(FROM THE ARTICLE: ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. – In response to a Northwest Herald report that Bruce Rauner met with Diane Evertsen, the former president of Minutemen Midwest, a group the Southern Poverty Law Center labeled a nativist extremist group, state Rep. Sam Yingling (D-Grayslake) issued the following statement: “Instead of negotiating in good faith to pass a state budget or working to reduce local property taxes, Bruce Rauner spent last weekend meeting with the former leader of Minutemen Midwest, a group the Southern Poverty Law Center labeled a “nativist extremist” group. There’s no place in for the fear-mongering tactics and conspiracy theories these extremist groups espouse in our state, and I applaud Representative Dave McSweeney, a Republican from McHenry County, for demanding an apology from Bruce Rauner, the head of the Illinois GOP. I join my colleague across the aisle in demanding an apology from this failed governor and hope other local elected officials and candidates will as well.”)

The president’s comments came in an early morning tweet on Wednesday. He pointed out 91 percent of the “network news about me is negative (fake).” Trump appeared to be referencing a report by the Media Research Center. The MRC had looked at broadcast evening news reports of Trump from Jan. 1 through April 30 and “found 90 percent of the evaluative comments about the president were negative.” The report examined 1,065 network evening news stories about Trump and key members of his administration. And it noted the “hostile coverage” from ABC, CBS and NBC. According to the study, The Russia “collusion” story was given the most time on the broadcasts of all stories regarding the administration. The MRC reported it took up 321 minutes or nearly one-fifth of all Trump administration coverage. The study was a topic of conversation on TV’s “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday. The president is a longtime viewer of the show.)

https://www.federaltimes.com/federal-oversight/congress/2018/05/09/congressman-calls-out-opm-targeting-of-feds-retirement-benefits/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, wrote to Office of Personnel Management Director Jeff Pon May 9, 2018, to express “strong opposition” to a recent letter in which the director proposed sweeping cuts and increased contributions to federal employee retirement. “Federal employees are the cornerstone of an effective and efficient federal government. Our country relies on these talented men and women to perform critical duties across all sectors of government, from national security and healthcare to economic expansion and infrastructure development,” Turner wrote. Turner’s opposition as a Republican is notable, as Democrats have traditionally held a strong line against cutting federal employee benefits in order to balance the budget. Pon’s legislative proposals would likely require fairly unified Republican support to pass into actual legislation. According to a news release on the letter of opposition, Turner’s district contains 30,000 federal employees that would likely be impacted by the proposed changes. Turner took particular issue with aspects of OPM’s proposals that would impact current employees and retirees, such as increases in retirement contributions for current employees and the elimination of cost-of-living adjustments for all current and future retirees under the Federal Employee Retirement System. “This breaks a promise to current federal employees and retirees. We should not arbitrarily make changes to policies that families have planned their lives around, particularly when it affects current retirees with limited ability to make up for unanticipated reductions in estimated income,” wrote Turner. Pon justified the proposed changes as bringing the government more in line with private sector practices, though some have argued that prospective employees are attracted to the government over the private sector due to more generous retirement packages. “In order to ‘recruit, retain and honor a world-class workforce to serve the American people’ as OPM seeks, the federal government must maintain a competitive benefits package befitting such a workforce. With the United States’ growing economy and a tightening labor market, we cannot afford to make the federal government a less attractive place to work by diminishing the very benefits that help the government keep pace with jobs in the (often higher-paying) private sector,” Turner wrote.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Lake County Board members could soon find themselves in a debate whether to place support behind gun control regulations or whether to send a letter to state legislators declaring the county a “sanctuary” against stricter gun laws. Thomas Quigley, of Round Lake Beach, and military veteran Ceasar Soto, of Waukegan, appeared Tuesday before the Lake County Board to speak out against a previous statement made by District 11 county board member Paul Frank about a possible ban of automatic weapons. Quigley requested board members immediately declare Lake County “a sanctuary county for all gun owners,” then told “the gun grabbers on the board to read the U.S. Constitution and study history; all governmental tyranny begins with gun confiscation.” Quigley and Soto spoke up because of statements made during the closing moments of the March 13 county board meeting where Frank, a Democrat from Highland Park, hinted it could be time the board enters the debate on the national gun issue.)

She said a state created group should not be based on sex segregation and cited major media to prove her point. The Atlantic shows boys dominate in high school drop outs and learning disabilities, and the Washington Post revealed boys in America continue to fall behind girls in academics, according to Ives. Ives questioned the bill’s legality as far as the Equal Rights Amendment is concerned and noted as a mother of boys and a girl, the notion to form a group for one gender is ridiculous. “I think we should emphasize both of our children’s sexes, both men and women as well,” Ives said. HB5544 passed 64-24 and moved to the Senate.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— The U.S. and China: More Alike Than We’d Like? – Thomas L. Friedman
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/08/opinion/us-china-more-alike.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In Washington these days it is not uncommon for people to be invited to a dinner or a public gathering and think to themselves: “I hope none of them will be there.” And the them people are talking about is not someone of a different faith or race — which would be awful enough — but it’s someone just from a different political party. In other words, in both Beijing and Washington, self-censorship, and biting one’s tongue, is more rife than ever — but for different reasons. In Beijing it’s so you won’t get arrested. In Washington it’s so you won’t get into a fight. In both cases, though, the net results are fewer people talking truth across ideological lines. At the same time, in China today, if you’re a Communist Party official or senior bureaucrat, you have to toe the ruling party’s line or you could be quickly purged or imprisoned. In America today, if you’re a Republican Party congressman or senator, you, too, have to toe the ruling party’s line or you could be quickly purged or primaried — or get a tweet in the back from the president. But there is one difference: In China’s ruling Communist Party, it’s never safe to criticize the president. In America’s ruling Republican Party, you can criticize the president, or vote your conscience, if you’re dying, retiring or whispering.)

— McSweeney: Gov. Bruce Rauner should apologize for meeting with ‘known extremist’ Diane Evertsen David McSweeney attacks governor for meeting with ‘known extremist’ Diane Evertsen – ED KOMENDA  (DIERSEN: Why did Rauner meet privately with the leaders of the McHenry County Republican Party? What if Rauner met privately with the leaders of your Republican county party organization and/or with the leaders of your Republican township/ward party organization? In the 2002 Illinois Republican gubernatorial primary, Corrine Wood called Jim Ryan an extremist.)
http://www.nwherald.com/2018/05/08/mcsweeney-gov-bruce-rauner-should-apologize-for-meeting-with-known-extremist-diane-evertsen/adt9cfh/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A state lawmaker is lambasting Gov. Bruce Rauner after Illinois’ top leader met with members of the McHenry County Republican Party over the weekend in private. Rauner spent part of his Saturday at an invitation-only roundtable at the McHenry County GOP’s Crystal Lake headquarters – an event featuring a Who’s Who of party insiders, including: McHenry County Sheriff Bill Prim, McHenry County State’s Attorney Patrick Kenneally and McHenry County Board Member Jim Kearns. But State Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, took issue with someone else in attendance at the Saturday meet-up: McHenry County’s new chairwoman, Diane Evertsen, who at one time served as president of the Minutemen Midwest – an organization the Southern Poverty Law Center designated a “nativist extremist” group. “The governor should apologize for meeting with a known extremist,” said McSweeney, who heard about the meeting after it happened. McSweeney pointed to Evertsen’s association with Minutemen Midwest, which the SPLC named several times on its annual list of nativist extremist groups between 2007 and 2010. The Alabama-based civil rights nonprofit defines nativist extremist groups as organizations that go beyond mere advocacy to personally confront suspected undocumented immigrants or those who hire or help them. McSweeney said a simple Google search reveals the views of the group Evertsen chaired. The legislator characterized those views as “disgraceful.” Minutemen Midwest had a website – www.minutemenmidwest.com – but it has been taken down since its launch. While the site is dead, some of the material published there is recoverable with the internet archive known as the “Wayback Machine,” McSweeney said. McSweeney highlighted an article published on the website written by William H. Calhoun titled “Illegal Immigration: Third-World Invasion” – a piece suggesting the U.S. is under threat by immigrants of different “blood.” “Invaders from the Orient, Asia, Africa, Central and South America are invading the first world, and they are intent only upon conquest,” the article said. “With the exception of a very small upper class of pure European blood, most Mexicans are either Amerindian or Mestizo (mostly Amerindian with a few drops of Spaniard or African blood). They are not Western; genealogically they are Asiatic; and they despise the West.” The article appalled McSweeney, he said. “It’s probably the most extreme article that I’ve read in a long time,” McSweeney said. “It’s disgusting.” Evertsen, a 73-year-old Harvard grandmother who once served on the McHenry County Board and now serves on McHenry County College’s board of trustees, could not be reached for comment. The Northwest Herald also reached out to Gov. Rauner’s campaign communications director for comment, but campaign officials weren’t immediately available Tuesday. About 20 people attended the Saturday gathering, according to sources invited to the event.)

(Paid for by our outrageous property taxes, by the way.) This bill (SB3249) also requires schools to teach about the illegal deportation of Mexicans during the Great Depression and labor union contributions to our economy. And children will not be permitted to graduate eighth grade if they don’t receive this instruction. Holy political agenda, Democrats! But, perhaps you are sincerely interested in teaching our children an accurate and nondiscriminatory account of our history. If this is true, you must necessarily include a unit on the societal benefits that Catholics have contributed toward Illinois’ schools, hospitals and charities. The impact is quite significant. I would encourage anyone reading this to demand that your particular group be recognized in a mandatory history unit as well. After everyone feels good about being recognized, there might be a few minutes left in the school day for reading, writing and arithmetic.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Companies trying to rectify a legacy of discrimination are finding that some tactics are backfiring and sparking new grievances. The Wing, a women’s shared-office space and networking club, has drawn such ire. Its no-men-allowed membership policy for collaboration spaces in trendy New York neighborhoods is designed to attract like-minded women professionals who want to encourage and invest in one another. The Wing recently opened a Washington, D.C., location and there is a wait list for a future office in Los Angeles, the company says. In March, the New York City Human Rights Commission launched an investigation into the Wing’s practices, which include workshops on political organization and panels reserved for members featuring celebrities and U.S. legislators. Seth Hoy, a spokesman for the New York commission, confirmed the agency’s probe and declined to comment on it further. He says the agency works to ensure that businesses comply with laws prohibiting gender discrimination. The inquiry is one of the latest examples of how female-only initiatives and other diversity efforts are drawing objections from those who feel left out or challenge the idea that people in historically underrepresented groups need targeted resources to help them accelerate in their careers and are raising concerns that the programs unfairly exclude other people.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Ives, McSweeney endorse Shaw for GOP chairman – Glenn Minnis (DIERSEN: Questions for your Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee (SCC) member:

– What are the times, locations, and agendas of the May 19 IRP SCC and Illinois Republican County Chairman’s Association meetings in Springfield?
– Do the agendas include public comment periods, and if so, how long and how many minutes will each speaker be limited to?
– What is the status of potential Winchester litigation against the IRP?
– If the 15th Congressional District (CD) IRP SCC position is still in dispute on May 19, will the vote for IRP chairman be postponed or will the vote be taken without the 12.1% 15th CD weighted vote?
– Do you agree with those who believe that if Rose casts the 15th CD weighted vote, Schneider will be reelected and if the vote is taken without the 15th CD weighted vote, or if Winchester casts it, Shaw will be elected?
– In the past, especially in 2005 and 2013, many have sought the IRP chairman position. Why are only two seeking the position now?
– Will the IRP allow Ives to speak in favor of Shaw at the May 19 IRP SCC meeting?
– Who does Schneider want the IRP Executive Director to be? Who does Shaw want the IRP Executive Director to be?
– Would it be correct to say that you will only vote for an IRP chairman candidate who can and will defend and advance all the planks in the Republican Party platform and the IRP platform, including their traditional family, right to life, and immigration planks?
– What is your weighted vote and which IRP chairman candidate are you going to vote for and why?
– How many chairs will the IRP set up for observers at the IRP SCC meeting: 100, 200, 300, 400, 500+?

— REPUBLICAN DISUNITY WATCH – Natasha Korecki

(FROM THE ARTICLE: During an interview with CLTV’s Paul Lisnek on Monday, state Rep. Jeanne Ives went on a tear against Gov. Bruce Rauner and Tim Schneider, the Illinois Republican Party chairman the governor is backing. Ives, who narrowly lost to Rauner in the March primary, is supporting Schneider’s opponent Mark Shaw in a heated fight over the GOP throne. Among the reasons Ives is backing Shaw: she blames Schneider for the Nazi candidate running as a Republican in Illinois’ 3rd congressional district. “So he’s alienating the base by propping up Schneider again, and Schneider has failed. Look we have 37 state reps, Democrats, unopposed in this coming up election. It is the party chairman’s responsibility to find opponents. We have an avowed Nazi sitting as a Republican in a congressional race, and that’s wrong too. And then on top of it, the entire emphasis from Tim Schneider and Rauner et al over the last campaign cycle is simply to get Rauner elected, and so much of what they did in terms of data collection and everything else did not support our state reps. We need a whole new vision for our party, and a whole new way to attract voters.” And then there’s this exchange. Ouch: Lisnek: “If polls look close come November and it looks like Pritzker could pull it out, would that be enough of a scare for you to look at your supporters and say it’s ok, vote Rauner?” Ives: “I can’t predict what the future’s going to look like, umm, in a few months, so we’ll just see what’s going on.”)

— Illinois Cleared for New Mental Health, Addiction Pilot Programs – Amanda Vinicky
https://chicagotonight.wttw.com/2018/05/07/illinois-cleared-new-mental-health-addiction-pilot-programs
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As is the question over who will be the party’s next leader. Rauner’s hand-selected chairman, Cook County Commissioner Tim Schneider, faces a challenge from Lake County GOP Chairman Mark Shaw, who has won the endorsement of state Rep. Jeanne Ives, who narrowly lost the gubernatorial nomination to Rauner. Ives in a statement said Schneider’s “tenure has been an unmitigated disgrace” and lauds Shaw’s credentials as a “common sense conservative.” Rauner on Monday said Schneider is a “great chairman” and that he supports his re-election by the Republican State Central Committee on May 19. But the governor said, “I also don’t spend any time really thinking about that.” Rauner pushed back against the suggestion that the intra-party divide is a reflection of his own leadership. “Going back as far as I know, and I’ve lived in Illinois my whole life … there have been fights and disagreement and challenges many times over the years. It’s … part of the process,” Rauner said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “What’s different about the job guarantee is that it is universal and it’s permanent. So it’s an option that would exist not only in times of massive unemployment but it also would exist in times where the unemployment rate is lower,” Darity said. “But we still have large numbers of bad jobs. — Morrison talks tax deductions, redistricting at town hall – Steve Sadin (DIERSEN: Roskam should increase the $10,000 SALT cap to $20,000 for married filing jointly.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/deerfield/news/ct-dfr-morrison-town-hall-tl-0510-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When the Internal Revenue Code was amended Dec. 22 limiting state and local tax deductions to $10,000, it meant Illinois residents who pay more than $10,000 in state income tax and local property tax could no longer deduct the entire amount, according to Morrison. “We have so many people in my district who rely on the state and local tax deduction,” said Morrison, who is the chief senate sponsor of the bill. Less than three weeks after the federal tax overhaul became law, state Rep. Jonathan Carroll (D-Northbrook) introduced his SALT Deduction Act Jan. 11. He said the law would create an Illinois Education Excellence Fund. When people pay their state and local taxes, Carroll said the money will go into the fund. They will then get a tax credit they can use as a charitable donation restoring the full deduction they have had in the past. Similar action is under consideration in other states. “The new (federal) law was a punch in the gut to a lot of folks,” Carroll said in a separate interview. “This will keep them from being double taxed.” Morrison said using the charitable deduction as part of taxpayers’ planning is completely voluntary. It is her hope it will be passed by the Senate and sent to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s desk before the current legislative session is set to end May 31.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Lang said some on the Republican side “haven’t committed one way or the other” and attributed that to “people on the far right,” referring to some opposing groups that contend the Equal Rights Amendment would enshrine abortion in the U.S. Constitution and undermine religious freedoms. “It has nothing whatsoever to do with abortion, it has nothing whatsoever to do with gay rights or bathrooms or football scholarships or the draft or anything else that those folks are peddling,” Lang said. “It has to do with giving women equal rights under the United States Constitution. That’s all it’s about.”)
— GOP Rep. Wehrli wants a constitutional convention (DIERSEN: Illinois Democrats have made it extremely clear that if there was a constitutional convention, they would use it to get rid of individuals, organizations, and companies that are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, draft avoiders, and those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)

But Oldsmobile withdrew that job offer saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. That directly resulted in my accepting a job offer from IRS.)

DAILY HERALD
— Estimated tax savings appears to be inflated – Tom Teune, Wheaton (DIERSEN: Government is nasty. Politics is nasty. What is your household income? The Diersen’s household income is far less than $135,000. My Civil Service Retirement System pension is only $51,864 and my Social Security is only $2,064. My critics/opponents who have more income than I do use that to paint me as being a financial failure. My critics/opponents who have less income than I do use that to paint me as being a undeservedly filthy rich.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/discuss/20180507/estimated-tax-savings-appears-to-be-inflated
(FROM THE LETTER: In the Daily Herald’s March 22 issue, Peter Roskam is quoted saying that the median income of a family of four in the 6th congressional district is $135,000. And it stands to save $4,000 in 2018 federal income taxes. My senses told me that Rep. Roskam’s numbers were inflated, so I searched a number of sources and selected the highest 6th District family income given by the federal government’s Census Bureau. The Census Bureau reports the district’s median family income is $98,000. I also calculated the income taxes at both levels and found that a family owning a home with a mortgage would save only $2,000 at Roskam’s suggested median income and only a few hundred dollars at the Census Bureau’s reported median income.)

JEANNE IVES
— Ives, McSweeney Endorse Shaw For ILGOP Chairman
https://mailchi.mp/619817ea37f1/ives-mcsweeney-endorse-shaw-for-ilgop-chairman
(FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT: “Mark Shaw has a record as a commonsense conservative who is unafraid to stand up for our party platform and take on the political ruling class in Illinois,” said Ives. “He will work with all members of our party to win races so we can pull this state back from the brink of financial disaster. The current chair has demonstrated neither the willingness or ability to advance our party in such a direction.” “Simply put, Chairman Schneider has failed as our state party chairman. Under his leadership dozens of Democrats went unchallenged in state legislative seats, he alienated the conservative ILGOP base in the gubernatorial race by choosing sides in a primary, and under Schneider’s leadership a man who proudly associates with the Nazi party is on the ballot as a Republican. His tenure has been an unmitigated disgrace,” Ives continued. After the disastrous 2017 legislative year, during which 15 legislative Republicans joined Democrats to enact the largest permanent tax increase in the history of the state, McSweeney said, “if we cannot agree on no new taxes as Republicans, then we cannot agree on anything. Tim Schneider failed to unite our party against a massive tax increase.” McSweeney went on to say, “Mark Shaw is a solid conservative who will work to expand the Republican Party. Tim Schneider, Chairman of the Illinois Rauner Party, is an inept insider who has badly damaged the party of Lincoln and Reagan.” Both legislators have served in the Illinois General Assembly since 2013 and have led on issues of tax cuts, government accountability and spending reform. Ives plans to attend the ILGOP State Central Committee meeting on May 19th in Springfield where the election for state party chairman is scheduled to take place.)

May 5 Morning Edition

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— JUNE 1, 2013 FLASHBACK: Lobbyist Jack Dorgan is new Illinois GOP party chairman – Monique Garcia (DIERSEN: I was there while “Each candidate had five minutes to sell themselves to members of the Republican State Central Committee before the group conducted closed door interviews.”)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-illinois-republican-gop-chairman-jack-dorgan-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republican leaders on Saturday choose a lobbyist and Rosemont trustee to serve as state party chairman following several hours of closed door talks. Jack Dorgan’s selection follows the resignation of former chair Pat Brady, who came under fire for bucking the Republican platform when he announced his support for gay marriage. “We’ve had some growing pains right now, and we’re ready, we’re united, were going to move forward and show people there’s a two-party system (in Illinois),” said Dorgan, who was the favorite entering deliberations. Dorgan has long been involved in Republican politics, beginning as an aide to the late Rep. Roger McAuliffe, who long held the designation as the only Republican legislator from Chicago. Dorgan also served as deputy chief of staff to former House Speaker Lee Daniels and as an aide to Gov. Jim Thompson and director of the Liquor Control Commission under Gov. Jim Edgar. But Dorgan also has close ties to Illinois’ ruling Democrats. He founded a lobbying practice with James McPike, a former majority leader for House Speaker Michael Madigan, who doubles as Illinois Democratic Party chairman. The firm’s clients include Ameren, AT&T, Fairmount Park race track, the Illinois Hospital Association and the Illinois Asphalt Pavement Association, a group formerly headed by Bill Cellini, who is now serving prison time after being convicted of federal corruption charges. Other finalists for the position included Hinsdale businessman Jim Nalepa; Angel Garcia, head of the Chicago Young Republicans; Lake Forest attorney Mark Shaw; Springfield lawyer Don Tracy; Chicago attorney Lori Yokoyama and former congressman and tea party activist Joe Walsh. Each candidate had five minutes to sell themselves to members of the Republican State Central Committee before the group conducted closed door interviews. Deliberations were not open to the public, but officials said Dorgan won after the first round of balloting.)
— Cook County clerk on how, when and where people voted — or didn’t vote — in March primary – Ted Slowik (DIERSEN: In your precinct, what do you think the main reasons are why a) registered Republican voters cast or did not cast Republican ballots, b) registered Democrat voters cast or did not cast Democrat ballots, c) unaffiliated voters cast or did not cast Republican or Democrat ballots, d) registered Republican voters changed their party affiliation by casting Democrat ballots, and e) registered Democrat voters changed their party affiliation by casting Republican ballots? Why do voters who cast Republican ballots vote for candidates in contested races, but not for candidates in uncontested races?)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/daily-southtown/news/ct-sta-slowik-post-election-report-st-0506-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Before the March gubernatorial primary fades into memory and voters focus on November, let’s take a moment to review a few details about the most recent election. This analysis comes courtesy of the office of distinguished public servant and retiring Cook County Clerk David Orr. His office on Wednesday released its post-election report for the March primary. Orr’s office is one of a handful of county clerks that provides the detailed post-mortem statistical analysis. The clerk’s website has post-election reports dating back to 2008. “We send it to a few friends,” Orr told me Friday. “If we get a good idea from somewhere else we adapt it. Every year we build on it.” The 110-page report is full of data about voter behavior, trends and historical analysis. For some, this dense study might seem like a cure for insomnia. But political geeks can discover compelling nuggets about when, how and where people voted — or didn’t vote. The March primary saw record-breaking or near-record setting marks in the number of registered voters, voters who took part in the election, the percentage of voters who participated in early voting and the overall turnout rate, the report said. “There are some fascinating findings,” Orr told me. “One result was the amazing percentage of Democratic ballots versus Republican ballots.” In March, 76 percent of suburban Cook County voters pulled Democratic ballots. That ties with the February 2008 primary for the highest percentage in the past 24 years. The lowest rate of Democratic ballots pulled since 1994 was in March 2014, at just 45 percent. “I don’t think it’s a case of Republicans not voting so much as it is greater numbers of Democrats turning out,” Orr said. “You had hot races for governor in both parties and several other hot contests.” Statewide, incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner eked out a narrow win over challenger Jeanne Ives in the Republican primary. Rauner won with about 52 percent of the vote — an unexpectedly close margin of about 20,000 votes. Rauner carried suburban Cook County by about 10,000 votes, though Ives, a state representative from Wheaton, won in Bremen, Lemont, Thornton and Worth townships. Orr’s post-election report is a deep dive that might give voters in some south suburbs and their party leaders a chance to brag about the success of their ability to get out the vote.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republican Party Chairman Jack Dorgan of Rosemont won’t run for another term and will back Cook County Commissioner Tim Schneider of Bartlett to replace him, he announced Monday. Dorgan, a Rosemont village trustee and Springfield lobbyist, said he’s joining Republican Bruce Rauner’s campaign for governor to co-chair the Winnetka businessman’s finance committee. The Republican State Central Committee is set to pick a new chairman Saturday in Springfield. Dorgan sits on that committee representing the 5th Congressional District. Blair Garber of Evanston, who sits on the committee from the 9th Congressional District, is the only other candidate. But Schneider’s backing from both Rauner and Dorgan gives him a clear advantage going into Saturday’s vote. “It has been my great honor to lead the Illinois Republican Party as chairman over the last year, helping position our candidates across Illinois for an incredible victory this November,” Dorgan said in a statement. Dorgan was first elected to the post a year ago following the resignation of Pat Brady of St. Charles, who was nearly ousted from the job after lobbying state lawmakers to vote for same-sex marriage. Dorgan released his statement jointly with Rauner, whose success or failure at the top of the ticket against Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn is likely to be linked to the party’s fate statewide in November. The party’s chairman is tasked with raising money and trying to help its candidates win in November, a big task for a volunteer job in a state that’s leaned Democratic statewide in recent years. The GOP in Illinois has targeted the governor’s race as its top priority.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— MAY 13, 2014 FLASHBACK: Rauner’s revealing move to replace Illinois GOP chairman
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20140513/BLOGS02/140519950/rauners-revealing-move-to-replace-illinois-gop-chairman
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Bruce Rauner has played his cards incredibly close to the vest since winning the GOP gubernatorial nomination, disclosing almost nothing about who will be on his team, how he’d balance the budget and what his governance style would be. But we may have learned a few things from his decision to oust Jack Dorgan as Illinois GOP chairman and replace him with Cook County Commissioner Tim Schneider. The first thing we learned is that, for a zillionaire used to getting his way, Mr. Rauner sometimes can act with a minimum of fingerprints. Though Crain’s (via an AP story) and other outlets reported this morning that Mr. Dorgan had chosen not to seek a new term as chairman and instead would become co-chair of Mr. Rauner’s finance team, the truth is that he was pushed. Multiple party sources report that Team Rauner was concerned that it didn’t look very good that the state party was headed by a registered lobbyist with an A-list of clients — or that, at a time when incumbent Gov. Pat Quinn is under fire for alleged patronage abuses, Mr. Dorgan had held top political jobs with former Govs. Jim Thompson and Jim Edgar. So squeaky-clean was in and the political warhorse was out. Good for Mr. Dorgan for getting the message and not putting up a fight. But we certainly learned that Mr. Rauner is capable of decisive actions that pull the plug. I think we also discovered that Mr. Rauner is loyal — particularly to people who emulate his mode of politics of being socially moderate and fiscally conservative. BIG EARLY BACKER Mr. Schneider didn’t return my call today. But he was an early, big backer of the Rauner candidacy, and he’s really tight — he once tried to block creation of a county film office as frivolous spending — without having developed a reputation as a social-issues crusader. It also doesn’t hurt a bit that he cuts a nice figure on TV, a crucial skill in this media-driven age. Meanwhile, in statements, Mr. Rauner is praising Mr. Dorgan as “an extraordinary chairman,” and Mr. Dorgan said the party is “firing on all cylinders and ready to deliver a new direction to the people of Illinois.” Mr. Schneider does have one opponent in the vote set for May 17: Blair Garber, the committeeman from the North Side/north suburban 9th District. But I’d be surprised if there was much of a fight. Gubernatorial nominees by tradition get to remake their party. And if this nominee becomes governor, we may have learned a couple of things about how he’d remake Illinois.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: n theory, millions of borrowers are eligible to have their debts forgiven after a decade of public-service work. In practice, the program has produced a litany of frustrations. . .The forgiveness program seemed simple at first glance: Work 10 years as a public servant and the federal government will forgive your loans. But deep, repeated, near-Talmudic parsing of the words revealed the following: Borrowers need to be in exactly the right kind of federal student loan. They need to be in the right kind of repayment plan. They need to pay on time in exactly the right way. And their full-time work has to qualify as proper public service.)

WBBM NEWS RADIO
— Ives Says She Will Vote For Rauner, But Doesn’t Necessarily Think He Will Win – CRAIG DELLIMORE
https://wbbmnews.radio.com/articles/news/ives-says-she-will-vote-rauner-doesnt-necessarily-think-he-will-win
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Representative Jeanne Ives, who lost the narrow GOP Primary election to Governor Bruce Rauner, said he has her vote, but not necessarily her confidence, or that of other conservatives. Representative Jeanne Ives has not resolved her differences with Governor Rauner after their often bitter race. Still, she indicates she’ll vote for him in November. But she doesn’t necessarily expect him to win. “I’m a republican. I will vote for our republican nominee, but other folks are going to make their decisions differently and as I said in the primary, which I still believe is true today, there’s many conservatives who will just skip the top of the ticket, as they did in the Mark Kirk race, and vote Rauner out of office,” she said. Make no mistake, Ives feels that if democrat JB Pritzker wins, his plans for a progressive income tax will drive more people out of the state. “If we go down the road for the democrats. If we go to the progressive income tax, you can watch that you’ll have far more out migration…that is my prediction this year…because of that 32 percent tax increase,” Ives said. So she predicts this will be an interesting time for Illinois. Meanwhile, conservative and moderate republicans may clash over the future of the Illinois GOP as well. Governor Rauner is supporting Illinois GOP chairman Tim Schneider, a Cook County Commissioner, to continue in his role. “We have a very important vote coming up on May 19 as to who is going to be the leader of Illinois GOP. And obviously Governor Rauner has put forward Tim Schneider and many of us conservatives want an alternative to Mr. Schneider and so you have this inter-party feud going on,” she said. Ives said conservatives support Mark Shaw of Lake County over incumbent chairman Tim Scheider, and allies of the Governor are exerting pressure on GOP committeemen. She said the struggle continues.)

In 2015, the Des Plaines Elementary District 62 school board paid a highly regarded search firm $24,750 to help it find and ultimately hire Dr. Williams, who resigned a year and half into the job under allegations he sexually harassed five female district employees.)

https://chicagocitywire.com/stories/511406107-bill-allowing-special-pension-allowance-for-17-chicago-police-fund-members-passes-house
(FROM THE ARTICLE: During Illinois’ colossal pension crisis, Democrats proposed to carve out funds for the Chicago Police Benefit Fund for work performed a decade ago. HB5177, sponsored by Rep. Kelly Burke (D-Evergreen Park), amends the Illinois Pension Code to allow for 17 police officers to receive a hearing to reconsider service credit for investigatory work they performed prior to 2008. . .“It’s actually unaffordable,” Ives said. The bill is just one of many examples over the past few years of that permits pension carve-outs for employees who want to move from one plan to another. “What you see here is the need for massive pension reform, not just at the state level, but really at the local level,” Ives said. The focus should not be on these 17 officers, according to Ives. “Our pension problems that are literally bankrupting local governments,” Ives said. Using Danville as an example of destroying pension debt, Ives said the town has seen a 112 percent increase in the cost of the local pension plans. “They have no idea how they are going to pay back the $105 million in debt they have accumulated, and Chicago is far worse off,” Ives said. Why should the board go back as far as 2008 to possibly reimburse the officers, Breen asked.)

http://www.breitbart.com/2018-elections/2018/05/04/dhs-promises-extra-h2b-workers/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump’s federal agencies will allow companies to bring in an additional 15,000 foreign “guest workers” for use in landscaping, forestry, resorts, and seafood processing, say Maryland seafood executives. The expected offer of 15,000 visas “is very late, and it is not enough,” said Jack Brooks, owner of a seafood company, J.M. Clayton Company, in Cambridge, Md. Maryland’s crab industry has already gotten 300 of 500 H-2B workers it sought, but the absence of the 200 workers has generated an emotional editorial by the Baltimore Sun. The 15,000 extra workers will be added to the annual inflow of 66,000 H-2B visa workers, but few of the extra visas will go to the seasonal seafood industries in Maryland, Texas, and Alaska, Brooks told Breitbart News. The extra visas likely will be distributed via lottery, so the more numerous landscaping and resort companies are likely to win the largest shares of the cheaper workers, said Brooks, who has already received a set of H-2B visas for work this year. The worker giveaway to business is bad news for Republican politicians because it reduces the pressure on business to deliver wage increase to voters before the next election, said Mark Krikorian, director of the Center for Immigration Studies.)

BLOOMBERG
— America is minting more millionaire retirees than ever – Suzanne Woolley (DIERSEN: My Civil Service Retirement System pension is $4,322/month and my federal health, dental, and vision insurance subsidy is $1,500/month for a total of $5,822/month. For me to buy an annuity that would pay me that much for life, it would cost me about $1 million.)
https://www.denverpost.com/2018/05/03/millionaire-retirees/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One of every six retirees in the U.S. is a millionaire (if you include the value of their homes), according to the new report. Their average wealth has risen more than 100 percent since 1989, to $752,000, and the share of those who are millionaires has doubled. More retirees-62 percent-are enjoying life without physical or cognitive limitations, according to the data. That number is up from 49 percent in 1963, the first year such data was taken. . .Income inequality has remained about the same among retirees since 1989. The picture changed dramatically when a household’s financial assets came into play, however. A rising stock market led to a 42 percent rise in wealth inequality among older Americans. “People have held incomes and spending constant over time,” said Matt Fellowes, United Income’s founder and chief executive officer. “The wealthiest retirees are wealthier but are not spending more, relative to previous generations.” Fellowes believes many Americans are being unnecessarily frugal in their spending and are leading “overly contained” lives as a result. The gap between the wealthy and the ultra-wealthy has also widened. The wealth of the median millionaire rose by about 12 percent from 1989 to 2016, while the median millionaire’s equity position was swelling from 27 percent of financial accounts to 55 percent. The wealth of the top 1 percent of millionaires, meanwhile, more than doubled, from $14.9 million to $31.3 million, in 2016 dollars, as their equity positions jumped from 30 percent to 69 percent, according to the report. ”It’s clear that the dividends from being an investor are paying off for retirees fortunate enough to have savings and investments,” said Fellowes. “What’s discouraging is that those who are not saving or investing are just getting left progressively farther and farther behind as each successive generation enters retirement.”)

— Rauner on “unifying” – Rick Pearson (DIERSEN: Are you an elected Republican Precinct Committeeman? I have been one since 2000. Did you vote for Ives? I did. Do you believe that Rauner wants those who voted for Ives to support him? I do not. I believe that Rauner is taking advice from those who tell him that for every Ives voter like me that he drives out of the Illinois Republican Party (IRP), two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten+ Independents, Democrats, Libertarians, Greens, etc. will vote for him in the November 6, 2018 election. To dump Ives voters is to dump those who support the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and the rest of the planks in the IRP platform. To dump Ives voters is to destroy the IRP.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-staff-20180504-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In an appearance on Quad Cities radio, Rauner downplayed any post-primary rifts among Republicans after his narrow victory over state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton last month. Speaking on WOC AM-1420 in Davenport, Iowa, Rauner declared himself a unifier — not just among Republicans, but also with independents and Democrats. “You know primaries are tough. They’re part of the process. I respect the process and now we’re all coming together in the state. We’re unifying all Republicans,” said Rauner, who faces a third-party challenge from Downstate Republican state Sen. Sam McCann and a potential battle over re-electing his hand-picked state GOP chairman. Rauner said his candidacy is one representing Illinoisans against House Speaker Michael Madigan and Democratic governor candidate J.B. Pritzker. “This is not an election that’s really about Republicans versus Democrats. This is about the people of Illinois against a corrupt political machine run by Madigan and Pritzker, and it’s the people against the political insiders,” he said.)
— Rauner’s office doesn’t commit on bill to ban payroll practice known as ‘offshoring’ – Bill Lukitsch (DIERSEN: Since the 1980s, the Democrats who run GAO have done a tremendous amount of offshoring, that is, forcing their employees who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran a) to take their early retirement “offers” or b) to take regular retirement as soon as they are eligible. My Democrat GAO superiors offshored me to the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) in 1997 when I was 49 years old. So far, in today’s dollars, CSRS has paid me $1,071,856.)

https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511404951-attorney-disputed-republican-state-central-committee-race-decided-by-party-staffers-with-personal-and-financial-interests-in-the-outcome
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Boulton also refutes Fogarty’s contentions in his April 30 letter that the election procedure “has always been in place” and that this “procedure is fully authorized by both the Election Code and by IRP leadership.” Boulton writes that no such authorization exists in the Election Code, the IRP bylaws, the State Central Committee or the Executive Committee (IRP leadership). “The procedure may have well have been employed before, but it is not properly authorized and stands in contravention of the plain language of the Election Code,” Boulton wrote. “Repetition of an unlawful practice does not make it legal. If such were true bank robbery would be legal today.” The 18 Republican State Central Committeemen (17 if the race in the 15th remains undecided) meet in Springfield on May 19 to organize the party and elect a state chairman. The results in the 15th congressional district could determine the final outcome in that race. Republican sources say that Mark Shaw, chairman of the Lake County Republicans, is mounting a strong challenge to Schneider. In his April 30 letter to Boulton, Fogarty asked Boulton for details of any improper conduct or incorrect votes alleged by Winchester. “Evidence will have to wait for a proper forum,” Boulton wrote in his reply. Sources tell Prairie State Wire that the dispute will wind up in court if the State Board of Elections fails to step in and certify the results. For its part, a spokesman for the board said it has no authority to audit or investigate intra-party elections.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180504/cops-amp-crime-how-hanover-park-woman-got-justice-for-buddy
(FROM THE ARTICLE: By the time the loose dogs’ owner retrieved them, Buddy lay bloody and battered on the garage floor of the family home. He died later that day at an animal hospital. Over the next few days, Parry met with animal control officials and Hanover Park police. All offered their sympathy but told her there was nothing they could do to help. Parry wasn’t just devastated. She was determined. That paid off Wednesday, when the Illinois Senate unanimously passed the Justice for Buddy Act. ‘This is wrong’ The legislation, also expected to win House approval and Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signature, allows the designation of someone as a “reckless dog owner” if their dog is deemed dangerous for killing another dog and is found running at large twice within 12 months of being deemed dangerous. If that occurs, the owner would have to surrender their dogs to a licensed shelter, rescue or sanctuary, where efforts would be made to find them new homes if possible. A reckless dog owner also would be prohibited from owning dogs for up to three years. The work that led to the act’s creation began when Parry, unsatisfied with the response she was getting from local authorities, reached out to state Sen. Donna Murphy of Des Plaines and state Rep. Michelle Mussman of Schaumburg. Fighting for the legislation for the past year “hasn’t been easy,” she said. . .The dogs that killed Buddy still live in the neighborhood, and Parry admits it’s tough seeing them in their yard when Buddy is gone. However, she said, those dogs’ owners have been “very kind and remorseful” and have even offered support for the Justice for Buddy Act. “We don’t want dogs to be put to sleep, but we want to educate owners and train their dogs,” Parry said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Students released a list of 47 demands Thursday — the 50th anniversary of the Bursar’s Office Takeover — urging the University to improve campus culture for black students, departmentalize the Asian American Studies and Latina and Latino Studies programs, and provide a smooth transition for food service workers. The list, organized by Black Lives Matter NU, the Latinx Asian American Collective and Students Organizing for Labor Rights, said the students want administrators to “clearly and definitively” indicate within two weeks whether they will fulfill the requests. “We hereby condemn the University’s hypocritical co-optation of the Bursar Takeover Commemoration,” the list of demands stated. “We conclude these demands with the promise that failure to comply and take immediate action in enacting them will result in continuous confrontation and direct action.” University spokesman Al Cubbage told The Daily in a statement that administrators will continue to meet with students and alumni to further understand their points of view and work together. “We agree on the critical importance of these topics, and we also agree they merit further examination and additional solutions, wherever possible,” Cubbage said. “This discourse is fundamental to the dynamic nature of Northwestern.”)

— NASA’s Aging Workforce – HALEY BYRD (DIERSEN: To achieve its Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion quotas, goals, and targets, the federal government has an “up or out” policy for its employees who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran. QUESTION: What frustrates that policy? ANSWER: Budget cuts that limit/stop hiring and/or promotions and lack of young qualified job applicants.)
https://www.weeklystandard.com/haley-byrd/nasas-aging-workforce
(FROM THE ARTICLE: During the early years of NASA’s existence, the majority of hires were individuals who were fresh out of college. People who were already in the workforce had higher-level jobs and were making good money at Boeing and other companies, Launius said, and many of them weren’t jumping out of their seats to become civil servants. So when it came to expanding NASA for the Apollo program, “they typically hired a bunch of new college graduates.” He added that it was not uncommon to see 30 to 35 year olds leading important branches of the agency during the 1960’s. “That same job today is usually filled by somebody who’s 50 years old, because they’ve been on the job a lot longer,” said Launius. “That’s just the nature of the aging of the workforce, I would contend, altogether.” And although there are plenty of people who go to work for NASA today, there aren’t as many opportunities for young professionals. “You’ve got people who are in the workforce already and NASA’s not expanding,” he explained. Young engineers and scientists see adventure in the innovative work being done by the private aerospace sector, and many of the people who would have gone to work for NASA during the Apollo era — “Going to the moon was a cool thing to do,” the historian reasoned — are today finding themselves at companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin. But he argued the trend isn’t necessarily bad news for NASA. “A wealth of experience is a good thing, and a person who’s got that is an asset,” he said. At the same time, however, someone could be stuck in their ways, trying to apply methods from 30 years ago to problems that may be more easily solved by recent technology. “It works both ways. It’s not a good thing or a bad thing altogether.”)

Pritzker decided to run for Illinois governor, he and Campaign Manager Anne Caprara talked about a problem that had bedeviled Hillary Clinton and, they feared, might imperil his own candidacy. They were worried about deliberately misleading information spreading far and fast online. They were worried about fake news. So the Pritzker campaign hired the data science group Civis Analytics to conduct an in-depth online survey studying voters who had been exposed to fake news. What it found unsettled the campaign: Even attempts to correct the information didn’t fully undo the damage. Worse yet, the damage was even greater for female candidates.)
