(FROM THE ARTICLE: Carrying signs with messages like “my parents aren’t criminals” and “kids shouldn’t live in fear,” more than a thousand Elgin High School students walked out of the school just after noon on Wednesday to march in protest of federal immigration enforcement. Multiple students estimated that about three-quarters of their roughly 2,500 classmates participated. “We want people to see that we can make a difference and that what we’re doing is important,” senior Silvia Scimonelli said. The roughly 2-mile march along frequently snow-covered sidewalks took the students from the school to Chicago Street, where they headed west to Willard Avenue, then south to Villa Street and back to the school. The protest follows a similar event at Elgin Area School District U-46’s Streamwood High School. Walkouts are also planned in the coming days at Larkin and South Elgin high schools. Freshman Jamison Vaskin said he took part because “what is happening in America is 100% not OK.” “I’m out here because of the dehumanization that’s happening in our country,” he said. “The attack on our Constitution and our rights, the constant abuse that ICE is inflicting on our citizens, the murder of American citizens. It is heinous.” Matthew Napoles donned a sombrero and carried a portable speaker while leading his classmates in songs and chants. He said he was there to “show ICE that we obviously don’t like them.” “They always try to take away the people that we love, and I’m just trying to keep them safe,” he said. A statement from the school district said the walkout was “initiated by a group of students who wished to express their views about an issue that is important to them.” The district sent a communication to parents on Tuesday to make them aware of the walkout and encouraged families to have conversations about “respectful expression, civic engagement, and making responsible choices while at school.” A spokesperson for the district said students who participated in the walkout were marked absent for missed instructional time, in accordance with district policy. Students were allowed back in after the protest.)

I erroneously believed that because I was not strong in math, I could never pass the CPA examination. But I belatedly learned that accountants do not use the types of math that I was not strong in.

The students also referenced the deaths of two American citizens at the hands of federal agents in Minneapolis, with many calling for the abolition of ICE. “If you are a minority, you are a target. If you stand up to them, you are a target. Michigan Ave. Both politicians, she said, made clear that “dignity is not conditional” in the state. She added, “And yes—abolish ICE,” to loud applause. “Hands off our families. Hands off our cities. Hands off our state. Hands off our community.” Parker, a longtime LGBTQ+-rights advocate who’d been active in several Chicago organizations, was tapped as Equality Illinois’s interim CEO in June, then named to the position permanently in August. She is the organization’s first transgender Black leader. She emphasized throughout her speech the need to work as a collective in order to safeguard the rights of LGBTQ+ Illinoisans and other individuals living at the margins, even as right-wing elements continue to flex their political power: “This work is strictly by coalition [and] personal acts.” Parker added, “I promise my work continues. … Conspiracy is being used as a strategy. Chaos is being sold as inevitable.” She promised that her organization is up for the challenge, however. “That is the reality that Equality Illinois is built to face,” Parker said, warning that giving in to outrage will surely lead to disillusionment in the the long run. “Our job is not to chase every headline, or over-react ourselves into exhaustion. The petition called on GW Law and the Georgetown University Law Center to remove ICE and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from “all current components and future renditions” of the law schools’ joint event. “ICE is a fascist organization, tasked with carrying out ethnic cleansing, family separation, and extreme brutality and violence,” the petition states. Dean Dayna Matthew met with the students who spearheaded the petition to discuss their concerns, and later sent an email stating the GW Law administrators decided not to rescind ICE’s invitation, The GW Hatchet reported. The dean cited free expression and university policy. The university is “committed to principles that protect all students’ right to ideological expression,” she stated. Matthew added that recruitment programs must remain open to all employers, even if some view their actions as objectionable. “In my view, providing PSRP access to an employer does not signal endorsement or support of that employer’s work or values,” Matthew stated. “My decision does support and endorse GW Law students’ right to express opposition to an employer consistent with the university’s freedom of expression policy,” she stated. After administrators declined to remove ICE, at least 20 employers pulled out of the career fair. However, the petition did have some impact. ICE’s Office of the Principal Legal Advisor withdrew from the event while the agency’s Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Center remained involved. Still, students were disappointed. “To bring an organization whose sole mission is to divide people, make people feel unwelcome, remove people from spaces and create a sense of unsafety and unrest into that space — a space that so many people in this community have worked so hard to curate — was very insulting to the people who have tried to make this such a welcoming place,” said student Anapaula Pérez-Gaitan, who is the program manager at the school’s public interest center. I supervised the operation’s entire staff which included a rotating staff of about 90 IRS Revenue Agent trainees. Because of my job performance, the IRS manager who had given me that developmental opportunity and who had promoted me in 1972 and 1973 promoted me to GS-12 (currently $100,059/year) in 1974.

But IRS employees actually answered less than a third of calls received during the 2024 filing season — both in terms of total calls, and calls to accounts management phone lines. The agency calculates its LOS metric by taking the percentage of phone calls answered by IRS employees and dividing it by the number of calls routed to IRS staff. The IRS relies on this metric, as well as historical data on call volumes, to set targets for how many calls it has the capacity to answer, and to set hiring and training goals in preparation for each tax filing season.)

Because of the aforesaid adverse actions, I took a $23,699/year (21%) pay cut, a downgrade from GS-12 Step 5 ($113,402/year) to GS-9 Step 10 ($89,703/year), to transfer to GAO in 1980. My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were furious. According to them, I should have had to take a $72,701/year (64%) pay cut to transfer, a downgrade from GS-12 Step 5 to GS-4 Step 1 ($40,701/year). They succeeded in delaying my promotion to GS-13 ($118,984/year) until 1986.
