(FROM THE ARTICLE: Between 1892 and 1954, approximately 12 million immigrants arrived at the now-iconic Ellis Island to enter the U.S. — or nearly 200,000 legal entries per year. All were registered, documented, and given rudimentary health exams. They arrived as rich and poor, white and non-white, and, without exception, legally. With the gradual decline of such great influxes, Ellis Island finally ceased operating roughly 71 years ago. Yet Ellis Island’s successful tenure offers a sharp contrast to the failures of our recent open-border catastrophes. Americans will never know how many immigrants swarmed the southern border between 2021 and 2025, when former President Joe Biden and his impeached Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas destroyed federal immigration law as we once knew it. By design, they allowed between 10 and 12 million foreign nationals to make a mockery of federal immigration laws by swarming the southern border. Many crossers grew violent at any sign of even meek efforts by ICE officers to enforce the law. Border Patrol officers were often mocked, threatened, and assaulted by arriving illegal aliens. Officers were unsure as to what was worse: the occasional violence from illegal immigrants or retaliation from the Biden administration if they sought to enforce federal law and block illegal entrants. So the Biden administration pulled off the near impossible. In a mere four years, it had invited in almost as many illegal immigrants as had entered through Ellis Island legally over seven decades. But unlike past immigrants, we now witness organized violence against ICE officials. We see Orwellian scenes of mobs burning the American flag — the flag of the country they demand to stay in — while waving the flags of the countries they have no desire or intention of returning to. In sum, three generations ago, a smaller, poorer, but wiser America properly solved its immigration problem at Ellis Island — welcoming in immigrants orderly and legally with health and background screenings. In contrast, during the Biden years, we, in our arrogance and affluence, engaged in a great experiment — or rather misadventure. Never in our history has the U.S. been home to roughly 53 million foreign-born residents. Never have immigrants comprised nearly 16 percent of the population. Never has California had 27% of its residents not born in the U.S. Never have we allowed in up to 10,000 aliens a day, with little concern for whether they carried fentanyl, had criminal records, were sick, were unvaccinated, were traffickers, or belonged to violent gangs. Worse still, the Biden administration made zero effort to acculturate, integrate, and assimilate this massive influx. In fact, they did the very opposite of Ellis Island’s protocols, which fostered pro-American values, melting-pot integration, and respect for American history and culture. Once upon a time, new arrivals were all expected to become Americans — or why else had they come? Now, the moment an illegal alien has entered the U.S., he likely senses that his ethnicity or race will be essential to his identity. In the minds of the ruling DEI commissariat, claiming a tribal identity offers an easy pathway to generous housing, food, healthcare, legal, and educational entitlements. So, under Biden’s immigration non-policy, almost all illegal immigrants were immediately categorized as victims in the Marxist binary ledger that now divides America into the oppressed vs. the oppressors. If one devised a plan to damage America, he could not have done better than further dividing us by tribal chauvinism, overwhelming our fragile social services so essential to struggling Americans, and fueling the already dangerous neo-Confederate state and local nullifications of federal law and the growth of “sanctuary cities.” Daily, we witness performance-art mayors and governors boasting of how they “resist” federal law enforcement. These modern rebels pose as if they are our own era’s versions of mini-Confederate states. They now brag of states’ rights as they dare the federal government to protect its own property and enforce federal laws within their parochial jurisdictions. Why did Biden — or whoever was making policy in his place — destroy the border? What was his utterly mad intent? To alter the nation’s demography by importing future Democratic constituents dependent on state largesse? To bow to the demands of his DEI base? To mindlessly do the opposite of the prior Trump administration, which had closed the border and returned to legal-only immigration? Virtue signaling while waving illegal aliens across an open border is easy. But trying to close the border and return millions who entered unlawfully to their homelands is nearly impossible. Military service is also possible through the commission process if you have a college degree. This will set you up as an officer with higher pay rates and better leadership opportunities. Commission can be reached through a service academy, ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps), or an officer training/candidate school (OCS, OTS) with a college degree. Staff members at ICE’s training academy in Brunswick, Georgia, recently discovered one recruit had previously been charged with strong-arm robbery and battery stemming from a domestic violence incident, the current DHS official said. They’ve also found as recently as this month that some recruits going through the six-week training course hadn’t submitted fingerprints for background checks, as ICE’s hiring process requires, the current and former DHS officials said. Per ICE policy, applicants are required to pass drug tests and undergo security vetting through ICE’s human resources office before they show up for the training course. The former officials said the process was more strictly adhered to before a hiring surge that began this summer. The process was meant to weed out disqualified candidates before they would be sent to training. Since the surge began, ICE has dismissed more than 200 new recruits while they were in training for falling short of its hiring requirements, according to recently collected internal ICE data reviewed by NBC News. The majority of them failed to meet ICE’s physical or academic standards, according to the data. Just under 10 recruits were dismissed for criminal charges, failing to pass drug tests or safety concerns that should have been flagged in background checks before they arrived at training, the data indicated and the current and former DHS officials confirmed. The officials said there is growing concern that in the Trump administration’s race to expand the number of ICE agents to 10,000 by the end of the year, the agency could miss red flags in the backgrounds of some new recruits and inadvertently hire them. “There is absolutely concern that some people are slipping through the cracks,” the current DHS official said. The official said many of the issues that have been flagged during training surface only because the recruits admitted they didn’t submit to fingerprinting or drug testing before they arrived. “What about the ones who don’t admit it?” the official said. The Department of Homeland Security told NBC News in a statement that most of its new recruits are former law enforcement officers and former ICE officers who go through a different process. . .The Atlantic reported this week on the struggle some ICE recruits have had with meeting the agency’s physical fitness requirements. The broader scope of issues and specific data haven’t been previously reported. ICE has been under pressure from the White House to increase hiring with the funding Congress designated in the sweeping tax and spending bill that Trump signed into law on July 4. It has frequently lagged behind the White House’s arrest goal of 3,000 per day, which it has attributed to a lack of staffing. As part of the effort, ICE shortened the training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Georgia from 13 weeks to eight. The training was later shortened to six weeks, the DHS official said. Recruits also are supposed to attest that they can pass ICE’s physical fitness test, which includes setups, pullups and running 1½ miles in under 14 minutes, 25 seconds. Darius Reeves, who recently left his position as ICE field office director in Baltimore, said he believes the agency’s Aug. 6 decision to waive age limits so older people can join has led to more recruits’ failing the physical test. “These new recruits are dropping like flies,” Reeves said in an interview after having spoken with colleagues seeking to bring new hires into the agency. “And rightly so; it makes sense. We’re going to drop the age requirements, of course this was going to happen.” Nearly half of new recruits who’ve arrived for training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center over the past three months were later sent home because they couldn’t pass the written exam, according to the data. The academic requirement includes an exam in which officers are allowed to consult their textbooks and notes at the end of a legal course on the Immigration and Nationality Act and the Fourth Amendment, which outlines when officers can and can’t conduct searches and seizures. A slightly smaller group were dismissed because they failed the physical fitness test or had medical challenges; some of those sent home had made it clear on their applications that they couldn’t meet ICE’s physical requirements but were sent to training anyway, the current and former DHS officials said. Fewer than 10 of the new recruits were dismissed because ICE training leaders learned from them during the training program that they had pending criminal charges or failed their drug tests or were otherwise considered safety concerns, the officials said. The three sources said ICE’s human resources office is overwhelmed with more than 150,000 new applicants who have applied since ICE began offering $50,000 signing bonuses in August. (FROM THE ARTICLE: With the victory of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York City, a man with a Muslim name, an African past and an Indian lineage, the American-Christian establishment suddenly feels threatened. Not because of what Mamdani will do, but because of what his name suggests he should be. His name is Persian for ‘bloom’, his surname is how the medieval Gujarati trade would articulate ‘Muhammadan’. In today’s America, “Christian” has quietly become a code word for “white”. And white Christianity fears color, migration and complexity-the very things that built America. For them “Muslim” is the great enemy who took Jerusalem away from Christians and Jews. Mamdani’s victory is thus not a municipal event; it is a mythic disruption. What bothers people even more is that Mamdani refuses to fit into neat boxes. He campaigns with gay, lesbian and trans groups. His partner doesn’t wear a hijab. He is comfortable in queer spaces and openly progressive. So, what kind of Muslim is he? A devout one? A cultural one? Or an unbeliever with Muslim heritage? Even his co-religionists are confused. Many left-wing Muslim sympathizers claim to be progressive but remain proudly homophobic “because Allah demanded so”. Yet Mamdani’s life mocks that contradiction. He acts as if faith and freedom can coexist-a thought too heretical for both Islamists and Christian fundamentalists. When asked what he would do after his victory, his rivals said they would visit Israel to thank God. Mamdani said he would stay in New York and do his job. That one sentence separated performative faith from professional integrity. To better understand Mamdani, we must go beyond theology and look at caste and commerce. His surname reveals his roots: Gujarat. Specifically, the Khoja world-mercantile Muslim communities that trace descent from the Prophet through the Shia line but function socially like Hindu caste trade guilds. These groups originated when sea trade was booming around 1000 AD with Fatimid Egypt, and around 1600 AD with Safavid Persia, both Shia empires. These unique trade groups, with a religious head binding them together, make sense if we appreciate how caste groups of Bharat responded to Islam after its rise and spread, 1,400 years ago. This is when Mecca became a major hub of trade connecting the sea from Arabia to Java. India stood in the middle. The monsoon winds favored this trade. Hindus and Jains avoided travelling by sea, for fear of loss of caste. But a few Gujarati trading guilds realized that they could remain community loyal even if they converted provided they were guided by a guru-like figure with connections to the prophet. Thus rose the Khojas and the Bohras. Theoretically, Islam believes all humans are equal. But like all religions there are divisions and boundaries, controlled by who marries whom. Simplistically put, the first split happened shortly after the death of the founder-prophet who did not leave behind a will or sons. So Islam split into the Arab (Sunni) and Persian (Shia) schools-the former claiming consensus should determine leadership of the Islamic world, the latter preferring bloodline, through the prophet’s grandsons born to his daughter. The Shia group is split further. The Twelvers who believe the twelfth Imam remains hidden and will reveal himself at the end of time. The Bohras and Khojas however insist their respective leaders are Imams with a continuous bloodline. But the American media doesn’t care for these details. To them, every Muslim is an “Islamist”. The subtleties of sect, history, or geography vanish. Mamdani thus becomes a cartoon villain: a bearded Muslim who somehow survived liberal America’s tolerance tests. The Khojas and Bohras evolved from old gana-sangha traditions-republican merchant orders from Buddha’s time. They had their own systems of law, credit and charity, independent of kings and clerics. Mobility was their weapon. When trade dried up, they simply migrated: from Gujarat to Zanzibar, from Africa to London, and now to New York. They owed allegiance not to a nation but to a network. Mamdani inherits that legacy of cosmopolitan capitalism-pragmatic, mobile and skeptical of rigid authority. Incidentally, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, came from the same Khoja lineage (both publicly claimed to be Twelver though). Jinnah’s ancestors were Gujarati Hindus, probably from the Lohana caste, who turned to Islam when they were expelled from their guilds for trading in forbid den goods like fish. Even at his death, nobody knew whether Jinnah was Sunni or Shia. Both sects claimed him, each performing its own funeral rites. That ambiguity, born of Gujarati mercantile pragmatism, defines the global Muslim elite-from Karachi to Kampala to Queens.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: How did you prepare the big news of the week? There was much news. But let’s narrow it down to a few. The Jacobin leftist Zohran Mamdani’s political victory over the ashes of what had been the Democrat Party, propelled by the Angry White Women vote. The Angry White Women Leftists, often referred to as AWFLS, have appetite and a well developed sense of entitlement. Though they and their male partners are well educated in obscure subjects, they don’t have real financially marketable skills. They know DEI bureaucracy and DEI slogans, but they can’t fix a leaky toilet or repair an electric socket. They can’t earn an honest dollar so they reach for politics to take what they want. My friend the astute writer Michael Ledwith is also fascinated by these AWFLS, who provide anger, backbone and the necessary cruelty to what we are now experiencing as American Communism. They are what we call Karens. He sent me this passage from George Orwell’s “1984.” “It was always the women, and above all the young ones, who were the most bigoted adherents of the Party, the swallowers of slogans, the amateur spies and nosers-out of unorthodoxy.” It explains a lot, Ledwith said. And I think of AOC and her posse of AWFLS, searching for heretics, sharpening her knife, and I hope she doesn’t find them. Because they don’t have the money to live in New York at the standard they expect to live, they demand that Zohran give them “free stuff” and call it “affordability.” They feel betrayed by the establishment because they can no longer pay for what they desire. They want to live large as befits what they think is their station. And he’s promised to use other people’s money until that’s gone and the roof caves in, as it always does. And the other big news (to me, at least) are the revelations that Democrat Deep State prosecutorial zealot Jack Smith–the javert of the new left–had hoped to prosecute “the entire Republican political apparatus” for the crime of being conservative. How did we get here? As always the dried bones of political failure have lined this road over the decades: The failure of the political establishment is the foundation of the Mamdani rise. And what did the Democrat establishment offer in New York? A tired cynical Cuomo known for feeding grandmothers in nursing homes to the pandemic, and slapping fannies and otherwise sexually harassing young women. Democrats were as exhausted as he was. And they offered a charismatic figure in Mamdani, and if he orders them to the killing fields at some future date, he wasn’t a tired Democrat hack like Cuomo. The leftist Democrats who bowed to the radical communists like Mandami enjoy talking of diversity up until the moment they hang you for speaking your mind. I’m conservative. I really don’t think a trip to prison would change my mind about the leftists who have destroyed my hometown of Chicago and have now ruined New York. You might have watched panel discussion shows—those panels of experts and witty pundits with perfect teeth–selected to reflect your politics like so many of those bobble head dogs that people place in their cars. It is amusing to watch them cast about for consensus if one hasn’t yet been formed. But bobble heads—even pretty ones—don’t quite get you there. So how did I prepare for Mamdani, especially as Democrats worried about the angry left and the political guillotine of the leftists express no desire to end their shut-down of the federal government? Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) said that Democrat fear of their own won’t allow them to reopen the government. “Because they’re afraid of facing the guillotine of the radical left. And who are the radical left? They are the people who would prefer to use taxpayer dollars to pay for health care for illegal immigrants than to pay for the men and women who keep us safe.” Guillotine, fear of the unleashed mob? I looked for my old copy of Edmund Burke’s “Reflections on the Revolution in France” It’s old. It’s affordable in paperback. It was written by a conservative. And I like it. But it has one serious drawback: It is a book. A book on paper, and this, by definition, takes effort to digest. It is not like sitting with the bobbleheads. But it does involve the Reign of Terror propelled by the Jacobin revolutionary Maximilien Robespierre. France spilled its own blood from September 1793 and into July 1794. In the Reign of Terror, some 17,000 French citizens were executed at the guillotine. Another 10,000 died in prison without trial. Among them were thousands of executed priests caught up in the Jacobin De-Christianization of France, as churches were shuttered and winemakers, shopkeepers, supporters of the king and queen were executed. Everyone and anyone could be suspected, and sent to the guillotine to the jeers of the filthy mob. It wasn’t Portland or Chicago, it was Paris. Family members accused each other as not being supportive enough of the revolution, terrified they would themselves be accused. And they were killed. And the guillotine kept falling again and again and again. For those who are afraid of reading, I leave this short video, narrated by a man with an English accent. Why? There’s nothing like an English accent to perpetuate a sense of historical authority. Fittingly, it even claimed Robespierre. Who reminds us of Robespierre today? I think of the Jacobin Democrats Adam Schiff, John Brennan of the CIA, or perhaps the imperious James Comey who destroyed the credibility of the FBI. You can see how frightened they are. Brennan is snarling the way a frightened dog snarls at the approach of a predator. At any event, the executions in France continued until finally, Napoleon became dictator of all of France and personally controlled the media and told the newspapers what to print. Now it’s New York Mayor Elect Zorhan Mamdani’s turn to play the Jacobin with his billionaire friends. His voters don’t read history. They have “feelings.” They are sentimental, emotional and thus easily manipulated, demanding “free stuff” and this leads to disaster. Soros has his meat puppet. He doesn’t need the clumsy barbarian in Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson. He’s already got Chicago, and much of the media. It’s not only Chicago and New York. The left is ascendant, full of confidence and oh so violent. The Democrat embrace of the assassination culture continued after the assassination of Christian activist Charlie Kirk. They marched in lock step in support of their candidate in Virginia who fantasized about murdering his opponents and killing the opponent’s children. It was Virginia Democrats who revenged themselves on Republican delegate Carrie Coyner, the Virginia Republican who revealed violent texts sent to her by Jay Jones. He expresses fantasies of murdering children and now is the chief law enforcement officer of the commonwealth that produced George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Senior Virginia Democrats like Sen. Tim Kaine supported and embraced Jay Jones. The media, which has for decades protected leftist outrage, did its job. So how did we get here? As always, the establishment failed, and legitimate concerns about cost of living were ignored. And the Bolsheviks offered a charismatic leader with plenty of charm. And now they bathe in their feelings, and think about the great future ahead of them, as they reach for power over the rest of us. And you’re surprised that I would compare today’s American Democrats to the murderous Jacobins of 18th Century France? I don’t take guillotines to protests in American cities, but they do. In Chicago, New York, Portland, Los Angeles, every place where the Democrats feel strong. The rest of us? We pray for their reign of terror to end.)

Most of my immediate and extended family are here. Every Sunday we gather in my aunt’s downtown apartment for family dinner. I don’t fly home for Thanksgiving or Christmas. I take the F train to my cousin’s house in Brooklyn. My family has been here for generations. Heck, my paternal grandmother was even stabbed here in 1961. Many tourists might see the city as merely a backdrop to film social media content or catch a Broadway show. But it’s also a place to maintain roots and raise families. And, yes, struggle to survive. I truly worry that, under Mamdani, our city — which is still emerging from its pandemic stupor — will be pulled back into an abyss of chaos and crime. I fret that businesses which no longer need to be here to remain competitive will leave and take loads of tax dollars — and jobs — with them. I also pray that Albany will spoil Mamdani’s plans for grabbing other people’s money. If all the sensible people flee, we are just handing over the keys to Mamdani — the pretty face of an ugly movement. He is a Trojan horse for the Democratic Socialists of America and their pernicious anti-Western agenda. His very dark victory speech, in which he lectured us on Islamophobia and boasted about big government, was chilling. Data shows loads of young, educated transplants voted for Mamdani — because of his pie-in-the-sky promises to freeze rents and deliver them all the trappings of success for a discounted price. (FROM THE ARTICLE: As per the New York Assembly website, Mamdani attended the Bronx High School of Science. He graduated from Bowdoin College with a Bachelor’s degree in African Studies. Interestingly, both his parents are Harvard graduates. CNN reported that Mamdani was politically active in his college years. While at Bowdoin College, he founded the institution’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine. He also joined Change Corps, which was a year-long training program for becoming a community organizer. However, he did not finish his term, quitting after six months. The reason for this move was his creation of a union within this organization, which, he thought, would have led to his being fired. Mamdani became a naturalized citizen in 2018, paving the way for his active involvement in politics. This has now culminated in him becoming New York’s first Muslim mayor, and one of the youngest to take that office.)
