INSIDE HIGHER EDUCATION
— Christian College Faculty Aren’t Lining Up for Trump Reflecting new polling that indicates college-educated white evangelicals are moving away from supporting Trump, many on Christian campuses are struggling to back him. – Kery Murakami (DIERSEN: The Democrat Party platform is extremely anti-Christian. If you vote for Democrats, you shout that you are anti-Christian.)
https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2020/10/16/christian-professors-try-reconcile-abortion-views-disdain-trump
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Wheaton College — a Christian college in Illinois, which is described as sort as the Harvard of evangelical colleges — appears to be a place where Barrett’s nomination should be causing many to embrace Trump. The university requires students and faculty each year to reaffirm a statement of faith, based on a biblical doctrine consonant with evangelical Christianity. Students and faculty are also expected to affirm that they agree with a community covenant, which, among other things, condemns “the taking of innocent life.” David Iglesias, an associate professor of politics and law at Wheaton and director of the college’s Center for Faith, Politics and Economics, was clearly struggling whether his faith would allow him to vote for Trump. “In my faith, everything is subservient to Scripture,” he said and brought up the biblical account of David’s adultery with Queen Bathsheba. “The prophet did not give him a pass,” he said. “The Scripture is pretty clear that when our leaders do the wrong thing, we shouldn’t excuse them. Character counts. What you do matters.” And, he said, “we know our Scripture here.” Just in the past few months, he said, Trump has “failed to criticize the Proud Boys. What did he say? ‘Stand by’?” “His behavior during the debate — he wouldn’t let Joe Biden speak. I’ve never seen a worse debate. It was pathetic. He’s said disparaging things about Muslim Americans,” Iglesias said. “And there’s his recent treatment of veterans,” he said referring to a report in The Atlantic in September that Trump privately referred to service members killed in combat as “suckers” and “losers.” (Trump denied insulting veterans.) Iglesias served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years. On Christian campuses, “there’s going to be some soul searching in supporting someone you disagree with on 90 percent of the issues,” he said. “But who agrees with you on the one you that you hold dear, and that’s right to life.”)

— More Than Half A Million Illinoisans Have Already Voted Early – HANNAH MEISEL (DIERSEN: So far, in my precinct, the following have already voted: 27 (17%) of the 158 Republicans, 3 (33%) of the 9 swing voters, 16 (9%) of the 186 Independents, and 51 (37%) of the 139 Democrats. It would be great if the Milton Township Republican Organization provided its Precinct Committeemen with an updated version of its outstanding Voter Guide that lists the newspaper endorsements that the candidates have received and other new information. I would immediately deliver that guide to all the homes in my precinct that have at least one Republican, swing, or Independent voter who has not yet voted.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Illinois means little to President Donald Trump by way of electoral votes, but the state still has some eager Republican donors. Donald Trump Jr. and his girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, the Trump campaign’s national finance chair, made a stop at Bull Valley Golf Club in Woodstock, Tuesday afternoon. The club is about 60 miles northwest of Chicago and has been a go-to spot for Republican fundraisers. Entry to this exclusive fundraiser was pricey, ranging from a $1,000 ticket for a single, no-frills ticket to $100,000 per couple for co-chair status (and lots of access), plus some price points in between. The event was hosted by Gary Rabine, owner of a Schaumburg-based paving and concrete company. Trump and Guilfoyle then headed to downtown Chicago for another schmoozy gathering with Trump Finance Chair and Cubs co-owner Todd Ricketts and philanthropist and political fundraiser Eleni Bousis (she and her husband, grocery chain owner Jim Bousis, were big supporters of former Gov. Bruce Rauner). Others rubbing elbows with Trump Jr.: Illinois Republican Committeeman Richard Porter, former Blackhawks player Jeremy Roenick, and Eloise Gerson, president of the 42nd Ward Republican Organization. Adding it all up: The Trump surrogate swing through Illinois was pulled together in just a few days and raised about $450,000. – Shia Kapos

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Thomas, a staunch conservative, referred to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996, which says “no provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.” Social media companies—like Facebook and Twitter—rely on this statute to remain protected from lawsuits resulting from offensive or inappropriate content that may be published by users. “Paring back the sweeping immunity courts have read into §230 would not necessarily render defendants liable for online misconduct. It simply would give plaintiffs a chance to raise their claims in the first place. Plaintiffs still must prove the merits of their cases, and some claims will undoubtedly fail. Moreover, States and the Federal Government are free to update their liability laws to make them more appropriate for an Internet-driven society,” Thomas wrote.)

I would focus on those who would not have taken adverse actions against me if I had shared their national origin and/or religion.)
https://theconversation.com/will-german-americans-again-put-donald-trump-over-the-top-in-the-presidential-election-146283

(FROM THE ARTICLE: German Americans paved Donald Trump’s road into the White House in 2016 through Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. This ethnic group barely receives attention in American media and politics. The Midwest, home to many German Americans, is a battleground for the 2020 presidential election. Will this inconspicuous group yet again cast the deciding votes in the upcoming election? The German American experience Forty-four million Americans claim German ancestry. They constitute a large white heritage group in the United States, and the largest by far in the Midwest. Between 1850 and 1890, Germans arrived in the millions to settle in the U.S. German American farmers and workers transformed the frontier wilderness into farmland and fueled the Midwestern region’s industrialization with manpower and entrepreneurial spirit. Politically, they were never a unified voting bloc. Many were freethinkers, fighting against slavery and for women’s suffrage. They founded newspapers and led labor movements. Others were leading Evangelicals, forming the Missouri Synod, one of the most conservative religious bodies of the country. For decades, political parties vied for the vote of this heterogeneous immigrant group. Things changed in the wake of two world wars. To avoid stigmatization, German Americans stopped speaking German, anglicized their German names and became outwardly more American than any other European immigrant group. As a result, most contemporary German Americans have lost an authentic connection to their cultural heritage. Unlike other ethnic groups, they do not collectively link their identity to political action. Yet, despite this low level of community organization and activism, German Americans show common voting patterns. ‘Ghost pain of the past’ Today’s German Americans are more conservative than their ancestors. Most counties of heavy German American heritage are rural and vote Republican. We conducted a post-election analysis of this group’s behavior in the 2016 election. After we looked at occupational distributions, we suggested in 2016 that the steady economic decline in agriculture and domestic manufacturing in the Midwest made German Americans receptive to populist messages with racist overtones, a view implied by other political scientists and sociologists. A new, empirical study suggests that German Americans’ support of Trump in 2016 was not a simple outcome of party affiliation and not primarily an articulation of racism. Rather, German Americans were enticed by Trump’s isolationist agenda, an ideological preference their communities had developed long before 2016. In fact, presidential candidates with policies of protectionism and anti-interventionism have consistently benefited from the German American vote. For example, in the 1992 race, third-party candidate Ross Perot opposed NAFTA and the first Gulf War. He shared many views on trade and foreign policy with Donald Trump and performed better among German Americans than among any other descendants of 19th-century immigrants. Interestingly, the tendency to support anti-interventionist presidential candidates even extended to Democrat Barack Obama. More successful than any Democrat in presidential elections in decades among German American voters, Obama put forth a prospective foreign policy agenda that contrasted sharply with that of John McCain, who stood for the continuation of George W. Bush’s unpopular wars in the Middle East. German American support for America’s first African American president reached close to 60% in many counties of America’s heartland, making it very unlikely that racism was the primary force behind the swing toward Trump in 2016 in these counties. Rather, this phenomenon shows a consistent attraction to isolationist candidates in these communities rooted in the first half of the 20th century. That’s when German Americans vehemently opposed U.S. military intervention in Europe while being forced to rapidly assimilate. But can past traumas influence voting behavior 80 years later? Research on the persistence of historical legacies such as the voting behavior in former slaveholding counties in the South shows that political attitudes indeed can be passed down over generations even while the experiential link to their origin is lost. It appears that German American attraction to isolationism is a ghost pain of the past. What will happen in November? Trump has been an isolationist president. He abolished NAFTA, withdrew from the Paris Agreement on climate change, pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal, started trade wars, snubbed military leaders and announced troop withdrawals from NATO allies. These decisions will increase his popularity among many voters who favor isolationist candidates, including German Americans. Nevertheless, we believe that Trump’s campaign faces a problem in attracting a similarly large number of German Americans voters this November. Expectations that isolationist policies would lead to greater prosperity in the Midwest were disappointed. Moreover, throughout Trump’s presidency, his record as an isolationist was overshadowed by his image as a racist. We believe that many of those German American swing voters, who voted for a noninterventionist Obama in 2008 and then were attracted by Trump’s isolationist agenda in 2016, are alienated by his incendiary response to police killings and the Black Lives Matter protests. A central tenet of isolationism is a strong desire to stay out of trouble through noninvolvement. This applies all the more at home. A growing understanding that the president’s actions did not deescalate but instead amplified violence and chaos on American streets will likely keep many German Americans from voting for Trump a second time.)

TOWNHALL
— Big Tech Censorship is Finally Now Coming After the Rest of Us Conservatives – Rachel Alexander (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents side with Big Tech.)
https://townhall.com/columnists/rachelalexander/2020/10/12/big-tech-censorship-is-finally-now-coming-after-the-rest-of-us-conservatives-n2577864
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Many of us thought “that could never happen to me” when rowdy right-wingers like Laura Loomer and Gavin McInnes were banned from social media. We are careful and polite about what we post. Surely Big Tech sees how reasonable we are and would never come after us too. Not so anymore. Big Tech is now starting to label regular conservative viewpoints as false and using that as justification to censor and even permanently ban us. They are threatening to ban conservatives for posting things that left-leaning fact checkers say have a very remote possibility of not being true. . .Do you see where this is leading? If you say “capitalism leads to prosperity,” that could be “fact-checked” as false because you can always point to poor people. If you say “Christianity saves lives” that could be “fact-checked” as false because some Christians were martyred for their faith. . .Rep. Jim Jordan and other congressional conservatives issued a report this month on Big Tech censorship, focusing on Facebook, Google, Apple, Amazon and Twitter. The report stated, “Big Tech is out to get conservatives. Time and again, Big Tech uses its power to suppress and marginalize conservative voices.” Google was caught blacklisting some of the top conservative media sites in July, noticeably shortly before the election. Notice we’re no longer talking about Infowars and fringe sites. These are the top conservative sites in the country, including Townhall, Breitbart, The Daily Wire and Judicial Watch. . .Jordan and Rep. Matt Gaetz were shadow-banned by Twitter in 2018, but not a single member of the 78-person Progressive Caucus was shadow-banned. RNC chair Ronna McDaniel was shadow-banned, but not the DNC chair. The report lists many incidents of censorship of prominent, regular conservatives, including President Trump. On the other hand, conduct threatening violence on the extreme left is often given a free pass. Tweets by the Ayatollah Khamenei are allowed stating that Iran will reciprocate against the U.S. for the death of Hajj Qasem Soleimani and that Israel will be uprooted and destroyed. . .Many conservatives will still blow this off, saying it’s not censorship because private companies are involved, and we just need to come up with our own competing alternatives. This may be true, but it’s not solving the problem. No platforms fair to conservatives have come anywhere near the competitiveness of the top Big Tech companies. Parler, which President Trump recommended as a social media alternative, has only 2.8 million users. Whereas Facebook has over 2.7 billion users, Instagram has 1 billion and Twitter has 48.35 million. So conservatives are being increasingly shut out of the modern-day version of the public square. . .Something has to change. The left already controls so much of society — education, most of the legal system, traditional media, Hollywood — that the addition of Big Tech will ensure that conservatives never win another election again. It’s just not clear to many of us what is the best way to fight back.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Terry Hunt, 68, of Big Rock, is looking to continue in the position of county auditor, a job he has held since 2012. Looking at the county, Hunt says concerns include the pandemic and its impact, and concerns about taxes. “COVID has been front and center of everything and is on everyone’s list at this point,” Hunt said. “It impacts people’s lives on so many levels from personal health to the ability to buy food and work. It has overshadowed typical things like taxes.” Property taxes are still an issue, Hunt insists, “as everyone is aware of what they owe” as well as their obligation to pay. If re-elected, Hunt said he wants to continue to “increase financial transparency” as well as “audit each operation in an objective and fair way.” “The auditor’s function is that he’s the only elected official authorized to audit each county operation and it’s a responsibility to the people that elected us as opposed to someone that’s appointed,” he said. Hunt also wants to continue to work with the other team members “to balance the budget” and said he will continue to work on ad hoc committees and other tasks “that go beyond the office” and above “the lowest threshold” of just doing the auditor’s job.)

https://www.lexology.com/library/detail.aspx?g=97f3cf73-8b88-4164-bf29-a43deaca47cc

(FROM THE ARTICLE: More often than not, these laws protect workers from adverse actions because of their political activities outside instead of inside the workplace. For example, with limited exceptions, Colorado law prohibits employers from firing someone because of their lawful off-duty activities, including engaging in political speech, and it also prohibits employers from making any rule prohibiting employees from engaging or participating in politics or running for office. New York law protects employees engaging in certain “political activities” outside the workplace during off hours, but it contains an exception where the employee’s activities would create a “material conflict of interest related to the employer’s trade secrets, proprietary information or other proprietary or business interest.” And Connecticut law prohibits employers from taking adverse action against employees who speak about matters of public concern unless that speech substantially interferes with an employee’s job or working relationship with the employer.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is questioning President Donald Trump’s fitness to serve, announcing legislation Thursday that would create a commission to allow Congress to intervene under the 25th Amendment to the Constitution and remove the president from executive duties. Just weeks before the Nov. 3 election, Pelosi said Trump needs to disclose more about his health after his COVID-19 diagnosis. She noted Trump’s “strange tweet” halting talks on a new coronavirus aid package – he subsequently tried to reverse course – and said Americans need to know when, exactly, he first contracted COVID as others in the White House became infected. On Friday, she plans to roll out the legislation that would launch the commission for review. “The public needs to know the health condition of the president,” Pelosi said, later invoking the 25th Amendment, which allows a president’s cabinet or Congress to intervene when a president is unable to conduct the duties of the office. Trump responded swiftly via Twitter. “Crazy Nancy is the one who should be under observation. They don’t call her Crazy for nothing!” the president said. The president’s opponents have discussed invoking the 25th Amendment for some time, but are raising it now, so close to Election Day, as the campaigns are fast turning into a referendum on Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. More than 210,000 Americans have died and millions more infected by the virus that shows no signs of abating heading into what public health experts warn will be a difficult flu season and winter. Trump says he “feels great” after being hospitalized and is back at work in the White House. But his doctors have given mixed signals about his diagnosis and treatment. Trump plans to resume campaigning soon. Congress is not in legislative session, and so any serious consideration of the measure, let alone votes in the House or Senate, is unlikely. But the bill serves as a political tool to stoke questions about Trump’s health as his own White House is hit by an outbreak infecting top aides, staff and visitors, including senators. In a stunning admission, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Thursday that he had stopped going to the White House two months ago because he disagreed with its coronavirus protocols.
