REPUBLICAN ASSEMBLY OF LAKE COUNTY
— Principles
http://ralc.biz/principles
(FROM THE STATEMENT: We have joined ourselves together within the Republican Party to achieve our common goals –To give definition and strength to the Conservative movement within these United States. In these, we proudly affirm our belief in the following principles: This nation was established by men humbly seeking the guidance of Almighty God. Our hope for God to bless our country exists only if we again seek his divine guidance. We support the United States Constitution in the tradition of the Founding Fathers as the Supreme law of the land. The power of the Federal Government and State must be strongly bound by the chains of the Constitution to allow maximum individual achievement through freedom. Our country is a sovereign nation. We must never compromise our national sovereignty to other nations, the United Nations, or any other world organization. Our foreign policy must always reflect our national self-interest and founding principles. Our Founding Fathers firmly held to the conviction that religious freedom was fundamental to a free society. We also express the conviction that we are a God-fearing people, according one another the equal right of religious freedom and acknowledging with reverence the duty of obedience to the will of God. Our state has sovereign authority to govern the land and people within our border. We will not abide usurpation of state sovereignty by Federal mandate or economic extortion. We believe that each of us should be free to achieve, or fail according to our individual abilities, without the need for governmental assistance or quotas.)
— Beliefs
http://ralc.biz/beliefs
(FROM THE STATEMENT: That all political power and influence should flow from the grassroots upward. That all human rights are granted by God, not government. Government exists primarily to protect the God-given rights of its citizens. That the Constitution was written by wise men under the inspiration of God and that the original intent of the Founders is as valid and binding today as it was in their day. That the Constitution was written to govern a moral and religious people and it is being destroyed by those who are neither. That the traditional family is the foundation and cornerstone of our society – and we will oppose any attempt to undermine or redefine the family unit. The sanctity of human life is paramount in any free society. The unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. This sacred right extends to all persons regardless of age or infirmity and also would not allow for euthanasia, assisted suicide, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning or public funding for any of these practices. That the Founders never intended to separate God from government but did intend to prevent government from establishing a single state religion or from inhibiting the citizen’s right to the free exercise of religion in any setting, public or private. That free market capitalism is the only economic system that creates the opportunities and incentives that will allow maximum productivity and prosperity for its citizens. It is the necessary partner of political freedom.)

http://peoriapublicradio.org/post/illinois-gop-says-conservative-moderate-share-leadership#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republican Party officials say they’ve reached an agreement to share leadership of the party, heading off a weekend fight between moderates and conservatives over who should be the next state GOP chairman. Conservatives were backing Lake County GOP Chairman Mark Shaw against Tim Schneider, the current state chairman hand-picked by Gov. Bruce Rauner. The election is scheduled for Saturday. In a news release late Tuesday, the party says Shaw and Schneider have agreed Schneider will continue as chairman while Shaw will be co-chairman, leading “conservative and grassroots outreach.” Shaw also will run Saturday for president of the Illinois Republican County Chairmen’s Association. Conservatives have been critical of Rauner’s actions on issues such as abortion and immigration, prompting state Rep. Jeanne Ives to challenge him in a closer-than-expected March primary. Ives said Wednesday she’s “guardedly optimistic” about the new arrangement but reserving judgement until it’s put into practice.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facing calls to resign over his handling of sexual harassment allegations within the party, Mike Madigan faced no opposition this year in being elected the longest-serving chairman of the Illinois Democratic Party. But after Gov. Bruce Rauner eked out a contentious and very narrow victory over state Rep. Jeanne Ives in the March primary, the Illinois Republican Party the GOP governor has bankrolled announced it would split leadership posts as a way to unify a political party that has seen its fair share of dissension.)

And there are also concerns about abortion. “We believe the ERA amendment is all about extending abortion right across the country where taxpayers have to fund it, at will, on demand,” said State Representative Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton. With concerns about taking any stand that might further anger his base this election year, Governor Rauner has refused to directly support the Amendment.)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— IL GOP HEADS MAKE DISAPPOINTING DEAL BEFORE SATURDAY’S STATE CENTRAL COMMITTEE VOTE
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2018/05/il-gop-heads-make-disappointing-deal-before-saturdays-state-central-committee-vote-.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Any chance the conservative wing of the Illinois Republican Party had to take over party leadership next Saturday has been dealt away, with an announcement from the party headquarters Wednesday. Governor Rauner’s pick Tim Schneider will remain the IL GOP State Chairman for another four years, and Lake County Chairman Mark Shaw will “co-chair” in a new position on the SCC. And everyone – the Rauner wing of the party and the IL GOP Platform wing will be happy and united …? . . . In other words, the IL GOP conservatives will return to their worker bee positions in the party apparatus – knocking on doors, making phone calls, canvassing voters – while the IL GOP Rauner-paid staff hive queen bees call the shots and make public policy with no regard whatsoever to the IL GOP Platform. That’s the way many are seeing their “compromise” – one the Rauner Wing was willing to initiate because the conservatives on the SCC were confident they had the votes to elect Mark Shaw as the new party chairman – taking the IL GOP in a direction that simply would not blend well with Governor Rauner’s checkbook and piper tunes. The SCC members that told Illinois Review they were confident that they had the votes for a party leadership upheaval backed off Wednesday. “Jeanne Ives made a good statement on this agreement this morning. My views are very similar to hers,” 17th CD SSC member Stan Bond said Wednesday. “This agreement will give conservatives a stronger voice within the ILGOP and additionally provides the County Chairmen a permanent seat and voice on the party’s executive committee which surprisingly they have not had up until now.” . . . It’s too bad Mr. Shaw didn’t see fit to fight for the takeover of the IL GOP – so that the state’s party would reflect the rest of the nation’s Republican stance and not continue in the failed Democrat-lite direction its leadership has been pursuing for years. Those conservatives that hold to conservative principles first and the Republican Party affiliation second have been left with no political home for this election cycle. That’s an ugly reality, and one that must be processed.)

— Trump convenes friendly Californians to rally opposition to sanctuary laws – Joe Garofoli
https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Trump-convenes-friendly-Californians-to-rally-12920663.php
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The GOP desperately needs the injection of energy in California. Democrats have targeted several of the 14 congressional seats now held by Republicans as part of their effort to win back the House. The two main Republicans running for governor, Travis Allen and John Cox, have seized on the issue in hopes that at least one of them will survive the June 5 top-two primary. Failing to field a candidate in the November runoff could depress Republican turnout throughout the state. Trump said opposition to the law in California “has sparked a rebellion.” Ten counties and three dozen cities have supported the administration’s anti-sanctuary stance, nearly all of them in conservative parts of Southern California and the Central Valley.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The nation’s most vulnerable incumbent was forced to partially cede control over his party’s operations this morning, as news broke Rauner’s hand-picked party chairman agreed to be a “co-chairman” to avoid a divisive party vote. Politico Illinois wrote Rauner’s bowing to reality shows “weakness” and would “never could have happened under Rauner two years ago.” But Rauner still has not solved his biggest problem — winning back state Representative Jeanne Ives and the 48% of Republicans that supported her. Ives was skeptical of today’s news, warning that if this was the “typical surrender Republican Rauner play of buying people off with money and titles, that would not be good.” Her statement also showed she was not involved in the deal. She told CLTV last week they still have not spoken. “Bruce Rauner is fighting for his political life and he only has himself blame,” said DGA Illinois Communications Director Sam Salustro. “Rauner still has to find a way to win back the 48% of Republicans that voted to throw him out two months ago, and the millions of Democrats and Independents that are tired of watching Illinois fall behind under his failed leadership.”)

They would find a) that my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) that my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) that my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968. They would find that I have been a Republican Precinct Committeeman since 1999 and the GOPUSA Illinois Editor since 2000. They would find that I am a Trump supporter, Protestant (baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, old (born in 1948), non-poor, gun owner, 100% German American, my ancestors have been in America since 1844, union member for almost 12 years, federal employee for almost 30 years, federal retiree for more than 20 years, childless, pet-less, American nameplate car owner, and even worse things. They would use the aforesaid to demonize, to denigrate, and to condemn me as being a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, bigot, and even worse things.)

— JANUARY 26, 2016 FLASHBACK: 600 ‘requests’ from Benghazi for better security: What this statistic really means – Glenn Kessler (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents hint/imply/argue/shout that there is no need for Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee (SCC) members to communicate with Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains directly because they communicate with a) Randy Pollard, the President of the Illinois Republican County Chairman’s Association, b) the chairmen of the Republican county/township/ward party organizations in their district, and c) the Republican elected officials in their district. However, far too often, far too many of the aforesaid fail/refuse to communicate with Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains. I should write a book about it. Far too often, far too many of them communicate only with those Republican Precinct Committeemen who a) glorify and praise them, b) pander to them, c) serve as their operative or dupe, and/or d) give them money.)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2016/01/26/600-requests-from-benghazi-for-better-security-what-this-statistic-really-means/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A key point that Republicans on the committee have tried to make was that Ambassador Chris Stevens — who perished in the 2012 attacks on U.S. facilities that left three others dead — did not directly communicate with Clinton on her private email system. (Generally, ambassadors would send messages through the chain of command.) So none of these came directly from Stevens to Clinton, “asking for help,” as Trump put it.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Nothing says classy quite like death. That is, dying in a way that gives back to others, whether that’s giving your possessions to charity or making your life’s accomplishments an example of what hard work and determination can earn. However, there’s one way we can all give back in death: ourselves. No, not in a metaphorical sense. Our bodies are rich in carbon, bacteria and other stuff that naturally decomposes into the environment with relative ease. That being said, it seems odd that to this day burial seems to be the preferred route of putting a loved one to eternal rest. Burial of an entire body in a metal and plastic coffin seems so off-putting and gaudy, not to mention contrary to the natural process of decomposition. While there are certain religious justifications, nonetheless the modern practice of burial is environmentally unfriendly and creates a future environmental crisis. Graveyards alone contain hundreds if not thousands of bodies, both subterranean and in mausoleums. With a large elderly and baby boomer population beginning to die off, many of these locations will be hard pressed to make room for more. The process, money and storage it takes to put the deceased in their own plot of land or on a marble shelf makes no sense. Furthermore, the resources that go into burials aren’t necessarily friendly to the earth. Since most coffins are made of plastic and varying metal alloys, they aren’t really known for their ability to break down. While the idea of being able to visit a loved one’s final resting place can be therapeutic or provide emotional closure, this practice is as wasteful as it is impractical.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a country that fetishizes youth, writing a book subtitled Why Life Gets Better After 50 is practically an act of revolution. But that’s exactly what the Jonathan Rauch has done. The Happiness Curve: Why Life Gets Better After 50 is a mind-blowing synthesis of social science and deeply moving personal accounts that will change the way you think about every stage of your life. Whether you’re in your early twenties, the thick of middle age, or your golden years, The Happiness Curve will help to explain not just what’s going on in your life now, but what to expect down the road. If knowledge is power, this book is pure dynamite. In a wide-ranging conversation with Nick Gillespie, Rauch explains why being aware of the aging process can help individuals be more productive and more fulfilled at every stage of life.)

– Who does Schneider want the IRP Executive Director to be? Who does Shaw want the IRP Executive Director to be?
– Would it be correct to say that you will only vote for an IRP chairman candidate who can and will defend and advance all the planks in the Republican Party platform and the IRP platform, including their traditional family, right to life, and immigration planks?
– What is your weighted vote and which IRP chairman candidate are you going to vote for and why?
– How many chairs will the IRP set up for observers at the IRP SCC meeting: 100, 200, 300, 400, 500+?
– Who has asked you to nominate them to serve as your deputy?
– Who has asked you to appoint them to the 2020 IRP State Convention Platform and Resolutions Committee?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Three Illinois conservatives who have a keen understanding of politics were asked by Illinois Family Action to comment on the upcoming meeting of the Illinois Republican Party’s State Central Committee on May 19th. A lot is at stake — here are just two related items. First, there’s the question of the establishment’s tampering with the county party State Central Committee elections last month. The outcome of one of the races is being contested. Second, that outcome will probably decide who gets chosen for the party chairmanship. The Bruce Rauner-backed incumbent, Tim Schneider, is seeking reelection, and conservatives who are seeking better leadership have put forward an alternative candidate, Mark Shaw. There needs to be a strong conservative turnout at that meeting! Here are the comments of three conservative leaders in Illinois (Carol Davis, Pam Johnson, and Doug Ibendahl):)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Fight to decide state GOP chair could go to court – Rick Pearson (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, those who dominate the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) make the IRP more anti-conservative, that is, more anti-Republican. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-rauner-gop-chairman-squabble-0511-20180510-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: An attorney for an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican State Central Committee says his client may go to court to try to reverse a decision by the Illinois State Board of Elections — a move that could affect who becomes the next state GOP chairman. State Board officials said they had no choice under law Thursday but to certify the results of county conventions held previously across the state that elected a member of the state central committee from each of the state’s 18 congressional districts. Those 18 will decide — by a weighted vote of GOP ballots cast in the March primary — whether to keep Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s handpicked chairman, Cook County Commissioner Tim Schneider, or opt for challenger Lake County GOP Chairman Mark Shaw. The battle represents a continued outgrowth of dissatisfaction among the party’s social conservatives that played out in Rauner’s narrow win in the March GOP gubernatorial primary over state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton. Ives is backing Shaw, as are many of Rauner’s conservative critics. Rauner has pointed out he picked Schneider, and the wealthy governor has largely been the state GOP’s sole funding source. At issue are the results of the Downstate GOP state committeeman’s race in the 15th Congressional District, one of the most Republican in the state, which could decide the outcome of the party chairman’s contest. Rauner supporter and state Rep. Chapin Rose of Mahomet was declared the narrow winner over former state Rep. Bob Winchester of Rosiclare who is backing Shaw. Stephen Boulton, an attorney representing Winchester, said no decision had been made about going to court, alleging irregularities in counting by a GOP staff working under Schneider’s direction. Such a decision will have to come quickly, with the Republican State Central Committee scheduled to meet May 19 in Springfield. “It’s difficult, expensive and a few other things, so I think a lot of people who aren’t me have to decide what they want to do,” Boulton said after the state board’s 7-0 vote. John Fogarty, the legal counsel for the state GOP, dismissed Boulton’s criticism that vote tallying at the county conventions lacked safeguards. “These are political elections. They are not any type of election that the state can come in and force, order with election judges and the like. These are county conventions and the counties are perfectly able to conduct these elections in the manner that they see fit,” Fogarty said.)

http://www.illinoishomepage.net/capitol-connection/gop-chairman-showdown-heats-up/1172844944
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The fight for control of the Illinois Republican Party is heating up with little more than a week left before they pick a party chair. Thursday afternoon, the Illinois State Board of Elections confirmed results from the State Central Committee’s contest. But, there is still a dispute over the winner in the 15th Congressional District. The results showed State Senator Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) won. He could be the deciding vote, but critics say the process was rigged. According to Matt Dietrich, a spokesman for the State Board of Elections, ISBE has no legal authority over the party rules. “All we are able to do under state statute is accept the results when the party gives them to us from their county conventions and certify those results, which are then used to elect the state chairman,” Dietrich said. Local party operative Mark Shaw said Thursday’s announcement shouldn’t significantly change the outcome of his race against current GOP Chairman Tim Schneider. Shaw is threatening legal action because of the dispute. Governor Bruce Rauner’s office released a statement after the results were announced. “Sen. Rose and the 17 other members of the State Central Committee will be seated at the upcoming meeting and will cast their votes for party chairman,” Rauner spokesman Aaron DeGroot stated. “We look forward to completing this important party business and focusing our efforts to defeat JB Pritzker and Mike Madigan in the upcoming November election.” The committee is scheduled to appoint the party chair on May 19th.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Illinois Senate is sending a message to Washington D.C. They took action on a bill on Thursday that would ensure all people in Illinois wouldn’t have to register their faith in a database. The Senate unanimously approved Senate Bill 3488, which would bar Illinois from participating in any sort of religious registry. Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago, is the sponsor of the bill. He said the bill comes after President Donald Trump suggested creating a Muslim-registry. President Trump floated the idea during his campaign. Cullerton said forcing people to register their religion is ‘un-American.’ He said he doesn’t want Illinois to be part of such narrow-minded politics. “The bill was initially in response, quite frankly, to the last presidential election where it was indicated by the president that he wanted to create a federal registry of Muslims,” Cullerton said. A Senate Republican spokesman said Republicans who voted for this bill aren’t necessarily taking a stance against the president. He said they’re trying to protect religious freedoms. The bill is now heading to the House for consideration.)

— The Illinois State Board of Elections is scheduled to certify the Illinois Republican Party State Central Committee election results at 3:00 PM today. – Dave Diersen

ILLINOIS HOMEPAGE
— Ives: “We’ve got a fight going on” – Mark Maxwell (DIERSEN: Who in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, and in Illinois represents Republicans, that is, who represents those who support the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and the rest of the planks in Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform? Those who reject the aforesaid planks voted for Rauner in the March 20, 2018 Republican primary. However, political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. What if Rauner promised that from now on, he would defend and advance all the planks in the IRP platform?)
http://www.illinoishomepage.net/capitol-connection/ives-weve-got-a-fight-going-on/1170723791
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “They want all controversy to go away, which would make sense from their standpoint,” Ives said with an air of defiance. “They are trying to pretend like there is a unified party and the truth is that they have dismissed the conservative voters who came out in droves to vote for me in the primary. They essentially want to have what looks like a unified party and not any controversy, but the truth is that we will not, our voices will be heard one way or the other.” . . . The Illinois Republican Party, which currently receives most of its funding from Rauner, is poised to declare an initial — if not premature — victory on Thursday when the Illinois State Board of Elections “certifies” the election results from the State Central Committee contest. Sources close to the party and the Rauner campaign predict the final results will secure enough votes to guarantee a re-election victory for Chairman Schneider. However, according to Matt Dietrich, a spokesman for the State Board of Elections, the certification process is more of a formality and bears no actual legal weight. “If there is a dispute within the Republican party about the conduct of the county conventions, that will have to be litigated in court. We have nothing to do with rules and procedures within the parties,” Dietrich said in an email. Shaw argues Thursday’s announcement party will make little difference in the outcome of his race, and says a judge will make the final determination. He says the party, even as a private entity, is “heavily regulated by the Illinois state election code.” . . . If Ives gets her way, party unity will have to wait for a judge’s gavel. “I think it is going to be up to the courts to determine this in the end,” she said. “From what we were told, there was some inappropriate voting going on.” “I don’t think that [Rose] will be certified as the winner of the 15th,” Shaw said. “It’s not totally clear who gets to make that decision. I do not agree that he is the winner of the 15th.” Party bylaws provide very few specifics to determine the election process of the chair and its members. Winchester hired corporate attorney Steve Boulton to challenge the voting procedures. Boulton works for Peraica and Associates, a firm with longstanding ties to conservative radio talk show host and political schemer Dan Proft. Peraica and Proft, both strident tea party conservatives who have long yearned for a smaller state government, are hardly strangers to losing elections and then swiftly protesting the results. Neither Proft nor Winchester returned messages seeking a comment for this story, but both are working to thwart Rose’s victory and elect Shaw to the party chair position. While he may stand to benefit from Proft’s behind-the-scenes machinations, Shaw sought to distance himself from the provocative radio host on Wednesday, choosing rather to embrace an embattled governor — and the party’s top donor — in pursuit of his own narrow election win. “I don’t really know Dan that well,” Shaw claimed. “I know he’s a radio personality. I’ve seen him at a few events.” Operatives aligned with Rauner and Schneider have privately suggested Proft and Ives are backing Shaw’s candidacy to settle a political score from a bitter primary. “If I’m such a big fan of Dan Proft, why did I have choice words with him?” Shaw said, referring to a December shouting match between the two men at a Republican event. “He came in and gave a speech and I thought unfairly criticized precinct organizing efforts,” Shaw said. “I got up and questioned his credentials to have a position like that.” Sources close to Ives believe Rauner’s general election loss to billionaire Democrat J.B. Pritzker is inevitable. They are seeking a statewide reset at the party level, which includes a plan to purge Rauner’s allies from the controls over the upcoming four-year term and realign the party closer to the nationalist themes from President Trump’s 2016 campaign. . . “As long as they want to paint a rosy picture, I’d ask them to keep thinking that way because they’re in for a surprise in November,” Shaw predicted. “Bruce Rauner is a fighter. I predict Bruce Rauner gets re-elected governor and I’m going to be there standing by his side as his chairman. He’s my governor and he’s going to be my governor another four years.”)

https://www.journal-topics.com/articles/tim-schneider-faces-challenge-for-state-party-leadership-post/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Schneider said he has the support of Ryan Higgins, 8th District state central committeeman and Schaumburg Township committeeman, and Sean Morrison, 6th District state central committeeman, Cook County GOP chairman and a fellow Cook County commissioner. Locally, some state central committeemen in the Northwest suburbs are playing it closer to the vest. “I know them both and hold them both in high regard,” Rosemont resident Jack Dorgan, 5th Congressional District state central committeeman and former Illinois GOP chairman, told the Journal. “Mark’s a good guy and Tim’s been a good leader.” Dorgan would not say who he would vote for. Dorgan said Republican leaders need to focus on the governor’s race and look ahead to redistricting after the 2020 U.S. Census. The party in power in Springfield after the Census will have control over drawing state and federal legislative district boundaries. The Journal was unable to reach Char Foss-Eggemann, 9th District state central committeeman and Maine Township Republican committeeman. Several who know Foss-Eggemann say she is on the fence over who to support. She was appointed to the Illinois Human Rights Commission in May 2017 by Rauner.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Emerging earlier from the same meeting, Senate President John Cullerton said there’s “a general understanding about how much money we have coming in” while he obliquely mentioned a “gap that needs to be closed” without specifics. The Chicago Democrat downplayed Republicans’ call for a revenue estimate. “I wouldn’t be hung up on that,” Cullerton said. “That gets into somewhat of a ‘gotcha’ game and a political fight. That’s not what’s holding us up.” The Legislature’s bipartisan financial analyst, the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability, estimated in February that state revenue — more than half from income taxes, but also sales taxes, transfers from other state sources and federal grants — would be $37.964 billion in the 2019 fiscal year. The Governor’s Office of Management and Budget’s estimate was $37.865 billion, $99 million less. Most of that money is already spoken for, because of obligated state spending for Medicaid, pensions, and other programs.)

— Data Points to Wide Gap in Asylum Approval Rates at Nation’s Immigration Courts – Stephen Stock, Rachel Witte and Jeremy Carroll (DIERSEN: What if Democrats who want flee the crime and poverty in Democrat areas had to officially file asylum requests and get those requests approved by Republicans before they could move to Republican areas? What do you say to Democrats who flee the crime and poverty in Democrat areas and move to Republican areas, but who continue to demonize, denigrate, and condemn Republicans? These asylum seekers blame Republicans for the crime and poverty in Democrat areas.)
https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Data-Points-to-Wide-Gap-in-Asylum-Approval-Rates-at-Nations-Immigration-Courts-482182911.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: From 2016 through the first part of 2018, immigration courts in Los Angeles and San Francisco consistently ranked in the nation’s top 15 courts when it comes to the number of asylum requests granted. Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, New York and Boston were also in the top 15 each year. Court data show each of those courts grants asylum requests more than 50 percent of the time. On the opposite end of the spectrum, U.S. immigration courts that are vastly less likely to approve asylum petitions include Atlanta, Lumpkin, Georgia, Charlotte, Dallas and Houston. In some of those courts, asylum is granted around 20 percent of the time. In other jurisdictions, like the court in Lumpkin, judges grant asylum only 10 percent of the time.)

https://blog.gao.gov/2018/05/09/recognizing-the-federal-workforce/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The most vital resource at any federal agency is its workforce. During Public Service Recognition Week, we’re celebrating the contributions of federal employees. This year is especially noteworthy because it’s the 40th anniversary of the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978, which established the basis for our modern federal workforce, including the creation of the Office of Personnel Management. Today’s WatchBlog continues our tradition of celebrating federal employees.)

There’s no place in for the fear-mongering tactics and conspiracy theories these extremist groups espouse in our state, and I applaud Representative Dave McSweeney, a Republican from McHenry County, for demanding an apology from Bruce Rauner, the head of the Illinois GOP. The president’s comments came in an early morning tweet on Wednesday. The MRC had looked at broadcast evening news reports of Trump from Jan. 1 through April 30 and “found 90 percent of the evaluative comments about the president were negative.” The report examined 1,065 network evening news stories about Trump and key members of his administration. And it noted the “hostile coverage” from ABC, CBS and NBC. According to the study, The Russia “collusion” story was given the most time on the broadcasts of all stories regarding the administration. The MRC reported it took up 321 minutes or nearly one-fifth of all Trump administration coverage. The study was a topic of conversation on TV’s “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday. https://www.federaltimes.com/federal-oversight/congress/2018/05/09/congressman-calls-out-opm-targeting-of-feds-retirement-benefits/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, wrote to Office of Personnel Management Director Jeff Pon May 9, 2018, to express “strong opposition” to a recent letter in which the director proposed sweeping cuts and increased contributions to federal employee retirement. “Federal employees are the cornerstone of an effective and efficient federal government. Our country relies on these talented men and women to perform critical duties across all sectors of government, from national security and healthcare to economic expansion and infrastructure development,” Turner wrote. Turner’s opposition as a Republican is notable, as Democrats have traditionally held a strong line against cutting federal employee benefits in order to balance the budget. Pon’s legislative proposals would likely require fairly unified Republican support to pass into actual legislation. According to a news release on the letter of opposition, Turner’s district contains 30,000 federal employees that would likely be impacted by the proposed changes. Turner took particular issue with aspects of OPM’s proposals that would impact current employees and retirees, such as increases in retirement contributions for current employees and the elimination of cost-of-living adjustments for all current and future retirees under the Federal Employee Retirement System. “This breaks a promise to current federal employees and retirees. We should not arbitrarily make changes to policies that families have planned their lives around, particularly when it affects current retirees with limited ability to make up for unanticipated reductions in estimated income,” wrote Turner. Pon justified the proposed changes as bringing the government more in line with private sector practices, though some have argued that prospective employees are attracted to the government over the private sector due to more generous retirement packages. “In order to ‘recruit, retain and honor a world-class workforce to serve the American people’ as OPM seeks, the federal government must maintain a competitive benefits package befitting such a workforce. With the United States’ growing economy and a tightening labor market, we cannot afford to make the federal government a less attractive place to work by diminishing the very benefits that help the government keep pace with jobs in the (often higher-paying) private sector,” Turner wrote.)

Thomas Quigley, of Round Lake Beach, and military veteran Ceasar Soto, of Waukegan, appeared Tuesday before the Lake County Board to speak out against a previous statement made by District 11 county board member Paul Frank about a possible ban of automatic weapons. Quigley requested board members immediately declare Lake County “a sanctuary county for all gun owners,” then told “the gun grabbers on the board to read the U.S. Constitution and study history; all governmental tyranny begins with gun confiscation.” Quigley and Soto spoke up because of statements made during the closing moments of the March 13 county board meeting where Frank, a Democrat from Highland Park, hinted it could be time the board enters the debate on the national gun issue.)

https://northcooknews.com/stories/511407522-house-bill-to-create-female-based-council-raises-questions-from-gop-lawmakers
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Speaking of sex, what about the male gender, asked Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton). She said a state created group should not be based on sex segregation and cited major media to prove her point. The Atlantic shows boys dominate in high school drop outs and learning disabilities, and the Washington Post revealed boys in America continue to fall behind girls in academics, according to Ives. Ives questioned the bill’s legality as far as the Equal Rights Amendment is concerned and noted as a mother of boys and a girl, the notion to form a group for one gender is ridiculous. “I think we should emphasize both of our children’s sexes, both men and women as well,” Ives said. HB5544 passed 64-24 and moved to the Senate.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— The U.S. and China: More Alike Than We’d Like? – Thomas L. Friedman
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/08/opinion/us-china-more-alike.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In Washington these days it is not uncommon for people to be invited to a dinner or a public gathering and think to themselves: “I hope none of them will be there.” And the them people are talking about is not someone of a different faith or race — which would be awful enough — but it’s someone just from a different political party. In other words, in both Beijing and Washington, self-censorship, and biting one’s tongue, is more rife than ever — but for different reasons. In Beijing it’s so you won’t get arrested. In Washington it’s so you won’t get into a fight. In both cases, though, the net results are fewer people talking truth across ideological lines. At the same time, in China today, if you’re a Communist Party official or senior bureaucrat, you have to toe the ruling party’s line or you could be quickly purged or imprisoned. In America today, if you’re a Republican Party congressman or senator, you, too, have to toe the ruling party’s line or you could be quickly purged or primaried — or get a tweet in the back from the president. But there is one difference: In China’s ruling Communist Party, it’s never safe to criticize the president. In America’s ruling Republican Party, you can criticize the president, or vote your conscience, if you’re dying, retiring or whispering.)

NORTHWEST HERALD
— McSweeney: Gov. Bruce Rauner should apologize for meeting with ‘known extremist’ Diane Evertsen David McSweeney attacks governor for meeting with ‘known extremist’ Diane Evertsen – ED KOMENDA  (DIERSEN: Why did Rauner meet privately with the leaders of the McHenry County Republican Party? What if Rauner met privately with the leaders of your Republican county party organization and/or with the leaders of your Republican township/ward party organization? In the 2002 Illinois Republican gubernatorial primary, Corrine Wood called Jim Ryan an extremist.)
http://www.nwherald.com/2018/05/08/mcsweeney-gov-bruce-rauner-should-apologize-for-meeting-with-known-extremist-diane-evertsen/adt9cfh/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A state lawmaker is lambasting Gov. Bruce Rauner after Illinois’ top leader met with members of the McHenry County Republican Party over the weekend in private. Rauner spent part of his Saturday at an invitation-only roundtable at the McHenry County GOP’s Crystal Lake headquarters – an event featuring a Who’s Who of party insiders, including: McHenry County Sheriff Bill Prim, McHenry County State’s Attorney Patrick Kenneally and McHenry County Board Member Jim Kearns. But State Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, took issue with someone else in attendance at the Saturday meet-up: McHenry County’s new chairwoman, Diane Evertsen, who at one time served as president of the Minutemen Midwest – an organization the Southern Poverty Law Center designated a “nativist extremist” group. “The governor should apologize for meeting with a known extremist,” said McSweeney, who heard about the meeting after it happened. McSweeney pointed to Evertsen’s association with Minutemen Midwest, which the SPLC named several times on its annual list of nativist extremist groups between 2007 and 2010. The Alabama-based civil rights nonprofit defines nativist extremist groups as organizations that go beyond mere advocacy to personally confront suspected undocumented immigrants or those who hire or help them. McSweeney said a simple Google search reveals the views of the group Evertsen chaired. The legislator characterized those views as “disgraceful.” Minutemen Midwest had a website – www.minutemenmidwest.com – but it has been taken down since its launch. While the site is dead, some of the material published there is recoverable with the internet archive known as the “Wayback Machine,” McSweeney said. McSweeney highlighted an article published on the website written by William H. Calhoun titled “Illegal Immigration: Third-World Invasion” – a piece suggesting the U.S. is under threat by immigrants of different “blood.” “Invaders from the Orient, Asia, Africa, Central and South America are invading the first world, and they are intent only upon conquest,” the article said. “With the exception of a very small upper class of pure European blood, most Mexicans are either Amerindian or Mestizo (mostly Amerindian with a few drops of Spaniard or African blood). They are not Western; genealogically they are Asiatic; and they despise the West.” The article appalled McSweeney, he said. “It’s probably the most extreme article that I’ve read in a long time,” McSweeney said. “It’s disgusting.” Evertsen, a 73-year-old Harvard grandmother who once served on the McHenry County Board and now serves on McHenry County College’s board of trustees, could not be reached for comment. The Northwest Herald also reached out to Gov. Rauner’s campaign communications director for comment, but campaign officials weren’t immediately available Tuesday. About 20 people attended the Saturday gathering, according to sources invited to the event.)

(FROM THE LETTER: Are you kidding me, Springfield? The state of Illinois is imploding at a frightening rate, and you’re focused on passing a bill that forces our schools to teach LGBT history? (Paid for by our outrageous property taxes, by the way.) This bill (SB3249) also requires schools to teach about the illegal deportation of Mexicans during the Great Depression and labor union contributions to our economy. And children will not be permitted to graduate eighth grade if they don’t receive this instruction. Holy political agenda, Democrats! But, perhaps you are sincerely interested in teaching our children an accurate and nondiscriminatory account of our history. If this is true, you must necessarily include a unit on the societal benefits that Catholics have contributed toward Illinois’ schools, hospitals and charities. The impact is quite significant. I would encourage anyone reading this to demand that your particular group be recognized in a mandatory history unit as well. After everyone feels good about being recognized, there might be a few minutes left in the school day for reading, writing and arithmetic.)

https://www.wsj.com/articles/companies-trying-to-deal-with-discrimination-face-backlash-1525604400
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Companies trying to rectify a legacy of discrimination are finding that some tactics are backfiring and sparking new grievances. The Wing, a women’s shared-office space and networking club, has drawn such ire. Its no-men-allowed membership policy for collaboration spaces in trendy New York neighborhoods is designed to attract like-minded women professionals who want to encourage and invest in one another. The Wing recently opened a Washington, D.C., location and there is a wait list for a future office in Los Angeles, the company says. In March, the New York City Human Rights Commission launched an investigation into the Wing’s practices, which include workshops on political organization and panels reserved for members featuring celebrities and U.S. legislators. Seth Hoy, a spokesman for the New York commission, confirmed the agency’s probe and declined to comment on it further. He says the agency works to ensure that businesses comply with laws prohibiting gender discrimination. The inquiry is one of the latest examples of how female-only initiatives and other diversity efforts are drawing objections from those who feel left out or challenge the idea that people in historically underrepresented groups need targeted resources to help them accelerate in their careers and are raising concerns that the programs unfairly exclude other people.)

— Equal Rights Amendment not ready yet – Bill Lukitsch (DIERSEN: To support the ERA is to join the Democrats in shouting that Republicans continue to deny women equal rights. Democrats have always shouted at women that Republicans have caused all the problems that women have had, are having, and will have. Ever-increasingly, Democrats encourage/insist/demand that women hate Republicans.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Lang said some on the Republican side “haven’t committed one way or the other” and attributed that to “people on the far right,” referring to some opposing groups that contend the Equal Rights Amendment would enshrine abortion in the U.S. Constitution and undermine religious freedoms. “It has nothing whatsoever to do with abortion, it has nothing whatsoever to do with gay rights or bathrooms or football scholarships or the draft or anything else that those folks are peddling,” Lang said. “It has to do with giving women equal rights under the United States Constitution. That’s all it’s about.”)
— GOP Rep. Wehrli wants a constitutional convention (DIERSEN: Illinois Democrats have made it extremely clear that if there was a constitutional convention, they would use it to get rid of individuals, organizations, and companies that are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, draft avoiders, and those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)

— Why people leave their job – Bryan Adams (DIERSEN: In 1971, while I was working for Firestone Stores in Chicago Heights, I accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile because that job would have given me far greater opportunities to use what I had learned earning a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU in 1970. But Oldsmobile withdrew that job offer saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. That directly resulted in my accepting a job offer from IRS.)

DAILY HERALD
— Estimated tax savings appears to be inflated – Tom Teune, Wheaton (DIERSEN: Government is nasty. Politics is nasty. What is your household income? The Diersen’s household income is far less than $135,000. My Civil Service Retirement System pension is only $51,864 and my Social Security is only $2,064. My critics/opponents who have more income than I do use that to paint me as being a financial failure. My critics/opponents who have less income than I do use that to paint me as being a undeservedly filthy rich.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/discuss/20180507/estimated-tax-savings-appears-to-be-inflated
(FROM THE LETTER: In the Daily Herald’s March 22 issue, Peter Roskam is quoted saying that the median income of a family of four in the 6th congressional district is $135,000. And it stands to save $4,000 in 2018 federal income taxes. My senses told me that Rep. Roskam’s numbers were inflated, so I searched a number of sources and selected the highest 6th District family income given by the federal government’s Census Bureau. The Census Bureau reports the district’s median family income is $98,000. I also calculated the income taxes at both levels and found that a family owning a home with a mortgage would save only $2,000 at Roskam’s suggested median income and only a few hundred dollars at the Census Bureau’s reported median income.)
— Women make up just 11% of the highest paid jobs in corporate America – Jena McGregor (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted a) that instead of me, the Post Office should have hired a woman in 1966, b) that the Post Office should gotten rid of me much sooner than it did so that a woman could have my job, c) that instead of me, IRS should have hired a woman in 1971, d) that instead of me, IRS should have promoted women in 1972, 1973, and 1974, e) that instead of me, GAO should have hired a woman in 1980, f) that instead of me, GAO should have promoted a woman in 1986, and g) that GAO should have gotten rid of me much sooner than it did so that a woman could have my job and my preferred corner office.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Natasha Korecki will be moving on from Illinois Playbook to take on a new role for POLITICO as a national correspondent. (DIERSEN: Just kidding, but should I apply for her job? If Politico came anywhere close to considering my application, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would come out of their closets and viciously demonize me, viciously denigrate me, and viciously condemn me as being a White supremacist, a Nazi, a KKK member, a hater, a racist, a sexist, a bigot, and even worse things. Who would come to my defense? My critics/opponents have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout and they crow that they can a) destroy any individual, b) destroy any organization, c) destroy any company, and d) destroy any government in Wheaton, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois that they want to.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s truly bittersweet for me. As I told media columnist Robert Feder in his kind writeup, helping launch Illinois Playbook and connecting with readers from across the state has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Not only do we have the best local politics around, our readers are savvy and incredibly engaged, which has made all of this a complete joy. I am also thrilled for the next chapter and the opportunity to work more closely with a tremendous group of reporters and editors at POLITICO. Don’t worry! Illinois Playbook isn’t going away, we are actively seeking a new author. We’ll have updates here when they happen.)

ILLINOIS FAMILY INSTITUTE
— Torching Marriage – Laurie Higgins (DIERSEN: Those who want to destroy traditional marriage and family, that is, those who promote LGBTQ activity, their operatives, and their dupes have always worked the hardest against me. They demonize me, denigrate me, and condemn me as being a hypocritical fraud because my wife and I gave up trying to have children, because we did not adopt, and because we did not become foster parents.)
