CBS2
— Trump’s Purple Heart Draws Rebuke From Illinois Vets – Charlie De Mar
http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2016/08/02/trumps-purple-heart-draws-rebuke-from-illinois-vets/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Tuesday showed off a Purple Heart he received from a supporter, just days after feuding with the parents of a U.S. soldier killed in action. “I always wanted to get the Purple Heart,” he said at a campaign stop Tuesday. “This was much easier, but I tell you it was such an honor.” The Purple Heart is given to soldiers who are wounded in combat and many veterans are upset the Trump accepted it, especially after he received five deferments to avoid the Vietnam War. Thomas Kapsalis received a Purple Heart in World War II, after he was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. His leg was nearly blown off and he still has shrapnel in his body. “All hell broke loose, airplanes coming and bombing us, and I was up on the front lines,” he told CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar. He was held captive for five months and was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice. When he enlisted, he said, he was “afraid to even shoot my rifle.” “You cannot get the Purple Heart unless you shed blood,” Kapsalis said. Trump’s remarks are not sitting well with him. “I don’t understand why he’s saying that,” Kapsalis said. Illinois congresswoman Tammy Duckworth posted a photo on Twitter of her with her Purple Heart, with a message directed at Donald Trump.)

— Without clout, judge says no appeal in boring job – Dan Mihalopoulos  (DIERSEN: What do you do and how boring is it?  I spend 10+ hours each and every day putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out.  What I do is not boring at all, but it is extremely stressful. I am constantly reminded of how individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries that are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors ARE INCREASINGLY SUCCESSFUL IN GETTING RID OF THOSE WHO ARE Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.  I am constantly reminded of the successes that those who promote dependency on government; LGBTQ activity; abortion; mass/illegal immigration; abolition of the First and Second Amendments; pot, promiscuity, booze, gambling and other vices; political affiliation discrimination; reverse discrimination; age discrimination; etc. are having.)

DAILY HERALD
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD WITH GRAPHICS: Taxpayers cover $4 million in teachers’ college costs – Jake Griffin  (DIERSEN: While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, except for some small tuition reimbursements, I used my time and my money to earn a job-related bachelor’s degree, three job-related master’s degrees, and two job-related professional certifications. My Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that the courses a) were not job-related, b) did not help me carry out my job duties, c) were taken by me to get a job in the private sector, and d) were a distraction.  They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160803/news/160809691/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Taxpayers in 70 suburban school districts paid more than $4 million last year to send 3,085 teachers back to college. The tuition reimbursement programs are meant to attract and keep teachers. But they do more than that. Since teachers’ salaries are commonly tied to their education levels, taxpayers essentially are paying to help teachers make more money. And since salaries are the biggest driver of teacher pension costs, those taxpayer-funded classes are also helping increase pension obligations. Tuition reimbursement for teachers came to nearly a half-million dollars in both Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 and Northwest Suburban High School District 214. Other school districts spent far less, and some, like Elgin Area School District U-46 and Naperville Unit District 203, have no tuition coverage for teachers and spent nothing. That’s according to school district financial records obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests.)

— Rauner signs bill altering health care ‘right of conscience’ law – Dean Olsen (DIERSEN: Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform.  In Illinois, if you are not going to defend and advance the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform, you should not seek or hold any kind of government or political office as a Republican.  The Illinois Democrat Party (IDP) platform promotes abortion.  The IRP platform discourages abortion.  One could argue that if you sign bills that promote the IDP platform, you are a Democrat.)
http://www.sj-r.com/news/20160802/rauner-signs-bill-altering-health-care-right-of-conscience-law
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Opponents of the bill included the Illinois Family Institute, which said the changes in the more than 40-year-old law — recognized previously as one of the broadest in the country — will reduce religious freedom. “It is going to force pro-life doctors and nurses to violate their conscience,” David E. Smith, executive director of the not-for-profit institute, said Tuesday. However, Brigid Leahy, Planned Parenthood’s director of public policy, said: “This is not a violation of religious freedom. The whole purpose of this is to prevent harm. Religious rights should not be allowed to cause harm to another person.” Smith said the Tinley Park-based institute was “extremely disappointed” in Rauner. “We thought he was for smaller government and individual rights,” Smith said. “Instead, he chose to side with the Democrats and tyrannical government.” Asked to respond, Rauner spokesman Andrew Flach said in an email, without elaborating, that Rauner “has never pushed a social agenda and remains committed to government, economic and education reforms that can turn around Illinois.”)

PR NEWSWIRE
— Election 2016: How Leaders Can Keep Employees Focused on Work, Not Politics – Mary C. Kelly and Peter B. Stark (DIERSEN: Of course, needless-to-say, employers who are Democrat focus on a) not hiring, retaining, or promoting Republicans and b) getting rid of their employees who are Republican.)
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/election-2016-how-leaders-can-keep-employees-focused-on-work-not-politics-300308374.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As the Presidential election heats up, employees are spending more time watching the news, checking their social media accounts and hanging out by the water cooler discussing the candidates – all at the expense of lost productivity and possibly igniting personnel conflicts that will simmer long after the votes are cast. “This election year is running high on emotion, ugly rhetoric, and polarization. Unfortunately, some of the angst associated with the issues of the election are creeping into the workplace. People are angry. Angry people are less productive. What does a great leader do?” asks Mary C. Kelly, PhD., co-author of the new leadership book, “Why Leaders Fail.” She and co-author, Peter B. Stark created a list of five guidelines for leaders who want to succeed: 1. Raise the bar and set expectations for performance. Employees who have a lot of time to talk about politics do not have enough to do. Make it clear to your teams that what we do is important, and we need everyone to focus on doing their job to succeed. 2. Demand a culture of respect. Make sure everyone knows that there will always be differences of opinions, but in the workplace we will always have a culture of respect. You don’t have to like other people’s opinions, but you do have to respect the fact that they are entitled to opinions that are different from yours. You may not like someone’s politics, but that doesn’t mean you get to disrespect them. 3. Remind employees of uniting factors. Ultimately what unites us is a desire to work, provide for our families, and make a difference in the world. We all want to be successful, support others, and be a positive role model in the community. Remind people that at work, we need to stay focused on what unites us: the mission, vision and goals of the company. 4. Agree to disagree. Leaders know not everyone is going to agree on every decision or every issue, and that is true in the workplace as well as politics Allow people the freedom to respectfully discuss, but make sure the diatribe remains thoughtful, civil, and respectful. 5. Limit distractions. Most of our clients in the business world have one thing in common. They complain they have way too much to do and not enough time to get all their work done. We cannot waste time with distraction. Leaders can help limit distractions by holding people accountable for the on-time achievement of their goals. Emotions are running high this year because voters perceive that their leaders have failed them. In their 2016 book, “Why Leaders Fail and the 7 Prescriptions for Success” the authors analyze why good people, when promoted, hired or elected, so often fail. One of the top failures happens when leaders lose the trust of the people they are supposed to lead. “Trust is hard to earn and easy to lose,” said Stark, CEO of Peter Barron Stark Companies says. “And it can happen when leaders often are not paying attention to what matters to their people.” Another failure is when leaders try so hard to be popular that they allow their need to be liked to interfere or even dictate their decision. “We all want to be liked on some level,” agrees Kelly, CEO of Productive Leaders, “but relying on popularity to run an organization guarantees failure.” Good leadership is difficult and it can be tough, especially when the employees are worried about outside influences. Leaders have to stay focused so their people stay focused. Leadership means making decisions that are right for the organization and its people.)

http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2016-08-02/shes-trump.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the past few months, Maria Vasquez has been un-friended by one Facebook connection after another. The Latina-American’s crime: actively supporting the Republican party’s polarizing presidential candidate, to the extent that she has recently been appointed chief of a group called Latinas for Trump Illinois. In that role, the Urbana resident, who works for a local non-profit, is tasked with spreading the message of Donald Trump’s campaign and planning events in the area. “I saw something on social media that was a Facebook group ‘Latinas for Trump’ and that intrigued me because that was something I wanted to be a part of, being Latino,” Vasquez said. Another part of the new position involves helping devise a strategy for how to best educate Latino-Americans about Trump, who Vasquez admits isn’t looked at too favorably within that community. It’s not all his fault, she says. “Some of (Trump’s) recent comments have been distorted, I believe, by the media,” she said. Vasquez says she supports Trump because he’s not the typical politician hiding behind scripted speeches and making promises he knows he can’t keep. As a supporter, some of the disagreements she has had have been with people who wonder how she can support a candidate who said Mexican immigrants were bringing drugs, crime and rapists across the border and who claimed a judge overseeing a lawsuit against Trump University was biased because of his Mexican heritage. “It all comes from the love and passion he has for this country and honestly, all Americans should have this love for the country,” Vasquez said. “This country is in a bad deal. It seems we have become the dumping ground for everybody else’s problems. “It’s time to change that and time to start helping ourselves before we can start helping others.” Those views haven’t always been received favorably in Vasquez’s social media circles, leading to her being chopped from many acquaintances’ friends lists.)

http://www.news-gazette.com/opinion/editorials/2016-08-02/legislators-fine-marijuana.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s hard to imagine that the legislation won’t be seen as anything other than what it is — an implicit endorsement of marijuana consumption that can only encourage greater use of a drug whose use already is widespread. That poses an undeniable problem for users who suffer from mental illness. Its consumption also will be problematic for young people whose minds and bodies are still being formed.)

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/289999-depaul-cancels-conservatives-speech
(FROM THE ARTICLE: DePaul University has revoked its invitation for conservative political commentator Ben Shapiro to address students on campus. The private university in Chicago told the school’s Young Americans for Freedom chapter that Shapiro, 32, will not be permitted to enter the campus due to “security concerns.” “Given the experiences and security concerns that some other schools have had with Ben Shapiro speaking on their campuses, DePaul cannot agree to allow him to speak on our campus at this time,” wrote Bob Janis, DePaul’s vice president of operations. Shapiro responded with a post on Twitter Monday morning that called those in power at DePaul “cowards.” He also invited those opposed to the decision to write to DePaul’s dean of students, David Miller. Last February, California State University attempted to block Shapiro from speaking on campus, but the former Breitbart columnist showed up anyway. Angry protesters pulled a fire alarm and blocked doors to the event, which led police to escort Shapiro off campus for his own safety. The Young Americas Foundation released a statement late Monday morning that blamed the left for DePaul’s decision to cancel Shapiro’s speech and warned it would limit constitutional freedoms. “For the past six months we have worked with Ben on a high-profile tour of college campuses and witnessed with our own eyes the vicious and threatening behavior of tyrannical leftists who have been programmed by progressive administrators to silence all speech they disagree with — If DePaul cannot trust its delicate liberal snowflake students and administrators to allow Ben to speak his mind safely and freely, it has utterly failed in its mission to ‘[foster] a community that welcomes open discourse.’ “If DePaul does not reverse its decision to ban Ben, it must immediately remove any claim to support free speech and expression from its website and marketing materials or become a fraudulent laughingstock,” the statement concluded. DePaul recently blocked Breitbart commentator Milo Yiannopoulos from attending a College Republicans event, arguing that his presence would lead to a “hostile environment.” In an earlier visit in May for a speaking event, Yainnopoulos’s podium was stormed by protesters and his microphone was stolen. The Hill has reached out to Shapiro for further comment.)

— 1 in 3 Adults Under Age 45 Still Get Financial Help From Mom and Dad – Alicia Adamczyk
http://time.com/money/4432883/adults-financial-help-parents-cell-phone/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For parents these days, supporting your child often doesn’t end when they turn 18.  A survey by the Society of Grownups found that one in three adults between the ages of 21 and 45 receive some form of financial support from their parents, MarketWatch reports. Paying for their child’s cellphone bill is the most common type of aid, with 17% of respondents saying their parents foot the bill. After cellphones, food, bills (such as utilities and cable), and insurance are the things parents help pay for most often. Other young people reported their parents help them with “fun” expenses, rent, clothing, and student loan bills, though those responses weren’t as common. While some may use this as further proof that all millennials are lazy and entitled, Nondini Naqui, the chief executive of Society of Grownups, says it’s more a reflection of the rising costs of living millennials must contend with: student loan debt, rising rent and food costs, and stagnate wages all compound, and something has to give. “These are people who are really forging their own way forward, they’re responsible, they take accountability,” Naqui said. But at the same time, “they’re really getting squeezed.”  So why are parents paying for cellphone bills more often than anything else? MarketWatch writes that it’s largely a matter of inertia; parents were already likely paying for the family plan when their kids lived at home, and just kept paying. Writes MW, “[t]he cellphone bill is the last vestige of their financial ties to their parents and they haven’t severed it, mostly because it’s more trouble than it’s worth.”)

http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/pope-not-right-to-talk-about-violent-terrorist-islam/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Pope Francis said Sunday he won’t label Islam as “terrorist” because that would be unfair and not true. Reporters aboard the papal plane flying him home after a pilgrimage to Poland, the day after extremists slit the throat of an elderly priest celebrating Mass in a French church, asked him why he never uses the word “Islam” to describe terrorism or other violence. While in Poland, Francis made an unscheduled stop at a church in Krakow to implore God to protect people from the “devastating wave” of terrorism in many parts of the world. When asked why he didn’t describe the priest’s murder and other attacks as Islamic terrorism, Francis replied he won’t do that because “it’s not right to identify Islam with violence. It’s not right and it’s not true.”  “I believe that in every religion there is always a little fundamentalist group,” he said. “I don’t like to talk of Islamic violence because, every day, when I go through the newspapers, I see violence, this man who girls his girlfriend, another who kills his mother-in-law,” Francis said, in apparent reference to crime news in predominantly Catholic Italy. “And these are baptized Catholics. If I speak of Islamic violence, then I have to speak of Catholic violence.” “In Islam, not all are violent, not all the Catholics are violent,” he said. “It’s like a fruit salad, everything’s in there. Noting he has spoken with imams, he concluded: “I know how they think, they are looking for peace.”  As for ISIS, he said, the Islamic State group “presents itself with a violent identity card, but that’s not Islam.” Francis spoke on the day when Muslims in France and Italy flocked to Sunday Mass in a show of interfaith solidarity following a string of extremist attacks threatening to sharpen religious divides across Europe.)

http://foxillinois.com/news/local/christian-county-sheriff-reacts-to-new-marijuana-law-08-01-2016
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Christian County sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp is condemning Illinois’ new marijuana decriminalization law. Governor Bruce Rauner signed the bill Friday removing criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana. Now possession of 10 grams of marijuana or less is considered a civil violation, similar to a traffic ticket. Kettelkamp says the change won’t save his department time, because drugs can lead to more serious crimes. “I think this is a big mistake for our legislators. I just wish the legislators would just spend one day, or a couple days, in law enforcement’s shoes and see from the people that use marijuana,” said Kettelkamp. Kettelkamp tells us he’s worried the new law sends the wrong message to kids who might now think it’s acceptable to use marijuana.)

http://www.nytimes.com/1996/03/13/us/seeking-return-to-ways-of-patronage-in-politics.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It is no secret that the fabled Democratic machine in Chicago stole a vote or two for John F. Kennedy in the 1960 Presidential election. It is less well-known that Republicans in downstate Illinois were padding the vote for Richard M. Nixon. In fact, while political machines have traditionally been regarded as the offspring of the Democratic Party in big cities, the Illinois Republican Party has hardly been a slouch in flexing its political muscle, known in the state simply as clout. The party has long dominated the suburbs and smaller cities, and throughout the 1980’s, when James R. Thompson was Governor, a job applicant typically needed a letter of endorsement from a party leader. So perhaps it is fitting that Republican politicians here are rising to the defense of political patronage. In 1990 the United States Supreme Court, ruling in a case brought by five frustrated job seekers against the Republican Party of Illinois, outlawed political favoritism in all government hiring except for policy-making posts, saying that only merit should count. This was a strange concept in Illinois, where the spoils system had always been rather the point of politics. This spring the issue is heading for the Court again in a different case, and Gov. Jim Edgar, a Republican, filed a brief last month asking the Justices to reverse its ban on government favoritism. He argues that patronage actually helps the democratic system. As another top Republican here, State Representative Lee Daniels, put it, patronage “doesn’t need to be a dirty word.” In response, civil libertarians say it is an embarrassment for the state to have political leaders arguing against meritocracy. “It seems only in Illinois,” said Harvey Grossman, the head of the American Civil Liberties Union office in Chicago, “would state officials be willing to publicly endorse the corrosive practice” of patronage. But Jeffrey Coleman, a lawyer for Governor Edgar, said it was simply logical for a political leader to prefer workers who are friends, rather than foes. “George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson and every administration at the Federal and state level for 200 years used political consideration in hiring,” Mr. Coleman said. “And it seems rather ironic that nine men and women who were appointed to the Supreme Court for political reasons would say that politics should play no role in the selection of public employees.”)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/careers/ijustworkhere/ct-huppke-work-advice-knowledge-transfer-0731-biz-20160728-column.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As members of the baby-boom generation continue to selfishly retire, waltzing off to engage in ridiculous activities like “enjoying life” and “relaxing,” the rest of us are left with the drudgery of work and, in many cases, a notable lack of institutional knowledge. According to the Pew Research Center, 10,000 baby boomers are reaching age 65 each day. While it’s been on the horizon for years, the reality of the boomer brain drain is still catching companies off guard, making “knowledge transfer” the buzzword du jour. Before veteran workers depart, it’s crucial they pass along not just a rough outline of how they do their jobs or a filing cabinet stuffed with old manuals and reports but some of the deeper knowledge gained from years of experience. It’s something Dorothy Leonard, a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School and co-founder of the consulting firm Leonard-Barton Group, calls “tacit knowledge.”)

http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2016-07-31/tom-kacich-hillary-made-news-even-when-she-was-22.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: By the time she was 22 years old Hillary Rodham had been elected student body president at Wellesley College, had given the first-ever student commencement speech at the Massachusetts college that is still exclusively for women, had been featured in an issue of Life magazine, had been accused on the front page of the Boston Globe of upstaging a U.S. senator and had been denounced in an editorial by her hometown newspaper, the Chicago Tribune. Even 900 miles away at the University of Illinois, Rodham was mentioned by Illinois Gov. Richard Ogilvie in a commencement address as representative of the student idealism of that time. All of that attention 47 or more years ago undoubtedly prepared Rodham — the future Hillary Clinton — for a lifetime in the public eye, including a historic run for president. The one-time “Goldwater Girl” from Park Ridge shed her conservative values while at Wellesley and within four years had moved 180 degrees politically, backing anti-war Democrat Sen. Eugene McCarthy for president in 1968. She became a student leader, ran for president of the student government and on May 31, 1969, gave the commencement speech that attracted so much attention. Ruth Adams, the president of Wellesley, introduced Rodham as “cheerful, good humored, good company and a good friend to all of us.” In her prepared remarks Rodham talked mostly of her classes’ time at Wellesley, of protests and demonstrations, and shared power and responsibility, and of the value of education.)

HERALD & REVIEW
— Legislators: Big pay for a part-time job – Editorial  (DIERSEN: Who hints/implies/argues/shouts that you are/were overpaid?  The following hint/imply/argue/shout that the federal government overpaid me: those who are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors. Many millions have not and will not seek a job with the federal government a) because the pay and benefits are terrible, b) because the advancement opportunities are terrible, c) because they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) because they cannot pass a background investigation, e) because they cannot pass a physical examination, f) because they cannot take the demonization, denigration, and condemnation that comes with being a federal employee or federal retiree, and/or g) because they are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and they know that the federal government discriminates against its employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Most folks would say that a salary of $100,000 for a full-time job is a pretty good gig. A six-figure salary for a part-time job is the stuff of fantasy. Except for the Illinois General Assembly, where the majority of members pull down more than $100,000 a year for what is a part-time job. For taxpayers, the news gets worse. When other costs such as pension, mileage, per diem payments and insurance are figured in, taxpayers pay about $32 million a year to the 177 legislators, according to a new report by the Illinois Policy Institute. Illinois legislators are the highest paid in the Midwest and fifth-highest in the nation. It should be noted that this group of 177 legislators have combined to turn Illinois into the worst-run state in the nation. Pay for performance isn’t part of the formula.)

My outstanding parents provided me with room and board during my first 2 years at UIC 1966-1968, weekends during my first semester at NIU in 1969, and the summer of 1969.  That enabled me to work, to earn, and to save enough money to a) buy a new 1968 Oldsmobile in 1967, b) buy a new 1969 Dodge Charger SE in 1968, and c) graduate debt-free from NIU in August of 1970 owning the aforesaid 1969 Dodge Charger SE.)

http://wgntv.com/2016/07/28/chicago-area-college-student-pushing-for-better-life-after-dnc/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: We report all too often on the gun violence that cuts short the lives of young people in our city.  But one Chicago-area college student is trying to re-write that script, and the Democratic National Convention could end up being her ticket to a better life. At first glance, Christine Williams, 19, looks like every other volunteer working at the Wells Fargo Center. She checks DNC credentials and shows people to their seats. But, this Aurora University sophomore is so much more. Williams is from Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, a high crime area, prone to gun violence.  She even knows people who have been shot. But she wants something different for herself and her 2-year-old daughter. “I have goals, I have dreams, I have big dreams,” Christine says. She’s among a handful of college students from across the country picked by the Washington Center, a DC based nonprofit organization, to work at the Democratic National Convention.  With a nearly 3.8 GPA, the political science and business administration major, who’s also minoring in accounting and international studies, hopes this experience will lead to bigger and better things. The trip to Philly was Williams’ first plane ride ever. She admits she wasn’t really into the political process – at first – but now she one day hopes to run for political office, maybe congress or even president, thanks to Hillary Clinton. She knows most people don’t expect someone like her, a teenage mother from the West Side of Chicago, to end up successful. But that’s only pushing her to do more. “It allows me to give my community a voice, and how that just because you’re from a certain part, certain area, doesn’t mean that you can’t become something in life,” she said. Well said, Christine.)

— Trump says Democrats ignore terrorism, crime and illegal immigration – Michael Finnegan
http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-trump-response-democrats-20160728-snap-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump responded Thursday to scorching attacks by President Obama and others at the Democratic convention by saying they were “not talking about the real world” of Islamic terrorism, unchecked illegal immigration, rampant crime, a depleted military and U.S. jobs “pouring into Mexico.” “Boy, am I getting hit,” the Republican presidential nominee complained to supporters at a rally in Davenport, Iowa. Trump denied accusations that he’d outlined a dark vision of America last week at the GOP convention in Cleveland, saying he had offered a “very optimistic” prescription for overcoming the nation’s troubles. The normally unbridled New York businessman was relatively subdued at the first of two Iowa campaign stops. He said he’d resisted the temptation to respond “viciously” to those attacking him at the Democratic gathering this week in Philadelphia. “I was going to hit one guy in particular — a very little guy,” he said in an apparent reference to Michael R. Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor and political independent who branded Trump a “con” in a speech to Democratic delegates on Wednesday. “I was going to hit this guy so hard, his head would spin. He wouldn’t know what the hell happened.” Trump said he was heeding an unnamed governor’s advice to stay focused on attacking Hillary Clinton. “I was going to hit a number of those speakers so hard, their heads would spin,” he said. “They’d never recover. That’s why I still don’t have certain people endorsing me. They still haven’t recovered.” Trump’s restraint came a day after he sparked controversy by inviting Russian cyberhackers to unearth more than 30,000 deleted emails from when Clinton was secretary of State. Critics accused him of borderline treason for encouraging a foreign adversary to intrude illegally into a former Cabinet member’s email. Trump told Fox News on Thursday that his challenge to Russia was meant to be sarcastic. Undaunted by charges that he was too friendly toward President Vladimir Putin, Trump told the crowd in Davenport that the U.S. needed to improve relations with Russia. “Wouldn’t it be nice if we actually got along with Russia?” he said. Trump bemoaned the U.S. fighting “politically correct wars,” but the only one he specified was the Iraq war. “We shouldn’t have been in Iraq in the first place,” Trump said. “I was totally against being in Iraq, right from the beginning.” That statement is incorrect. In a radio interview on Sept. 11, 2002, six months before the war started, Howard Stern asked Trump whether he supported an invasion of Iraq. “Yeah, I guess so,” Trump answered. “I wish the first time it was done correctly.” Trump also told the crowd that the United States was “one of the highest-taxed nation in the world.” But the CIA’s World Factbook ranks the United States 171st out of 219 countries in the percentage of gross domestic product spent on taxes.)

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
— Donald Trump’s Florida clubs are hiring — but the jobs will go to foreign workers – Meg Wagner
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/donald-trump-florida-clubs-hiring-foreign-workers-article-1.2729433
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump wants to bring jobs back to America — and some foreign workers to fill them. Trump is looking to hire 78 servers, housekeepers, and cooks for his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach and the nearby Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, according to Federal labor records. As he has for years, the Republican presidential nominee filed this month to import foreign workers for the jobs instead of hiring Americans, Buzzfeed News first reported Wednesday. Department of Labor records show Trump has sought H-2 visas for hundreds of foreigners to fill temporary positions at the two properties in recent years. The visas are issued through a legal program that allows employers to temporarily hire foreign workers when there are no Americans available to do the work. But hundreds of U.S. applicants either applied or were referred for the jobs, but only a handful were hired, the New York Times reported in February.  Since 2010, nearly 300 U.S. residents applied or were referred for jobs as waiters, waitresses, cooks and housekeepers there, but only 17 were hired, according to The Times. Over the same time period, 500 visas for foreign workers were filed at Mar-a-Lago. Laurel Baker, the executive director of the Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce, said the practice was common at seasonal seaside properties. “That’s something that appears to happen at all of the hotels or resorts,” Baker said. “The argument is that there are few locals available to do the work. This is more of a resort community.” Trump’s two properties are looking to hire 37 waiters and waitresses, who will be paid $11.13 an hour, and 26 cooks, who will earn $12.74 an hour. Additionally, Mar-a-Lago needs 15 $10.17-an-hour housekeepers.)

http://www.autoomobile.com/news/new-version-ford-mustang-costs-less-than-honda-civic-for-first-buyers/40032725/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So why is it cheaper for first time buyers to insure a Ford Mustang than it is the Honda Civic? The Civic offers up plenty of safety features and it isn’t as fast as the Mustang, so you would have thought it would have been the other way around. In fact there is a data pool which shows which age groups and cars are more prone to having accidents and making a claim. This means that the model of the vehicle actually goes towards how much insurance you are going to have to pay. So, first time buyers are able to buy a Ford Mustang and get it for cheaper insurance than they would the Honda Civic.)

http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/group-warns-of-more-property-tax-hikes-for-teacher-pensions/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: After evaluating data on 25,000 pension recipients, Taxpayers United of America warned Thursday that Chicagoans could be “taxed out of their homes to prop up” a Chicago Teachers Pension Fund with more than $10 billion in unfunded liabilities and nearly 33 percent more retirees than it had a decade ago. Last year, 28,114 beneficiaries together collected $1.3 billion in pensions from the teachers fund. The average retirement age was 61. The average annual pension was $51,454 compared with a median household income in Chicago of $47,831. But 974 of those teacher pensions topped $100,000. Another 14,420 teachers and administrators received retirement checks that exceeded $50,000. Former Chicago Schools Supt. Manford Byrd was identified as the pension kingpin, the study shows. He collects an annual pension of $190,634 — with an estimated lifetime payout of more than $2.5 million — even after paying just $126,561 into the fund during his long career with the Chicago Public Schools. The highest estimated lifetime payout of more than $6.1 million will go to Kevin Huber, former executive director of the Chicago Teachers Pension Fund. Huber gets an annual pension check of $91,541. During the course of his career, he made $235,332 in pension contributions, only 4 percent of his “lifetime payout,” the study shows. Yet another example is former Deputy Supt. Robert Saddler. He has collected $2.17 million in pensions since retiring in 1993 at the age of 59. His annual check is $169,225. That’s $60,890 more than the $108,335 in contributions Saddler made to the teachers pension fund during his career, the study shows. Jared Labell, executive director of Taxpayers United, noted that the $588 million property tax increase for police and fire pensions and school construction approved last fall is being phased in over four years.)

The Indiana governor joked that he was a “B-List Republican celebrity.” But as a social and fiscal conservative, he was dispatched to a part of Wisconsin that decisively rejected Trump during the April primary but which is key to Republican hopes of winning the state in the fall.)

— Challenges to sensible voter ID laws threaten confidence in the elections – Editorial  (DIERSEN: Those who are in America illegally use false identifications.  How many millions of them use those false identifications to vote for Democrats?)

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/jul/27/challenges-to-voter-id-laws-threaten-ballot-box-co/

(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Party conventions, first of the Republicans in Cleveland and this week of the Democrats in Philadelphia, first and foremost are about whose name goes on the top of the ballot. Before any votes are cast on Nov. 8, though, questions must be settled about identification rules determining who gets to cast a ballot. Voter identification laws, popularly called ID laws, have proliferated. Proponents say they prevent voter fraud. Opponents argue that the laws prevent minority voters from casting a ballot. Judges have been overturning them. In an age when hackers halfway around the world steal millions of identification records in the blink of an eye, the idea that no one should have to show who he says he is so he can vote, is silly.)

— Duckworth: Kirk running from record as Republican – Tina Sfondeles  (DIERSEN: How many will vote for Kirk because of the votes that he has cast against the Republican Party platform?  If I attended the Democrat convention as a member of the news media today like when I attended her rally with Michael J. Fox in Wheaton’s Arrowhead Golf Club in 2006, would she have her thugs throw me out again like she did then?  In retrospect, with benefit of hindsight, I should not have let her thugs throw me out.)
http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/duckworth-kirk-running-from-record-republican/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “I don’t think there’s a closer friend to Gov. Rauner than Mark Kirk,” Duckworth said. “In fact, much of Mark Kirk’s machine is running Rauner’s machine,” Duckworth said before criticizing Kirk for his voting record on trade deals and calling him someone willing to shift jobs overseas. Jabs at Rauner have become commonplace at the morning breakfasts, where union leaders and elected officials have collectively criticized the freshman governor. “I’m running to help Mark Kirk retire so he can go and do other things,” Duckworth said. “But really I’m running to make sure that families like me, families like yours, families like all of the ones across Illinois get a fair chance.” . . . Responding to Duckworth’s attacks, Kirk campaign spokesman Kevin Artl said: “Whether it was defending Rod Blagojevich or supporting Mike Madigan, Tammy Duckworth always puts her political ambitions ahead of what’s best for Illinois. While Rep. Duckworth votes with Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid nearly 94% of the time, Senator Mark Kirk remains a thoughtful, independent leader who always puts Illinois first.”)

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160727/news/160729088/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The day before congresswoman Tammy Duckworth is scheduled to deliver a major speech on the main stage at the Democratic National Convention, two women who filed a workplace retaliation suit against her have announced they’re refusing to accept a settlement offer that seemed a done deal just weeks ago. Now, a trial set to begin Aug. 15 in downstate Jonesboro could serve as an obstacle at an inopportune time for Duckworth as she enters the home stretch of her campaign to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk in a nationally-watched race. Plaintiffs Denise Goins and Christine Butler told the Daily Herald Wednesday that they were insulted by the Duckworth campaign’s June 24 response to the settlement, with deputy campaign manager Matt McGrath releasing a statement describing the suit as “a frivolous workplace case” that dragged on for more than eight years. “Within an hour of leaving the courthouse, her campaign decided to swing us through the mud again,” Butler said. “So we emailed our attorney to let him know we want to proceed to trial.” The women say they received no pressure from the Kirk campaign to reject the settlement offer.)
— Here’s what Bill Clinton said about Park Ridge Tuesday – Mike Riopell

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “I actually drove her home to Park Ridge, Illinois, to meet her family and see the town where she grew up, a perfect example of post-World War II middle-class America. Street after street of nice houses, great schools, good parks, a big public swimming pool,” he said. “And almost all white.”  He called her father a “crusty conservative” and her mother “more liberal” and said that “knowing her was one of the greatest gifts Hillary ever gave me.” “All extolling the virtues of rooting for the Bears and the Cubs,” Bill Clinton said. “And for the people from Illinois here, they even told me what waiting for next year meant. Could be next year, guys.” Clinton talked about Hillary’s Methodist minister Don Jones taking her to Chicago to see Martin Luther King Jr. speak, and much later in the speech noted that longtime Hillary Clinton friend Betsy Ebeling of Arlington Heights cast the Illinois delegation’s votes for the nominee.)
