When Money Magazine published its 4-page article on me in its February, 1978 issue, it because clear that the Democrats at Money Magazine selected me for the article because they wanted to and because they did a) foist negative government employee stereotypes on me and b) paint my education deductions as being improper.  They described my job duties as an IRS Revenue Officer and the graduate business courses at Loyola and the graduate accounting courses at DePaul that I had deducted purposely to make it look like the courses did not relate to my job duties and they did not help me carry out my job duties. They implied that the courses qualified me for “a new trade or business” and that I took the courses to get a job in the private sector.  The Democrats at IRS disallowed all the courses notwithstanding the fact that IRS encourages its Revenue Offices to take graduate business and accounting courses and my Loyola and DePaul graduate school applications clearly showed that I wanted to take the courses to help me carry out my job duties at IRS.  I took IRS to Tax Court pro se and won a split decision.  The Democrats at Money Magazine and the Democrats at IRS would not have done the aforesaid to me if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, and/or a veteran.)

Factors for 915 Cove Court in Wheaton include the subdivision being built in a watershed area and a former septic field, the tremendous amount of surface and subsurface storm water that flows onto the lot during and after heavy rains, the inadequate number of storm sewer inlets in the subdivision, the disruption, obstruction, and improper connection of 6″ and 4″ subterranean drainage lines when the home was built, the pouring the foundation walls on cracked footings, the improper installation and intentional blockage of exterior foundation footing tiles, the installation of only one sump pump when there should have been two or even three or even four, the many long and wide cracks in the basement floor, and the fact that all the storm water that gets into the storm sewer system on the lot is limited to the capacity of just one 4″ pipe.  What factors decrease the likelihood of your basement flooding?  For 915 Cove Court, they include the installation of steel reinforcement rods in foundation walls, the installation of interior footing tiles, my paying $900 when the home was built in 1984 to have all nine of the home’s downspouts directly connected to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my installing a backup sump pump, my unobstructed and properly connecting the aforesaid subterranean drainage lines to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my paying for unobstruction (the removal of stones) from some of the exterior footing tiles, my adding hundreds of feet of French drains and many storm sewer inlets on the lot and connecting them directly to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my properly sealing the many long and wide cracks in the basement floor, my paying for conversion to an overhead sewer system before the basement was finished in 2005, and my paying for a 20-W whole house natural gas backup electric generator for the home.  Since 1984, because of Wheaton’s failure/refusal to assure that building codes were enforced when the subdivision was constructed and 915 Cove Court was built, I have been forced to spend many thousands of dollars and many hundreds of hours of my labor to stop basement flooding.)

I’m also something of a political operative, though Mr. Miner over at the Reader imagines I’d prefer a loftier description.” There’s a far more serious motive behind the name calling, Proft’s Illinois Rising co-host, Pat Hughes, said during the same broadcast. “Look at the irony,” Hughes said. “Eric Zorn is commenting on your newspaper from a newspaper. He’s making political commentary. And the fact that there’s other opinion leaders out there that can get out to readers in a way that’s more efficient, in a way that they’re interested in consuming the news, is a threat not just to their model economically but to the monopoly that they feel they have on thought. And from Zorn’s perspective — and I suspect Miner’s perspective — from left-leaning, liberal orthodoxy.” Proft, co-founder with Hughes of the Illinois Opportunity Project, is Liberty Principles PAC chairperson and treasurer, as well as a senior fellow at the Chicago-based conservative think tank Illinois Policy Institute. Illinois Rising is a presentation of the Illinois Policy Institute. Proft is a principal of Local Government Information Services, which owns this publication. Proft and Hughes were responding to a March 23 op-ed article in the Chicago Tribune in which Zorn referred to Proft’s Illinois news outlets as “mock journalism.” Zorn’s column was published a week before a similarly themed piece in the Chicago Reader by Michael Miner titled, “If your community news is slanted, Dan Proft may be to blame.” Zorn’s column wasn’t the first time the Tribune writer has targeted Proft. In July 2009, a few weeks after Proft announced his ultimately failed bid for the Republican nomination in the governor’s race, Zorn used his column to call Proft a “seethingly eloquent conservative attack dog.” The Tribune has allowed Proft space in its columns to voice his views as well. On July 11, 2016, it published Proft’s op-ed piece, “How to (really) achieve the ‘important conversation,’ ” about the sniper attack in Dallas a few days earlier that killed five police officers. Proft criticized the mainstream news media’s coverage of the incident, as well as other incidents in which police officers have been shot by black men, and urged less-biased, more-objective coverage. “There is plenty of intellectual room between ‘cops can do no wrong’ and ‘cops are all racists waging war against minorities,’ ” Proft wrote. “The reasoned room in between is occupied by most of the Americans who are not on television, radio or Twitter.” Proft cited the apparent hypocrisy of critics dismissing his news outlets as not being objective while their own work is published by companies with far less transparent political biases. “I’m transparent about my point of view,” Proft said. “That certainly informs the stories that we select to cover and the way that we cover them. And that’s the case for everybody in journalism. I hate to break it to those who think there’s this superhuman race of journalists who have no point of view. Every human being has a point of view, and it influences how they do their jobs. So, if we could just start from that agreed upon point, then maybe we could get somewhere.
