(FROM THE ARTICLE: There are lots of websites that compile political news, and I think it’s time I share one that I find quite interesting. It’s at www.gopillinois.com, and, as you can tell by its address, it has a Republican flavor. That is an understatement reinforced with the comments added by the compiler himself — DAVID DIERSEN of Wheaton. He introduced a recent UPI story about Republicans’ views on the drought and wildfires by saying: “Democrats blame everything bad, including bad weather, on Republicans, especially on Republicans who are conservative, White, male, older, non-poor and non-veteran.” And talking of a New York Times article about a photographer arrested while on assignment in the Bronx, Diersen wrote that since 2000, he has been thrown out of, barred from, or not advised of news conferences “by Democrats, Democrat plants, RINOs (Republicans in name only), their operatives, and their dupes.” Thus, if you don’t want to read some very pointed comments, you may not want to go to gopillinois.com. But you would be missing a treasure of links to the day’s news and opinion. Diersen, 63, is a retired federal employee who became the Illinois editor of a national GOP website in 2000, and since 2004 has put out his own Illinois compilation every day. There’s usually about 50 articles daily, he says. He’s generally up by 3 a.m. He says he spends at least 10 hours a day on this passion of his, with no pay, and has put out links to more than 117,000 articles. As his comments above hinted, party regulars don’t always greet his work with relish. He includes dissident voices within the GOP tent, and some whose credibility is questionable. But he puts it all out there. He’s a GOP precinct committeeman, and he believes in people having information. He also wants to help elect Republican candidates who “will defend and advance the party’s platform.” The site makes available plenty of Diersen history, too, including how his “liberal Democrat superiors,” in his view, forced him to take early retirement at 49 from the U.S. General Accounting Office, “because of his opposition to race and gender based preference and his participation in a class action lawsuit” on that subject. I did not start taking graduate accounting courses at DePaul until I was 27 in 1976. I did not take the CPA examination and pass it on my first attempt until I was 30. I did not earn a master’s degree in accounting at DePaul until I was 31. I did not take the Certified Internal Auditor examination and pass it on my first attempt until I was 32. I did not become a licensed CPA until I was 32. By then, it was too late for me because the accounting profession saw me as being too old to have a successful career in accounting and because the accounting profession was under tremendous pressure to hire, retain, and promote minorities, females, and veterans, and I was none of the aforesaid.

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Since the 2020 “racial reckoning,” there has been increased political momentum behind reparations for slavery. Debates about reparations have moved from the halls of academia to legislatures in California and a number of cities. Americans and their leaders are increasingly asking: Are reparations justified at all? And, if so, who should get how much? This report concerns itself with a different question: Who pays for reparations? Reparations are a form of compensation for historical injustice. But many Americans did not have any ancestors present in the country at the time that injustice was committed. It is hard to argue that Americans whose ancestors arrived after 1860 should be on the hook for the costs of reparations. What fraction of nonblack Americans have ancestors who arrived after the end of the Civil War? Using demographic modeling techniques, this report pegs the figure as high as 70%, including more than half the non-Hispanic white population. These Americans are the descendants of immigrants who came to the U.S. either in the first great wave of immigration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, or in the second great wave, begun in 1965 and still ongoing today. Many of these more recent arrivals are at the top of America’s economic distribution. Indeed, the recent-arrival share of top wealth earners is likely only to grow in coming years, given the prevalence of immigrants and children of immigrants at the head of top businesses. This means that the base of people and wealth that could plausibly be taxed for reparations is shrinking and will continue to shrink for the foreseeable future. — Growing Grid Strategy: Undergrounding Power Lines to Withstand Weather. DD: What exposes you to weather-caused power, internet, and phone outages? Overhead lines about 200 feet long to the west of my home at 915 Cove Court in Wheaton expose me to weather-caused power, internet, and phone outages big time. The line is in a utility easement on private property that is full of trees that have not been trimmed for decades. The Trees and vegetation are pushing the lines down and to the north. I have filed a “tree and vegetation request” with ComEd, but so far, ComEd has not responded. Further, according to Xfinity and AT&T, they cannot do any trimming until ComEd is done. It would be great if all the lines would be put underground.

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The power generation sector, including electric utilities and grid operators, recognizes the value of moving equipment underground to mitigate outages, lessen risks to assets, and reduce the chances of that equipment causing a wildfire. Electric utilities and power grid operators increasingly are looking at ways to diminish and avoid disruptions from extreme weather. The power sector also has experience with the financial impacts of wildfires, both with damage to assets and losses incurred when equipment is found liable for causing those events. Undergrounding lines, in addition to enhancing safety, also can improve the performance of transmission infrastructure, by mitigating hazards such as impacts from trees and other vegetation. A report from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Grid Deployment Office, along with Berkeley Lab in California, notes a “key advantage of underground transmission and distribution lines is substantially reduced vulnerability to disruption from extreme weather and wildfires [by preventing initial ignition as well as propagation], resulting in both reliability and resilience improvements.” Several electric utilities and other agencies have noted that undergrounding offers protection against lightning, animal incursions, high winds (including thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and derechos), and ice and snow. It also eliminates the chances of fallen power lines caused by auto accidents (Figure 1), or simply due to aging infrastructure.)
