Like the national GOP, Illinois Republicans have been split on how to move forward in the wake of Donald Trump’s presidency. “Individually we can be strong, but united we’re a force. I’m going to be pounding on that again and again,” he told Playbook. “It’s a huge challenge in some ways but that will be job No. 1.” The issue is playing out in Illinois and across the country as Republicans come to terms with how to deal with criticism of the former president. Illinois Congressman Adam Kinzinger, for example, has called for Trump’s impeachment; a point that has divided Republicans in the state as well as in Washington, D.C. Tracy doesn’t agree with Kinzinger’s views but doesn’t think he should be censured for them, either. “I support Ronald Reagan’s 80 percent rule,” Tracy said. “If someone agrees with you 80 percent of the time, they’re still your friend and ally. We need to build the party and expand the party and not excommunicate people because of a single or occasional political disagreement.” Tracy takes a similar view of the downstate vs. Chicago divide that has separated many lawmakers. It’s not geography that has created the divide, he says, but issues. His platform — at least so far, on day one: strong families, strong market economy, strong safety, efficient government and school choice. “They’re the core values of the Republican party. Whether you’re a farmer or union worker in southern Illinois or a soccer mom or executive in northern Illinois, they’re issues we can agree on.” Looking at 2022, Tracy says the goal will be to try to capture the U.S. Senate seat that’s up, the governor’s office and legislative seats that have left Republicans in minority positions. “We united as a party” to defeat the graduated income tax amendment, he said. “We fired on all cylinders. And that’s what we need to do for 2022.” (DIERSEN: Conservative-haters do not want me to ask questions. Democrats have been solely responsible for defending slavery, starting the Civil War, opposing reconstruction, lynching blacks, founding the Ku Klux Klan, Jim Crow laws and segregation, poll taxes and literacy tests. The Party voted against the 13th amendment (end slavery), 14th amendment (black citizenship), and 15th amendment (black right to vote), filibustered the 1960 Civil Rights Act (elimination of poll taxes), and tried to filibuster the 1964 Civil Rights Act for 60 days, the longest filibuster in Senate history. The Civil War wasn’t North v. South, as highlighted in the Lincoln-Douglas debates in the northern state of Illinois. It was a Democrat v. Republican battle. The infamous Dred Scott decision (blacks were property) in 1857 was a Supreme Court vote of 7 Democrat justices for, and 2 Republican justices against. By 1900, more than 20 black Republicans had served in Congress. Democrats did not elect a single black congressman until 1935. And every black senator until 1979 was a Republican. When federal troops withdrew from the South after reconstruction ended, Democrats’ white supremacy laws re-emerged with a vengeance enforced by the paramilitary arm of the Democratic Party, the KKK, which was used to suppress blacks from voting Republican. . .If Democrats really wanted to help blacks, they would treat abortion as a tragedy, support school choice, work to end the failed welfare state, drop the idea of defunding police, promote advancement based on merit and character not the amount of melanin in your skin, end open borders which flood the market with cheap labor and steal jobs from black Americans, end their support of minimum wage laws which lead to higher black unemployment, and end their social justice mantra which is equality by group not the individual, anathema to America’s founding principles. — The Illinois Republican Party is at an inflection point that’s gone beyond the urban vs. rural debate. Now the state party, like its national counterpart, must decide whether it’s in lockstep with former President Donald Trump and his loyal supporters or head down a path that’s more inclusive. The direction it takes will be determined in large part on Saturday, when the state Republican Central Committee selects its next chairman. Current leader Tim Schneider is stepping down after five years in the position. A critical litmus test in replacing Schneider may be the candidates’ views of Rep. Adam Kinzinger and his vote to support Trump’s impeachment. Do they want to censure the 16th District congressman, as some Republicans have called for? Or do they agree to disagree with him, as Schneider has done. Mark Shaw, the Lake County Republican Party chairman who represents the more conservative arm of the party, has talked about censure with Republicans but told Playbook he hasn’t yet decided to take a public stand on the issue. “I have not taken a position yet on whether U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger should be admonished by the Republican Party for his actions and/or comments,” he said in a text. He would not elaborate on his thoughts about Kinzinger’s vote. Shaw is supported by former congressional candidate Jim Oberweis and grassroots conservatives, and he’s also taken heat from pro-Trumpers like Catalina Lauf, centrist state Sen. Sue Rezin, and others. Lauf and Rezin have taken issue with Shaw for endorsing Oberweis in the IL-14 GOP primary weeks before petitions were filed. That Shaw would engineer a campaign in a contested primary to favor a white man over a respected female state senator (Rezin) and a pro-Trump Latina (Lauf) has infuriated many Republicans across the state. Rezin wrote a letter to party leaders in November complaining about Shaw’s actions. And Lauf tweeted over the weekend, saying, “We need a leader who will listen to those on the ground, committed to grassroots, and who can actually lead the GOP in this State on a path forward.” The other candidates applying for state GOP chair say they don’t support Kinzinger’s impeachment vote but they also don’t back censure. “I strongly disagree with Congressman Kinzinger’s vote…but I also oppose an Illinois GOP censure of him,” former Illinois Gaming Board exec Don Tracy told Playbook. Tracy is a downstate Republican who has support from grassroots conservatives as well as centrists.
