While I was a Crete-Monee High School junior and senior 1964-1966, I washed dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the SS Kresge in Chicago Heights for 28 hours a week during the school years and for 40 hours a week during the summer of 1965. I got to/from my parents’ home in Crete and that job with a 1958 Chevrolet BelAir that I bought with money I had earned doing yard work and delivering newspapers. I used the money I earned washing dishes buy a new 1966 Pontiac Tempest Sprint ( https://over-drive-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/1965-12-CD-1966-Pontiac-Tempest-Sprint-Test-1-4.pdf ) in May of 1966 to use to commute to/from my parent’s home and UIC. Because of my dishwashing, my interaction with my classmates was very limited.

But my high school friend asked me to join him to take the postal employment test. Because I passed, I was a part-time postal employee while I attended UIC 1966-1968 and NIU in 1969. I graduated from NIU in 1970 and accepted the only job offer that I got, to be the Retail Sales Manager in a Firestone Store, a job that not really require a college degree. I accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile in 1971, but Oldsmobile withdrew that offer saying it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. My Firestone Store boss rudely fired me because I had accepted that offer. Because I had to have a job, I accepted a job offer that I got from IRS. I had taken and passed the Federal Service Entrance Examination while I was a NIU student. Potential employers saw me as being draft bait. They did not believe that my application for a financial hardship draft deferment to help support my mother and brother would be approved.

It’s at www.gopillinois.com, and, as you can tell by its address, it has a Republican flavor. That is an understatement reinforced with the comments added by the compiler himself — DAVID DIERSEN of Wheaton. He introduced a recent UPI story about Republicans’ views on the drought and wildfires by saying: “Democrats blame everything bad, including bad weather, on Republicans, especially on Republicans who are conservative, White, male, older, non-poor and non-veteran.” And talking of a New York Times article about a photographer arrested while on assignment in the Bronx, Diersen wrote that since 2000, he has been thrown out of, barred from, or not advised of news conferences “by Democrats, Democrat plants, RINOs (Republicans in name only), their operatives, and their dupes.” Thus, if you don’t want to read some very pointed comments, you may not want to go to gopillinois.com. But you would be missing a treasure of links to the day’s news and opinion. Diersen, 63, is a retired federal employee who became the Illinois editor of a national GOP website in 2000, and since 2004 has put out his own Illinois compilation every day. There’s usually about 50 articles daily, he says. He’s generally up by 3 a.m. He says he spends at least 10 hours a day on this passion of his, with no pay, and has put out links to more than 117,000 articles. As his comments above hinted, party regulars don’t always greet his work with relish. He includes dissident voices within the GOP tent, and some whose credibility is questionable. But he puts it all out there. He’s a GOP precinct committeeman, and he believes in people having information. He also wants to help elect Republican candidates who “will defend and advance the party’s platform.” The site makes available plenty of Diersen history, too, including how his “liberal Democrat superiors,” in his view, forced him to take early retirement at 49 from the U.S. General Accounting Office, “because of his opposition to race and gender based preference and his participation in a class action lawsuit” on that subject. He wouldn’t mind my telling you that he also passed his CPA and Certified Internal Auditor exams on first attempts more than three decades ago. Agree or disagree with him, but Diersen provides a bunch of interesting information — every day.)

— Hopefully, all the following Republican candidates on the ballot in my precinct will walk in today’s Wheaton Independence Day parade: Tracy, Bailey/Del Mar, Fioretti, Harris, Drew, Soloman, Oakley, Lewis, Vrankovich, Grasso, Noonan, Schiappa, Henry, Eckhoff, Michaud, Schultz, Quirk, and Helland. Since I became a Republican Precinct Committeeman in Wheaton in 1999, I have encouraged Republican candidates on ballots in my precinct to walk in the parades. In 2003, the day after all the announced Republican candidates for U.S. Senate (Cox, Kathuria, McKenna, Oberweis, and Ryan) walked in the parade, they all attended a picnic that I had organized in the Prairie Path Park in my precinct. More than 200 attended. U.S. Senate candidate Obama and his wife walked in the parade in 2004. In 2005, I started raising $2,500/year from Republican candidates, elected officials, and party leaders to help sponsor the parade and fireworks. Each year I would hand-deliver 500 parade flyers to the homes and businesses along the parade route. In 2007, I raised $2,000 on short notice for an elephant to walk behind Roskam in the parade. But my critics/opponents ended my fundraising in 2021 by having the Wheaton Park District stop parade and fireworks sponsorships. I should write about my critics/opponents. I would focus on those who continue to have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout in Wheaton. (FROM THE ARTICLE: In June 2025, the New Jersey Reparations Council released its 244-page report, “For Such a Time as This,” calling on the state to provide “repair” for a claimed $643,000 per-family racial wealth gap and endorsing sweeping reparations-related policies. Since then, several New Jersey reparations advocacy groups have again invoked Juneteenth to renew calls for lawmakers in Trenton to take up the Council’s recommendations. I will leave ethicists to debate the fairness of coercing one generation that committed no sin to compensate people against whom no sin was committed. Instead, I pose a simpler question: Who are the payors and payees? Reparations require neat racial bookkeeping at a time when America has become anything but neat. Since Loving v. Virginia in 1967, interracial and interethnic relationships have become commonplace. Roughly one-quarter of coupled Americans now have a partner of a different race or ethnicity, while millions of children have mixed-race parentage. As racial lines blur with each decade, advocates rarely explain who qualifies, who pays, and who collects. Does a half-white Patrick Mahomes pay… himself? The Council’s report declares that “all Black people in New Jersey are eligible for reparations,” while expressly declining to limit eligibility to descendants of enslaved people. Yet it never offers a workable definition of “Black” in a state where race and ethnicity overlap. Is eligibility based on ancestry percentage, self-identification, mixed-race status, ethnicity, appearance, family history, or length of residence? The report does not say. And who pays? The report simply demands that “New Jersey” pay hundreds of billions of dollars in reparations — $178,000 to each black person or $642,800 to each black family — without clearly explaining how such payments would be funded or where Hispanics, Indians, Asians, Middle Easterners, recent African immigrants, and other nonwhite residents fit into this racial accounting. That lack of clarity exposes the deeper problem: Morality aside, the sheer complexity, subjectivity, and administrative arbitrariness of reparations make them untenable on their face. Targeting New Jerseyans is especially strange. During the Civil War, New Jersey sent more than 88,000 citizens to fight for the Union, not the Confederacy. More than 6,000 died, many of them boys and young men. Adjusted for today’s population, that would be the equivalent of nearly 90,000 New Jerseyans dying — more than the state’s entire number of male high-school seniors. One would think a state that sacrificed the flower of its youth in the war that ended slavery had made a rather substantial atonement. Nor are today’s New Jerseyans even remotely the same population. Millions descend from families who arrived decades after Appomattox, often penniless and facing discrimination themselves. Indeed, one in four New Jersey residents today was not even born in the United States. It is hard to see how they bear moral or financial liability for a long-abolished institution. Reparations advocates such as Social Justice Matters, Inc, often emphasize that New Jersey once held “more than two-thirds of all enslaved black people in the North.” But two-thirds of what? Notice the move: percentages instead of raw numbers. “Two-thirds of all Northern slaves” sounds far more damning than 2,254 — the actual number still held in bondage in New Jersey in 1830, according to the census. I say “still” because that figure had fallen from roughly 12,422 in 1800, an 82% decline. Slavery remained technically legal, yes, but it was rapidly withering. By 1840, the number was down to 674. By Juneteenth 1865, the Garden State could count exactly 18 remaining elderly slaves. That puts New Jersey’s wartime sacrifice in perspective. For each of New Jersey’s remaining enslaved black people freed at war’s end, some 350 white New Jerseyans had died in the struggle that ended bondage. Was New Jersey guilty of participating in slavery? Absolutely. Did slavery create disadvantages that lingered for generations? No doubt. No one should deny either truth. But guilt is not a blank check, and history is not an accounting ledger that can be balanced two centuries later by sorting today’s residents into crude racial categories. If the Reparations Council wants to impose vast costs on New Jerseyans, it should at least answer the simplest questions first: Who qualifies? Who pays? How is liability assigned? What happens to mixed-race families? What about immigrants, recent arrivals, and descendants of Union soldiers? Until those questions are answered, New Jersey reparations remain less a serious policy proposal than a moral slogan in search of a workable system.)

Trump has fired nearly 20 IGs, and his administration last year put a hold on funding for the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency. Because I got within grade increases, in today’s dollars, a) my GAO salary increased from $118,984/year to $154,692/year 1986-1997, b) my IRS salary increased from $100,059/year to $113,402/year 1974-1980, and c) my Post Office salary increased from $19.57/hour to $20.87/hour 1966-1969.

— Park County Republican Party Sends Platform Loyalty Tests To GOP Candidates. Republican candidates for office in Park County received a letter warning them if they don’t commit to backing at least 80% of the state GOP platform, they won’t receive an endorsement or support from the party. “They is not a purity test,” it reads.
