ILLINOIS FAMILY INSTITUTE
— They Were Warned – Kathy Valente (DIERSEN: QUESTION TO ASK CANDIDATES: What have you done and what will you do to discourage the sale and use of pot?)
https://illinoisfamily.org/uncategorized/they-were-warned/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Big Marijuana and its foolish proponents easily convinced Illinois state lawmakers that legalization would decrease black market trade and ease the burden on our criminal justice system. IFI warned them that this naive notion was contradicted by the facts, and we shared ample evidence from states that had already approved “recreational” marijuana. The evidence is clear: the black market had been thriving because of legalization. Now we read that the California cannabis industry is in big trouble and want lawmakers to do something about it. What’s their problem? The black market is doing 73 percent of California’s marijuana business – or $8.7 billion. California is considered to be the largest cannabis market in the world. While 2019 is not yet over, it’s estimated that their total marijuana sales will top nearly $12 billion. Yes, the black market is thriving on the left coast, growing by leaps and bounds, and threatening to bury a quasi-legitimate (sic) industry. So much for the influx of revenue they’re anticipating.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg says employees at his news organization need to accept restrictions with their paycheck, including the ban on investigating their boss. Bloomberg, billionaire founder of Bloomberg News, was asked in a CBS News interview about rules put in place when he announced his candidacy: The organization’s reporters are not allowed to probe him and his finances, or any of his Democratic rivals. Bloomberg News says the restriction does not apply to President Donald Trump as the government’s leader. FORBES
— The Impact Of Unemployment On Male Well-Being – Adi Gaskell (DIERSEN: I have been underemployed since 1976 and unemployed since 1997.)
https://www.forbes.com/sites/adigaskell/2019/12/06/the-impact-of-unemployment-on-male-wellbeing/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The impact of unemployment on well-being is well documented, although research from a few years ago suggested that it’s “good work” rather than just work that is the key to mental well-being. With the traditional gender roles presenting the role of men as the bread winner for the family, it seems logical that unemployment would pose a particular burden on men, and that was the subject of a recent report from the IZA World of Labor. The report reveals that the number of working-age men outside the labor force is on the rise around the world, with this corresponding with a rise in stress and other mental health issues, including depression and anger. Indeed, male unemployment is also linked to a range of physical health concerns, including suicide and substance abuse that are raising mortality rates across the United States. The researchers believe the issues of male unemployment are strongest among low-skilled labor, with those in work also suffering from declining wages and status. This often ultimately results in men dropping out of the labor force entirely. Many of the issues facing unemployed men revolve around a loss of hope, and such issues were consistent around the world. That many unemployed men resort to opioid abuse merely exacerbates their slide into poor mental well-being. This is often accompanied by marriage failure and a decline in civic or religious participation. One’s social standing was a key factor in this, as the image and self-esteem of many working class men is wrapped up in their hard work ethic, so being unemployed carries considerable stigma.)

— How to spot microaggressions at work – Lydia Smith (DIERSEN: Microaggressions are bad, but adverse actions are worse. My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take a $19,568 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. — The Fact-Check Industry Has our investment in debunking worked? – Emily Bell (DIERSEN: What qualifications do my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have to be fact checkers? While I worked for GAO 1980-1997, the last 11 years of which at GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $98,198-$127,654, I increasingly worked as a referencer, that is, as a fact checker. That work required assuring the accuracy and support for each and every word, number, table, graph, chart, conclusion, opinion, and recommendation in GAO reports. I worked for IRS 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $82,279-$93,592. (FROM THE ARTICLE: The report recommends Congress significantly ramp up its technical expertise on committees, and at support agencies like the Government Accountability Office and the Congressional Research Service. A recent study by Harvard’s Belfer Center came to a similar conclusion, finding that “Congress has not shown that it has the necessary capacity and expertise to fully exercise its constitutional duties … (and) has appeared unprepared to reckon with emerging technologies and their effects on society.” . . . There have also been efforts within GAO to bolster its science and technology capabilities, leading to the creation of the Science, Technology Assessment, and Analytics team, as well as a new Center for Strategic Foresight. Restoring Congress’ foresight and analytical capabilities would be an important step toward reestablishing the institution’s place as the “first branch.” Both GAO and OTA were designed to serve the major policy priorities of committees, and thus offer a high return on investment per dollar spent for taxpayers. Nonetheless, it’s not the only upgrade needed.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the present era, national politics are shaped by winning intra-party primary elections, which are largely captured by activists at polar extremes. The great swath of us in the middle are marginalized, having little impact on who become candidates. I propose a nationwide competition — with big prizes — among teams at our business school MBA programs, to develop the best “business plan” for creation and implementation of a new, competitive political party.)

NASDAQ
— Why 60% Qualified Is Enough, According to a Recruiter (DIERSEN: GAO audits IRS. In 1980, when I was 31 years old, according to the Democrats who ran GAO, I was NOT qualified to transfer in from IRS as a GS-12 Step 5, currently $93,592/year. They insisted that I accept a downgrade to GS-9 Step 10, currently $74,024/year, a pay cut of $19,568/year (21%) in today’s dollars. They never would have done that if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, or veteran. I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979. I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul. I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976. I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $82,579-$93,592/year. I had earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU in 1970. Much of what I did for IRS was very similar to what I would be doing for GAO including interviewing, gathering data, summarizing data, analyzing data, report writing, and making recommendations.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: If you’re a woman who has ever embarked on a job search, you may have heard the buzz: Women and men tend to approach job searching differently. In 2013, HP released a report stating women usually apply for jobs only if they meet 100% of the requirements. In many cases, women view a job description as a list of skills and qualifications they should already have instead of skills they can develop as they learn the job. Men, on the other hand, usually apply if they meet 60% of the requirements. While this statistic certainly does not apply to all job seekers, it does resonate with many women in the workforce.)

If I was 23, 24, or 25 today, IRS would not promote me like it did in 1972, 1973, and 1974. If was 31 today, GAO would not offer me a job like it did in 1980. (FROM THE BILL: “(2) JOURNALIST.—The term ‘journalist’ means an individual who— “(A) is an employee, independent contractor, or agent of an entity or service that disseminates news or information— “(i) by means of a newspaper, nonfiction book, wire service, news agency, news website, mobile application or other news or information service (whether distributed digitally or otherwise), news program, magazine, or other periodical (whether in print, electronic, or other format); or “(ii) through a television broadcast, radio broadcast, multichannel video programming distributor (as defined in section 602 of the Communications Act of 1934 (47 U.S.C. 522)), or motion picture for public showing; and “(B) engages in newsgathering with the primary intent to investigate an event or procure material in order to disseminate to the public news or information concerning a local, national, or international event or other matter of public interest. “(3) NEWSGATHERING.—The term ‘newsgathering’ means engaging in regular gathering, preparation, collection, photographing, recording, writing, editing, reporting, or publishing concerning a local, national, or international event or other matter of public interest.)

Unless you’re in politics or your primary volunteer experience is related, stay away from discussing your beliefs or affiliations. If you do have professional or volunteer experience, be sure to focus on the outcomes and lessons you learned that can be applied in the role you’re interviewing for, rather than advocating for a politician, party or issue.)
— What NOT to talk about in a job interview (family plans) – Christina Brennan (DIERSEN: Government is nasty, politics is nasty, Democrats are nasty. My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates knew from Money Magazine’s February 1978 4-page article on my wife and I that we planned to have children. After my wife and I gave up trying to have children, after we did not adopt, and after we did not become foster parents, they hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I had lied about our family plans and that I should be punished severely for that. While virtually all of my coworkers viewed travel assignments positively and requested travel assignments, I had not requested travel assignments because my wife and I were trying to start a family. In 1989, to punish me for giving up trying to start a family, my Democrat GAO superiors threw me off audits of IRS and assigned me a 6-month travel assignment in Rock Island.)
https://www.theladders.com/career-advice/what-not-to-talk-about-in-a-job-interview
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Family plans While pregnancy or parenthood discrimination is illegal and interviewers can’t ask if you’re in a relationship or have kids, you may still find yourself weaving these personal details into a story or talking about your future. Unfortunately, expressing future family plans can still create red flags, especially for women.)

Virtually all of them were anti-DINK (dual income, no kids). Prior to 1978 when I got married, they were furious that I did not have a spouse or children to support like they did. After 1978, they were even more furious that my wife had a good job, we gave up trying to have children, we did not adopt, and we did not become foster parents.)

INDIANAPOLIS BUSINESS JOURNAL
— Let’s do better finding candidates for next election – Adrianne Slash (DIERSEN: Are you a potential candidate? What do the following think of you and think of those who share your demographics: those who run your municipality, your township/ward, your county, Illinois, America, your township/ward political organization, your county political organization, your representative on your political party’s State Central Committee, your state political party, and those who have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout in your municipality, township/ward, county, state, and America? The proof is in the pudding. The proof is who the aforesaid a) encourage to run for offices and b) discourage from running. Ever-increasingly, in Wheaton, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, in Illinois, and in America, the more of the following that you are, the more that the majority of the aforesaid discourage you from running: Trump supporter, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, gun owner, German American, draft avoider, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
https://www.ibj.com/articles/slash-lets-do-better-finding-candidates-for-next-election
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Balance should not be just an idea, it ought to be a priority goal for all. Elections always have consequences and one consequence we should look into after the 2019 municipal election is a lack of balance on the local front. Less than 25% of Marion County voters participated in an election that sets the leadership that hits closest to home for the next four years. These results are what we get when the community is not so into the election. All the issues that rise to the top are likewise the priorities of the 25% who were interested. We can do better, but it starts long before Election Day, long before the primary, long before slating conventions. It happens as candidates are identified. Communities deserve candidates who reflect the community, as it exists at the time of the election, not reflective of a line started long ago that lets the next one simply get called up. Communities deserve the right candidate for right now—candidates who are inspired, who have been working, who are in it for the people, who understand the current needs and bring with them the expertise required to get the work done. I am convinced that our low turnout is tied to a lack of inspiration and interest in the processes, and whom we have running. If you look at the Indianapolis City-County Council races, the candidates who have personal ties to their districts have been able to draw their support systems, networks and, ultimately, neighbors to the polls. These communities had higher turnout. Imagine a year in which the candidate pool is representative of the people and chosen for the candidates’ community-level work and for the good of the people, not for commitment to party. Consider what it would look like to have an election cycle with full community buy-in—one in which candidates entered with excitement and fresh community-driven ideas.)

— Only by lawless logic would we include illegal aliens in Census – Adam Lange, Vice Chairman, Brewster Republican Town Committee
https://www.capecodtimes.com/opinion/20191123/only-by-lawless-logic-would-we-include-illegal-aliens-in-census
(FROM THE LETTER: I attended the 2020 Census event at Barnstable Town Hall on Nov. 13. It confirmed how misguided our state government has grown, and reminded me how Donald Trump got elected in 2016. Secretary of State William Galvin told a packed room about his efforts to count everyone in next year’s census. He highlighted that illegal aliens should be included in the count, since their information cannot be shared with other government agencies (aka law enforcement). The U.S. Census determines who receives a finite amount of federal funding and apportions congressional seats. When Massachusetts government officials scheme to inflate their numbers by including the estimated 270,000 illegal aliens for whom they have created a sanctuary, it siphons off money and representation from real Americans in law-abiding states. When congressional seats and Electoral College votes are unfairly distributed, the 14th Amendment’s “one person, one vote” standard is violated. This lawless logic promoted by liberal state officials puts Americans last, and most likely will result in President Trump’s reelection in 2020.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facebook Inc. is discussing increasing the minimum number of people who can be targeted in political ads on its platform from 100 to a few thousand, according to people familiar with the matter. Alphabet Inc. ’s Google said on Wednesday that advertisers would no longer be able to target political messages based on users’ interests inferred from their browsing or search histories. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_Officer_Personnel_Management_Act

(FROM THE POSTING: DOPMA created stable and predictable career paths, institutionalized relatively short careers compared to private industry, and mandated the military adopt an “up or out” personnel management strategy (requiring officers who failed selection for promotion to be removed from the service). Although DOPMA accomplished many of its intended goals, many provisions and consequences of the legislation remain controversial. . .The DOPMA “system” generally provides two opportunities to advance to the next rank. Officers typically will go before selection boards in cohorts based on the year they were commissioned. The majority of officers are promoted “in zone” (or “primary zone”); officers not selected will go before the next board (“above zone”), typically held a year later. Officers who are not selected “above zone” (twice fail promotion) are required to separate from the service, retire if eligible, or by exception may continue to serve until retirement in their current grade (but will never again be considered for promotion). At the discretion of the services a small number of promotions may go to exceptional officers (“below zone”) who are promoted one or two years ahead of their cohort. Congress desired “due course” officers (those selected in the primary zone) to be promoted within set windows based on time served in the current grade and cumulative years of service. While not specified in DOPMA, Department of Defense policy established targets for selection to the next grade, as a percentage from the surviving cohort. Desired promotion rates and reporting requirements of service board results are regularly published by DoD. Current promotion guidelines are as follows:)
