In September of 1997, when I was 49 years old, they succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” thereby forcing the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) to pay me $4,238/month in today’s dollars. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes a) side with my Democrat GAO superiors who always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) side with my Democrat IRS superiors who did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) side with my Democrat Post Office superiors who forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

DAILY CALLER
— No Amnesty Is Good Amnesty – Ann Coulter (DIERSEN: Those who promote amnesty say that those who oppose amnesty are White supremacists, Nazis, KKK members, haters, racists, sexists, bigots, and even worse things.)
http://dailycaller.com/2017/09/13/coulter-no-amnesty-is-good-amnesty/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump is being told that amnesty for “Dreamers,” or DACA recipients, will only apply to a small, narrowly defined group of totally innocent, eminently deserving illegal immigrants, who were brought to this country “through no fault of their own” as “children.” (Children who are up to 36 years old.) Every syllable of that claim is a lie, and I can prove it. To see how DACA will actually work, let’s look at another extremely limited amnesty that was passed in 1986. Farmers wanted temporary guest-worker permits for their cheap labor, so that they could continue pretending that the Industrial Revolution never happened and refuse to mechanize. (And, boy, did that work! We haven’t heard a peep about “crops rotting in the fields” since then. The agricultural amnesty was supposed to apply to — at most — 350,000 illegal aliens. It would be available only to illegals who were currently in the country doing the back-breaking farm work that no American would do. Without them, crops would wither on the vine. They were saving us from starvation! Talk about deserving. Are any Dreamers saving us from starvation? But instead of guest-worker permits, then-Rep. Charles Schumer — from the lush farmland of Brooklyn — decided to grant full amnesty to any illegals who had done farm work for at least 90 days in the previous year. That’s pretty restrictive, isn’t it? In the end, “up to 350,000 farm workers” turned into 1.3 million. Oh well, what are you going to do? No use worrying — let’s just move forward and get all these people voter registration cards! This innocent little amnesty for a small, clearly defined group of illegals quickly became amnesty for anyone who applied. The same thing will happen with any other amnesty, no matter how strictly the law is written. (And it won’t be written strictly.) In the first few years of the agricultural amnesty, internal Immigration and Naturalization Service statistics showed that 888,637 legalization applications were fraudulent. According to immigration agents, “farm workers” stated in their interviews that cotton was purple or that they had pulled cherries from the ground. Of the 888,637 fraudulent applications, guess how many our government approved. Answer: More than 800,000. The agricultural amnesty was so carefully administered that not one, but TWO of the 1993 World Trade Center bombers were in this country because of it. (More on that in another column.) The main problem with the farm worker amnesty, the DACA amnesty or any amnesty is that everyone involved in the entire immigration apparatus is feverishly working, on the taxpayer’s dime, to transform this country into a Third World hellhole. Lawyers for La Raza and lawyers for the government both believe it is their mission to humiliate and destroy white Christian America. (Actually, this country is “biracial Christian America,” plus a few Amerindians and anyone else who assimilated to Western European culture.) There are multitudes of them, and they will never, ever stop. Congress could pass a law granting amnesty to any 7-foot-tall, left-handed, red-headed illegal aliens from Lichtenstein — and hundreds of left-wing outfits would instantly set to work, demanding amnesty for witch doctors, cannibals, pederasts, terrorists and the rest of the multicultural universe that makes America so vibrant. On the other side of the application process would be government immigration bureaucrats who either used to work at La Raza, or hope to in the future. On the off chance that some particularly risible amnesty application is denied by a stodgy rules-follower in our immigration bureaucracy, that denial will be litigated before a federal judge in Hawaii, then appealed to the Ninth Circuit. For two decades after the 1986 amnesty, the federal courts were tied up with dozens of class-action lawsuits brought on behalf of illegal aliens — regular illegal aliens, farm worker illegal aliens and still-in-Mexico illegal aliens — challenging every aspect of the law. Is that how American tax dollars should be spent? On endless litigation, brought by America-hating activists on behalf of people who have no right to be in our country and decided by Democrat-appointed judges? (Who are also America-hating activists.) And when their work is done, there will be a lot more Democrat-appointed judges because there will be a lot more Democrats. Lawyers sued over everything — the absence of Creole interpreters, the requirement that illegals have proof of prior farm work and the rare denials of amnesty. Congress desperately tried passing laws that would prevent courts from hearing these cases — all to no avail. Left-wing lawyers just had to pick the right judge, and they won. In 2005 — nearly 20 years after the 1986 amnesty — the Ninth Circuit was still granting amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens who claimed they had been unfairly denied because they were not in the country for the first amnesty. Seriously. No matter how the law is written, as long as anyone is eligible for amnesty, everybody’s getting amnesty. President Trump is the last president who will ever have a chance to make the right decision on immigration. After this, it’s over. The boat will have sailed. If he succeeds, all the p@ssy-grabbing and Russia nonsense will burn off like a morning fog. He will be the president who saved the American nation, its character, its sovereignty, its core identity. But if he fails, Donald Trump will go down in history as the man who killed America.)

For this young architect, the answer could be yes – RAFAEL ROBLES  (DIERSEN: Were your career dreams deferred?  If so, when?  In 1969, when I was 20 years old, my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me to resign saying I would not be available to work enough part-time hours. I was available to work Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, holidays, and every day that NIU was not in session. In 1971, Oldsmobile withdrew a job offer that I had accepted saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. After 1974, my Democrat IRS superiors made it clear that they would not promote me any more. In 1980, my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO. My Democrat GAO superiors kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO. After 1986, my Democrat GAO superiors made it clear that they would not promote any more. My Democrat GAO superiors always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes. In 1997, my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to take their early retirement “offer.”)

DAILY CALLER
— Rahm Emmanuel’s Dream Of A ‘Trump-Free Chicago’ Isn’t Going To Happen – Anders Hagstrom  (DIERSEN: Constructively, Emmanuel and Chicago have declared war on America.)
http://dailycaller.com/2017/09/07/rahm-emmanuels-dream-of-a-trump-free-chicago-isnt-going-to-happen/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner rejected Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel’s call for a bill of rights for immigrants Wednesday, claiming that only Congress could pass such a law. Emmanuel called for the bill of rights after declaring Chicago a “Trump-free zone” Tuesday in response to President Donald Trump’s announcement that he was ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the Chicago Tribune reported. While Rauner denied Emmanuel’s request, the governor was not opposed to further protections for illegal immigrants. Instead, he called on Congress to take action. “I do not believe this challenge for these children can be addressed on a state-by-state basis,” Rauner said. “I think that would not be correct, would not be the right solution. We need a comprehensive immigration reform. It should be done on the federal level for the entire nation, and it should be done by Congress.” Rauner signed legislation to make Illinois a “sanctuary state” last week, preventing law enforcement from arresting illegal immigrants based solely on their immigration status. But after the Trump administration’s DACA repeal announcement, Emmanuel wasn’t satisfied. The mayor filed a resolution with the Chicago City Council Wednesday, calling on Rauner to adopt a bill of rights for “Dreamers.” He made the announcement at Solorio Academy High School, where more than one third of the students are illegal immigrants. “Chicago, our schools, our neighborhoods, our city, as it relates to what President Trump said, will be a Trump-free zone. You have nothing to worry about,” Emanuel said while visiting the high school. “And I want you to know this, and I want your families to know this. And rest assured, I want you to come to school … and pursue your dreams.”)
— AP Refers To Illegal Immigrants As ‘Undocumented Citizens’ – Amber Athey  (DIERSEN: AP should refer to illegals as undocumented Democrats because Democrats shout at illegals that Republicans are White supremacists, Nazis, KKK members, haters, racists, sexists, bigots, and even worse things.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Trump administration has halted an Obama-era rule requiring large companies to share data with the government about how they pay employees by race and gender – but human resources experts and advocates for equal pay say it’s unlikely to slow the push toward pay transparency employees, shareholders and local governments have demanded in recent years. Increasingly, employees are turning to popular websites like Glassdoor or Payscale to compare their salary data and expecting companies to publicly say they pay men and women equally. Shareholders have pushed technology and financial services companies to release their gender pay gap statistics. More state and local governments have passed pay equity laws, some of which require state contractors to report data or certify they pay men and women the same.)

— What did you do 17 years ago today? I attended the Bush/Cheney rally before the start of Naperville’s Labor Day parade and walked with Bush and Cheney in the parade.  I was one of those who rode a Bush/Cheney bus from the end of the parade to attend the Cheney rally at the Taste of Polonia festival. Earlier that year, I asked Governor George Ryan and Senate President Pate Philip to invite Bush to walk in Wheaton’s 2000 Independence Day Parade. – Dave Diersen

I did. Earlier that year, I asked Governor George Ryan and Senate President Pate Philip to invite Bush to walk in Wheaton’s 2000 Independence Day Parade.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: As a presidential candidate, then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush marched in the Last Fling’s Labor Day Parade in 2000 after holding a rally at Naperville North High School. It was on the rally stage before the speech when the candidate, who was oblivious the microphones were live, pointed out a veteran political reporter to his running mate Dick Cheney and said, “There’s Adam Clymer, major-league a—— from The New York Times.”)

In 1971, when I was 22, Oldsmobile withdrew a job offer that I had accepted saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. Democrats use Affirmative Action (AA), Diversity, and Inclusion to not hire and to get rid of their employees who are Republican, and especially those who are White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.  To help them meet their AA, Diversity, and Inclusion quotas, goals, and targets, my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.  My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. The 14th annual State of Obesity report from the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation determined in part that “obesity is a national security issue.” “Being overweight or obese is the leading cause of medical disqualifications, with nearly one-quarter of [military] service applicants rejected for exceeding the weight or body fat standards,” the report’s authors found.)

(FROM THE EDITORIAL: “THE RIGHT to vote is foundational for the rights of Americans in our democracy.” It was refreshing to hear that fundamental fact about the importance of voting to American democracy given full voice by a Republican officeholder. Even better was that Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s words were accompanied by his signature last Monday on a bill that will remove obstacles to balloting by allowing automatic voter registration. In not going along with the general aversion of his party to making voting easier, Mr. Rauner sets an example that other states should follow. Illinois became the 10th state, along with the District, to move to modernize its system of voter registration through automatic registration.)

with little meaningful oversight – Mark Schoeff Jr. and Bruce Kelly (DIERSEN: I have been a Finra arbitrator since 1998. I worked for GAO for almost 9 years on audits that involved Finra.)
http://www.investmentnews.com/article/20170902/FEATURE/170909996/finra-whos-watching-the-watchdog
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If you’re a broker, there are three things in life that are certain: death, taxes – and answering to Finra. Finra is the self-regulatory organization that makes sure the nation’s 3,700 broker-dealers and 631,000 brokers comply with securities laws and regulations to ensure that investors are protected and treated fairly. It has the power to levy fines and, in serious cases, bar brokers and individuals from the industry. If you want to be a broker or operate a brokerage firm, you must join Finra. No one argues against the need for regulation, but over the years the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Inc. has grown into a huge institution, one that generates hundreds of millions of dollars a year in revenue through membership fees and fines. It also maintains a reserve of about $1.6 billion and employs upward of 3,000 people, some of whom receive exorbitant salaries by industry standards. Finra wields enormous power over the lives of brokers and broker-dealers. Last year alone, it issued more than 1,400 disciplinary actions and barred more than 500 brokers from the industry. And yet people in the industry know little about how Finra operates, how it spends the millions it collects in membership fees and fines, and how it sets its regulatory agenda. Finra writes its own rules, meets behind closed doors and releases information if and when it deems necessary. Finra is the watchdog that no one is watching. “It is largely unaccountable to the industry or to the public,” David Burton, a senior fellow in economic policy at the Heritage Foundation, wrote in a February report. “Due process, transparency and regulatory-review protections normally associated with regulators are not present, and its arbitration process is flawed. Reforms are necessary.”)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— OUTSTANDING: TWO IL GOP LAWMAKERS (John Cabello and David McSweeney) FILE EFFORT TO REPEAL SANCTUARY LAW
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/08/two-il-gop-lawmakers-file-effort-to-repeal-sanctuary-law.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE:  Two Illinois Republican state reps are very concerned about the immigration law enforcement measure Illinois Republican Governor Bruce Rauner signed into law Monday. State Reps. John Cabello (R-Rockford) and David McSweeney (R-Barrington) filed a measure Wednesday that would repeal a new law banning law enforcement in Illinois from stopping persons suspected of being in the U.S. illegally. “I swore to uphold the U.S. and Illinois Constitutions when I became a legislator,” Cabello told Illinois Review Wednesday. “As a member of law enforcement, I took a vow to uphold the law. I believe and trust in those oaths, and intend to do all I can to keep them.” The law many are referring to as the “sanctuary law” says law enforcement “shall not” detain or continue to detain any individual solely on the basis of any immigration detainer or non-judicial immigration warrant. Law enforcement “shall not” stop or arrest anyone solely based on the person’s immigration or citizenship status. They are, however, not banned from implementing a “valid” judge-issued federal warrant concerning any suspects. That is the definition of a sanctuary law, Cabello bill co-sponsor David McSweeney told Illinois Review. He pointed to Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ office comments on the law. “As the Attorney General has said, when cities and states refuse to help enforce immigration laws, our nation is less safe,” DOG spokesman Devin O’Malley told Fox News. “Failure to deport aliens who are convicted for criminal offenses puts whole communities at risk – especially immigrant communities in the very sanctuary jurisdictions that seek to protect the perpetrators.” The attorney general’s views were totally disregarded in a missive sent out by the Illinois Republican Party chairman Tim Schneider and County Chairman Association President Randy Pollard Monday night after Rauner signed the bill into law in front of an enthusiastic Latino audience in Chicago. “I think it is important that people know what Attorney General Sessions thinks about SB 31. Tim Schneider, the chief cheerleader for the ‘Capitol Compromise’ massive tax hike is now presenting more ‘alternative facts,'” McSweeney said. Cabello said lawmakers are supposed to do what’s best for those that are bearing the financial burden for decisions they make at the capitol. Not doing so will ultimately create consequences that political parties may not want, such as the base simply staying home in 2018. “People are telling me they’re so fed up with the party leaders and the governor that they’re just not going to go to the polls in 2018. That’s the opposite of what they should do,” Cabello, who co-chaired the Trump campaign in Illinois, said. “They need their voices to be heard loud and clear. Staying home is not an option.” Only one Republican House member – Bob Pritchard – voted in support of SB 31 on the House floor. Four Republicans – McConchie, McConnaughay, Nybo and Radogno – supported it in the Illinois Senate. Cabello and McSweeney’s repeal bill is HB 4091.)

http://www.russstewart.com/articles/2017/08-30-2017.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Tokenism, as an adjective defined by Webster’s Dictionary, is an act merely simulated, of slight or no account. As a noun, it is an act of accommodation to a demand by slight and merely formal concessions. For Democrats in Cook County, August’s slatemaking for their 2018 ticket was both a noun and an adjective, particularly regarding white men. Of the 16 candidates endorsed by the party for countywide offices, including judges, a grand total of three are while males, or about 18 percent. In the Democratic Party, men have hit the proverbial “glass ceiling.” Having a white man on the ticket is now of slight or no account. Of the remaining 13, seven are black, of which four are black women. That’s 44 percent. Seven are women. That’s another 44 percent. And two are Hispanics. That’s just 12 percent. As a noun, every key Democratic constituency got more than token accommodation. White males are no longer a key constituency. As expected, the Big Three – County Board president Toni Preckwinkle, House Speaker and state Democratic chairman Mike Madigan, and Alderman Ed Burke (14th) – did the dictating, with Burke picking the judges, and the 50 city and 30 suburban committeemen did the capitulating. Preckwinkle is expanding her empire exponentially, and is at the top of the heap. In the 2016 cycle, Preckwinkle engineered the slating of her county aide, Kim Foxx, for state’s attorney. She easily beat incumbent Anita Alvarez in the primary. She also worked with Madigan, dispatching another aide, Juliana Stratton, to run against independent-minded Ken Dunkin, who had the temerity to defy Madigan on several Illinois House votes. With a flood of Madigan money, Stratton buried Dunkin, and Madigan got another ally in Springfield. Now Preckwinkle and Madigan have worked again, plunking Stratton on J.B. Pritzker’s ticket for lieutenant governor in the March 2018 primary, and then delivering an endorsement of Pritzker for governor. Crafting a Pritzker-Stratton ticket sealed the deal, and Preckwinkle delivered all the black committeemen at slatemaking. And finally, another former Preckwinkle aide, Kim du Buclet, now a state representative, got slated for the 2-year Metropolitan Water Reclamation District term, beating a Hispanic backed by state Representative Luis Arroyo (D-3), and a longtime insider and donor associated with the North Shore Realtors. In the slating for county clerk, a job David Orr is relinquishing after 28 years, Recorder Karen Yarbrough, who is black and a Madigan protege, was slated. For Preckwinkle, despite the soda tax snafu, it’s “Veni, vidi, vici” – “I came, I saw, I conquered.”)

— Several Rauner Staffers Hired Only Weeks Ago Fired, Quit – Mary Ann Ahern (FROM THE ARTICLE: Some speculate that perhaps some of the former Illinois Policy Institute staffers left on their own, upset that Rauner plans to sign an Immigration bill on Monday that conservatives oppose.)
http://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/Rauner-Fires-Staffers-Hired-Only-Weeks-Ago-Sources-441583733.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner fired several key staffers Wednesday night who were hired only six weeks ago, multiple sources tell NBC 5. The shakeup comes after a lingering controversy over a political cartoon from the Illinois Policy Institute, the right wing think tank Rauner has turned to in his staffer overhaul. Some reports say Rauner’s chief of staff, Kristina Rasmussen, may be out, but are still not confirmed. Sources tell NBC 5 perhaps Rauner’s entire communications team and his general counsel are all out. Sources confirmed Michael Lucci, Rauner’s deputy chief of staff for policy, Diana Rickert, Laurel Patric and Britany Carl, who once compared abortion to Nazi eugenics in a controversial blog post, were all out. Lucci, Rickert, Carl were fired, sources said, while Patrick resigned. It’s believed Rickert wrote the vexing “white male” press release from Tuesday and Patrick sent it out. Former staffers say Rasmussen would have signed off on it. Attempts to reach the Rauner team have been unsuccessful. Whether all were fired or quit is not clear. Rasmussen and several other staffers came to the governor’s office from the Illinois Policy Institute. Rauner had been out of town for several days this week, taking his daughter to college, and the staff released a press release on the cartoon many lawmakers labelled racist. Among the comments from the Rauner team was “as a white male” he would no longer comment on the controversy. Rauner later released another statement saying the previous one “did not accurately reflect my views.” Some speculate that perhaps some of the former Illinois Policy Institute staffers left on their own, upset that Rauner plans to sign an Immigration bill on Monday that conservatives oppose.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Rauner ousts new communications team after ‘white male’ flap – Tina Sfondeles  (FROM THE ARTICLE: A spokeswoman for the lieutenant governor’s office offered no comment on the resignations but said that she would be assisting with media calls.)
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/sources-rauner-ousts-new-communications-team-after-white-male-flap/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A day after crafting a controversial statement citing Gov. Bruce Rauner’s position as a “white male,” the governor’s new communications staff has been ousted — with more exits on the way, according to multiple sources. Sources said the staffers — hired in July after a staff purge and series of protest resignations — were asked to resign; one was asked to stay but chose to resign. Sources say that includes former Illinois Policy Institute staffer Diana Rickert, who served as the governor’s deputy chief of staff for communications; Laurel Patrick, communications director; and Brittany Carl and Meghan Keenan, both communications specialists. And multiple sources said exits of high-level staffers are also on the way. A spokeswoman for the lieutenant governor’s office offered no comment on the resignations but said that she would be assisting with media calls. Late Tuesday night, Rauner scrambled to undo the damage from a statement his newly revamped communications office issued earlier in the day, with Patrick writing that the governor would not offer an opinion on a cartoon some deemed racist — because he is “a white male.” The story was picked up on national wires, which undeniably painted the governor in a negative light. Hours later, Rauner released a statement saying the comment “did not accurately reflect” his views. “I can understand why some people found the cartoon offensive. And I believe we should do more as a society and a nation to bring us together, rather than divide us,” the governor said in the statement. The communication staffers’ exits mark a cap to a dizzying spell of public flaps for the governor since he directed a staff takeover in mid-July — including the firing of his “body man” on his first day for sexist and racially insensitive tweets; criticism over the right leanings of his high-level staffers; a clarification by email of his comments on Charlottesville and a highly criticized national interview on Fox News. Carl, too, came under fire when an online post revealed she argued that abortion is being used “to rid the world of disabled and other “unwanted’ persons” — comparing it to Nazi Germany. The negative headlines come as Rauner is seeking re-election — and he is considered a vulnerable Republican governor, despite the vast wealth he has to support his campaign. In a critical blow to his campaign, Mike Zolnierowicz resigned as Rauner’s top political lieutenant in July. News of the exits spread throughout the political realm on Wednesday night. One senior Republican operative called the ousting a sign the governor has realized he made a “mistake.” “The governor and First Lady have finally admitted they made a colossal mistake in hiring these right wing ideologues,” the operative said. “One can only hope for the sake of our state government they will make better choices in the future.” The Rauner administration shakeup began on July 10 when Rauner unexpectedly fired his chief of staff, Richard Goldberg. Goldberg was swiftly replaced by Kristina Rasmussen, former president and CEO of the Illinois Policy Institute. That sparked the exits of at least 20 employees, many of whom left because they didn’t believe in the direction the governor was taking in hiring members of the conservative think tank. The shift came after Rauner vetoed a state budget that included an income-tax hike, only to see his veto overridden with the help of several Republicans. The governor has defended his hires. In July, Rauner said he was working to assemble “the best team in America.” He also declared “change happens” and described criticism of his staff shakeup as “political spin baloney.” “I am always looking for the most talented team I can possibly have, the most talented people who will serve the best interests of all the people of Illinois,” Rauner said in downstate Auburn on July 21. The governor said the transitions were “just part of a process.” The governor continues to be fielded with questions about whether the hiring of Illinois Policy Institute staffers to high-level positions, such as his chief of staff and policy head, meant a signal to the right. He has denied the shift, saying he calls the shots. Multiple emails sent to Patrick went unanswered on Wednesday. The Sun-Times last received a response from Patrick on Tuesday night. Questions about the controversial statement went unanswered. And emails sent Wednesday night to Patrick were returned with an automatic reply — directing media inquiries to two other state employees. Calls made to Rickert, Patrick and Rasmussen were not returned Wednesday night. The cartoon by the conservative think tank depicted a black child in a Cubs cap begging for money for school from a wealthy white man. The cigar-smoking man was showing one pocket empty and the other stuffed with tax-increment financing money. Legislators decried the cartoon as racist on the Illinois House floor last week, and the think tank later removed it from the institute’s website.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Rauner ejects new communications team after ‘white male’ storm – GREG HINZ
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170824/BLOGS02/170829945/illinois-gov-rauner-ousts-new-communications-team
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Barely a month after firing his chief of staff and communications aides, Gov. Bruce Rauner appears to be in the process of doing the same thing again. Numerous Springfield sources say the new team Rauner brought in last month—most of them from the libertarian Illinois Policy Institute—are heading for the exits after an embarrassing situation this week in which Rauner retracted a statement put out via staff saying he couldn’t comment on an allegedly racist cartoon posted by the Institute because he was a “white male.” Rauner spokeswoman Laurel Patrick did not answer calls and her email was automatically directed to other officials who did not respond. But among those reportedly on the hit list are chief of staff Kristina Rasmussen, who insiders say authorized the “white male” statement, and communications director Diana Rickert. Word of the second shakeup became instant political fodder for Democratic gubernatorial hopeful J.B. Pritzker. “In a move straight out of the Trump playbook, Bruce Rauner has reportedly fired his communications team, who were just 37 days on the job,” the Pritzker campaign said in a statement. “There is a problem that no amount of staff changes can fix, and his name is Bruce Rauner.” If the turnover is as widespread as it appears—and as of this writing, the administration has yet to confirm these actions or describe their extent—the changes will throw Rauner’s re-election effort into chaos. One top Republican operative had a three-letter response when I emailed him about the matter last night: “WTF.” All of this occurs as Rauner is attempting to hold Republican votes and sustain his veto of a school funding bill that top Democrats dearly would like to override. Expect lots more fallout today.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Rauner blames press team for ‘white male’ statement, says aides weren’t ‘good fit’ – Rick Pearson, Monique Garcia and Kim Geiger
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-staff-shakeup-met-0825-20170824-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner held a conference call with staff members Thursday morning to announce the departure of his new communications team, saying they were “good people trying to do good work” but ended up being not a “good fit.” According to one person who was on the call but who was not authorized to speak publicly about it, Rauner told aides “the intensity of the battle is going up” and he wanted to address the staffing rumors because he expected them to continue, the source said. “The reality is in addition to the enemies on the other side of the aisle (Democrats), we have enemies in the media and enemies who should be on our side, some of them former members of the administration,” the source recounted Rauner as saying. Rauner said talk of departures by his chief staff, Kristina Rasmussen, and chief legal counsel Dennis Murashko were just “rumors.” The source said Rasmussen also was on the call and told staff she “couldn’t wait to see all of their smiling faces.” Rasmussen, policy chief Michael Lucci and most of the communications team joined the Rauner administration last month from the Illinois Policy Institute, a think tank with a free-market message that aligns with the governor’s worldview and has spent years developing a public relations infrastructure via newspapers, radio and the internet. Rauner confirmed the communications team shakeup in a statement released Thursday. “Diana Rickert, Laurel Patrick, Meghan Keenan and Brittany Carl have submitted their resignations to the Office of the Governor,” a statement said. “We are grateful for their hard work on behalf of the people of Illinois and wish them all the best going forward.” Rickert, Keenan and Carl are alumni of the Policy Institute. Patrick previously had worked for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. Later, during a morning appearance in Naperville to sign legislation regarding pensions, Rauner said the departures were “by mutual agreement.” He also said the communications team’s departure was “all the changes there are.” The departures come as Rauner is trying to move past the issue of a controversial political cartoon posted by the Policy Institute and clean up a statement his relatively new communications office sent out. The background: The cartoon showed an African-American child panhandling for money from a suit-wearing white man with a cigar in a commentary on Chicago’s use of tax increment financing districts and school funding. Lawmakers from both political parties said the cartoon was offensive, and the organization took it down. Rauner had tried to avoid the issue, saying he hadn’t seen the drawing. Rauner’s administration put out an initial statement Tuesday noting the cartoon was removed. “And the governor — as a white male — does not have anything more to add to the discussion,” the statement read. Rauner sent out a new statement Tuesday evening, though the governor stopped short of saying he found the cartoon offensive himself. “Earlier today an email went out from my office that did not accurately reflect my views. I can understand why some people found the cartoon offensive. And I believe we should do more as a society and a nation to bring us together, rather than divide us,” the statement read in part. “It is not my place to comment on every cartoon or picture that comes from people outside the governor’s office or to tell people how they should feel.” On Thursday, the governor put the blame for the controversial statement about the cartoon on his former communications team, saying he did not “have knowledge” of the statement before it went out and it was not approved by him or his chief of staff. Rauner said it was drafted by Rickert, and sent out by Patrick. Rauner declined to say if he believed the cartoon was racist, repeatedly saying “I understand why some people are upset by it.” “My job is not to comment on every cartoon, every political statement that comes from outside our administration, and I will not do that. What I will do is fight every day for justice, fairness, equality,” Rauner said. Asked by reporters about the Illinois Policy Institute’s involvement in his administration, Rauner downplayed the influence. “A very tiny fraction of our administration is from that organization, and they in no regard, in no regard, does that organization speak for me or my administration, and I do not lean on them for any particular issue or policy,” Rauner said. The think tank was aligned with many of Rauner’s goals and he had given it more than a half-million dollars before becoming governor. The Rauner administration turmoil started last month when he dumped his chief of staff Richard Goldberg after lawmakers overrode the governor’s veto of a state budget and tax hike package as some Republicans broke ranks and joined Democrats. That went a long way toward ending a two year budget stalemate and decreased Rauner’s leverage to win his economic agenda Democrats oppose. Rauner decision to part ways with Golberg led to a big wave of departures that rid his administration of what was left of the mainstream Republican operatives the governor had borrowed from former U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk in winning the governor’s office in 2014.)

— Pritzker’s people pounced: “In a move straight out of the Trump playbook, Bruce Rauner has reportedly fired his communications team who were just 37 days on the job. The rash move comes after the failed governor had to publicly rebuke his own staff yesterday after they said “as a white male — [Rauner] does not have anything more to add to the discussion” on the racist IPI cartoon. “There is a problem that no amount of staff changes can fix and his name is Bruce Rauner,” said Pritzker communications director Galia Slayen. “This governor has no moral compass, no vision, and no loyalty. (FROM THE ARTICLE: LGBTQ rights activists say two pieces of legislation should be signed by the governor. Both passed the General Assembly unanimously. One would ban the “panic defense” in the murders of LGBTQ people. Another would allow transgender individuals to change their birth certificates without the necessity of sexual reassignment surgery. Mike Ziri is the director of public policy for Equality Illinois. He says not every transgender person can afford the surgery, or even desires it, “We’re hopeful the governor will sign this and continue our proud tradition of LGBTQ civil rights in Illinois.” The deadline for the governor to act is next week. The governor did recently sign a measure the organization supports. Equality Illinois is celebrating the passage of what’s been called the “LGBTQ Public Service Bill.” The idea is that it will encourage people in that community to be better represented on boards and commissions under the Governor’s Office. Those who apply will have the option to acknowledge their sexuality and gender identity on application forms. ”That helps when it comes time to advancing policies that are inclusive, affirmative and fair and representative of the diversity of the great state of Illinois,” says Ziri. In a press release from Equality Illinois the organization also explains the new law by saying it, “Adds the new data about sexual orientation and gender identity to an existing annual report to the General Assembly of the demographic data of individuals who apply for boards and commissions and for those who are appointed.” It takes effect January 1, 2018.)
