Michigan Ave. Both politicians, she said, made clear that “dignity is not conditional” in the state. She added, “And yes—abolish ICE,” to loud applause. “Hands off our families. Hands off our cities. Hands off our state. Hands off our community.” Parker, a longtime LGBTQ+-rights advocate who’d been active in several Chicago organizations, was tapped as Equality Illinois’s interim CEO in June, then named to the position permanently in August. She is the organization’s first transgender Black leader. She emphasized throughout her speech the need to work as a collective in order to safeguard the rights of LGBTQ+ Illinoisans and other individuals living at the margins, even as right-wing elements continue to flex their political power: “This work is strictly by coalition [and] personal acts.” Parker added, “I promise my work continues. … Conspiracy is being used as a strategy. Chaos is being sold as inevitable.” She promised that her organization is up for the challenge, however. “That is the reality that Equality Illinois is built to face,” Parker said, warning that giving in to outrage will surely lead to disillusionment in the the long run. “Our job is not to chase every headline, or over-react ourselves into exhaustion. (FROM THE ARTICLE: As the midterm election year gets underway, voters are already drawing clear lines between the Democratic and Republican parties on the issues. A new Fox News survey, released Thursday, finds the Republican Party is seen as better able to handle border security (by 15 points), national security (+12), and immigration (+5). The Democratic Party is favored on transgender issues (by 22 points), healthcare (+21), vaccines (+16), helping the middle class (+14), and affordability (+14). And on three issues where Republicans have recently held the edge, now neither party has shown a clear preference: taxes (+1D), foreign policy (even), and the federal budget deficit (+2R). The survey asks voters what President Donald Trump’s top priorities should be, and the economy dominates. Nearly 4 in 10 cite either the economy in general (19%) or prices (17%). The view that the Democrats can better handle affordability gives them an early edge in the generic Congressional vote preference, where voters are asked who they will support in the U.S. House race in their district this November. While the question is largely hypothetical this far out, it gives us a baseline for the coming election, according to Republican pollster Daron Shaw. “Political science analyses demonstrate that aggregate responses to this question begin to more accurately predict the actual House vote by around mid-summer,” Shaw added. “But we ask it at this point simply to get a sense of how short-term forces might play out in the general election.” The survey shows if the election were today, 52% of voters would back the Democratic candidate in their House district and 46% the Republican. That’s a 6-point edge, which is right at the poll’s margin of sampling error. The current 52% Democratic support is the highest recorded for either party; the previous high was 50% for the Democrats in October 2017. Both parties are maintaining most of their coalitions. Democrats garner support from Black voters (+48 points), voters under age 30 (+28), and college graduates (+17), while Republicans receive backing from White evangelical Christians (+41), rural voters (+21), and White voters without a degree (+10). While the parties maintain high levels of support among most of their constituencies, Republicans are twice as likely as Democrats to defect across the aisle: 8% of self-identified Republicans currently say they would back the Democratic candidate, compared to 4% of self-identified Democrats who say they would go for the Republican today. Overall, three-quarters of voters say they are extremely (56%) or very (20%) motivated to vote in the November elections, and those voters are slightly more committed to the Democratic candidate than the Republican. That’s at least partly due to more Democrats (82%) than Republicans (76%) or independents (61%) saying they feel inclined to vote this year. Overall, motivation is on par with the 2022 midterm cycle, when 54% of voters said they were extremely motivated to vote. Twenty-eight percent of voters approve of the job Congress is doing, a 2-point increase since last January and the highest approval in nearly three years. However, disapproval is also up — from 67% last year to 71% today. In the generic ballot, those who disapprove of Congress are twice as likely to support the Democratic candidate (65%) as the Republican (33%). The small group of those who approve largely favor the Republican over the Democrat (79% to 21%). As Congress considers banning stock trading among members, the new survey finds 75% of voters favor the proposal. In about 376 Common Era, when The Roman Empire was divided into the Western and Eastern Empires, Goths (Germans) were trying to cross the river on the northern border of the Roman Empire. Huns were chasing and slaughtering the Goths. They wanted Roman protection. Valens, the Roman Emperor, didn’t want to let the Goths in, but he finally made a bargain with the leader of the Goths. The deal was in return for admission into the empire, the Goths would provide soldiers for the Roman army, which was fighting a war in the East of the Empire. The Romans would provide welfare to the Goths. After about 40 years, the Goths wanted to keep their own culture and stopped providing soldiers. The Romans cut off welfare. The Visigoths, one the Goth tribes, sacked Rome in 410 Common Era. This act effectively destroyed the Western Roman Empire. Quoting Milton Friedman in 1776: “A country can have open borders with no welfare. A country can have closed borders with welfare. If a country has open borders and welfare the country will disappear.” This history is a good lesson for our time. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Student petition signed by 1,200 calls ICE ‘fascist organization’ George Washington University Law School refused to disinvite U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from its career fair Friday after over 1,200 students and organizations signed a petition to have the federal agency removed. The petition called on GW Law and the Georgetown University Law Center to remove ICE and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from “all current components and future renditions” of the law schools’ joint event. “ICE is a fascist organization, tasked with carrying out ethnic cleansing, family separation, and extreme brutality and violence,” the petition states. It also states that “The government created ICE only 23 years ago to violently remove people from the United States, violating the human rights of immigrant communities and obfuscating the fact that the United States is a country stolen from Indigenous communities and built by enslaving Black people.” The students added that “Working for DHS or ICE is antithetical to what it means to be a lawyer serving the public interest.” Further, they stated that other law schools, such as New York University and American University’s Washington College of Law, have blocked “recruitment efforts” by DHS and ICE. “We remain adamant that regardless of immigration status, ICE’s actions grossly violate human rights, and we stand with immigrant communities everywhere in the fight against state violence,” the petition states. Dean Dayna Matthew met with the students who spearheaded the petition to discuss their concerns, and later sent an email stating the GW Law administrators decided not to rescind ICE’s invitation, The GW Hatchet reported. The dean cited free expression and university policy. The university is “committed to principles that protect all students’ right to ideological expression,” she stated. Matthew added that recruitment programs must remain open to all employers, even if some view their actions as objectionable. “In my view, providing PSRP access to an employer does not signal endorsement or support of that employer’s work or values,” Matthew stated. “My decision does support and endorse GW Law students’ right to express opposition to an employer consistent with the university’s freedom of expression policy,” she stated. After administrators declined to remove ICE, at least 20 employers pulled out of the career fair. However, the petition did have some impact. ICE’s Office of the Principal Legal Advisor withdrew from the event while the agency’s Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Center remained involved. FASORP first sued the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law in July 2024, alleging it refused to consider hiring white male faculty candidates with “stellar credentials” while hiring other “mediocre” candidates from diverse racial and gender backgrounds. Ellis did not explain her reasons for dismissing the case. Northwestern had argued that FASORP did not have grounds to sue because the members it says were passed over for faculty jobs lacked the necessary credentials and had not actually applied. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of three unnamed FASORP members who alleged they are ready and willing to apply for faculty posts at Northwestern’s law school but cannot compete because they are white men. Bisignano told the Washington Post that the new metrics will track the agency’s average speed to answer incoming calls, call abandonment rates and the amount of time taxpayers spend on the line with the agency. He told the Post that the agency’s old phone metrics didn’t help the IRS with its mission of solving taxpayers’ problems — and that the agency is investing in technology to better service its customers. “We’re constantly investing in technology. We constantly must reap the rewards of it,” Bisignano told the Post. The IRS is specifically sunsetting its Customer Service Representative Level of Service metric. The agency has used this metric for more than 20 years. But the National Taxpayer Advocate, an independent watchdog within the IRS, told Congress last year that this metric is “misleading” and “does not accurately reflect the experience of most taxpayers who call” the agency. National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins wrote in last year’s mid-year report to Congress that this Level of Service (LOS) metric only reflects calls coming into IRS accounts management phone lines, which make up only about 25% of the agency’s total call volume. Using the LOS metric, the IRS achieved an 88% level of phone service in fiscal 2024. But IRS employees actually answered less than a third of calls received during the 2024 filing season — both in terms of total calls, and calls to accounts management phone lines. The agency calculates its LOS metric by taking the percentage of phone calls answered by IRS employees and dividing it by the number of calls routed to IRS staff. The IRS relies on this metric, as well as historical data on call volumes, to set targets for how many calls it has the capacity to answer, and to set hiring and training goals in preparation for each tax filing season.)
