— DIERSEN HEADLINE: The Democrat news media gives Rauner advice on how to defeat Ives.
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180130/BLOGS02/180139983/jeanne-ives-is-vulnerable-if-gov-rauner-dares-to-attack
(FROM THE ARTICLE: You want to avoid that fate, governor? Then quit whining about Mike Madigan and start acting like you would against any Democratic foe: Attack. Engage. Contrast your views and record with hers. There’s plenty of material to use, if Rauner chooses to do so. For instance, Ives told Crain’s editorial board last week she’d balance the state budget in large part by shifting the tax load to the people of Chicago and suburban Cook County. She’d do so by slashing aid to Chicago Public Schools under the state’s new formula, and by working to end the Obamacare expansion, which shifted to the federal government and, to a lesser degree, the state hundreds of millions of dollars a year in costs for caring for indigent patients at Cook County’s network of hospitals and clinics. Yes, that might mean a local tax hike, she conceded. Are you listening, Governor? Your opponent seems to favor a tax hike in Cook County, which, despite its reputation of being a Democratic stronghold, cast more than a third of the vote statewide in the 2014 GOP primary—a cool 428,345. When pressed if dropping Obamacare might also result in a reduction of health care to people without the funds to pay for it, Ives notes they run a nice voluntary dental clinic in DuPage County. Now, there’s a campaign plank that will sell with moderate voters, not only in Cook County but also in the five suburban collar counties, which provided another quarter of the statewide vote in the 2014 Republican primary. It has a real ring, doesn’t it? “Let ’em go to the free clinic.” Of course, most voters don’t know that Ives said that, because Rauner hasn’t told them. Over at the Tribune, Ives had another budget solution. If employee groups won’t cave with financial concessions, “lay them off,” she said. Right! Start with the state troopers and prison guards, and work your way down to university professors and doctors in the health department. The latter can use their free time to volunteer at the community clinic! Of course, Ives could spark another crisis like the one that left Illinois without a budget for two years. That certainly was a big success. Ives, at the Trib, also bragged about being one of a handful of lawmakers to vote against extending the state’s Edge payroll incentive program to woo jobs. I understand her zeal that lower taxes for everybody is the libertarian gold standard. But in a country in which almost every state offers something like Edge, unilateral disarmament would leave Illinois even worse off. Guv, you might consider communicating Ives’ stance on Edge to people who work for Amazon in Will County, Sears in Hoffman Estates and Ford at the Torrence Avenue plant, all of which received Edge. And you might cc: everyone who hopes to land a job at Amazon’s possible HQ2 here. There’s other material out there, material that could be effective not only in a general election against a Democrat, but in a primary against Ives. Sure, doing so would provoke some conservative voters who might not come home in November. But I suspect most of them already are mad over Rauner’s actions on abortion and so-called sanctuary cities. The question this fall: Would they rather have a liberal—or very liberal—Democrat in office? “I think Rauner’s folks are making a mistake. They need to take her straight on,” says one top party insider, who asks not to be named. In this predominantly blue state, that insider adds, the message ought to be: “A vote for Jeanne Ives is a vote for (Illinois House Speaker) Mike Madigan to draw the new legislative map that will be in place until 2031.” That source is right. You want to keep your job, Governor? It’s time to start acting like you mean it.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Two Chicago aldermen want to give condo boards in the city the power to ignore a piece of Illinois condo law that some homeowners consider a threat to their privacy. The state rule, which went into effect Jan. 1, requires a condo association to provide a list of contact information—including mailing address, phone number and email address—on all unit owners to any owner who requests it. The rule is intended to “provide transparency,” said state Rep. Andre Thapedi, the chief sponsor of HB 189. His district runs from Park Manor on the city’s South Side west to suburban Hickory Hills.)

— Bill to evade President Trump’s tax overhaul gets watered down – LIAM DILLON
https://www.latimes.com/politics/essential/la-pol-ca-essential-politics-updates-legislation-to-help-californians-evade-1517344326-htmlstory.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A bid to help Californians dodge the effects of President Trump’s tax plan has gotten a little less generous. State Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) has changed his bill allowing those who donate to a new state-run nonprofit to receive relief on both their state and federal taxes. In the new version of the bill, those who give to the nonprofit will reduce their state income taxes by 85% of the donation plus receive a federal charitable deduction. Previously, De León was aiming to provide a dollar-for-dollar reduction in state taxes for those who donated. But tax law experts working on the bill with De León worried that amount could cause the federal Internal Revenue Service to crack down on the plan, and advised that a lower percentage was more legally defensible. “The proposed 85% tax credit … will give Californians the opportunity to fund programs they care deeply about while at the same time shielding them from some of the most egregious elements of Trump’s tax reform plan,” De León said in a statement. De León, who also is running for U.S. Senate, introduced his bill after Trump and the GOP-led Congress passed a federal tax overhaul that capped state and local tax deductions at $10,000, an amount that disproportionately affects high-tax states like California. De León’s measure aims to allow Californians who previously used the state and local tax deduction — primarily single- and joint-filers reporting annual incomes of $100,000 or more — to instead take advantage of the charitable deduction.)

— The candidate’s opponent(s) has more money
— You believe the candidate’s opponent(s) has a better chance of winning in the general election
— You believe that the candidate has little or no chance of winning in the general election
— The candidate rejects planks in the Republican Party platform and/or the Illinois Republican Party platform
— The candidate has said and/or done things that hint/imply/argue/shout that the candidate does not want your support
— Those who the candidate support and/or those who support the candidate have said and/or done things that hint/imply/argue/shout that the candidate does not want your support

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that any Republican candidate who I might support in contested Republican primary election is “too conservative” to win in the general election, and therefore, no Republican candidate should seek or accept my support in a contested Republican primary election.

BREITBART
— Conservative Jeanne Ives Gets Massive Fundraising Boost in Illinois Governor’s Race – JOEL B. POLLAK
http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/01/30/conservative-jeanne-ives-gets-massive-fundraising-boost-illinois-governors-race/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservative State Representative Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) received a massive donation on Monday from Lake Forest businessman Richard Uihlein, who formerly backed incumbent Republican Governor Bruce Rauner. Crain’s Chicago Business reports that Uihlein wrote Ives’s insurgent campaign a $500,000 check, giving it a boost even as Rauner attempts to look past the March 20 primary and towards likely Democratic nominee J.B. Pritzker. Uihlen’s defection from Rauner may also be a sign of things to come among conservative voters, who may be attracted to a strong alternative. Rauner won in 2014 on an agenda of reform, but has failed to deliver. He vetoed a tax increase by was overridden by the state’s Democrat-dominated legislature. Worse, from a conservative point of view, he broke a key pledge and signed a law expanding state funding of abortions. He also signed legislation making Illinois a “sanctuary state.” Ives is a solid conservative who graduated from West Point and served overseas in the U.S. Army. Her only political weakness is her lack of name recognition outside of her district in the western suburbs of Chicago. She trails Rauner by a wide margin in early polls. However, as Crain’s notes, having a sizable campaign war chest will help her advertise. Recently, Ives told Breitbart News: “Any time conservative voters know that there’s an opponent to Bruce Rauner, they’re motivated to come to the polls and work for me and vote for me. And that’s because my record is one of conservatism, and they are very upset at sanctuary policies, taxpayer funding of abortion, junk science on transgender issues, [and] bailing out Chicago schools with our school money.” Pritzker, like Rauner, is a billionaire with little prior formal political experience, although he has close ties to the state’s Democratic Party establishment.)

DAILY HERALD
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD WITH COLOR PHOTOS OF IVES AND RAUNER: How the suburbs could decide the Rauner, Ives primary – Marni Pyke (DIERSEN: According to this article, DuPage County leaders who support Rauner over Ives said “I suspect there are some single-issue Republicans that will (endorse Ives) as well, but mainstream Republicans are behind Rauner all the way” and “the talk on the street is he’ll beat Jeanne and Jeanne will pick up that hard-core base.” Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can/will defend/advance their platform. In Illinois, if you state that you are Republican, but you fail/refuse to defend/advance the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform, you are not a Republican, you are a RINO, a Democrat plant, a Libertarian plant, or a Green plant. You should not seek or hold any kind of government or political office in Illinois as a Republican. Those who can/will defend/advance the IRP platform endorse Ives. Those who state that they are Republican, but fail/refuse to defend/advance the IRP platform endorse Rauner. I served on the 2008 IRP Platform and Resolutions Committee. The IRP’s 2012 and 2016 platforms are little changed from IRP’s 2008 platform. Needless-to-say, I want to serve on IRP’s 2020 Platform and Resolutions Committee. If Rauner wins the primary election, to win the general election, he will have to stress the planks in the IRP platform that he rejects, that is, he will have to destroy the IRP. Most commonly, RINOs, Democrat plants, Libertarian plants, and Green plants reject the traditional family, right to life, and immigration planks. Most commonly, they promote dependency on government, dependency on charity, LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, abolition of the First and Second Amendments, and even worse things. Most commonly, they are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-draft avoiders, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180130/how-the-suburbs-could-decide-the-rauner-ives-primary
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Jeanne Ives’ candidacy continues to roil Republicans as many in the GOP establishment embrace Gov. Bruce Rauner as their best hope in the general election, while conservatives dig in for the challenger in the March 20 primary. And if recent events are any indication, much of the battle will be fought in the suburbs. At a Rauner pep rally with DuPage County GOP leaders a week ago, some Republicans admitted to angst over how Ives, a social conservative from Wheaton, is splitting the party, although Rauner didn’t even mention her name. Instead, he said the real threat will come from Democrats in the November general election. “We can’t have Mike Madigan and J.B. Pritzker in total control,” Rauner said, referring to Illinois’ powerful House speaker and the Hyatt hotel heir who is one of six Democratic contenders for governor. Meanwhile, an undeterred Ives took the podium at Chicago’s Union League Club last week with her own posse of seven elected officials who back her candidacy. “It is unprecedented to have legislators in open revolt against the governor of their own party,” Ives said. The endorsement throwdown ramped up at Rauner’s event in Naperville, where DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin told party members in a private meeting “we’ve got to stick together” to re-elect the governor. “Nobody likes a primary,” Cronin said later. “We can ill afford to fight among ourselves.” Backing Rauner were 14 local mayors, countywide elected officials and four state senators and representatives. But not everyone’s on that bandwagon. While Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico hosted Rauner last week, two days later Naperville Township Assessor Warren Dixon was among those backing Ives. Likewise, state lawmakers Patti Bellock and (Peter) Breen represent neighboring districts in eastern DuPage County. She came out for Rauner and he for Ives. Said Chirico: “I suspect there are some single-issue Republicans that will (endorse Ives) as well, but mainstream Republicans are behind Rauner all the way. In my view, Gov. Rauner has the only realistic chance of winning as a Republican in the general election.” Breen, a Lombard state representative, said “our country was founded on a tradition of vigorous public debate. For these reasons, I’d respectfully contend that the greater good is best served by an open, robust contest for the Republican nomination for governor.” Ives has made some headway in Cook County with an endorsement by the Republicans of Wheeling Township organization. Rather than seeing Ives as a quixotic choice, Wheeling Township Committeeman Ruth O’Connell thinks Rauner “hasn’t accomplished anything” and Ives “has the better chance.” Ives’ opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage won’t sit well with the majority of Republicans in Cook and DuPage counties who are “strong fiscal conservatives and social moderates,” countered Aaron Del Mar, Cook County Republican Central Committee deputy chairman. Ives’ opposition to sanctuary cities also means Hispanic Republicans are with the incumbent, Northfield banker and Republican Joseph Gomez predicted. On the fiscal side, “there’s no doubt the Republican business community will be with Rauner,” Gomez said. The Cook County Central Committee votes on endorsements Feb. 5. “We’re the battleground,” Del Mar said. “I think (Ives will) do well in conservative areas and downstate. It will be uphill in Cook and DuPage.” Cook County lawmaker Tom Morrison of Palatine disagrees. “Consider the numbers of Republican congressmen and General Assembly members who are staying on the fence or actively speaking up for Rep. Ives,” he said. “By his own policy decisions, Bruce Rauner is a man without the base of support he needs to win in a general election.” Just-retired Addison Township Republican Chairman Pat Durante was shaken by Rauner’s signing a bill allowing for Medicaid to be used for abortions. But the veteran political observer said “the talk on the street is he’ll beat Jeanne and Jeanne will pick up that hard-core base.” Could Ives beat the odds? “Sure,” Durante said, “but she’ll need more money and the base needs to work for her.”)

— When It Comes to Elections, There Are More Options Than Endorsing a Candidate – Page May and B. Loewe (DIERSEN: Are/were you an incumbent? I am no longer a TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member, GAO employee, etc. I should write a book about those who succeeded in getting rid of me, the strategies and tactics that they used, who came to my defense, and who failed/refused to come to my defense.)
http://www.truth-out.org/opinion/item/43348-when-it-comes-to-elections-there-are-more-options-than-endorsing-a-candidate

(FROM THE ARTICLE: To beat these incumbents took a variety of tactics, and the victories are in no way ours alone to claim. In both races, multiple local efforts formed sometimes intersecting and sometimes divergent forces aimed at taking down the incumbents. In Chicago, some groups focused on traditional phone and door-knocking outreach tactics on behalf of Alvarez’s challenger Kim Foxx. In Arizona, an organization received funding to send mailers targeting Republican voters to convince them that challenger Paul Penzone would do a better job at keeping them safer than his opponent. In contrast, each of us put our energies into grassroots campaigns that did not endorse anyone in the race. Instead, the #ByeAnita and #BaztaArpaio campaigns framed the races as watermark moments and motivated voters to set an example by taking down the incumbents for their racist behaviors. In these times, voters — especially voters of color — are cynical. (More eligible voters sat out the 2016 election, despite the stakes, than cast a ballot.) We would attribute this low turnout not only to extensive voter suppression efforts by the GOP, but also to decades of promises from Democrats who either fail to fulfill those promises, or campaign with the assumption that voters of color are a captive base. It’s created a broad disenchantment that any challenger has a hard time overcoming. Some candidates address this by continuing to count out or ignore segments of voters who are seen as notoriously hard to mobilize. Instead, they focus their efforts to tilt the turnout needle in their direction, aiming their messaging strictly at “high efficacy” or “reliable” voters. (Ironically, these “reliable” constituents are narrowly defined as people who have a history of turning out to vote in presidential and midterm elections. It isn’t defined as the Black women who reliably vote for Democrats at a much higher margin than any other demographic.) Others set up town halls and forums to get to know the candidates, particularly when they are lesser known than the incumbents.)

— Rauner challenger Ives goes on attack during only forum of Republican governor race – Rick Pearson and Kim Geiger
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-bruce-rauner-jeanne-ives-debate-20180129-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ives, who was on the attack for nearly the entire time, offered a blunt assessment of Rauner’s anti-Madigan strategy. “He’s never going to have a chance,” Ives said. “Republicans across the state don’t trust him. He’s betrayed everything that we stand for.” Rauner repeatedly sought to paint a larger picture for Illinois during a second term and to look past Ives, a three-term Republican state lawmaker from Wheaton. He vowed a “revolution” using term limits and opposition to Madigan would take “power back from the corrupt insiders and (give) it back to the people of Illinois.” Ives, who’s not well known statewide and lacks the personal wealth of Rauner, used the forum to repeatedly attack Rauner’s credibility among GOP conservatives. She said fellow Republican lawmakers can attest to a lack of trustworthiness with the governor. Ives contended Rauner’s signature on legislation that expanded taxpayer-subsidized abortions for women covered by Medicaid and state employee health insurance demonstrated that all the governor accomplished in his first term was a “progressive social agenda.” “He told us he would veto the bill,” she said. He lied to a cardinal,” she said, a reference to Cardinal Blase Cupich. Rauner would not say what he told Cupich about the abortion legislation, but called Ives’ allegations “outrageous.” “There are a lot of politics swirling around the bill,” said Rauner, who repeatedly added that “the simple fact is I support a woman’s right to decide.” The governor said his choice to sign the bill was either to “follow what I believe or do politics.” But Ives said the March 20 primary contest was a referendum on “character and courage” and that by signing the bill, Rauner was following the “agenda” of his wife, Democrat Diana Rauner. “This is more false vicious attacks,” Rauner replied. “Madigan loves everything that you’re saying, everything that you’re doing.” Ives interjected frequently while Rauner answered questions, seeking to make the most of their only scheduled forum. Rauner repeatedly asked Ives to allow him to finish and at one point used one of his favorite condemnations, “such baloney,” to describe one of her attacks. Ives contended Rauner was “responsible” for the state income tax increase that was enacted over his veto and that he now was making “unrealistic promises” by calling for it to be phased out. Rauner said he “sure as heck did” work to block Republicans from ultimately supporting the veto override and said he was “devastated” when it and a state budget were enacted. The governor maintained that he expected federal court victories that would grant him the power to weaken the influence of unions, which are traditionally aligned with Democrats. “I’m not going to wait for Speaker Madigan to do it with me. I’m going to do it unilaterally,” Rauner said of his union-weakening efforts. “You watch us boom when we get the rest of the changes made in the court system, even if Madigan is still in power.” Rauner said if the courts rule against him, “We keep working, we keep changing, we keep fighting.” Ives, who has backed Rauner’s agenda taking on unions in the past, said her answer to dealing with public employee unions has been to fire workers who don’t accept conditions. “If you can’t impose your final best offer because the courts have blocked it, you start laying off people,” Ives said.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/28/business/metoo-finance-lawsuits-harassment.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Accusations of sexual harassment have felled dozens of executives, but in one quiet corner of the financial world, the #MeToo movement looks like a golden opportunity. Companies that offer money to plaintiffs in anticipation of future legal settlements are racing to capitalize on sexual harassment lawsuits. That is setting off alarms in some quarters because the industry, like payday lenders, has a history of providing cash at exorbitant interest rates to customers who need the money for living and sometimes medical expenses. The largely unregulated companies have operated with less public scrutiny than the rest of the litigation finance industry, which provides money to law firms to fund commercial lawsuits.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Rauner, Ives to spar live online at 11 a.m. (DIERSEN: One would expect that far more Republican incumbents, rather than their Republican primary challengers, wanted to get rid of TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois. If I was still the TAPROOT chairman, the organization would be hosting debates for a) Rauner v. Ives, b) Sanguinetti v. Morthland, c) Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee candidates, and d) many other races. Those who wanted to get rid of TAPROOT were furious when I asked candidates if they would defend and advance all the planks in the IRP platform if they were elected. From what I see, protecting Republican incumbents is a top priority for the IRP, DuPage County Republican Central Committee, Milton Township Republican Central Committee, etc. Of course, there are exceptions. The IRP succeeded in getting Peter Fitzgerald to not seek a second term. That brought us Jack Ryan, Alan Keyes, and Obama.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-jeanne-ives-editorial-board-20180129-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and primary challenger state Rep. Jeanne Ives will appear before the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board at 11 a.m. Monday for an endorsement session that will be streamed online at chicagotribune.com. It’s the first time since Ives announced her campaign that voters will have a chance to see the two candidates together. And it might be the last. No televised debates between the two are scheduled, and Rauner has been careful not to talk about Ives much, once suggesting she is a “fringe” candidate. Rauner’s position is a common one for well-heeled incumbents: If your opponent isn’t well-known and doesn’t have a lot of money to remedy that, don’t raise his or her profile. (A Republican-aligned pollster this month suggested the governor has a big early lead.) Ives, though, has criticized Rauner at every turn. She hit him when he said “I am not in charge” late last year. A West Point graduate, Ives has slammed Rauner over veterans’ deaths in Quincy. And as recently as last week, she continued to criticize the governor’s signature of a law to expand the availability of taxpayer-funded abortions. That last issue, of course, is the one that sparked Ives’ candidacy in the first place. Ives is a third-term lawmaker from Wheaton, and Rauner is seeking a second term as governor. The Tribune Editorial Board, which operates separately from the newsroom, will use the session to help decide on its endorsement.)

NPR ILLINOIS
— Lawmakers Consider More Property Tax Breaks For Seniors – SAM DUNKLAU (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those in my precinct, in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who want my wife and I to pay more real estate tax. They stress that my wife and I gave up trying to have children, that we did not adopt, and that we did not become foster parents. They stress that I avoided the draft, that I am not a member of a church, that I do not attend church services, and that I do not give money to a church. They hint/imply/argue/shout that the federal government grossly overpaid me and that my federal pension and my federal health, dental, and vision insurance subsidies are much too generous. They side with the developer of our subdivision, the City of Wheaton, Milton Township, and DuPage County that argue that our home and the subdivision it was built in never had any defects.)
http://nprillinois.org/post/lawmakers-consider-more-property-tax-breaks-seniors#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democratic state Senator Laura Murphy of Des Plaines said the cost of owning a home in her suburban district is getting too pricey for older people. “It’s a very common concern of seniors anxious about how they’re gonna remain in their homes,” she said. She wants more seniors to be able to claim a homestead exemption on their property taxes — raising the maximum annual income from $65,000 to $75,000. Another proposal would allow seniors in downstate communities to cut their tax by $7,000, up from the current $5,000. But Carol Portman, president of the Taxpayers’ Federation of Illinois, calls that problematic. “By reducing the taxes of those folks a little bit, then you’re raising it for the next door neighbors and the people across the street. Where you draw the line of who gets the benefit and who has to pay the taxes for them, it gets really tough to draw.” Property taxes have become a top political issue in the 2018 elections, from the race for governor on down the ballot.)

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/republican-donors-happy-with-trumps-policy-successes-but-worry-his-demeanor-will-cost-gop-in-the-midterms/article/2647353
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Roskam holds a suburban Chicago district, the sort where educated white women are prevalent. Despite the booming economy, they don’t like Trump. Additionally, the Republican tax bill has been a hard sell in upscale suburban strongholds in blue states that usually vote for Republicans but believe the new law could raise their taxes. “Educated suburban white women have decided that they’re not interested,” DeBlasio said. “People tend to react in a sense they want to protect themselves…Trump doesn’t give people a sense of security, particularly that demographic.”)

DAILY BEAST
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: A Republican hating Democrat says “It’s Still 1965 in Donald Trump’s Mind on Immigration Until Trump, politicians who staked their careers on xenophobia and nativism were losers. Maybe even he is beginning to realize this.” Beyond overwhelmingly, immigrants vote for Democrats. Since 1965, ever-increasingly, Democrats make it clear that they want to use immigrants to get rid of Republicans once and for all.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/its-still-1965-in-donald-trumps-mind-on-immigration

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There are two Americas when it comes to attitudes toward immigration, and the numbers tell the story. In 1960, 5.4 percent were foreign born; in 1970, it was 4.7 percent. Today it’s 13.5 percent. And the newcomers are not spread evenly across the country. Trump lost 16 of the 20 states with the most immigrants, with California the most obvious, and he won 26 of the 30 states with the least number of immigrants. Thanks to incendiary comments by politicians with a vested interest in stoking fears, people in states with the fewest immigrants are the most frightened of what they believe is an “invasion.” Surveys find that people think there are far more immigrants than there actually are, mirroring their belief that government devotes a vast amount of money to foreign aid, when it’s less than 1 percent of the federal budget. The Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965, which Ted Kennedy shepherded through the Senate, opened the door to the modern wave of immigrants from around the world. Before that, they came mainly from Northern Europe. Family unification, which Trump derides as “chain migration,” was put in place as a way to insure the flow of largely white and European immigrants would continue. Now that immigrants from other places are the beneficiaries, Trump wants to end it.)

(FROM THE LETTER: U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois recent labeled President Donald Trump a draft dodger and implied that not serving in the military renders one incapable of insight on budgetary matters related to the Defense Department. Yes, Trump was deferred from military service when we had a draft, as were erstwhile President Bill Clinton and Vice President Dick Cheney. Our immediate past president, also from the Land of Lincoln, chose not to serve. Does Duckworth believe then that we should amend the Constitution so that only presidents who have worn the uniform can bear the commander-in-chief title? Animus directed at the orange-maned man in the Oval Office has reached manic proportions when senators can make ad hominem statements in lieu of addressing the issue of the moment. Duckworth may curry favor with other sufferers of Trump Distemper with her intemperate and illogical insults, but she leaves this disabled military veteran who did not vote for Trump displeased.)

http://nprillinois.org/post/state-federal-workforce-low#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The past year has been a tough one for the federal workforce. There was a hiring freeze at many agencies. For three days earlier this month, there was a government shutdown, leaving many workers to wonder when their next paycheck would arrive. Now, as President Trump prepares his first State of the Union address, one issue he is expected to take up, if not there then in his soon-to-follow proposed budget for fiscal year 2019, is reorganizing the federal bureaucracy. It’s a prospect that many in the federal workforce are dreading. Already, the state of the federal workforce is described as low. Morale “is the lowest that I have ever seen it in my just shy of 40 years” being a federal employee and working with federal employees, said J.David Cox Sr., president of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents some 700,000 federal workers. Agencies, he says, are already short-staffed, with vacancies unfilled, and Cox worries pay will be frozen. “We are concerned,” Cox says, “because reorganization means let’s figure out a way to cut or do more with less and do away with services that the American people want.”)

http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2018/01/male_journalists_love_genderbased_pay_cut.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: What is it that makes liberal journalists happy? Sexually harassing their coworkers? Creating fake news stories about Donald Trump? Pushing the liberal agenda day after day? Well, it turns out that what makes male journalists the happiest is a pay cut, at least at the BBC. The BBC said on Friday that it was reducing the salaries of several of its most prominent male journalists following Carrie Gracie’s decision this month to leave her position as the British broadcaster’s China editor to protest unequal pay between men and women at the organization. Among those receiving pay cuts are the presenters Jeremy Vine, Huw Edwards and John Humphrys. Mr. Vine described his decision to take a wage cut as a “no-brainer.”)

https://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/finance/2018/january/how-much-do-you-need-to-retire-learn-how-to-calculate-your-retirement-income-needs
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The next step is to determine what net annual income will be necessary upon retirement. The easiest method I have seen is simply to review a current pay stub and use the “net income” on the pay stub as a good starting point to know how much money is needed in retirement to maintain your lifestyle. I recommend this because some expenses may go up in retirement and some may go down. Many clients might not want to change their lifestyle in retirement, i.e., they want to live off the same income pre- and post-retirement. It’s all part of the discovery process, but I err on the side of overestimating these needs initially.)

http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/370944-some-state-dept-employees-retain-lawyers-amid-career-concerns-report
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Several State Department employees are retaining lawyers amid concerns that their careers are now being stalled because of past work on policies and initiatives championed by former President Obama. According to a Friday CNN report, frustration is growing among some at the department, who returned to Foggy Bottom from high-level assignments only to be put on low-level jobs such as responding to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Many of the workers who have been reassigned under the Trump administration previously worked in the offices of special envoys created during the Obama administration. But Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has over the past year moved to do away with some of the special offices created by Obama. Other offices were absorbed by regional bureaus, and some responsibilities were folded into the State Department’s Policy Planning Office, CNN reported. Officials who previously worked in those offices have been assigned to clerical tasks they say do not match up with their ranks. Some allege that they may be victims of political retribution.)

Scott Walker. Hannah said she did not know where her mother got the false nose but that she “always has it with her.” The speech went down well, Hannah thought. Not everyone in the room agreed. DAILY HERALD
— Roskam: Tax bill law modernizes rules, promotes growth – Marie Wilson (DIERSEN: Government should encourage home ownership. According to this article, “Critics say the tax law discourages homeownership and could decrease charitable giving because the higher standard deduction will lead fewer filers to itemize. To both of these, Roskam says the answer is economic growth, which he says the tax law will provide. The more the economy grows, the more money people have, they more likely they are to buy houses, he says. And the more money that people make, the more that they have to give.” But what about those, including retired people like the Diersens, who do not benefit from “economic growth?” It seems that the tax law encourages lower interest rates because it reduces the incentive to borrow money to buy/build a home. Young people, who typically are borrowers, benefit from low interest rates, while older people, who typically are savers, suffer from low interest rates.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180126/roskam-tax-bill-law-modernizes-rules-promotes-growth
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One immediate effect of the tax law sparked a flurry of suburban residents prepaying property taxes, in hopes the payments can be deducted under old rules. New rules cap the amount of state and local taxes that can be deducted at $10,000, and many in the 6th District pay more than that in property taxes alone. “The new law was silent as to the ability to prepay property taxes,” Roskam said, but he said he is working closely with the Internal Revenue Service and the House Ways and Means Committee to try to ensure people will see the advantage of early payment. Still, he said analyzing the whole array of changes, including a standard deduction increased to $24,000 for couples and a child tax credit doubled to $2,000, the law will produce positive results. He said a sample family in the 6th District — with a median income of $135,000 a year for a husband, wife and two children — is predicted to receive a $4,000 tax cut. “When you evaluate all of these things,” Roskam said, “even if the deductions go down, the way the rates are structured, it offers tax relief.” Critics say the tax law discourages homeownership and could decrease charitable giving because the higher standard deduction will lead fewer filers to itemize. To both of these, Roskam says the answer is economic growth, which he says the tax law will provide. The more the economy grows, the more money people have, they more likely they are to buy houses, he says. And the more money people make, the more they have to give. “We’re a generous country,” he said. “We celebrate this. We want a big civil society because we, as a country, have made a cultural decision as Americans that we highly value the nonprofit sector.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The governors said during a call with reporters that the bill unfairly affects their states with its repeal of state and local tax deductibility, the first federal double taxation in U.S. history. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said there were “very strong” arguments that the bill violates states’ rights as well as the Equal Protection clause in the U.S. Constitution. “The top 12 states that get hurt (by the bill) coincidentally all happen to be Democratic states,” Cuomo said, adding he had spoken with California Governor Jerry Brown about potential actions against the bill. The sweeping Republican tax bill signed into law by U.S. President Donald Trump introduced a $10,000 cap on deductions of state and local income and property taxes, known as SALT. The SALT provision will affect many taxpayers in states with high incomes, property values and taxes, including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and California.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: The Democrat news media gets the scoop that Durante has “stepped aside” as the Addison Township GOP chairman and that Kachiroubas is replacing him. I first dealt with Durante 29 years ago in 1989 when I sought Hyde’s help in dealing with the Democrats who ran GAO’s Chicago office. Since 1989, Durante has done more than any other Republican Party leader to shape how people view me, view my intelligence, view my judgment, view my abilities, view my motives, view my accomplishments, view my knowledge of IRS, view how the Democrats who ran GAO, IRS, and the Post Office treated me, view my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails, etc.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-raoul-kelly-trump-speech-20180126-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Longtime GOP leader steps aside: A longtime, storied Republican political operative from DuPage County stepped aside from his post as Addison Township GOP chairman on Wednesday night. “The reason for my departure are the stupid things going on in the Republican Party, some of the candidates running, and the fact that I will be 78 in March,” Pat Durante wrote in a note. “If I were 20 years younger I would enjoy taking the gloves off and going blow for blow, but I need a break.” Durante is a former top aide to the late U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde. He has long decried the decline of civility in politics. In the last election, he was a backer of Ohio Gov. John Kasich for president – and wasn’t thrilled with Trump’s victory. At the same time, he was known as a “gentleman street fighter” when he opposed you in an election, said DuPage County Circuit Court Clerk Chris Kachiroubas, who committeemen picked to replace Durante. “He would take you on — throw everything at you but the kitchen sink (sometimes the kitchen sink) — and if he lost he would be the first call you received to congratulate you.” Durante has led the Addison Township Republican Organization that served as Hyde’s base since 1974. Durante was known for running GOP campaigns and turning out the vote — while teaching other political operatives how it was done. He also explained how things worked to quite a few cub reporters. Durante said he plans to continue to play a role as a committeeman, if not head of the organization. “I will continue to run all the campaigns in Addison Township for all the candidates that are endorsed by the ATRO and will also act as an adviser,” he wrote.)

January 25 Morning Edition

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Rauner stays out of public eye, avoids questions about mansion meeting (DIERSEN: I should write a book about activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. who state that they are conservative and/or Republican, but who a) pander to Rich Miller and to the rest of the Democrat news media in Illinois, b) do not want me to know about their press conferences, c) do not want me to attend their press conferences, d) do not want me to ask them questions during their press conferences, and e) do not want me to report on their press conferences. To discredit me, they stress that I do not have a degree in journalism, that no one pays me for what I do for you as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor, that no one pays for GOPUSA ILLINOIS email subscriptions, that www.gopillinois.com and GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails do not contain any advertising, that the Illinois Republican Party, DuPage County Republican Central Committee, Milton Township Republican Central Committee, etc. do not promote www.gopillinois.com or promote GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails, etc.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-mansion-meeting-20180125-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For the third day in a row, Gov. Bruce Rauner doesn’t have any public events scheduled, so reporters won’t get a chance to ask him about a lawsuit that says he had a 2015 meeting about an investment on the back porch of the governor’s mansion.)
— It was to be a “rollout of major endorsements,” according to an advisory sent out by the campaign of Jeanne Ives, the three-term Wheaton lawmaker challenging Gov. Rauner in the Republican primary. But when a reporter arrived at the Union League Club of Chicago for the scheduled 1:30 p.m. event, a person at the front desk said the Ives news conference had already occurred — at 11:30 a.m. The Ives campaign apologized for the mistake and released video of the endorsers as well as the candidate. For the record, Ives picked up the backing of Republican state Reps. Peter Breen of Lombard, Allen Skillicorn of East Dundee, Tom Morrison of Palatine and Margo McDermed of Mokena. She already had the support of Reps. David McSweeney of Barrington Hills and Barb Wheeler of Crystal Lake, along with state Sens. Kyle McCarter of Lebanon and Tim Bivins of Dixon. – Rick Pearson

— Here’s a look at the world on a billionaire’s budget – Andrew D. Hwang (DIERSEN: What harms your budget the most? For me, it is my $51,864 Civil Service Retirement System pension being only 41% of my $125,325 GAO salary in today’s dollars. But nevertheless, I continue to have enough money that I can spend 10+ hours each and every day putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out without having to ask anyone to give me money. He who pays the piper calls the tunes. I ask the operatives and the dupes who work for my critics/opponents, who calls their tunes? Are my critics/opponents paying the operatives and dupes at least $15 an hour? Do they report that income on their tax returns?)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-perspec-billionaire-gates-bezos-spending-power-0125-20180124-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The world’s wealthiest are prospering. As of February 2017, there were about 2,000 billionaires in the world. This micro-elite controls over $7.6 trillion, an increase of 18 percent from 2016. A billionaire’s spending power is difficult to grasp, both because most people do not correctly intuit large numbers, and because a billion dollars far outstrips most people’s experience. What does a household budget look like to a billionaire? To find out, let’s scale down a billionaire’s income to $50,000, the median American income, adjusting budget items proportionally.)

— Flatlanders of Illinois shouldn’t rush to get a Rocky Mountain high – Editorial (DIERSEN: If you promote pot, you promote destruction.)
http://www.bnd.com/opinion/editorials/article196449134.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: “We also support legalizing small amounts of marijuana, which could bring in a few billions of dollars,” Democratic candidate Tio Hardiman told the Sun-Times. He’s blowing smoke. Billions in taxes only come with bales of pot. Republicans see a problem. Incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner said Illinois should wait and see the impacts in Colorado and California, allowing them to experiment on their people, especially their youth, before we subject ours to recreational marijuana use. His March 20 primary opponent, state Rep. Jeanne Ives, said impacts are already evident — literally. She cited the 48 percent boost in Colorado’s marijuana-related traffic deaths and boost in youth use of the drug. Not to mention, until the U.S. Congress changes federal law on marijuana, no state should be in the business of making it legal. It is one thing to decide the priority we place and resources we use on crimes related to marijuana. It is another to be so irresponsible, undisciplined and unimaginative about your state’s fiscal salvation that the only path you can see is taxation and proliferation of weed, especially without knowing how many lives you will lose or ruin.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Congress’s use of repeated continuing resolutions rather than a full budget authorization to fund the government damages the Congressional Budget Office’s ability to effectively produce reports, director Keith Hall told members of the Senate Budget Committee on Wednesday. “It does make things harder. We’ve actually put off some things that we weren’t intending to put off, some computer work and some things like that,” said Hall. “If we continue under a CR, right now we’ll have to curtail our hiring, we’ll have to move down a few slots, we’ll have to cancel some training and travel. So it does have a consequence for us. — What Does It Mean To Be A ‘Trump Supporter’? – David Marcus (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those in Illinois, in DuPage County, in Milton Township, in Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, and in my precinct who hate Trump and hate his supporters. In addition to being anti-Trump, they are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
http://thefederalist.com/2018/01/23/what-does-it-mean-to-support-trump/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Do you support Trump?” It is one of the most loaded and divisive questions that can be asked in America today. But what does it mean? What does a yes or no tell us about the people being asked? Does it tell us anything about their views, policy preferences, hopes for the country? With Trump’s reelection campaign two years away, is it essentially a moot question? Is it akin to asking if you support the Astros as World Series champions when, after all, until next October, what difference does it make? Typically, in cases of presidents so far from a reelection bid, we think in terms of approval, not support. There is a subtle but vital difference between the two concepts. What we approve or disapprove of is job performance, not the person. What we support, on the other hand, is the person, not the policies or accomplishments.)

In 1975, my Democrat IRS superiors got rid of my mentor who had promoted me in 1972, 1973, and 1974. In 1987, my Democrat GAO superiors got rid of my mentor who had hired me in 1980, got me assigned to audits of IRS in 1986, and promoted me in 1986. I should write a book about those who my critic/opponents have destroyed because they stood up for me. My nasty, vicious critics/opponents have lots of religious, government, political, and financial clout in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois. They focus on destroying those like me a) who refuse to glorify and praise them, b) who refuse to pander to them, c) who refuse to serve as one of their operatives or dupes, and d) who refuse to give them money.)
https://www.theblaze.com/news/2018/01/22/a-report-says-trump-wanted-fbi-deputy-director-fired-heres-why-he-still-has-the-job
(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to a report Monday from Axios, President Trump ordered FBI Director Christopher Wray to fire the deputy director, Andrew McCabe. The report says that Director Wray objected to the order and told the president that if McCabe were fired, he’d retire as well. Since the administration was already under fire for jettisoning James Comey from the FBI, the report explains, Trump backed down from his order.)

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/01/how-federal-workers-spent-their-unexpected-day-off/551180/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One analyst working in the Government Accountability Office told me in an email that he was mentally preparing himself for a days- or even weeks-long period without pay due to the government shutdown. But now that a deal has been reached, he said, “today just feels like one of the lesser holidays, like Columbus Day.” The analyst, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the press, said he and his wife spent the afternoon at Costco, stocking up on toilet paper, eggs, and milk. He also split a slice of pizza with his daughter. “All in all, not a bad deal in exchange for congressional inaction,” he told me.)
