Facebook had the highest-paid median employee of technology firms that had filed as of Monday, at $240,430, according to Proxy Insight. The median employee at Valero Energy made $192,837 in 2017. At the real estate investment trust Host Hotels & Resorts, one of the largest owners of luxury and upscale hotels, the median salary is $179,574. The highest median pay in the financial industry, according to Proxy Insight’s data, was at a reinsurance firm rather than a big Wall Street bank. In addition to publishing the CEO pay ratio, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s rule requires companies to disclose the pay of the median employee used in the calculation — determined by statistical sampling or by listing the compensation in the middle after ranking all workers from highest to lowest paid (excluding the CEO) — but they can’t leave out part-timers, the majority of foreign workers or those who only have seasonal jobs. It’s important to note that the companies at the top of the list don’t necessarily have the highest paid employees on average — just who pays the highest at the median. As a result, the numbers don’t tell most people looking to negotiate offers or compare potential jobs much at all. For one, you’d have to be vying for a job in that category — if the job in question is identifiable at all. McDonald’s, for instance, listed the median worker who made $7,017 in 2017 as “a part-time restaurant crew employee located in Poland,” but whoever made $183,304 at Netflix in 2017 is only identified as the “median employee.”)

Peter Roskam found himself in the national spotlight last year after critics said he refused to meet with constituents and dodged requests to hold a town-hall style public meeting. Roskam, however, dismissed the traditional in-person format as unproductive and boasted of his ability to reach far more people via convenient telephone town halls, which are arranged by his campaign. As election season returns. so does the debate over the way candidates communicate with voters. . .Roskam, of Wheaton, has been in office since 2007 and conducts tele-town halls once a month. The system auto-dials people in the district and invites them to join the call to listen or get in a queue for the chance to ask a question. While there is generally a specific topic assigned for each event, Roskam does not limit the questions to the theme. In a typical call, about a dozen people get the chance to ask questions. The calls allow Roskam’s office to “reach people where they are, in their homes, while maintaining the one-on-one, personal interactions,” according to Roskam’s office. Roskam has taken calls from both supporters and critics during the forums, which are arranged via his campaign website, roskamforcongress.com. “In these meetings, we engage in open dialogue where they share their perspective,” Roskam said. “Reasonable people can disagree, and I’ve met with people from all different walks of life holding many different views on any number of issues.” Roskam’s challenger in the November election, Democrat Sean Casten, a businessman from Downers Grove, is pushing the sitting congressman to engage in more public in-person forums. Instead, Roskam quickly called for a series of debates the day after Casten was declared winner of the March Democratic primary. . .U.S. Rep. (FROM THE ARTICLE: It was almost three years ago that we warned that the College of DuPage Board was risking the public’s money in what we described as its “obsessive and oddly venomous” fixation with the destruction of onetime-president Robert Breuder. While allowing that reasonable people could disagree with Breuder’s style and performance, we also noted that his successor Joseph Collins conceded the controversies that enveloped him were “exaggerated” and his board nemesis Kathy Hamilton acknowledged they were “political.” . . .The legal case has yet to play out so theoretically, we suppose, the college could still win that gamble. But as of our latest tabulation in January, the college’s legal bills in the case had already reached $527,600 and who knows if that’s all of it. Transparency, thy name has not been COD when it comes to all the costs. What we do know is that those bills are going to climb considerably higher. And if the college loses, it not only would be on the hook for whatever damages Breuder wins but most likely also his legal bills as well as the college’s. It’s possible the college’s insurance will pay much of the legal bills. Comforting, although if so, it undoubtedly would affect its future premiums. But it’s also possible its insurer could end up challenging its responsibility if it’s found that the college egregiously mistreated Breuder.)

Robert Winchester, a 15th district committeeman candidate, a key district in southern Illinois, is disputing the validity of the results of his own election and threatening the Illinois Republican Party with legal action if it continues to identify his opponent, state Sen. Chapin Rose, as the winner. (Quick primer: Rose is pro-Rauner/Schneider while Winchester is poised to back Schneider’s opponent for state party chair). Party response: “A majority of Republican precinct committeemen in IL-15 cast their vote for state Sen. Enter the newly-elected Republican State Central Committeemen, who are to meet May 19th to vote on the next chairman. Each of the votes is weighted. The district with the greatest weighted vote? The one under dispute in the 15th. While Rose supports Schneider, Winchester had pledged his support to challenger Mark Shaw, who is Lake County’s GOP Chairman. GOP sources tell us that the unofficial breakdown is pretty closely divided between Schneider and Shaw, making the 15th district outcome all that more impactful. Disunity: If Schneider cannot hold onto power, that’s a direct reflection on Rauner’s weakened grasp of his party. That’s a particularly stinging rebuke since Rauner has almost single-handedly funded the Illinois Republican Party apparatus. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet). The first step in the legal action is expected to be an appeal to the Illinois State Board of Elections, which under law, must certify the votes in party elections. Among other charges, Winchester is expected to challenge the use of votes by acclamation in some counties — a move that gives the candidate with more than half of the votes the entire final tally, which violates party rules and may violate state law. Republican sources said that the Republican Party put up Chapin to run against the incumbent Winchester as punishment for his backing Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) in the Republican primary against Gov. Bruce Rauner. Winchester, who could not be reached for comment, also opposes the re-election of GOP Chairman Tim Schneider. The party’s 18 central committee people, one representing each congressional district, is scheduled to meet May 19 to elect a state chairman, and sources say that Schneider’s re-election bid is in jeopardy. Mark Shaw, Lake County Republican chairman and central committeeman in the 10th Congressional District, said that people should not jump to conclusions about the outcome of the race between Winchester and Rose. “Just because the party said Chapin won doesn’t mean he won,” Shaw said. “Until May 19, there is no party governing board, and Chaplin can’t just show up on that day and act like he’s a committeeman. The results have to be certified first, and I expect the board will find a lot of irregularities in the voting process.” He added that he knows Winchester as a man of “integrity and honesty” and he would not be taking legal action unless he was convinced that election law procedures were violated. Results of the election show that Winchester received zero votes in nine of 33 counties, including four of the 10 most populated, a result that Shaw and others said would be impossible. Several counties, sources said, failed to even offer Winchester as a candidate for consideration. In Fayette County, home to Randy Pollard, Rauner’s downstate director, Winchester was not presented as an option. “Pollard asked for a voice vote by acclamation for Chapin (Rose) and just moved on,” a source said. “He didn’t even mention Winchester was a candidate, much less the incumbent.” Rose also received zero votes in 13 counties carried 100 percent by Winchester. In all, 22 of 33 counties voted by acclamation, representing 63 percent of Rose’s vote and 59 percent of Winchester’s. That pitiful number raises an intriguing question: Is Amazon a high-paying tech company or a low-wage retailer? “Both” is the obvious answer, but to this Amazon aficionado that answer is incomplete. The pay figure, which was disclosed for the first time in Amazon’s annual proxy statement, reflects the large number of low-paid retail and warehouse employees who work for the company. The proxy also disclosed that Bezos was paid $1.68 million, making the ratio of what Bezos was paid and the median pay 59-to-1. What does that ratio tell us? Really, not very much. Bezos, according to the proxy, had a 2017 compensation of $81,840 in salary. The rest was in the form of perks, much of it for “security arrangements” and travel. But Bezos’s pay, which seems rather modest when stacked up against the obscene earnings of many other corporate chiefs, is almost irrelevant. That’s because Bezos is the world’s wealthiest person, with a fortune now estimated at $129 billion (depending upon what Amazon stock is trading at this moment). So that ratio, although accurate, means next to nothing. If you really want to understand the gap between CEO and worker, consider instead the ratio between the net worth of the boss and his employees: I did, and it’s beyond measure. Seriously, 100 billion-to-1 is not an outlandish estimate.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A white supervisor in the Cook County Adult Probation Department has filed a federal lawsuit claiming he was wrongly dismissed last year, while numerous black employees in the department have received little or no discipline for alleged misconduct. Philippe Loizon, a former deputy chief who made about $115,000 a year, on Tuesday sued Chief Judge Timothy Evans, alleging that Evans, the county’s first African-American chief judge, had discriminated against him because of his race. Evans fired Loizon in May 2017 following a series of Tribune investigations into accusations that a rogue unit of officers under Loizon’s command had improperly teamed up with Chicago police and the FBI to conduct warrantless searches of homes, and coerced probationers to work as police informants. The county paid $110,000 to two Chicago men who alleged in federal civil rights lawsuits that probation officers, joined by the FBI and city police, conducted illegal searches of homes. And a series of gun cases fell apart following accusations of those questionable searches. Loizon, who was assigned to desk duty for two years before he was dismissed, said the Tribune’s accusations were false and were “based primarily on information provided to the reporters by convicted felons.” He said he had a “clean personnel record” and received outstanding job reviews during his 29 years with the probation department. He alleged Evans treated him differently because he is white. “Evans imposed discipline against Loizon in a manner and at a level he had never imposed on an African-American employee of the (department), despite conduct of an egregious nature by some of the African-American employees,” according to the suit. Evans’ spokesman, Pat Milhizer, declined to comment, citing a state Supreme Court rule that he said forbids judges and court personnel from commenting on pending court matters. One of Loizon’s lawyers, Gregory Friedman, declined to comment Wednesday, referring the Tribune to a statement he issued last June. In that statement, Friedman said Loizon was an exemplary employee who was wrongly fired, and that the Tribune had “done a great disservice to a good man. “Throughout his employment, Mr. Loizon performed his duties in an outstanding manner and in conformity with Departmental polices,” Friedman wrote then. “Philippe Loizon was a diligent and dedicated probation officer and Deputy Chief.” In his suit, Loizon identified 12 current and former probation officers, all of whom are black, who allegedly committed misconduct or violated department policy, yet received little or no punishment at all. The suit cited a probation officer who frequently worked to turn probationers into police informants; an officer who falsely claimed to meet with probationers who actually turned out to be in jail or dead; and an officer who shot and wounded a 14-year-old boy. Loizon said that none of those employees were disciplined. Loizon is seeking reinstatement as deputy chief, back pay with interest, compensatory and punitive damages, and his lawyers’ fees and expenses.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Last month, the state’s voters decided on the Republican and Democratic nominees for governor. But the primaries behind them, the winners still have to convince those who wanted someone else at the top of the ticket. Incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner probably thought he didn’t need to worry about his only Republican opponent, state Rep. Jeanne Ives, during the primary campaign. In the past, he’d called her a “fringe candidate” and decided to forgo campaigning against her until just a few weeks before election day. When the votes were tallied election night, Rauner had snuck past Ives by just 3 percentage points. It was closer than most expected, and the governor acknowledged that in his victory speech by saying he had heard the message those dissatisfied voters were sending him. “I have traveled the state and I have listened to you,” he said in his election night speech. . .Rauner, on the other hand, must try to get more than the 50 percent of Republicans who voted to renew their trust in him and get them out to the polls in November. Chris Mooney, a political science professor at the University of Illinois Chicago, said the governor has the more difficult task of restoring trust with a large segment of his party’s base. “And so the question is can Rauner look to them – he doesn’t have to worry about them voting for Pritzker, I think that’s pretty clear. What he has to do is get them to come out to vote in November.” . . . Rauner has done his best to separate himself from President Trump, but there are similarities in their backgrounds. Both tout success in business and very wealthy. Rauner’s wealth has been a key rallying point for Democrats, who view him as out of touch with the working class and spotlight his attacks on organized labor to make their point. . .Rauner has been traveling the state campaigning, it appears he has yet to bring Ives’ backers into the fold. This may not be an easy feat to accomplish – even for the wealthy governor. Ives was heavily outspent, but she was able to easily tap into the dissatisfaction among conservatives who felt Rauner had broken his promise on key legislation, including a measure to allow public funding for abortions. Despite a push from conservative groups – and even Chicago Cardinal Blaise Cupich – to hold the governor to his word, Rauner signed the legislation into law. Ives herself makes that point, saying many of her supporters feel betrayed. “There are supporter voters of mine, they are saying we are not going to vote for him regardless of what he says.” While the circumstances might be different, the insurgent campaign Ives ran harkens to Donald Trump defeating establishment Republicans on his way to the White House. Those who felt left out, or maybe taken for granted, went for Trump and sent a message. In Illinois, Rauner doesn’t deny there is still work for him to do. Soon after election night, Rauner hit the campaign trail to acknowledge there were some divisive issues. “And I know now, as I’ve known for a while that we need to find common ground to bridge the divides.” As for Ives, she has said she will vote for Rauner but made it clear she has no plans to campaign for him. While both Pritzker and Rauner will spend the next several months telling all voters why they should be elected, they’ll also be busy mending fences – in their own political backyards.)

They’re the Californians who will lose a collective $12 billion because the new law caps a deduction they have been able to take for paying their state and local taxes, according to a new analysis by the Franchise Tax Board. Very wealthy Californians earning more than $1 million a year will pay the lion’s share of that money, with 43,000 of them paying a combined $9 billion. It’s not all coming from the wealthy. Another $1.1 billion will come from households earning less than $250,000, hiking their tax liability $4400 on average. That’s not peanuts, but it’s a far cry from the average $209,302 per family that will be owed by those households earning more than a million dollars a year. Put this another way. That represents the federal tax liabilities that everyone else in the country subsidized through SALT. The “progressive” income tax used taxes paid by people in low-tax states to repay the wealthy for their taxes in places like California. The SALT deduction really only comes into play for people who can itemize enough to outstrip the standard deductions, so its benefit plays mostly to the wealthy anyway. It also plays mostly to the benefit of a very few states. California and New York taxpayers soak up almost third of all benefits from SALT deductions; add in New Jersey, Illinois, Texas, and Pennsylvania, and they account for more than half of its benefits.)
