Yes, sharing the chairmanship shows Rauner’s weakness, since he has almost single-handedly funded the party. This never could have happened under Rauner two years ago. And yes, Shaw lost his chance at potentially knocking out Goliath. And it will remain to be seen how real Shaw’s role will be. For now, what’s important is this is a much-needed move for a Republican party trying to get itself back on track. Rauner desperately needed some declaration of unity after months of high-profile post-primary sparring with his opponent Jeanne Ives and the realization Republican Sam McCann is running as a third party candidate. The governor can now move on to the next fire.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: I strongly suspect one big reason that neither Sean Morrison nor Tim Schneider lifts a finger for President Trump is they look at polls saying Trump is unpopular in Cook County and they fear standing-up for the President would hurt their prospects of keeping their cushy County Board positions. In my opinion they have a serious conflict of interest. In any case, it’s at least a reasonable question they should have to address. But on one point there can be no disagreement. Donald Trump is the best thing the GOP has going for it. It’s not even close. Trump is where all the energy is and he’s pretty much the only Republican who is getting things done, anywhere. Trump is also making politics fun again and is bringing in new people like never before. It’s a shame we are burdened with so many Republican officials in Illinois who will never get it, but the fact is President Trump has completely changed the game, on multiple levels. As just one example there is a major paradigm shift going on in the black community where black folks who never, ever would have considered supporting a Republican president are supporting this one. Kanye West is just one high profile example.)

Rauner spent part of his Saturday at an invitation-only roundtable at the McHenry County GOP’s Crystal Lake headquarters – an event featuring a Who’s Who of party insiders, including: McHenry County Sheriff Bill Prim, McHenry County State’s Attorney Patrick Kenneally and McHenry County Board Member Jim Kearns. But State Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, took issue with someone else in attendance at the Saturday meet-up: McHenry County’s new chairwoman, Diane Evertsen, who at one time served as president of the Minutemen Midwest – an organization the Southern Poverty Law Center designated a “nativist extremist” group. “The governor should apologize for meeting with a known extremist,” said McSweeney, who heard about the meeting after it happened. McSweeney pointed to Evertsen’s association with Minutemen Midwest, which the SPLC named several times on its annual list of nativist extremist groups between 2007 and 2010. The Alabama-based civil rights nonprofit defines nativist extremist groups as organizations that go beyond mere advocacy to personally confront suspected undocumented immigrants or those who hire or help them. McSweeney said a simple Google search reveals the views of the group Evertsen chaired. The legislator characterized those views as “disgraceful.” Minutemen Midwest had a website – www.minutemenmidwest.com – but it has been taken down since its launch. While the site is dead, some of the material published there is recoverable with the internet archive known as the “Wayback Machine,” McSweeney said. McSweeney highlighted an article published on the website written by William H. Calhoun titled “Illegal Immigration: Third-World Invasion” – a piece suggesting the U.S. is under threat by immigrants of different “blood.” “Invaders from the Orient, Asia, Africa, Central and South America are invading the first world, and they are intent only upon conquest,” the article said. “With the exception of a very small upper class of pure European blood, most Mexicans are either Amerindian or Mestizo (mostly Amerindian with a few drops of Spaniard or African blood). They are not Western; genealogically they are Asiatic; and they despise the West.” The article appalled McSweeney, he said. “It’s probably the most extreme article that I’ve read in a long time,” McSweeney said. “It’s disgusting.” Evertsen, a 73-year-old Harvard grandmother who once served on the McHenry County Board and now serves on McHenry County College’s board of trustees, could not be reached for comment. But she doesn’t necessarily expect him to win. “I’m a republican. If we go to the progressive income tax, you can watch that you’ll have far more out migration…that is my prediction this year…because of that 32 percent tax increase,” Ives said. So she predicts this will be an interesting time for Illinois. Meanwhile, conservative and moderate republicans may clash over the future of the Illinois GOP as well. Governor Rauner is supporting Illinois GOP chairman Tim Schneider, a Cook County Commissioner, to continue in his role. “We have a very important vote coming up on May 19 as to who is going to be the leader of Illinois GOP. And obviously Governor Rauner has put forward Tim Schneider and many of us conservatives want an alternative to Mr. Schneider and so you have this inter-party feud going on,” she said. Ives said conservatives support Mark Shaw of Lake County over incumbent chairman Tim Scheider, and allies of the Governor are exerting pressure on GOP committeemen. She said the struggle continues.)

So when it came to expanding NASA for the Apollo program, “they typically hired a bunch of new college graduates.” He added that it was not uncommon to see 30 to 35 year olds leading important branches of the agency during the 1960’s. “That same job today is usually filled by somebody who’s 50 years old, because they’ve been on the job a lot longer,” said Launius. “That’s just the nature of the aging of the workforce, I would contend, altogether.” And although there are plenty of people who go to work for NASA today, there aren’t as many opportunities for young professionals. “You’ve got people who are in the workforce already and NASA’s not expanding,” he explained. Young engineers and scientists see adventure in the innovative work being done by the private aerospace sector, and many of the people who would have gone to work for NASA during the Apollo era — “Going to the moon was a cool thing to do,” the historian reasoned — are today finding themselves at companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin. Last Wednesday, April 18, each of the 102 counties in Illinois held a Republican county convention. Every two years this is where the county GOP chair and other county party officers are picked. And every 4 years, this being one of those years, the county conventions are also the place where under the easily rigged system only the Illinois Republican Party uses, the 18 members of the state central committee (“SCC”) are picked. One member is selected from each of the state’s U.S. congressional districts. The SCC is the State GOP’s senior governing board and its members pick the state party chairman. The current state chair is Governor Rauner flunky, Tim Schneider of suburban Cook County.)
