— Number of unauthorized immigrants in Illinois drops 10 percent, study shows – Marwa Eltagouri and Nereida Moreno  (DIERSEN: How many of these 450,000 illegals in Illinois will use their false identifications to vote for Clinton, for Duckworth, and for the other Democrats?)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-illinois-unauthorized-immigration-decline-met-20160920-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The number of unauthorized immigrants residing in Illinois dropped by 10 percent, or 50,000 people, between 2009 and 2014 — something experts say has been key to Chicago’s recent population loss. “So much of the population growth in this region was based on legal and undocumented immigration. This closes the plug on the growth we’ve had,” said Rob Paral, a Chicago-based demographer who advises nonprofits and community groups. “Undocumented immigrants were a substantial piece of the picture, and that era is behind us.” In 2014, about 450,000 unauthorized immigrants lived in Illinois, compared with about 500,000 in 2009, according to a study released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center. While most states saw no significant change in their unauthorized immigrant populations during the five-year period, Illinois is among seven states that saw their populations decline, primarily due to a drop in the number of unauthorized immigrants from Mexico. The population of unauthorized Mexican immigrants has declined nationwide as well because of the sluggish U.S. economic recovery and stricter border enforcement. But the country’s overall count of unauthorized immigrants remained stable through 2014 due to a spike in unauthorized immigrants from Asia, Central America and sub-Saharan Africa, according to the report, which bases its findings on data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— So much spent by so few to accomplish so little – Dan Mihalopoulos  (DIERSEN: What do you spend your money on?  What do you spend your time on?  What do you accomplish?  I spend my money and 10+ hours each and every day of what is left of my life putting out GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails free of charge and without any advertising. Those emails have gone out each and every morning since 2004, each and every evening since 2015, and they have included links to almost 245,400 articles and information on many upcoming events.)

— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Because Democrats and RINOs have succeeded in making the future look so bad for Republicans, Democrats and RINOs question why Republicans still have babies.  Assuring a better life for their children, for their grand children, for their great grand children, etc. is the main reason why Republicans get involved in government and in politics.  If my wife and I had children, I would be working a thousand times harder than I do to promote the Republican Party platform, the Illinois Republican Party platform, and the Milton Township Republican Central Committee Resolution against video gambling.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Reporter contract talks rev up at Tronc’s suburban papers – LYNNE MAREK  (DIERSEN: My worthless critics/opponents, their worthless operatives, and their worthless dupes have always a) shouted that I am worthless because no one pays me for what I do as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor and b) shouted that my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails are worthless because I send them free of charge and without any advertising. In my defense, not that I need to defend myself, unlike many if not most of my worthless critics/opponents, and unlike virtually all their worthless operatives and worthless dupes, I am financially secure.  I can afford to spend the thousands of dollars and thousands of hours each year necessary to put together and send out GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails.  He who pays the piper calls the tunes.  I do not want anyone to call my tunes.  I am fortunate enough that I do not have ask anyone for money.  As everyone including Rich Miller knows, GOPUSA ILLINOIS email subscriptions are worth at least $1,000/year.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20160920/NEWS06/160929982
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Sun-Times Media suburban reporters who began working out of cars and coffee shops in 2012 after their offices closed now have a chance to improve their lot at Tronc. They became part of Tronc in 2014 after its predecessor, Tribune Publishing, bought the suburban dailies and weeklies from the Sun-Times’ parent, Wrapports. Now, negotiations on a new contract for the 30 editorial employees represented by the Chicago News Guild are scheduled to start next week. It will be the first contract negotiated for the workers since they shifted from Chicago’s no. 2 newspaper operation to the city’s biggest. Tension is already building in advance of the expiration of the current contract at the end of the year. The union today posted a lengthy report of one Evanston Review reporter’s travails with management, and an unfair labor practice charge that was filed by the union last month with the National Labor Relations Board on his behalf. The union alleges the reporter was transferred from one suburban paper to another as retaliation for his complaining about a news story and exercising his contractual right to withhold his byline from the piece. “Within days of him asking to withhold his byline, he was transferred,” says Craig Rosenbaum, who is executive director of the union. Tronc spokeswoman Dana Meyer said it was not retaliation. “The company respects the collective agreement with Pioneer Press and has worked within the terms and conditions of that agreement,” she said in a statement. “There have been incidents where a reporter has asked to have their name removed and we consistently accommodate those requests. The agreement specifically identifies rules for transferring an employee and we adhere to these rules.”)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-ron-sandack-20160919-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The admission comes after weeks of Capitol speculation about Sandack’s departure after the former Downers Grove mayor abruptly stepped down from the Illinois House in July citing cybersecurity issues. As questions swirled, Rauner refused to comment on the situation. The governor stuck by that strategy Monday despite the new, widely reported revelations from Sandack and Downers Grove police. “I really can’t comment on that. I don’t know all the facts on that,” Rauner told reporters after talking up the state’s advances in technology. Rauner was a lot more glowing when discussing the recent departure of another ally, state Sen. Matt Murphy, who joined a public affairs firm.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Anti-Republicans ask “Is DuPage County over?”
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20160909/ISSUE10/160909852
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Behind the small story of a one-notch downgrade in DuPage County’s credit rating is a bigger story of demographic and economic change. The cut by Fitch Ratings, which put DuPage’s debt at AA+, down from AAA, marked the first time in decades that the county hasn’t held top honors from all three of its rating agencies. County officials were quick to pooh-pooh the decision, which won’t have much fiscal impact. “DuPage County’s finances haven’t changed,” Chief Financial Officer Paul Rafac says in a statement, noting that the downgrade reflects new ratings criteria that put more weight on a government entity’s ability to raise tax revenues unilaterally. As a nonhome-rule entity in Illinois, DuPage has little power to hike tax rates without approval from Springfield or voters. That hasn’t been a problem for DuPage until now. Tax revenues rose naturally for decades following World War II as middle-class migration from the city brought new residents with disposable incomes. Subdivisions sprouted in former cornfields. Shopping centers sprang up along county byways. Corporations joined the influx, carving out bucolic headquarters campuses like McDonald’s Oak Brook complex. As population grew, so did the tax base. Sales tax collections surged, easing pressure on residential property taxes, which DuPage County hasn’t raised in eight years. Driving the virtuous fiscal cycle was one essential force: growth. But DuPage County’s population rose less than 1 percent from 2012 to 2015, and relatively little open land for development remains. “It’s a different landscape than it was 20 years ago,” says John Carpenter, CEO of economic development agency Choose DuPage. Meanwhile, young workers are spurning suburbia in favor of city neighborhoods their grandparents fled. Some businesses are following; most notably for DuPage, McDonald’s is abandoning its circa 1988 headquarters for a new home in the West Loop. THE COMPANY YOU KEEP Another worrisome trend for DuPage, which relies on sales taxes for 54 percent of its general fund revenue, is the migration of shoppers away from brick-and-mortar retailers to online merchants. “While sales tax revenue has grown between 4 and 5 percent annually over the past several years, it has slowed to only 1 percent growth in (fiscal year) 2016, leading the county to change its growth assumptions going forward to only 2 percent growth,” Fitch writes in explaining its downgrade. Of course, DuPage is far from alone. Postwar suburbs around the country are facing the challenges that come with slowing growth. And no fiscal crisis looms for DuPage—its finances are in much better shape than Chicago’s and the state’s. But as any CEO can tell you, things get tight when revenue plateaus. County and local officials in DuPage will face harder choices as they try to maintain services, fund capital projects and hold the line on taxes. For DuPage, keeping the no-property-tax-hike streak intact will become more difficult with each passing year. In an interview, CFO Rafac says DuPage has avoided a property tax increase by controlling expenses as revenues flatten. “I believe we will be able to continue to do that,” he adds. New revenue sources would make the job easier. That’s one reason DuPage has such high hopes for the proposed western access point at O’Hare International Airport. County planners foresee a flowering of restaurants, hotels and other businesses if the project goes forward as planned. “Bensenville will look a lot like Rosemont does today,” Carpenter predicts. Given the uncertainty surrounding western access, DuPage homeowners should hope the county has a Plan B.)

WASHINGTON TIMES
— OUTSTANDING: Values voters stand up and speak out – Jennifer Harper
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/sep/8/donald-trump-mike-pence-to-appear-at-value-voters-/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It is a determined and significant event: The Values Voter Summit is now underway in the nation’s capital, drawing some 2,500 socially conservative activists with much on their minds. Some big names are part of it. Donald Trump and running mate Gov. Mike Pence will both appear — along with 70 other concerned, high-profile folk. They include everyone from actors Jon Voight and Kirk Cameron to Sens. Tim Scott, Tom Cotton and James Lankford. Other high-profile attendees include Allen West, Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, Oliver North, Bill Bennett, Laura Ingraham and Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle. Also on the list: Reps. Diane Black, Marsha Blackburn, Jim Bridenstine, John Fleming, Louie Gohmert, Jim Jordan, Gov. Mike Bevin, and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus. C-SPAN is covering the big doings. There’s a certain urgency in the air at the event, organized by the Family Research Council and now in its 11th year. And no wonder. This political landscape is a dynamic one. Some estimates now place the potential “evangelical voting bloc” at 60 million people, though media coverage often emphasizes how many of these voters sat out the last two elections for one reason or another. Values, however, continue to play a role. A new Washington Post poll of 72,000 registered voters in all 50 states found that 72 percent agree that “America today reflects their values less than it has in the past.” Gallup also found that 60 percent of Republican voters pine for a “conservative president, 32 percent favor a moderate and 6 percent a liberal. Almost a quarter of Democrats — 21 percent — preferred a conservative as well, 36 percent favor a liberal, 40 percent a moderate. Meanwhile, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins, whose group is the event’s principal driving force, will conduct a news conference Saturday to underscore the group’s mission and reveal plans for a “Values Bus Tour” which will visit 20 states by election day. The riders intend to mobilize local voters to support “bedrock values” like religious freedom, national security and the sanctity of life. And it is quite the ride. On the first leg of the journey, the bus will stop in all 100 counties in the state of North Carolina.)

http://dailycaller.com/2016/09/08/hillary-clinton-men-bullied-me-while-i-was-taking-the-lsat/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hillary Clinton said she was harassed by a group of men who feared being drafted while she was taking a law school admissions test. The Democratic presidential nominee relayed the story to Humans of New York — a blog featuring interviews done on the streets of New York — Wednesday. “I was taking a law school admissions test in a big classroom at Harvard,” Clinton said. “My friend and I were some of the only women in the room.” “I was feeling nervous. I was a senior in college. I wasn’t sure how well I’d do. And while we’re waiting for the exam to start, a group of men began to yell things like: ‘You don’t need to be here.’ And ‘There’s plenty else you can do.’ It turned into a real ‘pile on.’”  “One of them even said: ‘If you take my spot, I’ll get drafted, and I’ll go to Vietnam, and I’ll die.’ And they weren’t kidding around. It was intense. It got very personal. But I couldn’t respond. I couldn’t afford to get distracted because I didn’t want to mess up the test. So I just kept looking down, hoping that the proctor would walk in the room.” “I know that I can be perceived as aloof or cold or unemotional,” she added. “But I had to learn as a young woman to control my emotions. And that’s a hard path to walk.” “Because you need to protect yourself, you need to keep steady, but at the same time you don’t want to seem ‘walled off.’ And sometimes I think I come across more in the ‘walled off’ arena. And if I create that perception, then I take responsibility. I don’t view myself as cold or unemotional. And neither do my friends. And neither does my family. But if that sometimes is the perception I create, then I can’t blame people for thinking that.” When Clinton recalled the story to New York Magazine in May, she said “that level of visceral… fear, anxiety, insecurity plays a role” in how America regards ambitious women. “Unpacking this, understanding it, is for writers like you,” Clinton said at the time. “I’m just trying to cope with it. Deal with it. Live through it.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump claims that Hillary Clinton lacks “the strength or the stamina” to run the country. He questioned in a tweet this week why the media was not covering a coughing fit she had at a rally in Cleveland. His party’s chairman scolded her for not smiling enough. And Trump insisted that the former senator and secretary of state does not resemble a commander in chief: “I just don’t think she has a presidential look.” The escalating attacks by Trump and his allies on Clinton’s vigor and appearance are providing new fodder for critics who say the real estate developer is trafficking in sexist stereotypes and fueling false Internet rumors in attempts to undermine her image with voters. Many Republican strategists warn that the approach is perilous for a GOP nominee who already has low standing among women across the political spectrum, saying his jabs could resonate in a negative way for those who have encountered similar put-downs from men in their own lives. For women who “have had to put up with inappropriate suggestions about their appearance or stamina, it probably doesn’t sit really well when they come out of the mouth of a presidential candidate,” said GOP pollster Whit Ayres, who is not supporting Trump.)

The owners say they put it up for auction because they want to see what it’s worth. Open house events are planned for Sept. 25, Oct. 6 and Oct. 16. Auction participants must bring a bank or certified check for $90,000 to the auction. Auction officials say a reserve price hasn’t been disclosed but has been set.)

http://money.cnn.com/2016/09/07/media/donald-trump-press-blacklist-over/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump is ending a practice most journalists think he never should have started: his “blacklisting” of news outlets. Effective on Thursday, the Trump campaign says it will approve requests for press credentials from The Washington Post, BuzzFeed, Politico, and other news organizations that were previously blocked by Trump. A campaign spokeswoman confirmed the change on Wednesday. Trump provided a cheeky statement to CNN about the restoration of credentials: “I figure they can’t treat me any worse!” Leaders of some of the affected newsrooms were glad to hear of the change, but said it shouldn’t have been necessary at all. “Access to a major party’s presidential campaign events shouldn’t be a favor to be granted or withheld,” Politico editor Susan Glasser said. “It is important to remember that this was an absurd policy to begin with and a dangerous precedent for any campaign to have set,” Huffington Post senior politics editor Sam Stein said. Several Trump aides, including campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, had been lobbying behind the scenes for a loosening of the restrictions against the Post and other news organizations. Trump’s running mate Mike Pence said five weeks ago that he was looking into the issue. The so-called “blacklist” took hold last year, when the campaign denied press credential requests from The Huffington Post and the Des Moines Register. The Daily Beast, BuzzFeed and Politico’s credential requests were also rejected by the campaign. At various points Univision has also been blocked. Related: Here are the media outlets banned by Trump seemingly formalized the bans last June when he announced that he had revoked the Post’s credentials. In August he threatened to add The New York Times to the list, but did not follow through. In most cases, reporters from the offending outlets were still able to attend Trump rallies as members of the general public, but without the access and privileges that press credentials provide. Some journalists took it as a badge of honor. But the rejection of individual news outlets was troubling, some press freedom advocates said, because of possible chilling effects and precedents. Recognizing the media controversy, and perhaps relishing it, Trump said in June that if elected president, he would not ban news outlets from the White House press briefing room. Lately, the bans were getting harder to enforce. A new print “pool” covering Trump was established at the end of August, and it included several blacklisted outlets. The three print pool chairs — Time magazine’s Zeke Miller and The New York Times’s Maggie Haberman and Ashley Parker — argued that candidates shouldn’t be able to pick the members of the pool rotation, a source with knowledge of the matter said. Related: On Mexico trip, Trump leaves press stranded Separately, news outlets have also been pressing for greater access to Trump, citing the Clinton campaign’s decision to let some reporters travel on Clinton’s plane. Even with this week’s change, Trump is likely to continue attacking the media. His 15-month-long campaign has doubled as a campaign against the media. He routinely depicts news outlets and individual journalists as opponents.)

MONEY MAGAZINE
— Age Discrimination and Lost Income Are Hurting Older Workers – Reuters
http://time.com/money/4483741/age-discrimination-older-workers-retirement/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Age discrimination is illegal under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967. The law prohibits treating job applicants or employees who are over age 40 less favorably because of age. (The law applies to employers with 20 or more workers.) But most of the complaints filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission focus on age-bias terminations rather than hiring – simply because hiring discrimination is so difficult to prove. Yet two-thirds of older workers believe age discrimination occurs in the workplace, according to a 2013 survey by AARP. Older job seekers need much more time to find a job than older workers – 36 weeks in 2015, compared with 26 weeks for younger workers, SCEPA data shows. The evidence on discrimination A recent study by economists at the University of California at Irvine and Tulane University found strong evidence of age discrimination in hiring, particularly for older women. The researchers sent out 40,000 dummy job applications that included signals on the job-seekers’ ages, and then monitored the response rates. They measured callback rates for various occupations; workers age 49-51 applying for administrative positions had a callback rate 29 percent lower than younger workers, and it was 47 percent lower for workers over age 64. Other studies suggest that the long-term jobless rate for women over age 55 is several percentage points higher than it is for men. But older men are struggling too – especially white males with less education. This shows up in government numbers on job tenure, according to Teresa Ghilarducci, a labor economist and SCEPA’s director. From 2012 to 2014, median job tenure with a current employer for white males age 55 and older with less education (high school or less) decreased to 16.7 years from 17.7 years, while job tenure for all other groups rose. “The people who are losing the most are white, high school-educated men,” she said.)

— 10 Subtle Signs You’re About to Get Canned  Employers use some underhanded tactics to get rid of even the best workers. – Cliff Weathers (DIERSEN: To get rid of its employees who were White, male, older, and/or non-veteran, on October 1, 1993, when I was 45 years old and I had 25 years of federal service, GAO “offered” a $25,000 buyout and early retirement to all its employees who had 25 years or more of federal service. GAO ended its $25,000 buyout “offer” 1 year later and ended its early retirement “offer” 4 years later.)
http://www.alternet.org/labor/10-subtle-signs-youre-about-get-canned
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If the company’s goal is to rid itself of its long-term employees, it’s not stopping there. Buyouts are the first step in a larger workplace purge and unfailingly precede targeted firings. Even if company makes their buyout quota, any employee that meets its criteria remains a target for dismissal. So, if you qualify for a buyout that is offered by your company, you may want to consider taking it, according to financial adviser Roger Wohlner. It’s probably the best offer you’re going to get. “If your company has identified you as somebody who might be a good candidate for a buyout offer this generally means you are on their list,” writes Wohlner. “I’ve invariably seen folks who have turned down the first offer finding themselves out of a job within a year or so.”)

— Student loan lunacy  (DIERSEN: My Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that the courses that I took to earn a bachelor’s degree, three master’s degrees, and two professional certifications a) were not job-related, b) did not help me carry out my job duties, c) were taken by me to get a job in the private sector, and d) were a distraction.  They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a females, or a veteran.)
http://www.gopusa.com/student-loan-lunacy/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: College students whose majors don’t turn out as they envision will be able to walk away from their loan debt simply by claiming their schools bamboozled them, as allowed under a new rule. Proposed by the Department of Education, published in June in the Federal Register and scheduled for approval on Nov. 1, the rule will allow students to “discharge” their federal student loan obligation if they can show — and rather broadly — that they were hoodwinked by a university’s “misrepresentation.” This easy out would leave taxpayers and colleges on the hook for between $2 billion and $43 billion over the next 10 years, according to a federal estimate. And what could be easier than for the lame-duck administration, in its 11th-hour regulatory push, to ship off this sour tart and simply walk away? For starters, the rule is entirely unnecessary. An existing provision allows students to sue for loan forgiveness in cases of intentional fraud or in other violations of law. What’s proposed is preposterously unspecific, leaving schools with little recourse. It’s akin to allowing mortgage holders to dump their loans because they picked the wrong neighborhood in which to reside. In the end, this latest get-out-of-debt free nonsense helps no one. It simply abrogates personal responsibility. And unfortunately for young people sucked into these liberal escapades, life is not so forgiving.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: As members of the baby-boom generation continue to selfishly retire, waltzing off to engage in ridiculous activities like “enjoying life” and “relaxing,” the rest of us are left with the drudgery of work and, in many cases, a notable lack of institutional knowledge. According to the Pew Research Center, 10,000 baby boomers are reaching age 65 each day. While it’s been on the horizon for years, the reality of the boomer brain drain is still catching companies off guard, making “knowledge transfer” the buzzword du jour. Before veteran workers depart, it’s crucial they pass along not just a rough outline of how they do their jobs or a filing cabinet stuffed with old manuals and reports but some of the deeper knowledge gained from years of experience. It’s something Dorothy Leonard, a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School and co-founder of the consulting firm Leonard-Barton Group, calls “tacit knowledge.”)

http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2016-07-31/tom-kacich-hillary-made-news-even-when-she-was-22.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: By the time she was 22 years old Hillary Rodham had been elected student body president at Wellesley College, had given the first-ever student commencement speech at the Massachusetts college that is still exclusively for women, had been featured in an issue of Life magazine, had been accused on the front page of the Boston Globe of upstaging a U.S. senator and had been denounced in an editorial by her hometown newspaper, the Chicago Tribune. Even 900 miles away at the University of Illinois, Rodham was mentioned by Illinois Gov. Richard Ogilvie in a commencement address as representative of the student idealism of that time. All of that attention 47 or more years ago undoubtedly prepared Rodham — the future Hillary Clinton — for a lifetime in the public eye, including a historic run for president. The one-time “Goldwater Girl” from Park Ridge shed her conservative values while at Wellesley and within four years had moved 180 degrees politically, backing anti-war Democrat Sen. Eugene McCarthy for president in 1968. She became a student leader, ran for president of the student government and on May 31, 1969, gave the commencement speech that attracted so much attention. Ruth Adams, the president of Wellesley, introduced Rodham as “cheerful, good humored, good company and a good friend to all of us.” In her prepared remarks Rodham talked mostly of her classes’ time at Wellesley, of protests and demonstrations, and shared power and responsibility, and of the value of education.)

HERALD & REVIEW
— Legislators: Big pay for a part-time job – Editorial  (DIERSEN: Who hints/implies/argues/shouts that you are/were overpaid?  The following hint/imply/argue/shout that the federal government overpaid me: those who are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors. Many millions have not and will not seek a job with the federal government a) because the pay and benefits are terrible, b) because the advancement opportunities are terrible, c) because they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) because they cannot pass a background investigation, e) because they cannot pass a physical examination, f) because they cannot take the demonization, denigration, and condemnation that comes with being a federal employee or federal retiree, and/or g) because they are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and they know that the federal government discriminates against its employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Most folks would say that a salary of $100,000 for a full-time job is a pretty good gig. A six-figure salary for a part-time job is the stuff of fantasy. Except for the Illinois General Assembly, where the majority of members pull down more than $100,000 a year for what is a part-time job. For taxpayers, the news gets worse. When other costs such as pension, mileage, per diem payments and insurance are figured in, taxpayers pay about $32 million a year to the 177 legislators, according to a new report by the Illinois Policy Institute. Illinois legislators are the highest paid in the Midwest and fifth-highest in the nation. It should be noted that this group of 177 legislators have combined to turn Illinois into the worst-run state in the nation. Pay for performance isn’t part of the formula.)

NORTHERN PUBLIC RADIO
— Teen Delegate Carl Miller To Get Special RNC Birthday Gift – AMANDA VINICKY
http://northernpublicradio.org/post/teen-delegate-get-special-rnc-birthday-gift
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A high-school senior from Downers Grove already has a notable life experience to brag about when he starts applying to college: the 17-year-old is part of Illinois’ delegation to the Republican National Convention. Three generations of his family are in Cleveland for the RNC. Carl Miller is a senior at Timothy Christian, a private school in suburban Lemont. He’s into meteorology love the weather; I like to storm chase,” Carl says. According to his grandpa, who can’t help but brag, Carl is also on the academic scholastic team, got a high-scoring 34 on the ACT college entrance exam, and he’s number one in his class. Also, he’s a political junkie; or maybe “2016 presidential candidate groupie” is the better term for it. “We’ve traveled all over the Midwest to meet all the candidates,” says his grandfather, Arthur Siml. He’s exaggerating, slightly. To clarify: grandfather and grandson traveled all over the Midwest to meet all of the Republican candidates. It began, Arthur says, with Carl’s trip to the Iowa State Fair. “He came back, he was very excited because he met some of the politicians, including his least favorite: Hillary. And had a picture. I said: Carl if you really want to meet these people, we’ll have to do some research and some planning,” he said. And boy, did they. They got tickets for the GOP primary debate in Milwaukee from Ohio Gov. John Kasich, and for the debate in South Carolina from Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. “And then we traveled Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, and Illinois. And we’d just go to the things. But we didn’t want — we wanted to be sure to meet the candidates. So we’d make big signs, and we’d always meet them when they’d go to their car, so that you could meet them one-on-one when they’re alone waiting for their staff to catch up,” Arthur said. “And it was quite interesting because you don’t meet them when there’s a thousand people there. You do meet them when they isolate themselves back at their vehicle. And so we’d go to even $1000 a plate dinners, and we’d just wait. And the people were very kind – sometimes they’d put us in the reception line, even though we couldn’t afford it.”  Arthur says it’s been an adventure. “At my age – 75 – I’d watch it on TV, but the opportunity to do it with my grandson was just memorable,” he says. These two didn’t just travel to political rallies and fundraisers. They worked it. They’d schmooze with candidates’ drivers, who’d help with access, or show campaign staff a scrapbook of their election-year travels. Plus, they’d have big, bright flashing signs. At some point, Carl upped his involvement, and he signed on with the Republican candidate he liked most of all. “And so I joined the Ted Cruz campaign as a volunteer in three states: Iowa, Illinois, my home state, and Wisconsin. And I got an internship for the campaign in Indiana. And then I got on board with my township organization. So through the Downers Grove Township Republicans, I became a precinct committeeman,” Carl says. That’s how he became a candidate in his own right, for a spot as a delegate to the Republican National Convention. At the state convention in Peoria in May, Illinois Republicans voted to make Carl an alternate delegate. Alternates can go on the convention floor, so he was there and for the roll call when Illinois officially awarded its delegates, and helped to give Trump the nomination. Carl says that’s been his favorite, or most significant part anyway, of the experience so far. Here’s been in Cleveland all week with his dad Rob Miller, who is also a “strong, conservative Republican,” and with his grandpa, Arthur, who is also a Republican. Carl isn’t sure what the future has in store, beyond a desire to study law and political science. “I want to serve my country as best as I can, I want to advance the principles I believe in” he says. “I’m passionate about the constitution, about the rule of law. About the founding principles – the Judeau Christian values – that build this country.” Values like limited government. “James Madison put if perfectly in The Federalist Papers when he said: ‘If men were angels, no government would be necessary. And if angels governed men, then no restrictions on government would be necessary.’ But the constitution balances that idea by creating three, coequal branches of government, that check each other and balance each other so as to limit the power and preclude a tyranny from developing.” All of this from a kid who, at 17, is too young to actually cast a vote for President, for a very short while longer. Illinois has a law that lets 17 year-olds vote in the primary if they’re going to be 18 by the time the general election rolls around. Carl was able to take advantage of that  (and so he voted for Cruz in the primary):  he’ll ring in his 18th birthday on Friday, as his time as an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention is coming to a close. “And I couldn’t ask for a better birthday present,” he says. Carl says he’ll be casting a vote for Donald Trump.)

Scheduled to appear before the assembled delegates are Tony Iosco, who is a representative of the Trump campaign, and Ned Ryun, who founded a group called American Majority. The group bills itself as a nonpartisan group that trains grassroots activists and has been involved in the Tea Party movement. What remains to be seen is who will stick around to witness the speeches. Thursday’s theme is “make America one again.” Headlining speakers, according to the official convention program, include RNC Chairman Reince Priebus, Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump. Many of the elected officials who have been in Cleveland throughout the week have intimated they would not stick around for Thursday’s final day and hear Republican nominee Donald Trump formally give his acceptance speech.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The crowd grows thinner each morning as the Illinois delegation gathers for breakfast at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, the result of long days and even longer nights featuring parties and receptions with plenty of food and booze. The light crowd at Wednesday’s gathering to hear remarks from U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa of California did not go unnoticed by organizers, who the night before handed out Pedialyte to night owls as they returned to the delegation hotel. The drink is most commonly used to restore hydration, but also is used as a way to ease a hangover. “I am surprised how many people made it to breakfast. That’s good, there’s been a few late nights out here,” remarked U.S. Rep. John Shimkus of Illinois. Shimkus went on to highlight the various media appearances of Illinois delegates before offering a word of caution. “The nation knows that Illinois is in town, just make sure it’s for the right reasons,” he said jokingly. “We don’t want the chairman pulling anybody out of jail later on.”)

— Rep. David Harris marks 40 years since Reagan RNC fight – Mike Riopell
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160720/news/160729832/?utm_source=spec
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For state Rep. David Harris of Arlington Heights, the 2016 Republican National Convention marks 40 years since his first one. That 1976 convention was hotly contested, and Harris explained in March his role in helping wrangle delegates on behalf of Ronald Reagan, who eventually lost the nomination to Gerald Ford. Harris met his wife, Michelle, on that campaign, and she’s with him in Cleveland this week. How have conventions changed over the years? For one, a lot of Trump delegates are new to the political process, which could bring more GOP voters on board. “The convention is meant to bring the party faithful together and have them drink the Kool aid and get them fired up,” Harris said. “A couple of differences here are that, No. 1, a lot of those folks in the convention hall aren’t the party faithful,” he said. Plus, he thought the staging was more intimate, at least in the nights before Trump’s big speech. “The delegates were close to the podium, much closer than what I’ve seen,” Harris said. “You could literally walk up to the edge of the stage.” Harris, a former leader of the Illinois National Guard, was elected to go to the convention in the March primary as a delegate for Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Even though some delegates like him weren’t sent to vote for Trump, the roll call Tuesday to nominate Trump was drama-free because he had plenty of delegates to spare. “I don’t know how many more of these I’ll get to go to,” Harris said. “This is my sixth. It might be my last. It’s been quite a journey through the Republican years.”)

The agency is also looking at ways to offer incentives to get big construction companies to hire more minority-owned subcontractors.)

WTTW
— California U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa: Trump Probably Won’t Build Actual Wall – Paris Schutz
http://chicagotonight.wttw.com/2016/07/20/congressman-trump-probably-wont-build-actual-wall
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It is one of the cornerstones of Donald Trump’s campaign platform, and the issue that has inflamed passions on both sides: Trump has pledged repeatedly to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, and to have Mexico foot the estimated $5 to $10 billion to pay for it. But a high-ranking Republican congressman on Wednesday told the Illinois delegation that Trump’s promise amounts to little more than a metaphor for fixing the country’s broken immigration system. It doesn’t necessarily mean a physical wall will get built, he said. “Donald Trump speaks in shorthand too much,” said California U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa in a breakfast speech before Illinois delegates. “‘Build a wall’ is code for, ‘Let’s get our immigration system working so that, if you’re here legally, we work with you. If you’re illegally here, you don’t get a job.’” Illinois U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, who says he will vote for Trump but won’t necessarily support him, says the nominee has been unclear on the specifics of his policy as it relates to immigration reform and border control. And he says a physical wall across the entire border with Mexico isn’t a given. “This is up to Donald Trump to define these terms that he articulated in the campaign,” Roskam said. “We need control of the border. If it’s a physical manifestation, or high tech, or whatever it happens to be, that’s up to him to tell us.” But the Trump delegates in attendance weren’t buying the concept of wall as metaphor. “Trump says build a physical wall, I think that means he’s going to build a wall,” said delegate Maria Hough. “I think the congressman is sadly mistaken,” said delegate Stella Kozanecki, an 80-year-old first timer from downstate Mount Vernon. “It means build a wall.” Trump delegate Mark Fratella, an Evanston public school teacher who lives in Elmhurst, takes an all-of-the-above approach. “The ‘build a wall’ has two meanings: the physical meaning and just securing our borders, because we don’t know who’s coming into this country,” Fratella said. “We want a wall, but we want a door in that wall for legal, orderly immigration.”)

— GOP revokes delegate’s credentials for ‘racist’ FB post – Lynn Sweet
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/sweet-gop-revokes-delegate-credentials-racist-fb-post/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Illinois Republican Party on Wednesday revoked the convention credentials of a Donald Trump delegate from Chicago “for publicly-made racist comments and threats of violence” on a Facebook posting. Illinois Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider told the Sun-Times the party, “has zero tolerance for racism of any kind and threats of violence against anyone.”  The executive committee of the Illinois GOP party made the decision regarding Fifth Congressional District delegate Lori Gayne after party officials said she confirmed to them she was the author of the offending post, made under a different name. Gayne was elected a Trump delegate in the March Illinois primary from the North Side district. Gayne told the Sun-Times on Wednesday she wrote the post, after a reporter from the newspaper raised the matter with her on Tuesday evening, while she was with the Illinois delegation on the convention floor. The Republican National Convention welcome party was thrown Sunday at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Gayne wrote, over a photo of law enforcement officials on the roof on the iconic building on the Lake Erie shore: “Our brave snipers just waiting for some “N—- to try something. Love them.”  She used an abbreviation for the racial slur. Schneider said in a statement, as party chairman,  “I condemn in the strongest terms the racist comments and threats of violence made by Ms. Gayne, a member of our delegation to the Republican National Convention. Ms. Gayne brought the statements to the attention of Illinois Republican Party staff after being contacted by Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times,” Schneider said in statement. “Let me be unequivocally clear — racism and threats of violence have absolutely no place in the Illinois Republican Party or in a civil and inclusive society. “The Illinois Republican Party believes that inciting violence against anyone attending the RNC places state delegations, demonstrators exercising their First Amendment rights, and law enforcement personnel needlessly in harm’s way. Therefore, I have consulted with the Executive Committee of the Illinois Republican Party and have revoked Ms. Gayne’s credentials as a delegate to the Republican National Convention.” Gayne offered her “deepest apologies” in a statement, saying, “I strongly regret the offensive statements I recently made on social media. While I in no way intended to make racist or threatening statements, I now realize that they could be interpreted that way. “I have the deepest respect for members of law enforcement and know that they put their lives on the line every day. I made the offensive statements in my attempt to applaud their courage in the face of protests. But I now realize that my statements were ignorant and intolerant, and they cannot be justified. “The statements do not reflect my character or feelings toward minorities. As a Jewish woman, I know that racism of any kind is unjustifiable and hurtful, even when it’s not intended. I also know that violence is never the answer to political disagreements. I respect the decision of the Illinois Republican Party and understand their concerns about my safety and that of the entire Illinois delegation. Please accept my deepest apologies.”)

— Trump could seek new law to purge government of Obama appointees – EMILY FLITTER  (DIERSEN: Have you ever been purged?  While I worked for GAO 1980-1997 in its Chicago office, the Democrats who ran GAO routinely gave the managers of that office lists of employees in that office who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran that they were to purge.  Of course, needless-to-say, I was always on those purge lists.  They would have succeeded in purging me much soon than they did if I had not taken the following job-related actions: a) completed the requirements for a masters degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, b) passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, c) become a licensed CPA in 1982, Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, Certified Government Financial Manager in 1994, Certified Financial Services Auditor in 1996, and Forensic Accountant in 1997, and d) completed the requirements for a masters degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997.)
