NEWSWEEK
— THE WAGE GAP IS ONLY GETTING WORSE, ESPECIALLY FOR AMERICA’S SENIOR CITIZENS – CHRISTIANNA SILVA  (DIERSEN: If you are financially secure, what would your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes attribute that to?  My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would hint/imply/argue/shout that I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, that I have always been privileged, that I avoided the draft, that the federal government grossly overpaid me, that my wife and I gave up trying to have children, that we did not adopt, that we did not become foster parents, that my federal retirement benefits are much too generous, that I do not give lots of money to churches like they do, etc.)
http://www.newsweek.com/old-americans-suffer-one-worst-wage-gaps-world-688081
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Income inequality is rising and the wage gap is widening for American workers—and the problem is even worse for U.S. senior citizens, a new report shows. It’s so bad, in fact, that the income inequality numbers among the elderly in the U.S. resemble more a report out of a developing country than what would be expected of America. The gap between wealthy and poor seniors is one of the widest in any nation in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The only countries with wider gaps among seniors are Mexico and Chile, according to a study by the OECD and a CNN article. Past generations of retired Americans tended to see increased economic security, but with wages lower in comparison to inflation and fewer middle-class workers retiring with pensions, seniors now are not nearly as financially stable as in the past, according to CNN. Just 29 percent of Americans over 55 years old have a retirement savings account or a pension plan to lean on, a 2015 report from the Government Accountability Office showed. And it only gets worse as younger generations age, another OECD report shows.)

I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32. My Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that the undergraduate and graduate courses that I took a) were not job-related, b) did not help me carry out my job duties, c) were taken by me to get a job in the private sector, and d) were a distraction. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I spent my junior and senior years and the summer in between washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. https://realgopillinois.com/2017/10/17/return-4-45-million-bribe-rauner/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Remember how Republican officials were so outraged over Governor Bruce Rauner on his HB40 vote to begin taxpayers-funded abortions in Illinois? And did you hear the one about Rauner signing the Democrats bill making Illinois a sanctuary state? RAUNER GIVES $4.45 MILLION TO IL GOP AFTER ABORTION VOTE The Republican outrage, for public relations purposes, now appears to have stilled. Recently, Rauner dumped another $4.45 million into state Republican piggy banks and not a whimper or moan from our Grand Old Party about how Rauner broke his promise to voters. Illinois GOP chief TIM SCHNEIDER claims the money isn’t “hush” money. “Gov. Rauner has shown time and time again that he is committed to revitalizing the Republican Party in the state of Illinois. Thanks to Gov. Rauner’s unprecedented commitment, we are now closer than ever to retiring Speaker Mike Madigan once and for all,” Schneider said in a statement. Republicans have been taking money from left-wing donor Bruce Rauner since 2013 claiming “Because, Madigan.” Is Rauner any different from Democrat House Speaker Mike Madigan? Hasn’t he done everything Madigan has wanted? RAUNER IS A MADIGAN DREAM COME TRUE Rauner is a Madigan dream come true – he’s driven up billions in debt, squealed surrender on a major income tax increase, signed sanctuary state legislation, forced doctors to promote Planned Parenthood, given pro-abortion groups state grants, and signed legislation to force taxpayers to fund abortions. Every cash payment Rauner made to Illinois Republicans and conservative groups is hush money paid to keep their mouths shuts and they have “shut up” for four years counting. RAUNER GAVE $16 MILLION TO GOP OFFICIALS IN 2016 In 2016, Rauner donated $16 million to the Illinois Republican Party, accounting for 96% of its funds and that is how he has been able to control it. In 2016, as an elected Republican, Governor Rauner donated $3 million to left-wing Democrat KEN DUNKIN after a mailer accused him of being a convicted criminal and a deadbeat dad. Bruce Rauner and his Illinois Turnaround PAC donated $6 million to DAN PROFT and Liberty Principles PAC. Illinois Policy Institute is a private tax-exempt group and it does not reveal its donors. JOHN TILLMAN of Illinois Policy Institute has acknowledged receiving $625,000 from Bruce Rauner between 2009 and 2014.  Tillman has never disclosed the millions in donations his other non-profit groups receive from Rauner and his donors. REPUBLICANS HAVEN’T GIVEN RAUNER A DIME OF HIS MONEY BACK None of the Republicans mentioned above have given any of the money Rauner donated to them back since his vote on HB40 to begin taxpayer-funded abortion in Illinois and none of them are disclosing how much money they have received in total from the Governor since they helped him win election. Rauner, who was well known as a major donor to Planned Parenthood prior to his election, is the first U.S. Governor in history to force taxpayers to fund abortions. Real GOP Illinois doesn’t believe Republican officials who say they didn’t know Governor Rauner was an extremist on the abortion issue. We don’t believe them when they claim Rauner lied. RAUNER FUNDED BY HILLARY CLINTON’S BIG DONOR Rauner has plenty of money to spare. He received a $20 million contribution from Illinois’ richest man, billionaire KEN GRIFFIN, who bankrolls the campaigns of HILLARY CLINTON and RAHM EMANUEL, in May. How many Republicans will that buy? Columnist Terri Koyne said it best when she wrote on Illinois Review, “Rauner didn’t betray or deceive anyone [on his abortion views] – Rauner money grabbers did.” Until Republicans return Bruce Rauner’s donations, why should any voter believe them on anything?)

http://dailycaller.com/2017/10/16/total-division-within-our-society-tucker-sounds-off-on-immigration-video/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Fox News host Tucker Carlson sounded off on mass immigration Monday, saying that there is currently “total division within our society.” The Daily Caller co-founder said, “So we are at a moment and every survey shows it, of total division in our society. People have less in common with each than they ever have. And we’re asking basic questions like ‘What ties us all together? Why are we all in this together?’” “Do you not see any correlation between massive immigration since 1965 and where we are now? The country much less united, much less willing to [ask] basic questions like ‘is the Bill of Rights worth continuing?’ things like that. That’s not related to immigration? Of course it is.” Juan Williams also appeared on the segment, pushing back against some of Tucker’s claims, saying that the key was “assimilation.”  “Do you share American values? Do you believe in God-given rights and democracy and representation and law and order? That’s the key. And but it’s not about, at this point, a sort of tribal fight between native born Americans and immigrants,” Williams said.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/16/world/asia/china-internet-cyber-control.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the United States, some of the world’s most powerful technology companies face rising pressure to do more to fight false information and stop foreign infiltration. China, however, has watchdogs like Zhao Jinxu. From his small town on the windswept grasslands of the Inner Mongolia region of China, Mr. Zhao, 27, scours the internet for fake news, pornography and calls to violence. He is one of a battalion of online “supervisors” whom Weibo, one of China’s biggest social media platforms, announced last month it would hire to help enforce China’s stringent limits on online content. For years, the United States and others saw this sort of heavy-handed censorship as a sign of political vulnerability and a barrier to China’s economic development. But as countries in the West discuss potential internet restrictions and wring their hands over fake news, hacking and foreign meddling, some in China see a powerful affirmation of the country’s vision for the internet. “This kind of thing would not happen here,” Mr. Zhao said of the controversy over Russia’s influence in the American presidential election last year. Besides Communist Party loyalists, few would argue that China’s internet control serves as a model for democratic societies. China squelches online dissent and imprisons many of those who practice it. It blocks foreign news and information, including the website of The New York Times, and promotes homegrown technology companies while banning global services like Facebook and Twitter.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Despite images of retirees lounging on Florida beaches and playing on Arizona golf courses, many middle-aged and older Americans plan to stay right where they are when they hit their golden years. Forty-three percent of 45- to 65-year-olds anticipate remaining in their current residence throughout their retirement, according to an Ipsos/USA TODAY survey of 1,170 adults in that age bracket conducted Aug. 30 to Sept. 5. At the same time, home values that have recovered from the mid-2000s housing bust appear to be making a smaller but growing number of people to set their sights on other regions of the country, with 33% of people in that age range saying they’ll move. Another 24% aren’t sure what they’ll do. “The vast majority of older adults want to stay in their homes and communities,” says Rodney Harrell, director of livability thought leadership for AARP. “They want to be near their family and near their church” and friends.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: I recently completed a certification process in my field. This took several years and required clearing numerous hurdles. A few others in my office completed the same process. Typically, in our profession, this merits a raise. It takes a several months for a state board and other entities to process the materials and issue formal documentation. I and another woman in my office were told we would have to wait for that process to conclude before we got our raises. However, two men who finished around the same time received their raises earlier. I asked my boss directly about this and he confirmed that they had, but did not offer me any insight into what that meant for me. To me, this seems like sexism, whether the bosses realize it or not. For some reason it was more imperative to give these guys a raise immediately, before they had their documents in hand, and less important to expedite this process for the women.)

My federal health, dental, and vision health subsidy is $17,288, but I have to pay $5,763 to get that subsidy. My Social Security is $2,028.)
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-10-13/house-gop-s-tax-cut-hopes-ride-on-deciding-who-is-middle-class
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For some GOP members of Congress, a middle income household tops out at $100,000 a year. For others, a family making $400,000 still deserves a break. . .But even Republicans from the same state can’t agree on the definition. “The middle class is whatever you want it to be in many ways,” said Jim Renacci, an Ohio Republican who sits on the Ways and Means Committee. “I think the middle class, is anywhere from zero to $80,000 to $100,000. That’s really the target zone.” For Warren Davidson, who represents the Ohio district on the outskirts of Cincinnati where the biggest company is AK Steel Corp., middle class families could be those making up to $250,000 a year. “I think for our district, people probably don’t start feeling like they’re middle class until they start earning $40,000 a year, and they probably still feel like they’re middle class up until about a quarter million a year,” Davidson said in an interview. . .The Pew Research Center, for example, classifies the middle class as households making between two-thirds and double the median household income — or between $42,500 and $125,000 for a family of three in 2014. Other definitions consider whether people have a college degree or even their job type. . .A study by the nonpartisan Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center found that most middle-income families would enjoy after-tax gains under the GOP framework, but that taxes would go up for almost 30 percent of people making $50,000 to $150,000. The study said it used brackets outlined in the House GOP tax blueprint released in 2016 — a methodology that Brady and others criticized. . .Representative Peter King said families in his New Jersey district can make as much as $400,000 and still feel like part of the middle class. While he suggested that he’d be open to considering a compromise on state and local tax deductions, he rejected the idea of a cap that kicks in at an annual income of $200,000.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Defense Officer Personnel Management Act is one of the areas on which Spencer wants to focus. That act put into effect the military’s up or out system, which forces service members to promote to the next rank in a certain amount of time or be separated from the military. “If, in fact, we have excellent people in excellent positions, why shouldn’t we find a way to keep that gray matter, that institutional knowledge, that high performing person facing off against that issue and not be penalized that he or she is lost in his class on promotion?” Spencer said.  Letting sailors stay in a particular rank could let them keep doing what they actually love instead of forcing them into a leadership position. In some cases, pilots who want to only fly or sailors who like certain positions on a ship are forced to take on more responsibility as leaders instead of doing the task they joined the Navy to do.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Conservatives want to reverse abortion law Rauner signed – Monique Garcia
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-bruce-rauner-illinois-abortion-20171012-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservative lawmakers have filed legislation to ban tax money from being used to pay for abortions amid continued fallout between Gov. Bruce Rauner and Republicans angry at his decision to expand abortion access for women covered by Medicaid and state employee insurance. The proposal is unlikely to gain momentum given Democratic majorities in the legislature and Rauner’s signature this month on the abortion law. But effort to reverse it highlights the deep divide in the Republican Party, which has relied on the governor’s personal wealth to help revitalize their ranks. Under the bill, no taxpayer funds could be used to provide elective abortions. That would amount to a reversal of a key provision in the measure Rauner signed, which allows for taxpayer subsidized abortions for state employees and low-income women. Illinois already covered abortions in cases of rape, incest and when there is a threat to the health and life of the mother. “This controversial and culturally divisive act should not be one that taxpayers should be forced to fund,” said Republican state Sen. Dan McConchie of Hawthorn Woods. “Likewise, there is no good reason for taxpayers to be on the hook for someone else’s personal decision.” The measure would not impact the portion of the law signed by Rauner that would prevent a trigger making abortion illegal in Illinois should the U.S. Supreme Court overturn its landmark Roe v. Wade ruling. Meanwhile, conservatives say they are also considering a legal challenge to delay implementation of the abortion bill signed by Rauner. The governor has called on those upset by his decision to focus on uniting behind issues they can all support, such as his stalled efforts to put in place term limits and win regulatory changes he contends will spur business growth. “Reasonable people can reasonably disagree,” Rauner said last week when asked about the split in the Republican Party over abortion. “No group is defined by any one issue.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservative House Rep. Peter Breen plans to announce today a concerted pushback to the HB40 abortion bill just signed into law — including legal action and a new legislative proposal. “We’re going to be dropping a bill on the House and Senate on prohibiting taxpayer funding of abortion,” Breen, who is also the Republican House floor leader, told POLITICO. The proposed legislation is not an attempt to repeal the full HB40 abortion bill that Gov. Bruce Rauner signed into law, setting off a firestorm within his own party. This legislation, according to Breen, would focus on the taxpayer funding portion of the HB40 and not the trigger law. Breen described the legislation as modeled off the federal Hyde Amendment. “This bill really is a fresh start. That was always the real problem with HB40, was the taxpayer funding of abortion.” Whether the potential legislation has hope of surviving in a Democratic-dominated General Assembly is another question, however. Legal challenge — Breen, an attorney for the Thomas More Society, said there’s movement to contest HB40 in court, arguing that the effective date in the bill is in error. Instead of Jan. 1, it should be June 1st, Breen argues, since the bill wasn’t released until well past May 31. Democrats used a parliamentary move to delay sending HB40 — and other bills — to the governor for months. Breen said a lawsuit could work to put on trial that practice, which he argues goes against the spirit of the law. “That is worth filing a lawsuit. The Democrats have been playing games with this on multiple bills. Holding bills over until after May 31 is not in the constitution. That is something we are very actively pursuing,” Breen said. “At the very least what our argument would be, is it can’t be effective until June 1st.” That five months means the state wouldn’t pick up the cost of potentially thousands of publicly-funded abortions, he said. The Illinois Dept. of Public Health reports more than 39,000 abortions in Illinois in 2015.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Could Bannon back an anti-Rauner candidate? “Inside Bannon’s plans for a GOP civil war,” by Axios’ Mike Allen: ‘Bannon is also exploring gubernatorial and House races. As Bannon told Fox’s Sean Hannity this week: ‘Nobody’s safe. We’re coming after all of them.’ ‘Steve views this thing as a coalition,’ says a source familiar with his plans. ‘It’s a coalition of populists, constitutional conservatives and more libertarian types. But they all agree on Bannon’s core issues of trade and immigration.’ The GOP establishment is skeptical but scared … Bannon can sound delusional about his power to disrupt the party. But make no mistake: the combo of his fame with the base + access to Mercer money + true belief in America first policies = big trouble for establishment Republicans in 2018 and beyond. If Bannon were to field the slate he envisions, the Republican Party would have a civil war on its hands that makes 2010 look like a tea party.”)

http://www.thetelegraph.com/opinion/110661/editorial-diploma-change-provides-second-chance-for-many
(FROM THE ARTICLE: While it’s admirable that about 750,000 people each year work to improve themselves by taking the GED test — and the perseverance and learning required should not be dismissed — there are conflicting studies as to whether it really helps. Many employers say they see little difference between someone with a GED and someone who dropped out of school when it comes to hiring practices. That has disproportionately affected women and minorities both nationally and in Illinois. According to U.S. Census Bureau data, 13 percent of Illinoisans over age 25 do not have a high school diploma. For Hispanics in state, the number hovers around 38 percent. It is about 15 percent for African-Americans in Illinois.)

— Thrift Savings Plan success stories: Share them, or bury them? – Mike Causey
https://federalnewsradio.com/mike-causey-federal-report/2017/10/tsp-success-stories-share-them-or-bury-them/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Many readers can’t get information about fellow feds or retirees who are self-made millionaires. They like to know how it happened, how long it took and if there are any secret strategies. The answer is that of the thousands of civil servants who racked up million-dollar-plus accounts, most were longtime (28 years, on average) investors. They also invested heavily (sometimes exclusively) in the stock indexed C, S and I funds. During the Great Recession (2008) they did not get out of the stock market. They continued to buy — at what turned out to be bargain prices for shares — even though, for several years, the value of their accounts kept going down. While most appear interested in the subject, and hopeful of becoming self-made millionaires, three readers have objected. All for the same reason: If the general public hears about millionaire feds, even if they are totally self-made, it will go hard for all federal workers in general. They have a point. Up to a point. But it can also show that even modestly paid feds can accumulate a retirement nest egg by saving and investing wisely. And over a long period of time.)

Three Democrats requested the study. People will take from it according to their political aims. But it’s worth reading just to get an unbiased view of the facts, nearly a year since a contentious election. A strong, statutory framework exists for transitions. It was strengthened by the Presidential Transitions Improvement act of 2015.  Against this backdrop, GAO looked carefully at the most recent transition.)

FAMILY PAC
— A Statement From Paul Caprio About Rauner’s Signing of HB 40
http://mailchi.mp/f553f1874776/statement-from-paul-caprio?e=8dc9fff257
(FROM THE ARTICLE:  About three years ago to this day, I was asked by a supporter to meet with Bruce Rauner in the final stages of his campaign for Illinois governor. I agreed to the meeting, which took place at the Union League Club in Chicago. Family-Pac had not supported Rauner in the Primary, and Rauner had refused to clarify his positions on a host of issues important to all of us. He continued to say that he had no “social agenda.” My friend David Smith of the Illinois Family Institute (IFI) asked that I try to persuade Rauner to complete the IFI candidate questionnaire so that Christian voters across Illinois would be informed of his positions. At our meeting, Rauner said he would not fill out the questionnaire because his “consultants” told him he “had to get every question right to get the “endorsement.” I explained that IFI was a 501(c) (3) organization that did not “endorse” candidates and that no one was looking for “perfection” but only his honest attempt to state his views. Rauner said that he was not filling out any questionnaires (the position also stated by his campaign lieutenants) and that he wanted to keep Personal-Pac “neutralized.” I told him that Personal-Pac and Terry Cosgrove would be running TV spots against him. He seemed surprised. (Shortly thereafter, Personal-Pac TV ads against Rauner began.) This meeting exemplifies the series of lies by Bruce Rauner to Illinois pro-family voters and leaders. First, Rauner said to me that he was not completing any candidate questionnaires—yet this May, after Rauner stated his intention to veto HB 40 (taxpayer-funded abortion), Personal-Pac released a copy of Rauner’s “perfect” questionnaires in which he had pledged to sign taxpayer-funded abortion. In May, after promising Cardinal Cupich that he would veto HB 40, Rauner signed this dastardly bill, which will result in the deaths more than 12,000 innocent victims a year according to reliable estimates. In 50 years, I have never seen a politician as consistently dishonest on family issues as Bruce Rauner. Rauner has become a “cancer” on the Republican Party leadership, who should disassociate from him and declare the 2018 March Primary “open,” but they won’t…because they don’t have the courage to stand up for their “professed” beliefs and are indentured to his money. But Family-Pac will….with your help. On October 9, we convened a meeting of 20 pro-family/pro-life organizations to recruit a strong pro-family candidate to seek the GOP nomination against Rauner and his multi-million dollar checkbook. We are interviewing a number of candidates now and also pledged to support an independent candidate, like Joe Walsh, if necessary. We are leading the attack against Rauner in the media everyday, but we need your help. if Family-Pac is going to provide essential financial help to the candidate we recruit to get a strong campaign off the ground. Please help now as never before. We must fight to repeal HB 40 and provide courageous moral leadership to some of the Rauner-fearing elected officials. Please go to our website http://www.family-pac.com/support-us/ to contribute $35, $50, $100, $250, $500, $1000, or $2500 or send your donation in today to stand up for innocent life, taxpayers, and integrity in government as never before.)

— RAUNER COULD FACE PRIMARY CHALLENGE FOR GOP NOMINATION
http://www.x95radio.com/2017/10/10/rauner-could-face-primary-challenge-for-gop-nomination/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, despite buckets of campaign cash, may be in for a primary fight in his 2018 re-election battle for governor. Suburban Republican lawmaker Jeanne Ives (Wheaton) is considering getting in the race, citing her frustration with the governor’s signing of HB40, a law that will increase access to abortion for state Medicaid recipients and would continue to make abortion legal in Illinois should the U.S. Supreme Court choose to overturn it. Rauner is facing a revolt from the grassroots of his party, with several Republican lawmakers saying they can’t support him for re-election and are actively looking for an alternative. Former ally John Tillman, head of the libertarian think tank The Illinois Policy Institute, referred to him as “Benedict Rauner” for allegedly “going back on his word” and signing HB40. Ives would appear to be at a significant financial disadvantage, but could level the playing field if she garners the support of political operatives like Dan Proft and uber-funder Dick Uihlein.)
