She writes that for healthy people in their 60s, retirements can last 30 years. So, how far do we have to go to meet her goals? When are we retiring now? Good Question. According to the U.S. Census, the average American retires at age 63. That’s up from age 62 in 1997. So what’s changed? “Our culture has changed, our concept of independence has changed and the cost of living has changed,” Ernie Owens, a professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Business said. Owens says back in the 1970s and early 80s, many families relied on one income and a pension. The concept of the 401(k) then took over which meant more people had to rely on putting away the savings themselves. At the same time, health care costs have increased, people are living longer, healthier lives and some are choosing to stay on in the workforce. “The attitude toward work has changed,” Owens says. “A lot of people want to work because it’s something to do, it gives them worth.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 32 percent of Americans age 65-69 were employed at least part time. And for Americans between age 70-74, workforce participation was 19 percent. But, just because people want to work doesn’t mean they can. According to the Aegon Retirement Readiness Survey 2017, 61 percent of Americans say they retired sooner than planned. They cites bad health, unemployment and family responsibilities as the top three reasons.)

Jeanne Ives, a three-term House member from west suburban Wheaton. She’s been the most visible voice of conservative anger over Rauner’s abandonment of a past pledge to veto legislation that allows public funding for abortions. Ives told WBEZ Monday she intends to announce an exploratory committee for governor this week and has gotten commitments of support from past Rauner donors. She also ridiculed Rauner’s campaign video: “To me, it didn’t matter what he said in that video. You can’t trust his word. Venture capitalist Rauner would have fired Rauner by now for failure to perform and for lying.” How hard is it to unseat a sitting Illinois governor in a primary? It’s beyond hard. And in recent political history, it’s been outright impossible. Going back to 1990, incumbent Illinois governors have been challenged four times in primaries. Each time, the challengers got clobbered. Protest votes against Republican Gov. Jim Edgar and Democratic Govs. Rod Blagojevich and Pat Quinn trended between 25 percent and 33 percent. As a candidate and as governor, Rauner had proposed cutting pension costs by transitioning workers to less generous benefit packages or 401(k)-style retirement plans. But past attempts to cut retirement costs have run up against legal problems. The Illinois Constitution stipulates that benefits cannot be “diminished or impaired” once they are bestowed to workers, and the state Supreme Court has stood by those words. The governor thinks Congress can release the state from that restriction by passing a law that would give states permission to come up with cost-saving changes to their pension programs. Bruce Rauner given the governor’s recent signature on a bill that expands the public funding of abortion, the congressman told POLITICO. Roskam, the Ways & Means Tax Policy chairman who is taking a lead role in an effort to overhaul the U.S. tax code, is the highest-ranking elected official in Illinois to potentially pull back from Rauner after the governor signed HB40. The new abortion law — which Rauner had promised to veto — has so infuriated conservatives, they are now talking about drafting a potential primary opponent to challenge Rauner. Roskam said Rauner’s move to sign the bill was “fundamentally out of step” with his congressional district. “I’ve got to reevaluate that and I’ll reevaluate that in the right time,” Roskam said Thursday when asked if he still supported Rauner. “Signing HB40 was a huge mistake on the policy and it was a huge mistake on the politics. The policy, this is the home of Henry Hyde, the author of the Hyde Amendment and I am his successor.” Roskam himself is facing a reelection challenge and Democrats are lining up to oppose him next year after Hillary Clinton won Roskam’s district in 2016 even as Roskam was reelected. “People have a wide range of views on the question of abortion, and right to life and so forth. But there’s a lot of agreement on this notion that taxpayers ought not to be compelled — and particularly in this environment — to pay for this,” Roskam said. “The politics are very challenging, I think. A big part of the coalition that elects Republicans is a pro-life constituency at a core and I think politics and policy make this error more and more glaring over time … It is a position fundamentally out of step with my constituency.” Is it a sign of a more sizable pulling away from Rauner? While Illinois’ Republican delegation jointly sent out a statement condemning Rauner’s action at the time of the bill signing, so far only Roskam has raised the possibility of withholding support. U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., said Thursday Rauner still had his backing. From a Davis spokesperson: “Congressman Davis is pro-life so he was obviously disappointed in Governor Rauner’s decision to sign HB 40 but he has worked with the governor on many issues beneficial to the 13th district and will continue to do so. Politics will play out but Congressman Davis will continue to work to improve the state of Illinois.” Other Republicans from the delegation — Darin LaHood and John Shimkus — did not respond to inquiries about whether they still stand behind Rauner.
