CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Potential Lisa Madigan successors scramble to raise campaign cash
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-lisa-madigan-campaign-cash-20170922-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican candidate for attorney general Erika Harold on Thursday sent an email to supporters calling an upcoming fundraising goal the “first challenge” of her campaign. Harold has raised more than $40,000 in the month since the former Miss America and unsuccessful candidate for Congress announced her bid, according campaign reports. About $34,000 of that came from the Illinois Republican Party paying for media production, records show.)
— Surging stock market powers U.S. wealth to $96.2 trillion – AP  (DIERSEN: What are the main reasons why you have less money? For me, the main reasons are: a) my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

— Generation Free Lunch, time to get a j-o-b! – Heather Wilhelm  (DIERSEN: What bad jobs have you had?  My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that all the jobs that had were bad jobs and that they would never stoop to take them. I did yard work and delivered newspapers 1962-1964; washed dishes 1964-1966; cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966; delivered mail 1966-1969; worked on an automobile assemble line and as a security guard in 1970; sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances 1970-1971; pumped gasoline 1971-1972; collected delinquent taxes 1971-1980; and audited federal agencies 1980-1997.)

— The bell tolls for liberty on campus – John Kass  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, colleges promote hatred of individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries that are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/kass/ct-met-first-amendment-college-kass-0922-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: You may have once had doubts that the American left has spent decades feeding a weed that would grow to strangle American liberty. But those doubts have now been dispelled, haven’t they? Because a new survey of American college students by the Brookings Institution offers perhaps the most depressing forecast of the future of liberty that we’ve seen. It tells us that many of the most privileged people on the planet, American college students, are barbarously illiterate when it comes to understanding the freedoms given them by the Constitution. A barbarously illiterate people can easily be turned into an angry horde. It is dangerous work, yes, but it can be done. They can be herded, cynically, with prompts to emotion and calls to anger for short-term political gain. But having thrown away their understanding of their freedoms, such people cannot remain free for long. According to the survey, when asked if the First Amendment protected so-called hate speech, 44 percent of college students said no. And 16 percent said they didn’t know the answer. More than half, 51 percent, said they think that “shouting so the audience can’t hear,” also known as the heckler’s veto, is an acceptable tactic for silencing a controversial speaker. So just shout them down. Scream. Don’t engage, don’t ignore, and don’t bother to use reason and offer counter arguments to win the battle of ideas.)

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes in Wheaton and in Glen Ellyn have always been filled with hatred against Robert Sandberg. — CURRIE TO RECEIVE 6-FIGURE PENSION AFTER FIRST YEAR OF RETIREMENT  The longtime House majority leader will benefit from a sweetener provision that grants massive pension spikes to career lawmakers after one year of retirement. – Austin Berg  (DIERSEN: My $50,856 Civil Service Retirement System pension is dramatically reduced because my Democrat superiors in the federal government wasted my career and forced me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old. But then again, that is want Democrat politicians wanted them to do.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: When she retires as majority leader, her salary will likely stand at over $91,000, including her base salary and leadership bonus. That means her first-year pension payment will be more than $77,000. Then the spikes kick in. Her second-year pension will total more than $121,000, according to GARS rules.)

In 1980, when I was 31 years old, after working for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $79,563-$90,173, I transferred to GAO. I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, and I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul. The Democrats who ran GAO offered me a transfer, but only if I took an $18,847 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars, from GS-12 Step 5 down to GS-9 Step 10. The Democrats who ran GAO would not have required that if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran. Much of what I did for IRS was very similar to what I would do for GAO. GAO audits IRS. In 1987, my Democrat GAO superiors got rid of the GAO manager who had arranged my transfer, who had finally been able to get me assigned to audits of IRS in 1986, and who had gotten me promoted to GS-13 Step 1, currently $94,610, in 1986. My GAO superiors kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 (1986-1988) of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, did not promote me beyond GS-13, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, and forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old. — We Have Met The Enemy And He Is Us  Is democracy a root cause of the state’s budget woes? – CHRISTOPHER Z. MOONEY (DIERSEN: What does the future look like for those who share your demographics?  The future is extremely bleak for those who share my demographics. Ever-increasingly, anti-Trumps promote hatred of those who are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), retired, those who have pensions, and those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
http://nprillinois.org/post/illinois-issues-we-have-met-enemy-and-he-us#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As the governor and legislature have grappled in a historic death match over their views of how to sync our policy desires and our resources, many wonder if there is something especially daunting about budgeting in the Prairie State. One major problem is democracy. The logic of representative democracy is that policymakers want election or re-election and they maximize their chances by reflecting their constituents’ wishes. In this era of instant communication and frequent opinion polling, our leaders know what we want and we know what they are doing. Some even argue that this generates hyper-representation, precluding policymakers’ careful thought and independent analysis. So, what are Illinoisans’ views on state government taxing and spending? The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University conducted a poll in March 2017 that gives us considerable insight into this and the budgetary puzzle that results. “Don’t tax me; don’t tax thee”)

http://www.theblaze.com/news/2017/09/20/apple-ceo-wishes-everyone-loved-america-like-dreamers-do/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Apple CEO Tim Cook said in an interview that it was inhuman to deny amnesty to those who were brought into the country illegally as children. What did he say exactly? “I think it’s the biggest issue of our time,” he said when asked about illegal immigrants. “Because this goes to the values of being American.” “This is, ‘are we human?’” he said. “Are we acting in a track of morality?” he continued. “These people if you haven’t met them, at Apple we have many that came when they were two years old, they didn’t make a decision to come. They came here, they only know our country, this is their home, they love America deeply, when you talk to them, I wish everyone in America loved America this much.” “They have jobs, they pay taxes, they are pillars of their communities,” Cook added. “They’re incredible people. And so to me it would be like someone coming to Mike, and saying Mike I just found out you’re not really a citizen here you need to leave.” “This is unacceptable, this is not who we are as a country and so I am personally shocked that there’s even a discussion of this,” he said. “This is one of those things when it is so clear, and it’s not a political thing, or at least I don’t see it like that at all.” “This is about basic human dignity and respect, it is that simple and straightforward,” he added. “On the broader issue of immigration,” he continued, “if I was a country leader right now my goal would be to monopolize the world’s talent. I’d want every smart person coming to my country, because smart people create jobs and jobs is the ultimate thing that create a great environment in a country a land of opportunity, a land where everybody can do well if you work hard.” “These are the things that drive people,” he concluded, “it gives people a sense of purpose, and uh so, I’d have a very aggressive plan, not just to let a few people in, I would be recruiting.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Senator Jason Barickman, a Bloomington Republican, practices law at Meyer Capel, the same law firm that employs Harold. Barickman shot down rumors that he could run for the attorney general spot, saying, “Erika [Harold] is uniquely positioned in that she is electable statewide and she has great credentials for serving as Illinois’ top attorney. “She’ll be fine if she’s primaried,” Barickman added, “but I’m encouraging Republicans to rally around her now.” Another prominent Republican attorney Kirk Dillard halfway sidestepped direct questions if he might run for the opening. “I’m enjoying overseeing mass transit in Chicagoland where we move over two million riders daily and watching my teenage children grow up,” Dillard said. The former state senator and chairman of the DuPage County Republican Party now oversees the Regional Transportation Authority. He’s also a partner at Locke Lord law firm. “Harold’s chances are excellent,” Dillard said. “She is intelligent, personable and right out of central casting. She will give Democrats fits with her profile. [She] should be given a lot of deference by others because she stood up to run before (emphasis his) Lisa Madigan chose not to run for reelection. Dillard added, “It is also important for the Republicans to put forth a balanced geographic ticket.” While some Republicans are publicly supporting Harold, others are privately wondering if House Minority Leader Jim Durkin could run for the job. Durkin did not respond to questions about the race.)

THE HILL
— The danger of forsaking America’s civil service – BRIAN O’TOOLE
http://thehill.com/opinion/white-house/351237-the-danger-of-forsaking-americas-civil-service
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The recent news that President Trump is cutting back on pay raises for U.S. government employees was just another of many slights to a civil service that has been under siege since Trump launched his campaign pledging to “drain the swamp.”  Whether he and his ideological followers know it, or care, these dedicated professionals are not the swamp. What they are is economists, engineers, intelligence officers, lawyers, park rangers, trade negotiators, and countless others who signed up for government service not to work for one president and his or her policies, but to advance our great nation’s interests. I ought to know.  I joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 2003 to work for an administration whose president I did not vote for and whose policies I often did not support. I did not think twice about doing it; it was fascinating work in service of my country, and in a post-September 11 world when service was celebrated and honorable. But now, I worry that those who would consider government service are thinking twice.  After all, who would want to work for a president who has shown so little regard for the agencies in which they would work and whose supporters, including in the media, rail against a mythical “deep state?” We’re seeing the results of this assault already; Politico reported recently that applications in June for the State Department’s Foreign Service exam, once among the most sought-after opportunities in all of government, fell more than a quarter from the year before. I wonder how many currently in the government want to remain working while constantly being maligned.  Good people are leaving the civil service, not in droves as political appointees do on Inauguration Day, but steadily and surely. Federal government employment has fallen by 11,000 this year, according to the Bureau of Labor statistics, and the administration clearly believes it to be a positive development.  But this drip-drop exodus is draining Washington of the critical expertise and experience necessary to design and execute complex objectives, not of swamp creatures. During the 1990s, due to budget cuts and deprioritization of mission, the CIA lost significant numbers from its ranks; dedicated and talented civil servants who were told they were not needed.  That exodus decimated its institutional capacity, especially in the middle ranks where much of the demanding, technical work of the U.S. government gets done, and from where so many are leaving government now.)

LOS ANGELES TIMES
— Before his bid to become California governor, John Cox took on some guy named Obama – Phil Willon (DIERSEN: Residents of my precinct and residents of the precincts to the east and west got to meet John Cox along with the other four announced Republican candidates for U.S. Senate – Chirinjeev Kathuria, Jim Oberweis, Andy McKenna, and Jack Ryan – on July 5, 2003 at a picnic in the Prairie Path Park in my precinct that I organized. Cox brought Jays Potato Chips. The 200+ attendees included now Congressman Randy Hultgren. Jack Ryan won the primary, but withdrew. His replacement, Alan Keyes lost to Barack Obama.)
http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-pol-john-cox-california-governor-race-20170919-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Cox went on to earn an accounting degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago and later graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Chicago-Kent College of Law. The Illinois law firm he founded in 1981 specializes in tax law, estate planning and corporate law, and is worth upward of $200 million, he says. In the mid-1990s, he was the chief financial officer of a Chicago snack food institution, Jays Foods, helping the family that started the company buy it back from food giant Borden Inc. and putting it back in the black, saving hundreds of jobs. “I’ve hired people, I’ve fired people. I fought the battle. I borrowed money. I dealt with agencies,” Cox said. “Now that doesn’t make me a saint. There’s tons of other people who have done the same thing. But it does give me certain skills that allow me to look at a situation like California is in right now, and say, ‘Hey, here’s the things we need to do.’” The silver-haired 62-year-old moved to the posh San Diego County enclave of Rancho Santa Fe about a decade ago, and now belongs to the New Majority, a group founded primarily by Orange County Republican business executives in order to nudge the state party away from social conservatives. In November, Cox voted for Libertarian Gary Johnson, the former governor of New Mexico, saying he harbored doubts about Donald Trump. Cox now says he backs Trump “100%.”)

https://www.wsj.com/articles/higher-eds-latest-taboo-is-bourgeois-norms-1505774818
(FROM THE ARTICLE: To the list of forbidden ideas on American college campuses, add “bourgeois norms” — hard work, self-discipline, marriage and respect for authority. Last month, two law professors published an op-ed in the Philadelphia Inquirer calling for a revival of the “cultural script” that prevailed in the 1950s and still does among affluent Americans: “Get married before you have children and strive to stay married for their sake. Get the education you need for gainful employment, work hard, and avoid idleness. . . . Eschew substance abuse and crime.” The weakening of these traditional norms has contributed to today’s low rates of workforce participation, lagging educational levels and widespread opioid abuse, the professors argued. The op-ed triggered an immediate uproar at the University of Pennsylvania, where one of its authors, Amy Wax, teaches.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Erika Harold is used to overcoming challenges. But the 37-year-old Urbana, Ill., attorney and former Miss America recently had a beauty of an obstacle removed from her political path, as Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is not seeking a fifth term. “I announced my candidacy on Aug. 15 and exactly one month later, Lisa Madigan decided to drop out of the race,” Ms. Harold (who wants to become the state’s next chief law-enforcement officer) said Sunday at the Rock Island County Republicans’ annual Ronald Reagan BBQ at Pinnacle Country Club. “We’ve done very well so far.” She graduated from University of Illinois and was accepted at Harvard Law School, but it cost $175,000 for three years. Ms. Harold became Miss America in 2003 to help pay for law school, from which she graduated in 2007, debt-free. She’s been a practicing attorney ever since and has run for the 13th Congressional District seat in Illinois. “I see a state government that’s out of control,” Ms. Harold said. “I see a state government that’s not accountable to the rule of law, and I want to see an Attorney General’s office that works for the people. I want an Attorney General’s office that does not pick and choose the laws it enforces.” She wants to fight public corruption and hold lawmakers accountable. “That has not been done in the past 16 years,” Ms. Harold claimed of Ms. Madigan, whose father is longtime House Speaker Mike Madigan. “Too often that office is used in ways that benefit the politician,” she said. “It does not work on the side of the people.” Having been harassed in high school, Ms. Harold said she knows what it’s like to feel powerless. “People are fed up with what they see in government, on both sides of the aisle,” she said. “I am a committed, independent voice, willing to hold both sides accountable.” Ms. Harold also said she’s a fighter, and an unconventional GOP candidate. “I’m not the kind of person people think of when they think of the Republican Party,” she said. “I will win because I will not be out-worked.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Did you realize you have a right to not be offended? That you have a right to other people’s property and their labor? Were you unaware that you, as a citizen, have the same rights in the United States of America as an illegal alien? These are among the newly declared “rights” Democrats have bestowed on people through the power of simply saying they exist. The problem is this concept is fundamentally un-American. Our rights as Americans are not granted to us by the government. Our government is empowered by us on the condition it does not infringe upon the rights with which we were born. The Founding Fathers were brilliant in that they wrote the Constitution to limit government, not citizens. The First Amendment, for example, is explicit in how it starts, “Congress shall make no law…” The rights to free speech, freedom of religion, the press, assembly, etc., are not granted by the Constitution, they are protected from government by it. The whole of the Bill of Rights is written the same way, “Shall not be infringed,” etc. Since the government is not granting those individual rights – we were born with them – it can’t take them away. For liberal progressives, this concept is a threat – they prefer the government being not only the protector of rights, but the decider of what is and is not a right. That’s not liberty; it’s closer to slavery. And slavery is what the left-wing Antifa would like to impose on the country.)

http://dailycaller.com/2017/09/17/washington-post-writer-says-trump-is-killing-him-literally/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Dana Milbank, a writer for The Washington Post, believes President Donald Trump is literally killing him. Milbank said he discovered Trump’s presidency is affecting his health after visiting the doctor for his first physical in 49 years, in an opinion piece published Friday. Milbank said he had to report that he had not been feeling well recently. “President Trump is killing me. No, really. He’s killing me,” Milbank wrote. The WaPo writer said he has been suffering from fatigue, headaches, trouble sleeping, and chest pain. Milbank said his blood pressure was “alarmingly high” after his doctor tested it, making a point that his blood pressure has “always been normal.” Milbank said he was suffering from “Trump Hypertensive Unexplained Disorder,” a disorder he created and diagnosed himself with. “For almost five decades, I had been the picture of health, but eight months into Trump’s presidency, I was suddenly ailing,” he wrote. “Trump is the only variable, I told my doctor. ‘He sure is variable,’ my doc replied, endorsing the diagnosis.” Throughout Milbank’s piece he explained how he knows his “disorder” caused by Trump is a real thing, claiming he performed a longitudinal study to test his “hypothesis.” Milbank said he purchased a blood pressure monitor and would wrap it around his bicep throughout various parts of the daily news cycle. “I am spending the evening with friends. Blood pressure: 116/67. Trump says he is going to respond to North Korea with ‘fire and fury.’ Blood pressure: 150/95,” Milbank continued. “I’m at home with the kids. Blood pressure: 117/69. Jeff Sessions says they’re scrapping the DACA program: 137/92.” Milbank said he has spoken with psychotherapists who have told him that they are unusually busy with clients who continue to speak about Trump. He claims that Trump is “exacerbating whatever neurosis, depression or other conditions they had.” The WaPo writer said he addressed his self-diagnosed illness of Trump Hypertensive Unexplained Disorder with blood pressure medication prescribed by his doctor. “My prescription is renewable until January 2021, at which point I expect it will no longer be medically necessary,” he concluded.)

EDITOR AND PUBLISHER
— To Avoid Media Bias, News Organizations Are Lifting the Veil – Gretchen A. Peck  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, “news organizations” focus on destroying Trump and destroying his supporters, and especially his supporters who are Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, draft avoiders, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/feature/to-avoid-media-bias-news-organizations-are-lifting-the-veil/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Take note of conversations about policy, politics or politicians. Often, they will devolve into a smearing of sources and the news organizations that provided the information; they’re perceived as being for one ideology and against another. It would be disingenuous to suggest that there are not news organizations that have a definitive perspective when it comes to controversial topics such as these. The same might be said for journalists and pundits, too, and the public has become hip to it. In fact, when you consider how most consumers of news choose their sources of information, which often align with their own perspectives and beliefs, it’s easy to see how the lines in the sand have been drawn. Part of the daily mission for many conservative news outlets is to seed distrust among fans, making them leery of all other sources of information from “the liberal media,” including local, regional and national newspapers. Meanwhile, representing the Left, there are organizations like Media Matters for America, which spend resources on correcting or exposing misinformation perpetuated by conservative news sources. And on social media, “fake news” lives on. The public is rightfully confused and unnecessarily agitated, and newspaper brands have suffered because of it. Objectivity as a Guidepost  Perhaps the greatest misconception that the public has about journalists and the business of newsgathering is that pure objectivity is not just possible, but that it’s the whole job. What they may not realize is that sticking to “just the facts,” or merely the “who, what, when, where, and why,” makes for an interminably hollow story, like a naked skeleton. It lacks context, flavor, understanding based on research and knowledge. A “just the facts” story is both boring to read and a dereliction of a journalist’s duty to go beyond the “5 Ws,” with insight, perspectives, and things that become known during the newsgathering that should not be unknown for the sake of appearing purely objective.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Google and Facebook, the world’s biggest sellers of online advertising, faced sharp criticism on Friday for allowing advertisers to direct ads to users who searched for or expressed an interest in racist sentiments and hate speech. In response to two separate news reports exposing the issues, both companies said they would change how their systems worked. The criticism began on Thursday after a report from ProPublica, a nonprofit news site, revealed that Facebook enabled advertisers to seek out self-described “Jew haters” and other anti-Semitic topics. The company responded by saying that it would restrict how advertisers targeted their audiences on the social network. On Friday, an article from BuzzFeed reported how Google allowed the sale of ads tied to racist and bigoted keywords, and automatically suggested more offensive terms as part of that process. By midday, Google said it would work harder to halt offensive ads. The incidents added to a growing awareness of the complicated — and powerful — automated advertising systems that have turned Facebook and Google into two of the world’s most valuable companies. The companies have learned how to maximize their ability to connect any size of advertiser to highly tailored groups of people who use their services every day, collecting billions of dollars in the process.)

WASHINGTON POST
— Don’t buy all the PR-style hooey about ‘dreamers’ – Mickey Kaus  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, those individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries that promote Dreamers call members of the following groups White supremacists, Nazis, KKK members, haters, racists, sexists, bigots, and even worse things: Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German Americans, draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/dont-buy-all-the-pr-style-hooey-about-dreamers/2017/09/12/adc246d6-9738-11e7-82e4-f1076f6d6152_story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Who wants to deport “dreamers”? Not many people, it turns out. Even veteran immigration restrictionists seem willing to legalize this subset of undocumented immigrants if it is part of a package deal. That’s true even though a lot of what’s said about the dreamers is PR-style hooey. For example, it’s often said — indeed, former president Barack Obama just recently said — that the approximately 690,000 dreamers were “brought to this country by their parents.” Well, many were. But that’s not required to qualify as a protected dreamer under the various plans, including Obama’s. You just have to have entered the country illegally before age 16. You could have decided to sneak in against your parents’ wishes. You’re still a dreamer! Likewise, we’re told dreamers are college-bound high school grads or military personnel. That’s an exaggeration. All that’s actually required is that the dreamer enroll in a high school course or an “alternative,” including online courses and English-as-a-second-language classes. Under Obama’s now-suspended program, you didn’t even have to stay enrolled. Compared with the general population, dreamers are not especially highly skilled. A recent survey for several pro-dreamer groups, with participants recruited by those groups, found that while most dreamers are not in school, the vast majority work. But their median hourly wage is only $15.34, meaning that many are competing with hard-pressed lower-skilled Americans. The dreamers you read about have typically been carefully selected for their appeal. They’re valedictorians. They’re first responders. They’re curing diseases. They root for the Yankees. They want to serve in the Army. If dreamers are the poster children for the much larger undocumented population, these are the poster children for the poster children. Still, taking the dreamers as a whole, not just the dreamiest of them, they represent an appealing group of would-be citizens. So why not show compassion and legalize them? Because, as is often the case, the pursuit of pure compassion comes with harmful side effects. First, it would create perverse incentives. Can you imagine a stronger incentive for illegal immigration than the idea that if you sneak into the country your kids will get to be U.S. citizens? Sure, the protections don’t currently apply to recent entrants — under Obama’s plan, you had to have come before 2007. But those dates can be changed — Obama himself tried to do it once. And the rationale for rewarding those who arrive when young — that they’re here through “no fault of their own” and know only America, etc. — can apply on into the future, with no apparent stopping point. What about the poor kids who came in 2008? 2018? There’s a reason no country has a rule that if you sneak in as a minor, you’re a citizen. We’d be inviting the world. Second, it would have knock-on effects. Under “chain migration” rules established in 1965 — ironically as a sop to conservatives, who foolishly thought that they’d boost European inflows — new citizens can bring in their siblings and adult children, who can bring in their siblings and in-laws, until whole villages have moved to the United States. That means today’s 690,000 dreamers would quickly become millions of newcomers, who may well be low-skilled and who would almost certainly include the parents who brought them — the ones who, in theory, are at fault. There are obvious, sensible ways to control these side effects. Pair any dreamer amnesty with a major upgrade to our system to prevent a new undocumented wave — such as a mandatory extension of E-Verify, the system that lets employers check on the legal status of hires. Curtail the right to bring in distant relatives. Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) has proposed such a compromise — and it would be easy to compromise on his compromise, say by cutting back on chain migration only by the number of people that the new Dream Act adds to the citizenry. The president could declare a one-time act of mercy for those who came here during the pre-Trump Era of Laxity, but make clear the game was changed for future entrants. Why wouldn’t Democrats jump at such a deal? For years they’ve been touting “comprehensive immigration reform,” a mix of amnesty with stepped-up enforcement to prevent another undocumented surge. But the Dream Act is uncomprehensive. It’s all amnesty, no prevention — let alone any compensating reduction in legal inflows. It’s hard to avoid the thought that Democrats (and Republicans who support the Dream Act) aren’t really interested in preventing illegal inflows. They’re not inclined to take Cotton up on his deal because they don’t think they have to. If they win, we’ll get the compassion without dealing with its consequences. That would be especially unfortunate given the signs that Trump’s immigration crackdown, simply stepping up enforcement of current laws, is already helping to tighten the low end of the labor market and boost wages of low-skilled workers. News organizations are featuring stories from employers who aren’t getting their usual supply of undocumented workers and are forced to take radical measures — such as raising wages. Proof of this connection, in the public mind, may be what terrifies the pro-immigration lobby the most.)

So help me God.” . . . An analysis of contributions to the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), an umbrella charitable effort for federal employees, demonstrates “federal donors clearly reacted to the election of Trump in 2016, providing several charities with a sizable Anti-Trump bounce in their pledge results,” Marshall Strauss, chief executive of the Workplace Giving Alliance, said in an email Friday to his board of directors. The Alliance is a coalition of CFC organizations and reports on federal employee giving. “For example,” Strauss continued, “the American Civil Liberties Union [Foundation] was up almost 400 percent in comparison with its 2015 CFC results, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) saw its pledge number jump by 345 percent, and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) saw its pledge total jump 180 percent.” These organizations have taken principled stands against Trump’s harmful policies: ACLU says Trump wants to “Enshrine a Business Right to Discriminate Into the Constitution.” SPLC President Richard Cohen wrote about “the malignant bigotry at the heart of President Trump’s agenda.” NRDC tracks “Trumps attacks on the environment.” Planned Parenthood, the Sierra Club and the National Park Foundation also received significantly more in donations, according to the report.)

Illegals are not forced to come to America, except those who were brought to America while they were children. Those who bring children to America illegally should be equated with slave owners. http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2017-09-10/tom-kacich-trump-supporter-joins-run-against-rauner.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: And Ray Tranchant of Catlin is the lieutenant governor candidate on what may be an even longer shot: Chicagoan William Kelly’s intraparty challenge to Gov. Bruce Rauner. Tranchant is a Navy veteran and a supporter of President Trump who said he has never run for office before. The two big reasons he wants to serve with Kelly, he said, are fiscal responsibility and illegal immigration. Tranchant, whose 16-year-old daughter Tessa was killed by an illegal immigrant from Mexico in an auto accident 10 years ago in Virginia Beach, Va., said he is particularly upset by Rauner’s decision last month to sign the Illinois TRUST Act, which restricts local law enforcement from collaborating with federal immigration agents to detain anyone unless the federal officials have a warrant. Tranchant called the legislation “a sanctuary bill” that would protect hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants in the Chicago area who now, he predicted, will move downstate. “We believe that they’re going to get out of there (Chicago), mainly come here, look for jobs and get aid and live in a better and safer environment,” said Tranchant, who said he “is in his early 60s” and had retained his Illinois residency even while in the military. “That’s going to cost our schools and services a lot of money. We don’t think it’s good.” Kelly, a conservative radio host in the Chicago area, called Rauner “the new Judas of the Republican Party” for signing the immigration legislation. “Today, unlike Bruce Rauner, we stand proudly with President Trump and the federal government,” Kelly said last week. “I will recall Rauner by defeating him in the 2018 GOP primary and repeal Illinois’ sanctuary state status by executive order. As governor, my first act will be to recognize the federal government’s exclusive power to make and enforce immigration law.” Tranchant said he also was upset with Rauner for allowing the state to operate without a budget for more than two years. “That hurts the state of Illinois as well,” said Tranchant. “Many of my friends who are Democrats voted for him because they wanted a change and they didn’t want the same old incestuous relationship that (former Gov.) Pat Quinn had with (House Speaker Michael) Madigan. We figured this guy was just like Trump, would make a difference, and so far, all he’s done is isolated himself and refused to do things.” In order to get on the ballot, Kelly, Tranchant and their allies will have to collect 5,000 to 10,000 signatures between now and early December. “We’ll get the 5,000 signatures,” Tranchant deadpanned. “I’ve got that many friends on Facebook.”)

Controversies surrounding the Republican president are captivating the country — and the world — and have some Republicans worried about how they will affect party fortunes in congressional midterms and other elections in 2018. But don’t look for those topics to be on the agenda when about 2,000 Republicans from Michigan and across the nation gather on Mackinac Island Sept. 22-24 for the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference — a major policy confab held every two years. Party leaders say the conference will be all about unity, and the focus will be on what’s happening in Michigan — not Washington, D.C. “As a party, we support the president — we support his policies,” Michigan Republican Party Chairman Ron Weiser said in an interview. “I don’t think there’s going to be any kind of controversy.” Tax reform, repeal and replace of Obamacare, immigration and infrastructure “are important and worthy of conversations,” said state party spokeswoman Sarah Anderson. But “unfortunately, we have a limited time for the conference, so there wasn’t a space for panels on those issues.” In addition to Gov. Rick Snyder, other state Republican leaders and members of Congress, speakers will include Trump loyalists such as Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens and U.S. Education Secretary and west Michigan businesswoman Betsy DeVos. Panel sessions will feature topics such as the influence of women in the party, successful Michigan business leaders, the news media, and “Michigan leading the nation” in terms of domestic policies and job creation. Though he comes from a neighboring state and is maintaining a high profile after his unsuccessful bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, don’t look for Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a frequent Trump critic, to be taking a ferry across the Straits of Mackinac. The emphasis on unity is reflected in the conference theme, “Together We Rise.” The agenda, which is still being finalized, also includes former Michigan Gov. John Engler and former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, who chaired the House oversight committee and is now a Fox News contributor. Organizers had hoped U.S. Vice President Mike Pence would be among the speakers, but he is unable to attend due to security complications, Weiser said.)
