September 29 Morning Edition

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Who will the anti-Kavanaughs focus on destroying in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, and in Illinois? Of course, the more demographics that you share with Kavanaugh, the more that they will do to destroy you. How many demographics do you share with Kavanaugh? Both Kavanaugh and I are Trump supporters, Christian, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, married, non-poor, and non-veteran. I assume that he is a gun owner and that his ancestors have been in America for a long time. However, I am not an attorney, let alone a judge. I was baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran. All my ancestors came from what is now Germany. My wife and I are childless. None of my degrees are from Ivy League universities. None of my ancestors attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I graduated from a public co-ed high school. My participation in sports was all but ended by a bone disease. I did not display any kind of leadership potential in high school or college. My college majors were management, business, accounting, and finance. I never made any academic honor roles. I was never a member of a fraternity. While Kavanaugh lived in a “dilapidated group house” when he attended law school, I stayed at University Plaza Dormitory and Lincolnshire West Apartments while I attended NIU. While Democrats forced me into early retirement in 1997 when I was 49 years old, Republicans nominated Kavanaugh for the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018 when he was 53 years old. While I am a Republican Precinct Committeeman, Kavanaugh is not. While am a State Editor for www.GOPUSA.com, Kavanaugh is not. While Kavanaugh “serves as a lector at his Washington, D.C. church, the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament. He has helped serve meals to the homeless as part of church programs, and has tutored at the Washington Jesuit Academy, a Catholic private school in the District of Columbia,”  I am not a member of a church, I do not attend church services, and I do not give money to a church. While “Kavanaugh’s reported salary as a federal judge is $220,600 and $27,000 as a lecturer at Harvard Law School, my Civil Service Retirement System pension is only $51,864 and my Social Security is only $2,064. – Dave Diersen

(FROM THE ARTICLE: If signed into law, it would also make the $10,000 limit on state and local tax deductions permanent. That’s been a thorn in the side of high tax states like Illinois, but Tax Foundation analyst Nicole Kaeding says that tax reform as a whole is keeping more money in Illinois taxpayers’ pockets. “Every individual in every congressional district across the country is seeing a net tax cut this year, even with the SALT cap,” she said. Others with the Tax Foundation have called the SALT deduction poor fiscal policy that subsidizes high-earners in high-tax states.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Race moves from Likely Republican to Lean Republican IL-06: Will GOP Rep. Peter Roskam, first elected amid the Democratic wave of 2006, be able to withstand the political currents of 2018? This suburban Chicago seat where a majority of residents hold a college degree is exactly the kind of district Democrats are eyeing to lift the party back to the majority in the House. Trump only received 42% of the vote here in 2016, losing the district by seven points to Clinton. That was a swing from 2012, when Romney carried the district 53% to 45%. A recent NYT/Siena poll found 57% of voters in the district disapprove of the job Trump is doing as president. That survey also found Roskam and his Democratic challenger, Sean Casten, locked in a close race at 45% to 44%. Casten, a scientist and clean energy businessman, has drawn scrutiny for some controversial statements, including comparing the President to Osama bin Laden. He later said he regretted his comments. Casten has also sought to put Roskam on defense for not being a check on the President and for supporting Trump’s agenda, especially the GOP tax plan, which the Democrat says could hurt taxpayers in the district because of the cap on state and local deductions.)

Needless-to-say, if you are a Republican who delivers Republican literature door-to-door, you should assume that Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, RINOs, and other anti-Trumps are watching you very closely, if not recording every move that you make and recording every word that you say. In my precinct, the anti-Trumps (of whom I estimate about 30 are registered Republican voters) watch me very closely when I deliver Republican literature door-to-door and they do everything that they can to discourage me from delivering that literature. Their tactics include closing their garage doors as I approach their homes. One registered Republican voter in my precinct angrily phoned me and demanded that I immediately come back to her home and take back the Republican literature that I had just left on her door. That literature was addressed to both her and to her registered Republican husband.)

She worked for the U.S. League of Savings Institutions (https://www.investopedia.com/terms/u/u-s-league-of-savings-institutions.asp) which had quarterly meetings at luxury destinations across America which she attended as its Corporate Secretary. I routinely accompanied her on those trips. Often, after the meetings were over, we visited nearby national parks. Further, I went on vacations with a coworker to Hawaii, Mexico, Bahamas, and Jamaica while I worked for IRS 1973-1976. Needless-to-say, my envy-filled IRS and GAO Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were beyond furious. Overwhelmingly, their spouses had little or no income.)

— Keep an old car running and you’ll save a fortune – Peter Dunn (DIERSEN: My not driving my 1972 Corvette has cost me a fortune. D&M Corvette in Downers Grove has appraised my 1972 Corvette at $41,500. But that was after I recently invested $6,702 in the car – $5,228 to D&M ($3,466 labor and $1,762 parts) and $1,474 to Coker Tire for 5 Firestone Wide Oval radial tires. I had not started the car for almost 9 years. Most of D&M’s bill was for repairing major damage that ethanol had done to car’s entire fuel system. The master cylinder and four calipers were replaced, A/C was charged, carburetor was rebuilt and fuel pump replaced, minor electrical and mechanical problems were fixed, five new tires were installed, new battery was installed, etc. I could have avoided much if not all of the fuel system and brake problems if I had driven the car more – at least once each summer. But my excuse for not starting the car since 2009 is that since 2004, I have spent 10+ hours each and every day putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out.)

In the suburbs, people paid more than $4.2 billion more in taxes than they got back. And downstate? They paid about $8 billion in taxes and got $12 billion worth of spending. The paper further separated areas of downstate and determined the central part of the region got back nearly twice as much as it paid in.)

They see that my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968. They see that I am no longer a TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, and American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member. Of course, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would shout at McCain that I got four student deferments 1966-1970 and a financial hardship draft deferment 1970-1971. They would shout at McCain that I was able to get those deferments because my parents and I were undeservedly filthy rich. But worse than that, they would shout at McCain that I was a political hypocrite and a coward.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Their increasingly combative relationship has served as a metaphor of sorts for the Republican Party: the former Vietnam POW and “proud conservative” who fell short to Barack Obama in his run for president in 2008 versus the loud draft avoider who rapidly seized control of the GOP and White House eight years later. . .Not long afterward, McCain appeared to take a shot at Trump for avoiding the draft during the Vietnam War. “One aspect of the [Vietnam] conflict by the way that I will never ever countenance is that we drafted the lowest income level of America, and the highest income level found a doctor that would say that they had a bone spur,” McCain said during an interview with CSPAN. McCain did not mention Trump by name, but his meaning appeared clear. Trump received five wartime deferments, including one in which a doctor diagnosed him with bone spurs.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The number of overdose victims linked to a suspected bad batch of synthetic marijuana has risen to 76 in New Haven, Connecticut, as officials try to determine exactly what sickened people. People on and around the historic New Haven Green near Yale University began falling ill shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, and the overdoses continued into Thursday morning. No deaths were reported, and most people brought to hospitals have been discharged, officials said. Symptoms varied. Many victims lost consciousness, officials said. Others vomited. Some just became nauseous or lethargic. City officials said police officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel will staff a command post on the Green for the time being, and social workers and private health outreach workers will be on hand. Toxicology testing remained incomplete Thursday. Some victims tested positive for the powerful opioid fentanyl, but it appeared most if not all the overdoses were caused only by a potent batch of “K2” synthetic marijuana, said Dr. Kathryn Hawk, an emergency medicine physician and professor at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where many of the victims were treated.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Working on the Luxury Sales team has been amazing, but I think that out of all the projects I’ve done this summer my most fulfilling project has been my Maker Week project. I worked on a Diversity & Inclusion project with interns from a variety of departments to create an employee resource site. The idea came from the fact that many people were unaware of diversity initiatives throughout the company so we thought that creating a database and website to record the diversity initiatives would be a great internal resource and create visibility for the programs. First, we gathered all the information about the diversity initiatives to create the database. Second, we interviewed different people in the company like A.G. Sulzberger, Dean Baquet, Meredith Kopit Levien and other employees involved in diversity initiatives. Lastly, we formatted the website to hold the database, show diversity efforts in recruiting, the newsroom and the business side. We also added a tab for various conferences based on departments. Our showcase at Maker Week was great because employees seemed really interested in the accessibility of the website. It was one of the best projects I’ve worked on and I’m so glad to have been a part of it. I think this project really taught me to be bold in my work. I spoke to all these amazing people by just emailing them and taking a chance and it worked out which was amazing. I’ve also been a diversity advocate throughout my years in school and this project showed me how an idea from one of my passions can become a useful reality. In the fall, I’ll be heading back to Syracuse University to be a Resident Advisor for my last year. I’ll also be a peer facilitator for our first diversity-oriented freshman forum. I want to use the skills I’ve learned in this internship to create something amazing on my campus that is fueled by my passion just like I got to create at The New York Times.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Despite 2 voter rejections, Wheaton-Warrenville Community Unit School District 200 plans to construct new building — and gets sued over it – Bob Goldsborough (DIERSEN: What are your connections with this issue? My wife and I have paid real estate taxes big time to District 200 since 1978. We have never attended any District 200 school and we have never sent any child to any District 200 school. The District 200 headquarters is in my precinct as well as Whittier Grade School and Edison Middle School. Janet Shaw is a fellow Milton Township Republican Precinct Committeeman. I know Dan Wagner and his wife. I understand that the lawsuit has been assigned to Judge Bonnie Wheaton.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/ct-met-wheaton-school-preschool-project-20180806-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Twice since 2013, voters in the Wheaton and Warrenville area have rejected referendum proposals to raise taxes for the construction of a new preschool. Despite that, the Community Unit School District 200 board is proceeding with building a new Jefferson Early Childhood Center without voter approval through a different form of financing. But now a resident who opposes that measure has sued the district in DuPage County Circuit Court, seeking to halt the plans. Those in favor of building a new childhood center call the current 26,500-square-foot building outdated and note that the district in recent years has renovated or built anew every other school building except Jefferson. Jefferson, which was constructed in 1958 and had 277 pupils as of June, offers a traditional preschool and early childhood intervention for youths with mental or physical disabilities. Voters rejected a referendum proposal for a new Jefferson school in 2013, and again said no in 2017 as part of a much larger, $132 million proposal involving other district schools as well. Board President Jim Vroman said that after the 2017 referendum proposal failed, the district surveyed voters and found that “a substantial majority” supported building a new Jefferson. “That told us that voters were against the tax increase that the referendum would have generated if we had proceeded,” he said. Instead, the board agreed with a suggestion by a district financial adviser to use lease certificates, or secured lease credit financing, to fund a new Jefferson. District 200 would oversee construction of the estimated $15.5 million, 41,544-square-foot building, while Zions Bank would own the building. . .Frequent board critic Janet Shaw, who runs a blog that scrutinizes the district’s finances, long has questioned the legality of using lease certificates and added that “my real problem is that we don’t need (the new school building).” Shaw has filed suit against District 200, demanding a halt to the current plan to finance a new Jefferson. She is seeking a judge to require District 200’s board to submit a proposal for the new school building to the public via a referendum question. “District 200 is tampering with election results right here in DuPage County,” Shaw said. “The district thinks that by using the magic word ‘lease,’ its two failed referendum efforts and the will of the community are somehow erased and it can proceed in an identical manner as if a referendum had been adopted by the community to build and finance a new school.” A district spokesperson declined to comment on the lawsuit. Dan Wagner, a parent and longtime proponent of a new Jefferson, called the existing building outmoded, with some instruction occurring in converted broom closets. He added that the building lacks air conditioning, which precludes some special needs pupils from participating in gym classes.)

https://chicagocitywire.com/stories/511525061-republican-party-welcomes-union-members-into-leadership-ranks
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Northwest Side (NWS) GOP Club, which touts itself as union-friendly, has added another leader with union ties to its ranks. The club recently announced Erin Jones was appointed precinct committeeman for Chicago’s 39th Ward. “Erin is a rock-star and a loyal member of the NWS GOP Club.” club officials said. “As a first-responder family, Erin and her husband serve the community both on and off-duty. We are happy to have her in a leadership role.” As a committeeman, Jones will represent the GOP voters of the precinct at the county level. “I grew up in Rogers Park and moved to the Northwest Side nine years ago,” Jones said. “I’ve been a Chicago police officer for the last 15 years, spending 10 of those years in patrol on the Westside of the City. I actually started working for the city when I was a teenager as a lifeguard in Rogers Park.” Jones is married to a Chicago firefighter and has two daughters. She was appointed by Matt Podgorski, NWS GOP Club chairman and 39th ward committeeman. The NWS GOP Club also has a party planned for Aug. 11 to welcome its card-carrying union members and encourage other union members to explore the club. Republican candidate and Chicago police sergeant Ammie Kessem is slated to attend the event. Kessem is challenging incumbent Rep. Robert Martwick (D-Chicago) for Illinois’ 19th House District seat in November’s general election.)

The federal government wastes the careers of and gets rid of its employees who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran who the federal government does not promote to GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40.)
https://legalnewsline.com/stories/511525152-u-s-equal-employment-opportunity-commission-eeoc-sues-the-university-of-wisconsin-system-for-age-discrimination
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The University of Wisconsin System violated federal law when it refused to hire a former longtime employee because of her age, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit filed. According to the EEOC’s lawsuit, Bambi Butzlaff Voss, who was 53 years old and subject to a layoff from her job as a Marketing and Communications Specialist at the University of Wisconsin’s Waukesha campus, applied for six different positions with the University of Wisconsin System’s central office in Madison, including an Associate Marketing and Communications Specialist position. Butzlaff Voss had 25 years of experience performing tasks similar, if not identical, to the ones in the position she applied for. But, because of Butzlaff Voss’s age, the University refused to hire her. Instead, it hired a 23-year-old candidate with less than two years of experience. Such alleged conduct violates the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA). The EEOC sued in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin (EEOC v. Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System, Civil Action No: 3:18-cv-00602) after first trying to settle through its conciliation process. The lawsuit asks the court to order the University to hire Butzlaff Voss and provide back pay as well as pay liquidated damages. The lawsuit also seeks a permanent injunction prohibiting the University from discriminating against future candidates based on their age. “The Age Discrimination in Employment Act has been on the books for five decades,” said Gregory Gochanour, regional attorney for the EEOC’s Chicago District. “The EEOC will make sure employers follow the law, even if it means going to court to get the message across.” Julianne Bowman, district director of the EEOC’s Chicago District, said, “Workers over 40 years of age should have the same opportunities as those workers less than half their age. Ignoring a candidate’s decades of experience relevant to the available job, because of her age, to hire someone with less than two years of experience is illegal discrimination.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The House Republican Organization, the campaign arm of the House GOP in Springfield, reported Monday receiving a $2 million check from the governor. Some Republicans and their allies had been questioning Rauner’s intention to fund campaign operations for the fall while he focuses on his own re-election bid. Republicans have come to count on cash from the wealthy governor, an equity investor, and he has largely subsidized the state GOP. Pritzker, the wealthy Democratic challenger, is using his money to also help bankroll Democratic candidates and campaign committees to respond to Rauner’s past funding practices.)

— ‘THE NEW GILDED AGE’ ILLINOIS INCOME INEQUALITY TOPS NATIONAL AVERAGE – Ted Cox (DIERSEN: From what I see, there is an above average disparity in income and in housing values in my precinct.)
https://www.oneillinois.com/stories/2018/7/23/the-new-gilded-age
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois was one of eight states to top that disparity, but it was closest to the national average. In Illinois, the average income for the top 1 percent was $1.4 million, 27 times greater than the average salary for the other 99 percent: $52,000. It took income of $421,000 to make the top 1 percent nationally, $456,000 in Illinois. Lake County was among the top counties in the nation for what it takes to make the top 1 percent of residents, with a threshold of $994,000, 18th in the United States. The average income for the top 1 percent there was $3.1 million, 37.4 times greater than the average salary for the other 99 percent of $83,000. Even among the very rich, Illinois held its own. The study found that, of all income going to the top 1 percent nationally, half that figure was accrued by families in five states: California, New York, Texas, Florida, and Illinois. Frank Manzo IV, of the Illinois Economic Policy Institute, which is not affiliated with the national organization, said the data match his for Illinois. According to Manzo, 57,421 Illinois tax filers topped $500,000 in income in 2015, slightly more than 1 percent of the 5,667,344 total. With an average income of $1.56 million, they claimed 21.7 percent of all adjusted gross income statewide.)

— Rauner stirs controversy with conservative base over same-sex wedding – Craig Wall (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, it looks like Rauner’s main strategy to get reelected is to dump individuals, dump organizations, dump companies, and dump governments that support the traditional family, right to life, and/or immigration planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform.)
http://abc7chicago.com/politics/rauner-stirs-controversy-with-conservative-base-over-same-sex-wedding/3753981/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The wedding picture, posted on Instagram, was considered a slap in the face by many social conservatives and Evangelical Christians. Many Republicans had already felt betrayed when Rauner signed HB40 to provide taxpayer funded abortions after promising he would not. “What I’m hearing through our connections and our networks throughout, people are once again saying there he goes again poking social conservatives in the eye,” said Executive Director of the Illinois Family Institute David Smith. Rauner has been very supportive of LGBTQ rights as governor, most recently by participating in Pride parades in Aurora and Chicago. Many Republicans said officiating a same-sex marriage should be a non-issue for voters. “We should put aside some of our differences, because there’s so much more that we agree on, the governor, myself and also conservatives and independents throughout the state of Illinois,” said Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin. “Well, I would hope that voters would appreciate that Bruce is very much in favor of equality of all people,” Cozzi said. Cozzi added if the picture helps voters appreciate Rauner for his stance on equality, that’s a good thing. But for Rauner, rallying conservatives just may not be in the cards. “I don’t think there’s much he can do to win us back, to win many social conservatives back,” Smith said. The governor’s office said the wedding was a personal event, and Rauner’s campaign spokesman wondered why anyone would make a big deal of it. CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Rauner officiates gay wedding, social conservatives object – Morgan Greene
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-rauner-gay-wedding-20180712-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Some socially conservative groups were not cheering Rauner’s role in the wedding. “This is just reminding people that he does have a social agenda, and it’s not conservative, it’s not Republican, and it’s certainly not pro-life,” said Illinois Family Institute executive director David E. Smith. “This is just another reminder of how much damage he has done to the Republican brand and its policy goals.” A Rauner spokesman did not immediately return a request for comment. The governor has largely tried to stay out of the fray of LGBTQ issues, but days before he officiated the wedding, Rauner marched in the Aurora Pride parade. Rauner has regularly drawn criticism from conservatives for supporting other progressive causes. Last year, he signed a controversial bill into law that expanded taxpayer-subsidized abortions. He won the March primary against conservative state Rep. Jeanne Ives by just 3 points.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180712/BLOGS02/180719931/rauner-edges-a-little-closer-to-trump-camp
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So is the GOP guv trying to send a message to conservative voters who are still miffed at his decision to sign abortion and immigration bills unpopular with some conservatives? . . . Either way, Democratic nominee J.B. Pritzker’s campaign is seizing on the Pence visit, which comes amid increasing nervousness amid big exporters and agricultural producers about looming trade wars with China, Europe and Canada. “Pence is a right-wing extremist—signing the harshest abortion laws in the country, opposing marriage equality and transgender rights, supporting shifting HIV/AIDS funds to pay for conversion therapy, and opposing Syrian refugees,” Pritzker’s campaign said in a statement. “If Mike Pence is turning to Bruce Rauner for lessons in damage control, the GOP must have given up all hope in Illinois.”)

— Conservatives blast Rauner for officiating at gay wedding – John Dempsey
http://www.wlsam.com/2018/07/12/conservatives-blast-rauner-for-officiating-at-gay-wedding/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The head of the conservative Illinois Family Institute is blasting Rauner. The group’s executive director David E. Smith tweeted “Keep poking social conservatives in the eye Bruce. You are doing a yeoman’s job of alienating the base.” Rauner angered conservatives by signing a bill to expand taxpayer funded abortions in Illinois, prompting a primary challenge from conservative State Representative Jeanne Ives. Rauner won that race by just three percentage points.)
