ILLINOIS REVIEW
— 3 QUESTIONS FOR THE IL GOP ABOUT WHO GETS WHAT FUNDS AND WHO DECIDES
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/12/3-questions-for-the-il-gop-about-who-gets-what-funds-and-who-decides-.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Review has asked, but has not heard yet from IL GOP Spokesperson Aaron DeGroot three preliminary questions: How does the IL GOP determine where the checks are going? Who is involved in that decision making? How much does the IL GOP expect to be distributed and to whom in the upcoming days before the March primary? We will report the responses as soon as we hear back from the IL GOP. If you have other questions you’d like to be asked of the IL GOP, please offer in the comment section below. UPDATE: State Representative David McSweeney (R-Barrington) called for IL GOP Party Chairman Tim Schneider to step down Wednesday afternoon: “Political insider Tim Schneider is a lapdog for failed Governor Rauner, the Worst Republican Governor in America,” McSweeney said in a text message to Illinois Review. “Incredibly Governor Rauner just admitted that he’s not in charge of the state. Schneider, who was the chief Rauner cheerleader for the Capitol Compromise tax hike and sanctuary state bill, should immediately resign as GOP Chairman.”)

— Senate’s tax plan approval is news to Rauner – Kim Geiger (DIERSEN: Obviously, beyond tragically, Rauner does not read GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails. Beyond obviously, if he has asked his wife, his staff, his volunteers, or anyone else to monitor GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for him, he should immediately fire them.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-congress-taxes-20171205-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The governor, however, was a few days behind on his news. Over a packed weekend welcoming Illinois National Guard troops home from Puerto Rico, riding his Harley in a Toys for Tots motorcycle run and attending the Illinois Bicentennial bash at Navy Pier, Rauner might have missed that Republican senators had voted for a sweeping tax bill early Saturday morning. “First of all, the Senate hasn’t passed anything,” Rauner said on Monday when asked to explain what he thought Congress needed to do to get the tax code right. “And what the Senate is talking about is very different than what the House is working on. They have a long, long way to go.” Indeed, distance remains between the House and Senate tax bills. But Senate Republicans’ approval of their own version was a big step forward and a sign they are willing to approve a tax overhaul even if it adds to the deficit. Rauner often has avoided talking about national issues, dismissing questions about activity in Congress as not relevant to his role as governor. And Monday wasn’t the first time that Rauner appeared out of the loop on the news.)
— History foretells a tough road: State Rep. Jeanne Ives’ decision to take on an incumbent governor in the March primary is unusual but not uncommon. In 2014, then-Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn bested anti-violence activist Tio Hardiman, 72 percent to 28 percent. In 2006, then-Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich defeated former Ald. Edwin Eisendrath 71 percent to 29 percent. And in 1994, then-Republican Gov. Jim Edgar won over the late-conservative businessman Jack Roeser, 75 percent to 25 percent. – Rick Pearson

— Roskam on sidelines in governor race: Republican U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam hasn’t taken sides in the GOP primary for governor. Asked by Chicago Tribune’s Editorial Board Monday if he eventually would, the Wheaton Republican said: “We’ll see.” Roskam lives in state Rep. Ives’ district and had signed a letter from Illinois’ Republican congressmen slamming Rauner for signing legislation expanding taxpayer-subsidized abortions for women covered by Medicaid or state employee health insurance. Roskam said there’s a parallel between the governor and Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Donald Trump. The two presidents came to Washington with “massive personalities” they thought were enough to get their agendas through, Roskam said. Likewise, Rauner, based on “incredible success in the private sector,” has run into roadblocks with the Illinois legislature, he said. “It’s a hard lesson for anybody to learn, particularly people who have been very successful in other walks of life,” he said. – Katherine Skiba

— Silverstein accuser gets into House race: The only person to publicly accuse a sitting state lawmaker of sexual harassment amid the ongoing scandal in Springfield filed to run for Illinois House on Monday. Denise Rotheimer filed as a Republican to run for a central Lake County seat now held by Democratic state Rep. Sam Yingling of Grayslake. Rotheimer accused Democratic state Sen. Ira Silverstein of sexual harassment at a public hearing. He has disputed the allegations and said he apologized “if I made her uncomfortable.” He has since resigned his leadership post and filed to seek re-election.

Republican state Rep. Jeanne Ives announced her candidacy to a group of supporters on Sunday. Ives on Rauner: ‘we got an Ivy League gender studies professor.’ “I supported and helped get Bruce Rauner elected governor in 2014. I believed his argument that his personal wealth would free him to do right by Illinois and lead the revolt against the political ruling class. I was wrong. http://www.cnn.com/2017/12/04/politics/jay-inslee-democratic-governors-2018/index.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If 2017’s trends, with Virginia and New Jersey easily electing Democratic governors, hold up, 2018 represents a massive opening for the party to reverse some of its losses during former President Barack Obama’s tenure. The party’s top pick-up opportunities could come in states with term-limited or retiring Republican governors: New Mexico, Florida, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio and Maine. Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner is also a top target.)

And that was pathetic. And now, for the media people who are kissing Trump’s butt…” Levy added, “The president should never like a media outlet, in the sense that he knows he’s always going to get favorable coverage. (FROM THE ARTICLE: While Big Marijuana pours millions into Illinois, leftist lawmakers, giddy about a tiny new revenue source to aid their insatiable spending, ignore the unmistakable damage legalization is causing Colorado. Colorado now ranks No. 1 in the entire nation for marijuana use among teens, scoring 55 percent above the national average, says the National Survey on Drug Use & Health. Colorado high school drug violations have increased 71 percent and suspensions for drugs have increased 45 percent since legalization. Based on alarming research by the Denver Post, drivers in fatal car crashes who tested positive have doubled since legalization. Residential neighborhoods reek of marijuana, as do warehouse growing operations along major freeways. As if that isn’t enough, the Colorado homelessness growth rate now ranks among the highest in the country. The bottom line is this: Does Illinois want more drugged drivers on our roads, more buzzed employees on job sites and more stoned students in our homes and schools? (FROM THE ARTICLE: Hi, Rich, One of the golden rules of journalism is to stick to the facts. Unfortunately, a hit piece published by Gateway Journalism Review missed the mark. The authors of this piece set out not to investigate the truth, but to build a case to support a false premise they’d already convinced themselves was true. Virtually every paragraph is riddled with inaccuracies or distortions. It’s important to note that before maligning the Illinois Policy Institute, the authors of this piece failed to pick up the phone and talk to the Institute. They even failed to offer our organization a chance to comment. If the authors had extended this basic journalistic courtesy, perhaps they could have avoided the many inaccuracies in their piece. Our bias — as the authors like to refer to our point of view — is to advocate for policies that empower the people, not the government. We believe in fiscal responsibility, limited government and reforms that will grow the state’s economy. It’s very clear that Gateway’s complaint about our organization isn’t a process disagreement over modes of operation, which nearly every media organization has confronted and experimented with as new media has reshaped the landscape. It’s a desire to silence different points of view and new ways of reaching the public. Hit pieces like this don’t make journalism better. They make Illinois worse. John Tillman)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Illinois GOP signals support for Republican tax plan, but does Rauner? – Tina Sfondeles (DIERSEN: From what I see, outrageously, under “Republican tax plan,” the more that your itemized deductions have been, the more federal income tax that you will pay. My and my wife’s 2016 federal income tax return shows that we had $30,890 in itemized deductions. We paid $21,433 in medical and dental expenses and we were able to deduct $13,859 of that, we paid $12,835 in real estate taxes, we paid $1,468 in state income taxes, and we made $2,728 in 501(c)(3) contributions. From what I see, outrageously, the proposed “tax reform” is designed to a) punish those who have high medical and dental expenses, b) discourage homeownership, and c) discourage taking job-related graduate courses. Government should encourage homeownership. The deductibility of mortgage interest and real estate taxes a) encouraged me to buy a new town home in 1972 when I was 24 years old, a studio condo in 1974, and a one bedroom condo in 1976 and b) encouraged my wife and I to buy a home in 1978 and to have one built in 1984. Further, government should encourage getting job-related education. The deductibility of job-related education encouraged me to take job-related graduate courses 1972-1983 and 1992-1997.)

WASHINGTON POST
— House to vote on lengthening trial period for federal employees from one to two years – Eric Yoder (DIERSEN: My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were furious that when I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, that because I had been under a probationary period at IRS, I was not under a probationary period at GAO. Nevertheless, they did everything that they could to get rid of me. They forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. GAO audits IRS. They kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO. They gave me unfair performance expectations and unfair performance appraisals. They assigned me to work for, to work with, and to supervise the office’s most problematic employees. They did not promote me beyond GS-13. They always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes. They forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, and even worse things. In my defense, I completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, became a licensed CPA in 1981, a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, a Certified Government Financial Manager in 1994, a Certified Financial Services Auditor in 1996, and a Forensic Accountant in 1997. In addition, I completed the requirements for a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997.)

http://www.newsweek.com/rex-tillerson-diversity-state-department-foreign-service-722653
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rex Tillerson is ousting many of the State Department’s high-ranking women diplomats and diplomats of color. On Friday, the New York Times revealed how Tillerson’s State Department is pushing out scores of career diplomats from the agency, offering them buyouts and early retirement in the hopes of getting them out the door. “Among those fired or sidelined were most of the top African-American and Latino diplomats, as well as many women, difficult losses in a department that has long struggled with diversity,” reported the Times. The drastic reduction in senior staff is part of Tillerson’s plan to slash the State Department’s expenses by 31 percent. Former officials warn that Tillerson is worsening America’s image abroad and compromising the country’s foreign policy agenda. “These people either do not believe the U.S. should be a world leader or they’re utterly incompetent,” former ambassador to Qatar Dana Shell Smith, who retired from the service in June, told the Times. Tillerson has put a stop to most hiring at the State Department and hopes to push out some 2,000 career diplomats by this time next year, according to the Times. Tillerson plans on doing so by arbitrarily denying posts and assignments to certain diplomats, as well as offering $25,000 contract buyouts for many of the agency’s senior staff. His aides have also simply fired many diplomats whose vision does not align with that of the Secretary of State. Senior non-male and non-white diplomats have been among those targeted by Tillerson. The State Department’s level of diversity has historically been low: In 2016, 5.4 percent of career diplomats were black, 6.9 percent were Asian, and 5.6 percent Hispanic, according to Foreign Policy. The Obama administration made an effort to increase the number of diplomats of color in order to create a Foreign Service that “looked more like America.” But Tillerson’s plans are much different. Instead of recruiting a more diverse pool of talent, the State Department is in the process of substantially reducing its staff, all but ending the drive to diversify the agency.)

Since 2009, I have been legally responsible for my 87-year-old aunt who has Alzheimer’s. She has lived in an assisted living facility since 2010 that currently costs $230/day. She did not attend college, she never married, she never had children, she had low-paying data entry jobs, she lived frugally, and she saved more than $600,000 for her retirement. Most of the time, that type of assistance is non-medical, including help with daily tasks such as bathing. The need can arise unexpectedly after a major illness or even suffering an injury from a fall. The costs of such care can easily outstrip retirement savings: A 65-year-old today can expect to incur $138,000 in long-term care costs over their lifetime, according to a 2017 Bipartisan Policy Center report. Two-thirds of Americans age 40 and up say they’ve done little or no planning for their long-term care needs, according to a poll conducted this year by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, with funding from the SCAN Foundation.)

FOX NEWS CHICAGO

http://www.fox32chicago.com/news/local/rauner-faces-challenge-from-gop-in-2018
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ives is getting support from an anti-abortion activist base that “is basically done with Rauner,” said Republican businessman Vince Kolber, who knocked on doors for Rauner in 2014 but is now volunteering for Ives’ campaign. Assuming Rauner makes it to the general election, some of those voters — an important part of the GOP base — could opt to stay home on Election Day rather than vote to give him a second term. Kolber, who has a home in Florida, said if Rauner wins the primary, he’ll consider registering to vote in Florida in November rather than support Rauner again. Ives said she’s “a party person” and will vote for the GOP nominee. But “My husband won’t. And neither will many of my friends.”  Ives’ candidacy could reinforce the image Rauner stressed during his successful 2014 campaign of being a moderate and an outsider, Gaines said. That could help him win over some independents and other voters looking for someone who’s more middle-of-the-road — the kind of Republican candidate Illinois voters have historically favored for statewide office — or not beholden to a political party. “It might generally help him if he can say ‘The establishment in both parties doesn’t like me because I’m shaking things up,’” Gaines said. Democrats already have been fighting it out for their party’s nomination. More than a half dozen Democrats have said they’re running, including state Sen. Daniel Biss, businessman Chris Kennedy and billionaire J.B. Pritzker. The candidate filing period ends Dec. 4. Candidates for statewide office must submit at least 5,000 valid signatures; people seeking to challenge the validity of a candidate’s petitions have until Dec. 11 to file an objection that would be considered before the ballot is finalized.)
— Shoppers crowd stores to support local businesses – Dakarai Turner (DIERSEN: How much money do you have to shop locally with? Since 1997, in today’s dollars, I have had $1,454,723 less dollars to shop locally with, that is, $72,135 less a year, $6,011 less a month, $1,403 less a week, and $200 less a day. In 1997, my Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer.” In 1997, in today’s dollars, my GAO salary was $122,991/year. But my Civil Service Retirement System pension is only $50,856/year, or 41% of that.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Shoppers flocked to locally owned shops as part of Small Business Saturday. “Half of everyone in Illinois, half of everyone in America works for a locally-owned small business,” said Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner at a bakery in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood. “They are providing jobs, creating products and developing services that drive our nation and the state of Illinois towards economic growth.”)

VINCE KOLBER
— Biography (DIERSEN: Sadly, according to people who presented themselves at Ive’s November 20, 2017 fundraiser as being spokespersons for Kolber, Kolbler did not want to speak with me and he wanted me to be evicted from the event because I am a “reporter.”
https://www.facebook.com/pg/VoteVinceKolber/about/?ref=page_internal
(BIOGRAPHY: Vince Kolber has called the 5th congressional district home for his entire adult life. Vince Kolber’s personal story matches the hopes, dreams and aspirations of his future constituents. Born of Polish immigrant stock, Vince learned the values of hard work and family that immigrants bring with them to America, home of the American Dream. The youngest of three brothers, Vince learned honesty and integrity at an early age. Vince was raised to be a good listener, to value the opinions of others and to seek opportunities to serve the community. Vince started his first job at 12, cleaning out dog kennels before rushing home to deliver the evening paper. Vince worked his way through school as a short order cook, janitor and truck driver, or as Vince likes to say: “I did whatever I could to support myself, be successful and make my parents proud. In Congress my goal is to create good-paying jobs, protect seniors and working families, and to ensure a better future and increase opportunity for every family and young adult in the 5th congressional district.” Vince left his boyhood home of West Seneca, New York, to attend Wharton, the business school at the University of Pennsylvania. Vince then earned his MBA from the University of Chicago, attending school at night while launching his own equipment leasing business focused on the transportation industry. Vince is the founder and principal of RESIDCO, which has supported the creation, expansion and maintenance of thousands of jobs here at home and across the country. Vince serves on the board of Little Sisters of the Poor and has always been active in his local community. Vince donates and helps raise money for the Sacred Heart Schools and the Big Shoulders Foundation, which provides support to Catholic schools in the most needy areas of inner city Chicago. Vince has also chaired the board of directors at St. Genevieve, a mostly Hispanic K-8 school on Chicago’s West Side. Vince is running for Congress on a platform of job creation, government living within its means, eliminating waste, fraud and abuse, stopping government from snooping into or interfering with our private lives, ending crony capitalism and corporate welfare while eliminating tax breaks for the privileged few in favor of lower tax rates for all. Most importantly, Vince will ensure those most in need have access to services they require. With your help, Vince Kolber will be elected Illinois’ newest congressman.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: With 70 percent of the NFL comprised of African-American players, according to Answers.com and Reference.com, there is a new reason for Goodell to toss and turn at night. American young adults are divided along racial lines when it comes to protests from NFL players during our national anthem, says a study from Ball State University and the University of Texas at Dallas. The study found African-American respondents were more likely than other ethnic groups to agree with forms of protests such as kneeling, sitting and fist-raising during the national anthem — while being less likely to support punishment of the players by either the NFL or team owners. That’s no surprise, given the divisive times we live in.)

— The Republican Tax on the Future – Editorial
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/25/opinion/sunday/the-republican-tax-on-the-future.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Of all the lies Republican lawmakers and President Trump tell about their tax bills, the biggest whopper is that these windfall tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy would generate so much growth that they would pay for themselves. The House and Senate tax bills probably would provide a tiny lift to the economy for a couple years — enough, supporters no doubt hope, for them to cynically claim success. It’s what comes next that the G.O.P. glosses over: the addition of more than a trillion dollars to the federal debt in just 10 years. Far from paying for themselves, these cuts would leave a bill for several future generations to pay off. In other words, Republican leaders aren’t just trying to transfer money from current middle-class and poor Americans to corporations and the very wealthy. They are also trying to transfer money from future middle-class and poor Americans to corporations and the very wealthy.)
