing him to take a professional ethics course or “alternative diversity” course that “did not deal with such a specific community of people.” Anderson declined, proposing instead that Suttles read a transcript of the video. Suttles again refused. “Judge Suttles continued to refuse to watch the mandatory,” the complaint says, “because it is the substantive content of which, not the medium by which the content was delivered that violates his faith.” By the fall, Suttles’s case had made its way to the regional chief administrative law judge, who issued an official reprimand and warned Suttles that “future acts of misconduct” could result in more serious punishment, including removal from the job. (Administrative law judges, unlike federal court judges under Article III of the Constitution do not have life tenure.) The reprimand barred Suttles from working from home or requesting a job transfer for one year, according to the complaint. Suttles claims the action was retaliatory. He reported the episode to an Equal Employment Opportunity counselor, alleging the agency violated his First Amendment right to free exercise of religion, as well as his rights under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on several factors, including religion. According to the complaint, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission will not finish its initial review of his case until mid-March. In the meantime, the deadline for Suttles to watch the video has lapsed. The judge said the agency “has made it quite evident that it does not intend to wait” to discipline him. Suttles says he will suffer “irreparable harm” unless the court prevents the agency from disciplining him or forcing him to watch the video. Though his complaint describes a “sterling work record,” Suttles was criticized and investigated by the SSA in 2015 after he scoffed at a Gulf War veteran’s post-traumatic stress disorder during a disability benefits hearing. Suttles questioned whether the veteran, a 44-year-old who served as a fueler on an aircraft carrier, had experienced true trauma during the war. “I mean, hey, you were in the Navy. You weren’t even fighting on the ground,” Suttles told him, according to the Austin American-Statesman. “To me it would have been exciting. What do you mean stressful?” The remarks were condemned by veterans groups at the time. The SSA ultimately rejected calls to temporarily remove Suttles from his job.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Following a recent string of overdoses that have occurred in Connecticut sober houses, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) joined U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), and Marco Rubio (R-Fl.) have called on the U.S. Government Accountability Office to investigate federal and state oversight of sober living homes, and determine whether additional oversight is necessary. In a letter to Comptroller General of the United States Gene Dodaro, Murphy outlined the gravity of the opioid epidemic in Connecticut and emphasized that a GAO review of sober homes would be helpful in understanding the role they play in helping Americans recover from substance use disorders. “Connecticut is in the midst of an opioid epidemic. The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner projected that almost 900 residents in my state would die from an overdose in 2016. This is more than double what it was just four years ago,” wrote Murphy. “Unfortunately, there have been several recent overdoses that have occurred in Connecticut sober houses. These deaths have raised questions about these facilities and the GAO review will be helpful in determining whether state and federal policymakers should consider additional oversight.” Most recently, a Ridgefield man and Danbury woman died within a span of two weeks from drug overdoses at a sober house in Torrington.)

— Surviving Trump: Ex-Blagojevich aide’s tips for White House staff  (DIERSEN: Have you been fired from a paid job, and if so, why?  Constructively, my Democrat GAO superiors fired me in 1997 when I was 49 years old by forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” because since 1988, I had been an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged GAO with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation and because I had complained about political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, and retaliation before then. My Chicago Heights Firestone Store Manager fired me in 1971 immediately after I told him that I had accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile.  Constructively, my Democrat Park Forest Post Office superiors fired me in 1969 because I could only commit to be available to work Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, and all days that NIU was not in session.)
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/a-former-blagojevich-aides-survival-guide-for-trump-staffers/amp/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Absorb the “boss’ anger and craziness.” Focus on doing your job well, and ignore the “circus in the West Wing.” And don’t be afraid to tell the president “no” — if it means stopping “stupid things from happening.”  That’s Bradley Tusk’s advice for newly appointed members of the Trump Administration. “If you’re not willing to fight — and to be fired for it — don’t take the job,” Tusk writes in an article published on inc.com. Tusk figures he knows what he’s talking about. At 29, he was named Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s deputy governor, a position for which he says he was “totally unqualified.”)

Representing a portion of Will County, Bonds was recently appointed to the position by Illinois Republican Chairman Tim Schneider. The committee is formulated to work in tandem with the House Republican Organization, Senate Republican Organization, the State Republican Central Committee and the Illinois Congressional Committee by synchronizing campaign strategies and resources. Additionally, the Illinois GOP recently organized an endeavor to take a survey of statewide Republican leaders, precinct committeemen and conservative grassroots leaders. Questions centered on how the Republican Party can make improvements in the way it facilitates the GOP’s mission throughout Illinois, and the answers have been collated into a PowerPoint presentation accessible online. Constituents can view the survey results online. Will County also recently announced that its election department has an extended need for Republican election judges in the townships of Custer, Wesley, Reed, Florence and Wilmington. North Cook News reviewed district check registers from Jan. 2011 to Jun. 2016. The Pacific Educational Group (PEG) received taxpayer dollars as part of District 203’s “professional development” budget, conducting “diversity training” and holding “seminars” and “summits” with dozens of New Trier’s teachers. One of them, New Trier teacher Pat Savage-Williams, a lead organizer of the school’s mandatory White Guilt” Day, scheduled for Feb. 28, presented at a recent event in Austin, Texas. Including reimbursed travel expenses, attendance at these events has cost New Trier taxpayers many tens of thousands of dollars more. Savage-Williams is president of the Evanston Township High School Board and has actively promoted PEG in that district as well. PEG specializes in “white privilege” training for public school teachers and administrators. Its founder, Glenn Singleton, preaches that white teachers stop black and Hispanic students from achieving because they fail to understand their cultures.)

— How Public Employee Pensions Make Income Inequality Worse – Marc Joffe  (DIERSEN: What would your superiors say that they did to fight income inequality?  My Democrat GAO superiors would stress that they forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.  My Democrat IRS superiors would stress that they did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims.  My Democrat Post Office superiors would stress that they forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests.  My aforesaid Democrat superiors would stress that the aforesaid adverse actions that they took against me directly benefited their employees who were poor, and especially their poor employees who were Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran.)

FEDERAL NEWS RADIO
— Civil service reform starts with performance – Jeff Neal  (DIERSEN: Measuring performance is extremely subjective. Starting in 1989, to punish me for becoming in 1988 an active member of a class action lawsuit that charged GAO with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation, my Democrat GAO superiors used the subjectivity in their pay-for-performance (PFP) system to always rank me in the lower half of my coworkers for PFP purposes.  They were furious that I earned job-related professional certifications in 1990, 1994, 1996, and 1997 and that I earned a job-related master’s degree in 1997.  During that time, my Democrat coworkers focused on helping my GAO superiors get rid of their employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)

SEATTLE TIMES
— To federal-government workers: Persist!  My message to my former colleagues in the federal government is: Don’t go. Instead, speak truth to power. You are needed now more than ever. – Frederick J. Kaplan  (DIERSEN: I stayed and persisted against political affiliation discrimination, against reverse discrimination, against age discrimination, and against retaliation for almost 30 years.  For doing that, I paid the following price:  My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.  My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, they disallowed my education deductions, and they disallowed my partial day per diem claims.  My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests.)
http://www.seattletimes.com/opinion/to-federal-government-workers-persist/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: These are the worst of times for federal-government employees. Several of the political appointees in the Trump administration are hostile to the missions of the departments and agencies they now lead. On top of that, the president’s hiring freeze will create imbalances in the federal workforce, requiring current employees to fill in random gaps. Many civil servants will simply quit in disgust. I hope they don’t. When Ronald Reagan became president in 1981, I was an attorney in the Seattle office of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. In his first year in office, President Ronald Reagan proceeded to remake our small agency, bringing in new leadership that openly disdained the civil-rights community and its agenda. Some of us joked bitterly that we were becoming the U.S. Commission against Civil Rights. Funding for the commission was drastically reduced. Discouraged, much of the staff, myself included, found employment elsewhere. Abandoning ship in such circumstances is understandable, but in retrospect I think a mistake. When those civil servants with the strongest commitment to their agency’s mission leave, who remains? Answer: Those less committed and less likely to confront their political masters. Sure, the most earnest among those who quit the government will carry on their cause from the outside. But ultimately civil rights, environmental protection, enforcement of labor standards cannot be fully realized without governmental action, that is the action of dedicated and experienced civil servants.)
