(FROM THE ARTICLE: As the federal government tightens asylum rules amid growing national tension over immigration, the Lake County Board this week unanimously voted to accept an expanded state grant to assist asylum-seekers. Lake County is the only county in Illinois to receive funding through the Supporting Municipalities for Asylum Seeker Services, or SMASS, program, which is now in its second year. The SMASS program focuses on funding services such as shelter and transitional housing support, food assistance, wraparound services, legal help and health and wellness care. The Metropolitan Mayors Caucus administers the program, distributing state money on behalf of the Illinois Department of Human Services. This year, Lake County officials secured a grant worth more than $1.13 million, an increase of about 9 percent from what they received last year. Mano a Mano Family Resource Center, which serves immigrant families, will receive $924,298 of that money, while North Suburban Legal Aid will get $184,404 to provide legal assistance to asylum-seekers. Lake County will retain $21,536 to cover administrative costs for managing the program. The North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic was founded in 2015 by Nancy Rotering, who is also a member of executive board the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus. Gov. J.B. Pritzker said the SMASS program was created in response to the policy of the Texas state government to provide people who show up at the southern border with free transportation to sanctuary cities. “As we continue to call for further federal support, and as Illinois takes a stand against the callous ways Texas Gov. Abbott is using human beings as political pawns, these grants will lend support where it is needed throughout the state,” Pritzker said, announcing the funding earlier this year. More than 49,000 asylum-seekers have arrived in Chicago on buses and planes since September 2022, not including those arriving independently or via Greyhound, according to city officials. In addition to the Lake County grant, several other municipalities and organizations across Illinois were awarded funding for the 2025 fiscal year through the SMASS program. Champaign received nearly $710,000, Oak Park was awarded about $300,000 and Ford Heights secured almost $1.24 million. As for non-governmental groups, BEDS Plus Inc. received $878,000, Centro de Informacíon was granted nearly $1.7 million, The Immigration Project was awarded more than $702,000, Respond Now received more than $706,000, Rincon Family Services secured over $1.4 million, Western Illinois Dreamers was granted nearly $375,000, and World Relief Quad Cities received more than $367,000 to support services for asylum-seekers and individuals experiencing homelessness. This local initiative comes during an election season in which President Joe Biden and candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris are facing increasing pressure over their administration’s handling of immigration and border security. Last month, Biden administration officials announced tougher asylum restrictions, requiring that the daily number of border crossings remain below 1,500 for nearly a month before easing restrictions on asylum applications. Ryan withdrew after that extremely big scandal came out and the Illinois Republican Party State Central Committee replaced Ryan with Alan Keyes. If Ryan’s extremely big scandal had come out before the primary election, Oberweis, Rauschenberger, or McKenna would have won and everything would have been different. Oberweis, Rauschenberger, or McKenna might have defeated Obama in the general election. By way of contrast, Blair Hull might very well have won the Democrat primary if Obama’s campaign had not disclosed a far less serious marital issue that Hull had. I was involved in the aforesaid because of my roles as the GOPUSA Illinois Editor, an Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, the TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois Vice Chairman, the Milton Township Republican Organization (MTRO) webmaster and a fundraising committee member, and an American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Democrats have been actively seeking to elevate abortion as a central voting issue to drive their base to the polls. One strategy has been to merge abortion with the debate over in vitro fertilization (IVF), effectively adopting it as part of their broader 2024 election strategy by pushing claims that Republicans are attempting to ban IVF. To this effort, Senate Democrats, spearheaded by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), pushed for a second vote on the so-called “Right to IVF Act” this week. “If Donald Trump and Republicans want to protect people’s right to access IVF, they can vote yes on it,” Duckworth told CBS News before the vote. “He’s shown that it only takes one sentence from him, and the Republican Party will fall in line behind him.” The bill failed to advance, and the media promptly pushed the expected narrative. “Senate Republicans blocked legislation that would protect access to IVF on Tuesday, in a vote that Democrats held to draw attention to the issue after former President Donald Trump’s recent statements supporting the fertility treatments,” CBS reported. “For the second time in four months, Senate Democrats forced a vote on the Right To IVF Act, only to be blocked by Republicans who called it unnecessary and politically motivated as Vice President Kamala Harris seeks to make access to in vitro fertilization a 2024 campaign issue,” read the lead at NBC News. This is a common election-year tactic that can be surprisingly effective if the media is on your side. Of course, the devil is always in the details, because the “Right to IVF Act,” is far more than what its name implies — as is the case with most legislation. “The ‘Right To IVF Act,’ introduced by Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., lumps several radical Democrat-led assisted reproductive technology (ART) bills into one to ensure the unlimited creation, indefinite freezing, and destruction of millions of embryos,” explains Jordan Boyd of The Federalist. Boyd goes into further detail. “Included in the self-proclaimed ‘sweeping’ bill are vague language and undefined terms that would force Americans with moral objections to ART to fund the manufacturing of motherless and fatherless children, commercial surrogacy, experimental transhumanist technologies like artificial wombs, ‘gene editing,’ and reproduction without women via in vitro gametogenesis,” he explains. “Additionally, the package would make a permanent path for taxpayer-funded ART like egg and sperm freezing, IVF, and surrogacy for millions of U.S. servicemembers and veterans.
