(FROM THE ARTICLE: 1. Eliminate electronic distractions Distractions can increase your workload and stress levels. The constant ding of e-mail and text notifications and Internet temptations can easily disrupt your focus and concentration. According to a study by the University of California, Irvine, it can take up to 23 minutes before you’re able to refocus on the work you were doing before you were interrupted. To start, set up temporary barriers to help keep you focused. Some web tools that can help are Freedom, a website blocker for your computer and phone, and Inbox Pause, which stops new e-mails from coming into your inbox for a time. While the prospect of quieting electronic noise like this may seem daunting at first, it can help maximize your work day and minimize the amount of overtime needed.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Conservative mega-donor Richard Uihlein and Gov. Bruce Rauner parted ways bitterly after Rauner signed the HB40 abortion legislation supported by pro-choice advocates. Uihlein went on to bankroll Republican state Rep. Jeanne Ives’ primary campaign to the tune of $2.5 million. When she lost, Uihlein seemed to step back from political races. He gave only $1.5 million to various candidates across the state during Q2. That changed in Q3. He ramped up his support, giving $3.5 million to Dan Proft’s conservative Liberty Principles PAC, which is backing numerous GOP candidates in statehouse races. Uihlein also gave $150,000 to Bill Brady’s state Senate campaign in the 44th District (he’s running unopposed); and $300,000 to Barrett Davie, who’s running against Dem incumbent Julie Morrison for the 29th state Senate District seat. – Shia Kapos

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s not easy to voice my opinion about Harvard’s admissions policies on campus. For all the talk about “diversity,” many fellow students won’t tolerate my views. I often get comments such as, “How can you be against affirmative action? That’s racist,” and “You should be grateful to Harvard. Why are you critical of them?” . . . On campus, I’m often labeled as ignorant and bigoted for opposing affirmative action. I’m one of the few students who openly criticize Harvard. Even among friends and fellow Asian-American students, this is a polarizing issue that has fallen on partisan lines. Yet real alternatives to race-based affirmative action exist. Race-blind admissions processes that prioritize socioeconomic status, taking into account how applicants have dealt with life’s challenges, would do a far better job of creating genuine diversity. Asian-Americans know they are being unfairly discriminated against under a defense of diversity. Let’s hope the courts recognize it too.)

The ministries generally won’t pay for services that don’t align with those principles, such as abortion and substance abuse treatment, and they often limit coverage of pre-existing conditions and prescriptions.)

— DIERSEN HEADLINE: An anti-Trump says “Survival rests on SHUNNING TRUMP.” Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, and RINOs have always advised Republicans to shun conservatives. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Vice President Mike Pence arrives in southern Illinois today to campaign for Rep. Rodney Davis, the incumbent Republican from the central Illinois to Metro East areas where President Trump still has some clout. GOP Congressman Peter Roskam is listed as one of the honorary co-hosts of today’s luncheon fundraiser, along with Congressmen Mike Bost, Randy Hultgren, Adam Kinzinger, Darin LaHood and John Shimkus. But don’t expect Roskam to get too cozy with the White House in the run-up to Election Day — Trump remains unpopular in Roskam’s suburban Chicago-based district. In fact, the president is a big reason Roskam’s seat is suddenly one of the most endangered GOP seats in the nation. How endangered? Enough that party strategists are suggesting he might be abandoned as a lost cause if his campaign doesn’t “recover quickly.” For now though, the NRCC is out with a new attack ad aimed at his opponent, Democrat Sean Casten. And Roskam’s camp says the NRCC is pouring $1.5 million into its race. The veteran congressman will need it. Casten has $4.6 million reserved for ads. And a poll commissioned by Casten two weeks ago showed him ahead 49 percent to Roskam’s 44 percent.)

(FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT: The Illinois CPA Society is seeking minority college students who are sophomores, juniors, or seniors interested in accounting to apply for the Mary T. Washington Wylie Internship Preparation Program. This highly competitive and all-expenses paid program will be held January 3-5, 2019. This program prepares up to 25 racially/ethnically diverse students for entry-level positions with access to practical training, resources, and potential future employers. Highlights from the agenda include resume advice and interview coaching from recruiters and volunteer experts. Additionally, all participants receive a $500 scholarship, business cards, a professional headshot, and a LinkedIn profile. At the end of the program, participating employers conduct onsite interviews with the students for a variety of opportunities, including Abbott Laboratories, Crowe LLP, Deloitte LLP, Ernst & Young LLP, Grant Thornton LLP, KPMG LLP, PwC LLP, and Sikich LLP. “When our scholars end up receiving internships and even full-time job offers, it’s highly rewarding to know that we’ve helped brighten their futures,” said Kari Natale, Director, CPA Endowment Fund of Illinois. “Not only do students leave motivated to succeed, but we see them become more confident and better prepared than they ever imagined.” This program is funded by donations to the CPA Endowment Fund of Illinois’ Mary T. Washington Wylie Opportunity Fund, which honors Mrs. Washington Wylie’s legacy by offering opportunities that promote diversity and strengthen the accounting profession.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/daily-southtown/opinion/ct-sta-slowik-highest-paid-superintendent-st-1011-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A system that rewards public servants with excessive compensation should rile south suburban homeowners struggling to pay high property taxes and other bills. Paraday’s base salary this year is $309,306, but that’s only part of the story. The cost of health insurance, an annuity, pension contributions, a car allowance and other expenses drove Paraday’s total compensation for the year to $407,145 — making him the highest-paid superintendent in Illinois. Paraday oversees 1,130 students in three schools, which were delayed from opening in August due to mold in the junior high. Yet, Paraday makes more than the CEO of Chicago Public Schools, who oversees 371,382 students in 644 schools. Open the Books, a Burr Ridge-based watchdog group, discovered that on top of his other compensation, Paraday is set to receive a “golden handshake” of $762,615 for unused paid days off. “Unused, earned sick leave, unused vacation days and unused personal business days shall be allowed to (accumulate), without limit,” Paraday’s contract states. “The superintendent, at his discretion, may submit for payment, at the current per diem, any unused sick, personal or vacation day(s).” Paraday, 56, who has been superintendent since 2005, accumulated 567 days at a rate of $1,345 per day, Open the Books said, based on information it obtained from the district through the Freedom of Information Act. “The bloated Illinois education bureaucracy rewards those who know how to play the pay-and-pension lottery,” Adam Andrzejewski, Open the Books founder and CEO said in a statement. “It’s time the dollars start following the children rather than the bureaucracy.”)

— Rauner “totally” agrees that citizens “are being skipped over” for illegal immigrants (DIERSEN: It is far easier for employers to exploit citizens of foreign countries, and especially citizens of foreign countries who are in America illegally. From what I see, far too many employers in America prefer hiring citizens of foreign countries FOR THEIR BAD JOBS, and especially citizens of foreign countries who are in American illegally, over citizens of America. What BAD JOBS did you have? According to my critics/opponents, their operatives, all the jobs that I had were BAD JOBS. I did yard work and delivered newspapers 1962-1964; washed dishes 1964-1966; cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966; delivered mail 1966-1969; worked on an automobile assembly line and as a security guard in 1970; sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances 1970-1971; pumped gasoline 1971-1972; collected delinquent taxes 1971-1980; and audited federal agencies 1980-1997.)
https://capitolfax.com/2018/10/11/rauner-totally-agrees-that-citizens-are-being-skipped-over-for-illegal-immigrants/
— Rauner campaign: “Pritzker paying back the money he conned out of Illinois taxpayers is nothing less than an admission of guilt that he committed fraud” (DIERSEN: Money Magazine and my Democrat IRS and GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates hinted that my education deductions were fraudulent. They hinted/implied/argued/shouted that the graduate business and accounting courses that I took a) were not job-related, b) did not help me carry out my job duties, c) qualified me for a “new trade or business,” d) were taken by me to get a job in the private sector, and e) were a distraction.)

— New Pritzker ad features son of deceased Quincy veterans’ home resident (DIERSEN: Just kidding, but if I sought a government office or a political office, my critics/opponents would run ads featuring people who would say how great TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, Milton Township Republican Central Committee, Illinois Center Right Coalition, American Association of Political Consultants, Association of Government Accountants, and other organizations were BEFORE I JOINED THEM and THAT I BROUGHT THOSE ORGANIZATIONS DOWN.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: 1. Illinois (Republican-held. Previous ranking 2): Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) is the most vulnerable governor this cycle. Despite having endless millions to spend on his race, he was always going to have a tough path to reelection in a Democratic state. It was the entrance of a third-party conservative candidate that appeared to seal his fate by making Rauner a governor without a natural constituency. Democrat J.B. Pritzker, another billionaire, looks like he’ll cruise to victory.)

While I worked for GAO 1980-1997, the last 11 years of which at GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $96,403-$125,325, I increasingly worked as a referencer, that is, as a fact checker. That work required assuring the accuracy and support for each and every word, number, table, graph, chart, conclusion, opinion, and recommendation in GAO reports. I worked for IRS 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880. — How does a Bay Area Republican survive? Act like a Democrat – Holly Honderich (DIERSEN: Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. https://www.sfchronicle.com/politics/article/How-does-a-Bay-Area-Republican-survive-Act-like-13293456.php
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Catharine Baker calls herself pro-choice, pro-environment and pro-gun control. As the only Republican to hold partisan office in the decidedly liberal Bay Area, it may be the only way she can hang on. Since she was first elected in 2014, the East Bay assemblywoman has split with the GOP on issues that define it nationally and has sought to distance herself from the man who now controls the Republican Party, President Trump. Her tenure in Sacramento has been marked by frequent excursions across the aisle to work with Democrats. “That’s one of the strongest signatures of my record: independence from parties and interest groups,” Baker said. “I feel I’m one of the most effective members of the Legislature that way.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Illinois Republican Party, which has been heavily subsidized by Gov. Rauner, has gotten a cash infusion of more than $850,000 from a variety of sources. The House Republican Organization, the campaign funding arm of House GOP lawmakers and candidates, gave the state GOP $500,000. The HRO has also received significant funding from Rauner. In addition, the Republican State Senate Campaign Committee gave the party $200,000, while Rauner’s hand-picked state Republican chairman, Cook County Commissioner Tim Schneider, added another $80,000. Barrett Davie, a Republican state Senate candidate from Lake Forest who is challenging Democratic state Sen. Julie Morrison of Deerfield, also gave the state GOP $70,000. Davie also has been the beneficiary of more than $300,000 from conservative Republican mega-donor Richard Uihlein of Lake Forest.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Democrat’s poll shows Casten ahead of Roskam by 5 points – Tina Sfondeles
https://chicago.suntimes.com/?post_type=cst_article&p=1411456
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Among women voters polled, Casten is up 15 points — 54 percent to 39 percent. For men voters polled, Roskam is up by 7 points — 50 percent to 43 percent, according to the poll. Casten is also performing better with voters age 18 to 39 — polling 58 percent to Roskam’s 25 percent. The race between Roskam, who has held the seat since 2007, and Casten, a political newcomer and a former energy company executive, is under a microscope nationally as Democrats try to regain control of the chamber. Roskam’s campaign said they’re aware the race is close but expressed optimism in the incumbent’s chances. The campaign on Sunday also sought to link Casten to Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan, echoing TV ads which say “both would make us pay a lot more” in taxes. “We are confident voters will stick with Peter Roskam, who has been an effective leader for Illinois and is rated as one of the most bipartisan members of Congress,” spokeswoman Veronica Vera said.)

— WHY YOU NEED NEW CONSERVATIVE SOCIAL MEDIA & SEARCH Stop being censored by Facebook, Google and Twitter
https://www.wnd.com/2018/10/why-you-need-new-conservative-social-media-search/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Have you been a victim of censorship? If you are a conservative, it is almost certain Facebook, Google, Twitter or another high tech company put some type of restriction on the information you need. Your posts may be blocked or shadowbanned. Perhaps, important news is hidden from you. It is a matter of freedom or tyranny. Many people are asking, what is the solution? USA.Life social network and 1776Free.com search engine are the answer to Facebook, Google and Twitter censoring Christians, conservatives and liberty. These new sites are being built by Steven Andrew, a Silicon Valley technology and Christian leader. He set up a crowdfunding page to launch the sites and people are chipping in to save our freedoms. Already, they have exceeded $200,000. When Andrew saw Facebook block tens of millions of his posts from followers, he decided to use his Internet business and leadership skills to make these pro-America alternatives. How can these new sites save the Internet for you and your loved ones? Here are three important reasons why you need USA.Life and 1776Free.com. 1. Freely Share Life, Liberty and Happiness Andrew found big tech blocks pro-American values. Your God-given rights are being restricted. Important things like God, family values, securing the borders for your safety, gun rights, life, the Constitution and traditional marriage are being attacked by these big tech companies. A report found Google gave 96% liberal news against President Trump. This affects elections. USA.Life and 1776Free.com use a Pro-America Algorithm (TM), so you can always share and find life, liberty and happiness. You can freely talk about American values, without being restricted. This makes you and your loved ones safe, strong and blessed. 2. Privacy News reports reveal Facebook, Google and others track almost all private details of your life. This spying is unAmerican. However, USA.Life and 1776Free.com give you privacy. Only a minimal amount of information is used. If you delete something, it is deleted. There is no selling of your personal data to third parties. 3. Real News Liberal big tech companies updated their algorithms, so conservatives get less traffic, according to reports. They promote fake news outlets, which is a danger to national security. USA.Life and 1776Free.com are different. They give you real news, so you know the truth about what is going on. You and your family gain real knowledge. Learn More Without USA.Life and 1776Free.com, your freedom and privacy could be lost forever. However, the Internet can be saved if 58,000 people give $10, or if 5,800 supporters give $100. New members are joining every day by signing up for a free account. Joining now gives users access to preferred usernames and project updates. Don’t be trapped with anti-American Facebook, Google and Twitter, sign up today. With these new sites, you help save the USA.)

— Think Again If You Plan To Work Longer – Teresa Ghilarducci (DIERSEN: How long do you plan to work? I planned to work at least until I would be eligible for regular retirement when I was 55 in 2003. But my Democrat superiors in the federal government succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement offer when I was 49 in 1997. Consequently, my pension is only $51,864, or only 41% of what my $125,325 salary was in today’s dollars.)
https://www.forbes.com/sites/teresaghilarducci/2018/10/08/think-again-if-you-plan-to-work-past-65/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When 52% of older workers are pushed out of their jobs, working longer is not their choice. The stark truth is that a significant share of older workers — age 55-64 — are not anywhere near being on track to afford retirement. The median retirement account balance for older workers is only $15,000. Even the highest income workers — those earning over $200,000 per year who are in the top ten percent of the income distribution — do not have enough money to retire and maintain their standard of living. Their median account balance is under a year’s salary at $200,000 and 15% of the highest earners have no retirement plan except Social Security. For nearly 20 years, the advice to older people is to make to make up for inadequate retirement wealth by working longer. Yet, from 2008 to 2014, at least 52% of retirees over 55 left their last job involuntarily as a result of direct job loss (they were laid off or their business closed or changed ownership); they felt they were pushed out so they quit; or their health deteriorated; or they had to leave work to take care of a sick family member.)

In the article, Money Magazine hinted/implied/argued/shouted that the graduate business and accounting courses I deducted were not job-related, did not help me carry out my job duties, were taken by me to get a job in the private sector, and were a distraction. My Democrat IRS superiors were more than happy to use Money Magazine’s article to disallow my education deductions and to end my IRS career. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Partisans on both sides of the issue have made much of the hearings. Those for Kavanaugh’s nomination believe he was railroaded by the left and therefore is entitled to defend himself, even losing his temper. Those against Kavanaugh position him as an arrogant and entitled person of privilege who shows himself without the temperament to be a justice. Anyone wrongly accused has a right to defend himself – loudly and vociferously. But when that person periodically loses his cool and resorts to partisan conspiracy theories, then people become suspicious. In fact, more than 2400 law professors signed a letter attesting to Kavanaugh’s intemperance and unsuitability for the high court. Comportment is essential to leadership. Until recently, our society has always valued politicians who kept their cool, in fact, those who did not were often voted from office, or mocked.)

https://www.theintelligencer.com/news/article/German-heritage-deep-in-Illinois-Ja-13283656.php

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Saturday is German-American Day, which is observed every Oct. 6. In Illinois, there is plenty of reason to celebrate. German ancestry remains prevalent in Illinois, as it has for a century and a half. The strength of German-Americans helped shape Illinois history through a Civil War — and two world wars against the old country. Of Illinois’ nearly 1.8 million residents in 1860, nearly 325,000 were of foreign birth. Germans were the largest ethnic group with 130,000, nearly 8 percent of the state’s total population. In Chicago, 20 percent of the population was German. Many had arrived following the failed German revolution of 1848. A heavy concentration of Germans also was found in St. Clair County, near Belleville. Others settled in cities such as Quincy, Alton, Peoria, Springfield and Galena. In the northern Illinois community of Peru, Germans made up 1,000 of the total population of 3,500 in 1854. The names of a number of communities across the state honor German heritage, including New Baden, New Minden, Germantown, Darmstadt and Meppen. Many Germans were farmers, while others were laborers, merchants and skilled tradesmen. Some followed the popular crafts of their homeland and worked as butchers, bakers, shoemakers, furniture and wagon builders, and cigar makers. Architecture of traditionally German-American buildings, often in brick, remains visible across the state. German-language newspapers were found across the state, even in the smaller cities. In 1859, future presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln bought the press and type to establish a German-language Republican paper. In Peoria, future Illinois Secretary of State Edward Rummel, a native of Baden, Germany, ran a German paper and print shop that produced materials in both German and English. John Wood, who founded the city of Quincy and served as Illinois governor for 10 months in 1860 and 1861, was born to a German mother. In 1892, Prussia native John Altgeld, best known for his pardon of three of the accused in the infamous Haymarket Riot, won election for one term as Illinois governor. Politically, Germans’ support was crucial for a candidate, and their power was felt in 1856 during the first Illinois Republican state convention. The German influence also was a key factor in the 1860 presidential race and, at the Republican National Convention in Chicago, German resolutions were even incorporated into the national platform. Germans were perceived to be staunch abolitionists, though some scholars dispute that claim. Nearly 6,000 Illinois Germans enlisted during the first six months of the Civil War, comprising almost three entire regiments. One top German commander was Friedrich Hecker, a renowned 1848 revolutionary who was a gentleman farmer near Belleville, in the heart of heavily German settlements. Another German regimental commander from St. Clair County was Gustave Koerner, who served as lieutenant governor of Illinois from 1852 to 1856 and was a pallbearer at Lincoln’s Springfield funeral. By 1910, more than 319,000 German immigrants were in Illinois, and more than 1 million people of German descent — a 10th of the national total — called the state home. With nearly 400,000 first- and second-generation German immigrants, Chicago was the sixth-largest German city on the globe in 1914. The high concentration of Germans caused some protest at the outbreak of World War I, as many of German descent decried their adopted country’s stance against their homeland. Music by German composers such as Mozart and Beethoven was banned in some public places, and some German-Americans were under surveillance by state and federal officials. Other German-Americans were forced to recite loyalty oaths in public spectacles. Within a few years, use of the once-prominent German language faded from schools and churches. As a result, many Germans in Illinois distanced themselves from their heritage. From 1914 to 1920, the number of Illinois residents who identified themselves as German on the Census dropped more than 41 percent, to 112,000. But many Germans remained loyal to the American cause and took active roles in the war effort, both at home and abroad. A quarter-century later, dislike of German residents was a minor issue in World War II, as many chose to focus their disgust on Adolph Hitler, rather than their German neighbors. Today, German heritage in Illinois is celebrated in festivals and carnivals statewide, while some communities in Chicagoland — as well as Moline, Peoria, Gibson City, Mascoutah, Waterloo and Millstadt — feature popular German restaurants. Museums and research centers on German-American history and heritage are found in several large metro areas, including Chicago, and the Quad Cities.)

WEALTHY RETIREMENT
— Age Discrimination Is Alive and Well – Steve McDonald (DIERSEN: How old are you? I am 70. All my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always promoted age discrimination a) to get rid of those who are older than they are and/or b) to curry favor with those who promote age discrimination.)
https://wealthyretirement.com/slap-in-the-face/equal-employment-opportunity-commission-age-discrimination/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Here’s one for all of us who have been forced out of a job or were forced into early retirement because of our ages. In 1974, my uncle Stephen was forced to retire at the age of 64. He was a 40-year veteran of a big-time hotel business, and his work was his life. But his employer had a rule that you had to leave at age 64. No discussion! Unfair? Yeah, just a little. It gets worse… Age discrimination has been illegal in this country since 1967. But you’d be hard-pressed to convince any boomers of that fact, especially if they, a friend or a relative lose their job after the age of 50. The fact is, age discrimination is alive and well in the U.S., and it is the only kind of discrimination that is accepted and ignored by everyone. Race and sex discrimination have been on the front burner since I was kid. Despite the fact that boomers are retiring in droves (10,000 per day) and many have to work to make it in retirement, holding or finding a job after the age of 50 is next to impossible. Off the top of my head, I can think of two friends who lost their jobs after age 50. One is an attorney. It took him almost two years to find another job. The other, a 35-year veteran of the mutual fund business, couldn’t find another position and had to retire early. Every thinking person knows it was their age that was the barrier. Now, because the Gen Xers are right behind us, the numbers are just getting too big to ignore any longer. But the cavalry may finally be on the horizon. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) just closed an age discrimination case against a restaurant chain, which cost the chain $12 million. The acting chair of the EEOC, Victoria Lipnic, stated in a recent article that age is now an enforcement priority for her commission. This shift in enforcement is too late for the three out of five of us who have been the victims of age discrimination or have seen it in action, but it’s something of a moral victory. Years of research have shown that age is not a predictor of performance. In fact, it has been repeatedly demonstrated that the workplace wisdom older workers bring with them actually makes them more effective and efficient. Fifty years of ignoring this travesty appears to be coming to an end. This has to stop. Not just because it’s wrong, but also because too many boomers have to work well into their golden years and there aren’t enough Walmarts to employ all of us as greeters.)
