CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— FRONT PAGE WITH COLOR PICTURE: Are video games addictive like drugs, gambling? Some who’ve struggled say yes – John Keilman  (DIERSEN: The more that you oppose vices like I do, the harder that those who promote vices work against you.  Those who promote vices in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois work especially hard against me.  Republicans oppose the promotion of vices.  Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, and RINOs promote vices.)

DAILY HERALD
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD WITH COLOR PHOTOS OF MCSWEENEY AND DRURY: What happens when two suburban lawmakers defy Rauner, Madigan – Kerry Lester (DIERSEN: Who do you defy?  I defy Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC), DuPage County Republican Central Committee, and Illinois Republican Party (IRP) leaders who are Democrat plants, Libertarian plants, Green plants, and RINOs a) when I promote the traditional family, right to life, immigration, illegal drugs, equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving), and other planks in the IRP platform and in the Republican Party platform and b) when I promote the MTRCC resolution against video gambling.  What has happened to me?  I am no longer the TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, a Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, the MTRCC webmaster, an Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, or an American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20170530/what-happens-when-two-suburban-lawmakers-defy-rauner-madigan
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But going it alone is not without costs, big or small. When engraved clocks by Irish-American designer Simon-Pearce were handed out to the rest of the Democratic caucus earlier this year, Drury didn’t get one. . .Subsequently, Drury was removed from his spot on the judiciary committee. Most bills Drury has sponsored this session have landed in a sort of legislative purgatory — the rules committee — and would emerge only if Madigan and Democratic leaders allowed it, something Drury has pointed out in news releases. . .Drury says he gets praise back home in his North suburban district, but at the Capitol, he’s ostracized and spends much of his free time on his own. During Democratic caucus meetings, he appears sullen and withdrawn and often leaves the party sessions early when Democrats begin discussing upcoming votes on important bills. . .McSweeney rarely attends caucus meetings at all. “The governor doesn’t need to tell me what to do. And that’s what the Republican caucus is, getting marching orders from the governor’s office,” said McSweeney, an investment specialist. Instead, McSweeney spends his time trying to drum up votes for the bills he hopes to pass and dining with Democratic lawmakers and close confidants of Madigan. He’s made a habit of inviting members of the black caucus, including Democratic state Rep. Christian Mitchell of Chicago, to town hall meetings in his Northwest suburban district. Unlike Drury’s experience, where many of his bills have died in committee, McSweeney said he hasn’t been retaliated upon by the GOP, and his bills — which also depend on Democratic leaders calling them for a vote — have tended to pass by wide, bipartisan margins. . .Both Drury and McSweeney have the financial wherewithal and the help of wealthy friends to fund their campaigns without depending on party leaders for donations. Neither received more than $1,500 from party sources in the last election cycle, Illinois State Board of Elections records show.)
— FRONT PAGE: Bill to stop cop pension double dipping, based on Naperville case, passes – Chacour Koop  (DIERSEN: If I sought a government office or a political office, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would shout that I get both a Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) pension ($50,856/year) and Social Security ($2,028/year). In my defense, my Social Security is dramatically reduced because I get a CSRS pension.)

CHICAGO NOW
— Special Memorial Day thanks to military draftees killed in action – Dennis Byrne  (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those who used/use my getting student draft deferments 1966-1970 and my getting a financial draft hardship 1970-1971 against me.  Most of them were my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government.)
http://www.chicagonow.com/dennis-byrnes-barbershop/2017/05/special-memorial-day-thanks-to-military-draftees-killed-in-action/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On this Memorial Day, here is a special recognition of men who were conscripted into the military and who were killed in action. Volunteering for hazardous military duty and paying for it with your life deserves the highest praise. But what about those men who were drafted, who had no choice and who were killed? Today, memories of the draft have faded and the reality of Selective Service are absent in the lives of so many Americans. It is hard for today’s generations, mainly post-Baby Boomer, to know what it is like for government to order you into combat. For notification to report to a certain military installation on a certain date to be inducted into the Army. To be hauled off to basic training, to be told how to meet your responsibility to kill people. To be transported to front lines where people are dying. To either fire your weapon and fight, or be court marshaled. Failure to report for your military draft would result in imprisonment or fines and immediate induction. Today, the governing principle is that “It’s my body and no one can tell me what to do with it.” That’s mostly the mantra of the abortion industry and women’s rights advocates. But the philosophy certain has successfully seeped into today’s package of taken-for-granted men’s rights. A draft is simply inconceivable in today’s culture of extreme individualism. Today’s generations have no concept of what life was like when you had to plan for at least two years of military service. No “gap” year allowed. Avoiding the draft has a major concern, as important if not more so, than picking a college or a career. College deferments, which ultimately would run out. Getting married, but that deferment disappeared as the Vietnam War grew hotter. Teaching or certain other occupations. Using a connection to find  a slot in a high-demand reserve unit. In the Vietnam War, draftees accounted for 30.4 percent, or 17,725 combat deaths. Some 1.9 million men were drafted from 1964 to 1973.  In World War II, 61.2 percent of military men, or 11,5 million men, were draftees. While a large number of men were volunteers, in a manner of speaking, they also in reality were inductees. The draft, as designed, encouraged young men to “volunteer” for other branches of the service than the Army. “Volunteer” service in the Navy or Air Force was at least a year longer, but the chances of getting maimed or killed in combat were less. The draft always has been controversial, less so in time of national emergency such as World War II. But barring the most extraordinary crisis, today’s culture has killed all possibility of it returning (even though men today are still required to register for selective service). By the way, the stereotype of the Vietnam veteran is way off base. The image of the poorly educated, reluctant, drugged out and minority Vietnam soldier needs to be changed according to  Fact vs. Fiction. Check it out.)

CHICAGO ARGUS
— Memorial Day; ‘yea’ or ‘nae’ for those who do their military service? – Gregory Tejeda  (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those who used/use my getting student draft deferments 1966-1970 and my getting a financial draft hardship 1970-1971 against me.  Most of them were my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government.)
http://chicagoargus.blogspot.com/2017/05/memorial-day-yea-or-nae-for-those-who.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I never served in any branch of the military; that fact doesn’t make me the least bit unique. There are many who for whatever reason manage to avoid a stint in the Army or any other military organization, and certainly don’t think our lives are any less complete as a result. OF COURSE, THERE also are those in our society who made a point of enlisting the first chance they got, and wind up thinking of their time in uniform and being among those who “serve their country” as the high point of their lives! Some even come away with thinking their military record entitles them to prime treatment for the remainder of their lives. We have a serious schism in our society; often viewing various issues quite differently. And not just a matter of whether we think Donald Trump is a “great American” or a “pompous fool” totally unfit to be carrying the title of Commander-in-Chief of our nation’s military! That split includes how essential we think it is that one have a military service record as part of their permanent record, or how much “lip service” they pay to the concept — I attended a Catholic mass that included a musical tribute to the armed services in its choir’s Sunday program; and while many were eager to support the idea, only a tiny minority of the congregation admitted to actually having served. Which gets down to the essence of the direction we think our society ought to be headed. THERE ARE THOSE people who will say that one reason, if not the primary reason, that Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were unfit to be president is because they never served in the military (and in the case of Clinton used many of the legal maneuvers people of that era engaged in to avoid a call-up to active duty). Some of an older generation remember back to the military draft, and think that forcing people of various economic and social classes to interact helped ease the societal split that now exists. Although others, including those who managed to avoid military service, would argue that the very concept of having done a stretch in the military puts a person into a mindset that makes them too narrow and unfit to address the serious problems confronting our nation, and our world. Perhaps we all ought to be engaged in something more than blind faith in forcing esoteric concepts of what one wants to define as patriotism by a trip out to the cemetery to pay tribute to someone who was unfortunate to have lost their life during their military service. SOME OF US like to talk about the “ultimate sacrifice” those young men made, I’m sure many of them could have contributed something equally worthwhile to society had they had a chance at a long- and full-life. While many of those who these days do enlist in the military often do so because their options in life are limited; and that military stretch may be their best option for preparing for an adult life. I remember in my own case, my mother would have been appalled if I had seriously talked about enlisting. I remember when Army recruiters sniffed around me when I was 16 and in high school, she gave them the cold shoulder. In my case, that probably was a wise direction. I did make the most of a college education, and it stirred me in the right direction toward what I wanted to do (yes, I actually figured out as far back as age 13 that I wanted to be a reporter-type person). I resisted the Army’s marketing pleas to “be all you can be.” WHILE I HAD cousins who did stints of military service, and it helped them come up with the funds to pay for future education options they took on or taught them some skills used later in life. It worked out well for them, and I’m sure for many of the individuals who have done military service. My point in stating all this is that I’m not about to hold it over anybody’s head that I didn’t have to use the military to get ahead in life. Meaning I’m not about to defer to those who want to act as though the fact that they did a stretch in uniform somehow makes them superior. I actually find such an attitude to be arrogant and unfit for anyone to have in our society. Particularly because it places a view that one can claim superiority for doing something that may well have been their only realistic option in life. And on this Memorial Day when we pay tribute to the contributions of military personnel throughout our history, perhaps I should even throw in that having such an attitude perhaps even qualifies as un-American!)

Kennedy, a 43-year-old Democrat who had served in the House and the Senate, was the youngest. At the 100-day mark, Trump’s public approval rating was 41%. Kennedy’s was 83%. Trump was granted five draft deferments during the Vietnam war; Kennedy received military honors for saving the lives of crewmates when their torpedo boat was struck by a Japanese destroyer during the second world war. Trump infamously does not read books, gives disjointed speeches and has claimed: “You have to be wealthy in order to be great.” Kennedy was fond of referencing ancient Greeks and Shakespeare, won a Pulitzer prize for the book Profiles in Courage, and once declared: “This country cannot afford to be materially rich and spiritually poor.”)

— Say ‘no’ to Springfield casino – Anita Bedell, Executive Drector, Illinois Church Action on Alcohol & Addiction Problems
http://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20170527/letter-say-no-to-springfield-casino
(FROM THE LETTER: According to the State Journal-Register, a developer, who also is a lobbyist who owns video gambling parlors and a medical marijuana dispensary, wants to put a casino in downtown Springfield. A casino is different from other businesses because of the social problems and costs gambling creates. Gambling comes with high costs of addiction, bankruptcy, crime, family problems and suicide. Springfield has more video gambling machines than any place in Illinois. Area residents have lost over $100 million in the 576 gambling machines. In April, area residents gambled away over $2.5 million. Sangamon County has the equivalent of a casino with 1,027 gambling machines. Adding a casino will increase problems for individuals, families and the community. The poor, minorities and the addicted will especially be negatively impacted. Gambling interests overestimate the amount of revenue projected and don’t include any costs in the calculation. According to definitive academic studies, the socioeconomic costs of casinos are $3 or more for every $1 in benefit. Over 75 percent of the revenue at casinos comes from slot/video gambling machines like the ones already operating here. Fewer workers are required, and they have a higher rate of gambling addiction than the general population. Rep. Tim Butler has filed an amendment to include a Springfield casino in the massive gambling expansion bill the Senate passed. Transparency is needed for this important public policy issue, not working behind closed doors out of the public view. Call the mayor, city council, and state legislators to voice your concerns.)

http://www.sj-r.com/news/20170527/big-retirement-payouts-tiny-part-of-big-pension-mess
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois’ budget mess is the stepchild of Illinois’ pension mess, and nothing incites more steam-from-the-ears fury than the volume of six-figure annual retirement payouts — topped by one at $581,000 — pledged to former public workers. . .Just 4 percent of all beneficiaries this year are in line for pension paydays exceeding $100,000, with the biggest checks largely going to former school administrators as well as doctors and dentists at public teaching hospitals. Payments for the overwhelming majority of pensioners, most of whom don’t qualify for Social Security, are far more modest. The median pension in 2017 for retired suburban and downstate teachers stands at $52,016, the analysis shows, while the median for general state workers is $28,946. For university workers, the median pension stands at $26,101, while for non-public safety municipal workers outside of Chicago, it is $9,064.)

— OUTRAGEOUS: DuPage committee to revisit ban on video gaming in unincorporated areas – Gary Gibula  (DIERSEN: Please join Kathy Gilroy, me, and others who will speak at the DuPage County Finance Committee meeting Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at 7:30 AM, in favor of keeping the ban on video gambling in unincorporated DuPage County.  If you are in DuPage County, please urge DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin, the 18 DuPage County Board members, and especially, the 3 board members who represent your district, to vote to keep the ban.  In 2009, the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) unanimously passed a resolution against video gambling throughout DuPage County.  Since then, no MTRCC member has done anything to rescind that resolution.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/news/ct-nvs-dupage-video-gaming-revisited-st-0528-20170527-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: DuPage County Board committee will discuss the possible repeal of its 2009 ban on video gaming for businesses located in unincorporated areas. Board member Paul Fichtner told the board last week the matter will be discussed at the June 13 Finance Committee meeting. “It was the consensus of the committee to discuss this and perhaps make a decision at that same meeting three weeks from now,” Fichtner said. “Because of the nature of the topic and the interest it may bring, I’m suggesting we start at 7:30 a.m.”  Board member Jim Zay requested the committee address the matter. “Obviously, we’ve been getting emails and public comment (from people interested in the repeal), so I think it’s time to take another look at it,” Zay said. “I’m not saying we’re in favor of it or against it, but it’s time to listen to their concerns and see what’s going on. A lot of things have changed since 2009 with video gaming so I think it’s time for the board to give these people an opportunity to hear their concerns and look at it again.” Individuals both for and against video gaming have spoken at the last three county board meetings. Jeremy Truex, co-owner of a tavern located in an unincorporated part of Lombard, is among those who think the prohibition should be removed. “The county is missing out on some serious tax revenue,” Truex said. “You’ve got people going to other municipalities and spending their money, whereas they could be spending it in unincorporated DuPage County with all its small businesses.” Will County, which does allow video gaming in unincorporated areas, collected $198,915 in tax distributions in 2016 from the 27 establishments licensed for video gaming, according to the Illinois Gaming Board. In Kane County, 12 such businesses earned $134,694 in tax distributions last year, and 61 businesses with video gaming earned $623,636 for Lake County over the same 12-month period, state numbers show. Some counties, like Cook, do not permit video gaming in unincorporated areas. Will County instituted a ban on any new licenses in April 2015, citing loopholes and liberal state regulations that permit video gaming in unexpected places like gas stations. The 31 Aurora businesses with licenses for video gaming include restaurants, pubs, private social clubs and fraternal organizations such as Amvets and a Moose lodge. The city of Aurora took in $332,045 in tax distributions from those establishments in 2016. Naperville adopted a city-wide ban on video gaming in October 2009. In an email statement, Naperville communications manager Linda LaCloche affirmed Wednesday, “the city of Naperville continues to support our decision to opt out of the Illinois Video Gaming Act.” While video gaming has earned nearly $171 million in tax distributions for counties and municipalities since 2012, some critics say the activity erodes the amount of money gamblers spend at casinos and boats, where it is permitted. In its ordinance prohibiting video gaming, Naperville cited the activity as being inconsistent with family values, being associated with corruption and enticing players to game faster for longer periods of time and at higher rates of wagering, according to a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At a previous DuPage County Board meeting, Villa Park resident Kathy Gilroy asserted that the board “had no duty to level the playing field. This board has a duty to the welfare of county residents.” Zay and Jim Healy were on the board eight years ago when the video gaming ban was instituted. “I don’t think attitudes have changed very much since 2009,” Healy said. “Obviously, we’ll wait to hear what people have to say. At this moment, nothing has changed in my mind.” The Finance Committee will meet at 7:30am on June 13 in the County Board Room of the Jack T. Knuepfer Administration Building, 421 North County Farm Road, in Wheaton.)

— After the Confederates, Who’s Next? – Patrick J. Buchanan
http://www.gopusa.com/?p=24928
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Behind this remorseless drive to blast the greatest names from America’s past off public buildings, and to tear down their statues and monuments, is an egalitarian extremism rooted in envy and hate. Among its core convictions is that spreading Christianity was a cover story for rapacious Europeans who, after discovering America, came in masses to dispossess and exterminate native peoples. “The white race,” wrote Susan Sontag, “is the cancer of human history.” Today, the men we were taught to revere as the great captains, explorers, missionaries and nation-builders are seen by many as part of a racist, imperialist, genocidal enterprise, wicked men who betrayed and eradicated the peace-loving natives who had welcomed them. What they blindly refuse to see is that while its sins are scarlet, as are those of all civilizations, it is the achievements of the West that are unrivaled. The West ended slavery. Christianity and the West gave birth to the idea of inalienable human rights. As scholar Charles Murray has written, 97 percent of the world’s most significant figures and 97 percent of the world’s greatest achievements in the arts, architecture, literature, astrology, biology, earth sciences, physics, medicine, mathematics and technology came from the West. What is disheartening is not that there are haters of our civilization out there, but that there seem to be fewer defenders. Of these icon-smashers it may be said: Like ISIS and Boko Haram, they can tear down statues, but these people could never build a country. What happens, one wonders, when these Philistines discover that the seated figure in the statue, right in front of D.C.’s Union Station, is the High Admiral of the Ocean Sea, Christopher Columbus?)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-illinois-middle-class-0523-biz-20170522-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Meantime, Illinois’ median household income among the middle class has grown very modestly over that period, to $80,800 in 2015 from $79,300 in 1980, adjusting for inflation. But high-income households have seen their median income jump 14.5 percent, to $192,900 from $168,500. The median pay for low-income households has barely budged, to $26,100 from $25,800. . . Measuring the middle class is challenging, the report said, in part because it isn’t clear how to define it given associations with education and occupation type. The report’s analysis measured middle class by income level, adjusted for household size. So households earning more than two-thirds of the state’s median income and less than double the state’s median income — between $43,000 and $130,000 — are considered middle class.)

ILLINOIS HOMEPAGE
— GOP seeks recruits to oppose Mendoza, Madigan  GOP searching for ‘electable’ candidates – Mark Maxwell (DIERSEN: Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. According to my critics/opponents, a) the Republican Party platform is the problem, b) the more planks in that platform that a candidate supports, the less likely that they will win, and c) to win, candidates should stress those planks that they reject.  My critics especially want candidates who reject the immigration, traditional family, right to life, illegal drugs, gambling, and Second Amendment planks.  They especially want candidates who hate Trump.  They especially want candidates who are minority, female, and/or younger.)
http://www.illinoishomepage.net/news/local-news/gop-seeks-recruits-to-oppose-mendoza-madigan/719204123
(FROM THE ARTICLE:  Governor Bruce Rauner and his inner circle of political advisors are holding private meetings to vet candidates they hope could unseat Comptroller Susana Mendoza and Attorney General Lisa Madigan in the 2018 election. Democrats running to unseat Rauner have garnered most of the public attention to date, but behind closed doors, Republicans are already forming a deep roster and consulting with top party donors before making any public commitments to back candidates. The secretive casting calls are starting to creating tension within the party as leaders mull over their next move. According to sources with knowledge of these discussions, Rauner’s chief political strategist Mike Zolnierowicz is actively recruiting and meeting with candidates who may show potential to upstage some of the governor’s political rivals in a statewide election. By all accounts, these conversations remain in the very early stages, and several of the candidates themselves remain uncertain about their own standing with the party leadership. Former Comptroller Leslie Munger is rumored to be angling for a chance to regain her seat in 2018, but party leaders have privately expressed concerns about her electability after losing a rough election last fall. Although he did not respond to requests for comment, Zolnierowicz continues to explore other options for the high stakes Comptroller race. After losing to Mendoza last November, Munger was awarded a pay raise to a salary of $138,000 as one of two deputy governors in the Rauner administration. When asked about her plans to run for reelection, she replied, “No comment.” Republicans openly admit they are gearing up for a broader campaign to overtake a majority in the House, which would effectively demote reigning Speaker Michael Madigan. The party would need to pick up 9 seats to unseat Madigan. It only managed to gain 4 seats during the 2016 election, narrowly escaping the Democratic supermajority. Representative Tim Butler (R-Springfield) acknowledges unseating Madigan is a long shot, but he contends Democrats have several vulnerable candidates in districts where he believes the GOP can compete. Defeating Madigan’s daughter may prove to be the tougher task. Zolnierowicz, who left his post as Rauner’s chief of staff to become the party’s top strategist last summer, is said to have come down to a short list of candidates to oppose Madigan, yet concerns about name recognition and credentials prolong the decision. Rauner’s campaign communications director Kirsten Kukowski and Illinois GOP spokesmen Steven Yaffe and Aaron DeGroot declined to comment for this article.)

http://www.aauw.org/research/deeper-in-debt/
(FROM THE POSTING: Student loan debt is now a $1.3-trillion problem burdening 44 million borrowers. Experts are talking about the effects of student debt on the economy, but they aren’t talking about its disproportionate effects on women. AAUW takes a close look at that oversight in the new research report Deeper in Debt: Women and Student Loans. Women’s success in postsecondary education is shrinking the gender pay gap and opening up opportunities, but at what price? Women not only take on more student debt than men do, but women also pay back their loans more slowly because of the gender pay gap. While higher education is seen as a path to financial stability, taking on student debt is a gamble, and it’s a bigger risk for some women: Low-income students, students with dependent children, and students who drop out of college are all at higher risk of defaulting on student loans. AAUW advocates for grants, programs, and resources that can keep college accessible for those who have the most to gain.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/evanston/news/ct-evr-evanston-racial-discrimination-lawsuit-tl-0504-20170519-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A former Evanston public works director Suzette Robinson is suing the city and several city officials for what the lawsuit alleges was “discrimination on the basis of race, harassment and [a] racially hostile work environment, and for retaliation.” However, Evanston’s city manager, who was named as one of the defendants in the suit, said Suzette Robinson’s race played no part in the decision to eliminate her job. “I deny Ms. Robinson’s claims in this lawsuit that race or retaliation had any role in my decision-making,” said Evanston City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz. In the complaint, filed May 27, 2016, in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Robinson asks for $75,000 in compensation, plus attorney’s fees and punitive damages. She names Bobkiewicz, the City of Evanston, city attorney W. Grant Farrar and human resources manager Jennifer Lin as defendants. According to the lawsuit, Robinson was public works director for Evanston from March 2010 until August 2015. The suit said that she was one of “three African-American employees at the department director level reporting directly to Bobkiewicz.” The complaint reads that Robinson’s position was eliminated, “effective immediately,” in August 2015 after Bobkiewicz stated “that the city planned to combine public works and utilities into one department named the public works agency.” But the lawsuit says the City Council did not approve the “proposed reorganization” until September 2015. Robinson alleges that Bobkiewicz “discriminated against her on the basis of race” and “retaliated against her” “for filing complaints about racial discrimination,” according to court documents.)

— The Conservative Force Behind Speeches Roiling College Campuses – STEPHANIE SAUL  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, schools crank out hate-filled “good little Democrats” who are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/20/us/college-conservative-speeches.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE:  “Let’s give it up for the racists that are hosting this event!” someone yelled, and the crowd roared, foot-stomping in unison, then breaking into song: Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.” One member of the audience held up a sign, “Queers Against Islamaphobia.” Another unfurled a banner: “Muslims Welcome. Fascists Get Out.” Close to 200 students kept up the noise for more than an hour in a University at Buffalo lecture hall on May 1, mostly drowning out the evening’s featured speaker, Robert Spencer, a conservative author and blogger who espouses a dark view of Islam. The event appeared to follow a familiar script, in which a large contingent of liberals muzzles a provocative speaker invited by a small conservative student club. But the propelling force behind the event — and a number of recent heat-seeking speeches on college campuses — was a national conservative group that is well funded, highly organized and on a mission, in its words, to “restore sanity at your school.” The group, the Young America’s Foundation, had paid Mr. Spencer’s $2,000 fee, trained the student leader who organized the event and provided literature for distribution. Other than the possibility of outside interference, little had been left to chance. The speeches are a part of the group’s mission of grooming future conservative leaders — Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Stephen Miller, a White House adviser, are among its alumni — and its long list of donors has included the television game show host Pat Sajak, the novelist Tom Clancy, the billionaire brothers David H. and Charles G. Koch, and the Amway billionaires Richard and Helen Devos, who gave $10 million to endow the Reagan Ranch near Santa Barbara, Calif., which the foundation runs as a preserve. (Their daughter-in-law, Betsy DeVos, the secretary of education, is not a donor, the group says.) Over the past two years, armed with a $16 million infusion from the estate of an orthodontist in California, Robert Ruhe, the organization has doubled its programming, including campus speeches. In 2016 that meant 111 speakers on 77 campuses. On the group’s website, it boasted of “dispatching” 31 speakers to colleges last month alone. In that time, the speakers have gotten edgier, more in-your-face and sometimes even meanspirited. Among them is Ann Coulter, whose canceled speech last month at the University of California, Berkeley, led the foundation, which was covering most of her $20,000 fee, to sue the college, arguing that it had violated the First Amendment in its failure to provide a suitable time and place for the event. The resulting clashes on university campuses, including protests and efforts to block speeches, have raised free speech questions. And at Berkeley, even liberals who oppose Ms. Coulter’s viewpoints said her speech should have been allowed to proceed. In the meantime, protesters have questioned whether such events are cynically intended to provoke reactions. “It’s part of a larger systematic and extremely well-funded effort to disrupt public universities and create tension among student groups on campus,” said Alexandra Prince, a doctoral student at Buffalo who circulated a petition to block Mr. Spencer.)

— Trump’s 2018 Budget Reportedly Targets Federal Retirement Programs – Erich Wagne  (DIERSEN: One reason why federal pay, benefits, and pensions should be more generous is compensate federal employees and federal retirees for being viciously demonized, denigrated, and condemned for being federal employees and for being federal retirees.  I should write a book about those in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who are filled with hatred of federal employees and of federal retirees.)
http://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits/2017/05/trumps-2018-budget-reportedly-targets-federal-retirement-programs/138014/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The proposed cuts to retirement benefits sparked swift condemnation by Democrats and groups representing federal workers and retirees. Richard Thissen, national president of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, called the proposal an “egregious attack on federal service and seniors” and “unconscionable.”  “The president purports to defend government annuities like Social Security and then proposes to eliminate cost-of-living adjustments for some and limit COLAs for those already retired and living on fixed incomes,” Thissen said. “It is beyond insulting. It is downright mean. Simultaneously promoting tax cuts and forcing a tax on just federal employees, through an increase in retirement contributions, is the height of hypocrisy.” J. David Cox, national president of the American Federation of Government Employees blasted the plan as something that “defies reason.” “The American people knows what’s fair, and raiding the already-modest retirement benefits of the people who inspect our food and lock up dangerous criminals is beyond the pale,” Cox said. “These proposals portray an astounding misplacement of priorities that the American public should not soon forget.” And Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., said cuts to federal retirement benefits will hurt the government’s ability to attract workers capable of fulfilling the missions of various federal agencies. “The biggest losers from President Trump’s draconian cuts to federal employee pay and benefits will be the American people who count on dedicated federal employees to care for our veterans, maintain our national parks, and process Social Security checks each and every day,” Connolly said. “Cuts of this magnitude will make it impossible to recruit and retain the qualified workforce we need to meet our nation’s challenges.”)

MADISON RECORD
— A 1972 court order prohibits political hiring for non-political state positions. – Editorial
http://madisonrecord.com/stories/511113728-illegally-hired-state-employees-need-to-be-fired
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Did you know that patronage hiring is illegal in Illinois? Well, it is.  A 1972 court order prohibits political hiring for non-political state positions. It’s been ignored too often for many of the last 45 years, but it’s still in effect, and we now have a governor who wants to abide by it and thinks it should be enforced. The big problem for Bruce Rauner is that state employee rolls are already riddled with patronage hires and any attempt to identify them and weed them out is going to be resisted by the public employee unions to which they belong. In 2014, Federal Magistrate Judge Sidney Schenkier, who is overseeing ongoing proceedings in the case (Shakman) that led to the 1972 court order, appointed Noelle Brennan as a special master to investigate the hiring practices of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). On April 24 of this year, Special Master Brennan reported that state officials (including Rep. Jay Hoffman of Belleville and Sen. James Clayborne of East St. Louis) had abused a special hiring exemption to place at least dozens of friends, family, and supporters into so-called “staff assistant” positions at IDOT and other state agencies, in violation of the 1972 court order. “The governor’s office [in the previous administration] received, reviewed, forwarded, and tracked resumes,” Brennan affirmed; “most of those candidates had a political connection; and many of the politically connected candidates hired … lacked any policy or other relevant experience.” The following day, Gov. Rauner  filed a “motion for clarification” in Chicago federal court, asking for guidance as to whether state employees improperly hired through political connections can use collective bargaining agreements to remain in their positions, transfer to others, or be promoted. In other words, do the state’s collective bargaining agreements and related labor relations documents trump the court decree prohibiting patronage hiring? The abuses perpetrated by Pat Quinn, Mike Madigan, and other insubordinate public servants need to stopped.)

— Would you let the IRS automatically file your taxes on your behalf? – Peter Hong  (DIERSEN: While I worked for IRS’s Collection Division 1971-1980, I filed “substitute returns” for individuals, organizations, and companies that failed/refused to file.)
http://netrightdaily.com/2017/05/would-you-let-the-irs-automatically-file-your-taxes-on-your-behalf/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: What’s the second most dangerous pickup line in America? “Hi, I’m from the government and I’m here to help.” The most dangerous, you ask? “I’m from the IRS, and I’m here to help.” Yet, that’s exactly what every American taxpayer will be hearing if the “Tax Filing Simplification Act” is ever enacted into law. Introduced by Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, this bill would direct our friends at the Internal Revenue Service to fill out your tax returns with information the IRS collects from your employer and your bank. All you have to do is sign on the dotted line — and pay the amount the IRS has so generously pre-determined for you.)
— Clock-watchers: Federal employees get raises about every other year on the job – Robert Romano  (DIERSEN: Except for 1980, when I took an $18,847 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO, my salary increased every year that I worked for the federal government 1966-1969 and 1971-1997 because of COLAs, step increases, and/or promotions.  In my defense, I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 33.)

ONE NEWS NOW
— A widening love-my-country gap from Democrats – Chad Groening  (DIERSEN: What do you say to those who discourage Republican activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. from supporting Wheaton’s Independence Day parades?)
https://www.onenewsnow.com/culture/2017/05/09/a-widening-love-my-country-gap-from-dems
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Longtime conservative activist Gary Bauer is concerned about the growing patriotism gap between the two major political parties in America. A recent Gallup poll found that fewer Democrats are proud to be Americans. The survey, conducted in March 2017, revealed 67 percent of Democrats are “extremely proud” or “very proud” to be Americans; that compares to 78 percent in 2016. There was little change among Republicans and Independents. In fact, the survey shows Republicans’ pride at 92 percent. Gallup reports the current 25-point gap in patriotic feelings between Republicans and Democrats is the highest in Gallup’s records. In January 2007, the party gap was 21 points. Gary Bauer of the Campaign for Working Families recently wrote on American Thinker that this patriotism gap is getting far less attention than it deserves. “There is a growing radical left in the Democratic Party,” Bauer tells OneNewsNow. “And there is a growing movement among young Americans who tend to be leaning toward the left politically who are not traditionally patriotic any longer.” Bauer thinks there are several reasons for that, including the anti-American history being taught in colleges and universities. “And then there’s this tendency on the radical left to see America as a country that oppresses people, that was built on slavery,” he says. “So it’s a serious issue when there is declining patriotism overall. It’s a serious issue when the left wing of one party seems to be declining in its patriotic feelings. “Bauer says it’s particularly troubling when younger Americans have lower levels of patriotism than any American generation in modern history.)

BUZPAC REVIEW
— Trump signing statement ends federal goodies for minorities and women; treats all Americans equally – Tom Tillison (DIERSEN: To give preference to one group is to discriminate against another group.  To give preference to citizens of foreign countries, non-Protestants, Democrats, minorities, females, younger people, veterans, recent immigrants, etc. IS TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST citizens of America, Protestants, Republicans, Whites, males, older people, non-veterans, non-recent immigrants, etc.)
http://www.bizpacreview.com/2017/05/06/trump-signing-statement-ends-federal-goodies-minorities-women-treats-americans-equally-486532
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump included a signing statement when he signed the spending bill that funds the federal government through September that effectively puts an end to affirmative action when it comes to taxpayer-funded grants. Imagine that, treating Americans equally. Pointing to the Constitution, the president said he will treat programs established by Congress that give preferences based on race and sex for grants “consistent with the requirement to afford equal protection of the laws,” the USA Today reported. Provisions described as “impermissible forms of congressional aggrandizement in the execution of the laws.” The signing statement reads: “My Administration shall treat provisions that allocate benefits on the basis of race, ethnicity, and gender in a manner consistent with the requirement to afford equal protection of the laws under the Due Process Clause of the Constitution’s Fifth Amendment.” The Daily Mail reported on programs named in the statement: “The signing statement specifically mentions a $654 million set-aside for Native American and Native Alaskan housing block grants; a $34 million appropriation for the Commerce Department’s Minority Business Development Agency; more than $20 million to guarantee loans to historically black colleges and universities; and $15 million to boost payments to ‘native Hawaiian’ defense contractors.” All of which is sure to have minority groups and women crying foul… while millions of white American males feel a little more equal today. For the record, signing statements are not exclusive to the Trump presidency. The Washington Times reported that “Presidents [Barack] Obama and George W. Bush issued dozens of ‘signing statements’ spelling out areas where they disagreed with congressional intent in various legislation, and asserting their executive authority to carry out the law as they saw fit.” Other areas addressed on Friday include weapons programs, state and local marijuana laws and Guantanamo Bay.)

THINK PROGRESS
— GOP congressman supports covering pre-existing conditions, but only for people who ‘lead good lives’ – Adam Peck  (DIERSEN: Individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries that promote risky/unhealthy/harmful/destructive/hazardous/dangerous lifestyles want to get rid of me.  The aforesaid promote LGBTQ activity, promiscuity, abortion, booze, gambling, pot, and even worse things.)
https://thinkprogress.org/gop-congressman-supports-covering-pre-existing-conditions-but-only-for-people-who-have-led-good-51944a953f0e
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But as Rep. Brooks sees it, being afflicted with a serious or life-threatening pre-existing condition is the price you pay if you don’t live a healthy lifestyle. “My understanding is that it will allow insurance companies to require people who have higher health care costs to contribute more to the insurance pool,” said Brooks. “That helps offset all these costs, thereby reducing the cost to those people who lead good lives, they’re healthy, they’ve done the things to keep their bodies healthy. And right now those are the people—who’ve done things the right way—that are seeing their costs skyrocketing.” . . . Rep. Brooks’ argument echoes a similar one made by Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) several weeks ago when the House was debating the first version of Trumpcare. With a fancy chart by his side, Ryan bemoaned the unfairness of a system in which people who are generally healthy end up subsidizing the cost for people who need medical care. Why should healthy people shoulder some of the costs for sick people?)

WGN TV
— Protesters target local GOP after Health Care bill passes House – TOM NEGOVAN  (DIERSEN: Congressman Peter Roskam spoke at Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti’s outstanding fundraiser at Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton yesterday evening.  This WGN TV posting includes clips on protesters at the fundraiser and Roskam’s answers to reporters’ questions during a press conference that I attended as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor just before he spoke at the fundraiser. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes a) did not want me to know that Roskam was going to speak at the fundraiser or that Roskam would hold a press conference just before he spoke at the fundraiser. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes did not want me to attend the press conference. They almost succeeded in stopping me from attending the press conference, but outstandingly, Roskam granted my appeal and allowed me to attend the press conference. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes in Wheaton and elsewhere have always have done everything that they can to turn Roskam and other activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. against me. Should I write a book about my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes?)
http://wgntv.com/2017/05/04/protesters-target-local-gop-after-health-care-bill-passes-house/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois congressional delegation went right along party lines in the American Health Care bill vote. Every Chicago-area Democrat voted against the American Health Care Act. Every Republican voted for it. 6th District Congressman Peter Roskam returned from Washington this afternoon and has protesters gathered outside his office by evening. In a statement, Gov Bruce Rauner said, “The bill that passed in the U.S. House today continues to be of deep concern to our administration.” He’s concerned about the impact on Medicaid. Chicago’s mayor thinks backers of the AHCA need to worry about the senate. “I think the senate is going to look at this and say this is a non-starter and that it’s not going to happen,” he said. The bill, which passed with just one vote to spare after six weeks of work, is expected to be a much tougher sell in the senate.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— These two are the only local CEOs paid $20 million-plus last year – JOE CAHILL  (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those who rail against the compensation that government employees and government retirees get, but say nothing about the outrageous compensation that private sector employees get.  Ever-increasingly, those who rail against the compensation that government employees and government retirees get sound like they are being paid lots of money by private sector CEOs to do that.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170505/ISSUE10/170509888
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In general, CEOs at public companies around Chicago got smaller raises than counterparts elsewhere last year. A median pay hike of 3.6 percent trailed the 5.5 percent increase for CEOs at companies in the Russell 3000 Index. But don’t feel sorry for our CEOs—their 2016 median pay of $5.4 million was well above the $4.1 million median for the Russell 3000. Higher median pay reflects Chicago’s significant concentration of large companies with multiple business lines and worldwide operations, says John Roe, head of ISS Analytics. “There are some very large, very complex corporations there,” Roe says. “That tends to result in higher pay packages.”)

Roskam comes from an increasingly diverse district in the western suburbs of Chicago that has trended Democratic at the presidential level. He faced tough races in the past, though redistricting shifted his district into more safely Republican territory six years ago. “It’s time the people of Illinois’ 6th District hold Peter Roskam accountable for voting to make Americans pay more and get less for their health care,” Mazeski said in announcing her bid.)
