— The Rauner campaign has authorized me to report that Rauner will visit the Verdict Restaurant at Roosevelt Road and County Farm Road in Wheaton at 8:15 AM, tomorrow morning, Monday, October 29, 2018, as part of the campaign’s bus tour. Further, there will be a get out the vote rally for Rauner and the Republican ticket at Benedictine University in Lisle 5:30 to 7:00 PM, Monday evening, November 5, 2018. – Dave Diersen

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner showed up at the rally despite years of actively distancing himself from the controversial president — at least until recently when the governor sought to try to unify core social conservatives angry with his signature on laws expanding abortion, immigration and transgender rights. Trump made no mention of Rauner, who sat off to the side in bleachers far behind the main podium. Wearing a motorcycle vest and a baseball cap affirming the pro-police message “Back the Blue,” Rauner did not address the audience. While Rauner was Downstate, Democratic challenger J.B. Pritzker was campaigning in the west and northwest suburbs while adding $10 million to his own already record-shattering self-funding mark, bringing it to more than $171.5 million since he launched his campaign fund in March of last year. In a campaign fundraising email appeal for other Democratic candidates, Pritzker said Rauner’s attendance at the Trump rally was a “final desperate attempt to save his failing campaign.”)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Trump ignores Rauner at southern Illinois rally; praises Bost, Hultgren, Davis – Lynn Sweet (DIERSEN: According to this article, Roskam is “wooing voters who are turned off by Trump’s divisive politics and scorched rhetoric.” What do you say to those who advise Roskam to woo anti-Trumps by dumping Trump supporting Dave Diersen and his GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails? Since 2000, those advisors have blamed Diersen and his emails for all the losses that Republicans have suffered in Illinois.)
https://chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/trump-ignores-rauner-southern-illinois-rally-praises-bost-hultgren-davis/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, who must reclaim the GOP base to win re-election, showed up in the audience at President Donald Trump’s southern Illinois rally on Saturday, though Trump never mentioned the governor in his remarks nor invited him to the stage. If it was a deliberate snub, it was a remarkable rebuff — a Republican president ignoring a GOP governor who is struggling to win a second term against Democrat J.B. Pritzker. Or Rauner’s team may have said it’s OK to ignore him as he continues to try to have it both ways when it comes to Trump. While avoiding Rauner, Trump did give a big boost to three of the four Republican Illinois House members facing tough re-election races: Reps. Mike Bost, Rodney Davis and, in a big surprise, Randy Hultgren. Hultgren traveled more than 300 miles from his Chicago area district to Murphysboro to plant his flag with the president in the unannounced appearance. I heard that Rauner’s team was trying to arrange a last minute private meeting with Trump, a move calculated to try to appease the GOP base he has alienated so much that he barely won re-nomination in the March Illinois GOP primary. I’m not sure that private meeting ever took place. I did see Rauner pictured in the crowd standing next to Republican National Committee Finance Chair Todd Ricketts, who did visit with Trump at the rally. It’s hard to see how this fence straddling will work well for Rauner. While he avoided being caught in the same camera frame as Trump — which would depress his support among the independents and moderate Republicans he needs — he still was not embraced by Trump. Trump is very popular with the segments of the Republican base Rauner knows he needs. Rauner on Saturday was trying to catch a ride on Trump’s coat tails without paying much of a price. The rally was billed as a boost for Bost. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill., in a fight with Democratic nominee Seat Casten in the 6th district, was the only one of the four GOP targets who did not attend the Trump rally, which made sense since his re-election depends on wooing voters who are turned off by Trump’s divisive politics and scorched rhetoric. Hultgren is in a tight race with Democratic nominee Lauren Underwood in the 14th congressional district, in prior years safe GOP turf. Hultgren needs Trump’s help to turn out Republicans who otherwise sit out mid-terms. Hultgren may have decided to journey to Murphysboro, near Carbondale, because former Vice President Joe Biden headlines a rally for Underwood on Wednesday at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles, where blues singer Keb’ Mo’ will also perform. “We need your vote,” Hultgren said to the crowd, though he was hundreds of miles away from his voters. Bost is facing a strong challenge for the 12th district seat from Democrat Brendan Kelly, the St. Clair County State’s Attorney. Davis is running against Democrat contender BetsyDirksen Londrigan in the 13th district, anchored in central Illinois.)

Or are they apathetic — so unconcerned that they can’t be bothered to purchase stamps to send in their absentee ballots? The two characterizations of young Americans are in conflict, observed Melissa Hagan, an assistant professor of psychology at San Francisco State University. Her research has led her to believe that neither captures what’s going on in the minds of young people. Their intense reaction to political events runs contrary to the charge of apathy, she said, while the emotional trauma they report should not be dismissed as hypersensitivity. With a team of researchers, she surveyed 769 introductory psychology students at Arizona State University in January and February 2017, asking about their satisfaction with the 2016 election, whether they were upset about the outcome and whether the results of the race had affected their close relationships.)

— Ignore that half-million dollars: Republican Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti was on Quad Cities radio on Thursday to promote Gov. Rauner and told listeners the campaign doesn’t rely on polls. “We never relied on polls four years ago. We’re not relying upon polls now,” Sanguinetti said on WOC-AM in Davenport, Iowa, when asked about surveys showing the Rauner ticket trailing Democrat J.B. Pritzker by double digits. “Yeah, we do have internals that say something different. But so what? Right now we’re getting out there, we’re communicating with the people in all our counties,” she said. Team Rauner has spent $537,704 on polling since April 2017, including $143,000 from July through September of this year, state campaign records show. October 12 Evening Edition

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Trump looms large as Rep. Peter Roskam fights for his political life against Sean Casten – Patrick M. O’Connell, Mike Riopell (DIERSEN: This article includes a report on what Roskam said and on what others said concerning Roskam at the Milton Township Republican Central Committee’s (MTRCC) outstanding meeting Wednesday evening, October 10, 2018, at the Wheaton Bowl Banquet Hall. 15 candidates were at the meeting – 1 for a federal office: Peter Roskam; 5 for state offices: Peter Breen, Mike Connelly, Amy Grant, Jay Kinzler, and Seth Lewis; eight for county offices: Grant Eckhoff, Gwen Henry, Paul Hinds, Jeff MacKay, Kevin Wiley, Karen Wilson, Chris Zaruba, and Jim Zay; and 1 for a municipal office: Suzanne Fitch. State Representative Jeanne Ives announced that she is circulating petitions for Wheaton mayoral candidate Phil Suess. Other meeting attendees included Ron Almiron, Roger Bohn, Lori Carlson, Joe Caruso, Bob Cherry, Jeff Cooper, Lynn Crane, Flo Dangelo, Tim Elliott (DuPage County Board), Sal Falbo (Milton Township Trustee), Mike Formento, Hide Holan, Babette Holder, Marty Keller (MTRCC Vice Chairman), Bob Krzyzewski, Larry LaVanway, Alex LeVan, Chris LeVan (MTRCC Chairman and Milton Township Assessor), Carl Lofgren, Paula McGowen (DuPage County Regional School Board Member), Bobby McNeily, Ron Menna, Dave Molitor (Milton Township Trustee), John Monino (MTRCC Secretary and Milton Township Trustee), Gary Muehlfelt (Milton Township Highway Commissioner), Barb Murphy (DuPage County Republican Party Chairwoman), Yadav Nathwani (MTRCC Treasurer and Milton Township Trustee), Nicole Prater (Winfield Township Republican Central Committee Chairman), Mary Rash, Pat Ryan, Janet Shaw, B.J. Slinger, Chuck Smith, and Tim Whelan (DuPage County Forest Preserve Commissioner). I have been a MTRCC member since 1999, and since then, I have had the best MTRCC meeting and MTRCC fundraiser attendance record. In 2002, I got MTRCC to begin holding its monthly meetings at the Wheaton Bowl, and MTRCC has met there ever since. In 2000, under MTRCC Chairman Randy Hultgren, I published MTRCC’s first website and I served as MTRCC’s webmaster 2000-2004 and 2008-2010. Both Hultgren and Roskam endorsed me when I first ran for Precinct Committeeman in 2000. Since 2000, I have included reports on MTRCC meetings and fundraisers in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-peter-roskam-sean-casten-illinois-6th-20181011-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam rallied die-hard Republicans in a private room at the Wheaton Bowl’s banquet hall on Wednesday, Ed Raab was outside keeping watch over the check-in counter, the clatter of pins echoing across the lanes. “If I wasn’t working,” Raab said, “I’d be right in there with them.” Roskam shook a few hands, and chatted with campaign volunteers, local precinct committeemen and DuPage County candidates before he strode to the podium for a short speech. “I’m incredibly energized by this campaign,” Roskam said. “I’m incredibly heartened by all of your support. … Now is the time for us to press forward.” Behind him, next to stacks of yard signs, was a lifesize cardboard cutout of President Donald Trump flashing a thumbs-up. Someone had placed a red “Make America Great Again” cap atop the cardboard Trump’s head. . .To win, Roskam likely needs to strike a balance between keeping Trump supporters on board, but also preventing independent and centrist Republican voters from abandoning him even if they don’t like the president. “The people in this district, I don’t think they’d do that,” said Raab, who credited the biggest take-home pay he’s ever had in 42 years working at the bowling alley to the Republican tax overhaul Roskam championed. “I think they’re pretty true to the people they’re backing.” . . . “The reason the national Democratic Party believes that Congressman Roskam’s district is in play is solely based on President Trump,” said Kirk Dillard, a former DuPage County Republican chairman, state senator and Illinois governor candidate. Casten has tried to get into a position to capitalize, calling Trump the “worst president of our generation.” He raised twice as much money as Roskam last quarter, his $2.6 million buttressed by millions of dollars in advertising from a group backed by House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. The latest spots hit Roskam over taxes and health care, saying it’s time he “checked out of Congress.” . . . “Peter wins close races because he is an exceptionally hard-working candidate, incredibly articulate speaker and has a volunteer base of dedicated individuals second to none,” Dillard said. Since that election 12 years ago, Democrats have made inroads in Roskam’s home base of DuPage County. President Barack Obama won the county twice, and the prosperous patchwork of suburbs recently has sent two Democratic state lawmakers to Springfield. Babette Holder, a Republican committeewoman in Wheaton, said the Trump factor matters “a lot” in this race. “I’ve never seen a midterm like this before,” Holder said. “I think it’ll be a big challenge this time.” But her hope is that when voters examine the issues, they’ll turn to Roskam, who she said breaks from the party and the president when necessary. “I am worried,” Holder said, “I’m not going to lie to you and say I’m not worried. It’ll come down to turnout.” . . . At the bowling alley on Wednesday, Raab said Roskam isn’t perfect, but he’s still preferable to the alternative. “He’s done some things I don’t agree with, but I like him a lot better than his opponent,” Raab said.)

Because I would not have been able to get a student loan, I did not even try. When was in high school, I was not viewed as being “college material.” Neither of my parents had attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I spent my junior and senior years and the summer in between washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. I just barely made into the upper 20% of my class. My ACT score was only 24. I was 1-A for draft notwithstanding the fact that my eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20, I had partial red/green color blindness, and I had Osgood-Schlatter disease (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood%E2%80%93Schlatter_disease).)

— Coming Soon to Facebook: Lots of Extreme Political Ads Campaign strategists say the social-media giant’s advertising platform rewards extreme messaging – Georgia Wells and Deepa Seetharaman (DIERSEN: Of course, you never have, and you never will see any kind of paid advertising in GOPUSA emails or on www.gopillinois.com. But if I did take money for such advertising, which activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. would take out ads in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails and on www.gopillinois.com? What would they would they promote with their advertising?)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/coming-soon-to-facebook-lots-of-extreme-political-ads-1535707802
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Campaign strategists are gearing up to flood Facebook with inflammatory and polarizing ads heading into the midterm elections, saying its advertising platform rewards extreme messaging more than other venues. Such tactics often backfire, partly because extreme ads can be hidden by those who find them disagreeable, Facebook Inc. said. The disconnect highlights the social network’s often-controversial role as a political tool, where Facebook wants to be viewed as a promoter of healthy debate while some believe its platform contributes to divisive civic discourse. Although Facebook didn’t start the trend toward more inflammatory political ads, many candidates and consultants working on midterm campaigns said its cost structure and ability to target narrow slices of voters makes it a uniquely effective tool for motivating people to act in support of a cause or a candidate. “You’re not trying to persuade anybody on Facebook,” said Jeff Roe, whose political-consulting firm Axiom Strategies is one of the biggest buyers of political advertising, largely on behalf of Republican candidates. “You’re trying to reach a different part of people’s brains.”)

However, that was a pretext. In 1989, they pulled out all the stops to get rid of me. They threw me off audits of IRS which were always in-town, assigned me to a nasty 6-month out-of-town audit, gave me unfair performance expectations, and gave me an unfair performance appraisal. The real reason why they did the aforesaid was that in 1988, I had become an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged them with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation. Because of the aforesaid, in 1989, I asked Henry Hyde to come to my defense.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ageism is widespread and is termed “an insidious practice which has harmful effects on the health of older adults,” by the World Health Organization. Political commentator Bill Maher famously called it the “last acceptable prejudice in America.” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg once publicly noted: “Young people are just smarter.” With 10,000 Baby Boomers reaching 65 every day — a trend which began in 2011 and is set to continue until 2029 — it is past the time to have a conversation around attitudes toward retirement. After all, since the time Social Security set the retirement eligibility age at 65 in 1936, life expectancy at birth has gone up by 20 years. . .Age discrimination occurs when an employer treats an applicant or employee less favorably because of his or her age, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. . .Ageism is hard to prove Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, which protects individuals who are over the age of 40 from discrimination in employment. Half a century later, age discrimination in the workplace remains notoriously hard to prove. Of the 18,376 cases filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2017, only 2.2 percent were found to have a “reasonable cause.” . . . 5 Signs of Age Discrimination (Source: AARP) According to the AARP, there are signs older workers can watch out for: Older workers are being fired or offered buyouts, and younger ones are being hired. http://www.chicagomag.com/city-life/August-2018/Why-Its-So-Hard-for-Republicans-to-Win-in-Illinois/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s possible to trace the divergent fortunes of the Republican and Democratic parties in Illinois by looking at the voting histories of two counties: DuPage, in the suburbs of Chicago, and Williamson, in Southern Illinois coal country. DuPage was once a bulwark of the Illinois Republican Party, having supported its presidential candidates since the days of Abraham Lincoln. After World War II, DuPage’s villages burgeoned with middle-class homeowners who had fled Chicago’s corrupt political machine, and considered Republicans the party of good government and fiscal responsibility. . .How times have changed. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won Illinois by an even larger margin than her husband, but she won only 12 counties, most of them in the Chicago area. She won DuPage County 53%-38%, and lost Williamson County 67%-28%.)

http://www.pravdareport.com/news/russia/kremlin/29-08-2018/141468-putin_pension-0/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that one should introduce administrative and even criminal responsibility in Russia for dismissing employees of pre-retirement age. “I deem it necessary to introduce administrative and even criminal responsibility for employers for dismissing workers of pre-retirement age, as well as for refusing to hire citizens for work because of their age,” Putin said in a televised address to the nation in connection with the widely discussed pension reform in Russia. One should envisage such responsibility within in the framework of additional guarantees that will protect interests of older citizens on the labor market. Today, the retirement age in Russia is 60 years for men and 55 years for women. This retirement age was introduced during the 1930s. The need to raise the retirement age in Russia has been discussed for a long time already due to the increased life expectancy and the inability to provide a decent pension while the number of employed individuals in the country is decreasing, and the number of pensioners is growing. In most countries of the world, the retirement age is 60-65 years.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Why we published an all-woman Tech 50 list – Editorial (DIERSEN: When will Crain’s publish all-woman and all-minority federal government 50 lists? Since the 1960s, the federal government’s top priority has been a) to hire, retain, and promote young Democrat women and young Democrat minorities and b) to make way for them by wasting the careers of and by getting rid of its employees who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran who did not make GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180720/ISSUE07/180719833
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Our 2011 Small Business Week coverage featured the Tech 25, a list of the people propelling the growth of technology entrepreneurship in Chicago. Howard Tullman was there, as CEO of his Flashpoint Media Arts Academy, since this was before he would go on to help create the 1871 Chicago startup hub. So were Sam Yagan, then co-founder of OKCupid, as well as Obama for America veteran Harper Reed and Lightbank partner Paul Lee, to name a few. We’ve since expanded the feature to an annual list of the 50 tech people you need to know now, and we’ve embraced founders of large companies as well as small ones while sprinkling in more financiers, heavyweights, connectors, dreamers, gurus and coders. Over the years, Crain’s technology reporter John Pletz, thanks to his deep and wide knowledge of the sector, has done an incredible job of producing each year’s list, keeping it fresh with new, diverse names while burnishing readers’ understanding of the perennial power players who have remained relevant year in, year out. This year, however, the editors threw John a curveball. With our ongoing Woman Up Project in mind, we asked him to create an all-female Tech 50 for 2018.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— This one is a doozy, even by Chicago standards: Millionaire Chicago mayoral candidate Willie Wilson handed out $300,000 in cash to attendees at a South Side church Sunday. And it gets better: According to Wilson, $100,000 of it came from Gov. Bruce Rauner. – Shia Kapos

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Check this out if you wonder why Illinois politicians are often a national joke. How can Willie Wilson, a candidate for Mayor of Chicago, literally hand out CASH at a public event? This is so wrong!” tweeted, Republican state Rep. David McSweeney.)
— Seating squabble: Thursday’s Lincoln Forum debate between Republican Rep. Peter Roskam and Democratic challenger Sean Casten is sold out. The event was only supposed to have 100 audience guests, ideally supporters evenly split between the two candidates. But when tickets went on sale, Casten’s supporters gobbled them up. Lincoln Forum co-founders Pat Brady, the former state GOP chairman, and Eric Adelstein, a Dem strategist, decided out of fairness to sell an additional 70 tickets to Roskam supporters. “The Lincoln Forum is nonpartisan and we have a duty to have a balanced room,” Brady said. – Shia Kapos (DIERSEN: I should write a book about the two times that Pat Brady spoke at TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois meetings.)

UNION LEADER
— Unions support workers – RICHARD BACKUS, New Boston (DIERSEN: IRS’s and GAO’s 40-hour work week and annual leave policies helped me to a) earn an MBA from Loyola in 1976, b) pass the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, c) earn a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, d) pass the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, and e) earn a master’s degree in financial markets and trading in 1997.)
http://www.unionleader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20180718/OPINION04/180719439
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Right-to-work is not what it seems. Before labor unions, factory workers toiled six days a week, 12 hours a day. They often worked alongside children as young as 5 years old. Pay was terrible; there were no health benefits or pensions. It was the unions that gave us the 5-day, 40-hour work week, pensions, and other benefits. It was the unions that gave us the shared prosperity of the 1940s and ‘50s. Since then the unions have been under attack, to the point where we have the unconscionable situation of full-time workers at Walmart needing to go on welfare. Gov. Chris Sununu is a champion of “right-to-work” legislation. And now, in Janus vs. AFCSME, the Supreme Court (with Neil Gorsuch on the bench) has said it’s okay for employees not to contribute union dues. The phrase “right-to-work” sounds innocent enough, but make no mistake, it intends to weaken unions and increase corporate profits. We now have the most unequal society since the Gilded Age of the 1890s. And Republicans, the party of the 1 percent, as the recent tax bill demonstrated, have already signaled they are coming after Medicare and Social Security. If you care about fairness, equity, and a society that works for everyone, vote accordingly in November.)

FEDERAL TIMES
— Democrats demand investigation into reports of politically motivated VA firings – Leo Shane III (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes stress that except for Henry Hyde in 1989, my Republican U.S. Senators and my Republican U.S. Representatives did not come to my defense when a) my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)
