— Illinois GOP facing dire financial straits – Rich Miller
https://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/jb-pritzker-campaign-spending-democrats-illinois-republicans-dire-financial-straits/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Democratic Party of Illinois ended the year with about $1.4 million in the bank. The Illinois Republican Party finished with $313,000. The IL GOP is going to have to be frugal for a while until they can raise some dough. Rauner has been the state GOP’s most reliable donor. The former governor contributed $36.9 million to the state party since June 13th of 2014. The party raised another $20 million or so on top of that since that same date, but a large chunk of that money was pass-through cash from the two legislative caucuses for direct mail costs. The unofficial leader of the Republican Party’s wealthy Chicago-area “donor class” was Ron Gidwitz. He helped raise a ton of money for his party over the years. But Gidwitz is now the US Ambassador to Belgium, so he can’t do them any good. Bottom line: The Republican Party in this state is in very dire straits.)

DUPAGE POLICY JOURNAL
— Wheaton Bowl owner Sal Falbo says he was targeted by Council candidate Bray-Parker – Glenn Minnis (DIERSEN: In 2002, I succeeded in getting the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) to hold its monthly meetings in the Wheaton Bowl Banquet Hall and the MTRCC has held its monthly meetings there ever since.)
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511739295-wheaton-bowl-owner-says-he-was-targeted-by-council-candidate-bray-parker
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sal Falbo thinks Erica Bray-Parker could use a new lesson plan. “I don’t think her actions were the right thing to be teaching her students,” Falbo told the DuPage Policy Journal as rumors of Bray-Parker’s attempting to bully him and other business owners in Wheaton into removing signs from their properties that were for political candidates she doesn’t agree with continue to swirl. “We all have a right to freedom of speech, and as a teacher you would think she would know and understand that,” he added. According to local business owner Jane Shaw, all the drama began when Bray-Parker, who teaches at Glenbard North and is an instructor at the Civics Club, penned a letter to Falbo and other local business owners demanding that they remove posters of former state Rep. Jeanne Ives, a Republican of Wheaton, from in front of their businesses, vowing never to return to their establishments if they failed to comply. Bray-Parker, who is running for Wheaton City Council in District 4, is also accused of using her students as part of her “bullying” campaign, Shaw added. “I don’t live in Wheaton but if I did there’s no way I would vote for her,” said Faldo, part owner of Wheaton Bowl. “She’s obviously an activist, but part of the responsibility in that is understanding that everyone has the same free speech rights that you do. On top of that, the signs she was complaining about weren’t even on my property; they were in front. She’s really made an issue out of a nonissue.” Meanwhile, Ives, who relinquished her seat in Springfield with the start of the legislative session, has been adamant in expressing her opinion that she doesn’t think what she calls Bray-Parker’s brand of politics is right for Wheaton. “Erica Bray-Parker should not be elected; make sure she isn’t,” she told the DuPage Policy Journal. “She is unfit to represent business owners and the respectful, hard-working taxpayers of Wheaton. She is a civics teacher who is not civil.” Bray-Parker also raised eyebrows in May 2018, when she penned a letter in the Daily Herald assailing Peter Breen, a Republican of Lombard who was a state representative at the time, over what she perceived to be his inadequate stance on the issue of gun control.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— McGlasson discouraged by lack of response to meeting request – W.J. Kennedy (DIERSEN: What do the following have to say about this: your Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain, the officers of your Republican township, ward, and/or county party organizations, your representative on the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee, the IRP officers, the IRP National Committeeman, and the IRP National Committeewoman?)
https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511740588-mcglasson-discouraged-by-lack-of-response-to-meeting-request
(FROM THE ARTICLE: All that Republican Committeeman John McGlasson says he is likely to get out of his call for a special meeting of the state GOP after the shellacking the party took in November is a chance to speak his mind at the party’s regularly scheduled meeting on Feb. 9 in Bolingbrook. If he can make his way onto the agenda. “Never heard back from anyone,” McGlasson, referring to his request for a special meeting, told Prairie State Wire. “I’m completely discouraged. I’ll try to give my viewpoints at the regular party meeting, if I get a chance.” The conservative McGlasson, committeeman from the 16th Congressional District, seconded fellow Committeeman’s Sean Morrison’s call for a special meeting after the embarrassing revelation in mid-December that Bruce Rauner sought someone to take his place on the ballot soon after his near loss to former State Rep. Jeanne Ives, a Republican of Wheaton, in the March primary. Again, he heard nothing. “We should be out looking hard for someone to challenge (U.S. Senator Dick) Durbin in 2020,” he said. “A good, enthusiastic candidate will help other candidates in down-ticket races. Maybe we could take a few of the House seats back. But they seem to be content with the way things are.” McGlasson needs five of the 18 Republican Central Committee members to call a special meeting of the party. He says with Bob Winchester’s legal claim for his Committee spot in the 15th Congressional District still in legal limbo, he doesn’t have them. “It is my opinion that the party needs to return to its roots as expressed in our party platform,” he said. “And we need to search for a leader that will lead us back to the basics of conservatism.” McGlasson said that a move is on to have Ives speak in Bolingbrook, but she told the Prairie State Wire that she has yet to receive an invitation. “I would tell them that they are disorganized and rudderless,” Ives said. “We need a fiscal contract with Illinoisans and a strategy to carry it out.” “We need new leadership,” she added, “after that bloodbath in November, and (the) revelation about Rauner. They (party leaders) can’t claim ignorance about that. He’s been funding the party for years.”)

— There was chatter at last week’s inauguration that Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s management and media style can be compared to another governor—Republican Jim Thompson. “Thompson would walk down in the press room and have a few beers with us and try to get to know us casually,” recalled Thom Serafin, a public affairs strategist who worked as a reporter back in the day. “He was good at dealing with people. A lot like Bill Clinton. He’d look you in the eye. You’d feel like he’s really interested in what you have to say. That’s a gift Jim Thompson had, and I see it in J.B.” Pritzker so far seems willing to keep an open line of communication with media. We’ll have to wait and see if he’s ready to have a beer with us. Big Jim Thompson, as he was known, attended Pritzker’s swearing in. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Mistake # 3 Left The College Graduation Year Off Or Fudged It Some job hunters removed the graduation date thinking employers can figure out their age. Omitting your year of college graduation was a concern for Lizzie Rahm, HR Senior Manager and Recruiter, Clark Nuber PS who noted that employers may wonder if you had ever finished your degree if they saw no graduation date. Another worry is that a third of all job applicants lie about their education (see the Career Builder study), and when I mention this to Ms. Rahm, she quickly stated that her organization does a background check on every single person they make a job offer to. So if you are lying about the year you earned a degree to appear younger, it will come out. And if you claimed to have a degree that you don’t, that will be in the background report too. The result of lying to this employer is they will terminate your job offer. “There are so many background check companies out there now,” cautions Rahm “that many employers are doing thorough background checks on new hires, so job hunters definitely need to use integrity in creating their resume.”)

Before 2019, the federal government experienced more than a dozen shutdowns and funding gaps of varying lengths and with varying impacts. While the federal government went more than a decade without a shutdown in the early 2000s, they happened almost annually during the Carter presidency, and there were six during Reagan’s presidency. In the early 1980s, opinions by then-Attorney General Benjamin Civiletti altered the impact of lawmakers’ failure to pass new spending bills. Prior to that, shutdowns did not always entail an actual stop to government functioning, according to the Associated Press, and they were “simply funding gaps with little real-world effect.” Here’s a look back at shutdowns since 1990:)

DUPAGE POLICY JOURNAL
— Ives charges Bray-Parker with bullying – Glenn Minnis
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511739013-ives-charges-bray-parker-with-bullying
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Former state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton says Erica Bray-Parker does not deserve to represent that city. “Erica Bray-Parker should not be elected; make sure she isn’t,” Ives told the DuPage Policy Journal of the Glenbard North teacher and Civics Club instructor now running for Wheaton City Council in District 4. “She is unfit to represent business owners and the respectful, hard-working taxpayers of Wheaton. She is a civics teacher who is not civil.” Indeed, Bray-Parker’s campaign has recently been dogged by controversy, with local business owner Jane Shaw telling the DuPage Policy Journal of rumors she heard about Bray-Parker bullying local business owners into taking down the signs of candidates she doesn’t support. The veteran educator is also accused of having manipulated her students into aiding her and her campaign. Ives argues Bray-Parker is all about special interests, warning voters that if she is elected they face additional taxes, being told what to do with their property and some form of censorship. “Churches beware too, as she has opinions, apparently, about which views of Christianity are best,” Ives added. “When your church wants to expand, would she allow a zoning change or block it with her vote?” Finally, Ives charges Bray-Parker is more than willing to run roughshod over “our Constitutional and God-given natural rights,” adding she thinks Bray-Parker has not shown herself to be inclusive in the least. “Fortunately, the business owner at Wheaton Bowl (one of the owners Bray-Parker is accused of trying to strong-arm) refused to be bullied by her,” she added. “Other businesses, I am told, cowered to her demands—which is why everyone should frequent Wheaton Bowl and tell them you appreciate their common sense and decency.” Ives urged voters to take to the polls in April to reject what she called Bray-Parker’s brand of politics. “There are two seats up for Wheaton City Council at-large,” she said. “Running against ((Bray-)Parker are Suzanne Fitch and Ron Almiron. They have my support and will receive my vote.)

January 20 Morning Edition

LISLE TOWNSHIP REPUBLICAN ORGANIZATION
— The Lisle Township Republican Organization is outraged by recent comments made by our newly elected State Representative Anne Stava-Murray. Impugning the residents of Naperville who have worked tirelessly to make Naperville a great place to live for people of all races and religions is reprehensible. Rep. Anne Stava-Murray’s baseless attacks on Naperville highlight her lack of interest in serving her constituents. She has stated that she is already running for another office even before she begins her term in the General Assembly. If she is so disinterested in serving and holds her constituents in such disdain she should resign and let someone who wants to work for all the residents be the State Representative from the 81st District. On behalf of her constituents and all the residents of the City of Naperville, we demand an apology from Rep. Stava-Murray and call on her colleagues in the General Assembly to publicly
censure her extremist attacks. – Jay Fisher, Chairman, LTRO

SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
— Springfield police set to start camera program with public – Crystal Thomas
https://www.sj-r.com/news/20190119/springfield-police-set-to-start-camera-program-with-public
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Springfield will soon join several Illinois cities that have a voluntary program in which residents can register their private cameras to help out police. Police Chief Kenny Winslow told the City Council this past week that the registration will be available through the Springfield Police Department’s website in February. Residents who own private exterior cameras would enter information, like their address and a way to contact them, into a portal on the website. That information would be uploaded into a spreadsheet, which would plot all of the registered private security cameras on a map. Police officers would have access to this information and would be able to contact camera owners afterward if a crime occurred nearby. “We can send an alert via email or have detectives just call,” Winslow said. Winslow said the camera owners would be able to send in the footage through evidence.com, which is an encrypted hosting site that the city already uses. Or, a police officer could review the footage with the homeowner. Winslow said police are more likely to apprehend a suspect if they get information quickly after a crime. Plus, Winslow said the camera network could act as a deterrent to crime happening in the first place. “It will hopefully lead to more investigatory leads on crimes, or hopefully a better apprehension rate or maybe even a reduction (in crime),” Winslow said. “We just have to figure it out how to better market it to have good participation.”)

The three sisters, the “infernal goddesses” of ancient mythology born from the blood shed by Uranus when he was castrated by his son, were known for relentlessly hounding men. But the Furies took vengeance on wicked men who hurt women and swore false oaths. So I took it as a compliment. The capital has suddenly been infused with the spirit of the Furies. GAINESVILLE TIMES
— How younger generations get their news and why that matters – Shannon Casas (DIERSEN: Facebook is a Democrat/Libertarian/Green/RINO website. Those who run Facebook want those who are religious, conservative, and/or Republican to lose. Nevertheless, ever-increasingly, and outrageously, religious, conservative, and Republican activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. rely on Facebook to communicate. Ever-increasingly, they erroneously assume that if they post something on Facebook, everyone will see it. Ever-increasingly, they stop publishing websites, stop updating their websites, and stop sending out emails. That is exactly what Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, and RINOs want them to do.)
https://www.gainesvilletimes.com/columnists/shannon-casas-how-younger-generations-get-their-news-and-why-matters/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A little more than 10 years ago, distributing news by way of Facebook, Snapchat or any other social media was unheard of; it’s one of the most transformational shifts in the way we consume news. And it’s a driving force in how vastly different news consumption habits are and will be for millennials and younger. Older generations seek out news, for example setting aside time to read the morning paper, while millennials’ are more likely to bump into a story on social media. They don’t necessarily spend less time reading news. Some 85 percent of them report that keeping up with news is at least somewhat important to them and 69 percent get news daily, according to the American Press Institute. But they consume that news throughout their day across multiple platforms — a click on a Facebook link here, viewing an Instagram post there, watching a video on YouTube their friend shared, and so forth. And the large majority of it is done on their cellphones. I’ll point out here that much of this column was tapped out on my phone. “News and information are woven into an often continuous but mindful way that Millennials connect to the world generally, which mixes news with social connection, problem solving, social action, and entertainment,” according to the American Press Institute research. This trend continues with the next generation, those born after 1995: “Media consumption for Gen Z’s is embedded in their daily lives so they are not even consciously making a decision to consume content,” according to a Forbes article.)

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT GAZETTE
— Age discrimination: a moral embarrassment – HELAINE OLEN (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, Republicans, Whites, men, and non-veterans should be advised that they will be flushed down the toilet if they are not earning at least $100,000/year by age 25, $200,000/year by age 30, $300,000/year by age 35, $400,000/year by age 40, $500,000/year by age 45, $600,000/year by age 50, $700,000/year by age 55, $800,000/year by age 60, $900,000/year by age 65, and $1,000,000 year by age 70.)
https://www.nwaonline.com/news/2019/jan/20/age-discrimination-a-moral-embarassment/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When you dive into popular literature on retirement, you could be forgiven for thinking there are hordes of Americans in their late 50s or early 60s desperate to leave the paid workforce as soon as they can. Blog posts and academic studies beg people to hold off on collecting Social Security until the age of 70 so they can maximize their benefits. There is Bloomberg Businessweek’s article “Not prepared for retirement? Here’s a solution. Don’t retire.” And Inc.’s “Want to Retire Early? Here are 3 Reasons You Probably Shouldn’t.” Few listen. The most common age to file for Social Security is 62. Why? Well, many of these people are not downscaling their professional lives or exiting the workforce entirely because they want to do so. They are likely victims of age discrimination. That’s the searing conclusion that can be drawn from a recently released joint Urban Institute-ProPublica analysis of data from the Social Security Administration and National Institute on Aging’s joint longitudinal Health and Retirement Study. The researchers behind the report found a majority of workers over the age of 50 are likely at some point to be shoved out of their jobs, either via an overt firing or resignation under pressure of demotions, loss of future benefits or deteriorating work conditions. The damage to their bottom line is often permanent. When many find new positions, they are often jobs that are significantly below both their skill levels and previous pay grades, such as the former corporate executive ProPublica discovered working at a print shop, as a bartender, and staffing the front desk at a local gym. Making matters worse: The retirement prospects for many younger baby boomers and members of Generation X look dismal as the shift from workplace pensions to the do-it-yourself 401(k) has left millions of people without the resources to maintain even a semblance of their current lifestyle in retirement. As a result, surveys say a majority of Americans plan to work well past the traditional retirement age, with many claiming they will collect a paycheck till they drop.)

https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511723792-stava-murray-says-naperville-has-white-supremacist-policies
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Just days into her new job as a state representative, Anne Stava-Murray (D-Naperville) has managed to cause a stir among her constituents by characterizing her hometown of Naperville as having “white supremacist policies.” Her remarks about Naperville came in a Facebook response to a post by Felicia Palumbo, who in early January wrote that “Naperville is the biggest bullies … horrible.” “I know and I am so sorry,” Stava-Murray replied on her “Anne Stava-Murray for U.S. Senate” Facebook page. “I actually wanted to move to Oak Park but stayed to work on my community. Our history of white supremacist policies is ongoing.” Stava-Murray did not respond to multiple requests from the DuPage Policy Journal seeking substantiation for her comments—any evidence that Naperville ever, or currently has, white supremacist policies. A white supremacist Naperville was news to Mayor Steve Chirico. “I would never characterize Naperville in this way,” Chirico told the Policy Journal, “but I realize that people have many different perceptions and views.” Twenty-three-year Naperville resident Richard Strawbridge said he couldn’t imagine where Stava-Murray’s comments were coming from. “I’m unaware of any so-called white supremacist policies,” Strawbridge, an attorney, said, “and I’m very active in the local community. “In fact,” he continued, “my impression is that the Naperville community as a whole tries to be very fair and inclusive. Are there individual idiots out there who buck this trend? I’m guessing there are. But to paint the entire community with this broad and defamatory characterization is unworthy of a public official in the absence of some actual evidence. These kinds of comments from any part of the political spectrum only serve to divide people and to impeded constructive dialogue.” Stava-Murray is expected to appear, with other members of the General Assembly, at a legislative forum hosted by the Naperville Area Homeowners Confederation on Saturday at the Naperville Municipal Center. “Every January, we invite our local state senators and representatives to share their views on what we can expect from Springfield in the upcoming year,” an announcement of the event on the Homeowners website said. “With representatives from both sides of the political aisle, and several new faces, this should be a great opportunity to get to better know those who hold our statewide future in their hands.” The 32-year-old freshman lawmaker also announced before even being sworn in as a House member representing the 81st District that she would challenge U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin for his seat in 2020. She supports the full range of progressive causes, according to her Senate campaign website. That includes Medicare-For-All, “actually affordable healthcare reform that doesn’t give away money to for-profit millionaires” and Wear Red for Ed, Families, “proper education funding that doesn’t result in mass striking for teachers to receive basic resources.” She also endorses “providing support for the LGBTQIA community as they have among the highest rates of being murdered by a member of the public.” In November, Stava-Murray defeated incumbent David Olsen (R-Downers Grove) in a close race. The 81st District includes parts of Bolingbrook, Darien, Downers Grove, Naperville and Woodridge.)

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/page/ct-perspec-page-donald-trump-news-anxiety-vladimir-putin-shutdown-0116-20190115-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: What can we do about “news anxiety,” which many in the psychiatric community say is a real malady, particularly in recent years? If you feel afflicted by it, mental health professionals advise limiting news or social media exposure, especially of the more sensational anxiety-inducing sort. Psychologist Deborah Serani of Adelphi University, writing in Psychology Today, advised steering yourself away from sensational headlines and cable TV news and toward stories that offer depth, explanations and possible solutions to problems at hand. That’s healthy advice. After reporting the latest scandal or atrocity, it is reassuring to know that there is a rational path out of the problem at hand, if only we can persuade our political leaders to follow it.)

Employers can exploit citizens of foreign countries much easier than they can exploit citizens of America.)

— BEYOND DISGUSTING, BEYOND OUTRAGEOUS: E-Verify absent from immigration policy talks – S.A. Miller (DIERSEN: To oppose E-Verify is to oppose enforcement of America’s immigration laws. To oppose E-Verify is to shout a) that you are a Democrat or a Democrat plant, a Libertarian or a Libertarian plant, a Green or a Green plant, or a RINO and b) that you are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
https://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/jan/15/e-verify-absent-from-immigration-policy-talks/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: E-Verify has existed since 1996 and is mandatory in eight states. A 2016 study published in the IAZ Journal of Development and Migration found reduced numbers of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally in states with mandatory E-Verify. “E-Verify is a much more efficient way to achieve the goals that are claimed for the border wall,” said Edwin Rubenstein, chief researcher for the nonpartisan Negative Population Growth. An estimated 11.3 million immigrants live in the U.S. illegally with about 8 million working, accounting for about 5 percent of the workforce, according to a 2016 analysis by the Pew Research Center. Compared to their share of the workforce, immigrants living in the U.S. illegally were overrepresented in the agriculture (17 percent) and construction (13 percent) sectors, and in the leisure and hospitality industry (9 percent), the center found. The Chamber of Commerce dropped its opposition to E-Verify in 2013 but only with the stipulation that current employees be exempt. The agriculture industry’s reliance on labor from immigrants living in the U.S. illegally has long kept farm state Republicans from backing mandatory E-Verify without a major expansion of guest worker programs. The farm lobby was divided last year when mandatory E-Verify was included in a House GOP package of immigration reforms, the Securing America’s Future Act. The bill was defeated 192-231, with 41 Republicans joining every Democrat in voting no. While making his border security pitch Monday to the American Farm Bureau Foundation’s annual convention in New Orleans, Mr. Trump stressed that a border wall wouldn’t keep out seasonal workers. “I’m going to make that easier for them to come in and to work the farms,” he said. “But we’re keeping the wrong ones out, OK?” But he’s not talking about E-Verify the way he did on the 2016 campaign trail, when he pledged to “strengthen and expand” the program. With Mr. Trump in the White House, the system has gotten short shrift. It was left out of Mr. Trump’s “four pillars” plan to combat illegal immigration. Only a handful of the 565 companies in the Trump Organization, the president’s business empire, have signed up to use E-Verify, according to a Washington Times analysis. At times, Democrats touted E-Verify as a solution. Mr. Schumer last week listed E-Verify among the top measures for border security that he said were “ironically” suspended during the partial government shutdown. “Border patrol agents are going without pay, E-Verify is off-line, immigration cases are on hold, new immigration judges are not being hired,” he said. In 2009, Mr. Schumer said a “biometric-based employer verification system with tough enforcement and auditing is necessary to significantly diminish the job magnet that attracts illegal aliens to the United States.”)

ROLL CALL
— House moves to protect federal interns from harassment and discrimination (DIERSEN: Were you an intern? GAO audits IRS. When I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, my Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinated did not want me to transfer, but failing that, they wanted me to transfer as a GS-4 Step 1 (currently $32,978/year) intern, that is, to suffer a $58,902/year (64%) pay cut in today’s dollars. They painted what GAO Analysts do as being a unique “trade or occupation.” They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, or veteran. They viciously demonized, denigrated, and condemned the fact a) that I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880/year, b) that much of what IRS Revenue Officers do is similar to what GAO Analysts do, c) that I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, d) that I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, and e) that I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul. They were furious that I transferred with me almost 12 years of federal seniority, 30 days of unused vacation days, and 130 unused sick days.)

— State Sen. Oberweis giving “serious thought” to challenging US Rep. Underwood
https://capitolfax.com/2019/01/11/state-sen-oberweis-giving-serious-thought-to-challenging-us-rep-underwood/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republicans are lining up to challenge Underwood. Matt Quigley, a 32-year-old Navy veteran and Republican from Naperville, already has announced his intention to run in 2020. State Sen. Jim Oberweis, a Sugar Grove Republican who has run for Congress, Senate and governor before, also is considering a bid. He said, “We’re giving it serious thought, yes.” “I don’t believe that Underwood represents the views of the majority of the people in the 14th Congressional District,” said the dairy magnate, who said he would make a decision in 30 to 60 days. “I believe I would be much closer to those views.” Underwood beat a sitting Republican congressman by 5 points last November. She’s no slouch. And Oberweis will be a 74-year-old “career politician” (or, at least, “career candidate”) by 2020 with a whole lot of votes under his belt. Even so, Gov. Bruce Rauner won the 14th CD by almost 8 points. The only statewide Democrats who won it were Jesse White (+23) and Susana Mendoza (+2). Other possibles include state Rep. Allen Skillicorn (R-East Dundee), which could be why he’s been holding so many press conferences lately. Plenty of rumors about a few others.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/posteverything/wp/2019/01/11/feature/why-is-congress-so-dumb/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Our decay as an institution began in 1995, when conservatives, led by Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), carried out a full-scale war on government. Gingrich began by slashing the congressional workforce by one-third. He aimed particular ire at Congress’s brain, firing 1 of every 3 staffers at the Government Accountability Office, the Congressional Research Service and the Congressional Budget Office. He defunded the Office of Technology Assessment, a tech-focused think tank. Social scientists have called those moves Congress’s self-lobotomy, and the cuts remain largely unreversed.)

https://wealthyretirement.com/slap-in-the-face/drawbacks-financial-independence-retire-early-thinking/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: What in the name of God are you supposed to do for the next 50 or 60 years if you retire in your 30s? I’m ahead of myself here, but this just sounds so incredibly immature and badly thought out that I kind of lost control for a second. Let’s skip over the fact that living a life of “carefree bliss” – that’s what one successful FIRE advocate called it – is absurd. I say that because every person I have ever known who left the real world too early – either because of an inheritance or because they built the resources on their own to allow them to do that – went back to work out of self-preservation or looked like hell a few years into their “bliss.” For the vast majority, it doesn’t work. People need a challenge. They need structure. They need a reason to get up in the morning other than kayaking and rock climbing.)
