The company announced Wednesday that it will provide $100 a month for up to 36 months to full-time sales associates and “high potential” and “top performing” employees who are paying off student loans or in the process of earning a degree. With unemployment low, many companies are struggling to pull in and retain dedicated young workers with good skills, and increasingly they are eyeing help with student loans as a means to stand out as an employer, said Gary Kushner, president of Kushner & Co. a Michigan-based benefits consulting firm. While large companies such as Fidelity Investments and PriceWaterhouseCoopers have received national attention for providing the new benefit, small and medium-size companies are especially interested in it as a retention tool, he said. “If you are fortunate enough to get skills and the right cultural fit, you want to hold onto the person as long as you can,” said Kushner. He noted that retailers especially face a struggle. About 4 percent of employers have been offering student loan repayment help this year, according to a Society for Human Resource Management survey of employers. Americans have about $1.2 trillion in student loan debt and about half of those with loans have monthly payments that are excessive based on their incomes, according to a study by the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Academic research has shown the pressure of college loans is causing some millennials to delay marriage, children and home purchases. . .The company also is offering a tuition reimbursement program for some employees who pursue education while working and gives 30 college scholarships of $3,000 each to children of employees. Helping employees pursue education while on the job is not a new benefit. In contrast to the new perk aimed at new workers with student loans, the old programs were designed to increase skills of existing employees. According to the Society for Human Resource Management, tuition reimbursement programs for employees who go to undergraduate or master’s programs have been cut back in recent years. In 2012, 58 percent of employers were offering the benefit to employees going to graduate school. In 2016, that had dropped to 52 percent. For undergraduate tuition, 61 percent were giving benefits in 2012, but that had dropped to 55 percent in 2016. Tanya Mulvey, researcher for the human resources group, said that employers have been looking for ways to cut some benefit costs to make up for the extra cost of health insurance. The average tuition reimbursement per employee per year was $4,442 in 2016, she said. Companies offering tuition reiumbursements can receive a tax deduction.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Instead of having to plow through 1,500 words to ascertain this columnist’s Nov. 8 predictions, here is the list, in the first paragraph: Hillary Clinton, Tammy Duckworth, Susana Mendoza, Brad Schneider, a Democratic U.S. Senate majority, a narrow Republican U.S. House majority, Mike Madigan and a 68-50 House majority, Laura Murphy, a Cook County Democratic tsunami, and, in an oddity, Republican state Representative Mike McAuliffe. Should not the Obama-Clinton Administration be held accountable? It’s not. It’s all just sound and fury. Up until the 1990s the country was divided between the haves and the have nots. Now it’s schismed between (1) the won’t haves, essentially the Millennial generation, which has maximum debt and minimal job opportunities and which views income redistribution as the solution; (2) the entitlement class, which includes retirees and all those who receive some income from some government source; (3) the keep what I haves, primarily the working class, struggling to pay their bills and affected the most by crime, property taxes and neighborhood change; (4) the haves, those families earning more than $100,000, spending more than they make, worth maybe $1 million, and worried about the future; and (5) the wealthy, the infamous top 1 percent, whose net worth is $10 million and up. Of those demographic sectors, only two in 2016 sought to upset the status quo, the Millennials, who embraced Bernie Sanders’ socialism, and the working class, who embraced Donald Trump’s anti-elitist populism. Each was sending the message no more Clintonism, Obamaism, Bushism, elitism, insiderism and favoritism. Yet, on Nov. 8, all of those “isms” will triumph.)

Maura Possley, a spokeswoman for the attorney general’s office, said people were confused because the group’s vote-by-mail solicitation didn’t say who it was coming from. “Because the Illinois Opportunity Project’s mailings do not identify that organization and, instead, are sent from ‘[Name of County] County Vote By Mail Center’, they have led to voter confusion regarding whether they are official documents from the counties,” Possley said in an email. The Illinois Opportunity Project has ties to Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner, a Republican. One of the group’s co-founders, the conservative radio host Dan Proft, also heads up a big-spending political action committee that is funded partly by Rauner. The governor is looking to chip away at Democrats’ supermajority in the state legislature. Madigan’s father, state Rep. Michael Madigan (D), has been speaker of the Illinois House for decades. The Illinois kerfuffle is one of several voting controversies, some more serious than others, unfolding in various states as Election Day nears.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The federal-private sector pay gap remains essentially unchanged from a year ago at 34.07 percent, the Federal Salary Council has reported. While that represents the official word, based on BLS data, it likely will have little to no impact on the prospects for the January 2017 federal employee raise, which will be 1.6 percent unless political leaders take up the raise issue. They have shown no sign of interest in doing so this year, similar to the pattern of the prior three years when the council also reported a pay gap in the 34-35 percent range but raises only in the 1-2 percent range were paid—also in each case by default when no figure was enacted. The 1.6 percent raise is to be paid as 1 percentage point across the board and the 0.6 percent divided as locality pay. The largest gaps, and thus the largest locality pay portions to be paid, were found to be in the San Francisco, Washington-Baltimore, New York, Los Angeles and Sacramento areas. However, even in those areas, the raise likely will be only in about the 1.8 percent range. The lowest-paid locality, meanwhile, is the catchall rest of U.S., which covers areas in the contiguous states outside one of the 44 city areas (Alaska and Hawaii are separate localities in their entirety) as well as U.S. territories and possessions. The raise in those areas likely will be around 1.4 percent; exact figures are to be set by a late-year executive order formalizing the raise. Locality rates are paid according to where employees work, not where they live, and reflect comparisons of labor market conditions, not cost of living.)

This is a position of great importance given the mismanagement and financial state we are in. The comptroller is in essence the state’s head accountant, and neither of the major parties candidates running have any accounting experience. In fact, the state of Illinois has never had an accountant elected to this office. This year, that could change. The most qualified candidate is Libertarian Claire Ball. She has real world experience with both a bachelors and masters degree in accounting, and has received her CPA. Several Student Government (SG) representatives filed a resolution against Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) that also called for the administration to punish and even expel students who commit “future incidents of bias.” Without referring to the resolution, YCT sent a legal threat letter to UT President Gregory Fenves. It said the group would sue UT if it took “punitive action” against YCT for its speech, citing a federal law that allows lawsuits against public officials for retaliating against or chilling protected speech. A university spokesman told The College Fix in an email Tuesday night that won’t happen, because UT “does not and will not take action against an organization for protected speech.” ‘More of a movement’ than actual legislation  At an SG assembly meeting Tuesday night, shortly after the university said it wouldn’t punish YCT, representatives nonetheless voted to “fast track” the resolution, known as AR-15, The Daily Texan reported. Debate was extended at the unusually lengthy meeting, according to the Daily. President Kevin Helgren said YCT’s bake sale was “hate-filled” but emphasized that the university could choose to ignore an approved resolution. Co-author and co-sponsor Priya Suri said the resolution was “more of a movement and a statement that we stand in solidarity with people of color and people who were emotionally affected” by the bake sale. The outcry against YCT’s bake sale started with a student petition that alleged the cheeky demonstration against racial preferences – which was partly led by a black student – was a “hate crime.” It had 860 signatures as of Tuesday night. The new petition was followed by the SG resolution, which has seven sponsors and 12 authors. Two authors work in the Multicultural Engagement Center, though neither is listed as full-time staff – Cameron Maxwell, director of external relations for African American Affairs, and Alejandrina Guzman, director of Latino Leadership Summit for Latino Community Affairs. It’s not the first petition to try to kill YCT at UT for a political demonstration – three years ago, more than 5,000 people signed a similar petition. The resolution is dripping with contempt for what it characterizes as UT’s hands-off approach to offensive campus speech. It cites the bake sale; a Feb. 20 incident where white UT students allegedly threw bottles and yelled a racial slur at a black student; Phi Gamma Delta’s 2015 “border patrol” party, which was investigated by the dean of students; and the cause of the prior petition, YCT’s planned “Catch an Illegal Immigrant” game (canceled due to “safety concerns“), among other incidents. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Despite not hosting a presidential candidate since 1992, Wheaton College has a rich history of hosting, producing and gaining support from prominent political leaders since its foundation by Jonathan Blanchard — who once ran for president himself — in 1860. Of all of Wheaton’s renowned visitors, perhaps the most impressive are the nine presidential candidates who visited Wheaton’s campus between 1960 and 1992. The first was Richard M. Nixon, the Vice President and 1960 Republican presidential candidate at the time. Nixon appeared at a rally on McCully field and, according to the Wheaton College Archives, encouraged the crowd to “strengthen the faith of America” and “see that young people grow up with faith in God.” Nixon later won the presidency. President Jimmy Carter was the last president to visit Wheaton. He delivered the February 1992 LeRoy H. Pfund Lecture. Other visitors with presidential aspirations included Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress, 1964 Republican candidate Barry Goldwater, 1972 Democratic candidate George McGovern, President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush and the Reverend Jesse Jackson. Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan, a populist Democrat who ran for president in 1896, 1900 and 1908, was also a guest of Wheaton. Most recently, 2012 Republican Vice Presidential and current Speaker of the House Paul Ryan gave a speech at a Wheaton breakfast in spring of 2015. Many alumni have also gone on to become recognized public figures. Disgraced ex-Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert was a 1964 graduate. At one point, Hastert served in Congress alongside three other Wheaton graduates: Republican Indiana Senator Dan Coats ’65, Republican Michigan Representative Paul B. Henry ’63 and Democratic Washington Representative Jim McDermott ’58. Other alumni in politics include Michael Gerson ’86, chief speechwriter for President George W. Bush who helped write Bush’s memorable post-9/11 speeches. More infamously, David R. Young Jr. ’59 was a special assistant at the National Security Council in the Nixon Administration. Young co-founded the White House Special Investigations Unit — known as “The Plumbers” — known for breaking into a psychiatry office and later attempting to break into the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate complex, instigating the Watergate scandal. Additionally, several public figures have supported Wheaton financially in the past as Trustees. Owen Lovejoy was a founding Trustee of Wheaton College, U.S. Congressman and friend of Abraham Lincoln. A scholarship was later presented in his name. Another trustee, Salmon P. Chase, was a Senator, governor of Ohio, Secretary of the Treasury and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Chase was the great-great uncle of Wheaton’s sixth president and the great-great-great uncle of Ken Chase, current chair of the Communication department at Wheaton. He is also the face of the $10,000 bill. David Iglesias, current director of the Wheaton Center for Faith, Politics and Economics and professor of politics and law, graduated from Wheaton in 1980. In 2001, Iglesias was appointed the U.S. State Attorney for the District of New Mexico under the Bush administration. He also served in the U.S. Navy in 2008 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom as a terrorism and war crimes prosecutor and has held various other national and state positions. Iglesias said Wheaton helped prepare him for public service in three ways: “It gave me the confidence to speak in public; it gave me the Biblical basis for getting involved in the political process; it helped me organize my thoughts and ensure I was focusing on facts, not arguments.” Politics and international relations department chair and associate professor of politics Bryan McGraw said Wheaton tries to “prepare all of our students to exercise leadership in whatever field they choose to go into.” Specifically, Wheaton equips aspiring political leaders to use the gifts given to them to effect justice worldwide, according to McGraw. “We would hope that Wheaton graduates — and Christians more broadly — would be more likely to grasp that call clearly and have the freedom and courage to put it into effect.”)

It’s cycle after cycle of bad candidates in bad races and bad political leadership and being junior partners to the Democrats and some people think DuPage should be run like a mini Cook County. Think about this: In 1998, George Ryan got 72 percent of the vote in DuPage County. And in 2010, Bill Brady got 52 percent. For the second most populous county, most Republican county, that is an unbelievable amount of attrition in a relatively short period of time. (FROM THE ARTICLE: “Build the wall” has become a rallying cry for millions of conservative Americans who feel left behind by an increasingly diverse America. And “build the wall” is exactly what a group of Loyola students did, but for a very different reason than some conservatives might. “It isn’t about some wall hundreds of miles away,” said junior Addison Mauck, who organized the Mock Border Wall project that was displayed on Loyola’s West Quad from Oct. 18–20. “The purpose of this project is to humanize the topic of immigration and combat the negative rhetoric of the current political season.” The words, “No human being is illegal” and “We are a nation of immigrants,” were displayed on hand-painted banners that hung from the wall’s steel fencing. Despite the project’s supportive message, it garnered harsh criticism from undocumented students who felt they weren’t given a voice in the installation. About 20 signs that read, “Majority of undocumented students were not consulted for this,” were posted on the wall in protest. “We had a student [in] our organization who represented the community of undocumented students because we do not want to force anyone to speak about something that can be very personal and private,” Mauck said in response to the criticism. That student to whom Mauck referred, who wished to remain anonymous because of the sensitive nature of her immigration status, said her role in the project was not very significant. “It raises the question of why more students weren’t reached out to by anyone other than me, because I was not an organizer of the project,” she said. “Our community, both undocumented and immigrant, does have a voice on campus, and other people should not be speaking for us.” Loyola has taken steps to support that community of undocumented students. In 2001, Loyola became involved in the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, which provides a pathway to citizenship for children of undocumented parents. Since 2012, about 150 students and faculty have completed “Share the DREAM,” which is training to become an ally for undocumented students, offered by Loyola’s Department of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (SDMA), said SDMA director Joe Saucedo. The training is a three-hour long session that covers DREAM Act legislation, the barriers undocumented students face and the personal stories that those students bring with them, according to Joe Saucedo. “It’s important to know that these students’ status of being undocumented is one aspect of who they are, but it’s not all of who they are,” Saucedo said. “[The training] indicates to someone who may carry those identities that this is a safe space and there are people who get them and understand.”  In order to make it easier for undocumented students to attend Loyola, students voted in 2015 to include a $2.50 fee to each student’s tuition, creating the Magis Scholarship Fund, which provides free tuition and housing to five undocumented students every year. One recipient of the scholarship, sophomore Vince Garcia, said he appreciated Loyola’s support of undocumented students but revealed that he hasn’t received any communication or resources from the university since receiving the scholarship. He said his academic advisor hasn’t completed the DREAM ally training. “I’d say they should communicate better, because I always have questions about health insurance, for example, and I feel like I don’t have anyone to talk to,” said Garcia, a social work major who wants to help undocumented students like himself get a head start. “I think we’re getting better at this. Part of our job is taking stock of the barriers that students face, and we try to bring in the students themselves and ask them how they feel,” said Saucedo. “The most important thing we can do, as people with citizenship privilege who can vote, is to continue to elect politicians who will support these programs and keep the interests of undocumented students in mind.”)

That’s one politically quirky result of a poll taken by Swapalease last month, which linked respondent’s political preferences to car choices. About 2,500 people participated in the unscientific, opt-in survey. When asked what kind of car best suited their personalities, Democrats were most likely to choose the Tesla, while Republicans saw themselves as ‘Vette-like. The Tesla/Corvette dichotomy also split down gender lines, as many men wanted Corvettes (no shock there) and women preferred Teslas. Other cars that registered on the “personality” list were big sellers such as the Honda Accord and Ford F-150 as well as the Hummer and the Chevrolet Volt. Granted, the results of the poll were tilted a bit, as the respondents were two-thirds male, while Republicans outnumbered Democrats by a 3-to-2 margin. When guessing which cars the presidential candidates would prefer to drive, the respondents said Republican candidate Donald Trump would drive a Cadillac Escalade, while Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton would choose a Mercedes-Benz GL Class. With the survey pool leaning Republican, 39 percent of those polled said they would vote for Trump, 36 percent would choose Clinton, and the rest would choose the always-elusive “Someone Else.” On that note, when given various choices to describe the “personality of this year’s election,” a third of those polled said “a driverless car.” As for how long the respondents said they’d keep their cars, most ranged from 21 to 36 months. Which is quite a bit shorter than a presidential term. Even with the unscientific methods at use here, we can perhaps learn a little something, since the connection between electric cars and Democrats has been seen before. But, naturally, we know that Republicans can like Tesla, too. Some of them even buy five of them. They just might be outliers.)

Of the roughly $2 million that federal workers from 14 agencies spent on presidential politics by the end of September, about $1.9 million, or 95 percent, went to the Democratic nominee’s campaign, according to an analysis by The Hill. Employees at all the agencies analyzed, without exception, are sending their campaign contributions overwhelmingly to Clinton over her Republican counterpart. Several agencies, such as the State Department, which Clinton once led, saw more than 99 percent of contributions going to Clinton. Employees of the Department of Justice, which investigated Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of State, gave Clinton 97 percent of their donations. But David Schultz, a Hamline University Professor of Political Science, said government employees have historically favored Democratic candidates over Republicans both in their voting habits and political contributions made in their personal time. Under the Hatch Act, federal government employees are banned from engaging in political activities, including making campaign contributions, during work hours. “Government employees are, on balance, more moderate or more liberal as opposed to the general population,” Schultz said. “Not across the board, but in general.” Government employees are “more likely to believe in government as opposed to, let’s say, a privatization program,” he added, “programs that we would view as hostile to government.” Republicans typically campaign on promises to slash government payrolls, which helps explain why recent GOP presidential candidates have received the smaller share of donations from government workers. Yet while Republicans usually do worse than Democrats, Trump appears to be doing especially poorly in fundraising from government employees. The 2012 GOP presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, received 14 percent of donations from the same group of agencies surveyed for Trump. Trump received just 5 percent. Comparisons to previous presidential candidates are of limited value, since they took public funding for their general election campaigns. Trump might have had a chance to do better than Romney. He discarded much of Republican orthodoxy during his primary campaign, which could have led some federal employees to believe that he’d be more amenable to big government. He vowed, for example, to leave massive social welfare programs virtually untouched. But Trump also constantly attacked federal institutions. During his primary campaign, he described the federal government as a corrupt, bloated body run by “very, very, stupid people.” Trump vowed “tremendous cutting” of the government in an interview with The Wall Street Journal in January and singled out the Department of Education and the Environmental Protection Agency as agencies he’d slash dramatically if not outright eliminate. Agency employees have likely taken note of Trump’s hostile rhetoric. In the Department of Education’s case, that included Trump’s pledges to hand over control to the states and to fight tooth and nail against Common Core standards. From Department of Education employees this cycle, Trump received three donations totaling $220. Clinton received 724 donations for more than $74,000. In all, she received 99.7 percent of donations from employees of the department. Donations from the State Department, which Clinton ran from 2009 to 2013, were even more slanted in her favor. State Department employees gave Trump 39 donations, for $4,652. Over the same time period, they gave their former boss 2,518 donations, for $425,525. Throughout his campaign, Trump has portrayed himself as a strongman who would toughen up America’s defenses — both militarily and at the border — and who would take care of veterans. It’s probably no coincidence, therefore, that Trump performed best in donations among employees of three agencies: Defense, Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs. But even employees of these more Trump-friendly agencies have overwhelmingly contributed to Clinton’s campaign. From Defense employees, Trump received 341 donations for $43,575. Clinton got 2,392 donations for $225,560, giving her 84 percent of the money. From Homeland Security employees, Clinton got 90 percent of the donations, and from Veterans Affairs she took 88 percent. Romney performed significantly better than Trump with employees at all three agencies, receiving, for example, $98,153 from Defense employees, which amounted 21 percent of donations. During the Republican primaries, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said, “Let’s create a little bit of a recession in Washington, D.C., so that we can have economic prosperity outside of Washington.” Fear of such plans might be the truest explanation of these uniformly lopsided donations. Schultz, the Hamline professor, said “self-preservation”— particularly for workers engaged in public sector unions — probably motivates their political giving. “This means support for their jobs,” he said. “Clinton, for the most part, is going to be probably a continuation of more or less what Obama is.” Federal government employees, he said, are likely “more willing to give to somebody who would be more predictable in terms of supporting their livelihood, their jobs, as opposed to somebody who might be less predictable.”)
