November 1 Morning Edition

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— TROUBLE IN GOP GOV PRIMARY LAND It seems the Jeanne Ives-Rich Morthland team has to hit reset on its petitions after an address snafu on the original set. Ives just announced she plans to challenge Gov. Bruce Rauner in the Republican primary. From Facebook: “We have just discovered that the petitions that are circulating for Ives/Morthland are invalid due to a typo with Rich Morthland’s address. Please accept our apology for this mistake. The correct petitions are attached. I ask that you dispose of the previous petitions and replace them with the new ones. I am aware of the challenges it takes to gather the signatures and I am truly grateful for all of the hard work and dedication that has already been placed in the Jeanne Ives for Governor campaign.” It was signed Patrick Harlan.

— RAUNER AT 55% DISAPPROVAL — “America’s most and least popular governors,” by Morning Consult’s Cameron Easley: “Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner of Illinois, who continues to clash with Democrats in the Legislature over budget issues and has overseen a period of staff upheaval, is still sliding with voters ahead of his re-election bid next year. He experienced a net loss of 16 points, with 30 percent approving of his job performance and 55 percent disapproving.”

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always stressed that none of degrees (NIU, 1970, B.S. in Management; Loyola, 1976, MBA; DePaul, 1980, M.S. in accounting; and IIT, 1997, M.S. in financial markets and trading) are from Ivy League universities. — Fast-growing millionaires club – Mike Causey
https://federalnewsradio.com/mike-causey-federal-report/2017/10/fast-growing-millionaires-club/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Between early 2016 and mid-2017 (January to August), the number of mostly self-made government worker millionaires jumped from 3,272 to 16,475. Given the rising stock market, more people are moving into the seven-figure retirement club every month. In August, there were 46,088 people with account balances between $750,000 and $999,000. That was up from only 18,846 in January 2016. So how did they do it? The early TSP millionaires were all political appointees. Either elected (members of the House or Senate) or appointed to top jobs. Many were successful lawyers who were named federal judges. They brought their outside accounts with them and into the TSP, which is probably the least expensive and most closely monitored investment option on earth. According to some sources, one-time government employee Albert Einstein once said that compounding is the eighth wonder of the world. Or words to that effect. Or not. But even if he didn’t, and if he were alive today, he probably would have kind things to say about what happens when people invest over a long period of time, keep calm in good times and bad, and stay the course. In the case of federal investors, it helps immensely to take advantage of the 5 percent match Uncle Sam offers employees. As TSP investor Emily in Washington points out, for a TSP investor making $100,000 per year, that government match translates into a tax-deferred pay raise. And as salary goes up, so does the value of the match. Every now and then, we hear from a self-made TSP millionaire. While they come from all agencies, jobs and income levels, they all have a couple of things in common: They’ve been investing for a long time, an average of 28 years. They have all or most of their money in the C and S funds. When the market tanks (as it did in 1997 and 2008), they continue to buy the stock funds, getting more shares because they consider them on sale. More bang for the buck.)

October 30 Morning Edition

HERALD EXTRA
— OCTOBER 3, 2017 FLASHBACK: Your local newspaper: The real deal – JIM ZACHARY (DIERSEN: What do you say to activists, to candidates, to campaign managers, to elected officials, to party leaders, to major donors, and to political consultants in Illinois who state that they are conservative and/or Republican, but who fail/refuse to keep
diersen@aol.com on their press advisory and press release lists? I have served as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor since 2000. Since 2004, I have sent out GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails each and every morning, and since 2015, each and every evening too. Those emails have included links to almost 285,600 articles and information on many upcoming Republican events. What do you say to those who “punish” me by not sending me their press advisories and press releases a) because I refuse to serve as one or their operatives or dupes, b) because I refuse to carry out their backlist orders, c) because I have included links in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails to articles that they do not like, d) because I have failed/refused to give them money, e) because they blame me for their problems, for your problems, for my problems, and for everyone’s problems, f) because I am “too conservative,” g) because they want to curry favor with my competitors, Rich Miller, and/or the rest of the Democrat news media in Illinois, and/or h) because they focus on destroying individuals like me, organizations like TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois, companies, and governments that they cannot manipulate/dominate? They do not want me a) to know about or promote their public events and other public activities, b) to attend their events, and c) to report on their public events and other activities. They do not want anyone to first learn of anything by reading GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails. They want you to only know what they want you to know. They paint me as being illegitimate if not worse things a) because I sent out GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails free of charge, b) because the emails do not contain any advertising, c) because no one pays me for what I do as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor, d) because I do not have a college degree in journalism, and/or e) because I state that I am conservative and Republican. They proudly paint themselves as being anti-Diersen. They do not return my phone calls. They read my emails for “opposition research.” Should I publish a list of the aforesaid punishers? Some of them, if not many of them, talk and act like they want me to do that.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a world of fake news spread on social media and attacks on the media from people in power, it is important for the public to know the difference between legitimate reporting by credible sources and all the noise posing as “the media.” Here are some reasons your local newspaper is the most trustworthy source for news and information: — Newspaper newsrooms are staffed with real people — people you know — reporters, photographers, editors — gathering the news, conducting interviews, covering meetings, attending events, writing, editing, fact-checking and making sure every day you can trust what you read. — Newspapers rely on recognizable sources. Quotes in the articles you read are attributed to real people and can be easily verified. — Newspapers work hard to stay away from single source reporting, giving readers context and balance. — Newspaper websites have legitimate URLs ending in .com or .org extensions, listing contact information, the names of staff members and the media organization’s leadership team on the website. — Newspapers correct mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes at times, but there is a big difference between an error and intentionally and knowingly publishing a false report because of some political or social agenda. Spurious websites, blogs and social media do not correct errors. They thrive on them. In the United States newspapers have a long and important legacy of holding the powerful accountable, defending the First Amendment and advocating for government transparency. Democracy is protected when the newspaper provides checks and balances as the Fourth Estate of government from city hall to the courthouse to the statehouse to the White House. Newspapers are committed to the neighborhoods, cities, counties, states and coverage areas they serve. Straightforward news reporting and thought-provoking commentary give a voice to the voiceless and empower the powerless. Newspapers hold government accountable because at our very core we believe that government belongs to the governed and not to the governing. Don’t be embarrassed because you shared some sensational, agenda-driven report on social media only to find out it is totally fake. Get your news where real news has always been found: Your local newspaper, the real deal.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: On n Nov. 8, it’s anticipated that thousands of Americans in at least nine cities will take to the streets to “scream helplessly at the sky.” You can probably guess the reason: It’s to mark the one-year anniversary of the election of Donald Trump as president. Can you believe it’s almost been a year since the election? Time flies when everyone seems to be losing their minds! Here’s the good news: If you’re reading this, you’re still alive. The stock market seems downright giddy — knock on wood, at least for now — and despite our president’s occasionally baffling and sometimes alarming tweets, our country is apparently still free enough for people to get on Facebook and organize cross-country protests that involve shouting at clouds.)
— Make it worth their time Young professionals need to follow 3 rules to impress executives – Mary Rezek (DIERSEN: Non-veteran White males who are seeking a job with the federal government should be advised that with only rare exceptions, your career will be wasted and you will be gotten rid of if you do not make GS-13 (currently $94,610) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $111,801) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $131,508) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $161,900) by age 40. NBC5
— Rauner Likely to Draw Primary Opponent, Possible Third-Party Candidate as Right-Wing Backlash Heats Up – Mary Ann Ahern and Shelby Bremer
https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/politics/governor-rauner-conservative-challenger-452283453.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The movement to take down incumbent Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner from within his own party is gaining steam. A coalition of conservative, anti-abortion organizations met Saturday for the second time in as many weeks to discuss a “viable Republican primary candidate” against the first-term governor, according to Paul Caprio, director of the Family-Pac political action committee. While no formal decision was made, Caprio said the group of about 35 people planned to meet again in November “to further clarify the group’s position” and likely endorse a challenger to Rauner. “Historically, the way the pro-life, pro-family movement has operated relative to selecting and endorsing candidates for statewide office, we have always had a meeting of all of these different groups together,” Caprio said. The coalition met around this time three years ago, he continued, at which point there was a split, though not drastic, among its members in their support of a gubernatorial candidate. The group officially endorsed then-state Sen. Kirk Dillard, though some in attendance chose instead to back state Sen. Bill Brady. Rauner – the eventual nominee – was invited to the 2014 meeting despite his pro-abortion rights stance at the time, though he declined to attend or fill out a questionnaire to receive the organizations’ support and financial backing. While some of the organizations eventually ended up supporting Rauner in the race against the incumbent Democrat Pat Quinn, this time around, the coalition has made it clear that under no circumstances will Rauner receive their endorsement. During its initial meeting on Oct. 9, the coalition of 20 statewide organizations voted unanimously in favor of a “Bill of Particulars” outlining the groups’ stance on Rauner and in particular, his support of House Bill 40. Signed into law on Sept. 28, HB 40 allows the state of Illinois to cover abortions for its employees and Medicaid recipients, and protects access to abortion in Illinois should the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing it be overturned. Rauner publicly changed his stance on the issue multiple times, attempting to traverse the politically difficult decision without alienating either his GOP base or more moderate, particularly female voters ahead of his upcoming bid for re-election. However, his choice to ultimately sign the bill into law angered conservatives, who have quickly moved to organize against him. The coalition’s “Bill of Particulars” vows that the groups will not support Rauner in next year’s GOP primary or general election after he “shockingly, caved to pressure from radical abortion extremists and signed this dastardly legislation” and will only support candidates committed to repealing the law. This marks a major departure from 2014 in which some organizations offered Rauner their qualified endorsement in solely the general election. Now, conservative groups have not only disavowed Rauner, but are actively searching for a challenger. One potential candidate is state Rep. Jeanne Ives, of Wheaton. Ives said earlier this month that she was “exploring the option by having important conversations with folks around the state,” and while she hasn’t begun circulating nominating petitions, sources said that may change over the next week. Ives is looking into forming an exploratory committee, sources said, adding that she would likely run if she could raise $1 million. While Ives is among the candidates that the anti-abortion groups are considering, Caprio said there have been a few other names floated and the coalition hopes to make an official determination at its next meeting in November. Reflecting on this year’s “unusual set of circumstances,” Caprio said that there are typically three or four significant candidates in the race at the time the groups make their decision, but without any declared challengers – who would certainly face an uphill battle against an incumbent Republican governor with very deep pockets – the task of reaching a consensus has become that much more difficult. But the groups are united in their staunch opposition to Rauner’s re-election, so much so that Caprio foresees a situation in which conservatives might even “take two bites at the apple.” While the right-wing firebrand was not in attendance at Saturday’s meeting, former Congressman Joe Walsh is also considering throwing his hat in the ring for governor – but only as an Independent. In August, Walsh slammed Rauner, saying he was “done” should the governor sign a bill to effectively turn Illinois into a so-called “sanctuary state,” preventing law enforcement officials from detaining individuals based solely on their immigration status. And ever since Rauner signed that bill the following week, it appears as though Walsh – who did not immediately respond to request for comment – has been floating the idea of taking on the governor himself. “He feels like he’s going to focus his interest, in the issue of the defeat of Rauner, on the possibility of his own Independent candidacy,” Caprio said of Walsh, adding that the oft-incendiary radio host is “very interested” in running. But Walsh is leaning towards waiting until after the primary, Caprio said, to see if Rauner is able to emerge victorious even without a large swath of conservative support. If the billionaire governor succeeds, Walsh may at that point enter the race as an Independent – drawing both votes and perhaps even the backing of Republican organizations away from the GOP governor. “If Rauner and his millions are able to buy the election, if our candidate were not successful in the Republican primary, then I think there would be a very serious discussion of the possibility of an independent candidate,” Caprio said. But first, the organizations will gather once again in November at which point it’s “very likely that we will have a candidate,” he added.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Sunday that 14,020 people have applied to become Chicago Police officers. The Chicago Police Department will give an exam in December, the second one this year and the fourth in six years. The city plans to add nearly 1,000 officers by the end of 2018. The mayor said his proposed budget includes more than $27 million for increased police training to help departments reach hiring goals. In August, Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said the two-year hiring plan was moving on schedule, and that an April exam generated 8,700 qualified candidates. When announcing the upcoming exam, Johnson emphasized a need for greater diversity in the police force. “CPD should reflect the demographics of this city. If we’re gonna get there, we have to ensure that we have a viable pool of people to constantly pull from,” he said. The mayor’s office said the current “applicant pool reflects the diversity of the city.” Of the applicants, 35 percent are female and 76 percent identify as minorities. The exam is scheduled for Dec. 16 at McCormick Place.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20171021/news/310219960/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A man is in a dispute with a Roman Catholic diocese over his efforts to install a marker at his mother’s gravesite at a suburban Chicago cemetery that proclaims her support for victims of “rapist” priests. The Chicago Tribune reports that Jack Ruhl of Kalamazoo, Michigan, was informed by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet that it would not allow a marker at the grave of Marguerite Ridgeway at a cemetery the diocese owns in the suburban Wheaton that incudes what it calls “explicit language.” Ridgeway died in 2015. The attorney suggested in a letter that the marker could read that Ridgeway supported “victims of clergy sex abuse.” Ruhl says it is important to keep the words “priest rapist victims” because those are the people his mother supported.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Republicans, facing their first real contested primary in decades, have worked to distance themselves from the governor’s problems. The two other Republican candidates, State Senator Patrick O’Malley and Lt. Gov. Corinne Wood, accused Jim Ryan of knowing about the bribery scheme but refusing to use his power as attorney general to stop it. The attorney general maintains that it would have been irresponsible for him to get involved in a federal investigation. Recent polls have shown Jim Ryan with about 50 percent of the vote. . .Among the Republican candidates, Ms. Wood ran advertisements calling Mr. Ryan and Mr. O’Malley “too extreme” because they oppose abortion even in cases of rape and incest. Ms. Wood is also courting Democrats and liberal groups to cross over to the Republican primary and vote for her.)

NEWSWEEK
— THE WAGE GAP IS ONLY GETTING WORSE, ESPECIALLY FOR AMERICA’S SENIOR CITIZENS – CHRISTIANNA SILVA  (DIERSEN: If you are financially secure, what would your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes attribute that to?  My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would hint/imply/argue/shout that I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, that I have always been privileged, that I avoided the draft, that the federal government grossly overpaid me, that my wife and I gave up trying to have children, that we did not adopt, that we did not become foster parents, that my federal retirement benefits are much too generous, that I do not give lots of money to churches like they do, etc.)
http://www.newsweek.com/old-americans-suffer-one-worst-wage-gaps-world-688081
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Income inequality is rising and the wage gap is widening for American workers—and the problem is even worse for U.S. senior citizens, a new report shows. It’s so bad, in fact, that the income inequality numbers among the elderly in the U.S. resemble more a report out of a developing country than what would be expected of America. The gap between wealthy and poor seniors is one of the widest in any nation in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The only countries with wider gaps among seniors are Mexico and Chile, according to a study by the OECD and a CNN article. Past generations of retired Americans tended to see increased economic security, but with wages lower in comparison to inflation and fewer middle-class workers retiring with pensions, seniors now are not nearly as financially stable as in the past, according to CNN. Just 29 percent of Americans over 55 years old have a retirement savings account or a pension plan to lean on, a 2015 report from the Government Accountability Office showed. And it only gets worse as younger generations age, another OECD report shows.)

My federal health, dental, and vision health subsidy is $17,288, but I have to pay $5,763 to get that subsidy. My Social Security is $2,028.)
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-10-13/house-gop-s-tax-cut-hopes-ride-on-deciding-who-is-middle-class
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For some GOP members of Congress, a middle income household tops out at $100,000 a year. For others, a family making $400,000 still deserves a break. . .But even Republicans from the same state can’t agree on the definition. “The middle class is whatever you want it to be in many ways,” said Jim Renacci, an Ohio Republican who sits on the Ways and Means Committee. “I think the middle class, is anywhere from zero to $80,000 to $100,000. That’s really the target zone.” For Warren Davidson, who represents the Ohio district on the outskirts of Cincinnati where the biggest company is AK Steel Corp., middle class families could be those making up to $250,000 a year. “I think for our district, people probably don’t start feeling like they’re middle class until they start earning $40,000 a year, and they probably still feel like they’re middle class up until about a quarter million a year,” Davidson said in an interview. . .The Pew Research Center, for example, classifies the middle class as households making between two-thirds and double the median household income — or between $42,500 and $125,000 for a family of three in 2014. Other definitions consider whether people have a college degree or even their job type. . .A study by the nonpartisan Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center found that most middle-income families would enjoy after-tax gains under the GOP framework, but that taxes would go up for almost 30 percent of people making $50,000 to $150,000. The study said it used brackets outlined in the House GOP tax blueprint released in 2016 — a methodology that Brady and others criticized. . .Representative Peter King said families in his New Jersey district can make as much as $400,000 and still feel like part of the middle class. While he suggested that he’d be open to considering a compromise on state and local tax deductions, he rejected the idea of a cap that kicks in at an annual income of $200,000.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Defense Officer Personnel Management Act is one of the areas on which Spencer wants to focus. That act put into effect the military’s up or out system, which forces service members to promote to the next rank in a certain amount of time or be separated from the military. “If, in fact, we have excellent people in excellent positions, why shouldn’t we find a way to keep that gray matter, that institutional knowledge, that high performing person facing off against that issue and not be penalized that he or she is lost in his class on promotion?” Spencer said.  Letting sailors stay in a particular rank could let them keep doing what they actually love instead of forcing them into a leadership position. In some cases, pilots who want to only fly or sailors who like certain positions on a ship are forced to take on more responsibility as leaders instead of doing the task they joined the Navy to do.)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— SHOULD RAUNER LEAVE THE GOP LIKE KASICH IS CONSIDERING DOING?
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/10/should-rauner-leave-the-gop-like-kasich-is-considering-doing-.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Over the weekend, Ohio Governor John Kasich told a CNN reporter he’s thinking about leaving the Republican Party – if it can’t be fixed. “If the party can’t be fixed, Jake, then I’m not going to be able to support the party,” Kasich told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “Period. That’s the end of it.” Maybe Governor Rauner should follow Governor Kasich’s political lead. After all, the Governor has ignored the IL GOP 2016 Platform, which was overwhelmingly endorsed by the party faithful. Governor Kasich and Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner are close kins politically. They each tend to be left of center on most issues, and both Kasich and Rauner have listened attentively to the same political consultants over the years. Rauner’s one-time chief communicator Mike Schrimpf moved to Kasich’s presidential bid campaign in February 2016 to join his twin brother Chris, who traveled with Governor Kasich during the campaign. Several of Governor Rauner’s closest political allies endorsed Kasich and ran as his convention delegates in 2016, although Governor Kasich never threatened the GOP primary leader and ultimate winner Donald Trump. Governor Rauner has yet to publicly approve of anything President Trump has done as president. If the Governor wants to run for re-election in 2018, the best fit would be for him to run as an Independent with those that agree with his politics and his tactics.)

— Black Conservatives List The Issues Football Players Should Actually Be Protesting Against – Amber Randall
http://dailycaller.com/2017/10/01/black-conservatives-list-the-issues-football-players-should-actually-be-protesting-against/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “If they really want to protest something in the black community, they need to protest black on black crime. They need to protest the lack of education within their community. They need to protest single moms who are stuck on welfare for generations and keep having kids,” Villa told TheDCNF. “They need to protest that they can be sitting watching TV in their homes and stray bullets from gang violence can come into their home and murder them.” Okafor also agreed that football players should be addressing issues like poverty in the black community and poor schools that don’t teach students the necessary skills to thrive in college or in the workforce. “I think there are issues when it comes to the black community, like criminal justice reform. I’m a huge proponent of that. I think that it comes down to over-regulation and government,” Okafor said to TheDCNF, noting that groups like Black Lives Matter advocate for reform but tout people who call for more government. “The protests should be focused on that there is more poverty in the African American community, that a bigger percentage of us are in poverty. I’m living in Baltimore, and I see it everyday. Our schools are failing, and they don’t even know that they’re failing.” Harris argued that football players need to lead by example and demonstrate to young black males what character and being a good father looks like. Harris, while he disagrees with Stephen Curry refusing to visit the White House, touted Curry as an example of a black man children could look up to. “Leading by example. Unfortunately, athletes and entertainers are the most visible examples that there are in the black community. The reality is that less than a third of black children are growing up in a household with a mother and a father,” Harris told TheDCNF. “If they are truly concerned with the black community as they say they are, then they should start leading by example. If more NFL, NBA athletes conducted themselves like Steph Curry, how different would things be?”)

http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20170928/lester-immigrant-rights-event-canceled-after-threats-to-arlington-heights-library
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Arlington Heights Memorial Library canceled an immigrants rights workshop this week out of “concerns for safety” after the library’s voice mail and board president Deb Smart’s home phone were flooded with calls from people objecting to the meeting. “It was an unsettling process,” Smart says. “People called the switchboard, saying they’d call (federal immigration officials) and have a raid done.” She says she was called names and threatened, and ultimately involved local police. The free workshop was sponsored by the Community Activism Law Alliance and was advertised as informing immigrants on what to do and say when in contact with immigration and police officers and how to prepare “emergency kits” if they’re at risk for detention. Smart said a similar workshop might be held in the future at a different location. The library’s official statement, posted on its website, says “the decision to cancel the workshop was based on concerns for the safety and welfare of workshop attendees, library staff and library users.”)

— Rauner: Protesting NFL players are ‘disrespecting the foundations of our country’ – AVERY ANAPOL
http://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/352237-illinois-governor-protesting-nfl-players-are-disrespecting-the
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois governor Bruce Rauner said that NFL players protesting the National Anthem are “disrespecting” the flag, country, and anthem. The governor weighed in on the controversy to Politico after Sunday’s NFL game at Chicago’s Soldier Field. The entirety of the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers stayed in the locker room during the National Anthem, except for one player. “To me they are disrespecting the foundations of our country, the veterans who risked their lives for our democracy, and the men and women who fight every day and make the ultimate sacrifice to defend our liberties,” Rauner said through a spokesman. Rauner has a financial stake in the Steelers, according to Politico. The Republican governor said he did not condone the Steelers’ behavior, but that the First Amendment guarantees the right of players to “choose to be disrespectful.” “Our country is great because it guarantees freedom of expression,” Rauner said. President Trump has heavily criticized players for kneeling during the anthem to protest racial inequality. At an Alabama Senate campaign rally on Friday night, he called for NFL owners to fire athletes who protest the National Anthem, prompting several instances of players kneeling or staying in locker rooms during the anthem across the nation this weekend. The Chicago Bears stayed on the field during the anthem, linking arms in a display of unity while remaining standing. A team statement from the Bears said that the “divisive political situation” that the protests have brought on have unified the NFL by prompting dialogue between  “The Chicago Bears are proud to support our players, coaches and all members of our organization to bring peace and unity together through football,” the statement reads. “What makes this the greatest country in the world are the liberties it was founded upon and the freedom to express oneself in a respectful and peaceful manner.”)

West Suburban Patriot’s members are very engaged in the political process and look forward to opportunities to meet representatives and hear about current legislative issues. Due to the structure and purpose of our meetings, we can’t provide them a platform to address the group for an entire meeting (unless we are holding a candidate forum), but we will certainly announce that they are in attendance, give them a few minutes to address the group, and encourage members to take time to introduce themselves and connect one-on-one. We ask elected officials to be conscious of the fact that we are a non-partisan group and to respect all of our members by not acting in an overtly partisan manner. We realize that getting our nation back on the right track will take the active participation of every citizen we can possibly draw in to our movement. http://www.kansas.com/news/politics-government/article175175316.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sen. Thom Tillis will introduce his “conservative Dream Act” on Monday that would provide a pathway to citizenship for as many as 2.5 million young undocumented immigrants, but one that is long and involves “extreme vetting.” The North Carolina Republican and cosponsor James Lankford, an Oklahoma Republican, will pitch the plan as “merit-based” relief that must be earned — and, critically, not “amnesty,” according to Republican talking points obtained by McClatchy. But unlike other merit-based immigration proposals that limit new immigrants from entering the country based on their job skills, this proposal would limit who can remain in the country based on their years of American education, work experience or military service. “Choosing between either mass deportation of Dreamers or blanket amnesty is a false choice,” the lawmakers argue, according to the talking points. “There is a third option: an organized process by which talented and hard-working young Americans can earn legal status.” All applicants will have to pass a medical examination and be “extreme vetted.” The vetting will include three separate rounds of security and background checks to ensure they have no criminal history and pose no national security threat. The first check would happen when the immigrant enters the program followed by a second check after five years. The third check comes after 15 years, if and when the immigrant applies to become a citizen.)
