(FROM THE ARTICLE: More than 200 people marched 4 miles Sunday from a park in the Pilsen neighborhood toward U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement headquarters in the South Loop to support the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program now under review by the Trump administration. Immigration advocates and supporters from several groups, including Black Lives Matter Chicago and Refuse Fascism, gathered at Harrison Park and chanted “Si se puede” (Spanish for “Yes, we can”) as they marched up 18th Street toward the Loop, calling on President Donald Trump to save the program created by the Obama administration that shields young immigrants from deportation and provides work permits for employment. Ald. Raymond Lopez, 15th, addressed the crowd and called on the country to be united, “regardless of color and origin.” He said Trump “makes a mockery” of the nation. “No matter who is in the White House, no matter who is in Congress, you were here before them and you will be here after them,” Lopez said. “Chicago is committed to being a welcoming city to everyone who wants to be here.” Karen Ramirez, 26, a Pilsen resident and DACA recipient, said she and fellow program recipients are productive members of society who are fighting for the chance to stay in America because they consider it home. “This is our country. This is our home. A lot of us don’t even know what our native countries look like,” Ramirez said. “We are asking everyone to please come together and help us to fight to stay in this country,” she said. “At the end of the day, Dreamers are Americans too.” Cecilia Garcia, a local immigration activist, said the program recipients are marching to mobilize their allies and to let the president know that there will be resistance if he moves to cancel the program. “Now we wait another day to see if the Trump administration will make 800,000 Dreamers outlaws with the stroke of a pen,” she said. The rally was organized by Familia Latina Unida. Former President Barack Obama launched the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in 2012 for people who have been in the U.S. since 2007, were younger than 16 at the time of their arrival and were younger than 31 as of 2012. Those enrolled can legally drive and work, but they must reapply every two years. They are considered a low priority for immigration enforcement, though they are not protected from deportation. The Trump administration has until Tuesday to eliminate the program or face legal action from a group of Republican state lawmakers. Illinois has the nation’s fourth-largest population of DACA recipients — the highest share in the Midwest. At least 42,376 Illinoisans have been approved since March 31, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Current students, high school or GED course graduates and veterans are eligible for the program. They must be at least 15 to apply, unless they’re in removal proceedings or have a final removal or voluntary departure order. Immigrants who have committed a serious crime, have more than two misdemeanor convictions or are deemed to be a threat to national security are automatically disqualified. Nationally, about 68 percent of eligible immigrants have applied for the program since 2012, according to the Migration Policy Institute. More than 886,000 people have applied and 787,580 have been approved. The White House said a decision will be announced Tuesday.)

Most commonly, those in the “center” are Democrat plants, Libertarian plants, and Green plants. Most commonly, they reject the traditional family, right to life, and immigration planks in the IRP platform. Most commonly, they promote LGBTQ activity, booze, gambling, pot, and other vices. At the moment, Rauner has no known opponent in the GOP primary. But this nasty divorce could play out in unexpected ways. One veteran GOP operative says it’s not quite clear who’s doing what. But other outside political consultants brought in by Rauner when Zolnierowicz left likely have told him that, in Democratic-leaning Illinois, it’s smarter to act like former GOP Gov. Jim Thompson and Jim Edgar. Rauner himself may not know. But continue to look for more rolling-pin-wielding in his bumpy marriage with the GOP’s hard right.)

Kyle McCarter believes the sanctuary state bill signed into law yesterday will negatively effect the governor’s re-election hopes. “This is not just bad policy,” McCarter said of Rauner’s adoption of the Trust Act. “It’s bad politics.” The “sanctuary state” measure in Senate Bill 31 limits the role local and state police can have in enforcing federal immigration laws. While Rauner touts the Act as one that will improve “connectivity between immigrants and law enforcement, making Illinois safer for all residents,” critics like McCarter say it shows the governor “is not committed to protecting the citizens of Illinois but criminal Illegals.” Leading up to Rauner’s action yesterday, McCarter addressed criticism he faced for not backing his fellow Republican. McCarter said that party loyalty can only go so far. “You can’t overlook what’s right and wrong, and you can’t defend what’s wrong as though it’s right just because your party leader says this is the way it is,” McCarter said in a Facebook post. “We all need to be held accountable.” In a radio interview with radio hosts Dan Proft and Amy Jacobson at AM 560 in Chicago on Tuesday morning, McCarter said he was concerned about “my party” and its brand being tainted, or at least “confused.” He said that within the congressional district he is considering taking a run at – the 15th Congressional District currently represented by Republican John Shimkus – a majority in the 33 counties of the southern Illinois district voted for President Trump. “His immigration policy was one of the reasons they voted for him,” McCarter said. “I think this is going to negatively effect Rauner’s election.” When asked whether Rauner might face a primary challenge, McCarter said he wasn’t sure it was a practical idea as any rival would run against “a very wealthy man.” But he also said that primaries are good because they make candidates better, forcing them to focus on what they stand for. In a final segment of the radio program, Proft turned to an article in a news outlet Proft established – Prairie State Wire – that examines state contracts totaling $16.88 billion amassed for clients of Nancy Kimme, a Republican, whom he described as a “longtime inside player.” Kimme had served as chief of staff to the late Judy Baar Topinka, who passed away shortly after being elected state comptroller in 2014. After Topinka’s passing, Kimme turned to lobbying, and according to Proft, had worked out of the governor’s office under the “previous regime” before a staff shakeup in July. Proft asked McCarter about Rauner’s promise to “shake up” Springfield and turn around Illinois, as in his version of “draining the swamp.” “Unfortunately, Republicans in Illinois dwell in the swamp as well,” McCarter said. “It’s not just a home for Democrats. Cultures of corruption don’t change overnight, no culture does…typically what happens when it does change, you have spectacular principled leaders and it’s those leaders that stand strong and can really move culture in the right direction.” McCarter said he “knew the reality” of how things work in Springfield when he had asked a state agency director about employment for someone he knew. “I had asked a director one time in this administration if there was a place to provide a job to a man who was unjustly treated by the previous administration, and one of best workers we had in the state,” McCarter said. “And he told me he couldn’t do anything about that, but he told me that I should go to the firm of Nancy Kimme…I thought that was just a little odd.” Proft said, “The agency director couldn’t do anything but the shadow government could, if you wanted to enlist them at a price.” “Exactly,” McCarter said. “That is disappointing and shows you the depth of this culture of corruption.”)

Some say it makes Illinois a “sanctuary” state while some say it just codifies court rulings and has symbolic importance only. But even that symbolic importance is huge. Many opponents of sanctuary cities, who comprise much of Rauner’s base, are absolutely livid and they don’t really give a damn whether it’s just symbolic. Rauner’s support is now getting national attention and derision. The bottom line is that both Illinois and Rauner lost big time on Monday, and it wasn’t just because of politics, spin, or Rauner’s bad communication skills. On the subject of communication, yes, Rauner’s staff has long shared blame and the recent turmoil in his staff left a void. But the primary failure is Rauner’s own. He’s seems forever unprepared. Though usually directionally correct, he gets facts wrong, exaggerates and sometimes just doesn’t know. He contradicts himself from one day to another. Platitudes suffice for arguments. Since he’s unquestionably smart and a true workaholic, he has no excuse for appearing to be so lazy about substance. Ironically, while his conservative base wobbles, the narrative prevails that right wing nutjobs now dominate his staff. Among other reasons why that’s false is that First Lady Diana Rauner, by all credible accounts, is the most powerful person on the team. I don’t know her but those who do say she’ smart, opinionated and driven, though less charitable synonyms aren’t uncommon. Most importantly, she’s a liberal Democrat and she pushes for liberal Democratic policies. To her and to her fellow party members in the General Assembly, I say this sincerely: Touché. You had an extraordinarily successful Monday, on both policy and politics.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: On August 28th, the West Chicago Public Library Board voted 6-1 to retain the homosexuality-celebrating picture book This Day in June. IFI thanks you for your support in emailing the library director Benjamin Weseloh to share your concerns about this book. There were roughly 80-100 people in attendance, and 90 percent of them were pro-LGBT supporters of the book. Unfortunately, this is usually the case when book controversies arise. Those who seek to normalize disordered sexuality are far more passionate, tenacious, and bold than are those who oppose the normalization of sexual deviance. The Left seems to care far more about promoting lies to young children than conservatives do in protecting them from lies. Those community members who had the wisdom and courage to oppose this troubling picture book needed much more verbal support at the meeting. IFI is disappointed in the absence of local community support for those brave men and women. We know significant opposition to this book exists because of the hundreds of messages that were sent to the director, but emails alone are insufficient if real change is to occur. Sometimes people are unable to make meetings, but often emailing concerns represents indefensible cowardice or surrender. The supporters of the book came out strongly against IFI, explicitly attacking us and making numerous spurious statements. The most obviously false statement was that IFI is a hate group. IFI’s positions on homosexuality no more constitute hatred of persons who believe differently than does disapproval of polyamory or polygamy constitute hatred of polyamorists or polygamists. Leftists are either unable to understand this distinction or unwilling to admit it because they know that fallacious ad hominem attacks work. The most startling remarks made in support of the book were that the content was not sexual. This is a complete denial of reality and a reminder that people will pervert the truth to suit their own lifestyles. The book is specifically intended toward “helping” children recognize and accept the diversity of sexual preferences. It features men kissing men and women kissing women. Since when is romantic kissing or even simply kissing romantic partners not a sexual act? Some of the board members noted the importance of the library representing the diverse views found in its community. The speciousness of this claim is revealed in the absence of books on a host of topics. This absence is due—at least in part—to librarians imposing their moral views through the purchasing process. When they impose their views, it’s called responsible text selection. When conservatives want purchases to reflect their views, leftists call it censorship and book-banning. We were disappointed not only in learning how the board members voted but also in learning that regardless of their votes, the book would have stayed on the shelf. According to the parliamentarian, the policy of the board is to let the library staff decide for themselves the quality of material, so last night’s vote was a non-binding vote. The board’s policy is reflective of the American Library Association (ALA), the far-leftist organization that wanted children’s computers to have access to pornography) and which actively promotes homosexuality and the “trans” ideology. Should unelected library staff whose training comes through the highly politicized and leftist field of library science be granted such near-absolute autonomy?Ultimately, if community members want to see this inappropriate book moved to a restricted area—as it is in other local libraries like Downers Grove—or removed altogether, they will either have to convince the staff to move or remove the book, or West Chicagoans must elect better board members to change board policy. West Chicago Public Library employee Joan Happel posted this celebratory announcement on Facebook, “The library director’s decision is to keep the book where it is! That decision was never in question.” Happel evidently finds nothing problematic about a picture book for young children whose author said this: “When I wrote this story, I wanted Pride to be featured as realistically as possible. I wanted to see drag queens, guys in leather, rainbows, political signs, the Dykes on Bikes—everything you would see at Pride. I didn’t want any of it to be watered-down or sugarcoated. Lots of people have asked me, “Do you think that’s appropriate for children?” And my answer always is YES.” Unfortunately, numerous libraries throughout the country and in Illinois are using public monies to promote the normalization of homosexuality and the “trans” ideology. The battle against dissenting views—including Judeo-Christian views—continues. Those relatively few brave souls who step up to oppose deception—especially deception that harms children—need many others to come alongside them. The Rauner Administration also approved $684,000 in state grants for a group called MIGRANT EDUCATION, INC. . . . What is Migrant Education, Inc. anyway?  How horrible is Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights? The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights is a group that promotes open borders. Why is it receiving any state money when Illinois’ debt backlog exceeds $14 billion. In 2013, the group also spearheaded the bipartisan legislation to allow undocumented immigrants to get Illinois driver’s licenses. D. James Kennedy Ministries in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has sued the SPLC for labeling it as an “active hate group” because it holds to traditional Christian views on homosexuality and marriage. Why would a Christian ministry be a hate group? As sexual orientation and gender identity have become “civil rights” issues on the front lines of the culture wars in the United States, people and organizations, particularly churches, that do not support LGBTQ lifestyles are increasingly under fire from mainstream media and organizations like the SPLC, who claim these religiously-based beliefs are bigoted and discriminatory. Christianity, at its core, is about love. By designating a Christian organization as a hate group, the SPLC is pursuing a culture in which disagreement with the mainstream equals hate. “It’s completely disingenuous to tag D. James Kennedy Ministries as a hate group alongside the KKK and neo-Nazis,” Kennedy Ministries spokesman John Rabe said to Fox News. “We desire all people, with no exceptions, to receive the love of Christ and his forgiveness and healing. We unequivocally condemn violence, and we hate no one. “It’s nothing more than an attempt to bulldoze over those who disagree with them, and it has a chilling effect on the free exercise of religion in a nation built on that,” Rabe continued. “We decided not to let their falsehoods stand.” I’ve never heard of D. James Kennedy. Why should I care? The SPLC’s attacks on Christian organizations are significant to all Christians. The SPLC has a storied history of taking up noble causes and using the law to bring justice and fight legitimate hate. The SPLC did significant damage to the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s, for example. Because of that history, the SPLC is an influential voice in shaping public perception of organizations. Categorization as a hate group by the SPLC leads to increased animosity and opposition from the culture at-large. For churches, that opposition can hinder them from serving communities both at home and worldwide. Religious freedom is a form of free speech, and irresponsible attacks from the SPLC and others on religious expression aren’t likely to stop with churches. Aggressively suppressing the views of certain groups, especially when you have to twist their message in order to do so, is a slippery slope. “These false and illegal characterizations have a chilling effect on the free exercise of religion and on religious free speech for all people of faith,” a statement from Kennedy Ministries read. “After having given the SPLC an opportunity to retract, we have undertaken this legal action, seeking a trial by a jury of our peers, to preserve our own rights under the law and to defend the religious free speech rights of all Americans.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Corporate America will do almost anything to stay on the safe side of public opinion—at least as it’s defined by the media. CEOs will apologize, grovel, resign, settle. They will even, as of this month, legitimize and fund an outfit that exists to smear conservatives. The press is still obsessing over President Trump’s incompetent handling of the violence in Charlottesville, Va., and that has suited some profiteers just fine. The notorious Southern Poverty Law Center is quietly cashing in on the tragedy, raking in millions on its spun-up reputation as a group that “fights hate.” Apple CEO Tim Cook informed employees that his company is giving $1 million to SPLC and matching employee donations. J.P. Morgan Chase is pitching in $500,000, specifically to further the SPLC’s “work in tracking, exposing and fighting hate groups and other extremist organizations,” in the words of Peter Scher, the bank’s head of corporate responsibility. What Mr. Scher is referring to is the SPLC’s “Hate Map,” its online list of 917 American “hate groups.” The SPLC alone decides who goes on the list, but its criteria are purposely vague. Since the SPLC is a far-left activist group, the map comes down to this: If the SPLC doesn’t agree with your views, it tags you as a hater. Let’s not mince words: By funding this list, J.P. Morgan and Apple are saying they support labeling Christian organizations that oppose gay marriage as “hate groups.” That may come as a sour revelation to any bank customers who have donated to the Family Research Council (a mainstream Christian outfit on the SPLC’s list) or whose rights are protected by the Alliance Defending Freedom (which litigates for religious freedom and is also on the list). Similarly put out may be iPhone owners who support the antiterror policies espoused by Frank Gaffney’s Washington think tank, the Center for Security Policy (on the SPLC’s list). Or any who back the proposals of the Center for Immigration Studies (on the list). These corporations are presumably in favor of the SPLC’s practice of calling its political opponents “extremists,” which paints targets on their backs. The group’s “Field Guide to Anti-Muslim Extremists” lists Mr. Gaffney (who worked for the Reagan administration); Maajid Nawaz (a British activist whose crimes include tweeting a cartoon of Jesus and Muhammad ); and Ayaan Hirsi Ali (a Somali refugee who speaks out against Islamic extremism). The SPLC has tarred the respected social scientist Charles Murray, author of the well-regarded book “Losing Ground,” as a “white nationalist.” Mr. Murray has been physically assaulted on campus as a result. He happens to be married to an Asian woman and has Asian daughters, so the slur is ludicrous. But what’s a little smearing and career destruction if J.P. Morgan Chase gets some good headlines? It isn’t only the lists. An honest outfit tracking violent groups would keep to straightforward descriptions and facts. Instead, the SPLC’s descriptions of people are brutally partisan, full of half-truths and vitriol designed to inspire fury. We’ve seen what this kind of fury can do in Europe, with the murder of Theo Van Gogh, the controversial filmmaker, by a Dutch-Moroccan Islamic fanatic. Ms. Hirsi Ali, who had worked with Van Gogh, still travels with security—and J.P. Morgan thinks it appropriate to further target her? In 2012 a gay-marriage supporter named Floyd Corkins smashed into the Family Research Council’s headquarters and shot a security guard. He told police he was inspired by the SPLC’s “hate group” designation. Had the companies done a bit of homework, they’d have discovered the SPLC isn’t even considered a sound charity. Karl Zinsmeister excoriated the outfit in a recent article for Philanthropy Roundtable: “Its two largest expenses are propaganda operations: creating its annual list of ‘haters’ and ‘extremists,’ and running a big effort that pushes ‘tolerance education’ through more than 400,000 public-school teachers. And the single biggest effort undertaken by the SPLC? Fundraising. On the organization’s 2015 IRS 990 form it declared $10 million of direct fundraising expenses, far more than it has ever spent on legal services.” Apple did not return a call to its media center. J.P. Morgan Chase, in an emailed statement, said only that it has a “long history of supporting a range of organizations that are committed to addressing inequality.” The corporate donations are nonetheless appalling, as they legitimize a group that already exercises inappropriate influence. The SPLC’s list is cited regularly by the media and congressional Democrats, ignorant or uncaring of its falsehoods. The charity tracker GuideStar for a time attached warning labels to philanthropies flagged by the SPLC. This undermines the fight against truly hateful groups. Comparing pro bono lawyers at the Alliance Defending Freedom to hood-wearing KKK members only make the Klan seem more innocuous. Blackballing mainstream groups only silences the moderate voices the country needs to fight hate and bigotry. Corporations have a role to play in calming today’s divisions. This is the opposite.)
